Best portable sailing dinghies for under £5k

We put six portable sailing dinghies under £5,000 to the test to see which one is the best all-rounder and really deserves a place on your boat

The MiniCat Guppy is a newer model to her bigger sister, the MiniCat 420.

The Guppy was the only catamaran we had on test.

In terms of usability, she was up against the Tiwal 2 in that she is aimed more at fun sailing that tender work.

The Guppy has been designed to be more portable and quicker to assemble than the previous 420.

She certainly ticks the more-portable box and was the only boat in our test that came in a single bag and was fully 17kg lighter overall than the next lightest.

Certain features feel a little lightweight when she is fully rigged, however.

Each hull has an attachable skeg, which slot into the hulls via a pocket.

These plastic skegs felt rather brittle though only time would tell if they are up to being dragged up beaches and slipways.

MiniCat Guppy set-up

The MiniCat took a lot longer than any other boat we tested to set-up, at over half an hour.

However, she was the only boat without a representative on site and the lack of an occasional bit of advice certainly added to this.

Officially, it took us 
38 minutes from bag 
to beach, but our testers agreed this would be quicker a second time.

Putting it together a second time would certainly be easier

The boat has a metal central spine upon which the mast and the rudder stock sit.

This is locked into the forward and aft beams – ready attached to the two inflatable hulls out of the bag – via a large pin and retaining rings at either end.

Both ends of the central spine need to be offered up to the beams simultaneously.

The MiniCat Guppy took the longest to set up

It was certainly a two-man job, though there’s almost certainly a knack to it.

The rig was easy to set up with a simple three-piece aluminium mast and a pocket in the luff of the sail into which the mast slides.

Shrouds and forestay all come connected to one piece of metal that attaches to the mast about two thirds of the way up, and spring clips make attaching them to the metal trampoline frame easy.

A small central rudder provides steerage, and other propulsion would be via paddles.

MiniCat Guppy test

We had fairly high hopes for the MiniCat under sail and in the gusts of a dying breeze, she showed she would be fun in a blow.

She certainly suffers from the age-old difficulty of catamarans in that she was very difficult to tack in light winds.

As with most catamaran dinghies, she is helmed from a trampoline between the two hulls.

This makes her very much a sit on, not in, experience.

We found it quite difficult to find the right position to sit on her.

The Guppy would be fun in a blow. In light winds, the battens didn’t pop through

We felt we were either too far aft, dragging the transoms, or too far forward, digging the bows, perhaps a function of her diminutive size.

That being said, she was simple to sail in a straight line and had bags of stability.

As with the Tiwal 2 she would be ideal for sailing around in for a bit of fun while the boat is at anchor.

You might fit two youngsters on her but it would be a squeeze for adults.

The MiniCat Guppy is certainly the most portable of all the sailing dinghies we tested.

We forgive the time is took to set up as this would almost certainly get quicker with use.

However, she was not as fun to sail as the Tiwal 2 and she lacks the versatility of the other sailing dinghies.

There also seems to be a few odd decisions made in the design process, like the small size of the rudder, and the fully battened mainsail.

The larger MiniCat 420 has the option of an outboard mount, so become a more useful option as a tender.

However, the bags are almost double the size.

For children messing around in a boat of their own at anchor, this is a toy that could easily fit onto a larger yacht.

On smaller boats where space is at a premium, we would want more of an all-round dinghy.

I’ve had my Guppy for the summer and love it. It’s reasonably fast. It does great on beam reaches. When the wind gets to around 8+ knots it feels pretty zippy. But, right, bigger boats and rigid-hull cats pass me,

In light winds, the Guppy will move, but not like a rigid-keel cat with a jib of course.

The Guppy is incredibly stable. I haven’t pushed it but have probably been in winds up to 15 knots (it’s nominal limit). It will start to really move, but for me it stays flat on the water (I weigh 200 lbs, so that’s part of it) and is very easy to handle.

