Summary Analysis of the Design Ratios for the Norseman 447

eBook: How to Avoid Buying the Wrong Sailboat

1. A Sail Area/Displacement Ratio of 16.3 suggests that the Norseman 447 will, in the right conditions, approach her maximum hull speed readily and satisfy the sailing performance expectations of most cruising sailors.

2. A Ballast/Displacement Ratio of 42.9 means that the Norseman 447 will stand up well to her canvas in a blow, helping her to power through the waves.

3. A Displacement/Length Ratio of 237, tells us the Norseman 447 is a moderate displacement cruiser, which means she'll carry all your cruising gear without it having a dramatic effect on her performance. Most of today's sailboats intended for offshore cruising fall into this displacement category.

4. Ted Brewer's Comfort Ratio of 35.9 suggests that crew comfort of a Norseman 447 in a seaway is similar to what you would associate with the motion of a moderate bluewater cruising boat - a predictable and acceptable motion for most seasoned sailors.

5. The Capsize Screening Formula (CSF) of 1.7 tells us that a Norseman 447 would be a safer choice of sailboat for an ocean passage than one with a CSF of more than 2.0.

The Norseman 447 Sailboat: A Review

The Norseman 447, is a bluewater cruiser that was designed by the famous yacht designer Robert Perry and built by Ta Shing Yacht Building Ltd between 1980 and 1986

The Norseman 447 is recognized as Perry's "masterpiece", and for good reasons. It combines performance, comfort and safety in a well-balanced package that has proven itself in many ocean crossings and circumnavigations. It is also a rare and sought-after boat, as only about 80 were built.

Overview The Norseman 447 is a center cockpit sloop or cutter with a length of 13.6 m (44.6 ft), a beam of 4 m (13.1 ft), and a draft of 1.92 - 2.02 m (6.3 - 6.6 ft) depending on the load. It has a displacement of 12.7 tonnes (28,000 lbs) and a ballast of 5 tonnes (11,000 lbs). It has a water capacity of 757 liters (200 gallons) and a fuel capacity of 454 liters (120 gallons).

An aft cockpit version is also available.

The Norseman 447 was designed as an owner's version or a charter version The owner's version has three cabins:

  • a large aft cabin with an ensuite head and shower,
  • a forward cabin with a V-berth and access to the forward head and shower,
  • and a smaller cabin on the port side with upper and lower berths.

The charter version has four cabins:

  • two aft cabins with double berths and shared access to the aft head and shower,
  • and a smaller cabin on the starboard side with upper and lower berths.

The Norseman 447 has a deck-stepped mast with either a sloop or a cutter rig The sloop rig has a single headsail and a mainsail with in-mast or in-boom reefing.

The cutter rig has two headsails: a genoa and a staysail, and a mainsail with in-mast or in-boom reefing. The spars are made of aluminum, but some boats have carbon fiber spars. The mast height is about 18.9 m (62 ft) above the waterline.

The Norseman 447 has a fin keel with either a deep draft or a shoal draft option. The deep draft option has a keel depth of 2.02 m (6.6 ft) and the shoal draft option has a keel depth of 1.92 m (6.3 ft). The keel is made of lead and is bolted to the hull. The rudder is a skeg-hung rudder that is protected by the keel.

The Norseman 447 has a wheel steering system with either a center or an aft cockpit option. The center cockpit option has more space for the aft cabin and more protection from the weather. The aft cockpit option has more space for the cockpit and more access to the stern platform.

Accommodation The Norseman 447 has a spacious and comfortable interior that can accommodate up to eight people in four cabins. The interior is finished in teak woodwork with white panels and cushions. The layout is symmetrical and functional, with plenty of storage and ventilation.

The main saloon is located amidships and has a U-shaped settee and a large table on the starboard side, and a straight settee and a smaller table on the port side. The tables can be lowered to create extra berths if needed. The saloon has several opening hatches and ports for light and air.

The galley is located on the port side aft of the saloon and has a double sink, a three-burner stove with oven, a refrigerator, a freezer, and ample counter space and storage. The galley is well-equipped for cooking and entertaining on board.

The navigation station is located on the starboard side aft of the saloon and has a large chart table, a swivel seat, and an array of instruments and electrical panels. The navigation station is well-organized and convenient for planning and monitoring the voyage.

The aft cabin is located under the center cockpit and has a queen-sized berth, a hanging locker, a dresser, a vanity, and an ensuite head with shower. The aft cabin is the owner's suite and offers privacy and comfort.

