Great club with great members, an awesome place to relax, eat, drink, and socialize with other members. There are four full size tennis courts on property, about 15-18 docks. There are two dining outlets, Marker 14 Lounge & The Tiki Bar both have full bars and dining menus. There is a large banquet area on the third floor that can be broken down into separate halls with great production and food.

I was at the same show Julie was at and I don't know what she's talking about. She is making judgements without knowing these club members. I became one myself last year and have met some of the nicest people from all over the country. Yes must of them are considerably older but the new owner of the club, Bill Edwards is trying to bring in a younger crowd with hip bands and young comedians. But some of these people have lived in the area for decades and have been members just as long. This is a fun place and we will keep going until we drop dead, too. But they do charge a lot for drinks so get a buzz ahead of time if money is tight.

This place is the best club in Tampa Bay, by vote and by my opinion. Chef Paul runs an excellent kitchen, the pool was just resurfaced, and the pool bar is really great...and a great happy hour deal. Find out when its "free guest day" by asking the front desk attendant, and check it out. They get amazing national acts like Kevin Nealon, The Family Stone, Kevin Pollack, and the tickets are really cheap for what you get to see.

Bill Edwards event space The Club at Treasure Island has closed

A terse message on its Facebook page announced that The Club at Treasure Island, a former yacht club bought by businessperson and music producer Bill Edwards in 2009, is now “permanently closed.”

Edwards said in a phone interview that he was “tired of losing money” and that he has sold the club. The deal is still in the process of closing, so he declined to reveal the buyer or the selling price. He said he doesn’t know if the new owners will reopen the club, but he said the marina is still in operation. Future events such as weddings “are taken care of,” he said.

Edwards, 78, made his money as a mortgage lender, though that business has fallen on rough times. He gained a high profile in the community as a music producer, owner of the Sundial entertainment plaza, former owner of the Tampa Bay Rowdies, manager of the Mahaffey Theater and a prominent donor to political and civic causes.

It was at the height of this higher profile that Edwards rescued the former Treasure Island Tennis and Yacht Club from bankruptcy in 2009. He had hoped to add a second building and ballroom but said he ran into numerous hurdles from the city and withdrew. His recent plans to add condominiums around the club also ran into roadblocks, leading him to put the place up for sale. Edwards is now suing the city over his failed condo plans.

Edwards still revamped the club, bringing in top chefs and offering yachting from 41 boat slips, tennis, WaveRunner rentals, a fitness center and a swimming pool that held a weekly Sunday afternoon pool party with live music. He brought in entertainers such as Jon Secada, the Commodores, Ben Vereen, Wayne Brady, Kevin Nealon and Paul Reiser. He had dreams of turning it into the first major beachside concert venue in the area.

“Dreams don’t always come true,” Edwards said Wednesday. He lost close to $20 million since he bought it 14 years ago, he said. “That’s $20 million I wish I still had, believe me.”

Edwards sold his interest in the Sundial complex on the 100 block of Second Avenue N in St. Petersburg in early 2022 for $27.5 million. And in 2020, Edwards put up his 1.73-acre compound on Brightwaters Boulevard to sell two neighboring homes for $19.9 million.

Having divested his mortgage company and his bigger real estate properties, Edwards said his primary focus will now be his nonprofit Bill Edwards Foundation for the Arts and the running of the Mahaffey Theater.

On Monday, the club posted on its Facebook page : ”Well friends, it’s been reelz. Thanks to all who came out and made our last day so awesome. The Club at Treasure Island is now permanently closed.”

Some of the fans of the Sunday pool party were dismayed by the sudden message that offered no further explanation.

“Literally, just two days ago, they’re promoting people coming out for live music, pool, etc.,” wrote Melissa Stiles. “I’m so sad about this!”

Treasure Island Mayor Tyler Payne said he has fond memories of the club, having grown up in the beach town.

“As kids, that’s where we hung out every Friday night,” Payne said. “It’s sad to see a staple of the city closing. I just hope that something good will come of it and we’ll get a club again.”

Andrew Tavakoli buys Florida’s Treasure Island Yacht and Tennis Club

St. Petersburg business magnate Bill Edwards handed back keys to Bank OZK

The Treasure Island Yacht and Tennis Club, once owned by St. Petersburg business magnate Bill Edwards, has been acquired by California investor Andrew Tavakoli, the CEO of West Hollywood-based Tavaco Properties. 

The acquisition was made through the special purpose entity created by Bank OZK, which held the title to the property after Edwards handed the keys back to the bank last year, the Tampa Bay Times reported .

John Burpee of Seminole-based John Burpee & Associates Inc. represented Bank OZK in the transaction, and his firm managed the asset after the bank assumed ownership. 

The price was not disclosed. “They were an all-cash, fast-close buyer that could close in the bank’s timeframe,” he told the Catalyst.

Edwards, who had owned the club since 2009, transferred the title to the bank following the yacht club’s bankruptcy filing in late 2022. The club has remained closed since the summer of 2023.

The property, spanning about 7.7 acres, includes a 37,000-square-foot building, a 47-slip marina and six tennis courts. Amenities include a pool, tiki bar, restaurant, fitness center and event space.

Burpee received multiple offers from local and national buyers before finalizing the transaction, according to a news release.

Yacht clubs change hands from time to time. 

Last spring, Safe Harbor Marinas spent $149 million to buy the Montauk Yacht Club from Gurney’s, Behind the Hedges reported . The acquisition was last year, but the price had not been previously revealed.

It’s a record in numerous ways. The highest price for a Hamptons hotel sale had been another deal last year, for the 96-room Marram Montauk . That property traded for barely half as much as the Montauk Yacht Club, which regained its former name after operating as Gurney’s Star Island Resort & Marina in recent years.

Pandemic, rising interest rates force Yacht Club into bankruptcy

December 28, 2022 - The Treasure Island Yacht and Tennis Club of Pinellas County filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protections Dec. 22 in the Middle District of Florida. St. Petersburg businessman Bill Edwards told the Catalyst that “coming out of the pandemic and facing challenges with local government, it was the right business decision.” Edwards purchased the property in 2009 and filed a lawsuit against the City of Treasure Island in November due to an ongoing zoning dispute.