The Guppy fits into my Mini Cooper, goes together in 15 minutes without rushing it, and is lots of fun to sail.

I bought it without being able to test it first and have had no disappointments.

The Guppy is perfect for me — the larger MiniCats would perform better but are heavier and take a longer time to set up.

There are no words to describe the feeling! Especially as I have waited so long to be back at sea again. The MiniCat 420 is very fast and easily maneuverable. I cannot thank Ivano at Mystic Point Water Sports enough for all his patience and passion in making this a reality for me.

In two packs you can take the MiniCat as luggage on an intercontinental plane, and with all that it is still a sporty and exciting sailing boat.

Being a Cat is also useful on a lake with shallow grounds. I have sailed in ponds, rivers and seas, in the small boat section there is none better that the MiniCat 310. Fabulous.

“I just bought and enjoyed for a small period of time up to now (August 2016) the 420 evoque and there are two aspects I’d like to share:

– The boat is more than a beach toy. The structure is perfect and solid; a simple construction but of real high quality. Although the first attempt to assembly takes really more than the promised 30 min, after some practice (2 or 3 times) when you finally see and understand all connections, details and the mistakes that you need to avoid (especially when raising the mast), the preparation of the boat becomes really easy. The sailing is perfect and can give you a range of emotions between pure fun and challenging sailing (depending on the winds that you will sail). It seems like that the boat itself includes a learning curve which makes it even more interesting and creates an anticipation feeling to sail again and again. Although very simple to handle, gives you the opportunity to play and start testing limits (sail in stronger winds, on one float etc.). It can be a boat for beginners (can be really fast though even with a small breeze) up to a more challenging and demanding game that you can play with for hours and hours.

– The team behind the boat is composed by real professionals who are more than interested to satisfy their client. The boat initially received (I purchased a demo boat at a discount) had a fault on one of the floats, which I only identified when tried to assembly during vacations far from home in Athens. Contacted the team and explained the problem; they reacted fast and sent me a replacement float (as part of the boat ‘s guarantee) within 4 days directly at the place of out vacations (far from Athens, the initial place of receipt). A great thanks to Petra and the team for their understanding, assistance and quick reactions. “

“My experience of the MiniCat 420 so far…

We purchased our MiniCat 420 in early September 2012. Delivery was very quick – only 3 days from CZ to the UK!

We have used the boat 3 times so far, but intend to get sailing again when the weather improves.

The Good Points – Easy to sail even for a beginner, it is very fast and picks up in even a gentle breeze. The boat is well built and good quality components used throughout. Out of all the inflatable cats out there I would say that the MiniCat is the best value for money and has the best design features.

The fact that all the attachments for building the boat are connected which means you don’t lose things on the beach. Boat is easy to clean and dry off after use.

The Bad Points – Takes more time than 30 minutes to setup (The cable connections could be colour coded to help find the correct connection. The mast for one person is difficult to raise with the sail connections in place. I would recommend buying a good electric pump to help speed up inflation of the hulls as they are large and hold a lot of air. The boat is quite heavy and bulky once built (again a lot for one person).

I certainly would recommend buying one of these boats if you want to get out onto the water with the family and don’t have much storage space when not in use.

I just wanted to write to tell you how delighted I am with my MiniCat 420.

I was somewhat apprehensive about the purchase, wondering how easily she’d fit on my 20 metre Aquastar. In fact stowage is no problem – I leave her derigged with the tubes deflated and frame assembled. Takes just a few minutes to get her ready to sail.

And how she sails! A proper little craft. She is so light that sailing in light airs is great fun, and in any sort of breeze, WOW!

As a matter of interest, I gave my 16 year old daughter, who had never sailed before, an hour’s experience on the 420.  She then took me ashore from the anchorage – about two kilometres in a Force 3 – for breakfast and back out to the boat again without any help from me. She is hooked!

