Indonesia launches second Klewang-class 63-meter stealth trimaran fast attack craft

The ship was built as a replacement to the first ship of the class, the Klewang (625), which was destroyed by a fire before it was commissioned to the TNI-AL in 2012. Due to experience with the destruction of the Klewang, North Sea Boats have made improvements in the ship design and materials used for construction, which now feature carbon fiber composite that is said to be fire resistant. The use of composite materials for the hull construction allows for a high specific strength, light weight, and excellent fatigue-resistance and corrosion-resistance. The ship is 63 meters long, has a maximum width of 16 meters, a displacement of 245 tons, and a crew of 30 officers and sailors. It is powered by four 1,800-horsepower MAP V12 diesel engines, allowing a speed of more than 28 knots, a cruising speed of 16 knots, and a maximum range of 2,000 nautical miles at 16 knots. In 2019, PT Lundin and Saab entered an agreement to supply the combat systems, sensors and weapons for the original boat, but it remains to be seen if this would continue with the second ship of the class. At the moment, it was announced the ship would be armed with a 30mm autocannon, and 12.7mm heavy machine guns, and will have an 11-meter rigid-hull inflatable boat (RHIB) as standard equipment. Indonesia’s New Fast-Attack Trimaran Combines Speed and Stealth
INDONESIA — The Indonesian navy commissioned its first stealth trimaran fast attack craft, KRI Golok (688), at Surabaya on the island of Java on Jan. 14. The ship was built by PT Lundin at Banyuwangi, on Java’s eastern tip, from composite fiber materials.
The commissioning ceremony took place at the naval base in Surabaya, East Java. Also commissioned at the ceremony was the lead ship in a new class of hospital ships KRI dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo (991),
Speaking at the ceremony, Adm. Yudo Morgono, chief of the Indonesian navy, said, “This type of ship is not only important to support naval operations as part of the task force and the navy fleet, but is a tangible manifestation of the navy’s commitment to modernizing defense equipment in humanitarian operations.”
The term “golok” refers to a cutting took, similar to a machete, which can serve as a tool or weapon. During the naming ceremony last August, Margono said the composite material offers high strength, light weight, excellent fatigue resistance and is virtually corrosion free. The Indonesian navy sees the trimaran design and material as a prototype development purposes.
“With its high speed and high destructive power, it is hoped that this ship will be able to carry out the hit and run fast missile boat tactic,” Margono said.
The ship has not yet been fitted with weapons, but is able to mount a gun up to 76mm and can carry up to eight antiship missiles, such as the RBS 15, Naval Strike Missile, Harpoon or Exocet.
According to a video prepared by PT Lundin, the ship has greatly reduced radar, infrared, acoustic and magnetic signatures. The weapons and RHIB are concealed inside the structure or discretely shaped to maintain stealth.
PT Lundin said the composite and carbon fiber foam-sandwich material — fabricated with fire-resistant vinyl ester resin — creates a structure that is much lighter than steel or aluminum, resin but has similar fire-resistance and ballistics protection properties and superior protection from blast and underwater explosions.
According to an Indonesian navy statement, the fast attack craft has an overall length of 205 feet (62.53 meters); a 52.5-foot (16 meter) beam; a 61-foot mast height (18.7 meters), and a current displacement of 245 tons. The ship will be heavier after the installation of weapons. The trimaran can achieve speeds up to 30 knots, and can cruise at 16 knots for 2,000 nautical miles. The ship and its 25-person crew will have an endurance of 40 days. Additional personnel, such as special forces or a humanitarian assistance landing party can also be carried.
The wave-piercing trimaran can cut through waves instead of ride over them, maintain higher speeds and heavier sea states. An enclosed hangar on the stern can carry a 12-meter RHIB.
The trimaran, with four water jets, is well suited for Indonesia’s archipelagic operations. The FAC is extremely maneuverable, has a shallow draft and can literally back up onto a beach — where its radar signature becomes indistinguishable from the land — waiting for targets to engage.
Golok is powered by four 1800 HP MAN V12 diesel engines, each connected to a Marine Jet Power 550 waterjets. In a company video, PT Lundin refers to the trimaran as the “ultimate in high-speed missile boats.”

