Influencers hyped the Amalfi Coast for years. Now it’s a ‘theme park.’
POSITANO, Italy — Ivan Stefanovik set up his tripod in the middle of the sidewalk, parting the crowd that had gathered to admire the sweeping cliffside views of the Amalfi Coast. After pressing record on his phone, he twirled and dipped his partner, who teetered in chunky-heeled sandals as her dark, wavy hair cascaded toward the ground. She laughed, and he whispered some pointers in her ear — strut more, wobble less.
When the digital nomad posted scenes of his trip on Instagram, his followers would see a stylish gadabout soaking up the natural beauty in one of Italy’s most-admired vistas.
What they wouldn’t glimpse was the ugliness outside the frame: The long queue at the Via Cristoforo Colombo overlook, where selfie-takers posed with their arms high in the air and their backs to the pedestrians struggling to get around the hordes. The endless parade of buses, cars and Vespas rumbling past, blowing plumes of exhaust. The dismayed expressions of residents who watched overtourism devour their beloved villages.
“Social media has a lot to answer for,” said Lara Capraro, a Positano local whose late father ran a tour boat operation. “People treat the Amalfi Coast like a theme park. I don’t know how much longer it can go on like this.”
The causes of overtourism are complex, but affected destinations can point to at least one overriding factor. Santorini, Greece, has a crush of cruise ships; Dubrovnik, Croatia, attracts rabid “Game of Throne” fans. The Amalfi Coast suffers from overexposure on social media. Search “Amalfi Coast” on TikTok, and you will be bombarded with serene videos of pastel-colored villages wedged into the cliffside like Jenga pieces.
“It’s a mixed bag,” said Mikaela Howell, a Philadelphia-based wedding photographer who was scouting out locations with her videographer husband. “It’s fun to have all the energy of people being here, but everyone wanting to see the same thing makes it a little less magical.”
Even Stefanovic, who says he mines TikTok and Instagram for inspiration, started to wilt in the heat and crowds.
“It’s getting hot,” Stefanovic said, as he paused the shoot to take refuge under a patterned black umbrella.
To prepare for my four-day trip to this scenic stretch of the Campania region, I consumed a steady diet of TikTok videos and Instagram posts. It didn’t take long to discover that the paradise depicted on social media omitted a trove of unpleasant details.
The Amalfi you don’t see on TikTok
The 34-mile-long Amalfi Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage site , is pinned between the Lattari Mountains and the Tyrrhenian Sea, an arrangement that is easy on the eyes but tough on urban planners. To attain la dolce vita, you need to climb countless steep steps in punishing heat.
The region can be difficult to access, which few influencers will tell you. (One memorable exception: Lexi Jordan , who slammed her compatriots for not providing “disclaimers.”) Most travelers fly into Naples and catch a train or ferry to the southern coast. Because of the impossible traffic and limited parking, renting a car is not recommended. The fashionable people cruising around in vintage Fiats are not showing us the harrowing crawl along SS163 or their futile attempts at finding a parking spot.
No influencers warned me that the ferries often sell out by early morning and that the only other reasonable option is the public bus. (Hiring a private boat was not my world.) After I huffed and puffed up a hill and several flights of stairs to the station in Sorrento, I spent an hour waiting for a bus to Positano. On the return, a coach crammed with passengers flew by our group waiting at a bus stop on the side of a dark road. The next one had more space. For nearly an hour, the children in the back sang Miley Cyrus songs at the top of their lungs.
“Influencers just show the good parts, but they don’t know about the transportation problems or how it’s not possible for us to rent a house because they’re all Airbnbs,” said Francesca Grammatico, a 20-year-old student who works at her family’s cafe, Il Panino, in Ravello. “I think in 30, 40 years, it’s going to be a tourist town. People my age just want to leave, because the quality of life is not very good.”
In Amalfi, I stepped around bodies splayed on the steps of the Roman Catholic cathedral and was nearly swept away by a mob trying to board a bus to Ravello. I had more room to move at Villa Cimbrone, a garden with the much-liked Terrace of Infinity.
Every influencer feed I watched featured a selfie on the Spiaggia Grande in Positano, but the beach attendants asked me to leave: once, because I was not a resident; the second time, because I had not paid 40 euros to enter the private strand.
At Le Sirenuse, a Positano hotel adored by influencers and celebrities such as Kylie Jenner, who celebrated her birthday there in 2019, a stern man in a trim suit informed me that the hotel was closed to the public till 6 p.m. Next door, Franco’s Bar opened at the same hour, though people dressed for an evening of cocktailing were already queuing up.
I took a detour from my itinerary and stopped at Hotel Marincanto, where the waitstaff was racing around the patio bar preparing for the sunset crowd. After downing a $10 (with tip) glass of lemon water, I returned to Franco’s. The line had fully subsumed the sidewalk.
Italian officials envision the Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport as one possible salvation . The facility — which has operated as a military airport, flying school, private airport, and firefighter and parachuter training center — reopened to commercial air in July, more than a dozen years after the last scheduled flight landed here.
Tourism and transportation authorities hope the revived airport will alleviate the pressure on the international airport in Naples, which handled nearly 12.4 million travelers last year, and disperse people to less congested parts of the Campania region. The intended effect is to extend the region’s season, which typically runs from April through October.
“Salerno, which is very popular among Italians, is not popular abroad,” said Margherita Chiaramonte, the commercial director of aviation at the Naples and Salerno airports for GESAC, the airports management company. “But it really deserves to be, because it has stunning, unspoiled villages and well-preserved traditional places.”
However, tourism experts and locals say the officials are deluding themselves. People will still flock to the Amalfi Coast. An unfamiliar destination with no social media bona fides is a tougher sell.
“We need to have that thing that everyone else has,” said Jonathon Day, a sustainable tourism expert and associate professor in Purdue’s School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, “or it’s like we’ve lost out.”
Traffic jams and no parking spots
For many influencers who make content as a career, chasing down followers and sponsorships takes precedent over painting a nuanced picture of a destination. They need to keep up appearances — and promote their brand — even at the expense of a destination’s quality of life.
“They have this idea or opinion of the best places and why, and the people who follow them are going to say, ‘Oh, I’m going to go here because so-and-so told me that,’” said Marla Royne Stafford, a professor of marketing and international business at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. “That makes them incredibly powerful.”
Day, the Purdue professor, doesn’t blame influencers for the chaos that overtourism has wrought. He faults government officials for being blindsided by the surge in visitors.
He said legislators should have proactively created a tourism management plan. Instead, they are scrambling to fix the problems with regulations that locals say aren’t working. For example, they introduced in 2019 an alternating license plate system for nonresidents that was supposed to tackle traffic and parking woes. Five years later, both issues are as bad as ever.
During a lull in serving visitors panini and lemony drinks in Ravello, Grammatico described her commute to school. She said the drive to the town of Amalfi typically takes 15 minutes in the offseason — but hours during peak months.
“I usually get out of school at 1 p.m. but won’t get home till 3 p.m.,” she said. She can’t wait to leave for medical school in Rome this fall.
Many locals do not use their cars during the tourist invasion for fear of never finding a parking spot. On foot , they avoid the crowded main pedestrian routes and follow a secret passageway through back alleys.
On a Saturday afternoon, Capraro sat on her patio near the Spiaggia Grande, the beach strip where hundreds of bodies were browning under the broiling sun. Tourists stopped by to ask for directions — “Really, up those stairs?” they would gulp.
Demanding and impatient tourists
Tourism is an economic dynamo in Italy, which U.N. Tourism ranked as the fifth most-visited destination by international travelers last year.
The sector poured about $238 billion into Italy’s coffers, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council , which translates to nearly 11 percent of the nation’s gross domestic product. This year’s forecast is even higher.
The Amalfi Coast has been a longtime magnet for travelers and creative types, including film stars, writers and artists seeking a muse or an Aperol spritz by the sea. The sharp rise in mass tourism is more recent.
The number of visitors started ticking upward a few years before the coronavirus pandemic and boomed after the global health crisis subsided. For the Amalfi Coast’s 13 villages, the Agenzia Regionale Campania Turismo registered 564,981 lodging check-ins in 2023, a 9 percent rise compared with 2019. A decade earlier, fewer than 400,000 people stayed here.
“Social media makes everyone feel like they can afford to visit Amalfi or Positano, and it has become super crowded,” said Debra Levinson, founder and chief executive of Mr. & Mrs. Italy , a tour operator. “They don’t necessarily need us, because their rooms fill up a year in advance or more.”
Levinson said the average daily rate on the Amalfi Coast has risen nearly 40 percent from pre-pandemic hotel prices, forcing budget travelers to spend beyond their means or find accommodations in less pricey cities and day trip to the coastal villages. She said that unless a client has a strong reason for visiting the area — say, their deceased mother once painted landscapes of the Amalfi Coast — then she will send them to alternatives such as the Italian Riviera, farther north on the Ligurian Sea, or Ischia, an island about 20 miles west of Naples.
“True luxury is being able to separate yourself from the masses of people,” Levinson said.
Shopkeepers in Amalfi and Capri complain about day-trippers much like the folks who lament the invasion cruisers to their shores. They, too, arrive en masse on ferries or buses, spend minimally and clog the streets monumentally, especially at photogenic sites on influencers’ lists.
“Basically, people don’t spend money,” said Paola Savinelli, who runs an Italian street food restaurant in the town of Amalfi. “They take pictures of the Duomo, buy a gelato or the cheapest thing they can buy, and then go.”
At a neighboring pottery store, a couple pawed through bins filled with four-euro souvenirs. They snapped a photo of themselves with ceramic plates decorated in lemons and left empty-handed.
“Before covid, it was calmer and the quality of people was better. They were more respectful,” Grammatico said. “They are demanding and impatient now.”
At a public bathroom in Ravello, an attendant’s smile was mostly greeted with grimaces or no expression at all. Anna, who collects the 1 euro bathroom fee and checks the supplies, said summer is “a mess of tourists.” Though the region relies on tourism dollars, that arrangement doesn’t mean she has to like her benefactors. “Sometimes they are rude,” she said in Italian, “but that’s life.”
Capraro said social media has unleashed a new wave of visitors who are younger and rowdier than their predecessors. They stay in Positano after the last ferries have departed — and party deep into the night.
She often waits till midnight to feed the cats who live on the beach. The boisterous tourists scare the strays, who hide until it’s safe to come out.

