Post by Jackie Au - Published on 05/31/22 12:30 PM The Pacific Northwest is home to some of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the United States. From the deep green of the Olympic National Forest to the gorgeous blues of the Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands, Washington State is the gem of the Pacific Northwest. Washington is the “Evergreen State,” but it’s also home to beautiful lakes and coastlines, making it excellent for boating. A day on the Sound is an adventure, but you may find yourself wanting more. There are some critical considerations for those looking to explore the liveaboard lifestyle in Washington State. Check out our tips and best picks below! Key Considerations When Selecting a Liveaboard Marina in Washington StateSo you’ve decided that the liveaboard lifestyle is the one for you. From the beauty of living on a boat to the freedom it can provide, we’d say you made the right choice. However, before you can get to living on your vessel, there are five key considerations you have to take into account: For most, the price will be your top consideration when looking for liveaboard marinas in Washington. Money talks and liveaboard situations are no different. Aside from the actual prices of liveaboard slips, you have to remember that there is often a waiting list for many marinas to even get space for your boat! Getting on the waiting list is not free and can set you back between $25-$150 . To learn more about docking and mooring pricing for marinas in Washington and book your spot online, check out our Washington marinas . When you choose to liveaboard, there are specific amenities you’ll have to give up. Like buying any home, it’s essential to do your research as marinas offer different things, such as WiFi , showers, gyms, restaurants , captains lounges, campgrounds , pools, etc. What services will your marina provide? The essentials include pump-out stations, fuel and diesel , water, and electrical hookups . Not every marina has these, so check out your marina’s profile before making your reservation. Sometimes, bigger isn’t better. Well, at least depending on the marina. If you are cruising in a larger vessel, you should check the max length overall (LOA) that a marina can accommodate. So, if you’re rocking a 20ft or a 350ft length boat, you need to check the LOA of a marina. Before making a reservation on dockwa, you can easily input the size of your vessel to see if it is compatible with the marina you’re looking at as you inquire about reservations. And finally, be aware of the security offered at a marina and the general safety of the area before docking. Marina will utilize various security tactics to ensure their boaters and their boats remain safe. Still, it is always good to double-check that your security and safety are a top priority at the marina. - Discovering the Magic of a Boat Tour on the Salish Sea
September 14, 2024 By Georgia Golla Imagine cruising on the Salish Sea, where you're surrounded by the stunning backdrops of the Olympic Mountains and beautiful coastlines. It's more than just a boat ride; it's an immersion into a world teeming with orcas, sea lions, and a rich tapestry of Indigenous culture. You'll find yourself captivated by the sheer beauty and diverse marine life that calls this place home. The Salish Sea: An OverviewNestled between the northwestern coast of Washington State and the southwestern coast of British Columbia, the Salish Sea is an entrancing network of coastal waterways. This intricate marine environment includes the Strait of Georgia, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and Puget Sound. As you explore this area, you'll discover a complex system of islands, inlets, and channels that create a stunning mosaic of natural beauty. The Salish Sea spans over 7,000 square miles, making it one of the largest inland seas in the world. When you set off on a boat tour, you can navigate through its diverse landscape, from rocky shorelines and lush forests to serene bays and bustling harbors. The region's unique geography supports a rich diversity of marine life, including orcas, seals, and a plethora of bird species. You'll also find that the Salish Sea's location offers an ideal climate for year-round exploration. Mild winters and warm summers make it accessible and enjoyable in every season. Whether you're cruising through calm waters or adventuring near rugged coastlines, the Salish Sea provides a mesmerizing backdrop for your boat tour, offering endless opportunities for discovery and wonder. Historical SignificanceThe Salish Sea has long been an essential hub for Indigenous cultures, whose rich history and traditional practices still resonate throughout the region. As you explore this vast waterway, you'll find that it's more than just stunning landscapes and diverse marine life. The Coast Salish peoples have thrived here for thousands of years, using the sea for transportation, food, and trade. Their deep connection to the environment is evident in their sustainable practices and intricate knowledge of the local ecosystems. Planning Your Boat Tour on the Salish SeaWhen planning your boat tour on the Salish Sea, you'll want to take into account the best times to visit, how long the tours typically last, and what weather you might encounter. Always check the weather forecast to guarantee a smooth and enjoyable experience. Best Times to VisitChoosing the best time to visit the Salish Sea can make your boat tour unforgettable. To experience the region's beauty at its peak, consider planning your trip between May and September. During these months, the weather is more predictable, and you'll find the sun shining most days, making for perfect boating conditions. Summer, especially July and August, is ideal if you're looking for warm, sunny days to be out on the water but note it’s a busy time of year. If you prefer fewer crowds, late spring (May to early June) and early fall (September) are excellent choices. The weather is still pleasant, and you'll have a more peaceful experience without the peak-season rush. Springtime brings blooming wildflowers along the shorelines, adding a splash of color to your journey, while early fall offers stunning sunsets and the beginning of the autumn foliage. Whichever season you choose, planning your visit around these months guarantees you'll enjoy the best the Salish Sea has to offer. Duration of ToursPlanning your boat tour on the Salish Sea involves deciding how much time you want to spend exploring the stunning waterways. The duration of your tour can greatly impact your experience, so it's crucial to choose wisely based on your interests and available time. Weather ConsiderationsWeather plays an essential role in the success of your boat tour on the Salish Sea. Before booking, check the local forecast, and a day with the best conditions that work for you. Sunny days offer the best visibility and comfort, enhancing the breathtaking views. However, don't let a cloudy forecast deter you; overcast days can still provide a magical experience, with less glare on the water making it easier to spot marine life. Dress in layers to adapt to changing temperatures and bring waterproof gear in case of rain. Even in summer, mornings and evenings can be chilly, so a light jacket and hat are advisable. High winds might lead to choppy waters and possible tour cancellations, so keeping an eye on wind conditions is wise. Be mindful of the season. Summer offers the most stable weather and warmer temperatures, while spring and fall can be more unpredictable but less crowded. Winter tours can be spectacular and you can take advantage of indoor and outdoor spaces on boats with Argosy Cruises. Planning around the weather guarantees a more enjoyable and safe Salish Sea adventure. Highlights of the Salish SeaAs you commence your boat tour on the Salish Sea, sit back as your guide highlights must-see landmarks and shares the area’s history. You'll also be treated to breathtaking scenic landscapes that are perfect for capturing unforgettable memories. Marine LifeHave you ever wondered what incredible marine life awaits in the Salish Sea?
