For more than 50 years, members of The Atlanta Rhythm Section have entertained audiences all over the world with their hits. The members of Atlanta Rhythm Section originally came together as a session band at Studio One, an Atlanta area studio recording artists like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Al Kooper, Dickey Betts and .38 Special.

The band put out 15 albums and was paired with contemporaries Lynyrd Skynyrd as the successors to the Allman Brothers – carrying the mantle of “Southern Rock” in the late ’70s. However, the band performed songs that were more musically diverse and had hits that had a softer, pop flavor, giving them a sound all their own.

Influenced by music coming out of England and sharing the musical stylings of groups like The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac, the members of ARS were accomplished musicians who constantly tried to evolve. With multiple gold and platinum albums to their credit, the band had two Top 10 singles, “So Into You” and “Imaginary Lover,” as well as Top 40 hits including “Doraville,” “I’m Not Gonna Let It Bother Me Tonight,” “Do It Or Die” and “Spooky.”

Boytek, a singer-songwriter, hit the stage for the first time at the age of 5 at her local county fair talent show. Singing opportunities were few and far between in her hometown of Logan, W.Va., nestled deep in the Appalachian coalfields. She sang at dozens of local charity events, directed her church choir, and eventually attracted the attention of Grand Ole Opry and Bradley’s Barn audio engineer Vic Gabany.

Kesselring hails from the Hocking Hills of Ohio. A professional musician since the age of 15, he has played over 1,000 shows across the country and internationally.

riverboat festival

In 2020, Kesselsring was a finalist at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tenn., placing in the Top 8 out of nearly 300 acts worldwide. He has opened up for Robert Cray, Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, Corey Harris, and many others, and his music has been featured on SiriusXM Radio, in Guitar Player Magazine, on the TV show “Songs at the Center” and in the book Blues on Beale Street.

Chicago Wintrust Magnificent Mile Lights Festival and Parade to return for 33rd year

WLS logo

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The Wintrust Magnificent Mile Lights Festival and Parade will return for the 33rd year Nov. 23.

This year's holiday event will feature a new Chicago River lighting spectacle and the tallest balloon to ever come down the Mag Mile the weekend before Thanksgiving.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

Lights Festival Lane will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Pioneer Court, 401 N. Michigan Ave.

The parade will travel south on North Michigan Avenue from Oak Street to Wacker Drive, then east on Wacker to Upper Columbus Drive from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

As many as one million people and over 600 volunteers are expected to witness the largest evening parade in the U.S., and the third-largest parade in the country.

SEE MORE: Magnificent Mile Lights Festival kicks off

The event is headlined by Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse from The Walt Disney World Resort, leading a parade filled with 40 floats; giant helium balloons; marching bands from Hawaii, Alabama, Illinois and Ohio; celebrities; musical performances; Santa Claus and the Wintrust Fireworks Spectacular.

The festival features the illumination of one million lights on over 200 trees along North Michigan Avenue.

This year, thanks to a grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and Enjoy Illinois, guests can experience several new activities for the first time:

- Brand New Illumination: Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse from Walt Disney World Resort will magically illuminate select blocks along the parade route near the Chicago River with new lighting.

- First Muppet Balloons: Standing at 60-feet-tall, super-colossal Santa Kermit will be the tallest helium balloon ever to parade down The Magnificent Mile, marking the first appearance of a Muppet balloon at the Lights Festival. Animal, Kermit the Frog's loveable friend, will also join the parade line up.

- Updated Lead Float: Walt Disney World Resort's lead float with Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse will have updated lighting and a new holiday look. Plus, Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse will stop more frequently along Wacker Drive to engage the crowd as they light each block.

- New Talent for the Parade: Musical celebrities will perform for fans of all ages on parade floats. Talent will be announced soon.

- Live Music on the Lane: Live music will be featured all day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Lights Festival Lane.

- Enhanced Pyrotechnics: Wintrust's grand finale float with Santa Claus will feature a new holiday look with more height and light plus new special effects.

Attendees should wear holiday sweaters, as the goal is to break the existing world record for the most holiday sweaters at a parade.

‘Beer time’: River Craft Beer Fest returns to Water Street

Petaluma river craft beer festival.

When: Saturday, Sept. 7, 1-5 p.m.

Where: Water Street between the Balshaw Bridge and Washington Street

Cost: General $60, Designated Driver $25

Info and Tickets: For a full list of participating brewers or to purchase tickets online go to PetalumaChamber.com

Something big is brewing down by the river this Saturday, and if you are a fan of hand-crafted, high-octane adult beverages, you probably already have your tickets reserved and a designated driver on call.

