Power catamarans have seen a surge in popularity, growing both in size and appeal. These cruise-focused yachts offer homelike comfort, fuel efficiency and user-friendly operation, making them a favorite among avid travelers. Their popularity extends to the bareboat charter market for the same reasons.

In this article, we explore the world’s top power catamarans, ranging from a 36-footer ideal for a cruising couple to a 78-footer perfect for entertaining friends and family. The propulsion options are diverse, including outboards, diesel inboards, hybrids, and even all-solar setups.

Top Luxury Power Catamarans

The following power catamarans are all vessels we’ve reviewed. They are listed in no particular order.

Fountaine Pajot MY44

The  Fountaine Pajot MY44 , a creation of Italian architect Pierangelo Andreani and French designer Daniel Andrieu, has a main deck that’s open from the aft-deck seating all the way forward to the starboard helm station. The sense of spaciousness is significant, for several reasons. First, four glass panels aft can all slide to port, creating an indoor-outdoor space with the aft deck and salon. In the salon, 32-inch-high windows extend for 12 feet down the sides of the yacht, with three sections per side, bringing in natural light along with the three forward panes that comprise the windshield. Finally, 6-foot-6-inch headroom provides vertical clearance, with a 21-foot-7-inch beam that adds interior roominess while keeping the yacht stable.

Silent Yachts 60

Solar panels, ocean-crossing range and self-sufficiency define the electric Silent-Yachts 60 power catamaran. If there was any question that the “Tesla moment” has arrived in yachting, the Silent 60 clearly provides a positive response. Consider, for a moment, crossing oceans in silence at 5 to 6 knots without consuming a drop of fuel and never needing to plan your course between fuel stops. Imagine sitting at anchor and running the air conditioning all night, not to mention all the galley appliances plus the washer-dryer, without the hum or fumes from a genset.

Horizon PC74

As founder and director of The Powercat Company, a Horizon Power Catamarans distributor, Stuart Hegerstrom had long believed that catamaran builders needed to design their yachts to more stylish standards.

“The boats were very boxy,” he says, based on his years of experience with cats in the charter market. He and his partner, Richard Ford, asked Horizon to produce models that had high-end finishes and looked good inside and out.

The Horizon team brought in mega-yacht designer JC Espinosa to work with its own craftsmen. The result aboard the  Horizon PC74  is a catamaran with exterior styling, layout and functionality that should appeal to private and charter owners alike.

The Aquila 36  is a departure from her sisterships in that she is an outboard-powered, express-cruiser-style catamaran, but she also adheres to MarineMax’s philosophies.

With a single main living level from bow to stern and a beam of 14 feet 7 inches, the Aquila 36 is like a bowrider on steroids. She has seating that can handle 20 adults for outings and barbecues, and there are two staterooms below, one in each hull, for family weekending. The staterooms have nearly queen-size berths, en suite heads, stowage and 6-foot-6-inch headroom.

Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat

Lagoon is a division of Groupe Beneteau, the world’s largest builder of sailing yachts, and the  Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat  is a developmental sistership of its Seventy 7 super sailing cat. The Seventy series yachts are built at Construction Navale Bordeaux in France, which had to add a new yard to construct these catamarans because they require separate stern molds for the power and sail versions.

Horizon PC68

Multihull yachts ride differently than monohulls, often counteracting the sea’s motion for a smoother, more stable ride. On the Horizon PC68 , sharp hull entries make head seas seem gentle, and a Humphree stabilization system with blades reduces roll. Horizon uses SCRIMP construction for resin saturation that maximizes strength with an 111,112-pound displacement. And with a 5-foot-4-inch draft, the PC68 invites island cruising.

Two Oceans 555

With 27-knot speed, house-like volume, an on-deck master and top-tier tech, the Two Oceans 555 is a formidable power catamaran. Dave Jirikovic of HMY Yachts was on a quest. The sales broker was looking for the meanest, nastiest patch of Gulf Stream he could find to show a potential client what the Two Oceans 555 power cat could handle. And just as he had intended to show us, the broad-shouldered power cat didn’t even notice. He even dropped the single-lever throttles back to idle and left the 25-foot-wide Two Oceans 555 beam-on to another set of square-edged seas. The 55-footer brushed that off too. Jirikovic tried quartering into the seas—never a happy angle for catamarans—and the yacht drowsed through them.

