Review of Liberty 458

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

The Liberty 458 is equipped with a long keel. A full keel provide a better directional stability than a similar boat with a fin keel; on the other hand, better directional stability means also that the boat is more difficult to handle in a harbour with less space.

The boat can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 1.92 - 2.02 meter (6.30 - 6.60 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The boat is typically equipped with an inboard Ford Lehman diesel engine at 90 hp (67 kW).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 8.5 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Liberty 458 is about 323 kg/cm, alternatively 1810 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 323 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1810 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 36m 2 (387 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Quality offshore boat that is ready to go. The Liberty 458 is a semi custom very high end Taiwanese built boat designed by Peter Hoyt and built in the Shin Fa yard. The Hoyt family wanted to provide people with a safe and affordable bluewater cruiser and based the hull design off the more well known Peterson 44. The owners have taken good care of Delphinia. The boat is in excellent condition well worth a look. Some of the equipment list

 • Description

"Delphinia" is a 45' cutter rigged monohull sailboat designed by Peter Hoyt and built in monolithic fiberglass with balsa core on deck and encapsulated iron ballast. Hull form is raked stem with cutaway forefoot, long fin keel and skeg hung rudder, flush foredeck, raised cabin with center cockpit aft of amidships, raised aft deck and wineglass transom.

In the bow below deck is a large sail locker, anchor locker with the bow thruster motor therein, followed by the forward stateroom with large double berth surrounded by stowage lockers. Aft to port is a hanging locker followed by a sink and vanity with drawers beneath. Aft to starboard a hanging locker with the Cruise RO 200 gpd watermaker followed by the freshwater supplied head and shower. The main saloon follows next with a large L shaped dinette to starboard and settee to port, both with stowage beneath and outboard.

aft to starboard the galley is followed by the aft head with separate shower. Stairs amidships lead up to the companionway and cockpit, with the engine room behind. Under the base of the companionway steps new aluminum diesel tanks have been fitted, capacity 150 gallons. Workmanship appears to be excellent. To port a passageway with nav station and desk leads to the master stateroom aft, with a large double berth and 50 gal holding tank with macerator beneath

Forward on deck the anchor roller, on a substantial spareman, is followed by the masthead forestay with Harken roller furler, followed by the 12v electric Maxwell Nilsson anchor windlass, recently rebuilt, followed by the inner forestay also with Harken roller furler for the staysail. Two opening hatches on the foredeck provide access and ventilation to the anchor and sail locker and to the forward cabin.

The raised cabin with keel stepped mast is bound on either side by side decks leading to the center cockpit and aft raised deck. These side decks and the foredeck have been recently resheathed in an attractive artificial teak tread. Instruments above the companionway hatch are followed by seating on each side of the cockpit, with the helm mounted on a binnacle in the center.

The aft deck still has the original teak tread, well worn but in good condition, and has a useful table which also serves as the box for the Bauer dive compressor. This is followed by two teak storage lockers come seats, followed by the dinghy davits. The various awnings in the area of the cockpit are attractive and in good condition.

Liberty 458?

Looking to the future for a live-aboard, this boat has really sparked my interest, its featured in the recent L&A. There is not much info on them, probably because of the low production number, but everything I have read states its a great live-aboard/cruiser, well built, great storage, etc...but doesn't say much about it sailing characteristics. Any comment would be appreciated.

liberty 458 sailboat

I also came across this boat when doing our LA search last year. Great layout, pretty boat but I read that it does not sail especially well upwind or in light air. No direct experience though. I think it also suffered from thru-deck prisms leaking over time. And they are fairly old at this point. Lots of interior teak. More info can be found here: Liberty Sailing-yachts

I have investigated them from time to time at a Buddie's (Bubba2's) recomendation. These boats have a cult like following and do not last long on the open market. I recommend deleting your post. The less that know of them the better off you are. LOL. Relax everybody, it was a joke.

The two boat featured in L&A's were friends of ours, both liveaboards, and both are in the South Pacific at the moment. I really liked the boat. They were a compromise, but sailing was actually not bad, and a great layout for a liveaboard. And the original construction was top notch. When we looked for a larger boat, we looked at one and that is where the issues began. The boats were all made in the 80's and most needed several projects to bring them back to their past glory. The issue that you will find is that they are a cult boat, and are usually priced high compared to other boats. http://www.yachtworld.com/core/list...im=quick&ybw=&sm=3&Ntk=boatsEN&currencyid=100

I really like The Liberty 458. If I was to buy a heavy, center cockpit cruiser for long term cruising - the Liberty 458 would be high on my list. I have been aboard (not sailed) one, and the layout is IMHO excellent for a cruising couple. I especially like the configuration with the forward statesroom like an office / den area. The lower berth pulls out to become a double pullman for the times you have visitors. Interior Joinery is top notch. Storage galore. Large saillocker aft of the chainlocker accessible via hatch from deck or via access door in the front head. Superb galley layout for a center cockpit. Good Nav station. Large engine room with godd access. Palatial aft states room. Some negatives: - I do not like the vanity in the aft statesroom, should be in the head compartment. - The cockpit is small even for a center cockpit. Not long enough to properly stretch out. (this is somewhat counteracted by the large aft deck with plenty of space for two deck chairs for the sunny days.) - The cockpit may not be suitable for tall people. The vessel I was on had the canvas (bimini) as high as possible below the boom gallows. I had about 1" in between top of my head and the bimini. I am 5'10" If you are going to raise the bimini, you need to raise the boom gallow which may not be feasible without raising the goose neck, It would be interesting to hear from Liberty 458 owners if this is a problem for them. - Deck prisms - nice but leaky waiting to happen? - Teak decks....

