Fernando Alonso takes delivery of his electric 60 Sunreef Power Eco

Spanish Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso has said his new 18.3-metre Sunreef Power Eco has given him "exactly the yachting experience [he] was looking for" after taking delivery of the electric model earlier this year. 

The Grand Prix winner said that the yacht has enabled him to travel long distances "in total silence, with no fumes, no vibrations". 

The sale of the solar-powered catamaran was signed in September 2021, with Alonso saying that Polish yard Sunreef was an "easy choice" for him as it offered "technology that could not be found anywhere else". He added: "They combine luxury and sustainability like no other shipyard. When I visited their facility in Poland, I saw first-hand how all the details are taken care of."

The luxury catamaran specialist was also Alonso's first choice for yacht charters in the past, calling chartering Sunreefs a "magical experience" when speaking to BOAT International in a social media livestream .

Sunreef is no stranger to celebrity clients, with Rafael Nadal, Nico Rosberg and adventurer Mike Horn all included in Sunreef’s customer base. But Sunreef has universal appeal, with customers who “aren’t as public”, said Alonso.

Nadal and Rosberg’s endorsement of the brand was a part of Alonso’s decision to purchase, but he said that Sunreef’s commitment to sustainability is what sealed the deal for him.

“I think [Sunreef] is the only company that takes sustainability to a very serious level,” said Alonso during his BOAT International interview. “To have a fully electric catamaran powered by solar panels made perfect sense to me.”

Alongside the model’s eco-credentials, Alonso said the aesthetics of the boat were important. “There are other possibilities of integrating solar panels on a yacht, but it never looks good,” he explained, calling the 60 Sunreef Power Eco a “sexy” boat.

Alonso is drawn to the multihull platform for a number of reasons, including the additional space, increased stability and flexibility that multihulls offer. “You can get closer to the coast compared to a monohull,” he said.

The 60 Sunreef Power which Alonso has selected features electric engines with an ultralight battery bank. The yacht is also designed with an advanced solar panel power system that covers up to 68.6 square metres of the yacht’s surface, allowing up to 13kWp of green energy to be generated.

Interiors on board are finished in sustainable materials and can accommodate up to six guests and four crew.

Alonso added: “On board, all that matters is peace of mind, fresh air, and good company. Yachting should not be about ego. For me, it’s about sharing good moments and being respectful towards the environment.”

“My life goes so fast,” he said in a statement. “I travel a lot around the world. Once on the track, it’s again all about speed. When I enjoy my time off, I want the exact opposite. I want to travel in total silence, with no fumes, no vibrations.”

Currently under construction in Gdansk, Poland, Alonso’s cat will measure 60 feet from tip to tail. Although that’s a good 20 feet shorter than his holiday companion, both vessels feature the same electric motors and futuristic “solar skin.” This is basically an advanced system of solar panels that covers the exterior of each yacht and generates clean, green energy that is then stored in a battery bank. The 80-footer is also fitted with sails that provide extra power.

As for the interior, Alonso’s model will offer enough room for 12 guests and four crew. The contemporary living quarters will be finished in an array of sustainable materials and also feature an energy-saving air-conditioning system. Like all Sunreef cats, it will come with a variety of high-end furnishings.

Alonso isn’t the only sporting great that is a fan of Sunreef. In 2020, tennis superstar Rafael Nadal took delivery of his luxe Sunreef 80 Power Great White , which went on to earn top honors in Robb Report ’s 2021 Best of the Best . Let’s see if his fellow Spaniard’s power cat follows suit.

In September 2021, Fernando Alonso, the two-time Formula 1 world champion, ordered a 60 Sunreef Power ECO, a unique electric motoryacht catamaran built by Sunreef Yachts, the world leader in the semi-custom luxury catamaran market and a pioneer in the eco-friendly yachting market.

He explains today the reasons for his choice on yachting art....

Fernando Alonso's 60 Sunreef Power ECO is the very first 60-foot electric motoryacht from the Polish shipyard based in Gdansk. Equipped with solar panels integrated into the various composite structures of the motoryacht, as well as the lightest batteries in the boating world, Fernando Alonso's yacht will offer optimal energy efficiency for a zero-emission sailing experience. 

Fernando Alonso, Why did you choose to build an electric motoryacht?