Fitted with the optional twin 300-horsepower Volvo Penta D4 diesels, the  Lagoon 630 MY  burns only 1.64 gph total at 6 knots, giving a theoretical range of 2,952 nautical miles with standard tankage of 793 gallons. Hull No. 1 had an optional 502-gallon tank, giving it transatlantic range.

The best small catamarans for cruising are affordable and comfortable, making great sailboats for a number of different purposes. If you’re looking for the best small catamarans to start your cruising life then look no further!

When searching for a catamaran for our adventures we scoured the internet for any and all information we could find on just about every size, shape, and model!

Although in the end, we opted for a bigger catamaran, in the hopes of having more family and friends on board, we did heavily research the best small catamarans as an option.

Each small catamaran has different pros and cons. As with every sailboat, there will be compromises, but hopefully, this post will help you firm up what you’re really looking for in a multihull and find the right smaller catamaran for you!

Here are what we consider the best small cruising catamarans out there, costing anywhere from $40,000 to $300,000. You can also read up on the average costs of sailboats here.

Why Choose A Small Catamaran For Cruising?

The main advantage to choosing a small catamaran for cruising has to be the cost. Not only are smaller sailboats cheaper to buy initially, but they are also cheaper to maintain and to dock in marinas or dry storage.

Why buy a small catamaran over a monohull? This isn’t the post to go into the pros and cons of multihulls vs monohulls, but a few of the main reasons you might prefer to buy a small cat over a bigger, cheaper monohull is the living space and the comfort underway and at anchor.

Living on a sailboat is very different from taking the boat out for a sporty sail every now and again. Having a catamaran over a monohull means you won’t be heeling or rolling at anchor half as much, you can leave out your coffee cup, and you have the space you need to spread out a little.

A small catamaran will enable the more comfortable lifestyle you’re seeking at a more reasonable price tag. So what’s not to love about small cruising multihulls?

The Downsides To Small Multihulls For Cruisers

Of course, just with everything in sailing, there are always compromises to be made when it comes to small multihulls.

One of the biggest downsides for cruisers is the weight issue smaller catamarans present. You won’t be able to carry half as much as you would on a larger catamaran or monohull, which might be a problem if you live onboard full time.

The other negative is that smaller boats usually aren’t quite as seaworthy as larger ones. You might find you’re limited to coastal cruising if you choose a small catamaran, so make sure you have your cruising intentions in mind before you buy.

Another big thing to look out for when it comes to choosing the right small cat for you, is the bridge deck clearance. This is often worse on smaller catamarans, and can cause nasty slamming in any sort of sea, both when sailing and at anchor.

With these downsides in mind, we’ve split this post into the best small catamarans for ocean sailing and the best for coastal cruising. Obviously this is a little subjective, as many people have sailed around the world in much smaller and less seaworthy vessels!

The Best Small Catamarans For Ocean Cruising

#1 wharram tiki.

  • Suitable for: Bluewater sailing
  • Fixed Keels
  • Draft (max): 2.08′
  • Engines: Single outboard, though some versions have twin inboards
  • Price: Roughly $100,000

We have lusted after the Wharram catamarans since our adventures began and would have opted for one of these if we had found one for sale this side of the pond.

Designed by the legendary James Wharram, these small multihulls are pretty unique. They are based on the Polynesian catamaran design, and the plans enable you to self-build these boats if you have the time, money, and space for a project of this magnitude.

If you aren’t keen on taking on a project then you can commission a boat builder to complete the design for you, or buy one second-hand. The advantages of having one made yourself are that you can tweak things to your personal taste, and you can even contact the Wharrams themselves to see if they can adjust the designs for individual requests.

The Wharram catamarans have a lot of charm dues to their traditional design, and the old-fashioned appeal continues inside the boat too. You won’t find the same huge hull space as some of the modern design catamarans now have, but the outside entertainment space is perfect for entertaining.

These small catamarans don’t have an inside space across the hulls, so all of your inside living space is below. If you’re used to monohulls then this won’t be a problem but if you like the idea of a galley-up then these boats aren’t for you.

Wharram catamarans, especially the Tiki 38, have great reputations as around the world, bluewater boats. They have fantastic bridge deck clearance so slamming is minimum and they sail well.

Most models have a double cabin and two singles, a galley, a head, and a small salon area below. They are smaller catamarans than many newer 38ft multihulls but this does make them more affordable.

