BOAT RENTAL REVIEWS
The boat rental folks at Sunset Watersports were extremely helpful and fun! The crew had winning personalities that made the trip extremely enjoyable and the staff at our boat rental day went out of their way to be helpful during shuttle service and getting us set up with fun GPS coordinates for our pontoon boat rental day. Thank you for the good times!
Absolutely incredible boat rental. The crew were fantastic. Christie and Bridget did a wonderful job at Cow Key Marina. If you want a great boat rental in the Key West area, this is the place to go! We rented a pontoon boat and they directed us to a beautiful sandbar for the best day ever!!
We did a full day rental if the 22 foot center console fishing boat. Service was great before and after rental. I selected the incorrect boat when booking online and called in to change the order. They were very accommodating. Staff was very helpful with pointing out spots to check out and when going over the boat. Built in cooler and swim ladder. Overall a great experience!
Sunset Watersports boat rental crew made it easy to rent. The shop had fishing pole rentals, snorkeling rentals and bait. Helped us download the navionics app on our smartphones and prepared us for what the waterways were like. Great guys!
My wife and I were in Key West to celebrate her birthday. The staff were very helpful. They advised us the 21' center console fishing boat would be a better option due to the weather conditions which was a good choice, as it had been renovated recently and had better equipment. The staff prepared us for our outing, we took their advice and had a great day. We cruised around the entire island. Encountered a group of dolphins who joined us for about 30 minutes, playing in our wake and leaping out of the water. It was fantastic! Went to the sandbar and enjoyed relaxing in the ocean. Big thumbs ups from us!

- Chevron down Can I bring dive tanks?
- Chevron down Am I responsible for gas?
- Chevron down What sandbars should we go to in Key West?
Key West is surrounded by some of the Florida Keys best sandbars. Here are some of our favorites.
Snipes point sandbar boat rentals:.
Located east of the mangrove isles of Mud Keys, its easily one of the favorite local sandbar hangouts. This sandbar gets even more popular on weekends, where you can find tons of locals from the middle to lower Florida Keys. Snipes Point water is crystal clear and shallow.
Jewfish Basin Sandbar Boat Rentals:
Located just 7 miles north of Key West you will find a series of beautiful sandbars tucked away in between the Harbor Keys & Mud Keys. These sandbars are perfect inlets for boat rentals & very close to our marina dock at Cow Key Marina.
Mud Keys Sandbar Boat Rentals:
The only reason this location is number 3 on the list is due to the difficulty navigating. The Mud Keys are a series of mangrove islands and shallow water way passages. This location is much less popular, not because of it’s beauty but due to it’s true seclusion. We highly recommend asking our company for a guide to help navigate these tough passages.
Boca Grande Sandbar Boat Rentals:
Boca Grande is another amazing sandbar located in just off of Key West. Boca Grande is about 15 miles west of Key West and is a 180 acre uninhabited island located in the Mule Keys. This sandbar is great for exploring & socializing among other visitors. This sandbar is outside of the range of our standard boat rental but you can hire a guide with one of our boat rentals to explore this incredible island.
Boca Chica Sandbar Boat Rentals:
The closest and most accessible of Key West’s sandbars is located just off the island of Boca Chica. This sandbar is about a mile from the marina and is frequented by jetski tours, boat rentals and charters alike. This shallow water haven is ideal for your first stop no matter if you are going snorkeling, sandbar hopping or even fishing.

Great Experience
"My husband and I had a great time snorkeling with Captain Hooks! Our crew took the time to explain everything, brought us to a great spot, and we got to see an iconic corral! It was our 1st time snorkeling and it was such a great experience we will definitely do it again!"
Friendly Crew
"Great excursion to two reefs under the directions of Captain Dave. Boat holds about thirty people of teams of about five to six divers or snorkelers with a Diver Master who is very attentive. The boat also has a very outgoing and friendly crew. Experience a four hour tour that passes by too quickly due to the fun. Please don't forget to bring tips for the Diver Masters and the crew."
Great Snorkeling Trip
"Great snorkeling trip and brochure perfect day in Marathon. Captain Mike, David & Kevin did a great job. Recommended for everyone."

Scott was great! Highly recommend! He customized the trip for the things we were interested in. His hospitality was top tier, a great communicator, and Scott is very knowledgeable regarding the ocean and area! If we're back in the area we'll be seeing Scott again! You won't regret choosing Scott and his beautiful boat!

