Review of Johnson 23

Basic specs..

The boat is equipped with 4 berths.

The boat equipped with a fractional rig. A fractional rig has smaller headsails which make tacking easier, which is an advantage for cruisers and racers, of course. The downside is that having the wind from behind often requires a genaker or a spinnaker for optimal speed.

Unknown keel type

The keel is made of iron. Many people prefer lead keel in favour of iron. The main argument is that lead is much heavier than iron and a lead keel can therefore be made smaller which again result in less wet surface, i.e. less drag. In fact iron is quite heavy, just 30% less heavy than lead, so the advantage of a lead keel is often overstated.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.40 - 1.50 meter (4.59 - 4.89 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

An outboard motor is often used on this boat. In that case Johnson 23 will typically require a power of 2 - 3 hp, alternatively 48 - 58 lbs thrust if you prefer an electrical motor. Electric outboards are becoming popular for sailboat owners who want clean instant power with less noise and no exhaust fumes.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Johnson 23 is 2.44, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 5.9 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Johnson 23 is about 98 kg/cm, alternatively 553 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 98 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 553 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 17m 2 (182 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Chafe Protection for Dock Lines

  • Sailboat Reviews

Here's a skinny little pocket cruiser for two that's back in production after a three-year hiatus. She is quick on a reach but, predictably, not very adept at upwind sailing.

When she was introduced in 1983, the Rob Roy 23 captured all the popularity that Ron Johnson, her Florida builder, could handle. Marine Concepts, Johnson’s small custom shop, built and sold 85 in less than 10 years. The Rob Roy was then retired in favor of Johnson’s Sea Pearls (Sea Pearl 21, Sea Pearl Tri-21, and Sea Pearl 28.)

Rob Roy 23

Now the little cruiser is back, with the first new ones being launched in 1998, for “about what the last one we built cost—around $26,000 complete,” Johnson said when we talked to him in late 1997.

We wondered what sort of 23-footer could command that price. In 1983, it was the only trailerable canoe-stern yawl in town. Its appeal, however, goes beyond novelty. This is a boat with character: She looks salty; sails well with working sails alone; and she provides accommodations for two. Simplicity, from a space-saving centerboard to a “hardened” kick-up rudder, from an unstayed mizzen mast to a tabernacle-mounted mainmast, is a watchword. The Rob Roy can be launched at a ramp and is easily beached due to its 1′ 7″ draft with the board up. Owners have cruised her for weeks at a time and routinely cross the Gulf Stream and other formidable chunks of open water.

On the other hand, sitting headroom and moderate beam limit the space below, even for a pocket cruiser. There’s no shortage of boats in her size range with bigger cockpits. The canoe stern steals space, and an outboard well has its pros and cons.

To answer the question of her popularity, one must look deeper. As is our practice at Practica Sailor , we asked the owners about trailering ease, outfitting, durability and her woeful forays into PHRF racing.

As we learned, the Rob Roy not only created a minor buying frenzy when she appeared, it won a group of vocal and committed owners.

“This is THE boat,” said one owner. “I don’t want anything bigger and I can’t imagine anything better.”

Designed by Ted Brewer, the Rob Roy was inspired by the turn-of-the-century adventures of John MacGregor. His little 20-foot canoe yawl was so portable that he carted her aboard trains, yet she was tough enough to let him leave the protection of the River Humber and explore the British Isles from end to end. MacGregor not only named his freedom-giving yawl after his famous ancestor, he also inspired the Humber Yawl Society of which designer Ted Brewer is a member.

“I admire those boats and their voyages,” Brewer told us. “Lord Baden-Powell, who started the Boy Scouts, was president of the group early on. The Humber yawls were all canoe-sterned with plumb ends. They got bigger than the original Rob Roy, up to 24 or 26 feet. They had gaff or gunter rigs. My Rob Roy design owes a lot to their spirit but not a great deal to their specifics.”

Brewer’s career began in the late 1950’s. He’s worked on both the East Coast and West Coast (he now practices in Lyman, Washington), and his designs range from race boats such as Storm and American Eagle to cruising boats like the Panoceanic 46 and Quickstep 24.

“With the Rob Roy,” he said, “I was trying to keep the rig manageable and still have her sail well, to give her enough beam to stand on her feet but not so much that she’d be slow, to stretch out her design waterline, build in a lot of form stability, and still have her look handsome. Design is always a series of tradeoffs. In a boat of this size that’s especially true. The time that I spent in the navy sailing 26-foot open whale boats showed up in the design, too. Early in the design process I decided that I very much wanted one of these boats for myself. That tends to make you pay a particular kind of attention.”

What he came up with is hardly your average boat, but she is nevertheless a boat that addresses the needs of the average sailor. The 6′ 6″ cockpit seats are straight and comfortable enough to take a bit of the curse off having only two berths below, but the Rob Roy 23 is essentially geared to support two adults, and only two. That decision had its greatest impact on the interior arrangement, but other aspects of the design—like cockpit size, design displacement, and sail plan—reflect it, too.

One owner said, “I would have to rate the design as first rate, especially the double-ended look, the centerboard raising into the keel, the deep cockpit, the sail leads and hardware arrangements.”

Construction

The original Rob Roys were built of fiberglass with balsa coring in hull and deck. Johnson now builds his standard Sea Pearls and his new Rob Roy with foam cores. He says that the new foams have improved resistance to water migration and superior temperature and noise insulation.

“But,” he said, “we’re essentially a custom shop and the customer can get whatever type of core he wants.” One owner reported that the core beneath the mast step was squashed when he tightened his rig. “That sort of thing should never happen, but it did,” Johnson admitted. “We fixed it, but whether the core is foam or balsa a high-compression spot like that should always be solid glass, and in the Rob Roy, it is.” Despite that experience (or maybe because of Johnson’s handling of the problem), the owner in question rates the construction and finish of his Rob Roy as “excellent” and added, “I do not know of trailerable boat that I’d rather have.”

Rob Roy 23

“We use the best gelcoats,” Johnson said. “We’ve found antique colors that don’t absorb heat or radiate much glare. ‘White sails’ is our standard deck color or for an additional $280 you can have a two-tone deck where the non-skid portions are done in ‘Whalebone’.” Hull colors are a no-cost option. Behind the gelcoat comes a barrier coat of vinylester resin. We use Stitchmat (a fabric made by stitching layers of mat together on the bias) to prevent print through. The remaining hand-laid rovings that make up the laminate are wetted out with polyester resin. The Rob Roy has extra layers of rovings in the keel and trailer impact areas.”

There is a small interior glass unit, very similar to what, in larger form, might be called an interior pan. It forms part of the sole and locates the bulkheads and furniture. It’s not structural. The bulkheads and furniture are double-tabbed to the hull. The bulkheads and furniture are faced with teak. Trim is solid teak. The archway in the central bulkhead is ringed with teak and is supported by solid pieces of teak that reach to the keel.