Fernando Alonso - The world is moving in this direction. We are more aware and we want more sustainability. In recent years, we have seen major changes in global mobility and, for me, it makes perfect sense to opt for an electric catamaran. This type of vessel allows you to have a closer connection with the sea. The world is going electric and yachts should also follow.

Why did you decide to have your yacht built by Sunreef Yachts?

Fernando Alonso - It was a very easy choice. Sunreef Yachts is known for its high quality and has gained a great reputation over the last two decades. I really wanted to build a catamaran, because I wanted to enjoy more space and all the other advantages that multihulls bring. At the same time, my vision was to build a luxury boat of the highest quality. Sunreef Yachts met all my requirements in terms of space, catamaran expertise, lifestyle and luxury. It was an obvious choice for me.

Could you name the 3 must-have features in your opinion, on board your future yacht?

Fernando Alonso - The first would be a barbecue, which is a must for me. I really enjoy long barbecue evenings with my friends and family, so it is essential for me. I would also like to have a good sound system, as music will be an important element on board. Finally, I will definitely have some water toys on board so that we can enjoy both sunbathing and sports.

What will be your sailing pool?

Fernando Alonso - I will probably be based in Monaco. I will cruise the French Riviera, Corsica and Sardinia. Generally speaking, the south of France and the Mediterranean will be my cruising area.

As an owner, what are your expectations from your yacht?

Fernando Alonso - My 60 Sunreef Power Eco will be my very first yacht! I have nothing specific in mind. I want the yacht to be ready to go at any time. Sometimes I go out to sea spontaneously, so I want to make sure that the yacht is reliable. I want a yacht I can trust. I know that the technology of this electric boat is complex, but I also see the effort that Sunreef Yachts puts into it. I can't hide the fact that I can't wait to spend time on board!

Two-time Formula One World Champion Fernando Alonso commissioned a custom 60 Sunreef Power Eco catamaran with Sunreef Yachts last September. Combining state-of-the-art electric propulsion and avant-gardist green tech, his yacht will be the first Eco edition of the 60 Sunreef Power.

Equipped with the shipyard’s composite-integrated photovoltaic system and the industry’s lightest batteries, the yacht will offer top energy-efficiency for an emission-free yachting experience. Today, Sunreef Yachts meets Fernando Alonso for an exclusive interview in which he reveals his boating plans and shares his vision of a perfect yacht.

1. Why did you choose to build an all-electric yacht? The world is moving in this direction. We are more aware and want more sustainability. We have seen important changes over the last years in global mobility, and to me it makes perfect sense to go for an electric catamaran. This type of vessel gives you a closer bond with the seas. The world is going electric and yachts should also follow.   2. Why did you choose to build your yacht with Sunreef Yachts? It was a very easy choice. Sunreef Yachts is known for high quality and has earned a great reputation over the last two decades. I really wanted to build a catamaran, because I wanted to enjoy more space and all the other advantages that multihulls bring. At the same time, my vision was to build a luxury craft of the highest quality. Sunreef Yachts matched all my requirements in terms of space, catamaran expertise, lifestyle and luxury. It was a no-brainer for me.

3. Name 3 must-haves on your future yacht The first would be a barbecue, which is a must for me. I really enjoy long evening barbecue parties with friends and family, so this is essential to me. I would also like to have a good sound system as music will be an important part of the lifestyle on board. Lastly, I will certainly have some water toys on board so that we can enjoy both relaxation on the sunpads and sports.

  4. Where will you take your yacht? I will be probably based in Monaco. I will cruise in the French Riviera, Corsica and Sardinia. Generally speaking, the south of France and Mediterranean will be my cruising area.

5. What do you expect from a yacht as an owner? This will be my first yacht, so I don’t have anything specific in mind. I want the yacht to always be ready to go. Sometimes I will go out into the sea spontaneously, so I want to make sure the yacht is reliable. I want a yacht that I can trust. I know the technology on this electric yacht is complex but I can also see the amount of effort Sunreef Yachts is putting into this, so I feel very confident. I am looking forward to spending time on board.   6. What is your vision of a perfect day at sea? My perfect day at sea would not start too early. It would be a day off, starting with breakfast on board with friends and family. This would be followed by swimming and some water sports. After lunch, we would all relax, talk and enjoy the sun. Dinner would be a barbecue that we would prepare and cook ourselves and enjoy together.