New 21.2 Sportsman Boat perfect size for the Keys
The boat is exactly as listed. Very clean , and new, and comfortable. Thomas’ price is a great value, which we really appreciated. Thomas was also extremely flexible with our late pick up and drop off. He was very accommodating to our changing schedule. The boat was stocked with Floaties, some lifejackets and some snorkel equipment. Our experience was wonderful and we will definitely be using this boat again in the future.
Captain Lew provided us with an unforgettable experience while meeting the needs of every individual, from the first time snorkeler who had trouble putting on her gear, to the old lady who needed extra help on/off the boat, to the Spanish speakers with no English and finally to the sea sick 10 year old. Nothing was too much for Captain Lew! We saw beautiful coral, fauna and fish, lots of fish! The boat was pure luxury with every comfort possible. Perfect for my European visitors and me! Thanks again, Captain!
Braxton was a great captain and took us to 2 different locations for snorkeling. He had ice and water for us as well as he was prepared for unexpected sea sickness that one of us got and provided Dramamine. Great trip from all aspects! We will definitely be back!

Florida Keys Yacht Charter
Often considered America 's Caribbean Islands the Florida Keys yacht charter offers spectacular locations to explore.
You will often read references to a 'jade necklace' or a 'string of pearls' in descriptions of the many (800+) islands that stretch off into the sea. The Keys have become increasingly busy over the last few years with an increase in cruise ship and other tourism. The keys feature plenty of energy ashore, but to get away into the quieter areas a charter yacht is the only way to go.

The first Key to come across on your cruise south will be Key Largo . Over the years Key Largo has become a busy weekender retreat from the mainland. As you sail further down though the Keys you will finally come to the last one, Key West .
The Florida Keys are sheltered by the only living coral reef in the United States. The Keys are well known to yacht charterers for the spectacular scuba diving and snorkelling, kayaking and eco-tours, dolphin watching, island hoping and fishing.
The types of yacht charter available in the Florida Keys are all the main types including motor, sailing, bareboat charter, skippered, crewed yachts, catamaran, power boat, sailboat, luxury yachts and super yacht charter.
The Florida Keys features a year round calendar of special events such as fishing tournaments, international yacht races, motor yacht races, Fantasy Fest, a lighted boat parade and Florida's own 10 day long Mardi Gras. We recommend charter yachts with a draft of under 4 or 5 ft (1.3 - 1.5m), as with a catamaran, so that you can get in to all the best areas within the Florida Keys.
Key West Yacht Charter
Key West has the ideal year round climate for yacht charter. Key West is a very unique town being the southernmost US city where history and tradition meets natural beauty and serenity. This city has real estate titles that date back to the King of Spain! Within walking distance from the historic Seaport District you will find palm-lined streets, tropical gardens, Ernest Hemingway's home, fine shops, art galleries, quaint restaurants and cafes. You can walk in the footsteps of Thomas Edison, Lou Gehrig, Harry Truman, and Tennessee Williams. You will also discover lively bars and pubs along with street musicians, jugglers, mimes and artists.
It is not unusual for charter guests to day sail their charter yachts using Key West as a base. They will sail and explore the keys during the day, utilising the restful anchorages, and then return to the first class marinas at night to experience Key West's nighttime entertainment. Remember to radio ahead to reserve marina space, as Key West is a busy part of the Florida Keys.