The forward cabin is located in the bow and has a V-berth, a hanging locker, a shelf, and access to the forward head with shower. The forward cabin is ideal for guests or crew.

The port cabin is located on the port side forward of the galley and has upper and lower berths, a hanging locker, a shelf, and a portlight. The port cabin is suitable for children or extra crew.

The starboard cabin is located on the starboard side forward of the navigation station and has upper and lower berths, a hanging locker, a shelf, and a portlight. The starboard cabin is similar to the port cabin but only available in the charter version.

Hull and Deck The Norseman 447 has a solid fiberglass hull with a balsa core deck. The hull is hand-laid with alternating layers of mat and roving, resulting in a strong and stiff structure. The deck is bonded to the hull with an inward flange and secured with bolts and sealant, creating a watertight joint. The hull has a white gelcoat finish with blue stripes and cove lines. The deck has molded nonskid surfaces for traction and safety.

The Norseman 447 has a wide and uncluttered deck that allows easy movement around the boat. The deck has stainless steel stanchions, lifelines, pulpits, cleats, chocks, dorades, handrails, and grab rails for security and convenience. The deck also has several opening hatches, ports, lockers, vents, scuppers, winches, tracks, blocks, clutches, organizers, fairleads, padeyes, shackles, snaps, hooks, eyes, rings, pins, screws, nuts, bolts... you get the idea. The deck is well-equipped for sailing and anchoring.

The Norseman 447 has a cockpit that can seat up to six people comfortably. The cockpit has a pedestal with a wheel steering system that can be locked in position or disengaged for emergency tiller steering. The cockpit also has an engine control panel with gauges and switches, an instrument pod with compass and electronics, a folding cockpit table with drink holders, a bimini top with dodger for shade and protection, a stern platform with ladder for swimming or boarding, and cushions for comfort. The cockpit is the command center of the boat as well as the social area.

Mast and Rigging The Norseman 447 has either a sloop or a cutter rig that can be easily handled by one or two people. The mast is deck-stepped on a compression post that transfers the load to the keel structure. The mast is made of aluminum but some boats have carbon fiber spars for lighter weight and higher performance. The mast height is about 18.9 m (62 ft) above the waterline which allows access to most bridges but limits some anchorages.

The Norseman 447 has either single or double spreaders that are swept back to eliminate the need for running backstays. The swept-back spreaders help prevent the mast from pumping and help keep the forestay tensioned. The rigging is made of stainless-steel wire or rod, but some boats have synthetic rigging for lighter weight and lower stretch.

The Norseman 447 has a mainsail with full battens that support the sail shape and reduce fluttering. The mainsail also has a lazy jack system and a sail cover for easy stowing.

The Norseman 447 has either one or two headsails that can be roller-furled or hanked-on. The headsails are usually a genoa and a staysail, but some boats have other options such as a jib, a yankee, a drifter, or a gennaker. The headsails are attached to the forestay or the inner forestay with furling drums or hanks. The Norseman 447 has a spinnaker pole that can be used to fly a spinnaker or to pole out a headsail when running downwind. The spinnaker pole is stored on the mast and can be deployed with a topping lift and a downhaul. The spinnaker pole is made of aluminum or carbon fiber.

The Norseman 447 has a variety of sail controls that allow fine-tuning of the sail shape and performance. The sail controls include halyards, sheets, outhauls, cunninghams, vangs, travelers, cars, levers, winches, handles, cleats, cams, blocks, shackles, snaps, hooks, eyes, rings, pins, screws, nuts, bolts... you get the idea. The sail controls are well-placed and easy to operate.

Keel and Rudder The Norseman 447 has a fin keel with either a deep draft or a shoal draft option. The fin keel is made of lead and is bolted to the hull with stainless steel bolts. The fin keel provides stability and lift to the boat and allows good upwind performance. The deep draft option has a keel depth of 2.02 m (6.6 ft) and the shoal draft option has a keel depth of 1.92 m (6.3 ft).

The Norseman 447 has a skeg-hung rudder that is protected by the keel. The rudder is made of fiberglass with a stainless-steel stock and fittings. The rudder provides steering and balance to the boat and allows good maneuverability. The rudder is connected to the wheel steering system with cables and pulleys.