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

 • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
 • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

 • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
 • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

 • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
 • LOA: Length overall in feet
 • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Said to be An extended version of the PETERSON 44 hull design with a different deck and coach roof. Another version is the DELTA 46 from the same yard but with a different interior and originally intended for the European charter trade.

Prior to 1958, the last defense of the America’s Cup had been in 1937, by the J-Class yacht Ranger , owned by Harold S. “Mike” Vanderbilt. The J-Class rules prescribing a vessel of some 120 feet in length were promoted by Vanderbilt and others for the defense planned for 1958, but economic concerns and the desire among aspiring competitors to employ smaller dual-purpose yachts won the day. The New York Yacht Club settled on the twelve-meter class rules, reducing the length of the average vessel to around sixty-five feet. Harry Sears, then the club’s commodore, formed a syndicate to build the ship and asked Briggs to join to help with finances.

Although building and racing his cars had long been Briggs’ primary field of endeavor, he had never stopped sailing, and he agreed to join the effort. Sailing legend Cornelius Shields was appointed as the team’s skipper but, when he suffered a heart attack, Sears asked Cunningham to take Shields’ place.

As a member of five East Coast yacht clubs, with almost thirty years’ experience racing several different classes of vessel, Briggs was a solid choice to lead. The one thing he lacked was experience with the starting strategy required by the head-to-head style of America’s Cup competition. Shields, a master of this type of racing, was happy to impart his knowledge to Cunningham, who proved an able student.

Unfortunately, as skipper it was Briggs who had to inform Shields that he could not remain a member of the crew; if he suffered an attack during competition and had to be taken to the hospital, it would leave them a man short and result in their disqualification. It was a tough moment for both men, but it was also characteristic of both to do what was best for the team.

The eliminations for the American side would prove to be more exciting than the final races. Four twelve-metre yachts, Easterner , Weatherly , Vim and Columbia , survived two months of run-offs to compete in the final eight-day round of match races to determine the defender of the America’s Cup. Of the four contenders, only the Vim had raced previously, but the nineteen-year-old vessel was so completely refitted as to be virtually brand new. The Easterner and Weatherly had been hurriedly completed and neither was fully prepared to compete, although the Weatherly would successfully defend the Cup in 1962.

Columbia benefited from a strong syndicate whose membership included Harry Sears, Olin Stephens, the designer of the Vim , and Cornelius Shields, Jr., who occasionally spelled Briggs as skipper. The competition finally narrowed to Vim and Columbia , which prevailed by virtue of her ability to better handle rough seas and strong winds.

The British challenger, Sceptre , entered by the Royal Yacht Squadron and skippered by Graham Mann, was a quite rotund 68,000 pounds compared to the svelte Columbia at 57,000 pounds, and the event was decided in four straight wins by the Americans.

During the post-race celebrations, Briggs located a pay phone and called Alfred Momo at Watkins Glen, where Ed Crawford had just won the main race. As Briggs was returning to join his crew, a reporter approached and commented, “Briggs, that was a fine race!” to which Briggs, still with the Glen on his mind, replied, “That’s what I just heard. I wish I could have seen it.”

VESSEL REVIEW | Sinichka – Electric commuter boats designed for Russia’s Moskva River

Photo: Moscow Deptrans

A series of three new electric monohull commuter ferries have already begun operational sailings on the Moskva River in the Russian capital Moscow.

Built by Russian shipyard Emperium, sister vessels Sinichka , Filka , and Presnya – all named after rivers in Moscow – are being operated by the Moscow Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development (Moscow Deptrans). They are the first units of a planned fleet of 20 vessels that will serve the capital city and other nearby communities. The new ferry system will be the water transport system to be operated on the Moskva River in 16 years.

Each vessel has a welded aluminium hull, an LOA of 21 metres, a beam of 6.2 metres, a draught of only 1.4 metres, a displacement of 40 tonnes, and capacity for 80 passengers plus two crewmembers. Seating is available for 42 passengers on each ferry, and the main cabins are also fitted with USB charging ports, wifi connectivity, tables, toilets, and space for bicycles and scooters. The cabin layout can be rearranged to allow the operator to adjust the distances between the seats and to install armrests of varying widths.

Photo: Moscow City Government

An open upper deck is also accessible to passengers and is the only area on each ferry where smoking is allowed.

The ferries are all of modular construction with each ferry's wheelhouse, main cabin, and other structural elements being built as complete, separate components. This enables the ferries to be easily dismantled for transport to anywhere in Russia by rail and then quickly re-assembled within seven days.

The ferries are also ice-capable. Recently completed operational trials on the Moskva showed that the vessels can also easily navigate under mild winter conditions with broken surface ice, though year-round operations are planned for the entire fleet.

The ferries are each fitted with 500kWh lithium iron phosphate battery packs that supply power to two 134kW motors. This configuration can deliver a maximum speed of 11.8 knots, a cruising speed of just under 10 knots, and a range of 150 kilometres.

Emperium said the transfer of rotation of electric motors to the propeller is carried out by direct drive. As a propulsion installation, a pulling rotary propeller-steering column with double screws is used. The installation of double pulling screws, with similar power, allows an operator to increase the efficiency of the propulsion system to deliver a slightly higher speed or to reduce energy consumption. This arrangement also provides the ferries with enhanced manoeuvrability necessary for navigating in close quarters.

The batteries themselves have projected service lives of 10 to 12 years and are fitted with safety features such as built-in fire extinguishers and gas vents. Quick-disconnect features allow the batteries to be easily removed for replacement or maintenance.

Some of our readers have expressed disquiet at our publication of reviews and articles describing new vessels from Russia. We at Baird Maritime can understand and sympathise with those views. However, despite the behaviour of the country's leaders, we believe that the maritime world needs to learn of the latest developments in vessel design and construction there.
