If a category is chosen but the dice do not match the requirements of the category the player scores 0 in that category.
A Yacht cannot be scored on Full House but can be scored on Four of a Kind, although the fifth dice is not counted in the score. The score for the Straights vary, but 30 is a typical score for each.
The maximum possible score depends on the scoring rules used but with the above rules and both straights counting 30, the maximum score is 297.

How to Play Dice: Yacht / Yatzy Rules of Play
February 14, 2022
In this post, we'll share how to play one of our favorite dice games using 5 dice, which is included in our portable pocket-size Travel Dice design: Yacht (aka Generala, Yatzy, Poker Dice, Cheerio), which is the original public domain version of the game that is packaged by Milton-Bradley as the trademarked Yahtzee®. Yacht can be played with any number of players (2+) and all you need is dice, scoresheets, and a pen. These are the complete rules of play, plus a free printable Yacht scoresheet .
How to Play Yacht
Although it has many names and some variations, this is the basic version of the game that we play, taken from the official source, Hoyle's Rules of Games . There are some slight scoring differences from the trademark Yahtzee® game but we actually enjoy this way more. See more complete rules on the Wikipedia page for Yacht .
Object of the Game
Score the most points after 12 rounds of game play.
Gather a scoresheet for each player and 5 dice. The game consists of 12 rounds, and each player one turn within each round. Each turn consists of up to 3 rolls of the dice. The object of a turn is to designate dice to count in one of the 12 categories shown on the scoresheet (more on that below).
At the beginning of each turn, the player throws all 5 dice. The player sets aside any of the dice they wish to designate to a scoring category, and rolls the rest of the dice again. Same with the second roll. The player may "stay" at any time and is not required to roll all 3 times. After the third roll or "stay", the player must select a category on the scoresheet and enter the chosen score (which may be zero) under their name's column.
No category may be used more than once in the course of the game.
When every player has had 12 turns, the scores on the scoresheet are tallied and the highest score wins.
The scoring is as follows, with a maximum achievable score:

Yacht dice game is predecessor of Yahtzee and is contemporary of another sequence dice-casting game Crag . Yacht is in public domain and similar to games such as Poker Dice , Yatzy etc.
The objective of the game is to score points by rolling 5 six-sided dice and making certain combinations.
5 six-sided dice and a scoresheet.
Yacht Dice Game Play :
In each round all players take turn to roll 5 dice up to a maximum of 3 times. After each roll player can set aside one or more dice and then roll remaining dice. Dice which were set aside in initial rolls can be rolled again in later rolls. The game has 12 categories to score. Each category belongs to a unique combination and can be scored only once. There is no sequence in which a category is to be scored.
Following are the categories available in Yacht dice game, its scoring rules and description
Player can choose a category to play even if he/she scores zero in it according to the scoring rules. Sometimes it is more beneficial to score in low scoring categories such as ones or twos and try high scoring categories again in later turns if it is not achieved.
Some combinations can be played in multiple categories. For example, if all five dice are showing same number, it can be scored in Four of a kind, or Full house, or Yacht.
Once all categories are played, the player with highest points wins.

