Following his death, the owner’s family put Lusine and his second yacht—the 237-foot Espen Øino-designed Albatross —up for sale. Robb Report was aboard Lusine in September during a short cruise from Monaco to St Tropez.
Lusine —meaning moon in Armenian—is defined by its sleek and sporty exterior. Designer Frank Laupman of Omega Architects placed a significant emphasis on spending time outdoors with family. A sun lounge and al-fresco dining area for 10 guests was designed into the aft main deck and shaded by an overhang, while also including a refreshment center and two large televisions. On the forward upper deck is another large social area with sun pads and lounge area for informal dining.
On the sun deck, a touch-and-go helipad is personalized with a crescent moon symbol, which replaces the H found on standard helipads. This detail, specified by the owner, is found on the floors of all the exterior decks.
Minimal furniture makes the sun deck highly flexible, serving as a dance floor, yoga deck or sun lounge to suit a new owner’s needs.
The helm is not necessarily a social spot, but there are lounges where guests can watch the skipper and his team at work at the advanced helm. “ Lusine operates as a completely paperless yacht, meaning all charts and maps are digital,” Captain Varun Raju told Robb Report .
In fact, the only charts found on board are in the wall art in the near full-beam main salon. Made from blue agate and straw marquetry, they depict celestial constellations. It is also here where the boat’s “moon stone” is located—a meteorite inlay in the main salon coffee table, surrounded by palladium leaf. “This is the closest I will get to touching something from space,” mused Varun.
Penned by Sinot Yacht Design, the interior dazzles with more than 180 rare woods, precious fabrics and exquisite materials. Versailles-patterned oak floors, crystal chandeliers by Precision lighting and gold-leaf and white-onyx sideboards bring the bling. Puffer fish and stingray skins line the walls. Clocks of all shapes and sizes are found in every room to symbolize the owner’s mantra that “time is precious.”
“He was a details man who drilled down on every aspect of the design,” says Paul Costerus of Sinot. The owner met with Sinot at least a dozen times, bringing hundreds of samples for every possible material for Lusine , and showing the design team exactly what he wanted—from the heights of the furniture to specific nooks near the bed for storing his reading glasses, to the height and depth of bathroom cabinets to ensure towels with a specific thread-count would fit.
Spaces were large and the volume of materials made everything feel hugely tactile. I wanted to reach out and touch the walls and finishes.
As one would expect, the owner also thought hard about crew service to minimize disruption to guests. On his yacht, guests had pride of place. A central-atrium elevator transports the owners and guests from the lower deck to the sun deck. The elevator is beautiful, but the the multi-deck 3D-leather artwork by British artist Helen Amy Murray surrounding is more impressive. It reflects three dimensions of nature: the lower deck shows underwater marine life, above is illustrated with birds and clouds, and at the top, celestial moon and stars.
On the dedicated owner’s deck is a full-beam suite with king-sized bed, his-and-her bathrooms and a study. At the touch of a button, the master suite windows frost, creating a fully private haven. The owner’s private deck has lounge seats that face the stern, with an on-deck jacuzzi. The area is also set up for intimate private dining.
The VIP suite with private office is located on the same floor, with a marble ensuite and underfloor heating. There are also four lower deck twin cabins.
On the lower deck, a full-beam swim platform with an on-deck shower is where guests access the water. There is also a tender and toy garage with a day-head. An additional forward tender garage holds a jet ski and two tenders, including a 270 Dauntless Boston Whaler. Gull-wing doors mean the tenders can easily be launched from the side.
Lusine ‘s owner wanted the boat to be a social haven, inside and out, that would be used often by family and friends. In the end, he accomplished that mission.

A HUGE seven-cabin superyacht worth £50milllion has sailed up the River Thames.
The magnificent Lusine measures 60metres, weighs 1,060 gross tonnage and has a top speed of 17.5 knots - 0.56 knots above average.
It moored in Tilbury, Essex , this week after a 12-hour trip from the Netherlands.
Lusine is owned by Dubai billionaire Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, 63, who is also CEO of the Emirates Group.
The luxury yacht has eight bedrooms to accommodate up to 16 guests and has quarters for 14 crew members, experts Boat International claim.
It is thought to be within the five per cent globally by overall length, being among 183 motor yachts between 60-70metres.
Designers at Sinot Exclusive Yacht Design created the interior while Heesen developed the naval architecture last year.
Her exterior has been described as "clean and chiselled" and was styled to resemble a bird's wing.

