Freshly launched at the 2023 Miami International Boat Show, the Viking 90 is the company’s new flagship, replacing its popular 92-footer that was launched in the 2015 model year. Viking built and delivered 21 of the 92s, and was prepared to continue, but new International Maritime Organization emission regulations required the installation of heavy, large, and potentially dangerous Selective Catalytic Reduction systems. Because the required equipment to deal with these changes neither existed nor would be available to maintain the boat’s production schedule, Viking was forced to discontinue the production of the 92.

A bitter tale perhaps, but since 1964, when Bill and Bob Healey founded the Viking Yacht Company in New Gretna, New Jersey, the builder has dealt with all sorts of stumbling blocks, including the early 1990s federal luxury tax that crushed the marine industry, and several recessions. Recent challenges include COVID-related supply-chain issues and a proposed 10-knot East Coast speed restriction due to right whale conundrums. Yet, somehow, none of these obstacles stopped Viking from carrying out its mantra to “build a better boat every day.”

Some 5,000 boats later, Viking president and CEO Pat Healey charged his design, engineering, and production teams to renew that commitment again and build a new flagship. Investing $20 million in research and creating more than 240 new molds, including hull, topside, flybridge and interior, and pouring in reservoirs of sweat equity and tens of thousands of man-hours, the unveiling of the new Viking 90 as a flagship is no fish story. As with any Viking, a new model must be as good as or better than what it replaces, and the Viking 90 is all that and more.

The cockpit and mezzanine of the Viking Yacht 90 sport-fishing boat.

Cockpit and Mezzanine

The 90’s cockpit is 224 square feet and includes a 203-gallon livewell built into the transom that can double as a fish box. A pair of 103-gallon insulated fish boxes line the cockpit sole, and each can be refrigerated or serve as a depository for the dual Eskimo ice chippers. A watertight centerline deck hatch opens to access the Seakeeper 35 gyrostabilizer for maintenance and routine inspections.

The cockpit work area resembles the 92, so there is undergunwale storage, and the lower-mezzanine seating provides air conditioning for relaxing, watching baits, and staying close to the cockpit action. Insulated boxes and other compartments stow gear, drinks and tackle, and the crew quarters are also accessed through this area. The upper mezzanine is reached by way of flanking steps from the cockpit sole and includes an L-shaped aft-facing lounge, a teak table, and an available 43-inch flat-screen television that drops down from the overhead. Another seating area to starboard provides an electric grill, a cocktail ice machine, and drawer storage. Artisan teak decking and a faux-teak bulkhead and cockpit trim work make for a custom feel.

Interior and Accommodations

Stepping into the salon through the electric sliding door, you can see that the interior matches what the 92 provided, starting with access to the enclosed bridge via a wide staircase to starboard. The 92’s interior was a hit with each owner, so the design group capitalized on those previous efforts, essentially fitting the interior accommodations of the 92 into the new 90 hull and deckhouse footprints.

A massive U-shaped lounge to port faces the starboard-side entertainment center with a 65-inch television that rises from the walnut cabinetry, which is available in either a satin or gloss finish, along with a wet bar, sink and icemaker. Slightly forward, the starboard galley with engineered-stone countertops offers tremendous space for several place settings, five bar stools, and commercial-grade appliances. Opposite the galley, there’s an immense U-shaped walnut table on a raised platform that provides a home for rod storage. There is a day head to port and a walk-in pantry to starboard that can also serve as a makeshift stateroom.

The 90-footer’s design group reworked the 92’s overnight accommodations and tweaked an inch here and there to refine the available space with the goal to streamline each stateroom while retaining the size of each bed and entryway. The master stateroom utilizes the full beam, providing a king-size walk-around bed, end tables, credenza, 65-inch television, walk-in closet, lounge seat, vanity and desk. His-and-her heads are separated by a walk-in glass-framed shower. Four other staterooms, each with a private head and fiberglass shower, provide comfort and privacy. The aft crew quarters also include a small galley and laundry center, enabling the 90 to easily spend a month at sea.

Hull No. 1 is built with a climate-controlled enclosed bridge with the skybridge option, with 9-plus feet of freeboard forward and 3-plus feet aft.

