Azimut Yachts History

University student Paolo Vitelli made the bold move of starting a yacht chartering company, Azimut Srl, before he had even received his degree. He rapidly realized a brokerage would be more profitable, and within a year was distributing some of the most prestigious yacht brands in Italy. Over the next few years, Vitelli would fine-tune his business, rising to become one of Italy’s foremost companies specializing in importing and distributing pleasure boats before launching his firm into the yacht designing business. Azimut saw the first of its many successes with the design of the AZ 43′ Bali, a mass-produced fiberglass boat launched as a joint venture with Amerglass.

In 1985, Azimut acquired Benetti Yachts, one of the oldest builders of luxury motoryachts who had been delivering world-class yachts since 1873. Azimut’s acquisition of the historic Viareggio-based shipyard allowed the company to expand into constructing its own yachts. The inventive firm revolutionized the yachting world by introducing several innovative features now accepted as standard requirements, including large leak-proof frameless windows, electric seats, and walnut interiors.

For the past ten years, Azimut has taken an active interest in environmental concerns, spurred by its unrivalled position in the pleasure boat industry to become a leader in environmental sustainability as well. For its consistent and effective management system aimed at reducing the environmental impact of its operations, Azimut was awarded ISO 14001 certification. The environmentally conscious company decided to adopt RINA principles and to achieve RINA Green Plus notation, resulting in the introduction of a range of innovative solutions that include hybrid propulsion motors to sail with a near-zero reduction in noise levels and lower consumption on short day trips, high performance propellers, and environmentally compatible materials.

At Palm Beach, the yacht’s designers showed initial renderings of the largest-ever Azimut. Marijana Radovic and Marco Bonelli of Milan-based m2atelier were responsible for the interior and Alberto Mancini did the exterior.

Mancini, a veteran yacht designer, told Robb Report that this was only the second yacht of hundreds in his career where he was given carte blanche over the exterior, so it ended up morphing past 40 meters into the Grande 44M. Typically, he said, the shipyard gets involved with the details of the design, and most owners want to have a say, so most designs end up as compromises. This time, says Mancini, Azimut not only left him alone, but let him go wild.

And he did.

The yacht itself is revolutionary in some ways, with a 550-square-foot upper deck that can be converted into an owner’s space—the owner’s “enclave”—with two primary suites and a forward glassed-in area that works as an office or dining room, with the world’s best view. Its four stern decks are tiered, emphasizing large exterior spaces and easy movement between the interior and exterior spaces.

Then there’s the 12-person dining table on the aft cockpit above a swimming pool with a transparent window looking out over the ocean. This optical illusion is one of several wow factors, but mostly the yacht overwhelms with quiet luxury.

Radovic and Bonelli said their goal was to create a simple interior with muted tones and splashes of color, as part of the Azimut DNA. The pair are not yacht designers, so brought a new approach from their residential architecture and private clubs to the design.

“We wanted to clean up the space and enhance it, not overwhelm it,” said Radovic. “For instance, we designed the dining table to be a reflection of the pool, and in every case, we made sure to follow what was happening on the exterior.”

Bonelli added that the goal was to “enhance the flow” between the interior and exterior. “It seems simple, but there’s a lot of effort to finding that balance,” he said.

The shipyard also focused on the technical components of the build, claiming that it will produce 10 to 30 percent fewer fuel emissions than yachts of the same size and displacement. Federico Ferrante, president of Azimut Americas, said the 44M will have a hydrodynamic wing under the dual-mode hull that provides better fuel efficiency at the same speeds. “It also reduces the pitch—the annoying movement of the boat—and smooths out the wake,” said Ferrante.

The 44M also has lithium batteries that allow it to run the boat’s hotel (non-propulsion) load for 4 hours during the day and eight hours at night, at anchor. The vessel also has two electric generators in the shafts that recharge the batteries when under way. “Most yachts typically run their diesel generators 24/7, which causes lots of noise, emissions and cost,” said Ferrante. “This system cuts that in half.”

The 44M’s molds are being constructed at Azimut’s Livornia shipyard in preparation for the first build. The first five units have been sold to current Azimut owners.

Azimut is coming out all guns blazing at Cannes Boat Show with not one but three new show debuts. The freshest of these is the Seadeck 7, which was still having the finishing touches applied to it as we write this.

Like its smaller sibling, the Seadeck 6 , which was launched earlier this summer, the Seadeck 7 has a strong focus on sustainability and will be the first Azimut to feature a full diesel electric hybrid drive. Technical details of this have not yet been released but it’s likely to use Volvo Penta IPS drives and D13 engines linked to a smaller electric motor and battery pack for silent manoeuvring and low-speed cruising over short distances.

It’s not just the drive system that contributes towards a claimed 40% reduction in emissions. Extensive use of carbon fibre and a vacuum-infused hull keeps weight down for improved fuel efficiency, while reconstituted cork decking and carpets made from recycled plastics reduce the consumption of virgin raw materials.