LUSINE – a broker’s view.
Published 26 January 2023
Dubai-based Broker Jonathan Hind walks us through the largest-ever steel-hulled Heesen yacht, the 60.6m LUSINE, and explains what makes her such an outstanding purchase opportunity.
One of the stars of the Monaco Yacht Show 2022 was the newly-delivered 60.6m (198.8ft) Heesen LUSINE, which means ‘moon’ in Armenian. With exteriors by Omega Architects and lunar-inspired interiors by Sinot Exclusive Yacht Design, she is a yacht of pure Northern European pedigree. Jonathan Hind , Broker and Managing Director of our Dubai office, steps on board.
‘She’s an award-winning 1,079GT yacht (she won World Yacht Trophies Best custom yacht of the year in 2022), MCA compliant for commercial operation, she's never been used so the beds and bathrooms are completely untouched and she's available for purchase now. Also this yacht is less than a year old so all her Heesen and MTU engine warranties, which were both extended by the owner, are still valid and fully transferable,’ says Jonathan.
‘That’s a compelling combination of factors for an owner who doesn’t want to wait at least five years for a new custom yacht to be built.
‘We know for certain LUSINE is a yacht of outstanding quality because we project managed the build for five years on the owner’s behalf,’ adds Jonathan. ‘She is based on the shipyard’s 60m Steel platform but she’s a full-custom build with many personalised adaptations, like the private owner’s deck with terrace and jacuzzi, glass elevator serving all decks and a touch-and-go helipad.
‘She was designed for an owner who loved entertaining so there are plenty of social spaces for guests. There’s a huge foredeck lounge that offers privacy when stern-to in port, as well as a lounge, bar and al fresco dining table on the main deck aft. There are TVs everywhere too, the owner loved movies.
‘Broadly the interior design is slick and contemporary. The palette is contrasting earth tones with walnut, mahogany and Macassar veneers lifted by cream furnishings, stainless steel detailing, straw marquetry and light oak parquet flooring in the main saloon. Pops of blue from bespoke artworks inspired by the night sky work really well.
‘The interior design is remarkable, and the piece that caused all the fuss at Monaco was the table with a slice of an actual moon meteorite set into palladium, a rare type of platinum, as its central feature. It is a real ‘stop-and-think’ piece.
‘But for me her best feature is the cream-leather mural that wraps around the stairwell with fish and corals on the lower deck, mountains and trees on the main deck, birds and clouds on the bridge deck and finally the moon and stars on the sun deck. It’s quite an immersive journey, ascending from the seabed to the heavens.
‘The same colour palette carries through to the nine guests suites for 18 guests with reduced detailing to make the spaces more restful, a wonderful place to sleep.
‘As well as the aft facing owner’s suite, there’s a full-beam VIP suite with a private lounge and an adjoining twin cabin for children or staff. There are four more twin cabins on the lower deck, all of which could be changed to convertible or double berths should the new owner require more flexibility. There's a ninth cabin, also a twin but with access to a private terrace, up on the sun deck.
‘She features FDHF (fast displacement hull form) design pioneered by van Oossanen, which reduces drag by up to 20 percent for reduced fuel consumption and improved comfort at sea. She has a lively top speed of 17.5 knots, cruises at 13 knots and a maximum range of 4,200nm means she can cross the Atlantic with no problems.
‘The fact that she has three tenders will also be attractive to many, as they make such a difference when exploring your anchorage or getting ashore. LUSINE is a very special yacht in so many ways, I’m sure she’ll be cruising with a new owner before the summer. If you think that might be you, please get in touch and I'll meet you in Barcelona for an inspection that will impress.'