Gigantesco, de lujo y 100% eléctrico: así es el alucinante catamarán ecológico de Fernando Alonso

Fernando Alonso se pasa media vida subido a uno de los vehículos más rápidos, ruidosos y contaminantes del mundo. Sin embargo, el bicampeón asturiano elige la tranquilidad de un catamarán ecológico de lujo para equilibrar su huella de carbono. Puede que el yate de Alonso no sea tan ostentoso como el superyate de 500 millones de dólares de Jeff Bezos , pero no pasa inadvertido por la alta tecnología que alberga en su interior.

Cuando aprieta el calor y las temperaturas sofocantes de las grandes ciudades se hace insoportable, los millonarios ponen rumbo a aguas más tranquilas y apacibles a bordo de sus yates de lujo . Cada uno a la medida de sus bolsillos.

El 80 Sunreef Power Eco que ha elegido Fernando Alonso no es un superyate al uso. Es cierto que no escatima en todo tipo de lujos y comodidades en su interior, pero lo que lo diferencia del resto es el hecho de ser un catamarán con perspectiva ecológica .

El piloto asturiano se convirtió en imagen del astillero Sunreef Yatchs y, en contrapartida, la naviera le está construyendo un yate ecológico de lujo de 23,8 metros de eslora y una manga (ancho) de 11,5 metros en sus instalaciones de Gdansk en Polonia. El piloto ha elegido el modelo 80 Sunreef Power Eco, aunque mientras se lo construyen, la marca le ha cedido un 60 Sunreef Power Eco, con la misma tecnología, pero con 18,3 metros de eslora.

Alta tecnología para surcar los mares de forma sostenible

Una de las ventajas de tener un yate eléctrico es que su autonomía es ilimitada. Toda la estructura de la nave está cubierta por 200 m2 de paneles solares integrados en los laterales del casco , en la cubierta y en algunas zonas de la cabina. Esto supone la generación de 36 kWp para unos motores eléctricos de última generación alimentados por un conjunto de baterías ultraligeras con las que el armador ha conseguido reducir un 30% su peso.

Tal y como sucede en los coches, los motores eléctricos proporcionan una navegación silenciosa y sin vibraciones. El armador ofrece este yate en dos versiones que obtendrían la etiqueta ECO en cualquier ITV: 100% eléctrico o con motores híbridos .

Los dos motores eléctricos principales pueden ser de 180 o 360 kW, mientras que la opción híbrida necesita añadir dos depósitos de 4.000 o 6.000 litros de combustible. En ambos casos, la autonomía de cada travesía es notable gracias al autoabastecimiento infinito que permite la energía solar.

Además, el catamarán cuenta con el apoyo de turbinas eólicas y sistemas de energía regenerativa que aprovecha el movimiento pasivo de la hélice para recargar las baterías. Algo como el sistema de freno regenerativo del KERS que montan los Fórmula 1 que conduce Fernando Alonso.

La embarcación elegida por Fernando Alonso para sus travesías marinas lleva la sostenibilidad hasta el extremo, no solo en lo relativo a la propulsión. El fondo del casco está pintado con pigmento no tóxico y en la construcción del casco se emplean materiales no contaminantes. Además, a bordo cuenta con su propia estación de purificación de agua, de forma que no se generan residuos adicionales ni se vierten al mar sin tratar.

La eficiencia en los materiales llega a detalles como el uso de titanio en el sistema de aire acondicionado que refresca los camarotes y estancias interiores con el objetivo de hacerlo hasta un 30% más eficiente que con el uso de aluminio habitual.

El yate del piloto asturiano tiene capacidad para 12 huéspedes y una tripulación de cuatro personas. Como no puede ser de otro modo en este tipo de embarcaciones orientadas a clientes de alto poder adquisitivo, se cuida cada detalle en su interior y el lujo es una constante en cada rincón de la embarcación.

El fabricante permite personalizar toda la decoración y distribución de los seis camarotes, cubiertas y terrazas del yate en las que no puede faltar un jacuzzi, televisor de gran pulgada e incluso instalar un piano en su interior.

