Liberty 22 is a 22 ′ 3 ″ / 6.8 m monohull sailboat designed by David Thomas and built by Hunter Boats Ltd. between 1982 and 1987.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

The LIBERTY 23 (19 built) varied slightly with the same hull, more ballast, with slightly more sail area. When the free-standing aluminum masts for the LIBERTY (cat ketches) were no longer available, Hunter introduced a gaff rigged sloop version with the same hull called the MINSTREL which was built until 1993.

Review of Liberty 22

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat is equipped with 4 berths.

Unknown keel type

The boat can sail close to the beach as the draft is just 0.31 - 0.41 meter (1.02 - 1.32 ft) dependent of the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Liberty 22 is 2.26, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Liberty 22 is about 103 kg/cm, alternatively 580 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 103 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 580 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 25.42

Hunter Boat Data Liberty 22/23

Liberty 22/23

The Hunter Liberty is a David Thomas designed GRP 22 foot, cat ketch rigged, three berth, trailable, centreboard yacht of one tonne displacement. The cast iron centreboard, allied to two cast iron bilge keels, provides stability and enables the yacht to safely dry out on the level and be easily boarded.

The bilge keel and centreboard arrangement also allows the yacht to be more easily launched and retrieved from a trailer, and thus enable the trailing of the vessel to alternate locations, either for storing or expanded sailing ventures.

The cat ketch rig does not require any standing rigging and both can be raised and lowered by a single person.

The rig is also self-tacking, which is an advantage to the solo sailor.

The Liberty 23 varied slightly with the same hull, more ballast, with slightly more sail area. When the free-standing aluminium masts for the Liberty (cat ketches) were no longer available, Hunter introduced a gaff rigged sloop version with the same hull called the Minstrel which was built until 1993.

The Liberty 22 is a 1979 David Thomas design penned for Hunter Boats (the British company, not Hunter Marine of the US). Thomas drew inspiration from the traditional British Navy Montagu Whalers and the unstayed masts of Gary Hoyt’s Freedom line of yachts .

Hunter Boats built 65 Liberty 22s in the 1980s. They also built another 19 Liberty 23s, which were the same hull as the 22 with more ballast and sail area. Both designs came out of the same mold as the later Minstrel 23 . Unlike the gaff-rigged sloop rig of the Minstrel, the Liberty 22 is a cat-ketch rig with 170 square feet of sail area between the two mainsails. Owners have also added ballooners and staysails to the rig.

With the forward location of the mast, there is a relatively large and open cabin given the overall length. Typically, there is a double or two single berths, quarter berth, galley, and head.

There is an active  Hunter Liberty Minstrel Owners Association  in the UK with most of the boats having found homes in their native waters.

"What a pretty boat, with that nice stern and unusual rig: what is it?"

We agree that the questionaire is right: everything about the boat is both pretty and practical. David Thomas developed the design for Hunter Boats in 1979, capitalising on his memories of the stern of a Royal Naval Montague Whaler and the best aspects of Gary Hoyt's American Freedom concept (hence the "Liberty" name) but anglicised so that conventional mast tracks could be used - and therefore a single sail instead of a wrap round - and the sail also reefed more efficiently as the complications of the wishbone and snotter are avoided.

But we do enjoy not having genoa sheet winches, the easy balancing of the two masted rig, the use of the tightly sheeted mizzen to keep the boat heading into wind while the main is set or the anchor weighed. Enthusiasts set upwind blade staysails or downwind balloon types between the masts, or even forward of the main mast, so it is possible to make life as complicated as you wish

Life below decks is highly civilised because the main mast is so far forward that it does not interfere with the accommodation layout, while the offset main hatch allows a full sized heads compartment (with surprisingly good headroom) immediately to port. So the saloon allows a double or two singles, plus a very long quarter berth running back under the cockpit and a good galley.