I have owned my MiniCat 310 for one year now. I must say the assembly is not at all complicated, in fact it’s quite self-explanatory. I watched one or two assembly MiniCat videos on YouTube, then it almost went by itself. I can assemble now in 20-30mins depending how hard I pump. I sail completely alone without any difficulties, but maybe next season I will upgrade to a MiniCat 420.

“I Love My MiniCat 420. I have sailed a SuperCat 17′ for over 30 years and found it heart breaking to sell it. I needed a boat that would be less expensive to keep, easy to store and transport as well as fun to sail. Looking on the internet I found a number of inflatable catamarans to choose from and I began to compare cost and features. Some were not more than toys and some were too big for my needs.

I came upon the MiniCat 420 and found its quality design and construction plus its hardware and rigging to be a serious sailboat. The price was competitive with other boats but I was not sure about shipping to the USA as well as parts and service. I found a dealer in Budapest who had in stock a display model that was a year old that had never been sailed for a good price and I bought it.

The dealer was also a 420 owner and experienced sailor who was very helpful and knowledgeable. When it arrived there was a minor rigging error from the factory that was replaced right away.

I love the way it sails and how easy it is to assemble and store.

Most of the time I sail single handed but it is comfortable for two people.

One of the main points on the MiniCat 420 which impresses me a lot is that it really works out of the box (or the two bags). I was really doubtful on that and did not expect it. There is basically no additional tuning stuff necessary to get this cat run fast on water. Except of course a Gennaker for the 420 would make the whole thing just perfect!! The other crucial point for me to buy the MiniCat was the cool and modern design with its variety of fresh and fancy colour style compared to other inflatable cat brands. But the most mind-blowing point is this awesome MiniCat community which I entered with buying this boat. Minicat does a lot to bring owners and distributors around the world together to exchange on and live their sailing passion. Last but not least: With only a little modification you turn your MiniCat into a tiny yacht which provides sleeping accommodation for up to two persons and allows autonomous multi day yacht trips at seaside.

A few words I have about MiniCat is I was raised on Hobie Cats here on Hawaii from my father. One of the biggest inconveniences is the inability to easily set-up the boat unless a trailer and access to the beach is available. This is why I chose MiniCat! The parts are very well made and setup only takes about 30 minutes and gives endless amounts of hours of fun. The distributor (Sailing Awaits LLC) was very accommodating and I felt like I was getting a boat that I could truly enjoy and I have truly enjoyed it thus far.

“The MiniCat is a little beast. I own a 420 Emotion and never had so much fun with a small boat. It sails perfectly in 2-4 knots winds (to the annoyment of my KiteSurfer friends who have to sit and watch from the beach) and handles itself well in winds up to 20 knots (that requires some sailing skills, due to its low weight, minuscule fins and generous sail area). But then again, if you pull this off, the KiteSurfer friends are getting double-annoyed. Plus, it launches from the beach single-handedly. Fırst of all I need to thank the producers of this magic sailing boat. Excellent work! For many years I wanted to buy a sailing boat but here in Istanbul it’s so difficult because of the high marina costs. Then I discovered the MiniCat three years ago and I decided to buy this, I connected to Petra at MiniCat, then we got a sailing boat!

İt’s so simple and east to carry where you go with your car. İ have a Mini hatchback car, when driving outside the town for holidays, my MiniCat comes on the roof, fixed with the cargo belts. İf we are 2 person we can fit it inside of the car. That’s a great choice and solution! After of the summer days, we can store it in our house.

From beginner sailors to experienced ones every user loves to sail with my boat. İt’s very friendly and tolerant with the minimal mistakes. İ’m a sailor from the age of 9 and also instructor but my wife doesn’t know sailing but she manages the boat easily without much difficulty.

I highly recommend MiniCat for anyone who wants a boat for daily sailing. My thanks to MiniCat family again.

TECHNICAL DETAILS

FRAME & DECK

The MiniCat 310 frame, to which the floats attach, is produced from light-weight aluminium and the frame parts are powder coated. The trampoline is produced from high strength woven plastic fabric. The frame is attached to the floats by means of welded-on ‘flags’, which are inserted into the pockets on the floats. The design is such that these are pre-fixed to the main frame with trampoline so the assembly time is shortened to the minimum.