If you are looking for a game requiring little skill and a good deal of luck, then this may be the game for you. Yacht is a very simple game which uses nothing more than 5 dice, a cup to shake them in, and a score sheet. Despite its simplicity, the “high” of getting spectacular rolls of the dice is palpable. The skill of the game comes entirely in the form of decision making. The decisions one must make involve taking calculated risks, and knowing how to score your rolls.
Number of Players
As few as 2 and as many as you like.
5 six-sided dice (with optional dice cup), 1 specially prepared score sheet per player.
Download a score sheet. (If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader, download it for free here .)
Each player rolls to determine who plays first (high roll wins), and play proceeds to the left. A player starts their turn by first rolling all 5 dice. They are allowed up to 2 more rolls (for a maximum of 3 rolls per turn). Each time a player rolls, they may choose to hold (or set aside) as many of the dice as they wish, and re-roll the remaining dice in an attempt to achieve certain goals as outlined by the score sheet. At any time during a players turn, they may stop rolling and use what is showing on all 5 dice to fill in a spot on their score sheet.
Once a spot has been filled in on the score sheet, it can not be changed.
Score Sheet
Each player has their own individual sheet prepared with a series of categories divided into two sections (an “upper” and a “lower”). Each category represents a specific combination of dice, and should have a space next to it to fill in the score for that category. The categories are:
Upper Section
Upper Section Bonus (35 pts. If upper section total = 63 or higher)
Lower Section
3 of a kind (total of all 5 dice)
4 of a kind (total of all 5 dice)
Full house (25 points)
Small straight (30 points)
Large straight (40 points)
Yacht (50 pts.)
Chance (total of all 5 dice)
Bonus for additional Yachts (100 pts. per additional Yacht)
There should also be room at the bottom of the sheet to fill in the totals for both sections and add them together for a final total. At the end of a players turn, the player MUST write down a score next to one of the categories. The player may choose to fill in any category that has not been previously filled in (in either section), but their final combination of dice must meet the requirements for whatever category they select (other wise, they must fill in a 0 for that category).
For the upper section, each category simply represents the specific numbers rolled on the dice. To take a score in the upper section, merely write down the total of all numbers you rolled that correspond to the specific category. For example, if you roll three 1s, a 2, and a 4, you may total the 1s for a score of “3” in the 1s category (for the sake of argument, you could also take a score of “2” in 2s, or “9” in Three of a Kind, etc). The upper section bonus of 35 points is achieved if the combined total of all numbers scored in the upper section equal 63 points or more. A good thing to keep in mind when trying for this bonus is that scoring exactly 3 of each number (i.e. three 1s, three 2s, etc.), gives you exactly 63 points.
For the lower section, the roll requirements are more specific. For 3 of a kind, and 4 of a kind you must obviously have either 3 of one number or 4 of one number showing on the dice. If you have met this requirement, you may total ALL numbers on the dice and write the total in the appropriate category. For “chance,” there is no specific requirement to meet; you merely total all the dice. All other lower section categories have specific point values assigned to them. You may write down the point value for each of these categories upon achieving their roll requirements. Those requirements are:
Full house – dice show 3 of one number and 2 of another number (25 points)
Small straight – 4 of the 5 dice are in sequence (example: 1, 3, 4, 5, 6). (30 points)
Large straight – all 5 dice are in sequence (example: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5). (40 points)
Yacht – all 5 dice show the same number (50 points)
You will notice while playing, that certain rolls can be taken in a variety of categories (for example a roll of 4, 4, 4, 6, 6, can be scored as 4’s, 6’s, 3 of a kind, Full house, or Chance…or, you can take a “0” anywhere else). In these situations, it is up to you to decide where to write down a score. In the event that your final roll of the dice on your turn produces a roll that does not meet ANY requirements on the score sheet, then a score of “0” must be taken in the open category of your choosing.
Bonus Yachts
If you have already filled in the yacht category (with either 50 points or zero), and you roll a yacht…that yacht may be used as a “wildcard” anywhere else on the sheet (for example: it may be used as a full house, small straight, etc.). Also, if you have already scored 50 points in the yacht category, each additional yacht rolled is worth a bonus of 100 points (in addition to whatever the subsequent yachts are scored as).
When every category on every player’s score sheet has been filled in, the game is over. Each player then totals all of the values from each and every category on the sheet (remembering to include any bonuses). The player with the highest total score is the winner.
Yacht is probably better known by its commercial name, Yahtzee. It is easy to play at home with just five dice and a score sheet. (Click here to open a new window with a printable score sheet.) Together with General , Yacht is known as a 'category' dice game.