The captain of the Bayesian has insisted that he did everything possible to save those on board the superyacht , according to local reports.
Sources close to James Cutfield, 51, told the Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera that the 51-year-old New Zealander is currently living through the darkest days of his life as he is under investigation for possible manslaughter and culpable shipwreck charges.
They reportedly said Mr Cutfield repeatedly insists that he did not abandon any of the 22 passengers and crew and that he did everything could could to save them.
However, there reached a point when he could do little as the vessel had taken on too much water, they added.
Since Wednesday, Tim Parker Eaton, the engineer who was in charge of securing the yacht’s engine room, and sailor Matthew Griffith, who was on watch duty on the night of the disaster, are also under investigation for the same possible charges , their lawyer said on Friday.
British technology tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah were among the seven people who were killed after his superyacht capsized and went down on 19 August within minutes of being hit by a pre-dawn storm off the coast of Sicily .
In Focus | How the world of yachts got supersized
The sinking of the 56-metre yacht Bayesian and the tragic deaths of British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his guests and boat staff have given the public a glimpse into the rarefied world of superyachts, writes Boat Internationa l’s Lucy Dunn .
There are currently 12,626 superyachts on the water around the world with 1,166 superyachts in build or on order. If you have been to a Greek island this year, or maybe the Amalfi coast, you may have glimpsed them coming in and out of harbours and wondered who owns a yacht like that. Or who can afford to charter a yacht like that – which have an average price of around £180,000 a week.
While you may think of glossy influencers and A-listers, the superyachting fraternity is where millionaires are sorted from the billionaires from the centi-billionaires; the 0.001 per centers. Rarely will you find a celebrity with the financial clout to afford a yacht owned by Lynch, these are generally under-the-radar industry titans who don’t have household names.
So, what exactly makes a superyacht super? According to Boat International, where I work, it can be applied to any boat, motor or sailing yacht which is over 24 metres in length. Size, in the superyacht world, is everything – and yachts are getting bigger all the time.
Giant masts, moon pools and explorer pods: How the world of yachts got supersized
The sinking of Mike Lynch’s ‘unsinkable’ sailing vessel was not only a heartbreaking tragedy, but also gave us a rare glimpse into the superyachting fraternity. Here, Boat International’s Lucy Dunn looks at a group that is both secretive and innovative, and asks how such a high-spec sailing yacht could have sunk at all...