The unbroken sheerline melds these dimensions into a silky-smooth transition from bow to stern, and bridge to waterline. The enclosed bridge adds a number of features, including a second salon with an L-shaped lounge, a high-low walnut cocktail table, refrigeration, and a 43-inch pop-up television. The command helm is a home run, and especially noteworthy for its one-piece, wraparound forward windshield that maximizes the operator’s visibility without the typical distractions caused by vertical mullions. The added visibility also benefits passengers sitting in the flanking Stidd companion seats, whose view is equally unobstructed. Viking subsidiary Atlantic Marine Electronics equipped the helm with five 24-inch Seatronx MFDs, while the lower portion of the helm console is outfitted with radio boxes, instruments, SidePower bow-thruster controls, Optimus steering, and MTU engine controls.

Outside, AME complemented the aft-station layout with a pair of Seatronx 19-inch displays, which also include full engine controls and communication equipment. A sitting area is to port, separated by a ladder to the skybridge. The skybridge features the craftsmanship of Viking’s other subsidiary, Palm Beach Towers, which completed the fiberglass hardtop and added a host of accessories, including Rupp hydraulic outriggers, spreader lights, teaser reels, custom bridge railings, and a radar pod. Viking also offers the 90 convertible in an open-bridge style.

The engine room of the Viking Yacht 90 sport-fishing boat.

Engine Room and Performance

The gleaming Snow White Awlgrip-painted engine room has more than 7 feet of headroom on the centerline, with 40 inches between the main engines. Twin 2,600 hp MTUs provide walkaround accessibility to various systems, including the Furuno CSH8L sonar tube, Octoplex digital switching system, and the Optimus steering system. Components are neatly labeled, and composite seacocks help stem corrosion and reduce weight.

The centralized seawater system has been redesigned to reduce complexity and incorporates ElectroSea’s Clearline system with dual pumps to increase reliability and component longevity. A chilled-water air-conditioning system provides 18 tons of cooling with reverse-cycle heat and individual controls throughout the interior.

Twelve people were on board for our sea trial off the coast of Palm Beach, Florida. With a fuel load of 70 percent, the 90 hustled to an average top speed of 38 knots, where one pass read 39.3 knots on the GPS. At 2,100 rpm, the boat eases along at 32-plus knots to deliver a range of some 582 nautical miles.

The Viking Yacht Company hasn’t missed a beat in nearly 60 years of continuous production, and the passing of its 92 is just another milestone in the company’s history. So, it’s safe to say, with 16 90-footers already on order, the beat goes on.

Viking Yachts 64 Convertible

Most buyers of the Viking Yachts 64C are likely to be serious anglers, which is why the 180-square-foot cockpit is arranged for pelagic pursuits.

The cockpit’s uncluttered layout is the result of thousands of hours of experience aboard other Vikings in big-game tournaments around the globe. The 64C I got aboard had a leaning post/rod holder that bolted into an aluminum backing plate laminated in the cockpit sole, with double-hatch fish boxes on each side. Abaft that, a rounded teak cap rail held a livewell. Overlooking the whole scene was a mezzanine for crew to keep an eye on the spread, along with tackle stowage and a cold box. This 64C also had a Dometic ice machine on the port side for chilling down the fish boxes.

But great fishing setups aren’t the only thing Viking has experience building. Inside, the 64C has the same high-end fit-and-finish for which the brand has long been known.

The salon is accessed via electric sliders, and my first impression was one of volume, helped by the vessel’s nearly 19-foot beam. Not only did the side windows enhance this effect, but the straight passage to the guest staterooms allowed me to look unhindered from the cockpit to the forward VIP stateroom. Joinery was in walnut, with a choice of satin or high gloss, and the layout was simple, with an L-shaped settee to starboard around a walnut table. A pop-up 50-inch TV was to port.

Viking Yachts 64 Convertible

Forward was the galley, with a raised bar above stone counters, as well as two stools so guests could chat with the chef. To port was a settee (raised 10 inches) around a dining table (with rod stowage underneath) that allowed a panoramic view at rest or while fishing. The chef had enough counter space to handle a hungry crew, and six undercounter fridge drawers for stowage. With tournaments in mind, there was also a freezer under the flybridge sun pad.

While this sport-fishing yacht is just under 64 feet in length overall, it has three en suite staterooms and a crew cabin that could be used by a guest.

The master stateroom is amidships with a queen-size island berth that has an innerspring mattress and walk-around space. Full-height, maple-lined hanging lockers fill the after bulkhead; a locker with bureau shelves is forward; and the en suite head has a 3-foot-wide shower to rinse off the heat of a day spent fishing.

