There are no pre-requisites for the course but it aims to provide a good, broad base of experience for anyone who wants to take a powerboat out on their own.

As with all of our courses the days will be mainly practical and hands on to give you the best experience, skills and confidence in the handling of powerboats.

This two-day course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence.

Course covers:

Launching and recovery: Going through the step by step actions needed to ensure the safe launching and recovery of the vessel.

Boat handling: Basic boat handling skills, familiarizing you with the controls and maneuverability of the vessel

Securing to a buoy: Learn the safe method to approach and secure to a mooring buoy

Anchoring: Learn the safe methods of anchoring a vessel and its recovery. The use of different anchor types for different conditions.

Leaving and coming alongside: Learn how to safely approach a pontoon, slip or even another vessel.

Man overboard: Learn a number of techniques should you be faced with an emergency at sea

RYA Powerboat Level 1 / Start Powerboating

Provides a practical introduction to boat handling and safety in powerboats. It covers boating techniques for launching and recovering a boat from a road trailer, everyday boat handling and the use of safety equipment. The course may be conducted in a variety of boat types, both planing and displacement, and the certificate issued will be endorsed to show the type of boat in which the training took place. A one day introduction to Powerboating with no previous experience required.

Assumed knowledge: None Course content:  Launch and recovery, preparation of boat and crew, boat handling, pick up and securing to a mooring buoy, leaving and coming alongside, being towed Ability after the course:  Able to drive under supervision Min duration:  1 Day Minimum age: 8

The RYA Start Powerboating course is a fun and informative introduction to powerboating over a single day for complete beginners.

RYA Powerboat Level 2

Assumed knowledge: None; may be preceded by L1 Start Powerboating

Course content:  Launching and recovery, boat handling, securing to a buoy, anchoring, leaving and coming alongside, man overboard

Ability after the course:  Self-sufficient powerboater in the right conditions, aware of own limitations and those of craft

Min duration: 2 Days

Minimum age:  12

The RYA Powerboat Handling Level 2 course aims to develop a range of practical basic skills enabling you to become a safe and competent powerboater, able to moor up the boat in a range of scenarios as well as driving the boat faster in open waters.

Course dates and booking

Intermediate

Assumed knowledge:  Boat handling to the standard of the L2 Powerboat Handling course.  Knowledge to the level of Day Skipper theory is recommended.  It is also strongly recommended that candidates hold a first aid certificate and a VHF/SRC operators certificate. Course content:  Planning a day cruise, boat preparation, boat handling, pilotage, passage making, man overboard Ability after the course:  Able to plan and execute short coastal passages by day Min duration: 2 Days Minimum age:  16

The RYA Intermediate Powerboat course is a great stepping stone to start developing and applying navigation skills to extend your day on the water that little bit further and start exploring what’s around the corner.

Currently unavailable

Assumed knowledge:  Candidates should be competent to the standard of the Intermediate Powerboat Certificate with thorough knowledge of the navigation and chartwork to the level of Coast Skipper / RYA Yatchmaster Shorebased certificate.  It is strongly recommended that candidates hold a first aid certificate and a VHF/SRC operators licence or higher. Course content:  Preparation for sea, boat handling, passage making and responsibility as skipper, pilotage, meteorology, rules of the road (IRPCS), use of engines, emergency situations, night cruising Ability after the course:  Able to plan and execute coastal trips and return to a familiar port by night Min duration: 2 Days, including at least 1 night navigation exercise Minimum age:  17

The RYA Advanced Powerboat course brings you to explore night navigation and the joys of piloting your vessel by night.  This qualification can also be commercially endorsed, enabling to work as a Powerboat Driver.

