The worlds of the desert festival, Burning Man, and superyachting may not seem like a natural fit, but the owners and designers of 184-foot Galaxy successfully made those worlds collide—and, in the process, showed how yacht design can be a lot more creative, and fast.

The five-month refit of Galaxy —a 2005 Benetti —was not only unusually speedy for a superyacht, but signals the emergence of a new kind of yachting, a clean-slate design that gave the owners the fantasyland interior that they wanted. Typically, most interior refits involve only cosmetic changes, and from the exterior, Galaxy looks almost painfully cookie-cutter. But inside, the bold, bespoke look may inspire others to follow their wildest dreams, rather than staying safe with a conventional design.

Njord by Bergman Design House created the eclectic interior. The refit was done by Monaco Marine and GM Group at the La Ciotat yard in France. “ Galaxy isn’t just another white superyacht on the French Riviera,” says Sarah Colbon, co-founder of the London-based design firm. “The yacht is its own out-of-world destination that touches all your senses and excites and embraces you with its energy.”

Burning Man is an annual gathering that takes place in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert. It’s a mix of art, music and free expression that embraces individual creativity, no matter what that looks like. And it can look pretty wild. At the end of the festival is the ritual burning of “The Man,” a tall effigy made of wood. Galaxy ‘s owners, a leading American video-games developer and his partner, are frequent attendees. They were inspired by the festival and a love of entertaining, says Colbon, to create an “alternate universe.”

The expansive main deck has been transformed into a giant “floating private member’s club,” with bespoke décor and alternatively moody and brightly colored artwork. “The Thinker” by contemporary artist Joseph Klibansky reimagines Rodin’s classic sculpture as an astronaut, and there are also paintings by Camille Hannah and wall coverings by digital artist Dylan Cole, known for Disney’s Avatar and Maleficent .

The wallpaper is Cole’s first static project. “He’s never done this before, but he appreciated the concept of Galaxy and loved the sound of the owners,” says Colbon. “So he agreed to create the owners’ own Avatar world onboard.” If you look closely, you’ll spot secret creatures and “ET” aliens hidden in the otherworldly scenes that Cole created.

While the main deck is a nightclub that would look right at home on some alien world, the upper deck is designed for the opposite effect. It features a lounge and dining space for 12 guests which is “super calm,” according to the designer.

“What’s wonderful about Galaxy is you can switch it on and off,” says Colbon. “You can go from the ultimate club space with RGB lighting, party vibes and a DJ stand, to the serene upper deck where you can connect with your senses.”

When they’re done for the day, guests can retire to suites which have been named and styled after other planets. “We’ve designed Venus and Saturn with beautiful light pearls and golds, while Mars has these striking earthy red tones,” says Colbon. “Rather than being gimmicky, we’ve respected the colors and sensibilities of the planets.”

The master suite is even more bespoke: The bed’s headboard is designed with a metal bronze effect with tiny LED lights that create a star-gazing platform. The owners’ star signs also come through as the brighter lights, while their friends’ star signs are dimmer lights. On the ceiling is the owners’ favorite constellation.

The centerpieces of the yacht are the stairwell and elevator areas, hand-painted with an ombre, galaxy-toned effect.

Galaxy is filled with special features, including adjustable RGB lighting and smart materials like a specially engineered flooring. Colbon says that’s a world first for a superyacht. “The tight ripple effect stimulates the nerve endings on your feet when you walk on it and triggers endorphins to make you super relaxed,” she says. “It also looks like the ocean with tiny waves crashing on top of each other.”

The crew thought it was crazy to use this surface as flooring, says Colbon. “But they understand now.”

The five-month turnaround also seemed like a stretch, especially since it included a full exterior paint job, new name plates and a spa. And then there was the fantastical interior.

“This yacht shows how design can be done differently in every way,” says Colbon. “It ranges from a new type of owner to the ways that collaborations between the designers and yard can actually change the whole refit process. I think Galaxy is going to really shine.”