Ex-court appointed guard says mike lynch ‘became more like a family’.
A court-appointed armed guard, tasked with ensuring Mike Lynch did not abscond while facing fraud charges, has paid tribute to the tech mogul, saying the security team “became less of a detail and more like a family”.
Rolo Igno also described “the memory of a beautiful soul” in Mr Lynch’s daughter Hannah.
Mr Igno said he had the “privilege” of spending “almost every waking moment” with Mr Lynch while he was in custody in San Francisco, describing the detail as unlike any other he had ever worked and one that was “life changing”.
“As an executive protection agent, the number one rule is simple, don’t ever get close to the principal,” he said.
“They aren’t your friends, they’re a client and the relationship is strictly professional. But with Mike, that didn’t fly with him and for me that rule quickly dissolved.”
Bayesian captain ‘exercised right to silence’ in manslaughter probe questioning, lawyer says
The captain of the Bayesian yacht chose not to respond to prosecutors’ questions as he was spoken to for a third time on Tuesday, his lawyer has said.
James Cutfield, a 51-year-old New Zealand national, is under investigation for possible manslaughter and culpable shipwreck charges.
“The captain exercised his right to remain silent for two fundamental reasons,” lawyer Giovanni Rizzuti told reporters. “First, he’s very worn out. Second, we were appointed only on Monday and for a thorough and correct defence case we need to acquire a set of data that at the moment we don’t have.”
Being placed under investigation does not imply guilt or mean that charges will necessarily follow. Chief prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio has said his team would consider each possible element of responsibility including those of the captain, the crew, individuals in charge of supervision and the yacht’s manufacturer.
The Times reported one of Mr Cutfield’s lawyers as saying that the captain is “understandably very shaken up” after the ordeal last Monday.

Mike lynch’s wife did not want to leave scene of bayesian wreck without her family, says captain of boat near sinking.
Mike Lynch’s wife did not want to leave the scene of the Bayesian wreck without her family, the captain of a boat near the sinking has said.
Karsten Borner, the captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, which helped to rescue the 15 survivors of the disaster in Sicily, told People that Angela Bacares “didn’t want to leave because her husband and her daughter were still down”.
British technology tycoon Mr Lynch and one of the daughters he has with Ms Bacares, 18-year-old Hannah, were among the seven people who were killed after his superyacht capsized and went down on 19 August within minutes of being hit by a pre-dawn storm.
Four crew members who are not under investigation have left Palermo
Four other crew members, who have not been placed under investigation, have left Palermo.
Two of them headed for Dubai and the other two travelled to Istanbul.

Crew member under investigation over bayesian sinking leaves palermo, says source.
A crew member who has been placed under investigation for manslaughter and shipwreck in connection with the sinking of the Bayesian has now left Palermo, according to a source.
Sailor Matthew Griffith was on watch duty on the night the superyacht sank in Sicily, the source said.
He flew out of Palermo late on Wednesday, with the source saying he was heading for the French city of Nice.
Those under investigation have no obligation to stay in Italy but have to nominate lawyers so that the authorities have a way of remaining in contact with them.
The boat's 51-year-old captain James Cutfield, a New Zealander, and ship engineer Tim Parker Eaton have both been put under investigation for the same crimes.
Members of yachting community signal support for captain and crew of Bayesian as some under investigation
Members of the yachting community have signalled their support for the captain and crew of the Bayesian as some have been placed under investigation.
One wrote on social media: “Now we need those keyboard warriors and judgemental ‘know it alls’ to actually wait and listen to the unbiased actual professionals ...
“I still stand in support of all Bayesian crew and if things turn sour, I propose all my friends in yachting to stand together and sign a strong petition to support the remaining survived crew to Bayesian.”

