Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta

Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta

16 – 21 april, 2025, back in the 60’s….

Classic yachts in English Harbour had begun chartering and the captains and crews challenged each other to a race down to Guadeloupe at the end of the charter season. From this informal race, Antigua Sailing Week was formed in 1967, and in those days all of the yachts were classic.

Over the next 24 years…

The classic yachts were slowly outnumbered by the faster, sleeker modern racing yachts. A small number of classics still racing in 1987 found themselves grouped with cruising Class 3 which was less than ideal for these hard to manoeuvre full-keeled vessels.

And so it came…

Captains Uli Pruesse and Kenny Coombs hosted a meeting with other classic skippers onboard the magnificent schooner Aschanti of Saba and, several rums later, the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta was born.

America's Cup sailing is around the corner. Did you know it has ties to North Jersey?

4-minute read.

Portrait of David M. Zimmer

The Olympics are over, but the oldest competition in international sports is just around the corner.

The America's Cup sailing event, founded in 1851, returned on Thursday with a preliminary regatta off the coast of Barcelona that sets the stage for a one-on-one final in October.

One of the challengers is a homegrown one: the New York Yacht Club.

Now headquartered deep in the heart of Manhattan, hosting club regattas out of Newport, Rhode Island, and having its racing team training in Pensacola, Florida, the club and America's Cup originator was initially based on the Hudson River. Its first clubhouse was in North Jersey.

Built in Hoboken in 1845, the Gothic cottage first stood by the waterside at Elysian Fields, near the bluff that holds Stevens Institute of Technology. John Cox Stevens, the club's first commodore, donated the land at the foot of 11th Street. His brother, Edwin Augustus Stevens, founded the university. Both were involved with the creation of the first winner of the America's Cup, a yacht named America.

America's Cup's founders

The brothers came from one of the most distinguished families in U.S. history. Their grandfather served in the Continental Congress, and their father, John Stevens, was a Revolutionary War colonel who became a pioneering entrepreneur and an inventor of steam engines and boats.

From their mansion overlooking the Hudson River and Manhattan Island, the colonel and his sons developed the first steam ferry to cross the Hudson. When Robert Fulton secured a monopoly on Hudson River steamship navigation, the Stevens family shifted its focus to other lucrative ventures. In 1809, the family's vessel Phoenix became the first steamer to operate offshore when it began service in Philadelphia.

Five years earlier, in 1804, a 19-year-old John Cox Stevens piloted the first propeller-driven boat. Shortly thereafter, he built a sailing yacht called Diver and raced it against fishing boats and ferries in New York Harbor for wagers. In 1844, he and his friends founded the New York Yacht Club aboard his yacht Gimcrack.

The clubhouse, which was modest compared with the club's current Beaux-Arts landmark in New York City, served as the center of club activities for 23 years, records show. That span covered the development, construction and trials of the yacht America.

America's Cup has North Jersey origins

The yacht America was designed by George Steers, a self-taught innovator of yacht design, to challenge the best in the United Kingdom. Its cotton duck sails were sourced from John Colt's mill in Paterson. When the yacht made it to Britain's Isle of Wight, the Royal Yacht Squadron organized a fleet race on Aug. 22, 1851. The winner received a silver trophy valued at 100 pounds sterling. They called it the Hundred Guinea Cup. It is now known as America's Cup, after the yacht that won it.

Within two months, John Cox Stevens and the syndicate that owned America had sold it and given the trophy to the club. The cup came with conditions. According to its formal Deed of Gift, it must serve as an everlasting prize for “friendly competition between foreign countries.” The cup's holder must welcome challengers.

The first challenger was the Royal Thames Yacht Club and a yacht called Cambria. The competition held in New York Harbor on Aug. 8, 1870, was won by the New York Yacht Club. The club went on to win every America's Cup match thereafter until 1983.