Celebrating its 10th year on Sept. 7, the Petaluma River Craft Beer Festival returns to Water Street boasting a record number of 23 beverage makers, nearly a dozen food purveyors and four different bands – one of which includes an award-winning Elvis impersonator.

“Our goal is always to make sure people enjoy themselves, and though the beer is the main attraction, I think this year the music, expanded from one to four acts, will be a big part of that,” said John Burns of Petaluma Valley Rotary , which produces the event in collaboration with the Petaluma Area Chamber of Commerce .

“And the food offerings, another reason people look forward to this every year, have evolved a lot since the beginning,” Burns added, “with many new restaurants in town serving samples of their menu items at the fest. It’s a good way for people to learn about all the great places to dine in Petaluma.”

The increasingly popular open-air shindig debuted in the fall of 2013. If the pandemic had not occurred, this weekend would mark its 12th annual outing. As it stands, subtracting the two years when such events were not happening, the upcoming festival is being celebrated as its 10th anniversary.

According to Rotarian Libby Harvey FitzGerald, who founded the festival, this one is shaping up to be its best yet.

“It gets better, and a little bigger, every year,” she said.

Acknowledging that there were “a lot of dreamers” who brought the annual Beer Fest to life, FitzGerald did come up with the idea, a process she described as “a whole lot of light bulbs going off in a row.”

At the time, she was a member of the Sonoma County Economic Development Board, which had just authorized its staff to research and publish a report called the Sonoma County Craft Beverage Report.

“Based on that report, and what looked to be a rising popularity of craft beers in the area, I went to my Rotary Club to talk about changing our annual Oktoberfest fundraiser into a brewfest,” FitzGerald explained. “Immediately, the club realized that this could be huge.”

With the Petaluma Area Chamber of Commerce joining in as a full partner, the Petaluma River Craft Beer Festival was born. That first year, it was immediately declared a resounding success. According to FitzGerald, local beer aficionados Chris Greuner, Ken Weaver and Fred Abercrombie – who FitzGerald affectionately calls “our three beer guys” – acted as consultants to help shape that initial event.

“At the time, there were no other craft beer festivals in the county,” she said. “Everyone thought the location on Water Street was absolutely perfect. Our three beer guys said it was the best location for a beer festival they’d seen anywhere in the United States – and they’ve been to a lot of beer festivals.”

Over the last 12 years, the craft beer industry has gone through a number of changes. Some breweries have shut their doors, while others have started to branch out into other kinds of products.

“We recognize that tastes shift and change, and we are happy to shift along with them,” said Burns, who now organizes the event, with which he’s been involved since the beginning. (Burns is also a former publisher of the Argus-Courier and an Argus-Courier contributing columnist.)

“For example, a lot of young people are looking for alternatives to beer, and they are always looking for new trends to explore. So this year we’ve included Hive Works Mead, which is a very sweet honey-based wine, and Hoocha Hard Kombucha. We will also have Humboldt Cider Company participating.”

Two Rock Brewing, the brewery associated with The Block, will be serving samples of its hard seltzer as well.

A number of new breweries will be joining the fun this time out, Burns added, naming Original Pattern Brewing and Ghost Town Brewing, who are making their Petaluma debut. They join a long list that includes Crooked Goat Brewing, Old Caz Beer, Moonlight Brewing, CuVer Belgian Brewers, Wolf House Brewing, Drake’s Brewing, Fogbelt Brewing, Mare Island Brewing, Morgan Territory Brewing, Henhouse Brewing, Lagunitas Brewing and many more.

Ticketholders to the fest are given a small, collectible glass, which is filled at whichever vendor’s booth they approach for a sample and a quick chat about what makes that offering special.

“Also this year,” said Burns, ”since we’re all about raising money for a lot of different causes – from river enhancement to helping schoolteachers with mini grants to at least a half a dozen other things – we are selling lanyards to hold your beer glass. So if people want to grab some food, they don’t have to juggle their beer glass and their snack. They can just hang it around their neck.“

Participants are advised, of course, to finish every drop of their last taste – or pour it into a nearby spittoon – before wearing it as a necklace. Money from the sale of those lanyards will add to the fundraising effort.

“We typically raise about 40,000 dollars, between us and the Chamber,” said Burns. “And we’re hoping to do even better this year. But most of all, we just hope people will come out and have fun, and enjoy being together down by the river, celebrating all the great food and drink and music that the North Bay, and beyond, has to offer.”

The festival announced earlier this year that Lin Xudong has been officially appointed as artistic director, overseeing a programming team that includes Naoki Kamiya and Junko Fukatsu for foreign-language films, Wu Jueren for Chinese language films, and Song Jia for shorts. Pingyao has also launched a film fund, Wings International, to support five non-Chinese film projects each year.