Steward Health Care Chairman and CEO Ralph de la Torre speaking in Gozo in 2018 as Armin Ernst (first from left) looks on.
Opinion: Ralph is in a hurry, his yachts are waiting
The charming cardiac surgeon always seemed like a man in a hurry. Ralph de la Torre, Steward Healthcare System CEO, had no time to waste. He wanted to conclude the lucrative deal with disgraced former prime minister Joseph Muscat as quickly as possible.
Armin Ernst, CEO of Steward Healthcare International, urged the company lawyer on 27 January 2018 to seal the deal because “Ralph does not want to wait,” emails revealed.
By April 2018, de la Torre was feted in Castille by Joseph Muscat, who deftly duped the country: “The relationship (between Steward and Malta) will bring excellent results to Malta’s healthcare”.
De la Torre added his two cents: “Steward will be providing a transparent service”.
Reporters weren’t allowed to ask questions as Muscat escorted de la Torre away.
Those reporters were only allowed in for five minutes – after that, Muscat and de la Torre met behind closed doors.
Meanwhile, Muscat’s Deputy, Chris Fearne, was busy reinforcing Muscat’s lies. Steward, he told us, was “the real deal”.
Fearne now faces a criminal trial for his part in the biggest fraud in Malta’s history. Never since then has he apologised for duping the nation, and not once has he expressed any regret for lending his credibility to Muscat’s con.
Even after Muscat was ousted, Fearne continued to approve hundreds of millions of euro to be funnelled to Steward.
A joint investigation between the OCCRP, The Shift and The Times of Malta revealed the contents of filings before the US Securities and Exchange Commission. These allege that Ralph de la Torre offered Joseph Muscat a seat on the Steward board after he left office.
De la Torre is busy hitting the headlines. He’s being blamed for Steward’s bankruptcy.
Steward hospitals are being shut down . Workers were left unpaid .
A Steward hospital in Florida was infested with 3,000 bats. Another in Phoenix, sizzling at 30 degrees Celsius, was forced to transfer patients out after its air-conditioning system was left to fall apart. Its kitchen was closed for health violations, and the state ordered it to cease operations.
Massachusetts set aside US$80 million per year and paid US$30 million in advance to try and save some of the Steward hospitals in the State. Governor Maura Healey used her power as State Governor to take over St Elizabeth’s medical centre for public use, costing the State another US$4.5 million.
Two other hospitals, Carney Hospital and Nashoba Valley Medical Centre, which treated 23,000 patients and employed 1,250 people, are due to shut down.
Another two hospitals were closed in July. The New England Sinai Hospital closed its doors in April.
The American Prospect reported that Steward had been on an inevitable path to financial collapse since its previous owners, Cerberus Capital, looted the company of US$1.26 billion in 2016.
Steward was already in deep trouble when Muscat shook hands with de la Torre in Castille in 2018.
Disgraced former prime minister Joseph Muscat with his aides in a meeting Ralph de la Torre and Armin Ernst in 2018.
De la Torre made over US$100 million by selling all of Steward’s hospitals to a real estate investment trust called Medical Properties Trust (MPT) in a sale-leaseback deal which bound the hospitals to pay MPT extensive rent.
With that money, de la Torre bought a 190 foot yacht worth US$40 million dollars called Amaral and a US$15 million dollar sport fishing boat.
As Steward was losing hundreds of millions of dollars a year, de la Torre was paid at least US$250 million dollars.
No wonder he purchased a US$7.2 million, 500 acre ranch in Texas, and a massive mansion in Dallas.
A Steward affiliate, majority owned by de la Torre, purchased two private jets at a cost of us$95 million, the Boston Globe reported.
While Prime Minister Robert Abela was pumping hundreds of millions of our money to Steward, Ralph de la Torre married his 29-year-old second wife Nicole Costa in an elaborate ceremony on the Amalfi Coast.
At around the same time Steward paid US$3 million to Greenhill School in Texas where de la Torre’s two teenage sons from his first wedding were admitted to high school.
The health minister at the time the Vitals Global Healthcare deal was shifted to Steward, the health minister at the time, Chris Fearne, tried to convince us that Steward was “the real deal”. Meanwhile, The Washington Post called Steward “the biggest hospitals failure in decades”. Massachusetts’ Governor called Steward “a really bad operator”.
Massachusetts governor Maura Healey said, “I am disgusted by Ralph de la Torre”.
She said: “He basically stole millions out of Steward on the backs of patients and workers and bought himself fancy yachts, mansions and now lavish trips to Versailles”.
De la Torre was filmed attending an Olympics dressage event even as Steward hospitals were being closed down and he was subpoenaed to appear before Congress. “I hope he gets his just dues and that federal investigators will come after him”, she added.
Senator Bernie Sanders said, “Ralph de la Torre, Steward CEO is the poster child for the type of the outrageous corporate greed that is permeating our for-profit healthcare system.” He was right.
De la Torre kept spinning lies to the American public promising that his hospitals would continue to operate when he knew they were doomed to fail.
“Steward does not expect any interruptions to its day to day operations,” he said in May. Steward kept trying to attract patients because they were its only source of income. But Steward had stopped paying its suppliers and was short on everything – from medical supplies, toilet paper, to medical equipment. Just days later Steward hospitals were closing down or being possessed by the State.
Steward is now under federal investigation for fraud and corruption. De la Torre will be dragged before Congress next month. He might yet be charged in Malta too.
A federal grand jury in Boston is investigating Steward to determine whether it violated anti-bribery laws in Malta.
Governor Healey laid the blame for Steward’s financial meltdown squarely at the feet of Ralph de la Torre. “Good riddance and goodbye,” was her parting shot.
Joseph Muscat told his friend de la Torre: “I am confident your involvement in this project and country will yield exceptional results”.
Robert Abela defended Steward’s record in parliament and attacked the magistrate who uncovered the shocking fraud in Labour’s Vitals-Steward deal.
When will Labour finally apologise to the country?

It will be a long wait and meantime all those involved, whether in the US or Malta will continue to enjoy their ill gotten money at the expense of people who are being denied medical care.
And they couldn’t care less as long as the gravy train keeps stopping at their troughs!
I am currently involved in the care of a relative, and can truthfully say that, it is clearly evident that the health care system in Malta is being denied the finance it needs to run smoothly. Start by getting rid of those so called security people, they are there doing nothing , and the number of clerks, some of whom do not care about the patients, and others who cannot guide a patient to the right direction. Yesterday we needed to go from Oncology Phlebotomy to Materdie Phlebotomy, which we did not know exactly where it was, a person on the phone gave us directions to the out patient department, ooops that is where the help stopped, ask these G4S people for Phlebotomy, and you see the stare of wonder, finally after searching the signage we made it to the department, the so called security guard insisted that he sees the paper appointment, no not digital copy, the paper copy, or else leave and come back with the paper. FFS 2024 and this idiot is insisting on a paper copy.Get to reception, after literally telling the guard where to go and how to get there, ans she is insisting that the patient does not have an appointment, show her the patients appointment email, and she does not know what hit her. It was only through the intervention of a woman, in a blue uniform, who I took to be a nurse, that we got seen to. These things are happening every single minute of the day.
Grazie Profs – excellent report.
Good article Kevin, brings tears to my eyes thinking how the Maltese element in this horrendous scam are just giving everyone the finger and smirking every time they appear in court. Hopefully the Karma they get will nullify any hopes they have of a happy and lucrative retirement.
“Steward will be providing a transparent service”. So transparent, in fact, it can hardly be seen.
How much of this information was available to fearne in 2018?
How about finding out about the testimony and submissions in thee arbitration proceedings between Steward and the Maltese Government [about our money]?
De la Torre is in a hurry, as his yacht, fishing boat and private jets are all waiting to ferry him around the globe on very costly joy-rides at the expense of all those he swindled.
It will take a longish time, one presumes, before he can do that. One only hopes that these possessions will still be in working order and available to him when he eventually finishes his prison sentence and will be free to enjoy them – if at all.
In the meantime, here in Mala, patients seeking emergency treatment at Mater Dei have to ‘enjoy’ waiting, sometimes in agonizing pain or discomfort, for 10 to 12 hours before being seen by doctors and medical personnel working under pressure – probably to be then found a stretcher and be dumped in a basement corridor with so many others in the same condition and without any privacy.
There were boundless millions for the De la Torres of Stewards for milking the local health system – but only plentiful inconvenience and misery for those who have to seek medical services at the public health facilities!
Qed tara ta’ xiex hallast, Gahan. Kompli capcap, siehbi!
Can AI produce a flow chart of all these deals? I wonder.