By then, the clubhouse was long gone. It survived calls for demolition in the early 20th century and in 1904 moved from its home just north of Castle Point in Hoboken to Glen Cove, Long Island, to serve as "Station 10." At a time, there were 11 stations along the club's racing and cruising route where members could land and load.

Vastly different competition

For the second half of the 20th century, the clubhouse was on loan and on display at Mystic Seaport, the maritime museum in Connecticut. Since the start of this century, it has sat on the grounds of the club's racing base Harbour Court, in Newport, Rhode Island. The club's America's Cup yacht, called Patriot, was built and designed in Rhode Island.

A far cry from America, a 101-foot schooner that was used by the U.S. Navy during the Civil War, the 75-foot-long Patriot relies on a pair of hydraulic hydrofoils on either side of the hull to seemingly fly above the ocean's surface at speeds of more than 50 miles per hour. Due to that technology, the modern America's Cup is a vastly different competition from what it was just 20 years ago. Still, at its core, the cup remains an event in which wind-powered vessels must chart an ocean course to victory.

The last cup was a disaster for the New York Yacht Club, which in team American Magic had one of three challengers for the title held by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. That cup's Patriot capsized in the round-robin qualifiers and, after major repairs, finished last in the event.

America's Cup 2024

This year, five challenger teams are taking on the cup holders from New Zealand. They include American Magic and the new Patriot, led by Olympic gold medalists Tom Slingsby, who won for Australia, and Paul Goodison, for Great Britain.

The first look at them in action comes during the final America's Cup preliminary regatta from Aug. 22 to 25. The match racing event will feature four races per day, with the top two yachts, technically classified as AC75s, advancing to a one-race, winner-takes-all final.

The results of the preliminary regatta have no impact on the America’s Cup standings. Still, they were crucial for shaping team strategy.

The New Zealand team, as the cup defender, has a straight path to the America's Cup, held from Oct. 12 to 21. The five defenders, however, must face off in the Challenger Selection Series from Aug. 29 to Oct 7 for the right to compete in the America's Cup best-of-13 match race final.

The races will be streamed free on the event’s website, YouTube and Facebook. Coverage is also available in the U.S. on ESPN+.

Cowes Week 2024: Round-up and Regatta Results

IRC Class 0

Cowes Week 2024 saw some testing conditions and tight competition, here’s a full racing round-up and the overall results…

Cowes week 2024: thrilling solent racing.

On 27th July, the sound of the start sequence from the Royal Yacht Squadron line marked the beginning of Cowes Week 2024 . This historic solent regatta has been running since 1826, but has by no means lost it’s charm or excitement. This year, the sun shone on the Isle of a Wight, a happy change from last year’s antics, and despite occasional race delays and abandonments due to wind conditions, we saw some thrilling and classic solent racing across the board.

Cowes week 2024

Day 1 saw a standout performance from Peter Morton’s TP52 Notorious in IRC Class 0, which triumphed at the line just two seconds ahead of Tony Langley’s Gladiator team (this year’s winners of the Rolex TP52 World Championship – New York Yacht Club). The excitement continued with the Dragon fleet, which enjoyed a tantalisingly close race, with half the class finishing in a 28 second window.

The racing got off to a flying start and, though the wind caused some trouble, this year’s Cowes Week did not disappoint! We were treated to some exciting stadium racing off the beach at cowes, and a particularly dramatic display from IRC Class 0, the fastest boats in the regatta, when maneuvering just a few boat lengths off the shore.

Women’s Day

On the Tuesday, we had Women’s Day at Cowes Week – a day to celebrate the women in sport and the achievements of female sailors. Unfortunately, all classes were abandoned due to high winds, but the inclusive sentiment certainly remained… Marie-Claire Sothcott, in her third year of helming for her family boat ( Unity ) at Cowes, reported on the Victory Class in their 90th anniversary:

“The Victory class is really welcoming and I appreciate Cowes Week noticing females on the water, particularly those who take the helm,” she says. “We’re brave enough and good enough to keep the guys on their toes on the start line. It’s also good to recognise some really talented female crew as well, which the Victory class has in abundance.”