Conclusion The Norseman 447 is a great boat for recreational sailors who want to explore the world in comfort and style. It is a well-designed and well-built boat that offers performance, safety and versatility. It is also a rare and valuable boat that can hold its resale value well.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Review of Norseman 447

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

Unknown keel type

The boat can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 1.92 - 2.02 meter (6.30 - 6.60 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 8.2 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Norseman 447 is about 303 kg/cm, alternatively 1698 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 303 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1698 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 50m 2 (538 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Our Norseman 447, Rocinante

Rocinante  is a Norseman 447 cutter-rigged sloop, one of  Robert Perry’s  finest designs. He has even referred to it as his “masterpiece.” Built by Ta Shing, one of the most esteemed boat yards in the world, her sleek design and robust construction combine speed and overall performance in a superbly coordinated blue water passage maker. We chose the center cockpit version because of the privacy the aft cabin offers and the more centralized salon, which often doubles as our classroom. We chose this particular Norseman because she had some nice upgrades and one of the most important requirements—fiberglass, not teak decks.

Accommodations & Equipment

Rocinante sleeps 7 comfortably in 2 double bunks and 3 single bunks. The salon seats 7 for meals, muster and lessons. Her well designed galley has a 4 burner propane stove with oven & broiler, a 12v freezer and refrigerator, and salt & fresh water foot pumps.

Our auxiliary is a 2018 60hp Beta Marine diesel engine that pushes us along at 6-7 knots. Rocinante has a  Viking RescYouPro eight-person liferaft, plus an additional 4 person lifeboat , Fiorentino Para-Anchor , Shark Drogue , extensive first aid supplies, an EPIRB, Furuno radar ,  Standard Horizon VHF radio, AIS Transceiver, 3 bilge pumps, 7 fire extinguishers, and emergency Type 1 PFDs for each person. We carry 120 gallons of water, and 120 gallons of diesel. For power we have 700 amp hours of AGM battery capacity and for charging, 170 watts of SunPower solar panels . Our tender is an 8′ Portland Pudgy hard rowing dinghy w/ sailing rig.

Norseman 447/014, SEAQUEL

Norseman Yachts Inc. (Ta Shing), Norseman 447 Year Built 1982 / US$179,000

Norseman 44, SEAQUEL 1 Main

Broker's Comments

SEAQUEL is one of the highly regarded aft cockpit versions of the Perry designed Norseman 447. She was based in Wisconsin, on the Great Lakes for most of her life, until 2017. She then journeyed down to the Caribbean, and has cruised there in recent years with her Michigan based owners.

Cutter rigged with twin headsail furlers, and a regular main with lazyjacks give her an easily handled sailplan and a bowthruster makes docking easy.

The cockpit is a decent size and has a dodger, bimini and joining fly. Down below in a cozy teak interior, she has 2 decent cabins, 2 heads and a shower. The galley is to port, aft of the saloon, with a dedicated chart table opposite.

Offered to co-brokers on a commission split of 50/50.

Owner's Comments

After a decade filled with unforgettable moments and everlasting adventures, the decision to sell SEAQUEL, our aft-cockpit Norseman 447, is bittersweet. SEAQUEL has allowed us to witness numerous sunsets, explore distant shores and create lifelong memories. From the Great Lakes, through the Saint Lawrence Seaway, to offshore sailing, our Norseman lived up to its reputation for being a strong, seaworthy, bluewater boat. Whether we were navigating coastal waters or embarking on an offshore passage, this Norseman 447, with it’s efficient hull shape, full depth keel for stability, and versatile sail plan, we were assured remarkable upwind and downwind performance.

With the addition of a new bimini, dodger and connector, the already large cockpit expanded and added a large outdoor living space. The storage above and below is plentiful, with secret compartments everywhere. This aft-cockpit Norseman extends the comforts of home. Residing all but 7 years in fresh water, she has been well-maintained with many, many upgrades since purchased in 2014.

However, the difficult choice has come to sell SEAQUEL and move onto new land adventures. Therefore, this Norseman, different from many others, will be outfitted and mostly equipped and ready to sail from the start. A tender and outboard, life raft, life vests, ebirb, Danbouy, Lifesling, galley supplies, bedding, and so much more.

Our hope is that the next owner will appreciate her beauty and performance qualities as we have and create them own enjoyable journeys.

This beautiful aft-cockpit Norseman 447 is in Jolly Harbor in Antigua. Here you will find consistent tradewinds for optimal sailing conditions. Situated in the heart of the Caribbean, Antigua serves as a gateway to many destinations near and far.