Como es obvio, todo esto condiciona un precio final del yate. Aunque no se ha revelado el precio final de este ecoyate de lujo, medios especializados calculan que puede oscilar e ntre los 4,95 y los 6 millones de euros .

Yates sostenibles, la nueva tendencia entre los millonarios

Al igual que en el resto de medios de transporte, las embarcaciones están experimentando un proceso de transformación que apunta a un futuro más sostenible y menos dependiente de combustibles fósiles. De la misma forma que se han electrificado los superdeportivos de lujo, la llegada de los motores eléctricos a los yates era previsible .

Fernando Alonso no es el único millonario que ha apostado por invertir en una embarcación de recreo sostenible con el medioambiente . Nombres muy comprometidos con el planeta como Bill Gates también han invertido en superyates que no renuncian a la conciencia de preservación.

El fundador de Microsoft pagó 645 millones de dólares por una fastuosa embarcación fabricada por la naviera holandesa FeadShip con 112 metros de eslora y propulsada por motores de hidrógeno que le proporciona una autonomía de 3.750 millas náuticas, lo suficiente para cubrir una travesía desde las costas de Nueva York a las de Reino Unido.

El superyate de Gates tiene capacidad alojar a los 31 miembros de la tripulación que se encargan de atender las necesidades de los 15 huéspedes a los que no les faltarán las comodidades de un gimnasio a bordo, piscina con cascada, salón de belleza y masajes, etc.

Tampoco se queda atrás el superyate ecológico “A” del oligarca ruso Andrey Melnichenko, que actualmente se posiciona como el hombre más rico de Rusia , un valor aproximado de 233 millones de euros y un sistema de propulsión en el que se combinan motores eléctricos y un sistema de vela tradicional.

El millonario ruso tampoco ha escatimado en equipamiento y a bordo cuenta con espacio para 14 invitados y hasta 37 tripulantes, ocho cubiertas, gimnasio, piscina con spa, un helipuerto e incluso un submarino privado para disfrutar de los fondos marinos.

Non c'è solo l'Aston Martin nei pensieri di Fernando Alonso . Il pilota spagnolo, alla vigilia della sua ventesima stagione in Formula 1, ha deciso di concedersi un regalo molto speciale: un super yacht di lusso e sostenibile . A realizzarlo, l'azienda polacca Sunreef Yachts, specializzata nella costruzione di imbarcazioni a elevata tecnologia e con ridotto impatto ambientale , e legata al mondo del motorsport tramite la sponsorizzazione al team di Extreme E di Nico Rosberg.

A far innamorare Fernando Alonso delle imbarcazioni di lusso di Sunreef Yachts è stato il nuovo 43M Eco , presentato all'International Boat Show di Miami e che il pilota asturiano ha avuto modo di “testare” nelle acque greche di Mykonos. A caratterizzare gli yacht del costruttore polacco, oltre al design moderno e ricercato e alle dotazioni di lusso, è l'elevata attenzione alla sostenibilità e alla riduzione dell'impatto ambientale. Lungo ben 43 metri, il 43M Eco non possiede infatti alcun motore endotermico tradizionale : a muovere lo yacht sono dei propulsori elettrici alimentati da grandi ma leggere batterie da 475 kWh, che vengono costantemente ricaricate da turbine idrauliche, pale eoliche e pannelli solari sparsi su tutta l'imbarcazione.

“I nostri pannelli solari, completamente integrati nelle strutture composite dei nostri yacht, sono una tecnologia che noi stessi abbiamo progettato e brevettato – ha spiegato Nicolas Lapp, CTO di Sunreef - Utilizziamo una gamma completa di funzioni per il risparmio energetico , tra cui un esclusivo sistema di climatizzazione o alcune delle batterie marine più leggere ed efficienti al mondo ” ha detto Lapp.

Il nuovo yacht di Alonso

Dopo aver testato il 43M Eco, Fernando Alonso ha deciso di acquistare da Sunreef Yachts un esemplare del 60 Power Eco, catamarano di 13 metri dotato di ogni comfort e coperto da quasi 70 metri quadrati di pannelli solari . Attualmente, l'imbarcazione è in fase di costruzione presso i cantieri navali di Danzica. Il prezzo non è stato dichiarato, ma siamo nell'ordine di svariati milioni di euro . Non che sia un problema per Fernando Alonso, che nel 2022, al volante della Alpine, è risultato come il terzo pilota più pagato della griglia della F1 ( guarda qui i 19 piloti più pagati della F1 ), con uno stipendio annuale di ben 30 milioni di dollari .