A big appeal for us was the fact these boats are designed to be self-made. Although a secondhand model could potentially come with a lot of problems (get a decent survey before you buy!) it does mean that almost everything onboard can be self-fixed. This is a huge bonus if you plan on sailing your small catamaran around the world.

Another thing we loved about these smaller catamarans is the fact they have outboard engines, which we felt would be easier to maintain and replace if necessary. This is a personal choice though so consider this before you get your heart set on one!

One of the downsides to the Tiki 38 is that there aren’t many of them around. These are unique boats and they don’t come on the market frequently. When they do, they tend to be scattered all over the world so you’ll have to be prepared to travel to find one!

#2 Prout Snowgoose 37 : Small Catamaran For Ocean Cruising

Prout catamarans are a popular choice for cruisers, and you’ll find many owners who have circumnavigated in them. The Snowgoose is no exception. Prout no longer exists as a company, as it was bought by Broadblue in the 90s.

Broadblue still makes catamarans today, and they have very similar features to the original Prouts, though obviously they are far fancier and have all the benefits of a more modern design!

The Snowgoose is a great small multihull to go for as you get quite a lot of space inside and out. We weren’t sure about the berth in the salon area, but it might make a great space for a baby or small child while underway!

The compromise in the Prout Snowgoose is the bridge deck clearance and this was something that put us off these smaller cruising catamarans. A low bridge deck clearance makes the boat slam in waves, both at anchor and underway.

#8 PDQ 36 : A Small Catamaran Without Too Much Slamming

  • Suitable for: Bluewater
  • Draft (max): 2.82′
  • Engines: Twin inboard or outboard
  • Price: Over $100,000

These small catamarans have an excellent reputation among cruisers because of their solid build and use of decent materials. They come with either outboard engines for coastal cruising or inboard engines designed to withstand offshore use.

If you like the sound of the PDQ 32 but need a little more room then you’ve got that here! It’s also a boat that people have crossed oceans in, though you might want to consider something more tried and tested like the Prout Snowgoose or the Wharram if you’re planning longer ocean sails.

The boat has three cabins, a galley, salon and head, but there’s a more spacious feel compared to the smaller model. Again, the bridge deck clearance is good so you shouldn’t experience too much slamming.

#9 Lagoon 380 : One Of The Most Popular Small Multihulls

The Lagoon 380 is one of the most popular catamarans out there, and you’ve probably already spotted a lot of them in your search! This is a great option if modern cats appeal to you, as it’s pretty ‘with the times’ as far as smaller catamarans go!

There are lots of different layouts of this boat available all over the world. Some were built for charter with numerous berths and others were commissioned for couples or families with differing cabin and head options.

This is a proven catamaran from a reputable company, but obviously with so many of these boats out there, they come in a range of conditions. Make sure you get a thorough survey done before purchase!

Lagoon 37 TPI

  • Draft (max): 4′
  • Engines: Twin inboard diesels 
  • Price: Over $100,000 USD 

This is the smallest catamaran built by Lagoon, and unfortunately there aren’t many of them out there. These boats were built mainly for the charter market, and have a smaller rig than some similar sized catamarans.

There are two big queen-size forward doubles port and starboard and a smaller double in the starboard hull aft. The galley and salon are designed to be simple and timeless, with none of the fancy trims you’ll find in the newer Lagoons.

As this boat was intended for charter it probably wouldn’t make a great ocean-going vessel. For starters, it isn’t designed to carry too much in the way of provisions. That’s not to say it won’t be a suitable bluewater boat with a few tweaks. Sailors who have circumnavigated in them have increased sail area and added folding props to get more speed from the vessel.

#11 Catalac 9M/30

  • Engines:  two outboard engines or one diesel engine
  • Price:  from $50,000

The Catalac 9M is a little different to a lot of the catamarans on this list, as it was built for sailing in the North Sea! This is a great small catamaran for anyone wanting a boat built to be safe!

The bridge deck clearance is reasonable but the boat is light, which can make it more prone to slamming. The unique feature of this small sailboat is the hard dodger, designed as somewhere safe and dry to stand in bad weather.

It sails well, though like a lot of catamarans there is technique involved in getting it to tack smoothly. Once you’ve got the hang of though, this boat will make good speeds for its size.

The Best Small Catamarans For Coastal Cruising

  • Suitable for: Coastal
  • Draft (max): 3.62′
  • Engines: Twin inboard
  • Price: Up to $300,000 for a newer model

The Mahe 36 is the smallest of the Fountaine Pajot range, and these small catamarans can go for a heafty budget if you find a newer model!