Indonesia’s North Sea Boats (also known as PT Lundin Industry Invest) launched the first of four new Klewang-class trimaran missile boats for the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) on Aug. 31, 2012 at its Banyuwangi facility.
The 63-meter long, wave piercing trimaran, also known as the X3K, is built of composites using infused vinylester carbon fiber-cored sandwich materials for light weight, strength, and good corrosion resistance, as well as low-observability from reduced signatures. It also has an integrated mast system.
The trimaran project started about 5 years ago, according to John Lundin, CEO of North Sea Boats. Lundin, who comes from a family of shipbuilders in Sweden, moved to Indonesia several years ago to set up businesses including North Sea Boats, which was started in 2003.

The Klewang-class trimaran was designed in partnership with New Zealand based naval architects LOMOcean Design Ltd. over a period of 24 months. The X3K concept draws from the LOMOcean Design’s 24-meter Earthrace (later Ady Gil), holder of the record for the fastest circumnavigation of the globe by a power boat. Construction of the Klewang took about two-and-a-half years.
The X3K has been designed to Germanischer Lloyd structural design rules. In particular, the structural design and approval methodologies were tailored specifically for the unusual geometry of a large, wave-piercing trimaran. The ship has been designed to operate in sea states with 6-meter high waves.
What is remarkable about this project is that this is the first time such an advanced ship has been produced in a developing country. North Sea Boats says the use of carbon foam sandwich composites on this scale in naval application is “unprecedented” outside of Scandinavia and is representative of the current state of the art in both maritime composites structural engineering and production technology. A large portion of the materials were supplied by Gurit, through their marine division in New Zealand, SP – High Modulus. While some of the Gurit core came from China, the carbon material was sourced from various countries.
Not having a highly skilled local labor force, NSB adopted the design and production technology to match locally available labor skill levels. For instance, the ship uses a large number of flat panels and high volume vacuum infusion systems and CNC milling to mitigate risks and ensure requisite production quality and repeatability.
Klewang has an overall length of 63 meters, a waterline length of 61 meters, a beam of 16 meters, and a draft of 1.2 meters at a displacement of 219 tonnes.

The ship is powered by four MJP 550 waterjets – two located on the outriggers and two on the center hull – driven by four MAN V12 engines rated at 1800 horsepower each. Top speed is as much as 35 knots, although cruising speed is 22 knots. Range is in excess of 2000 nautical miles at 16 knots.
Internally, the ship has three decks. Accommodation is provided for up to twenty-nine, including a special forces team that can deploy using a ramp-launched 11-meter X2K high speed RHIB capable of 50 knots.
NSB says that the exact configuration of the combat system is still classified, but did disclose that Klewang will have a “turn-key system’ delivered by CSOC and CPMIEC China, including a rapid fire close in weapons system (CIWS), combat control and missile systems.”
It is widely speculated that at least four and possibly eight C-705 anti- ship missiles with a range of 120 kilometers will be fitted in enclosed launchers on the superstructure. Available graphics show a superstructure-mounted director and a small caliber CIWS in a stealthy turret similar to weapons fitted on China’s Type 022 missile catamarans.

NSB adds that other antiship weapons such as Penguin, Exocet and larger caliber guns up to 57 mm can be mounted on the superstructure without affecting stability.
Klewang will undergo additional outfitting for the next four weeks, after which extensive sea trials and tests will commence in October. Final operational clearance is expected sometime in 2013.
NSB is under contract to deliver four of these trimarans by 2014. However, NSB officials declined to comment on the status of the other three ships.
Indonesian media report that each ship costs about Rp 114 billion ($12.5 million), although this is very likely the cost of the ship less combat systems. NSB won’t comment on this either. According to TNI AL Admiral Sayid Anwar, the Klewang , which is to be based in Surabaya with the service’s Eastern Fleet, is the first large composite warship in the Indonesian Navy.
Along with the Klewang -class trimarans, Indonesia is also pursuing several indigenous programs for a series of 40-meter and 60-meter fast missile boats known locally as kapal cepat rudal (KCR). PT Palindo has delivered two Clurit-class KCR 40 missile boats, and is constructing one if not two more. PT PAL in Surabaya has an order for three larger 60-meter KCR 60-class missile boats. However, being that the project is still at a design stage, PT PAL has not yet announced delivery dates.
These programs are part of Indonesia’s strategic drive to build up a minimum essential force structure for its armed forces by 2024 while simultaneously developing and growing the country’s indigenous defense industry.