Get Away to Key West and Explore the Florida Keys by Sailboat
Did you know there's an international airport perched out in the Gulf of Mexico at Key West? Serviced by all major US airlines and with frequent flights from main airports in the East and South, Key West is so easy to get to. That's where you'll find our boat charter operators, who have a range of sail and motor boats for you to explore this unique corner of the USA.
Along the Florida Keys the holidaymaking options are numerous. Enjoy the aquatic environment with countless opportunities to snorkel, swim, kayak, paddleboard and more, while totally relaxing on board, or ashore on one of the Keys' beautiful beaches. Enjoy an evening meal in one of the upmarket restaurants that dot the Keys, shop and enjoy the nightlife in the major centers of population, and get close to nature at one of several locations designated State Parks.
While pandemic concerns are limiting travel options, consider Key West as your next boat charter vacation destination. Local ordinances reflect the need to keep everyone protected and make this a safe destination. The communities are welcoming and open for business.
Some of the highlights to experience on a Florida Keys Sailing Charter Vacation
Your Florida Keys adventure likely begins and ends at Key West, which is closer to Cuba than Miami yet connected to the US mainland by the 90-mile long Overseas Highway that's an experience in itself. Most sailing charter visitors arrive by air and take the short transfer to one of the charter bases located on the island. Famous for its coral reefs, local architecture, historic sites and nightlife, charming Key West is well worth some time before or after your charter.
Like most charterers however, you will probably be keen to go sailing and start exploring the chain of cays that make up this most southerly part of the Continental USA. Two great things about sailing here are that distances between attractions can be as short as you'd like them to be, and anchorages are plentiful, if shallow in places. A seven-day charter Key West to Key Largo and return is easily achievable.
Travelling out of the Stock island marina, it's less than 30 nautical miles to Baihia Honda Key, a popular stopover. In the vicinity there's a variety of stunning beaches, some say the best in the world. Looe Key has some of the best snorkelling you'll experience on your vacation.
A similar distance to that travelled above will take you from Bahia Honda Key to Long Key, via Marathon, a major sport fishing town of 10,000 people surrounded by the bountiful sea. Stop a while and enjoy a seafood lunch, or you may prefer to do Marathon on the return. At Long Key enjoy the natural surroundings, the greenery and the birdlife.
Perhaps after two days of sailing that have taken you from Key West more than half way to the mainland, you're ready to take it a bit easier. Less than ten nautical miles onward you'll come to Indian Key Historic State Park at Islamorada. Nearby is the San Pedro Underwater Archeological Preserve, another one of the numerous state parks along the Keys. The San Pedro was a Dutch ship sunk during a hurricane in 1733. What remains lies in 18 feet of water 1.25nm south of Indian Key, easily accessible to good swimmers.
From Indian Key, it's a further 20nm sailing distance to Key Largo. Apart from the shops, bars and restaurants, most of the attractions are aquatic-based as they are all along the Keys. A visit to the Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center can be rewarding, a reminder of the fragility of nature in this delicate place.
If you enjoy walking while on vacation, the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail is accessible to many points along your sailing route.

Small Boat Cruising in the Florida Keys
- By Bianca Dumas
- July 12, 2022
We were tied to the fuel dock in Marathon, the midpoint of the Florida Keys, in the early part of 2022, when I realized our mistake.
Other cruisers traveling the Great Loop were on the loop’s southern stretch of the route, while some bluewater cruisers were starting to stage for passage to the Bahamas and beyond. I asked the dockmaster if any slips were available, and learned that it’s perpetually high season in the Keys, including at that moment. Along with cruisers and sailors, fish migrations change throughout the year, calm summer conditions attract divers, and festivals bring in the party crowds.
“We’re always booked out,” he said, shaking his head. Then he paused, perhaps realizing that he’d just sold us a total of 6 gallons of diesel. “Wait, what size is your sailboat?”
We were on Jackalope , a Nor’Sea 27. He shifted into a smile. “Oh yeah, we can probably squeeze you in down there,” he said, pointing to the inner harbor.
We were grateful for the offer, but in the end, we stuck with our plan to anchor out. We had stayed on a dock—at Bahia Honda State Park—only once during our monthlong Keys cruise. While a lot of people on bigger boats doing the loop preferred marinas, anchoring out seemed to fit with our small-boat cruising style. We were basically camping, which required few amenities and created a lot of options. We took bucket baths when we couldn’t go ashore for showers. We cooked from simple ingredients that didn’t have to be refrigerated: lentils, rice and pasta. We paddled our inflatable kayak to shore for an occasional restaurant meal.
We laughed when we were once mistaken for homeless people on a resupply walk, but how could we argue? We don’t have the same look as those who can blow-dry their hair and pull clothes off a hanger.
But our small boat makes for a big adventure. We crossed the Gulf of Mexico from Fort Myers Beach directly to Key West, and because the 90-mile crossing took us three days and two nights, we had the experience of a much bigger, more challenging passage than other boats would. Our sails go up quickly and easily, so we take advantage of every quarter-hour of good wind that we can find.
Moving slow and low, we don’t fear crab pots; they’re easy to see and steer around, even in the dark. And since a keel-hung rudder protects our small propeller, hitting a crab-pot float head-on doesn’t cause trouble. At our top motoring speed of 4 knots, we can see dolphins, turtles and manatees before they dive for cover.
We can’t avoid getting tan because we steer from an open center cockpit. Nor can we avoid getting exercise because we have to paddle ashore rather than motor. ( Jackalope ’s canoe stern means we don’t have a motorized dinghy on davits.)
Like the mythical Western creature that shares its name, Jackalope has a small stature. Just right for us.

