Autopsies reveal the cause of death for two married couples onboard Mike Lynch’s superyacht

Four of the victims of last month’s Bayesian yacht disaster died after oxygen ran out in an air bubble on the sunken vessel, it has been reported.

Autopsies over the past few days on four of those who died have revealed an absence of water in their lungs, suggesting they suffocated as the air became saturated with carbon dioxide, Italian publication La Repubblica said.

The outlet reported post-mortems showed four people died from “atypical drowning”, with “no water in their lungs, trachea and stomach”. There were no signs of external injuries.

The results appear to back up investigators’ opinions that the victims sought out air pockets inside the yacht before they died.

The incident on 19 August, which claimed the lives of seven people including British tech magnate Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, unfolded last month after a violent storm hit the Bayesian off the coast of Sicily .

The yacht sank quickly , trapping the victims below deck as it settled on its right side. Divers who retrieved the victims’ bodies on board found five of them, including Mr Lynch, in one cabin on the left side of the yacht. Hannah Lynch’s body was the last to be found, in a separate cabin.

The body of the yacht’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, was also recovered floating near the wreckage, which lies 50 metres below the surface.

Investigators believe the victims sought out remaining air pockets as the vessel moved sharply to the right while sinking.

However, it is unlikely to have lasted long as it would have been “small and quickly filled with rising levels of toxic carbon dioxide”.

The findings of the autopsies, detailed in La Repubblica on Wednesday, appeared to support this theory.

Among the victims examined so far were Jonathan Bloomer, the international chairman of Morgan Stanley Bank; his wife Judith, a psychotherapist; Christopher Morvillo, a US lawyer; and his wife Neda, a jewellery designer.

Previous reports suggested Mr and Ms Morvillo, whose autopsies were carried out first, both died by drowning .

But post-mortems have found the lungs of the four people were “not fully of water”, which is otherwise known as “dry drowning”.

La Repubblica reported Ms Barcares, who is also the CEO of the company that owns the superyacht, made it to the deck barefoot but only thought about saving her daughter and her husband trapped below.

As the boat reared up, she cut herself on broken glass and was unable to reach the cabins and help Mr Lynch and their daughter Hannah before the electrical blackout on the Bayesian .

For a week after the sinking, she said she could not walk because of the lacerations to her feet.

The remaining autopsies, on Mr Lynch, his daughter and Mr Thomas, are scheduled for Friday, the newspaper added.

Nine crew members and six passengers, including Mr Lynch’s wife, survived by escaping on an inflatable life raft.

Prosecutors have launched an investigation into the yacht’s captain, New Zealander James Cutfield, along with two Britons – engineer Tim Parker Eaton and crew member Matthew Griffiths – over allegations of possible manslaughter and culpable shipwreck.

Mr Parker Eaton denied claims that external doors were left open during the storm, which reportedly allowed water to flood the engine room.

According to Italian news agency Ansa, Mr Griffiths – who was on watch duty at the time – told investigators: “I woke up the captain when the wind was at 20 knots [23mph/37kph]. He gave orders to wake everyone else.

“The ship tilted and we were thrown into the water. Then we managed to get back up and tried to rescue those we could.

“We were walking on the walls [of the boat]. We saved who we could, Cutfield also saved the little girl and her mother.”

The men have been permitted to leave Sicily as investigators work to piece together the crucial events that unfolded in the 16-minute window between the yacht being hit by a suspected “downburst” storm at 3.50am and its rapid sinking at 4.06am, just 400 metres from its anchorage near the Sicilian port of Porticello.

Being investigated does not imply guilt and does not mean formal charges will follow.

Details have emerged of the 22 people who were on board the superyacht that sank off the coast of Sicily.

The British-flagged vessel named Bayesian was carrying 12 passengers and 10 members of crew when it got into difficulty in the early hours of Monday.

Seven bodies have now been recovered. The other 15 people on board were rescued.

British technology tycoon Mike Lynch was among the original six people missing. On Thursday, divers confirmed his body had been recovered.

Raised in Ilford, east London by Irish parents, the 59-year-old made millions with the software company Autonomy he set up in 1996.

He had an estimated net worth of £852m, according to the 2023 Sunday Times Rich List, and is believed to have owned the yacht.

Off the back of Automomy's global success, Mr Lynch was given the roles of science adviser to former prime minister David Cameron and non-executive director of the BBC.

The Cambridge maths and sciences graduate sold the firm for £8.64bn to US giant Hewlett Packard (HP) in 2011.

Dubbed the "British Bill Gates", Mr Lynch has been in the headlines in recent months over a high-profile fraud case related to the sale of Autonomy to HP in 2011.

HP accused him of deliberately overstating the value of the company before it was acquired by the American technology firm. Mr Lynch denied any wrongdoing.

In June, a US jury cleared him of all charges .

Hannah Lynch

Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch was also on board. A body believed to be that of the teenager was recovered on Friday from the yacht wreckage.