This tiny multihull packs a lot into a small space, and because of its modern features, you’ll feel like you’re in a much bigger boat when you step aboard.

This boat is a fast mover, with an ok bridge clearance and some attractive upgrades compared to their last small catamaran design. Most notably the full-length hard top bimini which has the reviewers raving!

If you have the money to splash out on a newer, more expensive small catamaran then this should definitely be on your list to consider! Although they come with a large price tag, these small catamarans are considerably cheaper new than some of the bigger models.

#4 Gemini 105Mc (34ft)

Suitable for: Coastal cruising Centreboards Draft (max): 5′ Engines:  Single inboard Price:  from $80,000

The Gemini 105Mc is still in production in the US, which speaks to its popularity. Obviously if you buy new you’ll pay a much higher price! This is one of the smallest catamarans on the list, but it’s still a great option for coastal cruising (or some have even successfully completed ocean passages on them in relative comfort).

For a small multihull this boat sails pretty well and is fast for a coastal cruiser. The living space is decent with good headroom. It has two double cabins and a master bedroom, and the interior finishes are nice too.

A big negative to this boat is the bridge deck clearance which really isn’t amazing, but as we said at the start, there’s always a compromise! This is a sporty-looking little catamaran that’s a good contender for the top smallest catamarans out there!

#5 EndeavourCat 36

Suitable for: Coastal cruising Fixed keels Draft (max): 3′ Engines:  two inboard Price:  from $100

Designed and built by Endeavour Catamaran, these American built boats are great cruising catamarans. A big advantage to this little multihull is that it will fit into most monohull slips, so if you anticipate using marinas a lot then this might be the small catamaran for you!

This isn’t a slow boat, and owners report speeds of 8-9 knots. Bear in mind though that the narrow beam does make it less suitable for any offshore passages. It has good interior space with 6′ standing headroom throughout, three double cabins, and a decent-sized galley below. The salon area can seat 6 people comfortably.

This cat is great for single-handed sailors, as all the lines lead to the cockpit and the main and jib are completely self-tacking.

#6 Prout Event 34

These multihulls are quite hard to find, but if you like the Snowgoose but are on a tighter budget then they might be just what you’re looking for. They share lots of features with the Snowgoose and look very similar, only smaller!

There are three cabins, one head, a salon, and a galley, only they are rather squeezed in compared to the larger model. Personally, we thought there was plenty of space for a smaller sailboat but it’s worth seeing them in person if you’re keen on this model.

They do have the same downsides as the Snowgoose though, with limited headroom and low bridge deck clearance. These boats are known for their slamming!

Coastal Engines:  twin outboards Price:  from $80,000, used

The PDQ 32 is a great budget option catamaran and should be cheap(ish) to buy second hand and maintain. With two outboards that are easy to replace on a smaller budget, you’re looking at some of the usual pinch points on a boat becoming a lot more affordable!

This small catamaran only has two cabins, so sleeps less than a lot of the boats on this list, but it is roomier than you’d imagine inside with a decent galley and salon area. It has decent bridge deck clearance so shouldn’t slam too much in any waves.

This isn’t a boat for longer passages as it is a little small (and perhaps underpowered) to face serious weather. If you’re searching for something to potter around in then this is a fun boat to sail and live in!

These South African catamarans are great little coastal cruising catamarans that are hard to come by anywhere other than South Africa!

They’re pretty tiny, but have enough space for a galley, 3 or 4 cabins, and 1 or 2 heads. Some of the designs even have a bathtub, which speaks of their liveaboard suitability rather than their sail performance!

These boats are some of the smallest multihulls on this list, so don’t expect much in terms of headroom or bridge deck clearance. That being said, if you’re looking for a tiny catamaran to live on and you are prepared to compromise on sailing ability then these are a solid choice.

We have heard that the build quality can vary somewhat with these multihulls, so make sure you do some solid research and get a good surveyor when buying one of these. If you get a good version then they can make really solid boats.

#13 EndeavourCat 30

This is a boat built for comfort over all else, so if you’re looking for a budget catamaran to live in then take a look at the endeavourcat 30. Some people don’t like the boxy design, but we quite liked how it looked in the water. I guess it’s personal taste!

This sailboat has two double cabins, a decent sized galley and salon for the size of the boat, and a head. The bridge deck clearance is low so that’s something to bear in mind before you buy, but the headroom is good (another reason why this would make a good liveaboard catamaran).