“You couldn’t build boats like the Rob Roy anymore,” one owner said. “The wood and the finish below would make it too expensive.”

“Marine Concepts provides excellent quality in basic construction. No problems with blisters after 12 years,” reported another.

One construction feature, though, that has been changed with the new Rob Roy is the make-up of both the centerboard and the rudderblade. Said Johnson, “The old centerboard was an aluminum plate and the old rudder was a sandwich with an aluminum plate in the middle. Boats that were kept in the water experienced electrolytic activity. due to the stainless steel weldment at the bottom of the rudder shaft. Owners can and should protect those blades with zincs if they keep the boat at the dock or mooring instead of on a trailer.”

The original board was hung from a pivot pin assembly that fits in the forward end of the centerboard slot but remains external to the hull so it won’t cause leaks but will allow the board to be removed for repair or even cleaning. The original board was shaped like an “L” lying on its back. The foot (or short side) of the “L” is housed in an abbreviated trunk, but forward of the companionway the remainder (or long side) of the board is housed entirely below the sole. You control the board via a simple, one-part tackle from its uppermost after- corner. The configuration leaves the saloon free from an obtrusive trunk.

The kick-up rudder connects to an angled stainless shaft. The shaft works well without bearings and has proven to be durable. The point where the blade joins it, however, seems thin and vulnerable. The joint is (just) protected by the keel in front of it. Neither Johnson nor Brewer has heard of a rudder being damaged. It appears as though a grounding in reverse or even maximum rudder torque might change that box score, but then steering loads on a moderately rigged 23-footer aren’t that extreme.

The blades on the new boat are made of glass. The new board probably will have a foil-shape.

The hull/deck joint has changed. The first 85 boats were built with an inward-turned flange molded into the hull. Johnson has now gone to an outward-turned flange “because it’s easier to finish off and make leak-proof.” He will still use 3M 5200 and mechanical fasteners to make the joint and will still cover it with a solid caprail. “The Rob Roy record on deck leaks is excellent,” he said, and the owners surveyed agree.

One owner had a persistent problem with a companionway leak. “It appears, after much back and forth, that there was no bedding in the original joint,” Johnson told us. “We fixed the problem but it cost me time and money to get it sorted out.”

During Rob Roy’s life, her bowsprit and boomkin have usually been 2″ x 6″ and 2″x 4″ balks of teak respectively. “I’ve built beefier ones for people that wanted them,” Johnson said, “but I never quite saw why.” Johnson remembers. Several owners expressed the wish for a detachable bow sprit to make trailering simpler and to reduce her “marina length” from a length overall of 28′ 8″ to her on deck length of 22′ 8″. “I used to do that,” Johnson recalled. “We’ve simplified by making the spars permanent, but if an owner wanted removable ones it’s easy to do.”

The Rob Roy 23 carries 900 lbs. of ballast (including the weight of the centerboard). The shallow keel is filled on either side of the centerboard trunk with small chunks of lead held in place with casting resin. A small sump is left in the after end of the keel.

“I must admit that I designed the Rob Roy accommodations for myself,” Brewer said.

The head is forward and benefits in terms of room and privacy. It’s not ideal for use at sea, however. An optional plan moves the head to port and inserts a child’s berth to starboard. Aft of the single bulkhead is the galley—stove to port, sink to starboard. Opening portlights provide ventilation. The saloon consists of settee berths that extend under the cockpit.

They are low enough and the house sides are wide enough to make for comfortable, “no-slouch” seating throughout. The shelves outboard of the berths are convenient but minimal and would benefit from taller fiddles. Four cockpit lockers and a raft compartment below the cockpit sole make on-deck stowage one of the boat’s strongest suits. Below, the majority of stowage is forward.

The centerboard trunk is capped with solid teak and extends just a foot into the interior from the companionway. “One or two can live aboard for one or two weeks” was the refrain from owners. “Having the galley forward took some getting used to, but now I like it,” said one.

Freshwater capacity is 14.5 gallons and there is a holding tank forward.

The berths convert, via an insert, into a platform double. “The boat is unparalleled for two—good bed, good head, great lighting,” said an owner after cruising the Rob Roy (his seventh boat) for five years.

Marine Concepts offers a trailer with the Rob Roy that costs $2,850. It comes with dual axles and is made of galvanized steel. It has 14″ wheels, surge brakes, bearing buddies, a tongue jack, and a spare tire. One owner figured his towing weight to be “about 4,200 lbs.” Over the years, some owners have mentioned trailer problems, to which Johnson said that he has changed vendors.

Rob Roy 23

The standard trailer comes with custom-made beds spaced and angled to suit the boat. Given the boat’s draft, the trailer must be at least partially submerged—weight placement is critical to an easy retrieval as well as a comfortable tow. No owners have yet nominated trailering as a highlight of their Rob Roy experience.

Performance

The Rob Roy 23 is built to carry an 8-hp. Honda 4-stroke outboard in a well. (Some boats have been modified to accept a saildrive, an inboard powerhead, either gas or diesel, on a fixed vertical drive unit.) The outboard remains fixed in the well when the boat is under sail, so propeller drag is greater than if it were on a bracket or retractable. The convenience of having power on demand and the efficiency of a propeller that is mounted where it will provide good thrust even while the boat is pitching in head seas somewhat offsets the loss in sailing performance. The motor is mounted just aft of the keel which helps to diminish its parasitic drag under sail but presents the possibility of cavitation from running in aerated water under some powering conditions. The exhaust ports built into the well have proven satisfactory but many owners have increased the standard air intake (by replacing the solid well cover with a grating or adding cowl vents or cutting holes for ducts in the coaming) to relieve the tendency of the outboard to starve under load.

There is room for two 6-gallon fuel tanks in cockpit lockers.

Yawls are a rarity on the new boat market but the Rob Roy isn’t totally alone. Garry Hoyt recently introduced the Alerion Express 36 with a yawl rig. By adding a mizzen, Brewer increased the Rob Roy’s sail plan to 255 square feet. That results in a snappy sail area/displacement ratio of 20.8. Perhaps that is the root of a PHRF rating for the boat that has caused the few owners who have raced her to bemoan the experience. That sail area works fine on a reach, but upwind any mizzen, especially one set as close to the main as the Rob Roy’s, suffers from mainsail backwind. Downwind the mizzen works okay but it steals air from the main. It’s not surprising that racing yawls went out with black and white TV.

Balance, versatility, and small, easily managed sails are the virtues of the yawl rig, and the Rob Roy enjoys them all. On the flip side, this sail plan prevents the boat from accelerating as fast or developing as much horsepower as she might with the same area of sail divided into two larger units—or even lumped into one. Brewer offset this disadvantage in a number of ways. He kept the waterline beam on the slim side, cut back the forefoot, and faired the waterlines to make the hull very easily driven. The Rob Roy is a relatively light boat, even with two adults aboard. She has a minimum of wetted surface, especially with the board up. These factors make her a very respectable light air performer.