Heesen delivers 60-metre full-custom MY Lusine
Heesen is delighted to announce the delivery of MY Lusine, YN 19360, previously known as Project Falcon. During intensive tests in the North Sea, she reached the contractual speed of 17,5 knots with acoustic and vibration performance within the required limits. Powered by two MTU 12V 4000 M65L diesel engines and equipped with full tropical air-conditioning, she has a range of 4,200 nautical miles at 13 knots. Her exterior lines designed by Omega Architects, who have introduced an eye-catching ‘bird’s wing’ motif as a visual enhancement to integrate the main deck, bridge and sundeck without interrupting the horizontal sweep of the windows.
Lusine is now on her way to welcome her owners on board. Captain Varun, who is no stranger to the Heesen family, having previously skippered MY Asya, commented: “I am extremely proud to take delivery of my second Heesen yacht. Lusine is sturdy and gives me great confidence. We tested her in sea state 5 with winds up to 30 knots, and she behaved very well. It is a great privilege to be captain of a custom yacht with such a pedigree. I look forward to sailing her on the high seas!”
At 60 metres in length with an enclosed volume of approximately 1,060 GT, this yacht presented several challenges for which Heesen engineers and craftsmen developed smart solutions to accommodate the Owners’ and their team’s requests. To name a few: she is the first in the world to sport the SCR system alongside the V12s MTU engines, the storage of the Boston Whaler tender in the aft garage with the launching ramp.
Peter van der Zanden, general manager of design, development and engineering at the shipyard, said: “Thanks to the knowledge gained during the evolution of our steel fleet over the years, our engineering and naval architecture teams easily hit all the targets. Lusine is one of the most complex steel yachts we have delivered to date, but our experience helped us find ingenious solutions and presented a solid foundation for intelligent innovation.”
Lusine’s layout is tailored around the owners and their family lifestyle. Twelve guests are accommodated in six staterooms, with the owners’ apartment on the bridge deck aft. The touch-and-go helipad for private use, served by an enclosed air-conditioned reception area, guarantees discreet boarding. Top-notch service is at the core of the layout: separate routing throughout the yacht ensures that the crew can perform their duties seamlessly without disturbing the guests’ relaxation.
Sinot Yacht Architecture and Design created a calm and elegant interior decor that exudes sophistication in its intricate design and unique combination of materials. Lusine is one of the most complex interiors ever crafted by the artisans of Heesen Yachts Interiors, who enjoyed the challenge of working with rare woods, precious fabrics and exquisite leathers.
Lusine is the first yacht delivered by Heesen in 2022. She will be followed later in the year by custom and semi-custom yachts tipping the luxury scales at no less than 3,458 Gross Tons.

Luxury yacht LUSINE takes her name from the ancient Armenian for Moon whose influence on the phases of the tides has long been significant to ocean journeymen. This fabulous 60m Heesen super yacht subtly reflects her namesake with touches throughout her décor.
Super yacht Lusine | Meaning Moon in Armenian
But let’s begin our journey through this custom Heesen superyacht by turning the spotlight on her exterior which can be reached at sea by the touch-and-go helipad. On approach her unique ‘bird wing’ shape and uninterrupted dark glass windows immediately stand out. the features have been designed by Omega Architects to dramatically integrate the three decks and elongate her horizontal lines.

On deck the lunar influences start to make an appearance, most noticeably on the intricately crafted details on the sun deck with inlaid wood and lights depicting a crescent moon and stars. The custom-made deck furnishings are perfectly considered offering a choice of lounge and dining areas accented with luxurious accessories.
Unique inlaid woodwork nods to Lusine’s name
Sinot Yacht Architecture and Design are credited with LUSINE’s interior design and have created a sophisticated oasis by blending a unique combination of rare woods, precious fabrics and premium leathers. This is evident none more so than in the exquisite central elevator ready and waiting to escort guests comfortably between floors. The rich textured lining of the main lobby walls surrounding the elevator depict scenes from nature picked out in low relief and the marbled glass flooring appears like the surface of the moon.

Contemporary parquet flooring grounds the selection of sofas and armchairs, richly design coffee tables and huge walnut dining table found in the main salon. The salon subtly explores nautical and celestial themes throughout with rich coral like tabletops and stellar award-winning artworks.

