mini tonner yacht

Early mini and Half Tonners

Design number: 14 year: 1977.

Despite enjoying his work at YACHTS AND YACHTING magazine what Humphreys really wanted to do was design. After three years on the full-time payroll he left to set up his design business, but with no imminent commercial viability as such he kept his column with Y&Y and furthermore freelanced for other overseas yachting magazines. He also carried out a huge amount of rating consultancy work, advising owners on the International Offshore Rule IOR and drawing up modifications for their boats. This still did not seem to leave very much time for his own design work, but by the mid-Seventies he was beginning to see some opportunities.

In this period he designed a couple of Mini Tonners and a pair of Half Tonners, all of them essentially owner-build projects (it used to happen a great deal in those days). The Mini Tonner SHH-AM, for example, was built in London mews garage by owner Paul Howard (she was placed best British boat in the Mini Ton worlds in La Rochelle in 1977), while the Conquest 23 Mini Tonner was built as a production boat by Peter Lloyd and his son-in-law Clive Phippard under the banner of CK Marine of Weymouth.

Wally and Pat Naismith built the Half Tonner Solan Goose themselves of cold moulded cedar under the inspiration of the Gougeon’s excellent book on their WEST system, while Nick Palmer built Humbug of foam sandwich construction. There was an explosion of Half Ton interest at the time with over 50 boats competing in the British trials in 1977 just to qualify for the Half Ton worlds. Unfortunately, neither Solan Goose nor Humbug made the grade.

Solan Goose was later sailed across the Atlantic by Bob Salmon and she is believed to be in Antigua now.

IOR yachts hope to emulate Quarter Ton success story

Mini Ton Website

Following the Quarter Ton class ‘s success in building their antiquated fleet into one of the hottest racing fleets around, another group of IOR raceboats are hoping to emulate their success.

The Mini-Tonner class has been set up by Limbo 6.6 owner Matt Atkins, who says he was fed up of racing much bigger boats in club racing. He hopes the class will  build support and encourage racing for yachts of around 20-23ft, built to the IOR Mini Ton rule, most of which fall below the entry requirements for the quarter ton rule.

Historically, the IOR Mini Tonner class of yachts included not only one-off racing yachts – but it also spawned many designs that became ‘One-Design’ or production mini ton boats, such as the E-Boat, Limbo 6.6 and Hunter Sonata. Many of these ceased production some years ago , so to keep things current the group hopes to include:

1. Yachts approx 20-24ft (6m-7.5m) i.e sub-Quarter Ton size yachts, that had an IOR rating of not less than 16.5ft. 2. Yachts that were designed/built prior to 1996, and are still within in ‘the spirit of the Mini Ton Rule’. 3. We may make special dispensations/rulings to allow yachts if necessary.  However, they should be in within the design scope of these simple rules. Essentially, these are sporty sailing cruisers, but not extreme designs and so, NOT including SBR Class Sports boats, or Classe-Mini 6.50’s etc.

The class hopes to race with the resurgent Quarter Ton fleet this year, at their Vice Admiral’s Cup and the Poole Regatta.

The Popcorn 23 is 1/8 Mini Tonner with excellent design pedigree, they were originally designed by Judel and Vrolijk (top racing yacht designers!). This is the first Popcorn I have been aboard and they strike me as a great looking cruiser/racer - ideal for day/weekend sailing coupled with a touch of club racing if it takes your fancy. I believe the first ones were built in Switzerland, but we are pretty sure this is a UK built boat. We know Seamark Nunn of Felixstowe built around 7 of them in the early 1980's. These boat details are subject to contract. Note: Offers on the asking price may be considered.

Mini Tonner

Mini Tonners were one of the 'level' rating classes under the old IOR Rule, smaller than Quarter Tonners at around 20ft to 24ft length (IOR rating not exceeding 16.5ft). The Mini Tonner UK class has been set up to get these old racers back together and offer cheap and fun racing in proper little yachts. Many minitonners are production yachts, the most famous being the Sonata, but including Limbo 6.6's, E Boats and Evolution 24's, there where some special one off prototypes also built to the rule. These are super-fun, cheap to run and own boats. Many of the Mini Tonner designs have relatively short, or lifting keels that mean they can be easily towed and kept on a trailer, so the costs of ownership can be kept under control. Racing for the Main event trophies will be conducted under IRC regulations and ratings. Author: Piers Stanbury

Hi! I know about the Q-ton activity in Poland, but this activity in Russia was new to me. Interesting to see that you still use the IOR-rule. You have several good sailors, that duel in the Kingston Olympic games between Mankin and Albrechtson in Tempest! Perhaps Dennis Conner was 3:rd? Those America's Cup boats of your's in San Diego, that lacked funds... The Swedes in the Norlin-Södergren design "Tre Kronor" had a little more sponsoring, but not much. In fact "Tre Kronor" means three SEK (but it is also ironically the name of the Royal Castle in Stockholm). Regards, Booster
QT is one of the most popular classes in Russia We have about 35 Q-ton boats at Moscow Championship and about 30 Q-ton boats at Championship of Russia in 2009. The race calendar for Q-ton consist about 10-12 regattas every year (in Moscow) Another one active fleet is in Vladivostok and it consist of about 25 Konrad 25 (Peterson 25)/ In Vladivostok the races for Konrad 25 aren’t use IOR-rules. The Konrad 25 in Vladivostok is the monotype boat. Now in Vladivostok also use Platu-25 (about 10 boats)
dus25! What is the background of your Q-ton sailors? Any of the old Soling-sailors present? Any Finn-sailors? At some time your Soling sailors were very good, perhaps before the match-racing part was introduced at the Olympics? Those Soling sailors of yours bought second-hand stuff from other countries. Still they were among the fastest at the Soling World's. Impressive. What is the reason that the Q-ton is so popular in your coundtry. Can we learn something? Regards, Booster