1. Players throw one die, with the lowest score going first. Each player has twelve rounds to make the highest overall score. There are twelve categories, one per round, in any order. Players try to maximise their score in nine categories and achieve the other three categories by throwing five dice up to three times per round.

2. Player One throws all five dice. If the dice make a Yacht, a Straight (either big or little) or a Full House, that score can be entered immediately on the score sheet. Otherwise, Player One must decide which dice to keep and which dice to throw again to try to get a good score in any category. For example, if Player One threw '6', '3', '3', '2' and '3', they may decide to try for Four of a Kind by keeping the '3s' and throwing the '6' and '2' again. If the second throw was a '3' a '1', Player One would keep the '3' (to make Four of a Kind) but could throw the '1' again with the hope of achieving five '3s' (a Yacht). At the end of the third throw, Player One must decide which category they will enter their score. If they had five '3s', they could enter it as a Yacht (50 points), Four of a Kind (4x3=12 points), Threes (5x3=15 points) or Choice (3+3+3+3+3=15 points). A Yacht would give them the highest score (and is the hardest to achieve) so it is the obvious choice.
3. Players proceed in a clockwise direction to throw the dice (up to three times per round) in order to achieve their best score in each category over the twelve rounds. Players can only enter a score in each category once, even if they throw a better score for that category later on in the game. This means that some categories may score zero if, for example, you have throw three '5s' and are trying for Four of a Kind. If you end up with '5', '5', '5', '3' and '6', and you already have scores for Threes, Fives and Sixes, you may need to put that round as zero for Ones so that you can still hope for a higher score in other categories in later rounds.
5. Players add up their total score at the end of the twelfth round. The highest score wins the game. (The best possible score is 297 points.)

Yacht has a strong basis in math, mainly: Counting, addition, and multiplication, and sometimes, depending on how you tally the dice, subtraction.
Mental math skills are used to quickly total up the dice thrown.
Writing Skills: Players need to keep track of their score by writing them down on the score sheet, which is a chart.
It is naturally a game of: Probability, strategy, problem solving, deductive reasoning, and decision making.
Young children, people with special needs, and older people can build dexterity by picking up the dice, putting them into a cup, shaking them, and spilling them out. Larger dice can be used as well.
Observation skills and quick thinking are needed to make decisions.

Yacht is a classic dice game, dating back from 1938. The game is the predecessor of Yahtzee and has a lot of similarities to the Latin-American Generala, the Scandinavian Yatzy and the English game of Poker Dice. In this game, you have got 6 dice and the goal is to throw as much special combinations as possible. A turn starts with the first throw. After this throw you can choose which dice you want to lock for your combination, and you can throw the other dice for a second time. From this throw you can again lock some dice and then you can make a final throw. After this throw you can choose which combination you get in the scorecard.
Try to go for the higher combinations first. If you don't have a good combination at the end of your turn, make sure to put it on the lower combinations as they are worth less points.
How to play:
Use you mouse/finger and follow the instructions on the screen.
About the creator:
Yacht was created by Codethislab. They are well known for all their classic games on Poki, like Uno Online, Foosball and Master Checkers.