At the end of Women’s Day, the crowds and competitors, along with many other solent boaters, enjoyed a naval spectacle – the remarkable aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth sailing up to cowes for a ceremonial and salute exchange with the Royal Yacht Squadron .

HMS Queen Elizabeth

It was a golden summer’s evening out on the water, and this giant ship’s presence and display was a true highlight of the week.

Following Women’s Day, the Thursday of Cowes Week 2024 was Youth Day, an appreciation for the participation and achievements of hundreds of young sailors competing this week in fleets across the board, including Dragons, J/70s, Cape 31s, Contessa 32s and every IRC class. We saw some tantalising racing from some rising and upcoming stars such as Kai Hockley, the 18 year old student spotted as “a real stand out talent,” according to Sir Ben Ainslie , who has selected him to join his sailing teams’ development programme.

Here’s Ben Ainslie’s Cowes Week podcast with Kai Hockley…

Tight competition at cowes week 2024.

Proper racing conditions returned on the Thursday, and given that two racing days had been lost, the competitors were up against the new challenge of counting all races sailed, as opposed to picking their best scores. This tightened the competition significantly, leaving many separated by just a couple points.

Cowes dinghy sailing

As the competition intensified, the atmosphere ashore was also fuelled with excitement, and competitors embraced the buzzing social side of the regatta, from the legendary red cap Mount Gay Crew Party (Cowes Yacht Haven), to the Cowes Week Regatta Village and live music on the main stage.

The final day of Cowes Week 2024 saw some brilliant tactical racing, and over a week of varied conditions, it certainly ended on on a high.

jumping off boat

It wasn’t all plain sailing this year, but for the competitors, it seemed to make the triumphs all the sweeter… After racing for 24 years, Mark Downer, with his wide Jo and son Alex, finally won this year – he said:

“We have been competing for 24 years and have never even won our class. It feels as though we have been the bridesmaid for so long and now, we finally get to wear white! We’ve been competing in the Redwing for three years starting with third place then second place and now finally first place. It feels absolutely amazing.”

Speaking of the conditions this year, Downer added: “It has been a tricky week and losing two days of sailing was especially hard, but we knew that it was make or break today and we just feel so happy that it’s finally our time. It was pretty tricky out there today especially with the tides. We also had a large container ship coming through the fleet, which made it harder for the fleet as it affected the boats ahead and behind.”

When is the 2024 America’s Cup? How to watch the regattas on TV and stream online

The Louis Vuitton Preliminary Regatta starts on 22 August in Barcelona and the Louis Vuitton Cup (Challenger Selection Series) will follow (29 August-7 October), leading up to the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Match starting on the 12 October 2024 and running for a fortnight.

The holders of the America’s Cup are Emirates Team New Zealand representing the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, but some strong competition is auming to dethrone the team from down under. INEOS Britannia, the ‘Challenger of Record’ from the United Kingdom, are in charge of the Louis Vuitton Cup (Challenger Selection Series) to decide who will race against Emirates Team New Zealand for the trophy.

The unique format of the Cup sees the Defender of the trophy automatically entitled to race in the final Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup Match whereas the Challengers will undertake a series to find the top yacht to take on the New Zealand team. The additional confirmed entries are: Alinghi Red Bull Racing from Switzerland, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli from Italy, American Magic New York Yacht Club from the USA and Orient Express Racing Team from France.

Where to watch the America’s Cup in the US

The America’s Cup action can be followed each day in the United States via ESPN+.

The official website offers sailing fans a full replay every day for free albeit with a 24 hour delay.