- 9 Most Historic Small Towns to Visit in Florida's Emerald Coast
Florida , lovingly called the Sunshine State, has long been a favorite vacation and retirement destination in the United States for its sunny weather, beaches, and popular tourist attractions. However, as fun as tropical resorts and Walt Disney World are, those Florida attractions come with big crowds and busy lines. For a more peaceful and enriching vacation, why not try Florida’s small towns that have kept their heritage and quaint charm?
Here are nine of the most historic small towns in Florida’s Emerald Coast. Not only do they have that quintessential Florida beach vibe and a bevy of museums and historical sites, but they also have that small-town charm that is hard to get from Florida’s big cities. Pack up some sunscreen and sunnies—the historical Emerald Coast is waiting!
Arguably one of the most popular spots on the Emerald Coast, Destin started as a fishing village, which eventually became a vacation favorite due to its emerald-green waters. You can learn more about its past at the Destin History & Fishing Museum, where antique fishing rigs and other nautical artifacts are on display.
Use your new Destin knowledge when you go sailing with the boat tours from Destin Harbor Boardwalk. You can get pontoon boat rentals, dolphin cruises, and even a thrilling parasailing adventure that lets you see Destin from above! Swim from any of the five beachfront parks before rewarding yourself with fresh seafood from Destin’s most-awarded restaurant—Marina Cafe.
St. George Island
This heavenly barrier reef island is not only full of stunning tropical views and uncrowded beach hangouts, but it is also rich in historical beauty. Its lighthouse, the Cape St. George Light, is a treasured spot and has stood on the island for 153 years before it toppled into the sea. A replica now stands in its place using salvaged parts of the original lighthouse, with a museum and a lovely gift shop inside.
After your mini lighthouse tour, explore the tiny island by camping at the white sand beach of St. George Island State Park, lounging at the seafront beach house of Recharge by the Sea, or dining on oysters at Paddy’s Raw Bar.
Apalachicola
Known for its oysters and historic port town history, get your museum fill in Apalachicola via the John Gorrie Museum State Park and the Raney House Museum. The former is a museum highlighting the man who made mechanical refrigeration possible! Dr. John Gorrie wanted a way to cool the sickrooms for his patients, and as they say, the rest is history. Today, you can find exhibits of his ice-making machine at the site. Meanwhile, the Raney House Museum is one of the well-preserved mansions that popped up during the town's booming trade era.
To further acquaint yourself with the best of the best of Apalachicola, travel during the first week of November to join the Florida Seafood Festival. Not only is the event a historic and the oldest festival in Florida, but you will also feast on the freshest oysters and even watch the blue crab race! If you cannot visit then, go to The Station Raw Bar or the 13 Mile Seafood Market anytime to get your oyster fix. For non-oyster souvenirs, The Tin Shed Nautical & Antiques has some interesting trinkets for you.
Valparaiso, or Paradise Valley in Spanish, is a true paradise for Floridian history buffs due to its regional museum and proximity to the Air Force plane collection. Home of the Heritage Museum of Northwest Florida, this tiny museum is jam-packed full of displays and relics that show how its Native American people and colonial settlers lived in the past. You will find a sample homestead, old typewriters and saddles, and an informative session on the panhandle’s bygone days. Cap your history lesson by dining on Valparaiso’s culturally varied culinary scene. The Philippine Market & Cafe, Pho Nguyen Vietnamese Noodle, and Doc's Oyster Bar’s New Orleans-style seafood are just some of the highlights.
Just southwest of downtown Valparaiso is the Air Force Armament Museum, a behemoth of a place for any war history enthusiast. It has amassed more than 29 aircraft on exhibit, with a sizable number of guns, bombs, and missiles in its display arsenal. Get a crash course on World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, as well as see the evolution of the country’s air power!
Fort Walton Beach
Fort Walton Beach is a great mix of being an angler paradise, a beach resort haven, and a hub for history and science museums. Kids and adults alike will enjoy the interactive exhibits of the Emerald Coast Science Center, the ceramic artifacts and native lifestyle demonstrations of the Indian Temple Mound Museum, and the animal encounters of Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park.
Fort Walton Beach is also serious with its fishing culture. Avid and beginner fishers should head over to The Island Pier for its 1,200-foot pier that provides great views while fishing. First-time anglers can rent equipment from them and will not need a Florida fishing license just to try. After a day of learning and fishing, unwind at Marina Bay Resort for waterfront views and a luxurious vacay, or choose Aunt Martha’s for a quaint bed and breakfast stay among 300-year-old oak trees.