Yahtzee Dice Game: How do you play? How many dice do you need?
How to Play Yahtzee: How Do You Roll? How Do You Score? What Dice Do You Need?
Brief History
What is Yahtzee?
Yahtzee is a dice game originally made by the E.S. Lowe Company from 1956 to 1973 until Milton Bradly, now a part of the Hasbro Corporation, bought out the E.S. Lowe Company. The game is based off several much earlier games like Poker dice, Yacht, Generala, and the Scandinavian game Yatzy. The game is played by rolling 5 dice and scoring the rolls against a scorecard. The winner of each round is determined by the player with the most points from winning Yahtzee dice combinations. For longer playing, the winner can be selected by total number of rounds won or overall highest point total over several rounds.
How to play Yahtzee:
You have three attempts (in Yahtzee, "rolls") to make a scoring hand. You begin by first rolling all five dice. From there you will select which dice you wish to save and which dice you wish to re-roll.
For example: Roll 5 dice. The roll is 3..2..2..4..6. You decide to try for the 2’s scoring position. Therefore, you lock the 2’s and will re-roll only the 3..4..6.
In deciding what to roll for, you will reference your score card, attempting to fill in each Yahtzee rolls selection space on your card. In a standard round you will only fill out each selection once. Each turn, a set of three rolls, must be followed with the closing of a Yahtzee scoring card space. If you are unable to score points, than you must place a zero in one of the currently open spaces. Turns continue until all spaces have been closed. Yahtzee Scoring:
How many rolls are in Yahtzee?
Each turn can use up to three rolls. You do not need to use all of your Yahtzee rolls to begin scoring. In theory, you could roll as few as 13 times in a round or as many as 39!
How many dice are in Yahtzee?
Typically, five six-sided pipped dice . (the dots are called pips)
What size are Yahtzee dice?
16mm is the standard tabletop size. Some versions of the game use massive dice for outdoor / yard play. For example, this set uses dice that are 3.5” in size!
What is a small straight Yahtzee dice combination?
This is where you have 4 numbers in sequence. Ex. 1..2..3..4
What is a large straight Yahtzee dice combination?
All 5 of your dice in sequence. Ex. 2..3..4..5..6
Do you need to buy the game to play?
Not necessarily. The game can be played with any numbered D6 dice which feature the numbers 1-6. The score can be kept with a pen and paper if you have a good memory for the Yahtzee scoring system. Some players take to photocopying their score sheets. An example of the sheet is seen above. Others buy additional sheets .
How do you roll a Yahtzee every time?
You can’t! Unless you are using loaded dice (dice that roll a specific number each time) you can’t roll a Yahtzee every turn.
What are the odds of rolling a Yahtzee?
According to Thoughtco.com :
“The probability of a Yahtzee in one roll is 0.08 percent, the probability of a Yahtzee in two rolls is 1.23 percent and the probability of a Yahtzee in three rolls is 3.43 percent. Since each of these are mutually exclusive, we add the probabilities together. This means that the probability of obtaining a Yahtzee in a given turn is approximately 4.74 percent. To put this into perspective, since 1/21 is approximately 4.74 percent, by chance alone a player should expect a Yahtzee once every 21 turns. In practice, it may take longer as an initial pair may be discarded to roll for something else, such as a straight .”

How do you roll the dice?
For nostalgia reasons, I have to use a red cup when I play this dice game. That has long been an integral piece of hardware with the game. Sadly, the pack I purchased to write this summary came with this strange black coin purse-esk shaker. [pictured below] It works pretty well, but I miss the red cup! If I had to guess, I would say the shaker is sleeker and more easily packaged. That said, I can also see the shaker being more accessible for some dice rollers as it easily fits in hand and still holding all of the dice.
Back of the Yahtzee Box for reference:
Transparency Notes: The links in this article have one of three destinations: to a listing page on BrycesDice, to a online source, or to an Amazon sales listing. The Amazon links are linked to the BrycesDice affiliate account and bring in commissions to BrycesDice when purchased. BrycesDice is expanding daily, but some items are still out of reach. For that reason these outside links are created. I 100% approve of the game and ensure satisfaction with BrycesDice purchases. I cannot do the same for outside orders.

I would argue that you could put that under Full House, although I have never seen that. The argument is you need a pair and a three of a kind, which 5 2’s would be. That said, if you already have a Yahtzee, and not a ZERO in that column, I would use it for an additional Yahtzee at 100 points.
Katharine-lee Larochelle
Hi we were having a debate, if you rolled all 2s and already have a Yahtzee… could that be considered a full house? Or do the set of three and set of two have to be different numbers?
Does each player get same number of turns, even if there are more than one Yahtzee?