Going forward, the passage hides a full-size washer and dryer and ends at the VIP stateroom forward, also with an innerspring queen berth. This walk-around berth is high (40 inches), and there’s an en suite head that has an oversize (28-by-9-inch) shower. A hanging locker and four drawers under the berth handle guest clothing. An optional layout splits the berth space in this stateroom, so you get a double berth and a bunk for extra crew.

Viking Yachts 64 Convertible

Two more sleeping spaces are to port off the passage: a guest stateroom with twin berths, and a crew cabin with two bunks. The guest stateroom has the third en suite head with a shower. It serves as a day head and is used by the crew cabin. The crew spaces have the same fit-and-finish as the guest spaces.

The flybridge is reached via teak steps and reflects current Viking design thinking, with a streamlined console. A trio of Release ladder-back pedestal seats are abaft the black acrylic dash, with a trio of monitors and Bocatech switching. A drop-down overhead box has more electronics.

Three things stood out to me on the 64C’s bridge: the syrupy-smooth wood of the Palm Beach-style steering pod, with single-lever throttles on each side that make for easy control when facing aft; great visibility thanks to the lack of a Venturi windscreen forward; and hidden “glove boxes” with folding lids that conceal VHF radios and mics.

The fiberglass hardtop has a fold-down hatch to access the teaser reels, and the space is partially enclosed with hard side curtains. In each corner of the bridge are thoughtful amenities, including a sink and fridge. Molded into the helm console is a stretch-out lounge with armrests and a freezer underneath.

Viking also offers the 64C with an enclosed bridge, which moves the helm forward and creates an aerie with salon seating, stairs from the interior and a docking station on the aft deck.

Viking Yachts 64 Convertible

Down below and aft, the engine room is accessed via a hatch in the cockpit, with a ladder providing access to all the systems, including a 21 kW Onan genset. There is 6-foot headroom and space between and abaft the diesels for service. Owners and service techs should have no problem with daily checks or repairs. Viking finishes the 64C’s bilge in snow-white Awlgrip, a durable urethane. Batteries are in custom fiberglass storage boxes, and a pair of battery chargers should keep them topped off.

The Seakeeper 26 is accessed through a lazarette hatch, which also leads to the pumps, steering and tabs.

A variety of power options including MAN, Caterpillar and MTU are available. The base package is a pair of 1,550 hp MAN V-12 diesels, and the options go up to twin 2,022 hp MTU M96X V-12 diesels.

The 64C I got aboard had the bigger motors, which topped the yacht out at 42 knots. Pushing down the two single-lever throttles resulted in a satisfying surge to full plane without requiring tabs to prevent bow rise. Viking Capt. Sean Dooley said he had recently brought the 64C back from a tournament in the Florida Keys, running at 80 percent power (2,100 rpm) and 36 knots. The boat consumed 152 gph, giving it a range (with a safety margin) of more than 380 nautical miles.

All Viking yachts benefit from the lessons learned with previous builds, and the 64C is no different. Some of the 64C’s hull refinements include modifying the chine angle from the 12-degree transom deadrise, softening the radius of the chine itself, and rearranging the strakes forward to further reduce spray. The results are faster planing, higher speed and better efficiency.

Once again, Viking has raised the bar not just on its own products but also on sport-fishers in general. Impeccably built, thoughtfully outfitted for fishing and with performance to satisfy, the Viking Yachts 64C is built by anglers and for anglers.

One Tough Beauty

The Viking 64C has a vinylester-resin hull that is vacuum-infused and should prevent blisters. Bulkheads and fuel tanks are resin-infused too, and the hull-to-deck joint is through-bolted every 3 inches. The mold work is impeccable, with the topsides and cabin unmarred by ripples. High-level Viking craftsmanship is evident everywhere, including in the finely mitered joints in the after corners. And, the 64C is the first Viking with matched grain woodwork throughout the salon and staterooms. Making this feature look right requires precise joinery techniques.

Towering View

The tuna tower on the 64C, made by Viking-owned Palm Beach Towers, is a 10-foot gap tower with 43-foot triple-spreader outriggers. It has a centerline helm with a Furuno color scanning sonar, a seat and a padded rail for three people.

Stick Stowage

Every angler has a multitude of rods for various angling activities. The 64C provides stowage for a full quiver in a pullout drawer under the dinette, as well as inside lockers in the cockpit, which hold tag sticks and gaffs.

Viking 92 Yacht: Everything You Want To Know

Ian Fortey

The Viking 92 yacht was launched by Viking in 2014 and came with three different models. There was an enclosed bridge, a convertible and a skybridge model available, each with very similar features and specs overall, with the obvious difference being in the deck layout and design.