IFC is Insetta Boatwork's Internal Foiling System.

You can expect a significant increase in cruise speed; Improved handling and stability in rough conditions; Better acceleration; A boat that is less affected by increased payload; A 20-40% increase in fuel efficiency; and a 20-40% further cruise range! Additionally, the IFC technology will also provide a drier ride in choppy conditions and Provide for more responsiveness when turning at speed!

The system is a fixed setup, there is nothing to operate and there are zero moving parts.

The IFC Technology in effect smooths out rough seas by allowing the boat to run from wave crest to wave crest at a relatively smooth and stable attitude. The IFC System creates lift which help to in effect “Carry” the hull higher in the water. The system acts as a set of wings carrying the boat at speed, keeping the hull from having to follow each wave across its entire contour. In other words the surface of the waves have less effect on the hull as the IFC system is lifting the boat. Additionally, the aerodynamic lift created by the catamaran hulls creates even more lift at the bow of the boat, keeping the nose high and preventing the “slamming” or sneezing found in other catamaran hulls.

No, you don’t. The foils are flush mounted to the bottom of the keels of each sponson (as well as up in the tunnel.) At its centerline the main foil of the IFC system is only slightly lower than the keel line. The boat will easily load onto a standard catamaran trailer. There is no big contraption hanging way down under the boat.

Remember, the foils are INTERNAL to the tunnel. At its lowest point the main foil is only slightly lower than the hull and is higher than the props. Because of this the odds of striking the foils are extremely low. The boat is designed to be lifted by the foil. The structural integrity of the foil system is such that the weight of the boat could be supported many times over by the foil. As such, if you did somehow manage to strike the foil on something EXTREMELY SUBSTANTIAL, like a stone shoal, the likely outcome is that you may (in a very worst case scenario) bend or break a foil wing. If that were to happen, you could still operate the boat to port with the remaining foils. The IFC foils are made from a very high-grade stainless steel and designed to meet or exceed relevant guidelines for impact and strength.

As water travels through the tunnel and around the foil, a tremendous vortex is created. This force keeps most debris from being trapped in the tunnel or around the foil. Between the pressure of the air moving through the tunnel, and the vortex created in the water, the tunnel and foils will stay clean and clear.

The outboards of the 35 IFC are mounted on a slight outward angle to place the propellers properly to maximize the thrust and flow efficiency created as the water travels through the tunnel and around the foils. This mounting also helps the boat to lean into a corner, much like a monohull.

Firstly, we’d ask, “Why would you want to?” But the short answer is no. IFC is an integrated system that is integral to the design of the boat.

The short answer is that boats with technology similar to IFC have been in use for many years, but not in the recreational market. Commercial and Military applications are quite prevalent. The initial design of a hull and system like this is quite complex and can be cost prohibitive. We at Insetta feel the gains in efficiency, speed, range and ride quality far outweigh the initial design and build cost.

Upon deciding to build a foiling Cat, Insetta assembled a team of naval Architects and Marine Engineers to refine an existing and proven design. Using their own state of the art construction techniques, Insetta brought an application specific version to the fiberglass Center Console market.

Why did Insetta Boatworks decide to build a boat with IFC?

For decades, Hydrofoil power boats have proven to be the most efficient craft for a variety of offshore operations.

While pursuing a B.S. in physics in 1960, Victor Insetta was employed doing anti-submarine research that utilized high speed Deep-V patrol boats equipped with hydrofoils. Their ability to pursue submarines at high speed, operate safely offshore, and, being foil borne: allowed their hull to run clear of the water avoiding direct hits from torpedoes. Decades later, Vic and his family rode comfortably on hydrofoil ferries in Italy, flying over white capped waves in the bay of Naples.

In 2017, The Insetta 45 was chosen to be the official chase boat of the America’s cup! Four 45’ Insetta’s catamarans were shipped to Bermuda to assist at various cup events. Sailboats, competing from several countries, were catamarans with hydrofoils ! The Insetta 45’s ran parallel to these “foiling sail cats” to assist with TV coverage. The sailing cats were traveling at speeds approaching 50 mph, 2 ½ times the wind speed . Efficient … you bet . They could also turn on a dime at over 40 mph…

It became obvious: that a foiling cat would make a great offshore outboard power boat… Many foil power boat designs in the past, had wide foils that stuck out the sides, increasing their beam and draft. It made them difficult to dock, and they couldn’t operate in shallow waters. Joel Shine (chief operating officer) of Insetta Boatworks found a catamaran design that had hydrofoils mounted in the tunnel, (that location between the tunnel walls actually improves their efficiency), and does not add to its draft. Further improvements could be added by using our ultra-light high strength infused composite construction.