Sailing in a Buzzard’s Bay sou’wester cycling from 16 to 20 knots we saw the Rob Roy at her best. With three large men sitting to weather she cut through the chop heading upwind without dipping her rail or spilling wind from her sails. Dousing the mizzen helped her stand a bit straighter, but when we set it again it was hard to tell what difference it made. We rolled it around its spar and left it furled. Not as close-winded as sharper, deeper boats might be in waves, she picked up markedly when we cracked her off to 38° to 40°. We tacked consistently through 90°. It’s true that when you reef the center of effort moves forward and we found it nice to balance the boat by re-setting the mizzen. Across the wind we tried jib and mizzen alone and were rewarded with bursts approaching its 6- knot hull speed. Even with the wind near the top of its range we handled all sails by hand and found no need to crank on the winches. One owner described his boat as “extremely seaworthy,” noting that “She’ll lay over but she picks up stability as she goes.”

Hard bilges give the boat good initial stability. The flared hull, efficiently placed ballast and moderate sail plan all make her progressively stiffer as she heels. She’s a pleasing boat to sail in a breeze—responsive yet resistant. The helm is light and by playing with the centerboard and mizzen you can get the boat to steer herself on most points of sail. She’s dry for a boat of this size and has a predictable and deliberate motion even in a chop. There isn’t much room for that third person in the cockpit, however.

Conclusions

The Rob Roy has an appealing look all her own and some features that make good sense in a pocket cruiser. Limited accommodations means maximum space for two persons and keeps both stowage and performance capabilities from being overloaded. Her small cockpit is fine in a seaway and adequate for two but cramps her versatility as a daysailer. The yawl rig is simple and provides a built-in riding sail and virtual steer-by-the-sails control. She doesn’t have enough working sail area to be quick in light or even moderate air, but she can be sailed without winches and she handles heavy weather very well.

Marine Concepts works hard to keep its owners happy, but don’t look to Ron Johnson for much innovation. He seems almost the antithesis of Stan Spitzer, whose Rhodes 22 we reviewed in the August 1 issue. “He hates gadgets,” one owner said of Johnson. He builds conservative boats and has shown that he stands behind them. The Rob Roy’s design wrinkles, construction, and outfitting have all helped her become one of the few “offshore trailerables” available.

Price is a bit more than what Johnson predicted: $28,000, which includes sails, portable toilet and 8-hp. Honda four-stroke outboard. For those interested in a used model, the 1983, which originally sold for $16,000, is worth just $5,650-$6,500 today. A 1988 model, according to the BUC Research Used BoatPrice Guide , goes for $11,600-$13,200.

where can we get detailed schematics of Rob Roy Yawl ?

Yes, I’ve looked everywhere online for some kind of schematic of my 1987 Rob Roy 23’. I even tried to contact Ted Brewer the designer, his web page says you can get owner sets for production boats. The phone number isn’t good and email is full.

I may be able to help. I bought a 1987 Rob Roy 23 last August. It’s now in winter storage, but I’ve been looking thru a box of paper work that came with the boat. It appears to be a complete set of plans & specifications.

Hey Brad, sorry i didnt get back with you sooner. I felt like this wouldnot be answeredi guess. I just subscribed to practical sailor and found your response. So sorry to hear Ted Brewer passed. Thank you for that information. Would love to get copy of Rob Roy schematic! Do you raise your mast by hand or use mechanisms. Everyone says we should be able to just walk the mast up usinf rolling furler jib as leverage. It seems risky to me?

Btw… Ted Brewer passed away last year. There was a nice tribute to him in Good Old Boat magazine.

The Ericson 41's solid build and stylish 1960s lines offer an offshore-ready cruiser with class. The slender cockpit means you can brace yourself with a foot on the the leeward side. Which, as it turns out, makes you look classy as well. (Photo/ Bert Vermeer)

  • The iboats forum moderators would like to mention to all the iboaters here that we’re sorry but the website server seems to be running on half a cylinder and in order to post pictures, etc. you may have to use an outside hosting source, which we understand is not ideal, but its all we got at present. We are hoping that the administration can rectify this issue soon, but unfortunately at this time we can make no promises as to when... we have been working on letting the higher powers that be 'know of the situation... hang in there iboaters, we've been through a lot over the years and this is just another rough weather system rolling through to endure is all. Thank you.

New to the boating scene, Johnson RDS-23 40 Hp

Hello All I recently aquired a 1958 14 ft Mirro Craft, Highlander trailer and Johnson RDS-23, 40 Hp motor. They were last in the water 3 years ago and ran strong from what I am told. Since I am new to boating I was wondering if this forum can answer some questions for me. What is the correct fuel/oil ratio for this motor and what type of oil should I use?

Re: New to the boating scene, Johnson RDS-23 40 Hp I don't know about the 50:1. That's a 1961 Big Twin, there, and I believe OMC had those at 24:1 until 1964. Maybe you know something I don't in that regard, though.

Re: New to the boating scene, Johnson RDS-23 40 Hp Thanks guys. I'll let you know when I have this puppy in the water.

Considered to be a "maxi-trailerable", the Precision 23 far outstrips many boats in terms of true usable space, both on deck and below. Special emphasis has gone into giving the P-23 her particular bright and uncluttered interior. The bulkheads are intentionally trimmed back to avoid subdividing the visual space. Of special note, the typical intrusive mast compression support post has been eliminated by clever use of a rugged overhead support beam fiberglassed to the deck. The especially large companionway, multiple cabin ports and forward hatch contribute to the feeling of light & open space. The double berth forward is generous and there are full sized berths aft which will accommodate 3 more.
The portable head has a dedicated space forward and the fixed galley is aft where it is convenient to both cabin and cockpit.

The Precision 23 hull represents a very careful refinement of the basic form that has proven so successful in all of our well known trailerable cruisers. Lively performance, reliable handling and high stability are all the hallmarks of these designs. They feature a sharp waterline entry, substantial topside flare forward and powerful quarters taper to a shapely transom. This precise combination of features avoids the trim and handling problems that less well balanced hulls suffer when heeled. This design provides a reassuring margin of both reserve buoyancy forward and ensures more knockdown stability.

For trailerable boats, winged keels and water ballast are more of an inexpensive expedient than a sensible design. The well proven internally ballasted shoal draft fixed keel with fiberglass centerboard used in the Precision 23 is the most practical solution for combining upwind efficiency and stability. This design allows the dense internal lead ballast to be placed as low as possible for increased stability. And the fiberglass centerboard is easily raised/lowered by a simple Dacron line. The centerboard provides lift for great pointing ability yet is easily raised up for increased off wind sailing.

The P-23 features a simple fractional rig mast that is easy put up and with her short spreaders & inboard chainplates, upwind performance is impressive.