What to do on an Amalfi Coast Yacht Charter
The Amalfi Coast and Capri Islands boast a surprising string of Medieval towns perched on dramatic cliff sides and enchanting bays that can be approached by the sea on a luxury Amalfi Coast yacht charter . Discover the charming Italian streets of Positano , enjoy a drink under a bougainvillaea terrace in Sorrento , and swim in the secluded coves of Capri .
It is not surprising that jet-setters from across the globe flock to this exquisite coastline, where pastel-coloured fishing villages, sapphire waters, and delectable cuisine provides an idyllic setting for an Amalfi Coast yacht charter. Not forgetting the pristine landscape, flanked with lemon and orange groves and carpeted with Mediterranean shrubs.
On the Amalfi Coast, Positano has several beaches: from the elegant and intimate Laurito and Arienzo to the exclusive Fornillo that looks out across the sea to the Li Galli Archipelago, which is part of the Punta Campanella Marine Nature Reserve just in front of Capri. With its twisting narrow streets, ateliers specializing in hand-made goods, and the iconic stairs connecting the old town to the beach, Positano is a jewel nestled in this stretch of coastline that has no equal in the world. It is a must-see destination during crewed Amalfi Coast yacht rental.
Sorrento, Vietri , and Amalfi are equally impressive, with their elegant urban profiles and the unmatched charm of exclusive terrains popular with travellers who choose to hire a luxury yacht on the Amalfi Coast. Make sure you take the time to visit the town’s beautiful churches during your Amalfi Coast yacht rental , including the Basilica di Sant’Antonio, Sorrento’s oldest church and named after Sorrento’s patron saint. Inside you’ll find Roman artefacts, medieval paintings, and a mesmerising gilded ceiling.
An Amalfi Coast yacht charter is also the perfect occasion to glide among the grottos and Faraglioni of Anacapri and Capri and shop at their many luxury boutiques. That said, an Amalfi Coast yacht charter would be incomplete without visiting Capri’s arch of love, known as The Faraglioni di Mezzo, where three dramatic rock faces rise out of the sea, creating the famed trio of sea giants.
As a top italian Yacht Charter Company, Silver Star Yachting recommends visiting the garden of Villa Rufolo, known as the “Garden of the Soul”.

Guide to the Amalfi Coast
A legendary destination at every turn
Sweet lemon scents punctuate the warm Mediterranean air along cobblestone streets lined with bougainvillea-covered villas, back-dropped by mountains swathed in green and the cobalt blue of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Widely considered to be Italy ’s most picturesque coastline, the Amalfi Coast’s breath-taking landscape of towering bluffs and pastel-hued villages terraced into the tumbling hillsides have long made it a magnet for the world’s VIP travelers.
On any Mediterraneran private yacht charter , the Amalfi Coast is a must-visit. Snaking along the southern coast of the Sorrentine Peninsula, the strip of coast was deemed 'an outstanding example of Mediterranean landscape, with exceptional natural scenic value’ by UNESCO in 1997, and was awarded a coveted spot on the World Heritage list. It’s easy to see why when you experience first-hand the magnificent white-washed cliffs that sheer down into the sparkling sea, interrupted only by precipitous corniche roads and vibrant lemon groves. Once a maritime superpower, it now boasts world-class restaurants and luxury resorts though still retains its simple, rustic Italian charm.
Stretching from Punta Campanella to Salerno, these seductive shores include the beautiful hilltop towns of Positano, Amalfi and Ravello, with the celebrated islands of Capri and Ischia lying a mere champagne cork's pop across the glittering bay. From true extravagance to pure relaxation, a luxury yacht charter vacation along the Amalfi Coast is by far the best way to experience everything it has to offer. Lying at the mouth of a deep gorge, surrounded by spectacular scenery, the town of Amalfi is the perfect place to soak up the fantastic atmosphere through a maze of winding alleyways, steep architecture and bustling waterfront.
Clinging to the cliffs above tiny coves and secluded beaches is the notoriously exclusive town of Positano , home to Italy’s rich and famous. Its palatial glamour, gourmet cuisine and famous ‘Moda Positano’ are sympathetically blended amongst draped flowering vines, majestic olive groves and gleaming turquoise waters to create a truly hedonistic experience. Sitting serenely off the coast of Positano is the Li Galli archipelago of Gallo Lungo, Rotunda and Castelluccio. Their secluded nature and spectacular settings are ideal for diving in and exploring below the water line.
Privately renting a yacht to explore the Amalfi Coast promises no end of things to see and do, and you can rest assured your entire charter party will find something to love about this region of West Italy. Whether you are chartering with friends or family, you can find your ideal crewed yacht with our comprehensive fleet of Amalfi Coast luxury charter yachts .