She had been on holiday with her parents, having secured a place to study English at the University of Oxford, according to reports.

Her former school, Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith, west London, said they were "incredibly shocked by the news that Hannah and her father are among those missing in this tragic accident" when the yacht first sank.

Angela Bacares

Mr Lynch's wife Angela Bacares was on board the yacht and was rescued.

The 57-year-old said she and Mr Lynch were awoken by the boat "tilting" at 4am - half an hour before it sank.

Jonathan Bloomer

Jonathan Bloomer, the chairman of investment bank Morgan Stanley International, was confirmed dead on Thursday.

According to the Financial Times, Mr Bloomer appeared as a defence witness for Mr Lynch during his US criminal trial and the pair were good friends. He also chaired Autonomy's audit committee.

The 70-year-old was the chief executive of UK-Hong Kong insurer Prudential until he was ousted by the board in 2005.

He was also chairman of the insurance provider Hiscox.

Judy Bloomer

Mr Bloomer's wife Judy was on the yacht trip with her husband. Divers confirmed they found her body on Thursday.

Mrs Bloomer was a former board member at The Eve Appeal charity, which focuses on gynaecological cancers.

The charity described her as a "brilliant champion for women's health and medical research... an incredible supporter, committee member, and trustee of our charity for over 20 years".

Recaldo Thomas

The yacht's on-board chef Recaldo Thomas died in the sinking.

He was Canadian-Antiguan and part of the crew of the Bayesian.

His body was the first to be recovered from the wreckage.

Chris Morvillo

US lawyer Chris Morvillo was among those divers found dead on Thursday.

The father-of-two worked on Mr Lynch's US fraud trial and was a partner of law firm Clifford Chance's US branch.

Mr Morvillo was assistant attorney for the Southern District of New York between 1995 and 2005 and worked on the terrorist investigation into the 9/11 attacks.

In a recent LinkedIn post, he thanked the legal team that helped win Mr Lynch's trial.

Signing off the post, he said: "And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo.

"None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home. And they all lived happily ever after…."

Neda Morvillo

Mr Morvillo's wife Neda died in the disaster alongside her husband.

The 57-year-old had a luxury jewellery brand, which she ran under her maiden name Neda Nassiri.

Ayla Ronald

Ayla Ronald, a senior associate at Clifford Chance, survived the yacht disaster, the law firm confirmed.

The 36-year-old worked alongside Chris Morvillo in helping defend Mike Lynch in court.

Clifford Chance said in a statement: "Our utmost priority is providing support to the family as well as our colleague Ayla Ronald, who together with her partner, thankfully survived the incident."

She is originally from Christchurch, New Zealand, but lives in London, her father told local media there.

He said she was left "very shaken" but "she and her partner are alive".

Charlotte Golunski

Charlotte Golunski was on board the yacht and was rescued along with her one-year-old daughter, Sofia.

She spoke to Italian newspaper La Repubblica, confirming she survived the yacht sinking and told how she kept her daughter alive after she was rescued.

"I held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning," she said.

"It was all dark. In the water I couldn't keep my eyes open. I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others."

The 35-year-old is a partner at one of Mr Lynch's firms - Invoke Capital - and has worked there since 2012, according to her LinkedIn profile.

She also worked at Hewlett Packard, which acquired Autonomy in 2011, for 11 months.

Before that, she studied history at the University of Oxford.

James Emsley

Ms Golunski's partner James Emsley was also rescued from the yacht, according to Sicily's civil protection agency.

The 36-year-old is the father of her one-year-old daughter.

James Cutfield

The 51-year-old captain of the yacht spoke to Italian newspaper La Repubblica after he was rescued.

Mr Cutfield, from New Zealand, was taken for treatment at the Termini Imerese emergency unit, where he told the newspaper: "We didn't see it coming."

Leah Randall

Leah Randall was part of the Bayesian crew and survived the sinking.

She was pictured going ashore in Porticello on Monday morning and is from South Africa.

Her mother Heidi told Sky News said she was "beyond relieved that my daughter's life was spared by the grace of God".

"It doesn't make it any easier living with the heartache of those who have lost their lives [or are] missing. My very deepest condolences to the chef's family as they formed a great friendship," she said.

Katja Chicken

Katja Chicken was another South African member of crew on board the Bayesian and was pictured being brought to safety in Porticello on Monday.

The Italian coastguard confirmed on Tuesday evening that Leo Eppel, a crew member, also survived the yacht sinking.

Joel Villanueva thinks Alice Guo fears boss of raided Porac POGO hub

Senator Joel Villanueva on Friday said he believes that the "big boss" of illegal Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) in the country is Duanren Wu, an alleged former Chinese cop and an incorporator of the Whirlwind Corp., which leased the property in Porac, Pampanga where the Lucky South 99 compound is located.

The senator made the statement a day after an official of the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC) named Huang Zhiyang as the "boss of all bosses" of illegal POGOs.