dus25! Why NOT ! Welcome aboard ! For the people that build the ,Sukhoj - Su.26 or the Yak 54 sport planes, to not have excellent contemporary sport boats is just not googling what is happening in Russia. A fellow flies into Port Townsend with a Su26 sport plane and I've spent much time examining the plane and having worked for Boeing as a tooling engineer on the 767 start up after my Bayliner years; I can rate it with a Beech craft/Bonanza for an elegant high order build minus a leatherette appointed cabin. The www.vprincipe.ru web sit covers much of the river racing Scene in the big "M". I was google mapping a river on the East coast of the White Sea, were I clicked on a picture near a logging town's dock, and was surprised to see a 1980 Bayliner 2550 / Saratoga sedan cruiser !!!!!!! I would say of any place where the IOR could continue to influence boat design out side the pressure of the "one design think" would be a place like Russia. The US is a slave to marketing pressure to join the big white one design fleet. The thrust or focus towards the youth, sport boat design type to the exclusion of alternative designs personaly bugs me. These rich boat manufactures vacuum up " all "wanting to get into boats like the Quarter ton type boat. Often a J-24 can speed past my Peterson 25 in meny conditions but light air, yet I much prefer the P-25, to a j-24 hands down. Like meny monitoring this topic like these boats for one reason are an other. I enjoy seeing the snaps of the Quarter Ton boats and the racing in the Moscow waters.

Scandinavian - Evind Still?
difficult Mystery boat again!!! Gary B says Scandinavian, Eivind Still? Well, the stern looks like a little Doug Peterson, and Trägårdh (Sweden) did some sterns like that. Södergren usually didn't have that flat part under the transom. Norlin designed a quarter-tonner "Creme Fraiche" about 78-79 that was a little Manznita inspired. The backstay-arrangement is unusual in Sweden (under the relevant period). On old boats, say -50 you can find it. The compasses recessed in the deck is unusual in Sweden as well (under that period). Some german boats had that compass arrangement. On the other hand Judel&Vrolic was later. Perhaps Elvström&Kjearulf? This is a difficult one. Regards, Booster

If it is a true Davidson design it most likely would have an open transom. And he wouldn't have had those hi field levers on the backstay runners. Also the midships beam looks too wide for a Davidson, too much a fatty. The transom also looks very similar to a Berret's Oesophage Boogie 3/4 tonner - although this is a smaller boat.
Mystery quarter tonner. This is are " was " an interesting 1979 North Americans winner. The boat always reminded me of "Mr. Bill's Dog" 1/2 ton winner out of Oklahoma! Do not remember when Mr. Bill won the worlds 1980's? Any way, I well post a bow on snap of this 1/4 ton boat that Paul B well pick up on. I liked the way it's bow pulpit was laid out and duplicated it for my Peterson 25. Never regretted that. I didn't think fellows out side the US would recognize the design. Gary B was right on about the tacking runner levers. 1928-30 technology out of Scandinavia to help underway tuning for IOD - Dragons. When this 1/4 ton boat had success in the N.A. Latitude 38 talked it up about how slick the levers worked. I can attest to that fact. Most of the races were held on the Berkeley triangle, However one race "the first or last" can't recall ??? was started wright off the beach at the St.Frances Yacht club. The two boats that were hot on its heels looked like a Farr 727 and a Thunder bird ? Wasn't up close and personal with this race, Unfortunately. Yet with my field glasses I could see the boats jockeyed for position at the start and saw the levers let off, then bang they came on. very smooth. The Boat was Carl Schumacher's "Summertime Dream." crm

Paul B It was only a mini Toner????? Man my memory is shot. I will upload the Summertime file now, again I had resolution set to high. Also a shot at the start of a race at these N.A.'s I think it is of this Suzi you have mentioned, as it has a cabin port lite, however the Farr 727 did to. Sailing Anarchy had a very nice write up about the Kelly designed mini Mr. bill's"big" dog. I Do remember the Oklahoma connection, which cough my eye. Let's take a look. crm

California yacht sinks after fireworks explode, blaze breaks out on video, luxury yacht explodes fireworks, live ammo onboard ... sinks after 2 hours.

091924_boat_fire_kal

A luxury yacht sank off the coast of Los Angeles ... taking on water after a ton of fireworks blasted off from the deck.

In a scene straight out of the film "Battleship," firefighters responded to the Marina del Rey harbor Wednesday night to fight a blaze consuming a 120-foot-yacht ... with news crews on hand to film the blaze.

091924-boat-fire-smoke-v1

Check out the video ... the fire squadrons gave it all they got -- but, it's pretty clearly a lost cause, with smoke billowing out from the ship.

As for the cause of the fire .... that's still under investigation -- but, just before it kicked off, fireworks launched off the ship and exploded just above, so it certainly seems like a magical moment gone wrong.

091924-boat-fire-smoke-v3

BTW ... authorities say there were also 1,000 rounds of ammunition on the boat -- unclear why or what kind. Authorities also say there were two people on the ship at the time. Both survived, with one sustaining minor injuries.

Unfortunately, there was no chance for firefighters to save this ship from the Titanic's fate ... the yacht sank about two hours after the fire started.

091924-boat-fire-smoke-v4

Like we said, investigators are still looking into how the fire started ... though we can't imagine fireworks and live ammo are a fire marshal-approved combo.