The Path of Gods trail from Agerola to Positano is a highlight, along with hikes to Valle delle Ferriere’s waterfalls , and Monte Faito where you will get the most amazing panoramic views of the Gulf of Naples and the Sorrento Peninsula .
Positano is no doubt best explored by yacht charter, as it provides a unique perspective of the town and the stunning coastline. The town is built into the side of a cliff, and the houses are literally stacked one on top of the other . The main beach in Positano is Spiaggia Grande , a long and wide stretch of sand with stunning views of the town and the surrounding mountains. There are also other smaller beaches in Positano, such as Fornillo Beach , for those looking to stay away from crowds.
Positano is famous for its traditional Italian cuisine . Some of the most popular dishes include spaghetti alle vongole (spaghetti with clams), and scialatielli alle cozze (fresh pasta with mussels).
For in-land exploration, there is the Path of Gods , a hiking trail that offers incredible views of the coastline. Positano is also a great place to shop for souvenirs, ceramics, and local arts.
Ravello is another town on the Amalfi Coast that should not be missed on an Amalfi Coast yacht charter. Perched high above the Tyrrhenian Sea, Ravello offers stunning panoramic views of the coastline. The town is surrounded by lush gardens, terraced vineyards , and lemon groves , creating a serene and romantic atmosphere.
One of Ravello’s most iconic landmarks is Villa Rufolo , a historic villa known for its beautiful gardens. The villa dates back to the 13th century and has been a source of inspiration for many artists and writers. The annual Ravello Festival , featuring classical music concerts, takes place in the gardens of Villa Rufolo.
Also visit the medieval Ravello Cathedral , dedicated to Saint Pantaleon. Its interior houses valuable artworks and relics, making it a cultural and historical site.
Capri is an island located off the tip of the Sorrentine Peninsula. It is one of the top destinations for yacht charters in this area and should not be missed. The Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra) is one of Capri’s most iconic natural attractions. This sea cave is renowned for its mesmerizing blue color, created by the sunlight filtering through an underwater cavity. Another huge attraction is the iconic sea stacks, known as the Faraglioni rocks , rising dramatically from the sea. Boat tours often take you through the arch of the Faraglioni for a memorable experience.
Capri town itself offers high-end shopping , fine dining , and a lively atmosphere. Explore the ruins of Villa Jovis , an ancient Roman villa, perched on the eastern cliffs of Capri. Built by Emperor Tiberius, it offers stunning views of the Gulf of Naples .
When it comes to marinas you have two options in Capri. Marina Grande and Marina Piccola . Marina Grande is the larger of the two, bustling with activity, while Marina Piccola offers a quieter setting with crystal-clear waters.
Located on the northern side of the Sorrentine Peninsula , Sorento serves as an excellent base for yacht charters, providing easy access to some of the most sought-after destinations in the region. Positioned near the Amalfi Coast , Sorrento offers a gateway to the enchanting islands of Capri and Ischia , as well as the picturesque Amalfi Coast itself.
Sorrento has a rich cultural heritage. Visitors can explore historical landmarks such as the Sorrento Cathedral , a medieval gem known for its intricate architecture and artistic significance. The Basilica di Sant’Antonino , dedicated to the town’s patron saint, provides further insight into Sorrento’s religious and historical roots.
Sorrento also provides well-equipped marinas to cater to various vessel sizes. The Marina Grande in Sorrento offers first-class services and a vibrant waterfront atmosphere. Additionally, the Marina di Cassano offers a tranquil and secure harbor, making it an appealing choice for those seeking a more serene setting.
Naples is the third-largest city in Italy and is often referred to as the Capital of the south.
This is where the world’s favorite snack food “pizza” was invented, made from plain flour and topped with whatever was easily available in the territory – some fresh tomatoes, goat’s cheese, and herbs. They still make it as they used to centuries ago , and it’s just as delectable! Some of the best places to try Neapolitan pizza in Amalfi charter yacht include Pizzeria Donna Stella in Praiano, Pizzeria San Giovanni in Positano, and Pizzeria Da Nino in Ravello .
Besides food, Naples is also known for its stunning architecture, including the Royal Palace of Naples and the Castel dell’Ovo . The city is also home to the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, which houses an impressive collection of ancient Roman artifacts .
Our Favorite Yacht Charter Attractions
Faraglioni rocks (capri).
The Faraglioni Rocks are a set of three towering rock formations located off the coast of Capri . These majestic limestones rise from the sparkling waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea and are an iconic symbol of enduring romance .
The Faraglioni Rocks are also home to a variety of marine life, including many colorful fish and even some elusive sea turtles best experienced while swimming . Snorkeling and diving are also popular activities for yacht charters.
To fully enjoy the Faraglioni rocks, it’s best to wake up there for the sunrise and enjoy the day swimming or visit after the crows have left to enjoy the stunning sunset.
Blue Grotto
The Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra) is located on the northern coast of Capri, near the town of Anacapri. The water in the cave is some of the clearest water in the world and the cave’s interior is illuminated by a bright blue light from the reflection of sunlight. The cave can only be accessed by boat – anchor your charter yacht and enter the cave with small rowboats.
Blue Grotto can be crowded during peak season , a quieter alternative is Grotta dello Smeraldo (Emerald Grotto) in Conca dei Marini. (Every Christmas, Grotta dello Smeraldo features an underwater nativity scene with life-sized figures of the Holy Family , submerged 4m in the cave.)
Pompeii is a must-visit attraction on any charter vacation on the Amalfi Coast. Once an ancient Roman city, Pompeii was frozen in time by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD . This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a true archaeological marvel. Excavations reveal remarkably preserved streets, houses, and public spaces, offering a glimpse into daily life nearly 2,000 years ago .
Key attractions include the Forum, amphitheater, and well-preserved residences like the House of the Vettii . Visiting Pompeii on a yacht charter adds a unique dimension, with the site conveniently accessible from the nearby Amalfi Coast, creating a seamless blend of maritime exploration and historical immersion.

When is the best time for a yacht charter on the amalfi coast.
The optimal season for a yacht charter along the Amalfi Coast spans from May to August . The seas are generally calm during these months, and there is almost constant sunshine and clear skies, with temperatures reaching the nineties . If you do not like the intense heat, it’s advisable to plan a yacht charter outside June, July, and August.
The summer months on the Amalfi Coast see minimal rainfall , ensuring uninterrupted on-deck enjoyment without concern for unexpected showers. Additionally, the Sorrentine Peninsula benefits from being quite sheltered from strong wind on both its northern and southern ends, promising a seamless cruising experience.
How much does an Amalfi yacht charter cost?
With a wide variety of charter yacht choices and itineraries, there’s an option for every budget . Depending on what you wish to have and do on your yacht charter the price varies quite a bit. How do I book an Amalfi Yacht Charter?
Ideally, you’d inquire about an Amalfi yacht charter 12 months in advance . WHY? The best yachts are often fully booked long in advance and it’s not unusual to see popular dates booked 2 summers ahead for a yacht charter vacation on the Amalfi Coast . Inquiring less than 6 months ahead often means that your first choice is unavailable for charter. Additionally, you might find that the yacht you wish to charter, can’t make it to the port where you wish to commence your yacht charter.

