39-ft S/Y WISP Launches and Heads South

39-ft S/Y WISP hit the water after a compressed build time of less than a year. Photo credit: Alison Langley
On August 5, our latest design, WISP, was gently lowered into the harbor in Camden, Maine. The 39-footer is the most recent in a string of luxurious daysailer/weekenders we’ve designed over the last couple of decades. She was designed to be beautiful, comfortable, easy-to-sail, and fast—and by the end of that week in August we were able to see how we did on all counts.
While packing plenty of performance under sail, Wisp effortlessly transforms into a luxury weekender, featuring saloon seating for four and a queen-size forward berth. Photo credit: Alison Langley
WISP hit the water after a compressed build time of less than a year, and that last week was key in pulling all the details together. Lots of last-minute details in systems and rigging took place in a well-choreographed rush orchestrated by Alec Brainerd, founder of Artisan Boatworks , as the goal of sea trials loomed Thursday morning. Step the mast, tune the rig, bend on sails, commission the engine, electrics, and hydraulic system…. Details seemed endless, but by midday Thursday we were casting off lines and heading out to see how she sailed.
With crimson cushions and backrests in place, we began to test the luxury of the cockpit even before sails were unrolled—with owners, builder, designer, and reps from sailmaker North Sails , spar—builder Moore Brothers , and Ransom Morse, hydraulics genius, we were testing the capacity of the 13-foot-long cockpit. The cockpit was laid out to provide a generous lounge area forward and sail-handling focus aft at the helm, and easily met the challenge of eight people aboard.
On deck, WISP offers a sophisticated, dual-purpose cockpit: a plush, upholstered area for lounging forward and a dedicated sailing zone aft. Thanks to a design that marries functional ergonomics with classic aesthetics, the helmsperson enjoys easy access to all sailing controls without leaving the wheel. Photo credit: Alison Langley
The day was clear and warm, with a gentle sea breeze building. We tuned the electrically-furling mainsail to mate the mandrel to the winch, then hoisted full main and unrolled the working jib. We’d designed the sial plan to provide really easy handling and plenty of area for lighter breezes, common in her home port in western Long Island Sound, so the six knots true wind was a perfect test bed. Dialing in the sail trim and sheet positions, we quickly found WISP’s groove, and soon were sailing upwind at about 26 degrees apparent and boat speed of 5.9 knots—calling that a win! After trying a couple of tacks we cracked off to a beam reach and unrolled the MPS, and speed jumped to 8 knots in 8 knots true.
These few minutes of sailing would be all her designer would experience, as a tropical depression rolled through the next day, and by the following Monday, she was headed south and west to her owner’s mooring in western Connecticut. But before she shoved off, we were blessed with a gorgeous Saturday afternoon photo-shoot opportunity on the tail-end of the storm, with strong breezes and priceless clouds to form a backdrop to the Camden Hills as master marine photographer Alison Langley plied her craft. Here are a few of the gems she captured—enjoy!

RM 1180: our 39-foot / 12m sailboat
When cruising rhymes with performance.
Should you be looking for a fast, elegant cruising yacht, capable of crossing either oceans or the next bay nearby, solo or with your family, the RM1180 will satisfy all these expectations. Just add charm and seduction on top.
Designed by Marc Lombard and developed by our internal engineering team, this fast and modern 39ft sailboat is one of a kind monohull, representing the perfect synthesis of our definition of a transatlantic (or any other ocean!) sailing yacht: breathtaking lines, remarkable performances, non-to-second comfort, not to mention environment-friendly construction in plywood and epoxy.
“An RM is all about stYle: you fall in love with her design”
A bluewater cruiser combining well-being and comfort
As soon as you enter the RM1180 saloon, you get the difference: soft and large companion way, unexpected feeling of space for a liveaboard sailing yacht of roughly 12m, omnipresent light, and 180-degree visibility.
Further down your visit, this feeling is reinforced: soft and dry atmosphere, without any condensation (consequence of the wood’s insulation capability), attention to ergonomics that make a difference in day-to-day life aboard, practicality of the U-shape galley, of a real-sized chart table, added to the soft and relaxing tones of the furniture: just breath, you’re in the RM1180.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
Marc Lombard Design team perfectly understood our expectations: conceiving the best plywood-epoxy 39ft sailboat. The specifications below show a perfect balance between the boat’s metrics: displacement, hull power, sail plan, liveaboard volume.