Alonso non è il primo cliente “illustre” dell'azienda polacca: prima di lui a comprare un Sunreef 80 è stato la leggenda del tennis Rafael Nadal , mentre Nico Rosberg è anche ambasciatore dell'azienda , che tra l'altro sponsorizza il suo team nel campionato elettrico Extreme E.

Il catamarano di Fernando Alonso, di lusso e sostenibile

Motori elettrici e pannelli solari caratterizzano il 60 Sunreef Power Eco del due volte campione del mondo di Formula 1

Quale può essere la barca ideale per un pilota di Formula 1 ? Uno yacht sportivo e velocissimo, verrebbe da replicare. Invece la risposta non è così scontata: un bell’esempio viene da Fernando Alonso che, al posto di sfrecciare sull’acqua così come è abituato a fare sull’asfalto con le monoposto, ha scelto di navigare in modo tranquillo e consapevole a bordo del 60 Sunreef Power Eco , catamarano progettato in un’ottica green . Il pilota spagnolo di maggior successo ha commissionato ai cantieri polacchi Sunreef Yachts (scelti anche da Rafael Nadal per la sua barca) un catamarano di 18 metri con pannelli solari , che si estendono per 68,6 m² di superficie a bordo, e motori elettrici all'avanguardia alimentati dal banco batterie ultraleggero dedicato, per una navigazione silenziosa e senza vibrazioni.

“La mia vita va così veloce. Viaggio molto in giro per il mondo. Una volta in pista, è di nuovo tutta una questione di velocità. Quando mi godo il mio tempo libero, voglio l'esatto contrario. Voglio viaggiare in totale silenzio, senza emissioni, senza vibrazioni”, afferma Fernando Alonso. I pannelli solari del 60 Sunreef Power sono completamente integrati ai lati dello scafo, nella sovrastruttura e in alcune aree curve dello yacht, diventando così elementi estetici, oltre che funzionali, che vanno a connotare l’exterior design . Lo yacht di Alonso è dotato, inoltre, di generatori eolici e materiali di finitura eco-responsabili, per offrire un'esperienza di crociera sostenibile a 360° .

Il catamarano di lusso scelto da Magic Alonso può ospitare fino a un massimo di 12 persone a bordo, oltre a quattro membri dell’equipaggio. Le sei cabine sono poste nei due scafi, il ponte principale – che nei catamarani è davvero ampio – ospita living, dining e cucina. Quest’ambiente è circondato da suggestive vetrate panoramiche che permettono di far filtrare una grande quantità di luce naturale, oltre a garantire un contatto diretto con l’ambiente naturale circostante. La barca, inoltre, ha anche diverse aree all’aperto a prua, a poppa e sul ponte superiore, che consentono di apprezzare davvero ogni momento della navigazione.

In attesa della consegna della sua imbarcazione custom sostenibile , attualmente in costruzione a Danzica, in Polonia, Fernando Alonso ha testato altri modelli della gamma dei catamarani ecologici di Sunreef Yachts. Nelle immagini a corredo di questo articolo vediamo, infatti, il pilota di Formula 1 a bordo del catamarano Sunreef 80 Eco , modello di 23,8 metri che ha alla base del progetto gli stessi principi sostenibili. “Sunreef Yachts è stata una scelta facile per me. Combina lusso e sostenibilità come nessun altro cantiere navale. Quando ho visitato la loro struttura in Polonia, ho visto in prima persona come vengono curati tutti i dettagli. Questo è ciò che dovrebbe essere lo yachting ecologico di lusso ” conclude Alonso.

The Sunreef 80 is an all-around luxury sailing catamaran , ideal for exclusive getaways, charter, and transoceanic adventures. With a completely fresh superstructure concept, this electric sailing catamaran gains a saloon plan with an outstanding potential for customization. A vast, central lounging space with a panoramic view and endless layout possibilities, it opens both onto the bow terrace and cockpit. The bow benefits from its cozy lounge that is well shielded from sun and wind.

To the aft, the saloon merges with the generous cockpit which is further extended by a large aft platform for carrying the tender.