The Luxurious Galaxy Yacht Interior: A Monaco Marine Masterpiece

Galaxy Yacht’s Interior spans 300 feet of sheer elegance, offering an unmatched level of grandeur and spaciousness. Upon stepping foot inside, one is immediately captivated by the harmony between modernity and timelessness.

The design team at Monaco Marine has meticulously crafted each aspect of the interior, ensuring that it meets the highest standards of luxury.

The main saloon is a masterpiece of exquisite taste and attention to detail. Lavish materials, such as fine marble and handcrafted woods, adorn the interiors, creating a sense of warmth and richness. The fusion of these elements creates an ambience that is both inviting and captivating. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide breathtaking views of the open ocean, ensuring that passengers remain connected to the natural beauty of the surroundings at all times.

At the heart of Galaxy Yacht interior’s refit is main taproom which is conceptualised as the yacht’s private member's club. The wallpaper is designed by Dylan Cole, the art director of Avatar, the Academy Award-winning, reproducing a futuristic forest, while a DJ cell can be set up against a background of backlit agate.

A central focus of her interior is her state-of-the-art entertainment system, allowing guests to indulge in a cinematic experience while cruising the seas. Every aspect of the entertainment system has been carefully curated, guaranteeing a seamless blend of technology and comfort. From advanced audio-visual equipment to an extensive library of films and music, every amenity has been designed to meet the diverse tastes of discerning guests.

The sky lounge has also seen a transformative change, but then the design detail was about creating a lighter, lustrous space where the proprietor and his guests can relax and spend time together.

The yacht’s 6 staterooms offer an oasis of serenity for 12 guests. Each suite, named after a planet, boasts a unique design, characterized by sumptuous furnishings and unparalleled luxury. Rich fabrics and plush bedding create a haven of comfort for passengers to unwind and rejuvenate.

The proprietor's suite takes the cosmic theme one step further with personalised star signs etched into the headboard behind the bed.

En-suite bathrooms feature the finest fixtures and amenities, ensuring that guests experience nothing but the best during their time aboard.

For those seeking relaxation and wellness, the yacht features a spa and wellness centre that rivals the most exclusive resorts. Guests can indulge in a range of rejuvenating treatments and therapies, overseen by skilled professionals dedicated to providing a holistic wellness experience. The spa is complemented by a fully equipped fitness centre, ensuring that guests can maintain their health and well-being while cruising.

Galaxy offers restful outdoor areas

Beyond the opulent interiors, the Galaxy Yacht features expansive deck spaces for ultimate outdoor enjoyment. Galaxy Superyacht Refit is Unveiled

Njord by Bergman Design House , the superyacht interior architecture and design studio co-founded by Marie Soliman, Albin Berglund and Sarah Colbon, is delighted to present their latest project, a refit 56m Benetti Galaxy. Using the highest levels of eco-friendly design and technique, the yachting arm of London’s award-winning interior design studio Bergman Design House, Njord by Bergman Design House is spearheading a new era of sustainable superyacht design.

Galaxy was completed by Njord by Bergman Design House in February 2022 after a record breaking five-month refit, a project that would typically take a minimum of 18 months. Designed with cosmic inspiration to fit the client’s desire to create a spaceship to entertain yet also call home, the yacht’s interior has been completely transformed including: a private nightclub, multi-sensory saloon, meditation and wellness space, a cinema room and private music studio, touch-and-go helipad, and a private party deck. Refit in record breaking time, Galaxy is the first ever superyacht to have a private member’s club designed onboard that turns into a multi-sensory space and cinema lounge. The luxurious cosmic superyacht was redelivered to her owner last month, ready to transform anyone who steps onboard to another universe.