Norseman 447

  • Add to quote

I am in the market for a boat. The Norseman 447 is a strong candidate. I''d appreciate any comments on the boat. I have been reading conflicting opinions. My concerns is that it''s under-powered and a cutter (need to horse the forsail around in midstay). Sam

About the headsail around the cutter stay: The cutter stay can be pulled back to the mast when not in use, but also, it''s not that difficult to bring the sail around. We have a 135% genoa on ours, and have no problem bringing the sail through the "slot".

Thanks for the advice. I am planning on going on a sea trial to test that boat. I hope I will have a chance to tack and test that rig. Do you generally sail with both forsails up?

I have seen six of the N-447''s around the USA in 2000. I found that the biggest prob. w/ N-447''s is blisters and poor prep for bottom coating. Every one of the boats had bubbles bad! Otherwise, most of the boats where in fair shape, see as many as you can before you make up your mind to buy. Get a inspection from someone you trust.

Sam - on another thread here dated maybe in 2004, it looked as though you had set sail in a Norseman 447. I'm looking at one now and wonder if you could take the time to discuss the pros and cons of the boat, sailing, maintenance, design, and living aboard. Thanks. Horton

mighty...his last post here was over two years ago...don't think you'll get an answer.

We looked at an aft cockpit 447 in 2005. We both loved the boat but it was outside our budget and it was priced low as a fixer upper. We were ready to make an offer on it and found that one had been accepted just hours before our third trip down to take a look at it. My biggest concern was the engine, which was a marinized Peugot diesel. It appeared that it would be hard to find parts for.

Thanks, Camaraderie. I noticed that he went silent a while after he sailed off, but figured I'd give it shot, anyhow. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, eh?

but it's at an age now where you could easily spend the selling on making the necessary refits you'd need for cruising. If your plan is to go cruising it gets back to the old pay me now or pay me later and the later is usually much more expensive. Unless you are really skilled in boat refits and I would suggest you pay a fair price for a really well kept example of this boat. You'll never find a lot of these on the market at any given time. Personally while I like the boat I'd try not to zero in on one boat type, especially one that wasn't built in high numbers.

Swiftsure Yachts

Shibui – quiet and tasteful – perfectly reflects the Japanese origins of her name. This Bob Perry designed Norseman 447 has been cared for by the same owners for 29 years. During that time she has cruised extensively, including a circumnavigation and multiple Pacific cruises, proving herself to be a safe and comfortable platform. Unlike many of her sisterships, she has not been unnecessarily overloaded but refreshingly shows as a “sailor’s boat”. Her owner’s experience shows in her outfitting, with consistent upgrades over time. An impressive 2017 cosmetic refit by Blackline Marine in Sidney, BC leaves her looking sharp with a proper deck paint job (all deck hardware removed), bottom stripped and barrier coated and refurbished spars. She features a Yanmar diesel, Phasor generator (new 2020), solar panels, beautiful radial cut spectra sails, Icom SSB, Monitor windvane and all the other necessary offshore gear. Truly a pleasure to be aboard, she is likely one of the nicest 447s out there and I expect she will make her next owners very happy.

Deck and Hull

In 2017, Shibui underwent a major refit at Blackline Marine in Sidney, BC. Her hull below the waterline was stripped, faired and 3 coats of Interprotect 2000 barrier coat applied. Adding to the topsides paint job completed circa 2007, she received a full Awlgrip paint job on her deck with removal of all hardware. The Treadmaster nonskid was removed, the nonskid recesses faired, and Kiwigrip nonskid applied. Her spars were stripped to bare metal, primed, painted and rewired. All work was done with the greatest detail and the invoices reflect a cost of over $100,000 Canadian dollars. At her most recent haulout in April, 2020 her propeller was serviced, hull waxed and 4 gallons of Petitt Ultima 60 were applied.

The hull is hand laid molded fiberglass with alternating mat and woven roving. The deck is hand laid fiberglass cored with end grain balsa. Hull and deck are mechanically fastened every 4″ with all through bolts for hull to deck joint accessible from below. Her underbody configuration features a fin keel and a skeg hung rudder. The ballast is lead, fully encapsulated in the keel with no bolts. All bulkheads are fiberglassed to hull and deck with tapered edges and foam compression pads against the hull. The overhead is made up of removable panels with access for wiring or backing plates.