The central tube is attached to the underside of the frame and the rudder mechanism is housed at the rear of the tube. At the front of the tube is the anchor-point for the mast line and jib.

The MiniCat is equipped with two inflatable floats 3.15 m length and 39 cm diameter. The floats are made of reinforced Heytex 5509, highly resistant to abrasion and very hard wearing. This material is produced in Germany and production technology was adopted from the production of ‘white-water’ rafts. The floats are single-chamber with a combined load capacity of 240 kg | 550lbs.

To fully enjoy your sailing, you must confidently control your boat. It is imperative to minimize ‘side-sail’, especially when sailing against the wind. To achieve this keel fins were designed to attach under each float. Their design and shape give excellent performance yet still allows the boat to be sailed in very shallow water without the risk of damage.

The mast consists of three sections of equal length, slotted together. The length of the assembled mast is 3.8 m. The mast is from alloy tubing (AIMg 0.7 Si) powder coated grey and black and has a groove for the sail attachment. This construction ensures high rigidity and strength for ultimate safety, performance and enjoyment.

The MiniCat is equipped with a main sail and jib. The total area of the sails is 5.15 sqm (main sail 3.75 sqm, jib 1.40 sqm). The material ‘Dimension Polyant’ is used with a surface density of 175 g/m. The main sail is ‘all-spire’ construction, i.e. without a boom. There are 6 flat spires in the sail. MiniCat Sport is equipped with a ‘jib furler’. The main sail has a window to ensure better visibility while sailing.

The aluminium rudder on the MiniCat is attached to the central tube. The design of the rudder allows it to be raised at a 90-degree angle, so at the shore or in very shallow water there is no danger of damage. The rudder can be locked in both positions, raised or lowered.

The tiller arm is jointed allowing full 360-degree movement.

MiniCat is based in the Czech Republic and manufactures a range of inflatable catamarans from 9’8’’ to 15’ (3 to 4.6 m). The idea is to offer easy-to-use boats that are easy to transport, quick to assemble and fun to use. As a result, all models can be disassembled and transported in a wheeled bag that fits in the trunk of a car or on the roof rack, that can find a place in an RV and even be transported by airplane... For our purposes, MiniCats will also find a place aboard our liveaboard multihulls. MiniCat has been in existence for 17 years and has already sold hundreds of boats all over the world. The concept has also won over famous sailors such as Laura Dekker, who at the age of 16 became the youngest person to sail solo around the world. Having had the opportunity to sail on a MiniCat, Laura fell in love with the concept and, since 2010, has even become an ambassador for the brand. Laura even participated in the creation of her own boat - the 420 Laura Dekker Ltd. Edition.

MiniCat 460

Performs as good as it looks..

The MiniCat 460 is the largest and fastest in the MiniCat lineup. It fits a wide range of functionality with the ability to mount an outboard and a total weight capacity of 1,234 pounds! This is a great family sailboat, with a focus on speed and performance. It's also a great day sailor when you want to carry more weight and make better speed, especially in light winds. This boat turns into an absolute rocket ship when put into capable hands. The MiniCat 460 is a great value in performance beach cats.

The MiniCat 460 comes in 2 different trim levels: Esprit and Elite. All 460 models include a continuous line jib furler, traveller, and boomless mainsail. You can learn more about each trim level below.

MiniCat 460 Esprit

The 460 Esprit is a fantastically fast and efficient sailboat. Its mast is one section taller than the 420 mast and has a longer waterline which translates to a faster boat in all conditions.

MiniCat 460 Elite

The 460 Elite is everything the 460 Esprit aspires to be, but with carbon fiber bits for a more performance aesthetic. Don’t be fooled, the carbon mast isn’t just for looks; the carbon mast is much easier to step when assembling the boat, and it is much less weight aloft than the aluminum mast which allows you to carry full sails in stronger winds without a worry of capsizing.

