Step on board Columbus Yachts' 50m tri-deck superyacht K2 with an "extremely stylish" interior

Careful design has packed speed and comfort into the long, lean aesthetic of the new 50-metre Columbus K2

A couple of trends have influenced yacht design in the past few years – one consists of packing as much volume as possible on to a shorter hull, which results in a tall structure and capacious dimensions; the other takes the opposite direction, keeping the height low and lines long. K2 , a 50-metre tri-deck built at Palumbo Superyachts shipyard in Ancona, Italy, with exterior design by Luca Dini , abides by the second school of thought: long lines, a low profile (generous headroom notwithstanding) and a volume just shy of 500GT.

This figure is important because, beyond that 500GT mark, a yacht becomes subject to a slew of additional certifications under international rules designed for ships. They’re applicable to everything from machinery to construction materials, adding substantial cost and time to the build for features that don’t make sense on a yacht of this size. Striking the right balance is a high-stakes game. “This is a complex recipe, and you have to be careful with the ingredients,” says Gianpaolo Lapenna, COO of Palumbo Superyachts.

A few requirements made it even more complex than usual to achieve that balance on this 50-metre yacht. For instance, the owner chose to include an enclosed garage – rather than open-air, on-deck storage, which would not count in the calculation of gross tonnage – and he wanted a shallow draught, which implied a wider beam, a quick way to boost the volume.

These also had implications in terms of the exterior design, of course, although the owner did not start from a blank sheet of paper. A previous boat served as a point of reference: his Columbus Sport 40-metre, a yacht with a vertical bow, fleeting lines and moderate speed but generous spaces. He liked the attributes of the previous yacht, particularly its “sporty exterior profile, straight bow and large spaces”, says Giampaolo Lo Conte, the owner’s representative, but in time realised some custom-made spaces, such as a full-size gym, would enhance his experience. Together with his team, he started thinking about a larger yacht “in keeping with the concept of the Columbus Sport line”.

They worked out the concept with Palumbo and yacht designer and architect Luca Dini – who has been working closely with the shipyard in recent years on interior as well as exterior design – for a larger yacht with some of the attributes they enjoyed on their previous boat.

“We wanted a contemporary-style yacht with sporty lines that respected some specific design details such as being fast, suitable for shallow waters and extremely comfortable – and, by comfortable, we also meant quiet during navigation,” says Lo Conte. “Another main element on our wish list was a clear distinction of the outdoor areas: on the upper deck, we wanted a Jacuzzi forward and a dining area for 12 in the stern; whereas the main deck had to accommodate a lounge area with a dedicated bar.”

The designer considered all these elements and came up with a suitable envelope for a sub-500GT yacht. The gross tonnage, says Dini, “influenced the whole layout and appearance of the exterior. But I am very pleased to have managed to win this challenge while maintaining harmony and functionality,” he says. “It is a yacht that reflects the personality but also the style and approach to life of its owner: elegant, refined, attentive, demanding, but also a traveller, sporty and open-minded.”

The Florentine designer also developed the layout and the interior design, which no doubt accounts for the cohesiveness of the whole. Working both on the interior and exterior design makes it easier, “to find unexpected solutions and to maximise the fluidity of the environments,” says Dini. “The layout pays particular attention to the fluidity of the spaces, to light, but above all to the liveability of the outdoor spaces.”

This includes a careful study of zones of light and shade, which is best exemplified by the generous overhang of the upper deck that shelters the outdoor lounge/bar on the main deck. This elegant and useful feature proved to be an engineering challenge, says Sergio Cutolo, owner of Hydro Tec . Cutolo was the exterior designer and naval architect on the shipyard’s flagship, the 80-metre Dragon , and the Columbus Sport 40-metre before that. He joined the new project’s team to help sort out the engineering and tonnage calculations of what would become the first of a new line. (The shipyard has sold a second hull, which is under construction at its Ancona facility.)

“The boat is quite complex,” says Cutolo. The owner wanted a draught of no more than 2.2 metres – achieved in part by a beam of just over nine metres and deep tunnels for the propellers – and a top speed of no less than 20 knots. That was an interesting task for the naval architect. “Today I am known as the explorer guy,” he says, “but any time I can go back to fast aluminium boats I am happy.

