The Ultimate Guide to Azzam Yacht: Specs, Design, and More

Ian Fortey

The Azzam was launched in 2013. She quickly became world famous for her incredible design and unheard of size. Even years later the Azzam remains the biggest yacht in the world. The designer has surpassed calling it a superyacht or even a mega yacht and has settled on the term gigayacht.

Who is the Azzam Yacht Owner?

sheikh bin zayed al nahyan yacht

Azzam was owned by Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. He was the second president of the United Arab Emirates until his death in 2022. He had a family fortune of $150 billion and was one of the richest people in the world. His assets were estimated by Forbes to be in the range of $830 billion which is almost unbelievable.

Since his death it is unclear who the current owner of Azzam might be since he had eight children and a wife. The yacht may still be in the family or they may have sold it.

How Much Did Yacht Azzam Cost?

sheikh bin zayed al nahyan yacht

It’s believed that the yacht came with an initial price tag, back in 2013, of $605 million. Though obviously reflecting the size of the yacht, the price is also believed to be elevated due to how it was built. After the initial design, the yacht was built in just three years which is an exceptionally short building time for a project of this size. Rumor has it that 4,000 people worked on the speed build and so some of that money went into ensuring it was built not just to standard but quickly as well.

For a truly mind-blowing bit of trivia, someone took the time to determine the number of man hours that went into the building and did the math on how long it would have took one person by themselves to build the yacht. For it to have been delivered to the owner at the same time in 2013, the builder would have had to start making the yacht back in the year 1737 BC. That’s 3,750 years.

Can You Charter the Azzam

sheikh bin zayed al nahyan yacht

Interestingly enough you can probably find charter listings for the Azzam on the internet. If you can, you’ll also see that there are no available dates. The Azzam seems to have been listed as a charter yacht as something of a trick to avoid certain taxes. In Europe, charter yachts are exempt from a number of taxes so as long as it’s listed as a charter it’s cheaper to operate, even if no one is ever really allowed to charter it.

How Big is the Azzam Yacht?

sheikh bin zayed al nahyan yacht

Azzam holds the title of the longest yacht in the world as of 2023, a title it has held since it was launched back in 2013. In fact, it was only surpassed in length in 2019 by a research and exploration vessel called REV Ocean which straddles the line between a yacht and something else and isn’t, strictly speaking, classified as a private yacht.

Azzam clocks in at 180 meters in length which works out to an astounding 590 feet. The displacement is 13,136 gross tons. The beam is 68 feet but it only has a 14 feet draft. For a yacht its size, the Azzam was able to navigate some relatively shallow waters.

How Fast is Azzam and What Engines Does it Use

sheikh bin zayed al nahyan yacht

The Azzam superyacht has a top speed listed at an impressive 32 knots, something you might not expect from such a large vessel. It’s powered by 2 Diesel 17,524 kW (23,500 hp) engines and 2 Gas Turbine engines with an output of 17,524 kW (23,500 hp). That’s a total of about 47,000 horsepower that was forced out through two Wartsila axial flow Modular waterjets and two boosters. It’s designed to easily travel warm and shallow waters

One source says it’s actually pulling 97,000 hp and that, at top speed, she can burn through 13 tonnes of fuel per hour. In any event, she’s able to cross an entire ocean without worrying about needing to refuel.

Inside the Azzam: Design and Features

sheikh bin zayed al nahyan yacht

Azzam was built by German shipyard Lurssen, builders of many of the world’s biggest superyachts. The bold and elegant exterior design is courtesy of Nauta Yachts while the interior, described as an innovative and timeless design, was handled by Christopher Leoni. It’s said he focused on luxurious décor inspired by the Empire style.

There’s a 95 footlong main salon in the yacht that has a totally open design and no pillars. This room also features a chandelier that was designed such that, even at full speed, it won’t rattle. The furniture on board features marquetry in mother of pearl. Word is it used an entire year’s production worth of it.

There is room for 36 guests on board plus an owner’s suite. A crew of 60 maintain the yacht while it’s underway.

sheikh bin zayed al nahyan yacht

You have to assume a yacht of this size has a lot going for it. The sheer size of the Azzam ensured it had room for a lot of features, including stuff you’d not see on many yachts. Some of the known features of the Azzam include:

  • An on-board submarine
  • An on-board golf training room
  • Fully equipped gym
  • A large tender garage
  • Swimming pool
  • An entire missile defense system that can be deployed if the yacht is attacked
  • An entirely bulletproof master suite

These are just a few of the known features. As you can imagine, a motor yacht with a bulletproof master suite and a missile defense system is one that was also built with privacy and security in mind. As such there are only limited details about what is available inside and very few photos of it as well.

The Bottom Line

The mega yacht known as Azzam was owned by the president of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan until his death in 2022. It is currently unknown who has possession of the vessel. Despite being built in 2013, the yacht remains the longest yacht in the world at an astounding 590 feet.