MiniCat 460 Features & Benefits

The MiniCat 460 is a boat that combines premium and lightweight materials that allow you to spend time on the water without the need for a slip or trailer! This travel ready sailboat is perfect for fast solo sailing as well a safe and family friendly daysailer.

Dyneema Shrouds - Standard

Dyneema cordage is stronger than steel and soft on the hands. Dyneema also weighs less than steel. Less weight aloft = faster! Believe it or not, but these Dyneema shrouds will even stretch less under tension than stainless steel wire. This cordage is easier to stow (for faster take-down and setup of the boat).

MiniCat has included spreaders on the mast of the 460. This is a major upgrade to rig tension of the boat. These upgraded spreaders will increase the available power on MiniCat's largest and most powerful model.

Tilt-Up Mast Step

A new option for 2024, a tilt up mast step will greatly reduce the stress and physicality of stepping the 460. The 460 mast is one whole section longer than the 420 mast, making it 25% heavier. This is a welcome upgrade that will allow you to buy the faster boat without signing up for a sore back while trying to step the mast.

Windowed Sails

The jib and main sails on the MiniCat boats all have windows in them. This allows you to be more aware of your surroundings. Even with the colorful sails, sometimes other boaters are not paying attention. These windows allow you to see 360° and be responsive to your surroundings.

Jib Travelers

Jib travelers are unique on an infaltable catamaran! These are a major upgrade allowing for more optimal sheeting angles of your jib. This means the MiniCat 460 will point much higher and be faster on more points of sail than the 420 and even competitor's sailboats!

Fully Battened Square-top Mainsail

The square-top mainsail provides this beachcat with more than enough power to have a fun day on the water. Fully battened for superior sail shape, even in light winds. The 460 can easily reach speeds up to 18+ knots and some have even pushed their boat faster than 20 knots!

Heytex 5509 PVC

All MiniCats, including the MiniCat 460, have hulls made in Germany with Heytex 5509 PVC. This is top shelf PVC and has a longer life expectancy than typical boat PVC. This boat fabric is no different than other PVC with regards to repair. It is easily repairable by an amateur, so no more expensive boat yard repair bills! MiniCat now covers their hulls with a 7-year warranty!

Powder Coated Lightweight Frame

MiniCats are built with lightweight aluminum frames that have been powder coated using techniques that are time tested and durable. The rugged, long-lasting frame uses the lightweight and durable materials for both transport ease and sailing performance.

Jib Halyard Tensioner - Standard

The MiniCat 460 includes a jib halyard tensioner as standard equipment. This tensioner will allow you to increase your rig and jib luff tension significantly allowing for better pointing angles and better sail control.

Low Aspect Ratio Keels

The MiniCat 460 is equipped with long shallow keels under each hull which contribute to the MiniCat’s ease of use and great sailing characteristics. The keels allow the 460 to be sailed in very shallow waters. Only fly a hull when you want; the keels resist the rotation of the hulls making this boat harder to capsize than other beach cats! The keels are set aft of the mast, which allows the 460 to tack much quicker than other hard hulled catamarans.

Small Pack-down for Easy Storage and Transport

The MiniCat 460 packs away into three easy-to-manage bags. These bags are well-organized to keep things from getting damaged in storage.The MiniCat bags and packaway are better than other portable boats on the market. These bags can be stored under your bed, in a closet or checked as luggage on an airplane. Call your airline for a quote on oversized luggage fees, they can vary by airline. Optional wheeled storage bags are easy to transport and move around without heavy lifting.

Code 0 Sail for MiniCat 460

One (1) Screecher with a furler for a MiniCat 420 or 460. This is a high quality with a cut similar to a traditional Code 0 sail. It is a little flatter than the old gennaker which allows for better reaching. This sail is on a continuous line furler which makes this sail very simple to operate and stow.

The sail area for the 460 version is 106.5 ft² (9.9 m²).