Heesen Yachts ‘Lusine’ Reviewed
- By Phil Draper
- May 19, 2023
The Armenian word lusine translates to “moon” in English. That’s why, aboard the 198-foot Heesen Lusine , lunar and celestial themes are everywhere, from wall features to the teak decking. A crescent moon, for instance, is in the middle of the helipad. Even the font of the yacht’s name runs from thin to thick, reflecting the moon’s four waxing and waning phases.
Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design in the Netherlands created the opulent, almost art deco interior, which Heesen says is by far the most complicated and expensive it has ever produced. Initially, the yacht’s owner was inspired by Heesen’s then-Project Ceres (which launched as Galactica ), but he ended up developing a fully custom vessel. At 1,079 gross tons, and based on a Fast Displacement Hull Form by Dutch naval architecture firm Van Oossanen, Lusine is Heesen’s longest and biggest-volume steel-hull yacht to date. The overall design process was led by Frank Laupman’s team at the Dutch firm Omega Architects.
Lusine’s profile fuses contemporary and modern styling to stunning effect. While the bow is conventionally pointed, the superstructure is more angular and extends a little farther forward than usual. The high foredeck terrace is vast and capable of hosting quite a party. The bridge-deck wing stations are exaggerated to create much wider side decks, and there is a hint of a bird’s wing amidships in the superstructure relief that cleverly integrates all the upper three decks without actually breaking the horizontal sweeps of glass along the main and upper decks.
Not only is the craftsmanship throughout Lusine exceptional, but the level of detailed design goes way beyond the norm as well. For instance, almost every piece of furniture is custom-size, and the breathtaking parquet soles, rich joinery and intricate marquetry are made from rare woods, special stones, and unusual leathers and skins, such as stingrays and puffer fish. One of the biggest design statements is the yacht’s circular staircase and glass elevator connecting all four decks, with a contoured leather mural depicting sea, land, air and then star themes as guests rise from the yacht’s lower deck to the top deck.
Lusine’s main-deck gathering spaces are conventional enough. Entering from the cockpit seating and dining space, the main-deck salon has lounge and dining areas aft, with an amidships galley and pantry to port. A companionway to starboard leads to the formal, double-glass-door entrance and to a side-boarding ladder beyond. The double-pedestal, cornice-topped dining table has radial Macassar veneers inlaid with gold leaf, blue agate and sycamore. The custom chandelier above is from Preciosa.
Accommodations are for 16 guests in eight en suite staterooms: three with double berths on the upper deck and five with twin berths on the lower deck. The lower-deck staterooms can also be used by personal staff.
The 540-square-foot owners’ stateroom is aft on the upper deck, where many other yachts have a sky lounge. Views from here are fabulous, with a 180-degree panorama to the sides and across the upper deck’s aft lounges, dining area and hot tub. The whole space can be secured for owner privacy.
Forward on the main deck is the L-shaped VIP stateroom, conceived for close family. It has an en suite double-berth stateroom and an adjacent en suite twin-berth stateroom. Both open onto a starboard-side private sitting room, which connects to the yacht’s main lobby.
The crew complement is 15. A captain’s cabin is to port abaft the modern, paperless bridge, with the remainder of the crew cabins forward on the lower deck.
Lusine has room for three Boston Whaler tenders: a 270 Vantage, a 210 Dauntless and a 180 Dauntless. The smallest and largest are housed with various toys in a forward garage, which has hinge-up doors to either side of the bow. The 210 is kept in the stern garage with more toys.
For air arrivals, a touch-and-go helipad is on the after end of the top deck. Interestingly, the area around the mast base and at the top of the central staircase is enclosed to create an alternative foyer for guests arriving this way. The space includes a pilot’s cabin.
Propulsion is twin 2,575 hp MTU 12V 4000 M65L diesels, which reportedly deliver a top speed around 18 knots and an ocean-straddling 4,200-nautical-mile range at 13 knots. Twin Naiad fins provide stabilization, and onboard power comes primarily from twin 315 kW Zenoro generators. The yacht’s air conditioning is built to high-tropical specification.
Lusine embodies all the knowledge and experience that Heesen has amassed by delivering more than 80 metal motoryachts with an average length of 155 feet in the past 20 years. The yard consistently delivers around four big yachts annually—not tied to the four phases of the moon but stellar nonetheless.
A coffee table in the main salon contains a small slice of lunar meteorite. A few of these rare rocks have been found on Earth and matched forensically with samples brought back from NASA’s Apollo missions. Scientists believe that the rocks arrived in debris showers following crater-creating events. A meteorite with proven provenance is the closest thing to a moon rock that money can buy; the real ones are owned by U.S. government agencies.
Now for Sale
Sadly, Lusine’s owner died right around the time the yacht was delivered. It’s now listed for sale “as new” with Burgess and is lying in the West Mediterranean. The asking price at press time was $82 million.
Ever Larger
Lusine is Heesen’s largest steel-hull motoryacht to date, but the yard’s largest project so far is the semi-displacement, all-aluminum, 263-foot, 1,700-gross-ton Galactica , which departed the Oss, Netherlands, yard in early 2022. Galactica is also reportedly the world’s largest and fastest motoryacht with a conventional shaft-line propulsion. Heesen says the vessel is capable of 29 knots, with four MTU 20V 4000 series engines.
Busy Builder
Heesen mostly builds semi-custom projects on common platforms. In recent years, most have been fast-displacement or semi-displacement hulls in steel/aluminum or all aluminum, but, occasionally, there’s a full-displacement steel/aluminum or all-aluminum project in the mix. Lusine is a good example of its steel-hull yachts.