A generous cockpit 7' 3" long with coamings high enough to keep your crew secure and the low sleekly styled cabin house provides excellent visibility forward. Viking, renamed Bess in 2002 upon our purchase was built by Hubert Johnson in 1930 for Mr. Swinglehurst of New York. He passed away in 1932 and the boat was sold in 1934 to Max Nydegger who kept her in his boathouse on Lake Winnepasake until his death in 1964. Title then passed to his daughter Mrs. Hugh E. Thomson then her son Hugh E. Thomson Jr. until 1986 when the property was sold. The boat was purchased by Steve Camann of Manchester NH. He promptly had the boat refit and repowered, replacing the original Chrysler Ace with a Flagship 283, by New England Boat & Motor, Inc. Laconia New Hampshire. I purchased her from Mr. Camann in 2002. I relocated her to Sausalito CA for use at Lake Tahoe. During my 20 year custody, she has been totally restored twice, 2002, 2015. She was repowered again in 2018. Fresh varnish and paint 2022. She is warehouse stored during off season and is lift launched during use. She is comfortable big boat, safe and roomy for up to 10 passengers and their gear. As a semi displacement boat, she comes up on plane easily and cruises dry and safe. She can be seen in Florida, Cape Coral, or at the Mt. Dora ACBS show in March. She is a unique boat that needs a new caretaker for the next 20 years.

Ukrainian president announces review of military medical commissions after corruption revelations

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that a review of military medical commissions is underway following revelations that some had accepted bribes to help Ukrainians evade conscription.

During his nightly address on Wednesday, Zelensky said that “the inspection of military medical commissions across the country is underway.”

Thousands of military-aged men have avoided conscription and fled abroad since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 with the help of bribes and “unreasonable decisions” by military medical commissions, the president said.

On Tuesday, the Security Service of Ukraine reported that an investigation is underway into the head of the military medical commission in Kyiv region who is suspected of allowing over 50 men of enlistment age to evade the draft in exchange for bribes on the basis of fictitious documents about “bad” health.

According to the security service, the head of the military medical commission and five others were a part of the criminal scheme that helped men who wanted to evade the draft and flee abroad.

Zelensky said all of those who accepted bribes would be brought to justice.

Zelensky noted that “the criminal proceedings are currently underway” against the staff of military medical commissions and medical social expert commissions of Ukraine.

“The list of those who went abroad due to obviously dubious decisions of MMCs will be analyzed separately,” he noted, adding that these are “at least thousands of people.”

Zelensky also announced his intention to equate corruption with treason during wartime in his interview with Ukrainian media on Sunday. Zelensky said the Ukrainian parliament will get a proposal from him “in the coming week.”

Russia saw the largest drone assault since the start of the war. Here are other headlines you should know

An explosion is seen in the sky over Kyiv, Ukraine, during a Russian missile strike on Wednesday, August 30, 2023.

Six Russian regions, including Moscow, came under attack early Wednesday in the  biggest drone assault  on its territory since the full-scale invasion began last February. Russian officials haven’t reported any casualties and claimed to have thwarted almost all of the strikes.

A Kremlin spokesman has attributed the assault to the “continued terrorist activity of the Kyiv regime.”

Mykhailo Podolyak, the adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said the  attacks  are an indication the “war is increasingly moving to Russia’s territory.” The official, however, stopped short of claiming responsibility for last night’s attacks.

Residents told CNN of their panic and fear as the city was shaken by the powerful assault.

Here are other headlines you should know:

  • Ukraine attacks on Russia: An attack on the election headquarters of a pro-Russian party in the occupied Kherson region has been claimed by a Ukrainian insurgent group. The group, Atesh, says it blew up the headquarters of the United Russia Party in Nova Kakhovka on Tuesday. The group said three Russian soldiers were killed in the attack, a claim that was denied by a pro-Russian politician in the area. Additionally, one person has died and 13 were injured as a result of Ukrainian shelling of Russian-occupied Donetsk region, according to the head of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) Denis Pushilin. And the Russian Volunteer Corps (RVC) guerilla group claimed responsibility for  an August 27 drone  on the Russian region of Kursk, saying that it worked in tandem with the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU).
  • On the ground developments: Six Ukrainian pilots were killed during a combat mission near Bakhmut, Yevhen Rakita, spokesperson for the Igor Sikorsky 18th Separate Army Aviation Brigade, told national broadcaster Suspilne on Wednesday. Russian air defense forces also shot down a Ukrainian missile over eastern Crimea and two drones over the Bryansk region, which borders northeastern Ukraine, on Wednesday, Russian officials said.
  • Prigozhin plane crash: Russia is considering the possibility of “deliberate” action in its investigation of the plane crash that killed Wagner boss  Yevgeny Prigozhin , but Moscow will not allow international authorities to intervene, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Wednesday. The possibility of a “deliberate atrocity” is one of many scenarios under consideration, Peskov said.
  • Ukrainian precautions: The northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv has set up 60 classrooms in its subway ahead of the start of the school year in September, the mayor said in a statement. The underground classrooms will accommodate around 1,000 students, with plans to set up even more classrooms to allow for safe in-person education several days a week, Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said.
  • Potential arms deal: Russia and  North Korea  are “ actively advancing ” their negotiations over a potential arms deal that would provide significant ammunition for different types of weapons systems, including artillery, in the latest indication that the Kremlin is desperate to obtain further materiel for its failing invasion of Ukraine, according to newly released US intelligence. The news of the potential deal comes despite North Korea’s public claims to the contrary.
  • Grain discussions: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will hold meetings on grain supplies in Moscow this week, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement Wednesday. Lavrov and Fidan will discuss alternatives to  the Black Sea grain deal  that is no longer in effect, during meetings in the Russian capital on Thursday and Friday, the ministry said.

Pro-Ukrainian Russian guerillas claim responsibility for Sunday's drone strike on Russia's Kursk region

The Russian Volunteer Corps (RVC) guerilla group claimed responsibility for an August 27 drone on the Russian region of Kursk, saying that it worked in tandem with the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU).

On August 27, the Russian defense ministry claimed it destroyed the drones that were launched at the Kursk region. The RVC has disputed this and accused both the Russian defense ministry and the Kursk governor of covering up that a stray air defense missile hit a residential high-rise building. CNN cannot independently verify these claims.

The Russian Ministry of Defense, the Kursk governor and the SBU have not commented on the RVC’s claims.

The Russian Volunteer Corps is a guerilla group made up of Russian citizens fighting on the side of Ukraine. In March, the group claimed responsibility for a cross-border attack on Bryansk, a Russian region bordering Ukraine.

War in Ukraine caused "one of the most disruptive periods" for global food security, US intel shows

Pakistani workers sort the wheat in a. warehouse in Karachi, Pakistan, on July 26.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine caused deep disruptions in the global food supply, raising prices and increasing the risk of food insecurity in poorer nations in the Middle East and North Africa, America’s top spy agency said in an  unclassified report  released by Congress on Wednesday.