Thanks to this virtual tour, you will get most of the RM1180: natural light, ergonomics, feeling of space. The only thing you won’t perceive is the atmosphere provided by the wooden interior design. Come and visit us for real!
Elegance and performance: a reference in her category
At first glance, the RM1180 sets the bar: racy lines, personalised hull colour, feeling of power and safety. Sails up, comes the 39-footer’s personality: well-balance helm, smooth sea motion, speed over ground, responsiveness.
When it comes to maneuvering, the deck plan of the RM1180 has been fine-tuned with a combination of ergonomics and fittings which together lead to a mix of performance and safety. A good example of this is the position of the winches. Centered in the middle of the cockpit, their height facilitates their use by a standing crew, for an optimum safety combined with ideal body posture.

Stephens waring launches new design, 39-foot sailing yacht ‘wisp’.
Event has passed
BELFAST — Stephens Waring Design has launched the 39-foot sailing yacht Wisp, describing the boat as, “ a seamless blend of Spirit of Tradition aesthetics and modern sailing technology.”
The Wisp continues the legacy of the Stephens Waring Spirit of Tradition yachts, where classic design meets contemporary innovation.
“This vessel features a gracefully balanced hull reminiscent of mid-20th-century cruiser-racers, with elegant overhangs that echo historical yacht designs from 75 years ago,” said the yacht designers, in a news release.
On deck, Wisp offers a sophisticated, dual-purpose cockpit: a plush, upholstered area for lounging forward and a dedicated sailing zone aft.
“Thanks to a design that marries functional ergonomics with classic aesthetics, the helmsperson enjoys easy access to all sailing controls without leaving the wheel,” the release said.
Robert Stephens, the designer behind Wisp , said the boat, “embodies the Spirit of Tradition, combining timeless elegance with modern efficiency and comfort.”
Constructed by Artisan Boatworks in Rockport, Wisp features a foam-cored plywood deck, which enhances structural integrity and streamlines construction by allowing the deck to be assembled separately from the hull. This method not only improves structural rigidity but also accelerates the build process by synchronizing the construction of the hull and deck.
Paul Waring, co-designer, said, “Collaborating closely with our clients, Wisp transforms their dreams into reality, offering a powerful, elegant, and versatile sailing experience with uncompromising construction quality.”
Wisp is designed for outstanding performance with a moderate draft and generous sail area. Its Solent rig includes a working jib and a large, multi-purpose reacher, each on fixed furlers, ensuring adaptability and ease of handling. The yacht features advanced push-button sailing operations, ideal for navigating the light winds and choppy seas of Long Island Sound.
Innovative features include an under-deck mainsheet trim system with a reverse-purchase hydraulic cylinder, enhancing efficiency in jibes and load management. All winches are electric, providing effortless control for jib and reacher sheets, and for hoisting the roller-furling mainsail. Additionally, the swing-out anchor launcher, equipped with a gas-spring assist, offers both streamlined aesthetics and practical ease of use.