The yacht is a powerful and sleek sport fishing boat with a lot of great features. At 93 feet it’s a formidable vessel as well that really dominates on the water and cuts an amazing profile with that huge elevated deck that lets you see and be seen from all angles.

How Much Does a 92 Viking Cost?

viking yacht range

You can expect to pay around $10 million for a Viking 92 yacht but there is some wiggle room there. The model was produced over several years to older versions that have been around for a spell will likely not be as expensive. And, as with any vessel, what features you want included can offer a difference in pricing.

For instance, just as 2022 was coming to a close you could pick up a 2017 Viking 92 enclosed bridge on Yacht World for $9,950,000. A 2020 Skybridge Viking 92 would set you back $11,950,000.

viking yacht range

Overall condition of the boat and whether it was an enclosed bridge or a skybridge are big factors that can change the overall cost by a million dollars or more. One of the biggest factors that can affect cost is the engine and there are always choices depending on how powerful you want your boat to be.

At 92 feet this is a large boat and a crew would also likely be necessary to keep it running. Along with the crew, fuel costs would be in the tens of thousands of dollars per year. Depending on how often you were likely to take the boat out, yearly costs to maintain the Viking 92 could easily top $500,000. That said, if you have reliable friends or family to serve as the actual crew, you’d be saving yourself some cash but that’s probably not what most people with $10 million yachts are doing.

What are the Viking 92 Specs

viking yacht range

Though the specs for some older models that date back to 2014 are slightly different in terms of fuel capacity, in general these are the specs for the more recent Viking 92 models. Older ones seemed to have a slightly lower fuel capacity though it’s likely they just upgraded engines at some point.

  • Length Overall – 93 ft. 3 in (28.42 m) making it a larger yacht
  • Beam – 24 ft. 1 in. (7.34 m)
  • Draft – 5 ft. 11 in. (1.80 m)
  • Standard Engines (additional option available which could significantly alter the price) – CAT / C32A 1925 1925 MHP Base with MTU Series 2000 / V 16 M96L 2635 MHP Option
  • Fuel Capacity – 4,015 gals. (15,198 l)
  • Gross Weight – 205,000 lbs. (92,986 kg)
  • Water Capacity – 485 gals. (1,836 liters)
  • Cockpit Area – 238 sq. ft. (22.10 sq. m)

What’s the Viking 92 Interior Like?

viking yacht range

The interior of the Viking 92 is a real step up from what a lot of fishing boats can offer. But hey, for $10 million what do you expect? The sheer amount of space available is what’s stunning and it has a real vibe of almost being a hotel on the water which is very cool. If you’ve never tried fishing from a boat that cracks 90 feet, the difference is something else. Most of us are probably used to the smaller fishing boats , hell I used to fish on a 12 foot jon boat , so the Viking 92 is the difference between Salisbury steak and filet mignon. This walkthrough gives you a great look at the Viking 92 both inside and out.

The interior of these boats definitely took them above and beyond your typical fishing boat to something a little more luxurious. Some notable features of the interior include:

  • The yacht features five staterooms. Each room has its own private head and a shower.
  • Aft full beam crew quarters with a galley and a head with shower. These quarters have access to the cockpit and feature upper and lower berths
  • The full beam master suite features hotel-like amenities. It’s furnished with a king size bed, a wardrobe, a table, and an extensive head. It even has a walk-in closet.
  • An outside galley and grilling area
  • Propulsion choices include offerings by Caterpillar and MTU
  • A two-level mezzanine and 238-square-foot tournament-ready cockpit with fighting chair
  • The mezzanine offers both rear facing lounge seating, along with a second seating area and a table for al fresco dining.

What is the 92 Viking Fuel Capacity and Range?

viking yacht range

The Viking 92 has a fuel capacity of 4,015 gallons. This gives the vessel a range of around 1,500 nautical miles based on feedback I’ve seen from previous owners. When you’re out specifically for fishing it’s a decent range to get you where you need to go. These vessels were often used not just for sport fishing but for tournament fishing as well.

What’s the Viking 92 Top Speed?

viking yacht range

The Viking 92, despite its size, can hit some good speeds. Cruising speed is about 30 knots while she tops out at an impressive 37 knots. This is in part due to how the hull has been designed and shaped as well as some other drag reduction innovations that can help it move more smoothly.