The direct and indirect effects of the war “were major drivers of one of the most disruptive periods in decades for global food security,” the eight-page report found — in large part because Ukraine and Russia were among the world’s largest pre-war exporters of grain and other agricultural products.

Although food security concerns have abated since the start of this year, according to the report, the future trajectory of global food prices likely will depend in part on what happens with the Black Sea Grain Initiative , which Russia ended in July. The deal, facilitated by the United Nations, had allowed Ukrainian agricultural shipments to safely exit Black Sea ports and reach the international market.

How much acreage Ukraine is able to cultivate as the war continues to rage and the cost and availability of fertilizers will also have an impact on global food prices, the report found. Global fertilizer prices reached near-record levels in mid-2022 as global oil and natural gas prices rose.

Droughts last year in Canada, the Middle East, South America and the United States also compounded the war-related stress on global food supplies, according to the report.

Intelligence officials have  accused Russia in the past  of weaponizing food supplies by blocking Ukrainian exports, destroying infrastructure and occupying Ukrainian agricultural land.

Citing satellite imagery and open-source reporting, the report said that Russia stole nearly 6 million tons of Ukrainian wheat harvested from occupied territories in 2022. Cargo ships used to transport the stolen grain out of Russian-occupied territories in 2022 would steer along the coast of Turkey to deliver shipments to ports in Syria, Israel, Iran, Georgia and Lebanon, the report said.

“We cannot confirm if the buyers of the Russian cargoes were aware of the grains’ Ukrainian origin,” the report said.

Russia says it shot down a cruise missile over eastern Crimea and 2 drones over Bryansk region

Russian air defense forces shot down a Ukrainian missile over eastern Crimea and two drones over the Bryansk region, which borders northeastern Ukraine, on Wednesday, Russian officials said.

“Air defense forces shot down a cruise missile in the eastern part of Crimea. I ask everyone to remain calm and trust only official sources of information,” Sergey Aksyonov, Russia-appointed head of Crimea, said in a Telegram post.

His advisor, Oleg Kryuchkov, said the fragments of the missile set the grass in the field on fire. “Emergency services are working on the scene,” Kryuchkov said.

Aksyonov and Kryuchkov didn’t provide additional details about the missile.

Aleksandr Bogomaz, governor of Russia’s Bryansk region, said two drones were shot down Wednesday.

“Two aircraft-type unmanned aerial vehicles were shot down over the Bryansk region,” Bogomaz said, adding there were no casualties or damage.

EU’s top diplomat on Ukraine: "We have to work on looking for peace. But this peace has to be a just peace"

CNN’s Christiane Amanpour speaks with the European Union’s top diplomat Josep Borrell.

The European Union’s top diplomat Josep Borrell stressed Wednesday that the efforts must be maintained to search for peace in Ukraine, but that it “has to be a just peace.”

Speaking to CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, Borrell said it was “difficult to believe that peace negotiations can take place” right now, given the relentless Russian attack on Ukrainian cities.

Russia and Turkey's foreign ministers will discuss grain supplies during meetings in Moscow

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will hold meetings on grain supplies in Moscow this week, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement Wednesday.

Lavrov and Fidan will discuss alternatives to the Black Sea grain deal that is no longer in effect, during meetings in the Russian capital on Thursday and Friday, the ministry said.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry also said on Wednesday that Fidan will be traveling to Russia on Thursday and Friday.

“During the visit, issues on our bilateral agenda as well as regional and global developments will be discussed,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a brief statement.

1 killed and 13 wounded in Ukrainian shelling of Russian-occupied Donetsk region, official says

One person has died and 13 were injured as a result of Ukrainian shelling of Russian-occupied Donetsk region, according to the head of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) Denis Pushilin.

“Peaceful towns of the Republic endured another day of fierce shelling by Ukrainian armed formations. One man was killed […] thirteen were wounded, including two minors,” Pushilin said.

The casualties occurred in and around the city of Donetsk, he said. Houses and civilian infrastructure were also damaged, Pushilin added.

6 Ukrainian pilots killed during combat mission near Bakhmut, brigade spokesperson says

Six Ukrainian pilots were killed during a combat mission near Bakhmut, Yevhen Rakita, spokesperson for the Igor Sikorsky 18th Separate Army Aviation Brigade, told national broadcaster Suspilne on Wednesday.

“On August 29, six pilots from the Igor Sikorsky 18th Separate Army Aviation Brigade were killed in the Bakhmut sector. It happened while performing a combat mission,” Rakita said.

Rakita also noted all six pilots held the rank of officer and that the details of the incident are not being disclosed due to security reasons.

Pskov airport to resume operations on Thursday, Russian authorities say

Pskov airport will resume operations on Thursday, regional Gov. Mikhail Vedernikov said in a statement published Wednesday on his Telegram channel.

“The results of the inspection of the state of the civil infrastructure of Pskov airport have been summed up. In short: everything is in order! From tomorrow, the airport will resume normal operations,” Vedernikov said.

Late Tuesday night, Russian authorities reported drone attacks in Russia’s northwestern Pskov region, which caused damage to four IL-76 military aircraft at the airport. The airport is used for both civilian and military aircraft.

Six Russian regions, including Moscow, came under attack early Wednesday in the biggest drone assault on its territory since the full-scale invasion began last February. Russian officials haven’t reported any casualties and claimed to have thwarted almost all of the strikes.

Russia and North Korea "actively advancing" in negotiations to reach arms deal, according to US intelligence

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met with Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and his delegation, North Korean state media KCNA reported on July 26, 2023.

Russia and North Korea are “actively advancing” their negotiations over a potential arms deal that would provide significant ammunition for different types of weapons systems, including artillery, in the latest indication that the Kremlin is desperate to obtain further materiel for its failing invasion of Ukraine, according to newly released US intelligence.

The news of the potential deal comes despite North Korea’s public claims to the contrary.

The Biden administration said Wednesday that it remains concerned that the two pariah states are in the middle of arms negotiations and that following Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu’s trip to North Korea last month a second delegation of Russian officials have visited Pyongyang for follow up discussions on a potential deal.

In addition to the second delegation, Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un have exchanged letters “pledging to increase their bilateral cooperation,” according to John Kirby, National Security Council strategic communications coordinator.

Meanwhile, Amb. Linda Thomas-Greenfield, US representative to the United Nations, accused Russia and North Korea of negotiating arms deals. Greenfield called it “shameful” and a violation of Security Council resolutions approved by Russia.

The public disclosure of the new intelligence is the latest example of how the Biden administration plans to continue to publicize Russia’s efforts to avoid Western sanctions and source weapons for its war, as well as put North Korea on notice that the US is closely monitoring these efforts. It is also the most detailed evidence provided in recent months of Russia’s outreach to North Korea to help fuel its invasion of Ukraine.