37th America’s Cup

How to read the Series Results:

  • Per the CYCS Notice of Series , to qualify for a boat must be a CYOA Member and compete in 5 individual races across 3 events in at least 2 districts. For district awards, a boat must sail in 3 races across 2 events. (Boats that say N/Q have not qualified).
  • New for 2024, the series score for each boat will be the sum of the scores for her best races that satisfy the minimum number required to qualify for the series, calculated as follows: take each of her best high point scores as defined in 7.3 above and divide that by the number of boats in her division that started those same races; then take those scores, with each expressed as a percentage (high point score/N), and multiply their sum by 100.
  • In the case where an Organizing Authority (OA) of an event choose to sail boats from different CRF Divisions against each other or not for race management purposes, where applicable the Corrected Time or Corrected Speed was instead used to rank boats against other boats in their CRF Certificate Division. Therefore, the starting class place earned at an event may differ than the division place for the series. Please note for the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta, the ERR Handicap was removed for a boat's CYCS score.
  • The goal of the Series is to encourage friendly competition and find the best way to fairly compare results transparently. A great amount of time was taken to analyze these results and any questions can be directed to Kate Somers: [email protected]

Luna Rossa racing Team Emirates New Zealand.

But this four-day round-robin, only good for bragging rights, is just the start of the three-month series of yacht-racing. The Louis Vuitton Cup starts Thursday and runs through October 5, when the overall winner faces New Zealand in the 10-day America’s Cup Match, ending on October 21.

If it sounds like a long season, it is. But the America’s Cup has slowly evolved from an often boring, elitist “sport” held offshore in very slow boats, into something of a tech spectacle with fast, foiling, 75-foot monohulls, called AC75s, that all have the same specs, with some modifications allowed. But not much. The idea is to make the event a more level playing field, technically and financially. Previous America’s Cups have favored the wealthiest teams that could afford technical modifications often executed in days to give an edge over competitors.

“New Zealand and Italy look really strong this year, with both strong boats and teams,” Dave Reed, editor-in-chief of Sailing World, tells Robb Report. “But the American team is also a contender. They have a really fast boat and some of the best sailors in the event.”

The US team, American Magic, and Emirates Team New Zealand.

The teams are now projecting competitive scrappiness rather than erudite sophistication, with a racecourse that encourages close encounters at speeds reaching 58 mph. But the dangers are mitigated this year, since there’s an electronic boundary around each boat that dishes out penalties to competitors that wander into their opponents’ territories.

Last week’s series, which pitted one team against another in head-to-head match races, showed flashes of brilliance and many self-inflicted errors, but also how fast and nimble the AC75s are.

The New York Yacht Club’s American Magic team, which took third place overall because of a broken rudder early in the series, beat the New Zealand Defenders soundly on the last day of racing, showing the world it was a serious contender. American Magic’s AC75, called Patriot, outdistanced the Kiwis by more than nearly 700 yards on the final stretch.  “It’s hard not to be happy, but we still got third in the series,” says Terry Hutchinson, skipper and president of American Magic. “You may win a couple of battles but don’t win the war, so you’ve got to keep the bigger picture in mind. That’s what we will do.”

UK Team Ennoy

The pundits seem to be favoring Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli and American Magic as the top contenders of the Defenders, with the Swiss Alinghi Red Bull Racing, with its team of young sailors, the U.K. team INEOS and France’s Orient Express Racing, on the second tier. The Kiwis are generally seen as the Cup favorites, helped by the fact that they won’t be racing any other teams until they meet the Louis Vuitton Cup winner in the America’s Cup finals.

But the dynamics could change over the next few months as the teams become more familiar with their boats and racing conditions in the Med. Beyond a team’s racing prowess, a mechanical failure could end the hopes of any team at a critical juncture. That happened to American Magic in the 2021 Louis Vuitton series.

Team New Zealand wins the initial round robin series.

Last week’s round-robins gave a glimpse of how the next races could unfold as the five Challenger teams compete against each other. For the most part, the boats performed well through the four days, with the final day being particularly challenging, with unstable winds and a confused sea state. Most were worried about boats breaking, something that could’ve been disastrous just days away from the Louis Vuitton Cup. But the teams soldiered on with only minor technical problems, looking forward to what should be a great three months of racing.