Joel, Vic and our technical staff reviewed the foiling cat’s initial specifications and performance data, and then sea trialed two foiling cats with internal hydrofoils. Our staff includes a second physicist and pilot… Glen Dobbs. We are all active boaters and we determined we would build our version of a foiling outboard powered cat. We contacted a Naval architect, who designed several successful foiling power cats . He is now a member of our technical staff.

Our 35 “foiling cat” design has set the standard for Foil-Assisted Sportfishing boats. Perhaps counterintuitively, this is the quietest Aspen ever, and she scoots across the bay smoothly, under power from either one or both of her outboards rated for 200- and 70-horsepower engines. The outboards provide a balance for our Power Proa hull, though we changed the starboard hull so it no longer has the keel form and prop pocket. The engines are rated for the same maximum rpm range of 5,000 to 6,000, have the same lower-unit gear ratio, and use similarly pitched props. The hull shape at the bow still lets the boat run in balance: No helm correction is needed, and hands-free tracking is on par with our inboard design.

The C107 has a comfortable salon area with galley to port and a dinette to starboard. The galley is equipped with a propane stove and oven, and a refrigerator. The dinette seats four and converts to a double berth. Belowdecks, accommodations include a master forward with a king-size berth, and a separate enclosed head with shower, and there’s a quarter-berth beneath the galley. She’s nicely appointed with Burmese teak, a custom-selected tile backsplash, and more. The C107 is a true cruising yacht that makes the most of today’s outboards for quiet, efficient operation.

DeLand power boat builder indicted in Ohio, sued for $270K by New York man for fraud

New York resident, Terrance Weber said he traded in his 30-foot Spectre performance boat to Todd Lamb of DeLand in an agreement to have a new boat built. Lamb took his money and did not deliver on the new boat nor did he return the trade-in. Weber is suing Lamb in a Volusia County court for more than $270,000.

(This story was updated because an earlier version contained inaccurate information. Karen Lamb was never an owner of Spectre Marine LLC but did work there briefly. Also, the story was updated to include the Lambs' current marital status and to add a comment from Karen Lamb regarding the Ohio litigation.)

Terrance Weber wanted to repower his 30-foot Spectre performance boat so he reached out to a DeLand company that builds the "go-fast" water vessels. But three years later he's still in "paradise without his boat" and out more than $270,000, according to a lawsuit.

It doesn't look like he will be getting any relief anytime soon, either. In July, the owner of the boat-making company, Todd Allen Lamb, 50, and his ex-wife, Karen Nicole Lamb, 42, were each indicted in Ohio on nine counts, including felony charges of grand theft.

And in a bizarre twist, Weber is also in trouble with the law. On December 24, 2022, he allegedly paid a man to steal a boat from Lamb's DeLand shop and faces charges of burglary and grand theft of more than $100,000, according to court records.

It is a complex tale that is playing itself out in courtrooms in Bellefontaine, Ohio, and Volusia County, Florida, with no obvious takeaways other than to "let the buyer beware" when it comes to high-speed boats and that it doesn't pay to take the law into your own hands, even if you feel like you've been stiffed.

Who is Todd Lamb?

Todd Lamb and his family got a warm welcome when he relocated his high-performance boat company, Spectre Powerboats , to a 26,000-square-foot space at DeLand Municipal Airport from central Ohio, according to a December 2021 press release.

“We are very happy to be in Florida, closer to 85 percent of our customers,” he said in the Team Volusia Economic Development Corp. release. “And we are especially glad to have landed in the DeLand area of ​​Volusia County. The area offers an exceptional quality of life and an excellent business climate. “

The release says Lamb is a veteran of boat building and racing, starting in 1992 at the age of 18 when he built small racing boats out of crashed boat parts.

“I couldn’t afford to build new ones, so I built new boats from recycled and discarded boats. In a way I sneaked into the industry," he said.

Government officials welcomed Lamb and his wife Karen, who worked at the company, as well as their teenage daughter.

