Norris Comer is an award-winning writer and the former Managing Editor of Northwest Yachting magazine. Irwin 65/68 is a 64 ′ 9 ″ / 19.8 m monohull sailboat designed by Ted Irwin and built by Irwin Yachts starting in 1981.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. Review of Irwin 65
Basic specs..
The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.
The boat is equipped with 1817.0 liter fresh water capacity.
The boat equipped with a ketch rig. A ketch rig is generally considered easier to handle, because the sails are smaller, and because it can sail on most points to the wind with one sail completely taken down for repair or while reefing. The Irwin 65 68 is a moderate weight sailboat which is a reasonably good performer. It is not stiff and has an excellent righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a heavy bluewater cruising boat. The fuel capacity is excellent. There is an excellent water supply range.

Hi, Looking for info on the Irwin 65' or 52' from owners in regards to blue-water sailing. I understand that it is not a Hinckley but would like to hear how those 2 models handle the seas. Thanks Phil
At this point, I have talked to a number of owners of these boats. In a general sense they were built quite poorly and intended to big inexpensive boats used for the trade wind charter trade. They reach quite well, but sail poorly at light or heavier end of the wind range. As originally constructed the glass work was dismal, hardware was undersized, electrical and mechanical systems poorly executed, structural elements marginal at best and the connections to bulkheads fragile for a boat this size. As a result, over the years quite a few of these boats have had massive amounts of money poured into them to beef them up, and bring the construction and systems up to a reasonable standard. Once reworked many of the build quality issues can be overcome, but they still offer pretty poor sailing capabilities. Respectfully, Jeff
Wing...I would classify the 52' as a coastal/carribbean cruiser with excellent liveaboard ameneties at a very attractive price. Build quality is modest and with the board she was designed for trade winds in shoal waters...not gales. Problem areas are decks and chainplates and mast step during survey. Get a POST 1982 model if possible. My impression of the 65' is that it is more heavily built and while still modest in terms of fitting out, she may be a better sea boat. Her deck is also foam rather than plywood cored. (Hull is foam cored ABOVE the waterline.) Both were designed with the charter trade in mind and later versions were made with interiors to suit individual owners.
And check out the fixed-grill on the deck!!! CruisingDad will have to upgrade now!

The issues we found were, delaminated bulk heads, severe leaking from cheap fixtures causing a lot of core problems, weak hull to deak joint seam allowing water intrusion.