Unveiling Galaxy by Njord by Bergman Design House

Albin, Marie and Sarah are considered movers and shakers in the design and superyacht industry – inspiring and innovating the world of luxury as they push boundaries in floating hotel design. Galaxy is the perfect representation of their creative work and ability to surpass their clients’ wildest dreams – including all onboard bespoke designs.

“ Working with Njord by Bergman Design House has been an incredible journey. They truly understood what we wanted and delivered it in record time and on a grander scale than we could have ever imagined. The design exceeded our expectations and the day we got the 'keys' to Galaxy it became our home and not our yacht because of all the changes that made it ours. Our favourite room is the avatar room, where we regularly throw dance parties and the snug. We climb in there, shut the door, and the world just disappears” commented Galaxy’s owner.

The Project

The Galaxy project was a refit broken down into phases. This allowed the client to live and enjoy their new yacht while Njord simultaneously worked their magic on the interior design. Phase one of the project took place in Spring 2021 and saw the addition of new rugs, artwork, exterior seating, cushions and a general up-styling of the interior so the client could enjoy a summer season onboard whilst living in a space that felt more like home. This allowed the owner to live in the space and give feedback to Njord first-hand on which areas they found most comfortable and which they used less, all of which helped to inform the second, full refit phase.  

Every piece placed on board during phase one flowed into phase two, ensuring nothing was wasted. Once the concept was agreed, a full interior refit of the main guest areas took place alongside exterior styling, giving the yacht a new lease of life. With a goal to complete the project within five months, this would be the shortest time frame in which any superyacht has ever undergone a refit. Together with the trust and can-do attitude of the owners, the Monaco Marine shipyard and the formidable crew, Galaxy has done just that.  

Commenting on the Galaxy project, Njord co-founder Sarah Colbon said: " Galaxy is no longer just another white Superyacht gracing the ocean along the French Riviera, she has been transformed into the private owners’ own floating universe, a home which encapsulates their lifestyle and a design that has never been done before onboard a yacht of this kind. Galaxy is now a destination, a marvel that touches all your body's senses and excites and embraces you with its energy during each step you take onboard. Galaxy will now transport her new owners into another dimension.” 

Notable Design Features  

• A wall covering by Dylan Cole , the artist renowned for creating the world of Disney's Avatar, Maleficent and Superman. Designing the clients’ own ‘Pandora World’ aboard Galaxy, this once-in-a-lifetime commission was the first ever yacht project Cole has created. The wall covering covers the whole main saloon, which serves as a relaxation and yoga space by day, and the owners’ very own private members club deck for entertaining by night.  
• ‘The Thinker’ sculpture by Joseph Kibansky is one of the most iconic sculpture pieces onboard Galaxy and will be the centrepiece of the whole experience. Kibansky’s ‘Baby We Made It’ turtles are onboard already and are a firm favourite!
• All materials used are from natural elements such as rock crystal and fully sustainable fabrics. The wood used in the flooring was specially selected to mimic the sensation of waves beneath the feet and enhance the senses. The furniture is completely organic, designed by Njord and produced by BlackBerg Collection.
• Exterior-wise, Njord have rebranded Galaxy’s look and feel from the nameplate logo and lifted youth into her exterior styling, with black painted mast and line accents alongside a full paint of the hull to breathe new life into her. 
• Throughout the yacht, Njord have many special finishes and functional acoustic panels and fabrics, which are all aesthetically pleasing. From the most beautiful stones, to broken compresses and coloured glass to bespoke fabrics and veneers. The waved CNC cut timber flooring is another notable feature that stimulates the senses as guests onboard Galaxy walk on it. Every piece of furniture onboard the yacht has been made bespoke for the client with beauty, ergonomics and durability in mind.

Motor Yacht

Motor yacht Galaxy is a smart and sleek luxury superyacht built in 2005 by Italian shipyard Benetti. With a steel hull designed in-house and aluminium superstructure, she features exterior design and interior layout by Stefano Natucci. This attractive vessel measures 56 metres and can accommodate up to 12 guests. The actual interior decoration was completed by the owner’s personal designer who has also completed projects in his Melbourne and Los Angeles homes.