“The addition of Spectre Powerboats to our corporate roster. . . underscores DeLand’s role in hosting sports-related activities," said Nick Conte, DeLand's economic development manager at the time.

“We welcome Spectre Powerboats to our community and our growing list of marine manufacturers,” echoed Volusia County Manager George Recktenwald. “Spectre’s move to Volusia County is another indication that this is a great place to do business.”

Lamb said Team Volusia was instrumental in the site search process and made presentations to local partners who could provide services and support to Spectre. “Your advice and assistance helped us make many important decisions in a timely manner, keeping our relocation on time,” he said.

The locals may not have been so helpful if they had done a Google search on the new resident.

Prior to moving to DeLand, the Lambs were living in Bellefontaine, Ohio, a small town northeast of Dayton. According to the FBI, in October 2013, Todd Lamb pleaded guilty in the U.S. Southern District Court of Ohio to selling a Mack dump truck to more than one buyer.

Selling the same truck twice

After he delivered the truck to the first buyer, he falsely told the second buyer that the truck had been stolen from the seaport in Jacksonville. He told the second buyer, who was from Wyoming, that he would refund the purchase price but did not, FBI investigators said.

The Wyoming buyer got part of his money eight years later when Lamb pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful interstate transportation of stolen motor vehicles, and one count of wire fraud.

Investigators said Lamb and his wife, Karen, conducted consignment sales and auctions of vehicles, equipment, and other goods and merchandise under the companies Almite Services and Almite Auctions. He also stole and sold vehicles through his businesses, including a Caterpillar backhoe to the Wyoming buyer.

The Columbus News Dispatch reported in 2014 that Todd Lamb was sentenced to a year in prison.

According to the FBI, Karen Lamb pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of making false statements relating to the transfer of a vehicle title and was sentenced to six months’ probation in October 2012.

In the Ohio indictment, announced last summer, Karen Lamb and Todd Lamb were each charged with three counts of fourth-degree felony grand theft, third-degree felony aggravated theft, theft from an elderly person, third-degree felony grand theft, fourth-degree felony defrauding creditors, second-degree felony telecommunications fraud, and engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity.

The indictment, provided to the Daytona Beach News-Journal by the Logan County Clerk of Courts, shows the two engaged in the alleged criminal activity starting in 2017.

Between Dec. 19, 2017, and June 19, 2020, the Lambs "deprived an Ohio man of property and services" and stole $143,650 along with two Mercury boat engines, the document states.

From Feb. 9, 2018, through Oct. 10, 2018, the Lambs reportedly stole $209,339 from another Ohio man.

An elderly man from the state lost $300,462 to the Lambs who never delivered property or services to him, the court document outlined.

All the funds taken from the Ohio residents were paid to the Lambs to build boats, said Eric Stewart, the Logan County prosecutor handling the Lambs' case.

"They never got their boats and they did not get their money back," Stewart said.

The Lambs also deprived Caterpillar, a heavy equipment company, of two hydraulic excavators in March and December 2020. And, the couple also defrauded Caterpillar as creditors of more than $7,500 but less than $150,000, the Ohio prosecutor said.

"He signed a lease putting little money down, and then he sells the machines and never paid the lease," Stewart said.

Stewart said Todd was released by the Ohio court but a GPS ankle monitor was placed on him until his trial next year. Karen Lamb was released on her own recognizance, the Logan County prosecutor said.

After this story was first posted, Karen Lamb reached out to the News-Journal in an email: "It is also worth noting that while Todd Lamb and I are both defendants in the court case in Ohio, we are NOT defendants together. I do NOT nor wish to have any contact with him."

Reached at Spectre Powerboats business telephone number, and asked about the allegations, Todd Lamb said that he had no idea what a News-Journal reporter was asking him about and that the reporter had the wrong number and hung up.

But Lamb did reach out to his alleged victims after he was arrested in Volusia County on Ohio warrants and released on $10,000 bail.

Weber provided the News-Journal with a voicemail he claims Todd Lamb left him. In that voicemail, Lamb identifies himself and says he wants to make things right with Weber and the Ohio victims.

"I'm sure you guys are very upset with me, but I'd like to see if there's a way we can work all this out," he said in the voicemail recording.

Failure to deliver

In November 2021 Weber, of New York, agreed to have Todd Lamb build him a new 32-foot Spectre performance catamaran for $340,000, including a trade-in, he said.

"When he dropped in an amazing manufacturer's discount, I was sold," Weber recalled in a telephone interview of the deal he made with Lamb.