It was never built to be the largest on purpose and, in fact, designers had to add considerable length in the production process to make sure everything fit and functioned properly which boosted it to the size it is now.

At a price of over $600 million, it’s also one of the most expensive yachts ever build. The details of the interior are limited but it’s known to have remarkable defensive capabilities including a missile defense system.

One of the most remarkable features of the interior layout is a 95 foot long lounge area that has no support pillars as part of a visionary modern design. The beams in the ceiling are a meter thick as a result and the large, glass windows/walls were built to handle extreme stress with 7 cm thick glass.

The world's largest private yacht cost $600 million to build and has held the record for more than 5 years — but it might soon be dethroned

  • The largest motor yacht in the world is a staggering 590 feet long and cost $600 million to build.
  • At its launch in 2013, the Azzam beat out Eclipse, the  superyacht that previously held the title of world's largest, by a full 57 feet.
  • Azzam still holds its record more than five years later — but that might be about to change.

At 590 feet long, the Azzam is known to be the largest superyacht in the world.

Insider Today

Although there is no strict definition, a superyacht is generally understood to be a yacht that is at least 78 feet long , according to Warsash Superyacht Academy.

When it was launched in 2013, the yacht broke the record previously held by the Eclipse, a 533-foot yacht owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich.

"[The Azzam] truly represents another milestone in not only our history, but yachting history as well," Lürssen Yachts managing partner, Peter Lürssen, said in a press release when the Azzam was launched .

Here's a look at the massive yacht.

The 590-foot yacht was finished in April 2013 and belongs to Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, president of the United Arab Emirates.

The Azzam cost an estimated $600 million to build and was constructed over the course of four years.

A representative for Lürssen Yachts said the boat was "without a doubt the most challenging yacht that has ever been built."

The Azzam can move quickly for its size. With its 94,000 horsepower, the boat has hit a speed of 31.5 knots, or about 37 miles per hour, which is believed to the fastest speed for a yacht longer than 300 feet.

Although no interior photos have been made available, the boat is rumored to have a 6,000-square-foot lounge, up to 50 suites, and a 95-foot salon.

But the Azzam might not hold its record for much longer. In 2017, a Norwegian billionaire ordered the construction of a high-tech yacht called the REV that is supposed to be 597 feet long, which would be longer than the Azzam by seven feet.

The BJJ Black Belt Sheikh: The Incredible Journey of Tahnoon the Godfather of Jiu-Jitsu

The BJJ Black Belt Sheikh: The Incredible Journey of Tahnoon the Godfather of Jiu-Jitsu

The UAE’s Sheikh Tahnoon Bin Zayed Al Nahyan may be the most influential figure in Jiu-Jitsu whose last name isn’t Gracie.

Not much is known about the Jiu-Jitsu story of this BJJ black belt that has been training since the mid-90’s.

The competition ADCC World Submission Fighting Championships were the idea and creation of Sheik Tahnoon Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the sixth son of then U.A.E. leader Sheik Zayed, who at the time was completing his advanced studies in the USA. In 1993 after watching the first U.F.C. Sheik Tahnoon became a big fan of MMA. He was struck by the Brazilian jiu-jitsu craze spreading across the US, inspired by the Gracie family from Brazil – in particular Royce Gracie, who won that UFC .

Sheikh Tahnoon started his journey in 1995 as he entered Gracie Barra San Diego and met the then instructor Nelson Monteiro. He introduced himself as “Ben”. He asked if he could join the class and was immediately registered, bought his Gi, and started attending BJJ classes. The student seemed very eager to learn, always among the first to show up at training and among the last to leave. Rumor has it that he would often offer to help in cleaning the mat before training sessions (a ritual left to BJJ white belts or beginners who usually shunned the task). Coming in most martial art classes, a novice or a white belt was given little if any attention. It was during the winter, after months of training and getting to know his new professor, that this humble, polite and noble gentleman student revealed to his professor his real identity: no one other than His Highness Sheikh Tahnoon Bin Zayed Al Nahayan.

Sheikh Tahnoon training with his students (a young Faisal Al Ketbi next to him) and Ryan Gracie

Sheikh Tahnoon training with his students (a young Faisal Al Ketbi next to him) and Ryan Gracie

Sheikh Tahnoon returned to Abu Dhabi in 1998 as a skilled Jiu-Jitsu practitioner and set out to create and build his vision of implementing Martial Arts not only in his native U.A.E. but also creating a standard for which all ground fighting martial arts would be measured. He eventually received his black belt from Renzo Gracie, sometime in the early 2000’s.

To put his vision to reality Sheik Tahnoon developed and propelled a two fold plan; to implement the growth of Martial Arts in the U.A.E. Sheik Tahnoon created the ADCC (Abu Dhabi Combat Club). Sheik Tahnoon converted an idle facility in Abu Dhabi into a Martial Arts Club. He began by hiring top instructors in various martial Arts, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Wrestling, Sambo, Muay Thai etc. and giving them a World class facility to minister their classes and to train top professional fighters. Soon the ADCC became the top facility for learning and training MMA in the Arab World.