Sliding side doors provide a closer connection with the sea

The design follows the template set by the Seadeck 6 with softer lines that reflect its focus on relaxation and a closer connection with the sea. At the heart of this is Azimut’s ‘Fun Island’ featuring a drop-down staircase into the sea and folding platforms on either side of a central sunbed and dining area. The starboard one even has fittings for a hammock stand built into it.

Azimut Yachts 55 Reviewed

I was in a trance gazing out the portside window of the Azimut 55’s full-beam master stateroom. As I stared at a turquoise sea off Savona, Italy, it was easy to understand why the builder had included the rectangular-shaped glass. Rain fell in earnest from an ominous sky, with an army of droplets landing on the yacht, but the gray-carpeted stateroom made the space feel cozy. Gray zebrawood veneers contrasted with dark oak, brass and steel accents, and fabric-covered walls, creating a contemporary ambience. Soft white LEDs instilled a warm feeling. The only thing missing was a cappuccino and a good book. That I felt so relaxed and happy on such a lousy weather day is a testament to Azimut’s skill in building boats with smart living spaces. The Azimut 55 is the latest example of the builder’s ability to use nuanced design decisions to great effect. The 55’s master is outfitted with a double berth offset at a 45-degree angle, increasing the sense of volume and floor space. There’s a four-drawer dresser under the portside window, but given the view and the fact that there are a couple of hanging lockers and underberth stowage, I would forgo the dresser for an optional settee here to take full advantage of the serene scene. The en suite head has a Tecma toilet, a stall shower, and a sink with a rosewood marble countertop.

Two more staterooms include a forepeak VIP with a double berth, also kept bright with hullside glass and an overhead hatch. The VIP has an en suite head that serves as the day-head via a companionway door. Abaft and to starboard of the VIP is the third stateroom, with twin berths. Should an owner have a captain, there’s an optional cabin with a single berth abaft the engine room. Owner-operators can use the crew space for stowage.

The contemporary feel of the belowdecks area carries into the salon, which has a dark oak sole contrasting dramatically with lighter-tone gray zebrawood on the cabinetry. Indirect lighting and brass strips accent the cabinetry and soften the look. Again, I felt welcomed on such a gray day.

Her salon is set up for social gatherings with a sofa for two directly abaft the starboard-side helm station, which itself has two seats. Across is C-shaped seating with a fixed table, keeping everyone in the conversation. With seven people on board during my sea trial, I could see that the seating arrangement worked well.

While sunshine was nonexistent, the main-deck interior was bright thanks to nearly 360 degrees of glass: two forward windows, eyebrow-shaped side windows that stretch the length of the superstructure, and a glass door that, when open, connects the covered aft deck and salon. All that glass, from the outside, enhances the 55’s relatively low profile too. (The yacht’s air draft is 17 feet 3 inches to the top of the radar arch.)

The Azimut 55’s L-shaped galley aft is geared for serious meal prep with a four-burner Miele electric cooktop, Miele microwave/convection oven, Dometic stand-up refrigerator and freezer, and two sinks. When the cockpit glass doors are open, the galley becomes the social hub at cocktail hour.

Out on the water, the wicked weather created a quick, short chop, but the 55 dispatched the sea with malice. She has a sabrelike bow for slicing through a seaway. Her planing hull form’s deadrise transitions to a moderate 21 degrees amidships and then to 12 degrees at the transom, creating a stable ride.

It’s a ride made even more stable thanks to the standard Zipwake trim system, which uses interceptor tabs to adjust automatically for pitch and roll. The setup is plug-and-play, and the interceptors mount flat to the hull, adjusting up or down as needed. The system also minimizes performance-sapping drag. To make it all work, an owner plugs the boat’s specifications (length overall, beam, displacement) into the Zipwake system. The software does the rest. I’ve run several boats with Zipwake in a variety of sea conditions and found it intuitive and effective.

Combine the 55’s steady ride with smooth handling from the standard SeaStar electric steering, and you get confidence-inspiring wheel time. It’s sporty wheel time too, with the 55’s 800 hp i6 MAN diesels. These diesels, the only engine option, gave my test yacht an average top hop of 30.5 knots at 2,350 rpm, which is within 50 rpm of the engines’ top-end rating. At a 2,000 rpm cruise, the 55 jogged along the brine at about 23.5 knots with 25 percent fuel and 75 percent water in the tanks.

Running at cruise speed, the MANs burned 56.8 gph. Considering a 10 percent reserve on the yacht’s 673-gallon fuel tank, the yacht has an effective range of around 251 nautical miles. At wide-open throttle, fuel burn climbs to 81 gph and range drops to 228 nautical miles.

The relentless rain prevented me from running the 55 from the flybridge, where there is a second helm station beneath a sunroof-equipped hardtop. I suspect it would be a fun place to be at speed on a sunny day.