The Minstrel and Liberty 23 hulls, keels and rudders are identical. Below decks they are also the same, except that the Minstrel has an essential mast support. This slight inconvenience is countered in some boats by using it as a table support. Likewise, despite the support, owners have found ways to organise an infill cushion, so allowing a double berth

Minstrels are normally faster up wind than Libertys, as they should be since they have single masted rigs and a little more sail area. For the same reasons they are not quite as stiff. Off the wind there is little difference, though Libertys sometimes seem to gain in stronger winds. To our surprise, a goose winged and well laden Liberty has run away from a spartan Bermudan rigged Minstrel with its spinnaker set, so nothing is certain

Altogether 84 Libertys were built: 65 22s and 19 23s (the same hull with more ballast, a slightly bigger rig and bigger, less attractive windows) and then Hunter Boats used the same hull to build 30 of the gaff rigged Minstrel class, which is equally popular; Liberty and Minstrel sailors delight in late evening discussions over the relative merits and speed of their boats.

The Association boasts 87 members, so we still have to find about 30 of the boats, to document the whole class. If you happen to know of one, anywhere, we would like to know how we can contact the owner, so that we can try to discover its history, regardless of whether the owner wishes to join us or not.

Vasco, a Hunter Liberty 23 is for sale due to change in circumstances. Vasco is essentially a sound, well-built and equipped boat, incorporating many of the good ideas and enhancements generated by the class association over the years but now in need of TLC, including cosmetic refurbishment, antifouling, running rigging.
Vasco is well known and documented within the Hunter Liberty and Minstrel Owners Association (HLMOA), who are well worth joining for the mine of information on the class they provide to members.

She comes with:

Spray hood
Tohatsu 6HP outboard engine, low hours not run-in yet
Batteries with solar panel and engine charging,
Autohelm,
VHF
Fish finder sonar
Cabin and Navigation lights
Portable marine sea toilet with holding tank / pump-out,
Gas stove
Good sails

Internal refurbishment has been started but requires completing. She has sound deckhead / cabin top / Ceiling foam backed vinyl lining, but the hull side lining has been removed for replacement. The internal shelving, instrument and cooker mounts have been removed for refurbishment.
All removed parts are in under cover storage, along with the tiller and rudder assembly.
Currently lying ashore at Wareham, Vasco is a promising opportunity for anyone willing and able to invest the time and love to personalize her to their own tastes. Enquiries are welcome at any time for more information, photos or to arrange viewings.

Kind regards
Jeremy

Lia~Bility, a dual rigged sloop is for sale due to health issues (the owner’s not the boats!)

Hunter Liberty 22 for sale for £5,500. Currently on her trailer on hard standing in Hereford.

This Liberty 22 is on an excellent SBS 2000 (2 tonne) four-wheel trailer with new winch and nylon strap. An extension tow bar has been fitted with stops that add progressively extended tow connections of plus 0.55 metres, 1.15 metres, 2.00 metres, 2.5 metres, and 3 metres. The first two extensions cover most situations you are likely to meet and the longest would probably only ever be needed on a beach launch. The extension pole makes launch and recovery of the Liberty as easy as my .5 tonne Sailfish 18 was as the boat floats all the way into position on the trailer and there is no pull of dead weight.

The original masts and sails are in good order, the mizzen having been newly sleeved for one metre either side of the join, forming a solid, tight fitting 2 metre union. Rivets on all fittings were drilled out and the fittings re-riveted on completion. I was very pleased with the job, and only disappointed that I will never enjoy the benefit of it!

Lia~Bility comes with a second pair of very good sails. The main is virtually new, 2 or 3 outings, and the mizzen is in good condition. The main is by Jeckells and is dark red, the mizzen is a Crusader and is white. There is another set of Liberty sails with the Gunther/Sprit rig, See below.

Lia~bility has been fitted out for inland cruising as a Gunther/ Sprit rigged sloop. In fact the configuration remains the same as the original using the standard Liberty sails and the change has been affected without compromising the boat in any way and the two rigs can be interchanged easily.

The Gunther part of the rig is pretty much the way the standard Gunther is, a shorter, or stub, mast, main 17’ 3”  (5.18 m), mizzen (15’ 9” (4.87 m) is fitted to the boat and a Gunther yard run up the mast thru Gunther irons (stainless steel) which pulls the sail into its  Bermuda shape, and the boat sail just as with the original rig. Lia~Bility can pass under any bridge, at summer levels, from Gloucester to Stourport on the Severn with the Gunther rig dropped, but she cannot sail with the Gunther down; and this is where the sprit comes into service. The Sprit attaches to the leach of the sail at a point opposite the mast head and lifts the sail out when the snotter is tightened at a point on the mast lower down, this makes a square sail, and away you sail, with the air draft reduced to a maximum of 17’ 3” main sail. The system works very well on rivers bridges that allow plus 18’ clearance. All raising and lowering of the Gunther is done from the cockpit.