He asked Nelson Monteiro to help run it, and they developed a plan to host an event that would promote the sport on a global scale and promote Abu Dhabi as the capital of jiu-jitsu.

Sheikh Tahnoon then created a new competition and a set of neutral rules that would allow practitioners of various grappling arts to compete without strikes, to prove to themselves and others that their style was the most effective “grappling” style available. Thus was born the ADCC.

The ADCC grew in popularity and is now considered the world championship of No Gi grappling arts.

Sheikh Tahnoon regularly trains with all the top Jiu-Jitsu champions. He has them flown in for private sessions in his dojo.

His Jiu-Jitsu is said to be of an elite level, especially since he’s been training for close to 20 years now.

Bruno Frazatto has spent many days training with him and had this to say:

“I was in Abu Dhabi for seven days; it was incredible. We trained plenty of No-Gi and swapped a lot of information. I was surprised by Sheikh Tahnoon’s level of technique and conditioning. We spent three hours training per day, and he is a truly great black belt – he could compete at ADCC no problem!”

Andre Galvao has also trained with the Sheikh and learned a few things from him:

“I would like to say thank you very much to Sheik Tahnoon for the great time and training sessions in Abu Dhabi. I really appreciate the opportunity once again and also for all you already done for our art. I will be using all the techniques I learned with you last week for sure it’s all in my notes book .”

Sheikh Tahnoon is interested in the UFC and also bought a stake in UFC in January 2010.

Sheikh Tahnoon’s older brother, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, is also instrumental in the growth of Jiu-Jitsu on a local and worldwide level.

He developed the plan of of having Jiu-Jitsu taught at UAE schools. A long-time advocate of the sport, Sheikh Mohammed has said more martial arts training centres are needed across the Emirates to provide facilities for those who practise Jiu-Jitsu. Sheikh Mohammed also issued instructions to sponsor distinguished Jiu-Jitsu players and urged the private and public sectors to support them so that they can excel and represent the country in championships. The directives include the sponsorship of talented players at schools and universities so that they can continue studying besides participating in the sport.

Khaled bin mohamed bin zayed witnesses signing ceremony for adnoc and exxonmobil partnering in world’s largest low-carbon hydrogen facility.

ADNOC to acquire a 35% equity stake in Baytown, Texas, project that will produce virtually carbon-free hydrogen

The strategic investment will support both companies’ net zero ambitions, accelerate decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectors, and meet rising demand for low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia

Facility expects to convert U.S.-produced natural gas into virtually carbon-free hydrogen, with ~98% of CO 2 removed, advancing U.S. competitiveness and supporting U.S. jobs

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates & SPRING, Texas, September 04, 2024 --( BUSINESS WIRE )--His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, has witnessed the signing of an agreement today that ADNOC will acquire a 35% equity stake in Exxon Mobil Corporation’s (NYSE: XOM) proposed low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia production facility in Baytown, Texas.

The agreement represents a significant investment in the United States’ (U.S.) energy production and the global energy transition. It will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions across hard-to-decarbonize sectors, including industry, energy and transportation, meet rising demand for lower-carbon fuels, and accelerate a net-zero future.

Contingent on supportive government policy and necessary regulatory permits, the facility is expected to be the world’s largest of its kind upon startup, capable of producing up to 1 billion cubic feet (bcf) daily of low-carbon hydrogen, which is virtually carbon-free with approximately 98% of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) removed and more than 1 million tons of low-carbon ammonia per year. A final investment decision (FID) is expected in 2025 with anticipated startup in 2029.

His Excellency Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and ADNOC Managing Director and Group CEO, said: "This strategic investment is a significant step for ADNOC as we grow our portfolio of lower-carbon energy sources and deliver on our international growth strategy. We look forward to partnering with ExxonMobil on this low carbon-intensity and technologically advanced project to meet rising demand and help decarbonize heavy-emitting sectors."

The facility will leverage advanced carbon capture and storage technologies to reduce emissions associated with hydrogen production. Creating U.S. jobs and supporting community development initiatives, the project’s construction will also bring substantial economic benefits to Baytown, the Houston area and Texas.

Darren Woods, ExxonMobil Chairman and CEO, said: "We appreciate His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s support for this groundbreaking partnership. This is a world-scale project in a new global energy value chain. Bringing on the right partners is key to accelerating market development, and we’re pleased to add ADNOC’s proven experience and global market insights to our Baytown facility."

Following FID for the project, ADNOC intends to support ongoing community initiatives in the Baytown area, in line with the company’s commitment to sustainability and education in the locations where it operates. This commitment reflects ADNOC’s broader strategy to foster community development and ensure that the benefits of its projects extend beyond environmental gains to include social and economic advancements.