“Design-wise, we stayed very much on the lines of the 40-metre, but we have a better length-to-beam ratio,” he says. “We designed very sharp hull lines and when you accelerate it takes 20 or 30 seconds to reach the top speed, which is around 21 or 21.5 knots [above the contract speed of 20 knots], depending on the conditions. The bow is very fine and just below the anchor pocket there is a generous riser. The volumes grow immediately about the waterline. This keeps the spray very low.”

Helping to reach the optimal riding attitude and the top speed are interceptors and four fins from Naiad, a configuration that Cutolo, based on his experience with hydrofoil fast ferries, prefers to two large fins. They improve the seakeeping (and comfort at anchor, of course) while being easier to fit within the hull structure. The engines are relatively modest – two MTU 16V2000 M96L engines, developing 1,939kW each, which translates to a 70-litre fuel consumption at 10 knots. At 12 knots, the yacht has a reported range of 3,000 nautical miles.

Lapenna, who describes himself as a technician, is very happy with a top speed that flirts with 22 knots on relatively small engines. It’s too easy, he says, to throw in a lot of power to compensate for a sluggish hull. In the 1930s and 1970s, during periods when fuel was rare and very expensive, naval architecture was the most important discipline in shipbuilding, he points out, adding that some of the best hulls were designed in the 1930s.

One sure way to achieve the speed, of course, is to keep the yacht light-footed. And that was another challenge, knowing the owner’s team did not want to compromise on luxury and comfort. The yacht was built to RINA class for unlimited navigation and complies with MCA rules so it can be chartered. K2 , which is managed for charter by Fraser , entered the charter market as one of only six brand-new yachts (45 to 55 metres long) to be delivered in 2021, according to Daniela De Marco, Fraser’s head of charter management Europe.

Planning in part for her duties in charter, the owner’s team chose sturdy and reliable equipment – for example, a tropical-air-friendly Heinen & Hopman climate system. The yacht’s interior, while very much to the owner’s liking, will also work well for charter clients, in that it is elegant and comfortably modern. “Her interior by Luca Dini is one of the best I have seen on any yacht – full of light and extremely stylish,” says De Marco. Five cabins offer optimal comfort to 11 guests who will enjoy highly personalised service since the yacht was planned for 11 crew. Although the galley has a smaller footprint than the gym, a central island and a large pantry make it user-friendly.

In the guest areas the feeling is laid-back and refined. Dini describes the ensemble of light veneer (sycamore), with darker accents (ziricote) underlined by stainless steel and lacquer details, marbles with geometric patterns, Italian furnishings – many from Fendi’s collection – and rich fabrics and leather, as “elegant, luxurious, and reassuring as well as clean, bright, harmonious and consistent with the owner’s character.”

The designer designed for the future. “We wanted to preserve a masculine feel, especially in the selection of colours, thus maintaining a contemporary, decisive and, at the same time relaxing, timeless style so that [the yacht] will retain a pleasant appeal even in a few years,” Dini says. “Then we let ourselves be guided by the owner’s passion for art, not only by creating special spaces to house the works of art but also by giving the interior a precious and therefore reassuringly luxurious touch.”

The exterior spaces are equally attractive, with the foredeck lounge and its private spa pool a personal favourite of Dini’s. “It is the place where I would like to spend time: a space away from prying eyes but overlooking the sea, an open and fun multi-functional space,” he says.

There is also plenty of room, as the owner requested, for dinner en plein air on the upper deck, an upper saloon that works well for movie night, a beach club for daydreaming by the water and an articulated platform to ease swimmers or kayaks into the sea. K2 is an elegant addition to the yacht fleet returning to the Mediterranean this summer. And she is no lightweight: under her lean lines, she packs a lot of comfort.

50M COLUMBUS LUXURY SUPERYACHT K2 YACHT REVIEW

There's much to enjoy aboard the 2021-launched 49.9m/163.9ft luxury yacht K2 from Columbus Yachts. A wealth of water toys and status as an Approved RYA Water Sports Centre will fill the daylight hours by themselves, and the group can unwind with a dip into the sundeck Jacuzzi or drinks at sunset seated in the alfresco lounge. The 11 guests have five wonderful en-suite cabins to make their own for the cruise, and 11 professional crewmen will ensure the highest standards of service.