The Amalfi Coast offers warmer weather earlier in the season than the South of France and the Cinque Terre. Chartering a yacht in April is a good solution to avoid the crowds, yet connoisseurs would most likely prefer to charter post-season in October to enjoy the warmer waters. The high season is July and August.
Most of the Amalfi Coast yacht charters will start in Naples, before embarking on a great cruise around the nearby islands:
- Naples - The birthplace of pizza and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Take a stroll along the lovely ‘Lungo. - Ischia - The biggest island in the Bay of Naples and home to the famed hot springs. - Capri - Only reachable via boat, this is arguably the most desirable island on the coast due to its natural beauty. Explore the Grotta Bianca, Natural - Arch, Faraglioni rocks and the bay of Marina Piccola before retiring to watch the sunset. - Positano - A hidden gem nestled in the coastline and formed of pretty villages and great spots for watersports.

When is the best time to visit the Amalfi Coast?
The best time to charter a yacht along the Amalfi Coast is during the late spring and early fall months, specifically from May to June and September to early October. July and August are the peak months; however, you can expect a high number of crowds. Chartering outside these two months will ensure a more relaxed and peaceful experience.
What's the water temperature like around the Amalfi Coast?
The water temperature around the Amalfi Coast varies throughout the year, making it more suitable for swimming and water activities during certain months. The sea starts warming up in May, so you can expect comfortable swimming temperatures by late spring. The summer months bring the warmest water temperatures, ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and making full use of your yacht’s many water toys. The surrounding waters begin to cool in October, making swimming in the fall and winter months only suitable for the hardiest of individuals.
What airport will I fly into?
For an Amalfi Coast yacht charter, the closest and most convenient airport to fly into is Naples International Airport. The airport includes facilities for private jets, including a dedicated private jet terminal offering luxury, exclusivity, and privacy. FAQ - Frequently asked questions
Where i can more with yacht along the amalfi coast.
There are several options for mooring a luxury yacht on the Amalfi Coast. The equipped ports near the Amalfi Coast are Capri's Marina Grande, Amalfi's Marina Grande, and Sorrento's Marina Grande and Piano di Sorrento (on the Sorrento Peninsula). In Positano, on the other hand, there is no port, only a pier equipped for disembarking and embarking. There is also a buoy field in front of Fornillo beach. From these towns, you can quickly move to visit the inland villages like Ravello. All the Amalfi Coast is a Unesco World Heritage site.
With a superyacht you can also reach the Aeolian Island and the Sicily Coast or sail till Sardinia.
Between Capri and the Amalfi Coast, the only stretch of coast subject to restrictions is that of the Bay of Ieranto around Punta Campanella. Here you cannot enter with motor boats or anchor there. Instead, it is possible to stop along the coast, off Positano, next to the island li Galli, and around the island of Capri in front of the Blue Grotto or near the Faraglioni. These are just some of the mooring options available on the Amalfi Coast for luxury yachts.
All these places are the perfect yacht charter destinations.
What boats are available for rent on the Amalfi Coast?
There are a variety of boats available for rent on the Amalfi Coast. Motorboats, gozzi, inflatable boats and motor yachts are all options. The most famous shipyard in the area is the Sorrentine "Fratelli Aprea," which produces typical wooden gozzo boats in both basic and luxury versions. Pershing and Itama yachts are also available. You can also find old-fashion catamarans boats in wooden. However, sailboats and sailing yachts are more difficult to find as they are not very suitable for sailing in this area. Whichever type of boat you choose, you're sure to enjoy exploring the Coast from the water.
What staff will be onboard?
When chartering a luxury yacht for a stay on the Amalfi Coast, it is important to ensure that the vessel is staffed with a skilled and professional team. Renting a bareboat is not an option here for yachts. At a minimum, the yacht should have a skipper and a hostess on board; other figures such as chefs or masseuses can be arranged on request. The skipper will be responsible for navigation and safety, while the hostess will take care of passenger comfort and needs. Both roles are essential in ensuring charter guests have a relaxing and enjoyable experience.

Italy’s most glamorous ports
One of the Phlegraean Islands found along Italy’s beautiful Sorrentine Peninsula, Procida is a scenic destination and the start of your sailing vacation in one of Italy’s most attractive, arresting regions.
Procida has been a desirable vacation destination since ancient times, when members of Rome’s wealthy patrician elite would flock to the island to spend their leisure time in the sun and sea of this Tyrrhenian gem. Today, Procida wears its rich history on its sleeve. The Terra Murata Fort stands on the island’s highest point, overlooking a picturesque Mediterranean town of multi-coloured, multi-tiered construction that has inspired numerous novels and films.
Set sail from Procida to discover the Phlegraean and Pontine islands, and Italy’s famous Amalfi Coast. A couple of miles across the Gulf of Naples lies Naples itself—a buzzing metropolis listed among the world’s oldest cities and famously the birthplace of pizza. Brooding Mount Vesuvius and the buried towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum are a short sail away, and beyond is Sorrento: the start of the Amalfi Coast.