“Under these potential deals Russia would receive significant quantities and multiple types of munitions form the DPRK, which the Russian military plans to use in Ukraine. These potential deals could also include the provision of raw materials that would assist Russia’s defense industrial base,” Kirby said, pledging that the US would take direct action to sanction any entities involved in a potential deal and urged Pyongyang to cease the negotiations.

Earlier this month, the US Treasury sanctioned a sanctions evasion network aimed at supporting arms deals between Russia and North Korea.

Kirby also said Russia’s attempts to source weapons from places like Iran and North Korea was a clear signal of Moscow’s distress.

“There is no other way to look at that than desperation and weakness, quite frankly,” the official said.

At the end of last year Pyongyang delivered infantry rockets and missiles to the Wagner private military company for their troops in Ukraine and Western officials have said that Iran has supplied Russia with weapons for use in Ukraine. Iran and North Korea have both denied these claims.

Recent drone attacks show war is "increasingly moving" to Russian territory, Zelensky adviser says

This photograph taken on January 10, 2023, shows adviser to the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, Mykhailo Podolyak, speaking during an interview with AFP in Kyiv.

Mykhailo Podolyak, the adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said the recent drone attacks on Russia are an indication the “war is increasingly moving to Russia’s territory.” The official, however, stopped short of claiming responsibility for last night’s attacks.

When referring specifically to drone attacks on the Russian northwestern region of Pskov that damaged aircrafts and grounded flights, Podolyak said the increased movement of the war into Russia’s territory “cannot be stopped.”

Without directly claiming responsibility for the attacks, the adviser said Ukraine “strictly adheres to the obligation not to use the weapons of its partners to strike Russian territory and acts exclusively within the principles of defensive war.”

He dismissed calls to avoid strikes on Russian soil as “absurd.”

More background: The attacks on Wednesday were the biggest drone assault on Russian soil since the war began. Six Russian regions including Moscow came under attack early Wednesday , while in the city of Pskov, near the Estonian border, several transport planes were reportedly damaged when drones targeted an airport. Russian officials haven’t reported any casualties, and claimed to have thwarted almost all of the strikes.

Ukraine has increasingly been emboldened to hit strategic targets inside Russia through the air in recent weeks, even as it suffers assaults on its own cities, setting up a new phase of the conflict defined by Kyiv’s apparent efforts to wear down domestic Russian support for the war.

Kyiv officials meanwhile said Russia hit the Ukrainian capital with a “massive” bombardment overnight.

CNN’s Rob Picheta, Anna Chernova and Gul Tuysuz contributed reporting to this post.

Kharkiv sets up underground classrooms for Ukrainian children returning to school

A still from video released on August, 30, 2023 of of classrooms being built underground to protect students from missiles in Kharkiv, Ukraine.

The northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv has set up 60 classrooms in its subway ahead of the start of the school year in September, the mayor said in a statement.

Kharkiv, which lies roughly 20 miles from the Russian border, was occupied by Russian forces in the early months of the war. Ukraine managed to liberate the city in September last year — but Russian forces have since tried to recapture the city, which has come under frequent bombardment for much of this summer.

The underground classrooms will accommodate around 1,000 students, with plans to set up even more classrooms to allow for safe in-person education several days a week, Kharkiv mayor Ihor Terekhov said.

The city’s subways were the main shelter for its residents during intense Russian bombardment in the first few months of the war.

Ukraine ordered mandatory evacuations in Kharkiv region earlier this month, after a local Ukrainian official said that substantial reinforcements had turned the area into the “epicenter” of hostilities.

Russia claimed to have captured several Ukrainian positions near the city of Kharkiv in recent weeks, with the eventual goal of capturing the city for a second time.

Kremlin says overnight drone attacks on Russia are "continued terrorist activity of Kyiv regime"

A Kremlin spokesman has attributed the biggest drone assault on Russian territory since the war in Ukraine began to the “continued terrorist activity of the Kyiv regime.”

The Russian President Vladimir Putin is receiving “timely and up-to-date information” on all developments, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Wednesday.

Journalists on the regular Kremlin call pressed Peksov on whether the drones that attacked the northwestern Pskov region could have been launched from the territory of neighboring Estonia or Latvia.

Some context: Russia saw the largest drone assault on its territory since the start of the war on Wednesday after six regions including Moscow came under attack.

In the city of Pskov, drones attacked an airport some 35 miles away from the Estonian border late Tuesday night, causing a fire and damage to four IL-76 military aircraft which led to the cancellation of all flights.

Russian officials haven’t reported any casualties, and claimed to have thwarted almost all of the strikes.

Ukrainian insurgent group claims responsibility for Kherson attack

An attack on the election headquarters of a pro-Russian party in the occupied Kherson region has been claimed by a Ukrainian insurgent group.

The group, Atesh, says it blew up the headquarters of the United Russia Party in Nova Kakhovka on Tuesday. The group said three Russian soldiers were killed in the attack, a claim that was denied by a pro-Russian politician in the area.

The town’s mayor Vladimir Leontiev described it as a “terrorist attack,” according to Russian state news agency TASS. “No one will disrupt our peaceful life,” he said.

Some context: Nearly half of Ukrainians held in detention centers in Kherson have been subjected to widespread torture including sexual violence, according to a report published earlier this month, compiled by the  Mobile Justice Team , part of the UK, EU and US-sponsored Atrocity Crimes Advisory Group (ACA).

The report adds that suffocation, waterboarding, severe beatings and threats of rape were other techniques commonly used against victims by Russian guards in the Kherson torture chambers.

Russia has repeatedly denied accusations of torture and human rights abuses in Ukraine despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, investigated, compiled and shared by international human rights organizations and news organizations.

"There is nothing to feel, it was just fear": Kyiv residents tell of their panic as capital hit with largest attack since spring

An explosion is seen in the sky over the city during a Russian missile strike in Kyiv, Ukraine, on August 30.

Residents of the Ukrainian capital Kyiv have told CNN of their panic as the city was shaken by a powerful assault overnight on Tuesday.

Russia conducted a “massive” attack on Kyiv using drones and missiles, killing at least two men aged 26 and 36, and injuring three others, Ukrainian officials said.

Serhii Popko, head of the Kyiv city military administration, wrote on Telegram that “Kyiv had not experienced such a powerful attack since spring.”

Lyudmyla Savchuk, a 57 year old school worker, says she doesn’t talk to relatives in Russia anymore. “My cousin says we deserve all this. They don’t believe what is happening here,” she says.

Russia to investigate “deliberate” action in Prigozhin’s plane crash, says Kremlin

Yevgeny Prigozhin, chief of Russian private mercenary group Wagner, gives an address in this still image taken from video and published August 21.

Russia is considering the possibility of “deliberate” action in its investigation of the plane crash that killed Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin , but Moscow will not allow international authorities to intervene, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Wednesday.