In situations where the air draft is too low to allow passage to the 17’ 9” rig the masts can be lowered from the cockpit onto the cabin roof which reduces the air draft to about 8’ (2.4 m). The Gunther/Sprit rig is available as a separate purchase.

Presently the boat is laid up for two berths that can convert to a large double. The upholstery is in good order and the cabin is clean and tidy. There is a solar fed leisure battery for lights, etc. The galley has a Swedish stainless steel, methylated spirit two hob stove, which insurers prefer to bottle gas. For heating there is a Hampshire solid fuel Heater. Ship to shore communication is by a Standard Horizon Explorer GX1700E  radio gps.

Although in good general condition Lia~Bility would benefit from a hull repaint and needs anti-fouling.

Lia~Bility also comes with a Mariner 6 hp four stroke outboard which I have recently spent £600 restoring. The thinking behind this was that it made more sense to me to restore an engine I knew to be good than to invest £800 or so on another I didn’t know. I spent £345 on the work on the engine and £250 on the new gear box. All the bills are available.

I have also spent £500 + on improvements to boat and trailer, including the extension tow bar. It was all intended for me, but alas,

I am advertising Lia~Bility on the club site before offering her to a broader market, but not for long!

Contact me at any time for more information and more photos.

The boat is pretty well ready to sail in either rig but would benefit from a coat of paint to the hull, and anti-fouling or hull blacking to the underside. The interior is in good shape, see photos.

Kind regards,

James

Mizzen Mast and Boom for a Liberty 23. Offers invited

£ ono. Contact  David Dring 07860780352   [email protected]

For the mizzen:

Originally served as Mizzen Mast on 23ft Hunter Liberty. Measures approx 6.78 metres overall, with a crack at approx 1.11m from the bottom, then a repair from the crack up to about 1.34 metres from the bottom (see pics). Diameter of mast is 76mm for most of its length, before it tapers to approx 48mm at the top.

It should be possible to cut the crack and repaired section out and then sleeve/reassemble (??), otherwise the section above the repair looks straight and measures around 5.44 metres, so it might make a decent shorter mast.

Proctor mast, ex Hunter Liberty. Bent after a telephone wire incident (I'm told). Top 7m still very straight, so could be cut down for smaller boat, perhaps. Diameter at bottom of mast, and at bottom of useable 7m section is approx 89mm (i.e. it is parallel for at least the bottom 1.7m. Tapering to approx 45mm at the extreme top. Some useful fittings.

Could possibly be be repaired by cutting and sleeving, but I'm doubtful. It could certainly serve, cut down,  as a 7m mast; these Liberty masts were designed to work unstayed, so they are very strong

:

Boom (mizzen boom, as I remember, but cant be sure) ex Hunter Liberty. Stood outside a while, so perhaps for spares or repair; approx 2.59 metres long and 66mm in diameter.

Really hope these can be of use to someone.

Broker's Comments

The Hunter Liberty 22 is a very innovative design, there aren't many cat rigged ketches around of this size. The mast is unstayed so there is no standing rigging which makes it a doddle to lower the masts ready for road transportation or negotiating low bridges. She has a centre board which allows her to explore shallow creeks and also dry out on those cheaper moorings and sandy beaches. She is an easy boat to sail and handles well. Externally she requires a clean and polish but internally she is clean and tidy with a 3 berth layout and a separate heads. A roomy boat for her size. The engine has only been used for 100 hours. An interesting boat realistically priced.

