Review of Hunter 240

Hunter 240

Basic specs.

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

Floor plan

The interior is like most other boats made of teak. Teak has the advantage of being naturally very oily and therefore water-repellent, which is suitable on boats. The boat is equipped with 3 cabins, 5 berths, a galley, 25.0 liter fresh water capacity, toilet facility and 10.0 liter waste water capacity.

Rig

The boat equipped with a fractional rig. A fractional rig has smaller headsails which make tacking easier, which is an advantage for cruisers and racers, of course. The downside is that having the wind from behind often requires a genaker or a spinnaker for optimal speed.

DaggerBoard

The Hunter 240 is equipped with a daggerboard keel. A daggerboard is a lifting keel that can be lowered and raised, allowing the boat to enter shallow waters as well.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.46 - 0.56 meter (1.51 - 1.81 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

An outboard motor is often used on this boat. In that case Hunter 240 will typically require a power of 2 - 3 hp, alternatively 46 - 55 lbs thrust if you prefer an electrical motor. Electric outboards are becoming popular for sailboat owners who want clean instant power with less noise and no exhaust fumes.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Hunter 240 is 2.49, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.3 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Hunter 240 is about 113 kg/cm, alternatively 633 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 113 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 633 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 21m 2 (226 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Total weight (without water ballast): 2300lbs./1043kgs. Sailing weight: 3600lbs./1632kgs.

Motor decision for my Hunter 240

Dolphin55

My Mercury 9.9hp motor has been very unreliable and unpredictable. Works fine tested on land and it either will not start or dies easily on the water. Changed gas, air filter and spark plug but still the same frustrations. Need advice on four alteratives: 1. Replace the carb. Rebuilt on Amazon is $90. 2. An OEM carb is $650! 3. Buy at Mercury 5hp Sail Power for $1805 with a 20 inch shaft. The 25 inch shaft motors are out of stock with 15 week lead time. Does anyone know what length is best for the 240? 4. Buy a Tahatsu 6hp Sail Pro 25 inch shaft for $2000 but soonest delivery is in October! I am finding that lead time on new motors can be months. Thanks for your advice!

JoeWhite

Get 25" shaft, you will need it. I had mercury 9.9 on my H25.5 and started on fist pull every time. I would think an 8 HP should be OK as well.

twalker H260

Did you check fuel lines and quick connects? Small o rings on our quick connects seem to frequently develop cracks that then allow air to enter the system causing the engine to stall unless the primer bulb is constantly pumped.

Justin_NSA

The carb might get you thru the season while you wait for a new motor.

rgranger

I had a sailpro until it got stollen. It was absolutely dependable and did everything I needed it to do, I always disconnect the fuel line when I come into the dock and let the motor run dry.

waterman30

I've had good luck with OnlineOutboards

Crazy Dave Condon

Are you using old gas and/or ethanol fuel? Did you rebuild the carburetor essentially cleaning out the. Jets?

isaksp00

Don't know your motor, I have a Honda 8. Is it unreliable mainly at idle and low rpm, but once you rev it up it is ok? If so, check the low speed jet on the carb. It may be accessible without removing the whole carb, as mine is (it is on top of the carb and can be removed with screwdriver). Use something like a very thin plastic "wire" to clean the tiny center shaft, and spray carb cleaner through it. It just may idle and run at low speed smoothly after that.

Crazy Dave Condon said: Are you using old gas and/or ethanol fuel? Did you rebuild the carburetor essentially cleaning out the. Jets? Click to expand

I would run it dry by unhooking the fuel hose from the engine end after every use, at least if you are not going to use it for more than a few days.

Ethanol (corn syrup crap) will foul the jets. I use to carry 2+2 carb cleaner and sprayed the jets liberally and it worked. See if the higher octane gas is ethanol free as I buy mine that way for my yard equipment. Otherwise buy ethanol free gas.

oh, run the gas out after each use by allowing the motor to stop on it’s own

If you don't have a station nearby that offers ethanol free gas, apparently the gas sold for piston planes at local airports is ethanol free.

isaksp00 said: I would run it dry by unhooking the fuel hose from the engine end after every use, at least if you are not going to use it for more than a few days. Click to expand

One thing to mention. On the older engines, seals and gaskets can be damaged by ethanol gas

shanker

clean the carb. your issue sounds like plugged up jets. lots of videos on YouTube on how to do. easy to do and will save you $200.

Thaniel

After some research on why everyone recommends non-ethanol gas for outboards, I found in addition to possible seal or line erosion, gas that contains ethanol needs the air-fuel mixture to be a bit different. No biggie if there are mixture screws on your carb, just tune the carb with the ethanol gas. However if your carb doesn't have a low speed mixture screw (some don't) buying a new carb won't fix the issue and must use non-ethanol gas to get the mix right (or re-jet the carb). I have old motorcycles, mowers and tractors and I don't bother with finding non-ethanol gas for them. Once the lines and seals are replaced with suitable materials and the carb is tuned it's all good. My tractor (a 1949 ford) has been running on whatever the cheapest at the gas station for 26 years.

Remarks Very clean, no issues, ready to sail. This 1999 Hunter 240 Cruise Pac is the ultimate trailer sailor! Water ballast and swing keel make this boat stable enough for coastal trips, but maneuverable enough for all our inland lakes and sandbar trips! This Hunter 240 Sailboat draws about 18 inches with the keel up, making it easy to get into those tight access areas. Easy to launch and retrieve from the trailer, we have got the time from trailer to sailing under 10 minutes. The mast easy extremely easy to rig with a rig that was made specifically for this boat. COMES WITH TRAILER!!! No issues with the fiberglass anywhere. This is a VERY clean boat for the year and has seen only freshwater lakes. This is the Cruise Pac model that comes with roller furling, Bimini, stern rail seats, port a poty, and galley. NEW Mercury 9.9 Command Thrust ELECTRIC START outboard this year with alternator. New secondary battery and new charger installed this year for AC shore power plug in. This is a very powerful outboard and is an extra long shaft, giving you tons of control. Sleeps 4-5 people and has a port a pity under the V birth. This is a great overnight boat. The large cockpit is great for families and the swim scoop is something you don't normally see on a boat this size. The ONLY thing this boat could use in the future is some new sails as they are the originals. No leaks from the windows, very well taken care of, no soft spots. You'll be hard pressed to find a better 240. There is a Harken fuller that comes with this boat, its not currently installed. The jib can be used for either hank on or furler. Id be happy to show whoever buys this boat how to launch, retrieve, and sail. 24.08 ft Long 8 Ft beam 3600 LBS 1300 LBS Water Ballast (Easy to fill and drain) New this year: 9.9 HP Mercury Command Thrust with electric start and alternator Outboard Motor New 2nd battery New dual AC charger New battery selector New Jib Sheets New 2nd Mainsheet and tackle (I made a dedicated setup for rigging and de-rigging) Standard Equipment: Winches Rigging Sails Bimini Porta poty Anchor Sink in galley with holding tank for water All Interior cushions Trailer with extendable arm (Trailer has brakes but are not set up).