Choosing the right beam for a multihull
QUESTION: When assessing or designing a trimaran or catamaran, what guidance can you give to guide the choice of beam ?

ANSWER: An interesting question as we do see quite a variation on existing boats.
First, let’s call the Overall Beam to Length ratio B/L and the individual hull length to hull beam, L/b .
Here are a few basics to consider as inputs to your overall beam choice.
* More beam gives more transverse stability, permitting a powerful rig to drive a boat faster, but also, excessive beam tends to lower diagonal stability so increasing pitch-poling. More beam also tends to allow more fore & aft pitching.
* More beam requires stronger connecting beams (called akas on trimarans), aggravated by the two hulls potentially being now be in different waves
* More beam can be a problem in a marina where space is increasingly limited
* Folding trimarans can be limited in beam due to geometric space when folded, such as:
Transverse folding system (Farrier etc) are limited by how far down the hulls can be managed when folded.
Swing-arm folding is limited by the overall length increase when folded.
Hinge & latch systems are limited by what height and weight can be lifted
* Less beam allows a boat to heel more, thereby reducing sail exposure to side wind.
* Less beam brings the hulls closer together, reducing beam strength requirements and weight, but potentially adding to resistance from hull-flow interaction.
* Hulls with a high L/b ratio can be closer together than hulls with a low L/b ratio if overall stability permits.
* As smaller boats need proportionally more displacement due to crew and structural weight, they cannot have a very high L/b ratio as they then have insufficient displacement.

So what do all these points finally lead to ? Well, let’s see.
For Catamarans , the sweet spot seems to be with a L/B of 2 to 2.1.
If the beam is excessively increased, pitching and reduced diagonal stability (see dwg) start to become an issue and when such boats are lengthened to make their L/B slightly above 2, they generally become faster and have less negative issues ... but over about 2.3, their relatively lower transverse stability then starts to kick back.
If the beam is decreased, stability drops quickly and one may start to also add wave interference between the hulls unless the boat is very light with slim hulls.
Of course, this is a simplification of things as top weight, windage, wing clearance, center of gravity, sail plan, etc etc .. all have their effects, though individually less than the important L/B ratio.
Let me give you an example of how other design criteria can move things from what may initially seem the ideal.
Beam also has a huge effect on stability. But the designer Jan Gougeon (then of West Systems) was an inventive guy, so he approached this design in a non-conventional way. To achieve his first criteria .. “a fast non demountable weekend catamaran” , he needed to address the obvious lack of stability in other ways. A low rig could work with low weight, that would then allow very slim, fast hulls. Then he added water ballast to help keep the windward side down …. and finally, a masthead float to prevent the boat from turning turtle, where she would stay like virtually all other multihulls do IF that happens. In this case, it was rather often as unfortunately, most sailors were not ready to adapt to this new way of sailing and with capsizes happening too quickly for most, only a dozen or so were sold. But I did get to try the boat and felt the concept did work in the sense that the boat IS fast and also comfortable & dry, as with such long, narrow hulls, there is very little disturbance of the surface water so spray is minimal and even if the hulls are pretty close, they are too slim to create any significant cross-hull wake- interference.
To keep the rig low (mast is shorter than the boat), she uses 2 foresails that can be furled up fast. Those that still own one have learned to understand them and can enjoy their merits … but this is not a boat with reserve stability for sudden gusts, so you need to sail this boat more like a race dinghy and also reduce sail early. This further means that sailing at night when you cannot see squall warnings in the sky is best avoided unless the stars are truly out for you.
But it IS an example of thinking WAY outside the box .. even if the result is not for everyone. So ‘sweetspot L/B ratios’ do not necessarily mean they give the only solution .. just that you, as a designer, also need to work differently around the rest of the design to solve the issues you might create if you are well outside the norm.
The lesson here is: If you choose to go outside the norm, fully understand the implications and work around them. You cannot ignore them and still expect success. If the designer failed at all with this radical G32 design, it was in not sufficiently educating new owners of the different sailing nuances needed to keep the boat on its feet.
For Trimarans, my studies and observations show that the preferred B/L ratio changes with boat size.
To some degree, the same effect on diagonal stability (as for Cats) will occur with excessive beam, but with a trimaran, the two hulls in the water will be closer so it’s also important to allow for good flow between them. So as very large racing tris can have slimmer hulls due to great length and low weight, they can have proportionally lower B/L ratios than smaller boats that need proportionally fatter central hulls just to support the displacement they need. After all, we cannot just change things in proportion, because the weight of things (such as crew, structure etc) will not automatically get smaller for a smaller boat .. in fact it proportionally and typically, gets greater! So smaller multihulls can often be harder to design than larger ones, where you have more space and volume to work with. The above observations led me to plot data from good boats and create this simple little formula that fits their B/L curve pretty well.
Here is what the curve gives as a recommended B/L ratio for a sailing trimaran
(Sailing Trimaran) B/L ratio = 1.48 ÷ (L ^ 0.21) [ Length L in feet ].
While this may initially look complex to calculate for some, it’s very easy with the right help. Download the Mobi Calculator on your phone or tablet. You can then add the expression x n to your basic calculator by first hitting the 3 dots [ ... ] that brings you to the Scientific Options, and then clicking on [ x n ] that will add this feature to your basic calculator. You can now enter the formula exactly as written, typing 1.48 ÷ ( your L value , and then x n and finally 0.21 and the closing bracket ) and then ‘ = ‘.
If you enter say L = 17 , it will give you a B/L ratio of 0.816, closely matching a W17 , while for an L of 100 ft, it will give you a B/L of only 0.562, closely matching a big ocean racing tri like Sodeb’O.
While of course you can go outside the calculated ratio, IMHO you should have a very good reason and specific justification for a deviation of more than 15% either way. Use the list at the beginning of this article to justify your change.
For both Tris and Cats, there may be other factors that will change your design, but this gives a good starting and target point that’s based on both practical and justified design needs.