As part of the agreement, Weber traded in his used Spectre boat for $80,000 and put down a $10,000 deposit on Nov. 1, 2021. According to a lawsuit filed by Weber, he has paid Lamb, including the trade-in value, $271,787.

For the first four months, everything appeared normal but then Lamb stopped giving Weber updates on the boat. The New York businessman then hired another boating company in Florida to handle the boat building.

"He (Todd Lamb) started becoming adversarial and I wondered why he was giving us such an attitude for simple questions he was being asked," Weber said. "Then I Googled him and found that he had served time for scamming people, that he was under investigation for fraud, and I knew I was screwed."

When Weber kept asking Lamb to provide status reports, he eventually asked the man for his trade-in back. Then Lamb called the police on him, Weber said,

An October 2022 DeLand police report shows Lamb reported Weber's constant contact and asked the police to tell Weber to stop calling him and his employees.

Weber said he tried reaching an agreement with Lamb to get his boat "as is" but Lamb refused. In the end, Lamb did not deliver the new boat and did not return the trade-in, Weber said.

Weber, a small businessman, said the theft has had an emotional impact on him.

"I've laughed, I've cried. I've been through every emotional gamut you could go through," Weber said. "I mean, look at the amount of money they are stealing. It's like taking a house from someone."

Weber said he created a social media page denouncing the Lambs' activities and was contacted by victims in Ohio and Georgia, who have had similar experiences with Lamb.

Weber is suing the Lambs hoping to recoup what he said he paid the couple between November 2021 and July 2022 - $271.787 - for the boat they did not deliver, documents detail.

Victim becomes a thief?

Weber said his frustration grew even more when he tried to report Lamb's criminal activity to the DeLand Police Department. He said he made special trips to DeLand to visit the police station to file a complaint but that if "he got more than 30 seconds at the plexi glass," the front lobby's window, it was too much.

Weber said he sent DeLand police a document drafted by his New York lawyer, Mark Seidenfeld, on Dec. 25, 2022, outlining what Lamb did but police did not act on it.

"They told me that Todd Lamb was a legitimate businessman and that my issue was a civil case," Weber said. "But the police readily arrested me over my very own boat."

According to a DeLand police arrest report, on Dec. 24, they responded to an alarm at Lamb's shop. Lamb told them a boat had been taken. He told police that he had an ongoing civil issue with Weber and that Weber had said he would be taking a boat from his business, the report said.

DeLand police spokeswoman Vicki Karr said there is no record of Weber contacting the police prior to the Dec. 24 grand theft arrest.

Police noted that a bay door had been cut open. State police in South Carolina later spotted the 32-foot boat being towed north on Interstate 95 and stopped the vehicle. They arrested Ronnie Dominguez, of Pennsylvania, who said Weber had paid him to tow the boat to New York, an arrest report states.

Weber told investigators that he had paid a sum of money for the boat and that he and Lamb had reached an agreement where he could pick it up. This was outlined in a letter to DeLand police from Weber's New York attorney dated Dec. 25, 2022.

Another lawsuit filed

Weber sued Spectre Marine LLC in April. He alleges in the last five years, the Lambs have opened different boat manufacturing companies under the Spectre name and that they started Spectre Marine, LLC., doing business as Spectre Powerboats at the Summerhill Drive location in DeLand.

"They were not conducting business at that location. It was a criminal enterprise," Weber said.

Lambs depend on ill-gotten proceeds

The lawsuit filed by Weber argues that the Lambs depend on ill-gotten proceeds as their income and have engaged in racketeering activities related to custom powerboat manufacturing.

The Lambs built the boat for Weber but kept increasing the value and then claimed Weber owed them $55,000. The Lambs then sold the boat to a third party, the suit states.

"I am hoping the court will make a judgment against Todd Lamb and his Spectre company," Weber said. "I got robbed, dude. I got straight robbed."

In a statement, DeLand officials said they had a minimal role in getting the Lambs to locate in the city.

"Like any business that relocates to our community, we expect customers to be treated fairly and ethically," they said. "If the allegations are indeed true, we hope justice is served and that those wronged are able to pursue remedies available through our court system,” the statement read.

Recktenwald did not respond to an inquiry from the News-Journal asking for comment. Three Team Volusia executives also did not respond to emails from the News-Journal seeking comment.

Weber awaits his fate in criminal court.