Tender Operator Course

Assumed knowledge:  Boat handling to the standard of the L2 Powerboat Handling course.  Knowledge to the level of Day Skipper theory is recommended.  It is also strongly recommended that candidates hold a first aid certificate and a VHF/SRC operators certificate. Course content:  Passenger safety and comfort, day & night time pilotage, emergency situations, associated theory Ability after the course:  Confident undertaking short ‘ship to shore’ transfers by day and night Min duration: 2 Days Minimum age:  17

The RYA Tender Operator course is particularly suited for crew working in the Superyacht industry who have responsibilities to take guests ashore from the vessel.

This two-day course provides the skills and theory required for driving a powerboat (of less than 10m) or tender. It focuses on low speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, high-speed manoeuvers and collision regulations. A one-day course may apply for more experienced powerboat drivers.

Post Course

After the course you should be a self-sufficient power-boater on open planning craft up to 10m in the right conditions, aware of your own limitations and those of the craft. At the end of a successful course you may also be eligible for an International Certificate of Competence (ICC).

Note: if you are taking this course and intend to apply for an ICC, a coastal Powerboat Level 2 course will allow you to apply for a coastal ICC for Power up to 10m. The inland Powerboat Level 2 course will allow you to apply for an inland ICC for Power up to 10m, providing you have also successfully passed a CEVNI test. For more information and to check the eligibility criteria please refer to the ICC application form.

We run the full range of RYA courses here in Mallorca. Milebuilders are part of a much larger family of nautical businesses; which includes two RYA accredited training centres.

Deep Blue Sea Training is an International Yachtmaster Academy & Powerboat School based in Palma, Mallorca and Southampton UK and specialising in helping professional yacht crew and seafarers. Solaris Sailing is aimed at recreational boaters who may have the ambition to become a Yachtmaster or just enjoy getting out on the water.

This means that we are able to provide you with the perfect level of training you require regardless of whether you are a recreational boater looking for your first introduction to boats, or a professional in the maritime industry looking to increase your qualifications for your job.

Choice of courses

Milebuilders provide RYA Courses for both professional yacht crew and recreational boaters. So whether you wish to learn to sail for fun, complete a Yachtmaster course , a Powerboat course or one of our specialist courses we are here to provide you with expert, friendly advice and assistance. Our team of highly experienced Yachtmaster instructors love the sea and will help you to get the most from your sailing with the priority on safe fun. We will equip you with the skills and learning to be confident out at sea, whether in your own boat or a charter yacht.

RYA courses include: Yachtmaster (Navigation Theory, Sail Yachtmaster, Motor Yachtmaster, Sail to Power Yachtmaster conversion, Yachtmaster Ocean), Powerboat Courses (including Powerboat Level 2), jetski courses and various Specialist courses such as VHF SRC, Radar and First Aid. We also provide ICC training (International Certificate of Competence).

Whether you need a licence to drive a tender, a jet ski, a radar qualification or a first aid certificate. Whether you need to do a course in Sea Survival, diesel engine maintenance or a VHF short range certificate, there is a training course from the RYA that offers the solution. The highly prized Yachtmaster scheme offers professional licences that when commercially endorsed give the holder significant privileges including that of a Captain of Yachts up to 200 gross tonnes with up to 12 paying passengers. Find a Power Boat Level II Training Provider

The Power Boat Level II is an essential course for deck crew working in the superyacht industry. It is also advisable for steward/stewardesses, and engineers to hold a powerboat license. This two-day entry-level course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat in a safe and effective manner. The powerboat level II is a requirement for crew wishing to drive a superyacht tender up to 10m.

Course Breakdown

The majority of the course is practical with a short theory classroom session. The theory learning will continue during the practical training and assessment. The powerboat level II usually takes two days to complete, weather permitting. The topics covered are as follows:

• Execution of class theory
• Launching and recovery
• Confined space maneuvering
• Man overboard procedure
• Engine checks
• High-speed handling
• Collision regulations
• Emergency procedures
• Basic chart work and navigation
• Briefing and practical overview

Powerboat Level 2 Certificate Outcome:

Apart from providing a strong base upon which powerboat handling skills can be built, the powerboat level 2 course is the basis for the ICC (International certificate of competence). A commercially endorsed power boat level II certificate can be used to transport guests and passengers, in tenders up to 10m in length.