ADDED NOTE ... re MOTOR MULTIS
As noted, the above ratios refer to Sailing Craft. Without the heeling force of a sail, pure motor-tris and cats are not bound by the same needs.
A motor catamaran can have less beam, with a clean flow between the hulls now taking prominence over high beam for sailing stability, so L/B ratios of 2.5 to 3 are now more appropriate.
Hulls may need to be asymmetrical with a straighter side on the inside to avoid unfavorable hull wave interaction between them.
For a powered trimaran , overall beam should also be reduced or the motion will become uncomfortable. (With a sailing tri, the boat is heeled with one ama out, but with a motor tri, all three hulls are immersed so wave action on the boat would be too severe if the boat is too wide) . Amas (pontoons) now need to be narrow but deep, as a slow gentle roll of slightly greater amplitude, is more comfortable than a short quick one. These amas (now only 40-50% of the main hull length), seem best with their center about 60-70% aft of the main hull length and need to be of fine section and relatively deep with the connecting bridge arched high above any waves, so that neither ama or aka-bridge will slam when re-entering a wave. L/b ratios of all 3 hulls can be at their most efficient, namely 13-16 at the waterline. The amas are now more like permanent training wheels and with a much longer central hull and no heeling force from sails, diagonal stability is no longer something to consider. Overall beam will depend on maintaining a clean flow between the main hull and the shorter slim amas, that need to extend well down into the water, so that motion is acceptable in waves. Typical overall B/L ratios might now be down around 0.4, becoming even less as boat design gets bigger, provided the center of gravity is kept low.

