Yacht catches fire at Dubai Marina

No injuries reported; fire brought under control and the cause of the blaze is being investigated

1.599664-4262998238

Dubai: A yacht caught fire near to Dubai Marina at about 4pm on Thursday, confirmed a Civil Defence official.

The fire was brought under control at about 4:49pm, said the official and witnesses in the area.

Major Ali Al Mutawa, Director of the Dubai Civil Defence Operations Room, classified the accident as moderate. No injuries were reported as per initial investigation.

It took firefighters about 12 minutes to reach the area as it was few miles away from the dock and close to Le Méridien Mina Seyahi, he said, while adding that the yacht's engine was on when the fire broke out.

An Asian worker jumped off the privately-owned yacht when the fire broke, said the official. The yacht was gutted in the blaze, he said.

"So far, we don’t know the cause of the fire. It is still being investigated, but it looks like it's coming from the top side of the yacht," he said.

According to Sundeep Ramachandran, a resident at Dubai Marina, thick black smoke surrounded the area.

Yacht on fire at N.J. marina: See the massive blaze

A yacht being refueled at a Wildwood marina on Thursday afternoon was heavily damaged in a blaze witnesses say was caused by an explosion.

The fire broke out on a 40-foot yacht at the Schooner Island Marina, according to on-scene reports. It remains under investigation, first responders said.

An eyewitness said the yacht was refueling at the time the fire started. The McKee Group, a Pennsylvania-based developer that owns the marina, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Billowing clouds of smoke were still visible around 2 p.m. as police and fire officials responded to the incident. According to local police at the scene, New Jersey State Police are handling the investigation.

Schooner Island Marina, where visitors can find restaurants and fishing excursions, was filled with patrons watching from afar Thursday afternoon.

Susquehanna Avenue was blocked off near the marina, detouring traffic around emergency fire trucks and ambulances. Firehoses snaked through the marina’s parking lot, creating an obstacle for bystanders.

The scent of gasoline could be detected throughout the marina.

Paul Daiber, who stores his boat at the marina, was fishing at the end of the deck opposite from where the yacht that caught fire was moored.

In 25 years of keeping his vessel there, this was the first time he’s witnessed a boat explosion.

“It’s scary,” Daiber, 56, said while sitting on a truck hatch about 200 yards from the emergency scene.

Daiber described the explosion as a powerful thud and turned around to see the boat on fire. Debris from the vessel were sent into the air and onto nearby docks, Daiber said.

Meanwhile, bystanders raced to find fire extinguishers. Once firefighters arrived, crews tried dousing the blaze that turned into an inferno that could be seen from across the marina, he said.

Blocks away, beach goers snapped photos of plumes that towered into the sky and were pushed by winds.

“It just progressively got worse and worse until it erupted in flames,” Daiber said.

No further information from officials has been released at this time.

The detoured road was reopened to traffic around 5 p.m. Thursday, Wildwood police said.

Tanker adrift after multiple attacks in Red Sea, UK maritime agency says

By Jana Choukeir and Renee Maltezou

DUBAI (Reuters) -A Greek-flagged tanker was adrift in the Red Sea on Wednesday after repeated attacks that started a fire on the vessel and caused the ship to lose power, the UK maritime agency said.

Iran-aligned Houthi militants have launched attacks on international shipping near Yemen since November in solidarity with Palestinians in the war between Israel and Hamas. Houthi militants, though, have so far not claimed responsibility for Wednesday's attacks.

Passengers on two small boats attacked the Sounion, hitting it with multiple projectiles about 77 nautical miles west of Yemen's port city of Hodeidah on Wednesday morning, the Greek shipping ministry and the UK Maritime Trade Operations said.

There was a brief exchange of small arms fire during the incident, the UKMTO said. In a later update, the UKMTO said the ship reported another attack that caused the fire and led the vessel to lose engine power and its ability to manoeuvre.

There were no reports of injuries among the 25 crew members, made up of two Russians and 23 Filipinos.

Delta Tankers, the ship's operator, confirmed the ship was adrift and had sustained minor damage. The crew were assessing the situation and the ship would proceed on its journey, it said in a statement.

Sounion is the third Delta Tanker-operated ship targeted by the Houthis. The militants earlier this month attacked the Liberia-flagged Delta Atlantica and Delta Blue tanker ships in separate attacks.

Also on Wednesday, the captain of a different cargo ship sailing off the coast of Aden reported a total of five explosions in nearby waters, UKMTO said, later identifying the vessel as the SW North Wind I. The crew and the ship were unharmed in the attacks.

The U.S.-based owner and manager of the Panama-flagged SW North Wind I did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The Houthis' months-long campaign against commercial shipping has continued despite retaliatory strikes by Britain and the United States, which have shot down drones and bombed attack sites in Yemen.

The assaults have forced ship owners to reroute vessels away from the Red Sea and Suez Canal to the longer route around the southern tip of Africa, cascading costs and delays through global supply chains.

The Houthi attacks have sunk two ships and killed at least three crew members. The Houthis have said the attacks will not stop until Israel stops its "aggression" in Gaza.