Silverton Yachts Review: 39 Motor Yacht
- By Jay Coyle
- Updated: October 4, 2007
When the folks at Silverton decided to redesign their popular 392 Motor Yacht, they called on current owners and dealers for input. About half their typical buyers would opt for diesel power and cruise; the rest would go with standard gas power and spend the bulk of their time entertaining dockside.
All should be satisfied with the new Silverton 39 Motor Yacht. Unlike many comfort-driven boats, she gives up nothing in the way of performance, offers a thoughtful layout and boasts excellent detailing.
Her hull is based on a Michael Peters design. The wave-taming forward sections are parabolic: slightly convex near the chine and a bit rounder toward the keel. Sections abaft amidships are cambered, and the 13-degree transom deadrise seems an efficient choice. A hull-side step optimizes her planing surface without compromising interior volume.
I spent more than an hour running at speed and wiggling about dockside, and was impressed. She felt more like a small, high-performance convertible than a pleasure platform. Kudos to Silverton for keeping weight in check and controlling the center of gravity.
The builder offers a variety of gasoline and diesel engine options. While the roughly $45,000 premium for diesels may not appeal to some, I believe gasoline power is inappropriate for a vessel of this size and service-unless you intend to remain tethered.
Our test boat, fitted with 385 hp Caterpillar 3126s, delivered a top speed of 27.5 knots and a cruising speed of 21.3 knots at 2400 rpm. A 20-knot cruise would be important to me, so I would select these engines or the bigger Caterpillars.
The interior’s satin-finished, hardwood cherry cabinetwork, Corian counters, soft goods and fixtures are a notch above average. The L-shape sofa is not a slab-side built-in; it is a deep, custom-made affair covered in synthetic leather.
A pair of matching ottomans hidden cleverly within the cocktail table can serve as footrests or additional dinette seating. The entertainment center also is strategically positioned to serve guests on Silverton yachts.
It is a step down to the galley’s hardwood sole. There is plenty of counter space, and the polished stainless-steel sink is large enough to wash real plates. There is a cooktop, a microwave, an electric oven and dual-voltage refrigeration.
The master cabin is aft with an island berth and queen-size innerspring mattress. There is excellent stowage, and separate head and shower compartments flank a built-in cabinet and a shelf for a television.
The forward cabin has a queen-size berth, also with an innerspring mattress. A dual-access forward head with separate stall shower serves guests.
Silverton’s SideWalk exterior layout on Silverton yachts lets the skipper and crew move from the bridge to the bow with minimal effort. The bridge gates that lead to the side decks are an improvement from earlier models, which had pocket doors that tended to be wind driven. A three-position helm bench has flip-up bolsters. The control console is ergonomically satisfying with space for a reasonable complement of electronics. Additional bench seating is immediately abaft the helm.
The afterdeck, just steps away, has a built-in bench seat, a wet bar with ice maker, and space for deck chairs and a table. While a boarding area on the afterdeck is convenient, another just forward of amidships would be nice. Silverton considered a rail gate, but had safety concerns.
I would be remiss if I did not grouse about the ornamental approach to fender stowage on Silverton yachts. Fenders are not styling accessories. When mounted on the bow rail, as they are on the 39 Motor Yacht , they could run afoul with a piling if the captain is not cautious.
“Indeed, the fender baskets fall outside the gunwale dimensions, creating a potential docking hazard, said Michael Usina, Silverton’s director of marketing. “We are going to relocate the baskets to a yet-to-be determined location. They will continue to be topside for easy access.
The 39 Motor Yacht’s styling may be challenging to the traditional eye, but the boat is well proportioned and cleverly executed. She will no doubt be as popular as her predecessor, 600 of which were delivered between 1996 and 2001.
The 39 is built at Silverton’s Millville, New Jersey, production facility. She is laid up by hand with stitched and woven reinforcement, and polyester resin. The bottom is solid fiberglass, and Coremat is used in the hull-side laminate to minimize reinforcement print-through. Areas below the waterline receive a vinylester skin coat to reduce the chance of blistering. A network of fiberglass stingers and web frames is formed over wood, and bulkheads are plywood on these Silverton yachts. The hull-deck joint is bonded, mechanically fastened and fiberglassed from the inside where accessible. The gelcoat finish reflects the quality of Silverton’s tooling, and I was pleased to find frameless windows.
Access to the engine space is through the saloon sole, and equipment removal hatches are provided in case major work is required.
An 8kW generator with sound shield is forward in the engineroom. The generator is a bit out of the way, but there is additional access under the saloon steps. Bilges are finished, and mechanical installations appear well thought out and properly executed. Internal seawater strainers are hearty, there are dripless stuffing boxes, and an engine-mounting system incorporates steel foundation beams within the span between web frames.
Base price with the 385 hp Caterpillars is $330,765. Expect to pay about $416,000 with popular options and a Raymarine electronics package.

Crews complete mile-plus pipepull under virginia's james river.
Crews installed the 5,700-ft-long section of pipe under the Newport News shipping channel in the James River in an operation that lasted more than a day.