Ini Spesifikasi KRI Golok (688), Kapal Siluman Baru Milik TNI AL
Bisnis.com , JAKARTA - PT Lundin Industry Invest atau North Sea Boats, perusahaan dalam negeri yang memproduksi kapal dengan skala bisnis internasional, secara resmi meluncurkan KRI Golok (688) untuk TNI Angkatan Laut, di galangan kapal di Banyuwangi, Jawa Timur, pada Sabtu (21/8/2021).
Dilansir Navalnews.com , KRI Golok (688) merupakan kapal jenis siluman ( s tealth ) trimaran yang dapat digunakan untuk serangan cepat ( fast attack craft /FAC) oleh TNI AL.
Dalam seremoni peluncuran itu, Kepala Staf TNI Angkatan Laut Laksamana Yudo Margono menjelaskan bahwa trimaran merupakan kapal pertama yang dibuat dari material komposit yang memiliki keunggulan kekuatan spesifik yang tinggi, bobot yang lebih ringan, serta memiliki ketahanan lelah dan ketahanan korosi yang sangat baik.
Oleh karena itu, kapal ini dapat digunakan sebagai prototipe kapal trimaran, untuk tujuan pengembangan. Dalam kesempatan itu, dia juga menjelaskan nama KRI Golok.
"Arti filosofis dari penamaan kapal ini adalah KRI Golok-688 harus digunakan untuk melaksanakan tugas operasional yang diberikan, baik Operasi Militer untuk Perang (MOOW) maupun Operasi Militer Selain Perang (MOOTW). Dengan kecepatan tinggi dan daya rusak yang tinggi, diharapkan kapal ini dapat melakukan taktik tabrak lari cepat kapal rudal,” jelasnya.
Selain itu, Laksamana Margono mengungkapkan bahwa pembangunan kapal trimaran tentunya memiliki arti yang sangat strategis. Pasalnya. Lundin Industry Invest merupakan salah satu industri pertahanan nasional yang berhasil mengembangkan teknologi industri pertahanan untuk kepentingan nasional, dalam upaya mengurangi ketergantungan pada negara lain terkait pengadaan alutsista TNI AL di masa mendatang.

Adapun, menurut keterangan TNI AL, KRI Golok (688) memiliki total panjang (Loa) 62,53 meter, lebar 16 meter, tinggi kapal 18,7 meter dan berat 53,1 ton.
Kecepatan maksimum kapal ini adalah 28 knot dengan kecepatan jelajah 16 knot. Kapal tersebut dipersenjatai dengan meriam 30 mm dan meriam 12,7 mm dan mampu membawa 25 awak.
Menurut PT Lundin, FAC menggunakan desain trimaran wave piercing modern yang memungkinkan kapal untuk memotong gelombang dan memberikan stabilitas. Kombinasi fitur ini mengurangi pitching dan rolling , menciptakan platform senjata yang stabil, dan memungkinkan kapal untuk mempertahankan kecepatan rata-rata yang lebih tinggi dengan nyaman dan aman dalam kondisi buruk.
FAC memiliki karakteristik desain siluman dan menggabungkan fitur yang meminimalkan deteksi radar, infra-merah, akustik, dan magnetik. Sifat siluman lebih ditingkatkan karena tidak ada busur sudut terbalik untuk memantulkan sinyal radar, seperti yang terlihat pada bentuk lambung konvensional.
Persenjataan, termasuk rudal dan meriam angkatan laut , dan kapal RHIB berkecepatan tinggi 11 m, dalam posisi tersembunyo atau dibentuk untuk menyatu dengan profil suprastruktur.
Sebagai informasi, KRI Golok (688) merupakan kapal kedua tipe X3K yang dibangun oleh PT Lundin. Yang pertama , KRI Klewang, diluncurkan pada Agustus 2012.
Namun kapal kelas satu itu hancur sebulan kemudian, menyusul kebakaran yang terjadi saat fitting out . Awal tahun ini, pembuat kapal meluncurkan dan memulai uji coba laut dengan desain unik lainnya: Kapal Tempur X18 yang juga dikenal sebagai 'Tank Boat'.

KRI Golok-688 jenis KCR Trimaran memiliki spesifikasi panjang seluruhnya (Loa) 62,53 meter, lebar 16 meter, tinggi kapal dari draft 18,7 meter dengan bobot 53,1 ton.
Kecepatan maksimumnya 28 knots, kecepatan jelajah 16 knots, dan dipersenjatai meriam 30 mm serta senapan 12,7 mm.
Untuk daya tampungnya, KRI Golok-688 mampu mengangkut 25 anak buah kapal (ABK).

KCR Trimaran yang diberi nama KRI Golok-688 ini merupakan produk kapal pertama yang terbuat dari bahan composite.
KRI Golok-688 diklaim memiliki keunggulan kekuatan spesifik yang tinggi, lebih ringan, serta mempunyai ketahanan lelah dan ketahanan korosi yang sangat baik.
Oleh karena itu, kapal ini dapat dijadikan desain pengembangan sebagai prototipe kapal trimaran.

