Sunseeker Germany sells motor yacht Nachtwind

News in overnight from Cornelius Kistler at Sunseeker Germany that he's sold a 22m 2013 Sunseeker Manhattan 73 motor yacht.

The Manhattan 73 is defined by its ingenious use of space. The vessel enjoys increased volume not just by length but also by courtesy of the broad beam that's carried lower in the hull. This enables a third full-size double stateroom on the lower deck, plus plenty of headroom throughout. The main saloon is now also on one single, sweep-through level, providing a vast entertainment space. Finally, for ultimate manoeuvrability, there's the option of joystick control, dramatically simplifying docking.

The Sunseeker Manhattan 73 was asking £2,310,000 and will be named Nachtwind .

This year saw the full flourish of a trend that’s been growing slowly for several years: the deck-saloon cruiser. Marked by a raised coachroof with windows around three sides for space and light, the deck saloon theme was represented this year by five boats: the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 43 DS, the Northwind 43, the Hunter Helsen Signature 470, the Tayana 48 DS, and the Hans Christian Offshore Explorer 4750. The prize in this category goes to a Sparkman & Stephens-designed boat that shows its offshore intentions in dozens of details: the Northwind 43, built in Barcelona, Spain.

Historical Summary:

Northwind's elegant lines and subtle charm mask a hidden story of intrigue and adventure. She began life originally in the 1930s. The wealthy American industrialist Charles Martin Clark Jnr, spared no expense when he commissioned this beautiful yacht. His Majestys Government gained ownership during the Second World War, where Northwind carried out a vital role in the evacuation of British troops at Dunkirk, and would be often moored outside the Houses of Parliament. After the war, she was sent to promote British export trade. This would take her on a five year round the world cruise. The goodwill tour itself was apparently a major intelligence gathering expedition. Her importance is reflected by those clientele who used her for State and social purposes. The then Prime Minister Winston Churchill and certain members of the British Royal Family, graced her with their presence. Churchill has even been described as painting on the aft deck of the vessel during the post war period, and the then Princess Elizabeth, now Queen, is reported to have dined aboard Northwind whilst in Malta on a number of occasions. During the 1960s, ownership passed to Nomikos, a Greek ship owning family. Northwind again enjoyed hosting the famous names of the era, this time it was the Kennedys, who enjoyed cruising the Greek Islands with the hospitality of one Aristotle Onassis. Prior to its current ownership, a Seattle couple, Camille and Kingston Peters, acquired Northwind at Port d’Antibes, France where they embarked on an adventure of a lifetime. They brought her back to the U.S. for good, enduring all conditions including waves of up to 30 feet. The rich ,the famous and the notorious have all been entertained and appreciated the hospitality on board this most elegant of ships. John Profumo, Christine Keeler, the traitor Roger Hollis and the Sultan of Oman to name but a few. In recognition of her unique history, all of Northwind's privileges lost as a result of being taken out of U.S. registry in 1936,were restored on October 16th 1988, by a Special Act of the United States Congress.

Oranienbaum (Lomonosov)

Still commonly known by its post-war name of Lomonosov, the estate at Oranienbaum is the oldest of the Imperial Palaces around St. Petersburg, and also the only one not to be captured by Nazi forces during the Great Patriotic War. Founded by Prince Menshikov, Peter the Great's closest adviser, the Grand Palace is one of the most opulent examples of Petrine architecture to have survived to the present, although until very recently the palace itself has been greatly neglected. After Menshikov's death, Oranienbaum passed to the state, and was used as a hospice until, in 1743, it was presented by Empress Elizabeth to her nephew, the future Peter III. Peter made Oranienbaum his official summer residence and transformed one corner of the park, ordering the construction of a "Joke" Castle and a small citadel manned by his Holstein guards. This peculiar ensemble, called Petershtadt, was mostly demolished during Pavel's reign. Antonio Rinaldi, the Italian-born architect who also designed the Grand Palace at Gatchina and the Marble Palace in St. Petersburg, was commissioned by Peter in 1758 to build a modest stone palace next to the fortress, and this has survived.

After Peter was deposed, Rinaldi was commissioned by Catherine the Great to build the Chinese Palace, in the Upper Park, as her official country residence. However, Catherine spent little time at Oranienbaum, which she had grown to hate during her marriage to Peter, and by the end of the 18 th century the estate had been turned into a Naval Cadet College. The palace became an Imperial residence again in the reign of Alexander I, and retained that status until the Revolution, when it was immediately opened as a museum. Although never captured by the Germans, Oranienbaum was bombarded during the war and, while the Grand Menshikov Palace survived intact, its restoration was given much lower priority than the more famous estates at Peterhof and Tsarskoe Selo. Today, the small but elegant park has been almost completely restored, while the full restoration of the palaces has finally gained momentum over the last decade.