Hunter Liberty 22 and Liberty/Minstral 23 differences

  • Thread starter bremar
  • Start date 22 Feb 2016
  • 22 Feb 2016

I almost managed the purchase of a Hunter Liberty 22 that had been sitting for over 2 years in a boat yard after coming off its moorings, but just before travelling down with the agreed price the boat yard said "a bit more money is needed, how much more would you offer". I walked away at that stage a little annoyed. Still looking for a hunter Liberty/Minstral and my discussions with a friend brings me to my 2 questions 1. The differences between the 22 and 23 versions of these boats appears to be a) Window shapes b) bigger rig on the 23 and c) That the 23 had an additional 300lb (140kg) of ballast added ,mainly (or all) in the form of deeper and heavier cast iron bilge keels. With ref to c) I was told that the reason for the addition ballast was that the 22 was susceptible to a wipe out and wasn't happy self righting.( I know if you reef earlier that could avoid the situation anyway) Does anyone know how true this is and will just adding 300lb (140kg) to the 22 resolve this or are the 2 deeper bilge keels the important bits. Do I therefore concentrate on finding 23 rather than a 22 because overall it is a better boat?? 2. Trailers-. When I bought my last trailer sailer it was on its original trailer it came with. Turned out the boat was 130kg heaver than capacity of trailer even when completely stripped of everything not nailed down. Not wanting to be in that position again does anyone know if a) the 22 and 23 piggyback trailers were the same and b) the plated weights of these trailers. Normally the plate will have at least the maximium total combined weight of trailer and boat (and sometimes the trailer weight which allows you to then calculate the max boat weight that can be put on the trailer ) I ask this because I can tow upto 2100kg so if the trailer happens to be plated with a higher max weight I can't tow it. And if I buy a 22 with its original trailer then add the 140kg extra ballast to bring it in line with a 23 will that then exceed the max trailer weight. Ideally I will be very happy if the max plated trailer weight is 2000kg ( or say 4,400/4,500lb) as I believe this will allow sufficient leaway to add all the other bits and pieces for a boat and the ballast and still be under 2000kg. I'm going to post this question on the Hunter Liberty and Minstral Owners Association site too as I am now a member, but thought past owners etc may have a view and the answers might be helpful for any prospective buyers. Thank you anyone for any thoughts on this. Bremar.

I have had both a 22 and a 23 and both were great boats. The 23 felt a bit heavier, not just as lively an responsive as the 22, but still a nice boat to sail. The windows on the 22 are better, and look better than the 23, but the biggest difference I noticed was that the 23 had heavier masts, and I would not want a 22 which had not had the masts sleeved to the same spec as the 23, but then you need to add the extra ballast - easily done with internal ballast - to counteract the extra weight aloft, and then increase the sail area to push the heavier boat. If the 22 was cheap enough to allow you to make the changes then I would be be quite happy with one.

1. Thanks cat ketch. I think your post nicely sums up the general position. Hi Geoff. I guess when you I made a statement in my first post above that I was told that the reason for the addition ballast was that the 22 was susceptible to a wipe out and wasn't happy self righting. That was probably my incorrect interpretation of a conversation I had had. It would have been more correct to say there had been reported incidents of the 22 being laid flat but no such incidents have ever been reported with regard to the heavier ballasted 23. This is probably better put in context by someone who later said to me "First time I have heard this idea and I have been involved since I boat tested the prototype in 1980" 2. The ballast difference appears to be 200lb not 300lb.(140kg) 3. Simply adding 200lb (91kg) of ballast to a 22 may put extra strain on the existing rig which might need sleeving to strengthen it. 4. It has been suggested that the heaver rig on the 23 includes bigger sails and heavier/stronger masts? 5. As yet I haven't found out what the actual details are on the relevant trailer plates used on the trailers for the 22 and 23. It's important to note that there is a difference between the plate on the tow hitch and the plate on the trailer. The tow hitch plate will say weights min and max to indicate the range of trailer weights it is suitable for. It is the trailer plate that is the important one here. 6. An interesting observation was that, as an alternative to putting heavier ballast in a 22 you could replace the aluminium masts with carbon. Expensive but an alternative. Just thought I'd update the link. Thank you Bremar.

Broker Remarks

This is a great introduction boat for newcomers to sailing, the Hunter Liberty 22 is easily handled and very reasonable in regards to running costs. She is a bilge keel yacht with a center plate and lifting rudder, therefor she can be stored on a drying out mooring, again keeping the cost down. The hull is in excellent condition after recently being professionally re sprayed, the decks are original gel coat, and again in good order for the year of the boat. Sails are in good condition and laundered by the current owner each winter, there is no standing rigging due to the design of the cat rig, and the spars are in good condition. The Tohatsu 8hp outboard engine is a four stroke engine and is very economical, this engine is also a recent addition and well maintained. The current owner uses her for weekend trips along the coast and occasionally exploring rivers, she offers good accommodation for a 22 foot boat, a comfortable weekend cruiser with a spacious separate heads.