KRI Golok-688 miliki daya hancur besar
Yudo mengatakan, makna filosofis dari pemberian nama KRI Golok-688, yakni agar dapat digunakan untuk melaksanakan setiap tugas operasi yang diberikan.
Tugas operasi yang dimaksud meliputi Operasi Militer untuk Perang (OMP), maupun Operasi Militer Selain Perang (OMSP).
Dengan kecepatan yang tinggi dan daya hancurnya yang besar, imbuh Yudo, KRI Golok-688 diharapkan akan mampu melaksanakan taktik kapal cepat rudal , yaitu hit and run.
Dilansir dari koarmada2.tnial.mil.id , Yudo didampingi Pangkoarmada II Laksda TNI Dr Iwan Isnurwanto, meresmikan KRI Golok-688 di Dermaga Ujung Madura Koarmada II, Surabaya pada 14 Januari 2022.

KRI Golok-688 merupakan kapal jenis Kapal Cepat Rudal ( KCR) Trimaran. Ini merupakan produk kapal pertama yang terbuat dari bahan composite yang memiliki keunggulan kekuatan spesifik yang tinggi, lebih ringan, serta mempunyai ketahanan lelah dan ketahanan korosi yang sangat baik. Oleh karena itu, kapal ini dapat dijadikan desain pengembangan sebagai prototipe kapal trimaran.

Liputan6.com, Jakarta - TNI Angkatan Laut mendapat tambahan kekuatan kapal tempur dengan hadirnya Kapal Perang Republik Indonesia (KRI) Golok-688 . kapal ini diproduksi oleh PT Lundin Industry Invest Banyuwangi Jawa Timur.
Acara Shipnaming dan Launching KRI Golok-688 dilakukan oleh oleh Kepala Staf Angkatan Laut (Kasal) Laksamana TNI Yudo Margono, di Galangan PT Lundin Industry Invest , Banyuwangi, pada Sabtu 21 Agustus 2021.
KRI Golok-688 adalah kapal jenis Kapal Cepat Rudal (KCR) Trimaran. Kapal ini menjadi manifestasi penting dari pemenuhan kebutuhan Alat utama sistem senjata (Alutsista) TNI AL sesuai dengan perencanaan strategis yang telah ada termasuk luasnya wilayah perairan Indonesia yang perlu dijaga.

Yudo mengatakan, KCR Trimaran yang diberi nama KRI Golok-688 ini merupakan produk kapal pertama yang terbuat dari bahan composite yang memiliki keunggulan kekuatan spesifik yang tinggi, lebih ringan, serta mempunyai ketahanan lelah dan ketahanan korosi yang sangat baik.
Oleh karena itu, kapal ini dapat dijadikan desain pengembangan sebagai prototipe kapal trimaran.
“Makna filosofis dari pemberian nama kapal ini adalah hendaknya KRI Golok-688 dapat digunakan untuk melaksanakan setiap tugas operasi yang diberikan, baik Operasi Militer untuk Perang (OMP), maupun Operasi Militer Selain Perang (OMSP)," jelas Laksamana Yudo, dalam keterangan tertulis, Minggu (22/8/2021).
"Dengan kecepatan yang tinggi dan daya hancurnya yang besar kapal ini diharapkan akan mampu melaksanakan taktik kapal cepat rudal yaitu hit and run ,” kata Laksamana Yudo.
Selain itu, Kasal mengungkapkan bahwa pembangunan kapal KCR Trimaran ini tentunya memiliki makna yang sangat strategis bagi PT Lundin Industry Invest sebagai salah satu industri pertahanan nasional yang telah berhasil dalam pengembangan teknologi industri pertahanan untuk kepentingan nasional.
Langkah ini diharapkan mampu menjadi solusi dalam upaya mengurangi ketergantungan dari negara lain terkait pengadaan Alutsista TNI Angkatan Laut di masa mendatang.

Kegiatan Shipnaming dan Launching ini ditandai dengan pemecehan kendi oleh Ibu Kandung Kapal, Ny. Vero Yudo Margono dilanjutkan pernyataan peluncuran secara resmi KRI Golok-688 oleh Kasal dengan menekan tombol sirine.
Dalam prosesi ini, Kasal juga menyaksikan penandatanganan berita acara oleh Aslog Kasal Laksda TNI Puguh Santoso, S.E., M.M., dan Direktur Utama PT Lundin Industry Invest, Ibu Lizza Lundin didampingi Jon Lundin.