With the MTU Series 2000 / V16 M96L diesel engines, the 92 Viking can hit speeds of 35 knots and reach a cruise speed of 31 knots.

What are Some Other Features of the Viking 92?

viking yacht range

Owners can add a 43-foot tuna tower. These towers are lightweight but tough and can be tailored to an individual boater’s needs then attached to the yacht without compromising balance, access or practicality.

The enclosed deck features a massive flybridge with room for sofas, cabinets and storage, a wet bar and more. The helm features three Stidd helm chairs and a console with VIPER steering, all your instrumentation and bow thruster controls. At the rear of the bridge is an open aft-deck with a set of aft-helm controls and a three-seater sofa.

viking yacht range

The option is there for open or closed bridge depending on your likes, as well as custom choices like two-tier cockpit mezzanine or upper seating in the rear. A salon to the front takes up the entire width of the boat and features things like:

  • A U-shaped settee situated to port
  • A large cocktail table
  • Two upholstered chairs set to starboard
  • A 65-inch flat screen TV emerges from the walnut teak cabinetry
  • A galley surrounded by the L-shaped granite counter and complete with appliances, stainless steel countertops and a backsplash.
  • Four bar stools are placed at the bar.
  • A laundry center for use by passengers and a second laundry center for crew use
  • A formal dining area accommodates 6 to 8 people and is found across from the bar with a quartz-topped table that can seat up to 6 people
  • Built-in refrigeration and freezer space
  • Large and ample storage
  • Insulated fish wells below the main cockpit sole.
  • Rod and electronic stowage near the helm station
  • A reinforced entertainment area with another large 50-inch television

viking yacht range

Options for a Viking 92 could cover an immense range of things from extended warranty cover to things like:

  • Seakeeper SK 35
  • Furuno Omni Sonar
  • LED backlit Lumix white Quartzite countertops
  • MTU Dynamic Positioning with joystick control
  • 2nd anchor windlass system
  • Viking skybridge with Palm Beach Towers hard top
  • Atlantic Marine Electronics
  • Extra fuel capacity- (4) tanks total

Does Viking Still Make the 92?

viking yacht range

In 2022 Viking retired the 92 model and replaced it with the Viking 90. The reason for this is because of an international emissions mandate from the IMO or International Maritime Organization. This dates back to 2015 and, in order to align with that mandate, Viking has gone back to the drawing board to redesign a yacht that meets these IMO Tier III standards. The aim of this mandate is to reduce nitrogen-oxide emissions 70% more than the Tier II standard for all vessels with a load-line length greater than 78 feet. Tier III targets the gasses that contribute to smog and acid rain, deplete the planet’s ozone layer, and aggravate asthma in humans. All yachts that fall under this category must install Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems in engine rooms that scrub emissions using urea.

The new Viking 90 luxury cruising yacht is very comparable to the 92 and costs about $11.6 million brand new. Again, various options and add on can great change this overall price.

The Bottom Line

The Viking 92 was released in 2014 and typically averages around $10 million. Available as an enclosed bridge, a convertible or a skybridge, this luxury sport fishing yacht offered some amazing features and amenities as well as great performance. From a majestic living room to walk in pantries, private facilities, numerous standard and optional accessories, Viking yachts really set the standard for what a sport fishing motor yacht could offer.

Due to changes in emissions standards, Viking stopped production of the 92 in 2022 and has replaced it with a slightly altered model known as the Viking 90.

Can someone tell me what the square footage of the interior of a ‘92 is? If not the 92’ then the 90’ will do. It will be a game changer for the wife. We are thinking of purchasing one instead of a new summer home. If it doesn’t have the sq. footage she won’t go for it. And, if she doesn’t, I will have to settle for a day fisherman.

There are several things to consider when asking the question: “How far can a yacht journey?”

There are many different variables, including the type of yacht, the size of the fuel tank(s), the weather, and the amount of crew/gear aboard.

Not to mention the skill and experience of the captain.

How Far Can A Yacht Travel?

Generally, a motorized yacht about 35 feet in length can travel around 200 miles at approximately 25 knots in an 8 hour day.  At 35 knots, they can travel close to 300 miles in a day.  With enough fuel or fill-ups, you can go on for thousands of miles.

With the addition of sails, a yacht can travel even further, but it takes longer.

Here’s everything you need to know!

How Far Does the Average Yacht Travel?

This question is difficult to answer on its own.

However, on average, a 75-foot motorized yacht with a tank that can carry 11,000 liters of fuel can travel up to 1500 nautical miles.