Six teak-covered steps provide access to the flybridge, which is also a party spot with C-shaped seating and a teak table to starboard, and a sun pad forward of it. Across is the single-seat helm. The flybridge overhang extends over the cockpit, increasing deck space aft for a table and a couple of settees for sundowners with friends.

There would be no top-deck sundowners on this day, but the Azimut 55 performed solidly in the slop, always felt sturdy underfoot, boasted an impressive array of new technologies and had a next-generation aesthetic for the builder’s seven-model flybridge line. It’s a combination that should shine in any weather.

The 55’s teak-covered, hydraulic swim platform measures about 49 square feet and accommodates a Williams 285 Turbojet tender. There’s a retractable swim ladder, and a passerelle is available for boarding when Med-moored.

Broad Range

Azimut’s flybridge fleet consists of seven models ranging from 42 to 80 feet length overall. The builder also has the three-model S collection from 60 to 77 feet. The S collection has a similar hull form to the Azimut 55, but in an express-cruiser layout. Azimut calls its smaller express-cruiser series the Atlantis collection, from 34 to 51 feet. For explorers, there’s the four-model, trawler-looking Magellano fleet from 43 to 76 feet. And then there’s the five-model Grande range from 87 feet to 144 feet for those looking to make the mega-yacht move.

Outdoor Matters

Azimut says the idea behind the 55’s foredeck sun-pad space was to create a cocoon feeling. It’s an idea that is best illustrated when the retractable Bimini top is up for some shade from the rays. The sun pad’s backrest is adjustable to form a chaise lounge too.

Azimut Yachts opened for business in 1969, and is headquartered in Avigliana, Torino, Italy. With its own facilities and the Benetti yards acquisition in 1985, Azimut owns yards in 4 regions. The Avigliana yard presents a boat production capacity of 270. Savona has a Service and Delivery center. Viareggio has the Azimut-Benetti production and refitting center and the Benetti yard. The Azimut-Benetti Production Center is in Fano, creating GRP hulls. The yards can hold different sizes of yachts, from 39 feet to 165 feet in length, though yachts produced are 39 to 98 feet in length. Azimut also offers customers the opportunity of chartering of their own boats though preferred dealers. The latest launch is the flagship 116, a magnificent 35m motoryacht designed by Stefano Righini. The president of Azimut Yachts is Paolo Vitelli, who started his company in Turin, Italy, The Benetti shipyard, based in Viareggio had been owned by the Benetti family since its foundation in 1873 and in 1985 was taken over by Azimut. The yard had earned an exceptional reputation as the producer of yachts in classical lines, fitted out with luxury interiors. In 1994, inspired by the automotive sector, and after stringent test done by skilled engineers, Azimut introduced the frameless window to the market. Thanks to a special elastic paste - capable of expanding its length eight times - the lateral windows were glued directly onto the fibreglass, without the need of any steel frame. The result was an unprecedented leak-proof design. In 2001, the new modern elegant industrial complex of Avigliana was opened. Built on an area of 165.000 sq.yards, of which 55.000 sq.yards are covered. It was been designed specifically to host the most advanced techniques and equipment for the production of yachts up to 68’, with tight quality control in every step of the process. In June 2003, on the occasion of the new logo introduction ceremony, Azimut presented to the press the new Viareggio plant. Based in the heart of Viareggio harbour, this area of 52,000 sq.yards positioned on the water’s edge to allow the Company to significantly extend the current operations. The facilities were totally re-built, the project lay-out being in line, in term of style, rationality and technological equipments, with the other Azimut – Avigliana shipyard.

How was the Azimut shipyard founded?

The Azimut shipyard was founded in 1969 in Italy. It was founded by Paolo Vitelli. In fact, he started out as an importer of pleasure boats in the United States before returning to Italy to found his own shipyard. Vitelli started the production of boats in fiberglass reinforced polyester. Thus, he and quickly attracted the attention of international customers thanks to the quality of his designs and finishes.

What were the first Azimut boats?

The first boat model produced by Azimut is the AZ 43′ Bali. This model was followed by the AZ 46′ Targa, which was a great success with customers.

In the 1980s, Azimut began to focus more on the production of luxury yachts. The yard launched models such as th e AZ 80′ Carat and the AZ 105′ Grande. Both were well received by clients and critics alike.

Since then, Azimut has continued to develop its line of luxury yachts, introducing new models on a regular basis and establishing a reputation for quality and innovation in the boating industry.

Development of the shipyard

In the 1990s, Azimut expanded its business by acquiring several other Italian shipyards, including Benetti. The goal was to strengthen its position in the luxury shipbuilding industry.

In the early 2000s, Azimut began to focus on innovation, introducing cutting-edge technologies such as carbon composite construction technology and the gyroscopic stabilization platform.

Over the past decade, Azimut has continued to expand its product line, introducing models such as the AZ 66 Fly, AZ 77S and AZ 25 Metri , while strengthening its presence in key markets around the world