Galaxy is the very first superyacht to be produced by Benetti’s new shipyard Livorno and was specifically designed to accommodate the Australian owner’s family but is also available for selective charter. One of her defining design features is the use of exotic woods in her interior stylings, using oak, eucalyptus, sycamore, ash, pear, and Burma teak parquet to furnish her interior.

The luxury motor yacht received her name from Valentina Tei, the daughter of Roberto Tei, the longest-serving worker of Benetti’s newly re-christened custom yacht complex. The vessel is both Lloyd’s and MCA classified and is powered by twin 1,850 horsepower Caterpillars.

Passengers board the motor yacht by a hydraulically-activated ladder on starboard to the generous aft deck where a large built-in sofa dominates the area. Her Flying Bridge, the design of the owner, is arguably one of the yacht’s greatest features which aside from a Sun deck with five sunning lounges includes a bar area, dining and snack table serviced by dumbwaiter and all this is convertible into a helipad.

The dining table is generous enough to seat 12 at once and is situated under the permanent Bimini Sat-Nav top. From here, guests have direct access to the extensive gym and teak plank-line Jacuzzi whirlpool protected by Plexiglas wind screens.

Featuring a dedicated crew and a wide range of onboard facilities and water toys, Galaxy is also an excellent charter yacht. The luxury yacht cruises comfortably at 14 knots while a crew of 13 ensures the needs of charter guests are met.

Amongst her six cabins are two double staterooms and two twin cabins on the lower deck; a VIP stateroom on the upper deck; and luxury owner’s suite on the main deck with en suite Jacuzzi and VIP office. The owner’s suite is split over two levels, the main deck offering an office, and his and hers baths and dressing areas. The owner’s salon is forward and raised half a deck.

Boasting a full range of exciting entertainment options, Galaxy features a wine cellar, gym, Jacuzzi, and an all-level elevator among her extensive list of amenities. You will also find onboard an upper deck Sky Lounge with 180-degree views, gaming tables and bar, and an indoor cinema.

The luxury motor yacht is equipped with an entire armada of water toys to provide endless hours of entertainment during any yacht charter. Water toys sail boats, kayaks, a windsurfer, wave runners, skis, and snorkel gear. For entertainment back on the yacht deck, Galaxy carries Satellite TV, and a book, DVD and CD library.

The yacht sails the Mediterranean, both East and West in the summer months.

The superyacht pair were launched in Riga on May 10 and both went on to reach their designed top speed of 30 knots on their sea trials. Their futuristic design and sleek silver exteriors by Jean-Jacques Coste , which Latitude Yachts described as “resembling a spacecraft from Hollywood blockbusters”, call to mind other notable multihull superyachts , such as  Adastra  — the futuristic trimaran from McConaghy Boats  — and current round-the-world record holder Ady Gil . The interiors were designed by Latitude Yachts and Jean-Jacques Coste and feature an owner’s cabin and two guest cabins. Speaking in May, Valdis Irbe, co-owner of Latitude Yachts, said: “This was a great challenge for me and I was brave enough to agree to bring this project to life. “I would like to thank the customer for giving his credence and opportunity to carry out this project of immense complexity. They have no analogues in size – they are the biggest trimarans in the world.” This claim is somewhat debatable, however, as Australian yard North West Bay Ships launched a 61.4m trimaran White Rabbit Echo in 2005. Latitude Yachts' 53m trimaran project has been under development for nearly 30 months and the dual launch propels the Latvian yard into the superyacht spotlight, although they do not currently plan to display the trimarans at any upcoming boat shows. Founded in 2006, the yard was previously best known for building five 60 metre restaurant boats that are based in Moscow. Built from a GRP and carbonfibre composite, the new Latitude trimarans are propelled by twin 2,600hp engines.