If you are comparing your yacht to this average, make sure also to compare your tank size.

For example:

  • A 95-foot yacht with a 9000-liter fuel tank can travel up to 1,200 nautical miles.
  • A 40-foot yacht with a 5,000-liter fuel tank can travel up to 3,000 nautical miles.

Think of it this way: the bigger the boat, the bigger the fuel compartment.

The bigger the fuel tank (for the size of the boat,) the farther it can travel.

Other variables can affect those numbers, but these are the main factors you need to consider.

We have an article here with much more statistics and numbers on boating .

How Big is the Fuel Tank on a Yacht?

Different yachts have different-sized gas tanks on board.

The size of the fuel tank has a lot to do with how far it can travel.

After all, no fuel = no travel, right?

Not necessarily.

For a motorized yacht, there are really only two things to consider when trying to determine the distance it can travel:

  • The amount of fuel you have (or how big the tank is)
  • How much of it is burned by the engines (which is affected by different factors)

Side note: generally speaking, it is a good idea to have about one and a half times the amount of fuel you will need for the trip you want to make.

Different weather conditions can affect how slow your trip is, as well. Yachts are slower in rough weather. If there are bad weather conditions, yachts won’t be able to travel as far. On the opposite side, a yacht can travel much further in optimum weather conditions, when the engines don’t have to fight against the wind and choppy waters.

On the other hand, sailing boats are powered by the winds on the sea.

Weather can be finicky, and, because of that, most sailing yachts have an alternative form of power.

Some of those include:

  • Auxiliary engines, usually diesel-powered
  • Wind generators or solar panels
  • Diesel generators

Remember to read up on international flag rules for boats before leaving.

How Far Can a Yacht Journey with a Full Fuel Tank?

Even superyachts come in different sizes and with different sized fuel tanks.

However, let’s say that you’re on a 130-foot yacht with a fuel tank of 22,420 liters.

If the yacht is cruising at around 20 knots, it can travel about 1500 nautical miles on that fuel tank.

To find how far you can go on one tank of fuel, you will have to:

  • Clean your boat and ensure that everything is working properly (an unmaintained yacht uses more fuel per nautical mile)
  • Refuel your boat and log your engine hours and start/stop times to find your fuel burn rate.
  • Remember, it is important to measure your liters or gallons per hour of use instead of only using your fuel gauge (which might not be accurate over the full scale).
The fuel burn rate calculation is = fuel used / hours, resulting in liters or gallons per hour. The calculation for fuel efficiency is distance/fuel used, resulting in miles per gallon or liters.

The fuel burn rate and fuel efficiency (fuel mileage) are different at different speeds.  If both are calculated at the vessel’s standard cruising speed, the fuel efficiency is the cruising speed divided by the fuel burn rate.

For example, a yacht cruising at 10 knots burning 2.5 gallons per hour has a fuel efficiency of 4 nautical miles per gallon (10 / 2.5).

How Many Days Can you Sail For?

Depending on the vessel, you can sail anywhere from one day (on a small sailing yacht ) to a month, and some boats have sailed around the world without stopping.

You must account for:

  • The number of people on your crew,
  • what supplies you have on board,
  • if you count for the times you dock for supplies or not, and
  • the seaworthiness of your yacht

A 30-foot sailing yacht can carry enough supplies for someone to stay aboard for 90 days (or even longer).

There is a nonstop ocean sailing yacht race where some of the participants stay on their yachts from 110 to 160 days! Some even sail for 200 days!

You can also apply for jobs on boats to travel that far.

Can a Yacht Cross the Pacific Ocean?

Cruising around the world is a big dream for several yacht enthusiasts.

Being able to leave their day-to-day lives and do an amazing adventure like “boating around the world” is a legacy you can leave with your family.

Generally speaking, it takes about 10 – 12 days to cross the Pacific Ocean on a large yacht.

However, not all yachts are capable of making the trip.

The following summary describes the capabilities of the four yacht design categories used in the EU and UK:

Category D Yachts:

Category D yachts are rated for sheltered coasts and inland boating.

This means you can use them in lakes, protected harbors, and rivers. They would be fine as long as the waves don’t reach 4 feet in height as a rule.

However, these boats wouldn’t be able to make the cross-ocean trip.

Category C Yachts:

Category C yachts are used inshore.

Inshore means that you can go away from the protected harbors for some distance, but these boats still can’t handle waves that reach up to 8 feet in height.