The possibility of a “deliberate atrocity” is one of many scenarios under consideration, Peskov said.

His comments came after Russia’s Interstate Aviation Committee reportedly rejected an offer by Brazilian authorities and the aircraft manufacturer, Brazilian company Embraer, to participate in the investigation.

The committee said that because the crash took place on Russian soil, an international investigation is unnecessary, Reuters reported Tuesday, citing the Brazilian agency.

It's 3pm in Kyiv. Here's what you need to know

Russia on Wednesday saw the most significant drone assault on its territory since the start of the war, causing airport closures and flight delays across the country.

Meanwhile, Russia fired 28 cruise missiles at Ukraine overnight, all of which were intercepted, according to Kyiv’s top general.

Below are the latest developments…

  • Russian territory: Russia has seen the biggest drone assault inside its borders since it invaded Ukraine in February 2022. Multiple regions inside Russia were targeted by drones, although Russian authorities have not reported any casualties and claim they thwarted almost all of the attacks. An earlier drone attack late on Tuesday night damaged four Russian military planes at an airport in Pskov.
  • Kyiv strikes: Russia launched a “massive” attack on Ukraine’s capital overnight using drone missiles, according to Kyiv city officials. Two men aged 26 and 36 were killed, while three others sustained injuries of varying severity.
  • Cruise missile attacks: The attack on Kyiv came amid a larger overnight assault on areas in Ukraine. In total, Russia fired 28 cruise missiles at Ukraine, all of which were intercepted by Ukrainian air defenses, Kyiv’s top general said Wednesday.
  • Military boats destroyed: Four Ukrainian military boats sailing in the Black Sea with special forces on board have been destroyed by Russian aircraft, according to Russia’s defense ministry. CNN has reached out to Ukrainian military officials for comment.
  • Prigozhin plane crash: Russia is considering the possibility of “deliberate” action in its investigation of the plane crash that killed Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin , but Moscow won’t allow international authorities to intervene, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Wednesday.

Russia sees biggest drone attack on its territory since the start of the war

Smoke billowing over the city and a large blaze in Pskov, Russia, on August 29 after a reported drone strike.

Russia has seen the most significant drone assault on its territory since the beginning of the war in February 2022, causing airport closures and flight delays across the country.

Multiple regions, including Moscow , Oryol, Ryazan, Bryansk, Kaluga, and Pskov, were targeted by drones Wednesday, although Russian authorities have not reported any casualties and claim they thwarted almost all of the attacks.

Russian air defense forces claimed to have intercepted a drone heading towards Moscow in the Ruza district of the Moscow region, Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said Wednesday morning.

In response to the security situation, all four Moscow airports temporarily suspended flight operations. According to Sobyanin, there were no casualties or reported damage at the time.

Russia’s defense ministry said its forces intercepted three Ukrainian aircraft-type drones over the Bryansk region which damaged an administrative building, while another unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) over the Oryol region was also obstructed.

The ministry also said a UAV was brought down over the Kaluga region, while two other attacks were thwarted in the Ryazan region. Local authorities confirmed the attacks saying there were no immediate reports of casualties.

In Pskov, some 600 km (370 miles) north of Ukraine, drones also attacked an airport late Tuesday night, causing damage to four IL-76 military aircrafts and leading to the cancellation of all flights. A fire broke out at the airport as a result of the attack.

Pskov region Governor Mikhail Vedernikov said that all flights remain cancelled until Thursday, “to clarify the nature of the possible damage to the runway.”

Ukraine's top general says Russia launched more than 40 aerial attacks overnight

Emergency vehicles are seen at a site of a shopping mall damaged during a Russian missile strike in Kyiv, Ukraine on August 30.

Russia fired 28 cruise missiles at Ukraine overnight, all of which were intercepted by Ukrainian air defenses, Kyiv’s top general said Wednesday.

Gen. Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Commander in Chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, said Ukraine additionally destroyed 15 of 16 drones launched by Russia.

Earlier, Ukrainian officials said Russia had conducted a “massive” drone and missile attack on Kyiv that killed at least two people.

Russia thwarts Ukrainian drone attack on Bryansk TV tower, governor says

Russian air defenses thwarted a Ukrainian drone attack on a television tower in the southwestern Bryansk region bordering Ukraine, a local official said Wednesday.

Bryansk Gov. Aleksandr Bogomaz said a fire had been extinguished and emergency services were working at the site of the alleged attack.

Earlier Wednesday, Russia’s defense ministry said Ukrainian drones were intercepted over the regions of Bryansk, Oryol and Kaluga.

Oryol Gov. Andrey Klychkov said two drones were shot down over the western region. In Kaluga, southwest of Moscow, a third drone was destroyed over Sukhinichsky district, according to its governor Vladislav Shapsha.

There were no reports of damage or injuries in the alleged attacks.

The reports come a day after four Russian aircraft were damaged in a drone attack at an airport in the western city of Pskov, officials said.

Russia launched a "massive" attack on Kyiv overnight, official says

Rescuers work at a site of buildings damaged in the night by Russian drone and missiles strike in Kyiv region, Ukraine on August 30.

Russia conducted a “massive” attack on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv on Tuesday night using drones and missiles, said Serhii Popko, head of the Kyiv city military administration, on Wednesday.

Popko said several groups of drones traveled towards Kyiv “from different directions,” and later missiles were launched toward the city from Tu-95MS strategic bombers.

Air defense forces destroyed more than 20 “enemy targets,” he added.

Two men ages 26 and 36 were killed, while three others sustained injuries of varying severity from falling debris, according to the Kyiv city military administration. Two of those injured were hospitalized.

Earlier Wednesday, Kyiv mayor’s said fire and rescue services were working at wreckage sites in the Darnitsky and Shevchenkivskiy districts.

Odesa attacks: Meanwhile, Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne reported explosions in the southern city of Odesa early Wednesday after the head of its regional military administration, Oleh Kiper, warned of Russian rocket attacks and asked residents to stay in shelter.

It's early in Kyiv. Here's what you need to know

Smoke rises in the sky over the city after a Russian missile strike in Kyiv, Ukraine on August 30.

Russian forces targeted Ukraine’s Kyiv and Odesa regions early Wednesday, according to Ukrainian officials.

Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said at least two people were killed and two others injured in the capital as fire and rescue services work at wreckage sites in the Darnitsky and Shevchenkivskiy districts.

In Odesa, Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne reported explosions after officials warned of Russian rocket attacks.