The RYA Powerboat level II certificate does not have an expiry date.

Palma Sea School's Powerboat Level 2 course - aimed as an introduction to power boating with the course covering a much wider range of topics than the level 1 course. There are no pre-requisites for the course but it aims to provide a good, broad base of experience for anyone who wants to take a powerboat out on their own.

As with all of our courses the days will be mainly practical and hands on to give you the best experience, skills and confidence in the handling of powerboats.

This two-day course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence.

Course covers:

Launching and recovery: Going through the step by step actions needed to ensure the safe launching and recovery of the vessel.

Boat handling: Basic boat handling skills, familiarizing you with the controls and maneuverability of the vessel

Securing to a buoy: Learn the safe method to approach and secure to a mooring buoy

Anchoring: Learn the safe methods of anchoring a vessel and its recovery. The use of different anchor types for different conditions.

Leaving and coming alongside: Learn how to safely approach a pontoon, slip or even another vessel.

Man overboard: Learn a number of techniques should you be faced with an emergency at sea

"Best! Day! Ever!" – My daughter at the end of Day 1 training

Summer is just around the corner and thoughts are beginning to turn to beach, sun and sea. For those so inclined, part of the fun of the season is getting off the shore and onto the water. There are few things that make one feel freer than being out on the open sea, wind in your hair. And whilst that’s great fun, wouldn’t it be even MORE fun if you were able to drive the boat yourself? Well here’s how you do it… and in just one weekend!

We then practice more man overboard drills, some reverse driving, and how to get into and out of narrow channels. After this full morning, we take a break then get started on theory.

"Super helpful but there are many Germans on the island as well, like me, and for us there is the possibility to obtain the so-called 'SBF license' ( SBF-Schein ) valid for all boats which you can get on Mallorca. What is so great is that if you book your course at On Water as I have done you can be sure to pass the test (I got my own license only two weeks ago!) There is only one thing nobody tells you – that once you have your license and take out a really good boat for the first time you catch the boat virus and there is no cure for it no matter how good your health insurance is. Have fun. Affordable Mallorca is doing a great job. This is just an extra bit of information about my experience as a German. All the best, H."

"Super hilfreich aber es gibt auch viele Deutsche hier so wie mich und für uns gibt's den SBF-Schein den man hier inkl. Prüfung auf Mallorca machen kann und der Schein ist ohne Begrenzung - Alle Boote. Das Beste ist, wenn er, so wie ich, bei On Water gemacht wird, schafft man die Prüfung (bestes Beispiel ich selber vor 2 Wochen). Nur eins sagen einem alle nicht: wenn man den Schein hat und dann das erste Mal mit einem richtig tollen Boot losmacht dann bekommt man den Bootsvirus und leider hilft da auch keine private Krankenkasse. Habt Spass. Affordable macht 'ne super Arbeit, ich ergänze gerade nur meine Erfahrung als Deutscher auf Mallorca. Lg. H. “

If you are interested in becoming an RYA instructor then Deep Blue Sea Training can help you to achieve your ambitions. At regular intervals throughout the year we offer RYA instructor courses for Personal Watercraft (jetskis), Powerboating, Sail Cruising and Motor Cruising. Teaching on the water and in the classroom is great fun and can also be quite demanding, however it is always very satisfying and rewarding. Remember, those that you teach will rightly expect you to know what you're doing, to have the answers, and to be able to easily demonstrate the things you are asking them to do, whilst all the time being patient, friendly and approachable.

RYA Training is very highly regarded throughout the world - there are more than 2500 RYA training centres worldwide - so it follows that in order to be a successful instructor you should already be quite experienced on the water, have good theory knowledge and be able to convey what you know in a clear and logical way. Ideally it would also help if you have taken an RYA course in the last few years, so that you have recent experience of receiving RYA training.