So, while they can move safely around large lakes and bays, they still wouldn’t be able to make the cross-ocean trip.

Category B Yachts:

Category B yachts are used offshore and can handle waves that reach up to 13 feet in height and strong winds.

However, you still wouldn’t want to take a category B yacht on the cross-ocean trip because it isn’t self-sustaining.

At least, not for the time it takes to cross the Pacific Ocean. Besides, it wouldn’t do well in rough weather.

Category A Yachts:

Category A yachts can handle waves up to 23 feet in height and wind over 47 knots.

They are also designed to be self-sustainable for long voyages.

In other words, they are explorer’s vessels.

Can a Yacht Cross the Atlantic Ocean?

viking yacht range

To cross the Atlantic, an average motorized yacht would need a tank with a capacity of about 5000 liters of fuel at a fuel efficiency of 2.5 nautical miles per gallon.

This would be for a fuel use rate of 4 gallons per hour at 10 knots cruising speed.  This is at cruising speed, of course. hey can’t be traveling at maximum speed for long periods of time (which would burn through the fuel faster).

At 10 knots, the trip (about 3,000 miles) would take 300 hours or 12.5 days.

Sailing yachts travel the Atlantic every year since the only fuel they need is for generators that power onboard appliances.

Though, some fuel may be used to power the boat when the weather isn’t cooperating.

It takes about 4 – 5 days to cross the Atlantic Ocean on a fast yacht going 25 knots .  However, it would take longer in a sailing yacht (which also depends on the winds).

We have much more info on what you need to know about which yacht types can cross oceans. It’s a must-read if you are considering a trip over the bigger oceans on a yacht.

What is a Long-Range Expedition Yacht?

Long-range expedition yachts are yachts that are self-sustaining.

They are also built with long voyages in mind.

They normally feature:

  • Adequate crew capacities, amenities, and storage
  • Have a long cruising range, meaning large capacity fuel and water tanks
  • Have a robust hull for the long trip

They have to withstand extreme weather conditions since they have to travel across large water bodies. They should be able to withstand the effects of sailing thousands of miles of traveling a year.

They must be easy to maintain and operate. This is due to the distance they must travel. After all, these yachts are often operated by a few laymen boaters (in addition to having a few experienced sailors with them).

Fishing trawlers (designed for many days at sea with cabins) are hearty and can travel the same distance (within range of their fuel tanks) as an expedition yacht but are typically not finished as a yacht.

They also have the appearance of a hearty, military-style craft with tall bows, broken sheers, and vertical or forward raking windshields.

If painted naval gray, they definitely fit the aesthetic of a military-grade vessel. But the reason for all of those features is because both expedition yachts and military vessels move long distances for extended periods of time.

Final Thoughts:

The distance that a yacht can travel depends on the size of the fuel tank(s) and the fuel use rate.

A yacht with a large fuel tank or a sailing yacht (which only requires the wind and carries fuel for onboard generators) can travel much further than a small day cruiser yacht.

If you want to take a long voyage, make sure to take the right precautions first. When crossing either the Pacific or the Atlantic Ocean , you must make sure your boat is a category A yacht (or an expedition yacht). You must also ensure that your crew is experienced in crossing the ocean.

If you are on a yacht, it is never recommended to cross the ocean by yourself. While you may handle a smaller boat in waters closer to the shore, there is quite a bit of difference in a large yacht—especially when you are far from land.

You’ll also have to make sure you upgrade some amenities. Your water maker, power generation system, autopilot, and your freezer, just to name a few, are some of the systems which need to be in peak condition when making that long voyage.

In the end, the differences between having a boat that travels a short distance and a long one are:

  • Made for Distance, and
  • Well-Maintained

Convertible Perfection

(Fall 2017, New Gretna, New Jersey): Viking continues its dominance of the sportfishing yacht industry with the Viking 68, a four-stateroom blue-water convertible with unmatched performance, bulletproof construction, luxury interior accommodations and advanced propulsion and boat-control technologies. The 68 C is designed and engineered to function equally as well as a tournament-ready offshore runner and a cruising yacht with all the conveniences and technology that you’ve come to expect from Viking. The optional Seakeeper gyro stabilizer heightens the level of comfort during both fishing and cruising activities. Anglers do battle in a 176-square foot cockpit, while guests can watch from an air-conditioned observation mezzanine. Running on Viking’s proven hull shape with a 12.1-degree transom deadrise, this beautiful battlewagon delivers a soft ride in rough seas, with a 35-knot cruising speed and a top end approaching 40-plus knots. An aggressively raked stem, gently sloping sheer, swept-back black-masked windshield and flying bridge brow present a powerful yet elegant picture.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Step inside the deckhouse and enter a world of luxury, comfort, convenience and smart storage solutions. The four-stateroom, four-head arrangement is sure to please the most fastidious yachtsman as well as the most particular tournament fishermen. A high-gloss walnut finish decorates the entire interior, and the salon is a blueprint of intelligent form and function, utilizing the wide beam to its maximum potential.