Here’s the latest updates from Russia’s war in Ukraine:

  • Russian claims: Russia on Wednesday said it destroyed four Ukrainian military boats with special forces on board in the Black Sea. Ukraine has not commented on the claim. Meanwhile, Russia also said it repelled Ukrainian drone attacks early Wednesday on several Russian regions and the occupied Crimean peninsula. It comes after four Russian aircraft were damaged in a drone attack at an airport, used by civilian and military planes, in the western city of Pskov, officials said.
  • Southern battles: Ukrainian and Russian accounts speak of heavy fighting along part of the southern front, as Kyiv’s forces try to push further toward the strategic hub of Tokmak. Much of the combat is taking place south and east of the Zaporizhzhia region village of Robotyne, which the Ukrainians claimed to have secured last week. Evacuations are underway in areas close to the front lines in the region, according to Ukrainian officials.

  • US aid: The United States is providing an additional $250 million security assistance package to Ukraine, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Tuesday. The package includes air defense missiles, artillery ammunition, Javelin systems and rockets, and mine-clearing equipment, he said.
  • Papal controversy: Ukrainian officials have criticized Pope Francis’ recent address to Russian youth , calling his remarks “imperialist propaganda.” The pontiff made a video address to the 10th All-Russian Catholic Youth Assembly in St. Petersburg on Friday, during which he urged them to view themselves as descendants of the Russian empire.
  • Warlord’s funeral: Yevgeny Prigozhin’s funeral took place “in a closed format,” a company owned by the Wagner founder said. It did not specify when the funeral took place. “Those wishing to say goodbye can visit the Porokhovskoe cemetery” in St. Petersburg, it added.
  • Prigozhin’s legacy: A Russian network of  internet trolls  has begun to spread messages online  blaming “enemies from the West ” for the  plane crash  that killed the Wagner boss last week, according to two experts who monitor the activity of the trolls. Prigozhin had previously turbo-charged the use of trolls to push messages designed to disrupt and polarize Western societies.
  • Kyiv’s take: Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said Prigozhin’s fate proves the futility of possible peace negotiations with Russia. “Prigozhin was in conflict with Putin,” he said Tuesday. “They agreed on security guarantees, and then Putin killed him. There’s no reason to believe that in other negotiations Putin would behave differently.” The Kremlin  has denied  any involvement in the crash that killed Prigozhin.

Russian missile strikes kill at least 2 in Kyiv, officials say

Rescuers work at a site of a residential building heavily damaged by a Russian drone and missile strikes attack in Kyiv region, Ukraine on August 30.

At least two people were killed and two others injured following Russian missile attacks on Kyiv early Wednesday, Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said.

Odesa attacks: Meanwhile, Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne reported explosions in the southern city of Odesa early Wednesday after the head of its regional military administration, Oleh Kiper, warned of Russian rocket attacks.

“Russian terrorists attack Odesa region with rockets,” he said, asking residents to stay in shelter.

Ukrainian military boats with special forces on board destroyed in Black Sea, Russia claims

Russian aircraft destroyed four Ukrainian military boats with special forces on board in the Black Sea, Russia’s defense ministry claimed on Wednesday.

CNN has reached out to Ukrainian officials for comment.

The Russian claim comes nearly a week after Kyiv officials said Ukrainian forces  had carried out one of their most complex and ambitious operations to date against  Russian military facilities  in the  occupied region of Crimea .

Special forces landed on the western shore of Crimea in a joint operation with the country’s Navy, Ukrainian Defense Intelligence said last week.

Drone wars: Russia’s defense ministry also said several Ukrainian drones were intercepted over various Russian regions in the early hours of Wednesday.

Three drones were intercepted over the southwest Bryansk region, one over the western Oryol region and one over Kaluga, southwest of Moscow, the ministry said.

Meanwhile in Crimea, Sevastopol Gov. Mikhail Razvozhaev said Russian air defenses repelled Ukrainian drone attacks in the area of Sevastopol Bay in the early hours of Wednesday.

Ukraine blasts Pope Francis' address to Russian youth as "imperialist propaganda"

Ukrainian  officials have criticized Pope Francis’ recent address to Russian youth, calling his remarks  “imperialist propaganda.”

The pontiff made a video address to the 10th All-Russian Catholic Youth Assembly in St. Petersburg on Friday, during which he urged them to view themselves as descendants of the Russian empire.

On Monday, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Oleh Nikolenko lambasted the pope’s speech.

The pope’s mission should be “precisely to open the eyes of Russian youth to the devastating course of the current Russian leadership” and instead he is promoting “Russian great-power ideas, that are, in fact, the reason for Russia’s chronic aggression,” Nikolenko said.

Russian military intercepts drone attack on airport in Pskov, regional governor says

The airport in Russia’s western city of Pskov — which is used for both civilian and military aircraft — came under drone attacks on Tuesday, according to the region’s governor.

In a Telegram post, Pskov Gov. Mikhail Vedernikov said he was at the scene and there were no casualties, according to preliminary information.

Vedernikov posted a video showing what appears to be a large plume of smoke coming from behind buildings in what looks like a residential area.

Russian state news agency TASS reported that “as a result of drone attacks four Il-76 aircraft were damaged,” in Pskov. A fire broke out and two aircraft were engulfed in flames, TASS said, citing emergency services

Flights over Pskov and the region have been restricted, TASS added.

US announces additional $250 million security assistance package for Ukraine

The United States is providing an additional $250 million security assistance package to Ukraine, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Tuesday.

Blinken said the package includes air defense missiles, artillery ammunition, Javelin systems and rockets, and mine-clearing equipment

The US will also supply ambulances, “spare parts, services, training, and transportation,” Blinken said.

Prigozhin's internet trolls blame West and defend Putin over Wagner chief’s death, researchers say

A Russian network of  internet trolls  has begun to spread messages online blaming “enemies from the West” for the  plane crash  that killed Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin last week, according to two experts who monitor the activity of the trolls.

Prigozhin had previously turbo-charged the use of trolls to push messages designed to disrupt and polarize Western societies. His St. Petersburg-based Internet Research Agency created hundreds of fake accounts on social networks aiming to meddle in other countries’ politics, leading the United States in 2018 to  sanction Prigozhin  for election meddling.

At that time, CNN obtained  undercover video  recorded inside the secretive Internet Research Agency, where internet provocateurs worked 12-hour shifts, aiming to distort political debate in the US.

It’s unclear whether the Internet Research Agency still exists, especially in the light of US sanctions and the  short-lived mutiny  led by Prigozhin at the end of June. But two groups of independent analysts —  Bot Blocker  and  Chef’s Trap  — have been analyzing several dozen Russian troll accounts on the social networks Vkontakte and X, formerly known as Twitter.

Ukrainian rocket attack kills civilians, Russian governor says

A Ukrainian cross-border rocket attack killed an unspecified number of people, including a child, in Russia’s southwestern Bryansk region, the local governor said Tuesday.

Gov. Alexander Bogomaz said on Telegram that the Ukrainian military had fired at the village of Klimovo with multiple launch rocket systems.

Bryansk and other Russian regions bordering Ukraine have come under almost daily attack in recent months, with Russian officials saying Ukrainian drones and shelling have wounded or killed civilians.