Our Procida sailing itineraries can, of course, be tailored to fit your individual needs, but each of them have been carefully selected to ensure you get to experience our favourite spots in the Procida, The Phelgaean Islands and The Pontine Islands.
Below we have summarised our favourite Procida yacht charters for each type of holiday, along with anything we believe you simply cannot miss out on.
For Families
Our Procida flotilla sailing holidays are ideal for families as they provide a perfect blend of independence and support – your own yacht and space, but opportunity to meet with like-minded sailors and families doing the same route as you.
As the lead boat remains nearby, families can enjoy a safe and relaxed sailing experience, creating lasting memories in a shared adventure on the open sea.
Our Pontine Islands Flotilla is perfect for families, especially those travelling with younger children. Steeped in History, Myth and Legend, the Pontine Islands have remnants of ancient tunnel systems and grottos. Discover Ventotene – the birthplace of the Mermaid Myth – and the shipwrecks that are said to have found their watery resting place, at the hands of the Sirens. Or, enjoy family fun on Ischia, with a TukTuk (Ape/ micro-taxi) Tour of the Island, its phenomenal beaches, hiking routes and volcanic peaks.
For Couples
Italy is – arguably – one of the most romantic countries in the world, and the Amalfi coast is absolutely one of the most romantic parts of Italy. If sharing incredible dining opportunities and fine wines is your love language, then our Procida Italian Cuisine Flotilla , which will take you to some of the finest locations for food and wine in the country (a foodie paradise), might be the perfect itinerary plan for you.
Other locations included in our itineraries which make for the perfect for a romantic getaway, include:
- Ischia Port (known for its romantic piano bars and nightlife)
- Forio , (for dreamy Botanical gardens and thermal baths).
- Sailing across the Gulf Of Naples , taking in the views of the mainland as the ocean sparkles around you.
- Sorrento (an artist hotspot, known for spectacular views of the bay. Explore The Regina Giovanna for a romantic beach or find one of the many bars and restaurants with truly breath-taking views).
- Capri – most will know to sail the north of the island, looking out for where to stop and explore the infamous Blue Caves – mainly the Grotta Azzurra and its cousin to the south, Grotta Verde- as well as beaches, such as Spiaggia di Marina Piccola and the spectacular Gardens of Augustus.
- Amalfi Coast – an instagram-approved hotspot for romance, here you will find postcard-worthy pebble beaches set before what appears (from the sea) a wall of buildings – colourful, climbing high above ocean level – also providing some incredible walks (bring sensible footwear!) and quaint eateries.
For a quieter – more quaint sailing experience, consider a bareboat charter around the Pontine Islands – which also sets sail from Procida and showcases the island’s ancient history and Italian charms.
For First-Time Sailors
If it’s your first time sailing from Procida or around the Gulf of Naples and Pontine Islands, we have a few must-see spots.

Italian is one of the most popular cuisines in the world, and for good reason.
Italian culture is so closely intertwined with food, families coming together annually to press the tomatoes for their sauce. Nonna’s passing down recipes lovingly from generation to generation.
We offer several flotilla sailing yacht charters that follow itineraries which encompass the best spots for food and drink from Procida and Ponza .
We have listed a few of our absolute favourite spots below:
- Procida : Terra Murata Wine Bar: For those looking for a combination of great food and local wines, Terra Murata Wine Bar is an excellent choice.
- Naples : For truly authentic Italian food, try out Cibi Cotti (Nonna’s Kitchen) food that will warm your heart and bellies.
- Amalfi : Hostaria di Bacco gives diners a spectacular view of the ocean, from high up in the mountains. The food and wine selections are divine.
Underwater Adventures
- Both Naples and Ventotene have incredible dive sites to offer – the sunken ships in both areas offer refuge to marine life around their wrecks.
- Capri’ s Blue Caves have been mentioned a lot – but that is for good reason, they are truly breathtaking.
- Sorrento also offers scuba and snorkelling hotspots off its jagged coastline.
- Ponza : Visit the Grotte di Pilato, a network of sea caves.
History and Culture
Procida and the Pontine Islands with their rich history, offer various sites for exploring the cultural heritage of the region. Here are some of the best places for history and culture around the Pontine Islands:
- Ventotene Roman Villa (Villa di Giulia Felice): Explore the well-preserved Roman villa on the island of Ventotene. The villa, believed to belong to Giulia Felice, provides insights into Roman architecture and lifestyle.
- Ventotene Archaeological Museum: Located in the heart of Ventotene, this museum displays artifacts from the Roman period, offering a deeper understanding of the island’s historical significance.
- Ponza Harbor and Historic District: Wander around Ponza’s lively harbour, surrounded by colourful buildings and traditional architecture. The historic district reflects the island’s maritime past and is a charming area for exploration.
- Ponza Castle (Castello di Ponza): Perched on a hill overlooking the harbour, the castle provides panoramic views of Ponza. Originally built for defence, it offers a glimpse into the island’s mediaeval history.
- Palmarola Archaeological Site: Palmarola, though sparsely inhabited, has archaeological sites that reveal evidence of ancient human presence. Explore the island’s less-known historical aspects.
- Zannone Island: Although uninhabited today, Zannone has historical significance. The ruins of a Benedictine monastery and a Roman-era fishpond make it an interesting destination for history enthusiasts.
- Grotte di Pilato (Pilate’s Caves) on Ponza: These sea caves are named after the legend that Pontius Pilate was exiled to Ponza. Explore the caves by boat to witness their natural beauty and learn about their historical associations.
When exploring these historical sites, consider guided tours or local insights to enhance your understanding of the cultural heritage of the Pontine Islands. Each island has its unique stories to tell, providing a fascinating journey through time.
The best time to visit Procida is between May and September – when the weather is warm and the average wind speed rarely creeps above 3 knots.
It is worth noting that toward the end of July and throughout August, the average temperature is 29°C – which may make some activities (hikes etc) difficult.
Our Procida yacht charters require level 2 or above experience from a sailor, which means the sailor will need at least 10 days or 200 miles as skipper on an equivalent size yacht.
Mild and balmy summer breezes originating from the northwest typically range between 8 and 12 knots, with a shift towards southerly winds later in the afternoon. The tidal range remains below 0.5m, and the area experiences minimal tidal currents or wind-driven currents. For more information please look at our Procida Sailing Conditions .
Our yacht charters from Procida start at £1,188 , off peak and on a basic package.
They can range higher as, like any holiday, the cost of chartering a yacht varies depending on the number of people, the yacht type, the time of year and more.
The nightly cost for buoys is approximately EUR 50 and should be settled directly at each anchorage.
Marina fees start at EUR 50 per night, varying up to EUR 250 per night, contingent on the season and boat size. For more information, check Procida Essential Information .