From the electrically operated salon door to the pop-up 49-inch HD TV to the day head with cockpit access to the engineered-stone countertops in the galley, the 68 Convertible flows with luxury conveniences and amenities for comfortable onboard livability.

Frameless windows fill the spacious salon with an abundance of natural lighting. Air conditioning flows from hidden registers behind valances to better distribute cooling air and reduce noise. We’ve placed the electrical panel directly inside the companionway door at eye level for quick access and operation.

Open to the salon, the 68 C’s walk-around island galley maximizes space while serving as a prime socializing area that’s loaded with modern conveniences, including Sub-Zero under- counter refrigeration, and pull-out drawers on aircraft-type slide mechanisms that lock in place for safe keeping. Opposite the galley, a large dinette easily accommodates four adults for dinner and additional bar-stool seating is available at the island galley counter.

With a layout that puts the companionway to port, the starboard master stateroom “is nearly the full beam of the boat, which means you have the space for convenient storage areas such as his-and-her hanging lockers and credenzas,” says David. “This is a convenience that’s a difference-maker, one that owners love.” The master includes a queen-size walkaround bed a maple-lined hanging closet with walnut doors, 32-inch HD TV and ensuite head with separate shower.

The forward stateroom has a walkaround queen size bed that lifts to reveal a cavernous stowage compartment below. The starboard and crew staterooms feature upper and lower berths and each is served with a private head and stall shower. The crew quarters are discretely located, accessed via a separate set of steps off the companionway.

COCKPIT

Observation mezzanine with port aft facing lounge seating with Sunbrella-covered cushions, hinged seats, tackle cabinet with pullout drawers and bait freezer. Standard amenities in the cockpit also include a one-piece anodized aluminum ladder to the bridge, rounded coamings, recessed stainless-steel hardware, a stereo and speakers, a large lazarette hatch, fresh and saltwater washdown systems, a refrigerated chill box in the salon entrance step so you can stay close to the action throughout the day, a walk-through transom door with lift gate, a molded nonslip fiberglass sole with aluminum plate reinforcement for fighting chair placement, flush rod holders, tackle and gaff stowage, in-deck fishwell with a macerator pump discharge and stowage compartments for gear and an available circulating livewell. For dockside versatility, port and starboard Glendinning Cablemaster shore power cords are provided.

FLYBRIDGE

The flying bridge sports a center console helm providing superb visibility to all quarters. Electronic trolling valves allow maximum control on the trolling grounds. Fishing rods stow neatly under port and starboard bench seats, while electronics nest safely beneath a clear acrylic panel on centerline, which keeps them dry in any weather yet always within easy view. Forward of the helm is an additional freezer and bench seat.

While this proven arrangement is a favorite with tournament fishermen, a climate controlled enclosed bridge with a spiral staircase from the salon also is available, a popular plan with cruising yachtsmen. In addition to providing comfort and convenience, the enclosed bridge serves a second salon and private retreat. The forward control station has all the necessary control switches, lighted instrument and engines controls along with VIPER (Viking Independent Programmable Electro-hydraulic Rudder) steering system. A second station is located on the flying bridge overhang for excellent visibility when docking or fishing.

MECHANICALS/ENGINEROOM

The stand-up engineroom features Viking’s leading edge powder-coated web-frame structural-steel engine beds, which are mounted on dedicated transversals for vibration-free, engine and drive train alignment. Standard fuel capacity is 2,060 gallons in Viking-made fiberglass fuel tanks, which are nestled in the hull and fiberglassed into place. The tanks mirror the hull bottom to maximize draw and range and in so doing also contribute to hull strength. If desired, fuel capacity can be increased to 2,423 gallons.

As with all Viking yachts, custom electronic packages and tuna towers can be ordered and professionally installed by our sister companies Atlantic Marine Electronics and Palm Beach Towers respectively for turn-key delivery and utmost satisfaction and performance.