Do not let its island clusters and fishing village vibe fool you—Cedar Key had quite an interesting role during the Civil War! Situated in the Gulf of Mexico, this tiny town was tasked with making and shipping salt to soldiers during the war. You can still see remnants of its salt kettles at the Cedar Key Museum State Park. The park also houses Native American relics, wooden pencils back when the town made cedar products, and local seashells from the founder’s personal collection. Hiking and kayaking are allowed on the premises.
Just across Cedar Key’s harbor is the mini isle of Seahorse Key, where its lighthouse was erected in the 1850s. Now considered a historical beacon, the lighthouse’s history is rocky—from being a watchtower that was attacked by the Spanish Naval to becoming a detention center for Native Americans. Need a break from the history lessons? Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge and its animals provide a pleasant respite, while Atsena Otie Key is a popular spot for kayakers and trekkers. While hiking, keep an eye out for its ruins and historic cemetery!
With its railroad history and proximity to the Blackwater River, there is much to explore in the laid-back city of Milton. Start your visit with a tour of the West Florida Railroad Museum, an old 1909 railroad depot that has now been transformed into an exhibit for train cars and railroad memorabilia. There is even a kiddie train ride for the little ones to enjoy!
Other family-friendly spots are the Panhandle Butterfly House & Nature Center and the Splash Pad at Carpenter’s Park. For a scenic jog along the river, head to the Milton Riverwalk, a boardwalk in the historic district of downtown Milton. You can also go tubing or rent a canoe for some watersports in Blackwater River. Milton is also home to the Blackwater Heritage State Trail, an 8.1-mile paved trail that is perfect for jogging, biking, and even skating.
Grayton Beach
Nestled between Destin and Panama City Beach on the Northwest coast of Florida, Grayton Beach is a historic beach village with an award-winning state park, an impressive underwater museum, and a cluster of beach cottages as its shopping area. Continuing its heritage as the go-to vacation retreat in the area, the village is proud of Grayton Beach State Park, which topped Dr. Beach’s 2020 ranking. Aside from swimming in the park, you can camp, bike, hike, surf and lake fishing, and rent kayaks and paddleboards through the nearby Friends of Grayton Paddle Rentals.
Almost a mile from Grayton Beach, dive into the waters to see the underwater sculpture garden of The Underwater Museum of Art. These man-made sculptures have become a living reef and are now part of the beach’s marine life and Grayton Beach culture. For some shopping, meander through the unique shopping district of Grayton Beach, where shops are housed in adorable cottages! Enjoy a Parisian-style café at Black Bear Bread Co., slurp on delectable noodles at Nanbu Noodle House, and take home a few glass mosaics and art trinkets from La Duna Gallery.
Port Saint Joe
Located along the shores of Saint Joseph Bay is the sleepy port town of Port Saint Joe, where its iconic and historic Cape San Blas Lighthouse stands and the cool blue waters of the nearby Saint Joe Beach attract tourists year-round. Although already removed from service, the lighthouse remains standing as a reminder of its long service and history in this Emerald Coast town.
For more history lessons, the Constitution Convention Museum State Park is all about educating visitors on Florida’s first constitution, which was drafted in the long-gone town of St. Joseph. Need to unwind after that heavy history session? Hit the beach with AquaBear Adventures and their family-friendly snorkeling and dolphin cruises, go strolling and picnicking at George Core Park, and munch on yummy Port Saint Joe fare at The White Marlin and Oysterette. For a place to rest after all that learning, splashing, and eating, the Port Inn and Cottages is a great accommodation choice due to its location downtown.
Florida is blessed with amazing sandy beaches, pristine waters, and teeming marine life, so much so that it continues to be America’s favored vacation and retirement state, with millions of visitors dropping by every year. However, the crowds and hectic city life in Florida cities like Orlando , Tampa, and Miami are not for everyone. If you would rather have a chill Florida vacation, look to the Emerald Coast!
This list of historic small towns to visit in Florida’s Emerald Coast proves that you do not have to wade through busy cities to enjoy Florida’s beaches and history. Destin’s emerald waters, Apalachicola’s traditions, and Fort Walton Beach’s museums are just some of the gems you can experience on this side of Florida. Forgo the usual theme parks and get a small-town historical Florida vacation instead!
