Talk about stunning!

The owners of this great Swanson 36 have decided its time to visit the dark side...so their beloved Swanson 36 has hit the market, and she is certainly one you could easily fall in love with!

First launched in 1984 'Seakeeper' is in excellent condition, she features new covers and clears, a huge entertaining cockpit, princess seats at the stern, and incredible volume for a 37ft yacht. Stepping on board you first notice the clean decks and lines, and plenty of useable deck space.

Internally the head room is fantastic and the owners have her currently set up with a day bed rather than a saloon table, naturally this can be raised if you have extended family for lunch or dinner, but it's all about relaxing on this great yacht, a feeling you instantly get.

A good size galley and huge fridge space, makes long stays on the boat not just possible but a joy, and to stern there is a good sized sea berth and access to the stern for storage.

One of my favorite points on this great yacht are the windows between the cockpit and the saloon, allowing for ample light and air flow.

Some of 'Seakeepers' other excellent features include:

  • Raymarine Chart Plotter and Auto Pilot
  • Epower 2000 Inverter and Charging System
  • Contec 2 KVA Genset
  • Barlow Winches
  • Muir Electric Windlass with cockpit control
  • New Shore Power and Batteries (2019)
  • Near New Island Inflatable with New 5hp Yamaha Outboard (2020)
  • New Life Lines (2019)
  • New stern gland drip less Seal
  • All winches serviced 2020
  • New switchboard
  • New Fridge and Freezer in 2019

If you are looking for a reliable, comfortable and lovingly looked after Swanson 36, then 'Seakeeper' is a must to inspect. For further information or to organise a viewing please contact us today.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Thumbs Up

Hey,does anyone have experience with one? Can't find too much about it. How does it sail. Would one truly consider ocean passages with it. One thing is the side decks looks wide. Making the cabin top look rather slim. I'm going to try and look at one over the weekend but what should I look out for?

NSW, 1536 posts

Assume you have googled Swanson 36 yacht review and found such links as below as well as many others. Yes ocean passages was what it was designed for. The side decks are not wide they are that width for easy traversing forward and aft on deck. The cabin is not slim - you are not going to be standing below out under the side decks of any yacht. Look out for all the normal issues with a 2nd hand yacht. www.sydneymarinebrokerage.com/listing/swanson-36/ www.boatsales.com.au/editorial/details/swanson-yachts-a-buyers-guide-8381/

Earlier ones are generally better as later sold as bare mouldings and finished off by owner builders. Notable ones include Breakaway, Jisuma, Bacardi Even these generally had ply side decks with GRP coach house. Chainplate attachments should be looked at carefully.

that probably will offer comfortable sailing , but looking online I noticed a lot different designs .
The ones I saw seems to have some weaknesses but overall looks like a nice cruiser if it's within your and you like it I don't see why not , if you plan for spent some time and reinforce some areas with stringers .
Not my kind of , but definitely interesting

design (he has a Roberts 36), then you can check out its web page:

From the web page, they seem to get around! Roberts offers a lot of plans and he'd probably be amenable to a quick call if you have questions. His site offers study plans too, so if you buy the boat you could the study plans and get some insight into the design.

Best wishes and fair winds!

The two - (possibly original?)- may not help much with performance under sail either. As noted above and elsewhere, people have managed to take some of these boats on wide-ranging voyages. If this one is well built, maybe it could too.

at the moment. I would buy a Swanson 36 any day but would pass on the Roberts.
The Swanson 36 comes in two versions as well, some shallow and some with the deep keel. I would search out one of the old Hobart racers with my self because I like to sail. The shallow keel version is easier to slip. There were a lot of these built and like all the Swansons only a few were factory fit outs so they can vary a lot. Early versions had bubble cabins later versions long cabins but the cabins can vary. room is short on bubble cabins. Most cases the cabin and is fibreglass and the decks . Some have decks.
This boat is a long cabin version with a shallow keel.

Boat: Swanson 42 & Kelly Peterson 44
it will make very little difference, have a look at the various international handicap numbers to see how little difference a folding or feathering prop makes) then buy a feathering prop. Kiwiprop would be about AU $3k.

Nice boat. Well with a look.

But then go and buy a Swanson because they are even better still. (I may be biased)