A team working on the Hampton Roads Sanitation District’s Boat Harbor Treatment Plant Conversion and Transmission program reached a milestone in May when they completed the installation of more than 5,700 ft of large bore pipeline under the Newport News shipping channel in the James River in a continuous pipepull operation that lasted more than 24 hours.
The 42-in.-dia DR11 HDPE pipe will be part of a wastewater force main connecting from a new pumping station being built on the Newport News, Va., side of the river to the sanitation district (HRSD)’s Nansemond Treatment Plant in Suffolk, Va. To install it, the team used horizontal directional drilling.
The team originally planned for a water-to-water directional drill of about 4,000 ft, but realized they could eliminate one of the water platforms by extending the drill, says Paul Longo, senior associate and senior project manager at Dewberry, the lead engineer for the underwater transmission pipe installation.
“Extending it would add almost a half-mile of drill length and would push the limits of the material, the drilling operations, the mud handling systems—really the limits of the trenchless installation industry for this particular pipe at such large diameter and being HDPE,” he says.
The team—which also includes contractor Garney Construction; Huxted Trenchless, which performed the drill; Brierley Associates, which worked on the geotechnical and trenchless design; and Seaward Marine, which provided pile and platform installation—determined what they would need to make the longer pipepull work. The team performed supplemental geotechnical investigations and spent seven days conducting a pilot drill to verify conditions under the river.
“That gave us confidence in the ability to actually go through with the execution and make it ultimately successful,” says Jordan Carrier, executive vice president of pipe east at Garney.
While steel pipe would have had a higher safe allowable pull force, the team needed to use HDPE due to the corrosive marine environment. They found a HDPE pipe manufacturer in Texas, Performance Pipe, that was able to meet their specifications for ovality tolerances and ability to handle external loads. The team also used a pipe pusher from German-based equipment manufacturer Prime Drilling that was custom-designed for large diameter HDPE. The lead time on sourcing the pipe pusher was upwards of a year, Carrier says.
The team’s work platform on the river housed the pipe pusher, and they positioned the pipe through it prior to pull back to allow it to pass through freely or with additional compression. They were then able to use the pipe pusher to add compression to the back and relieve the tension from pulling, Longo says.
“We’re talking 5,700 ft of pipe,” Longo says. “You can’t even see the end of it.”
The soft soil under the river provided a challenge, particularly with the long length drilling. They dealt with it by installing the drill path deep, Longo says. The elevation of the bottom tangent of the drill was more than 170 ft below the water surface.
The team spent months constructing the pipeline, fusing it and staging it before the start of the operation to pull it into place on May 1. The actual pull of the mile-plus-long pipe started that day and continued for 39 hours until the evening of May 2 in an operation involving dozens of workers, according to Garney. The pull needed to be done in one continuous operation because of the difficulty of resuming after a stop with ground friction, and because of the risk of something happening out of their control in the busy shipping channel, Carrier says.
“Once you start, you don’t stop,” he says.
The team will place 4.5-in.-thick concrete mats over the pipe to protect it against anchor strikes and other potential sources of damage.
“It’s such a critical asset that HRSD can’t afford any sort of impact to the pipeline after it’s installed,” Carrier says.
The next stage of work will be installing another 3.5 miles of pipe across the river using marine open cut installation. Longo says trenching, installing, ballasting and covering the pipe will take between 12 and 18 months.
HRSD estimates the cost of the underwater pipe installation at $136 million. It is part of the larger Boat Harbor Treatment Plant Conversion and Transmission program, which is being done as part of its Sustainable Water Initiative for Tomorrow (SWIFT) initiative, to eliminate the discharge of sediment from a treatment plant in Newport News, Va., into the James River.
The Boat Harbor Treatment Plant site is being converted into a pump station to send wastewater to the treatment plant across the river in Suffolk at an estimated cost of $196.5 million, according to HRSD. Another 7,000 ft of pipeline is being installed on land at an estimated cost of $38 million.
Garney has four of the five projects associated with the program. Besides the underwater force main pipe installation, the firm is working on the land-based portion of pipe installation, Nansemond Treatment Plant advanced nutrient reduction improvements and Sustainable Water Initiative for Tomorrow (SWIFT) facilities.
The full project is scheduled for completion in late 2026.