The interiors

Luca Dini Studio created the marvellous light and contemporary interiors, using understated elegance to create a serene social environment in-balance with the natural world just through the almost full-height windows.

The main salon and formal dining area are combined into one large free-flowing space, with the formal dining area seating up to 10 guests in an airy setting with seating designed for practicality and comfort. Guests can choose to rest on the sofas within the main salon, or head upstairs to the skylounge for convivial conversation and card games beside the bar. As the evening draws in, the skylounge becomes a cinema where guests can lie back, relax and watch the latest blockbusters in high definition.

The engine room will mainly go unnoticed by guests, but luxury yacht K2 has two MTU 16V 2000 M96L engines that give a top speed of 22 knots, a faster-than-average cruising speed of 18 knots and a maximum range of 3,000 nautical miles - perfect for cruising from one end of the Mediterranean to the other, or reaching remote islands amongst the Caribbean and Bahamas.

The exteriors

Life outdoors couldn't be better than the versatile spaces aboard M/Y K2: The main deck aft is an extension of the main salon with its wet bar and selection of furnishings for lounging in the shade. There is easy access to the lower deck beach club and the broad swim platform, which is deep enough for a pair of sun loungers while leaving enough space to access the fold-out platform into the sea.

The sun-drenched upper deck is ideal for alfresco dining followed by drinks and conversation on the sofas along the stern. Most tempting of all, however, is the enormous sunbathing area complete with large Jacuzzi on the foredeck, commanding uninterrupted views in sunlight or under the stars.

The accommodation

The fresh and light interior styling of the social areas continues into the private quarters, which accommodate up to 11 guests over 5 en-suite cabins: 1 Master suite, 3 double cabins and 1 twin cabin with a Pullman berth.

The stately Master suite takes a forward position on the main deck, where the full-beam is put to use creating a spacious sanctuary furnished with a broad bed and widescreen TV, with other notable features including a corner lounge and walk-through wardrobe between the main foyer and bedroom. The en-suite bathroom has a bath in addition to a shower so that the occupants can soak away any tension after a long and fulfilling day.

The rest of the guest accommodation is placed on the lower deck, and all three of the double cabins have an air of tranquillity made by the warm gentle glow of floor lighting contrasted by the dark neutral accents in the furnishings. The double bed will seem all too tempting after a day in the sunshine playing on the water toys. The generous en-suite bathroom has a shower with bench seating for the convenience of guests.

The twin cabin has received the same attention to detail as all the others, providing two sumptuous single beds and a Pullman berth, all of which have ample natural and artificial lighting. The en-suite also has a well-proportioned bathroom where the spacious shower comes with bench seating, altogether offering the same quality amenities as the double cabins.

The crew accommodation is on the lower deck and provides for 11, ensuring that there is always the expertise on board for first-class service, efficient maintenance throughout every journey.

The water toys

The selection of water toys has plenty of options for thrill-seekers, and as an Approved RYA Water Sports Centre, guests can be trained in the use of the jet ski and earn their licence during their stay.

The interior social spaces are designed to flow effortlessly to the outdoor deck areas to create the ultimate indoor/outdoor onboard living. The main deck salon opens up to a stunning shaded sit-up bar and lounge area with marble-clad coffee tables overlooking the stern. The upper deck is the place for lavish alfresco dining and days soaking up the warm Mediterranean sun. The huge marble-topped dining table is partially shaded by the hardtop, which features louvers that can be opened for starry skies or sunshine. The full-beam master stateroom is a relaxing retreat on the main deck with a separate office area and large en-suite bathroom with a hammam and a full-size wooden bathtub. It also has access to the well-equipped gym, which features state-of-the-art machines and free weights. The remaining four staterooms are on the lower deck and include three spacious doubles and one twin with an additional Pullman bunk ideal for children sharing. A charter on K2 is all about making the most of her stunning cruising grounds and there are plenty of opportunities for fun on the water courtesy of her impressive toy box. Omsk , officially the Siberian Black League , is a warlord state in Western Siberia. Occupying the territory of the former Omsk Oblast, it borders Tomsk to the north, the Kazakh SSR to the south, Tyumen to the east, and Novosibirsk to the west.

Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union , the city of Omsk, initially held by the West Siberian People's Republic , was seized by a league of ultranationalists sharing views of anti-German sentiment and revanchism. Led by Dmitry Karbyshev 's All-Russian Black League, upon the seizing of Omsk, the ultranationalist regime had to industrialize and fortify it. In a way, some could say it's nothing but a fortified city in which the Black League militarizes and prepares for its future conflicts.

The political system of Omsk is governed as a militarist one-party state since its founding, ruled by Karbyshev and his like-minded comrades of the All-Russian Black League, an organization fanatically devoted to revanchism against the Greater Germanic Reich . However, at heart, Karbyshev is a Russian and while he sought to create an ultranationalist military state to take revenge against Germany, he did not account for the despots that wished to claim as much power as possible from him. Karbyshev is represented in-game as a dying man soon to fall, due to him leading a brutal military dictatorship, while being opposed to the radical rhetoric of his officer clique. The Black League has since become an ultranationalist state, even more radical in their hatred of Germany. Due to Karbyshev's declining health, many of the other officers have gained massive influence in the leadership of Omsk. The reality is that Karbyshev started a movement that assumed it was able to change the hearts of the despots with nationalism rather than terror; but it has since been corrupted beyond his visions, and there is little he can do to stop the train of degeneracy. Indeed, once Karbyshev dies and Omsk is still around, actual ultranationalist and General Dmitry Yazov will assume leadership of the Black League and prevent the despotic cliques from growing.

Under the sheer doctrine of anti-German sentiment, the theory of the “Great Trial” in Omsk comes in. This is where the warlord state will prepare for its final assault on the Reich, as revenge for the “First Trial” which brought the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the “Second Trial” being the West Russian War . Their hatred doesn't stop with just Germany, but it includes many who collaborated with them. Some officers of the Black League even go as far as to want to destroy the United States for not helping enough during the Great Patriotic War. In preparation for their war with Germany, they are expectant of nuclear strikes and so have started to construct massive metro tunnels to double as shelter from the warheads and radioactive fallout. The resolve of the Black League cannot be stopped, even with the threat of nuclear war.

Omsk is one of the hardest paths in TNO, due to it being weaker than a lot of the surrounding warlords and being unable to conduct diplomacy at all. To reunite Russia, Omsk will have to fight every single state in its way. Their end goal is the complete extermination of the Reich and the German people, and they will stop at nothing to reach this. They are hard-coded for hostility and are always at war with someone, but an AI Omsk will almost always never be successful. Despite being founded on nothing but hatred, when they unify Western Siberia and start to emerge on the international stage, they actually try to conceal their ideology and ambitions from foreign influences. They stick with a nondescript name of the “West Siberian Provisional Authority” under the guise of a protective military authority and switch their ideology to “Despotism”.

National spirits

During the Last Trial, each of us saw and faced Hell on Earth. The Nazis razed our cities, slaughtered our families, and shattered the Union we worked so hard to build. And as the world unraveled around us, we resolved to never again allow the Teuton to despoil our homes. Never again would we tremble in fear as the jackboot trampled on our soil.

Whatever the cost, whatever the sacrifice, the day of the will come.

On that day, they will feel our terrible vengeance.

Our backs are pressed against the wall, our supplies run low, and yet morale is as high as ever. Each and every son and daughter of the Black League know their mission and know they have nothing to lose, for the Last Trial already robbed them of everything. This simple truth has transformed the League from a band of disgruntled veterans to an army with discipline unparalleled in the Russian wastes.

We will survive our current, dire circumstances, we will rebuild what was lost, and when the comes, we will repay our enemies for every life lost.

It is a sad fact that the founder of the Black League, General Karbyshev, is not as young as he once was. As he has aged, though his mind is as sharp as ever, his body has become frail and weak. The people weep to know that he is not long for this world; and yet not all is lost. The loyal sons and daughters of the Black League's officer corps are glad to receive and deliver General Karbyshev's orders, and even to reinterpret them when the General's mind has slipped.
It is a service that most are glad to perform, no matter how much the General begs for it to end.

Omsk has at least eleven generals.

Ironically, according to a former developer of West Siberia, Omsk at one point had a National Socialist path as a "sane" option, due to now-former head developer Pink Panzer wanting every region in Western Siberia to have multiple paths. This was changed after the other developers convinced him to have Omsk only have one path.
Omsk was partially inspired by the Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia , a militant group that aspired to carve out an ethnic Armenian homeland in eastern Turkey.