Huang is one of the co-incorporators of dismissed mayor Alice Guo in Baofu Land Development, which leased the land to the raided POGO firm in Bamban, Tarlac. He is also reported to a Chinese fugitive who was found to have five passports in a raid in Clark Freeport Zone, Pampanga.

"I don't believe na siya (Huang Zhiyang) 'yung big boss na sinasabi ng iba. Kasi para sa akin, itong Duanren Wu na ito, ito talaga yung notorious," Villanueva said in a virtual interview with reporters.

(I don't think Huang Zhiyang is the big boss that others are talking about. In my opinion, it's actually Duanren Wu who's the real notorious one.)

"He's the one running the show in [so] far as 'yung pagiging notorious group na nandito sa Pilipinas. Parang siya 'yung big boss na kinatatakutan. Siya 'yung pinaka-mastermind sa mga violent acts, tortures, kidnappings, etcetera. So, siya 'yung pinaniniwalaan ko. Dahil siya 'yung talagang 'yung background," he added.

(He's the one calling the shots as far as the notorious group here in the Philippines is concerned. He's like the big boss who instills fear. He's the mastermind behind the violent acts, tortures, kidnappings, and so on. So, I believe it's him. Because he's the one who's truly behind the scenes.)

Darren Wu is a former police officer in China, the senator said, adding that he brought some Chinese military officers to the Philippines.

"Kung may kinatakutan si alias Alice, si Guo Hua Ping, mukhang itong si Duanren Wu," he noted.

(It seems that alias Alice, Guo Hua Ping, is afraid of this Duanren Wu.)

Villanueva added that Duanren Wu is the "beneficial owner" of the Porac POGO hub and not Zhang Jie, the supposed former president of Lucky South 99.

"Yung Zhang Jie is tauhan lang ni Duanren Wu yan... Si Zhang Jie siya 'yung nag check-in at nag facilitate ng hotel dun sa Batam, Indonesia. Inamin ni Shiela 'yan at ni alias Alice. Tapos siya din 'yung Zhang Jie, siya din 'yung nakita sa picture na nasa airport na sumundo o naghatid kay alias Alice. But 'yung money trail puro galing du'n sa kumpanya ni Duanren Wu," he said.

(Zhang Jie is just one of the underlings of Duanren Wu. It was Zhang Jie who checked in and facilitated the hotel arrangements in Batam, Indonesia. Shiela and alias Alice have admitted to this. And it was also Zhang Jie who was seen in the picture at the airport, picking up or dropping off alias Alice. However, the money trail all leads back to Duanren Wu's company.)

According to Villanueva, Duanren Wu and Zhang Jie have the same address. The said address is also used for one of their companies and a cafe, which Villanueva said, where the money laundering was done.

"'Yung address ng cafe at isa pang kumpanya... dun nilalabhan eh. 'Yun 'yung laundering activities nangyayari du'n sa dalawang kumpanya na 'yun e," he said.

While he did not confirm nor deny whether Huang Zhiyang was the name which Guo wrote on the paper during last Monday's hearing, Villanueva said it was Huang who helped the former mayor to leave the country from the start.

"Itong si Huang Zhiyang, siya pa rin 'yung lumalabas from the very beginning na tumulong para tumakas itong si alias Alice. In fact, si alias Alice already admitted na idea ni Huang Zhiyang na umalis siya. Siya talaga 'yung unang may idea na nagbigay sa kanya na umalis siya. So talagang klarong-klarong ito 'yung primary major player na tumulong para tumakas sina alias Alice," he said.

(It was Huang Zhiyang who, from the very beginning, has been the one helping alias Alice escape. In fact, alias Alice has already admitted that Huang Zhiyang's idea was for her to leave. He was the first one who gave her the idea to escape. So it's crystal clear that he is the primary major player who helped alias Alice flee.)

On Thursday, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian mentioned Duanren Wu, Zhang Jie, and Huang Zhiyang as the persons who supposedly helped Guo when she was hiding abroad.

During the Senate hearing on Monday, Guo said they left the Philippines via boat transfers, starting with a yacht in Metro Manila .

Guo refused to name the person who supposedly facilitated their escape. Pressed by the senators, she later wrote the name on paper.

Senator Risa Hontiveros said the person named by the former mayor to senators was already mentioned in previous hearings, while Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada dropped hints that the person that Guo has written on the paper is the "boss of all the POGO bosses" and a passport holder of five countries, particularly Kitts and Nevis, China, Cyprus, Dominica and Cambodia. — VDV, GMA Integrated News

Sacked Smiggle boss John Cheston denies misconduct as mystery around his exit deepens

The sacked boss of Premier Investments’ kids stationery juggernaut Smiggle has denied allegations he was embroiled in any workplace misconduct.

The Solomon Lew-led Premier earlier on Monday announced John Cheston had been dumped as chief executive of Smiggle just three months after he was poached by rival billionaire retail magnate Brett Blundy to run global jewellery chain Lovisa.

Just Group — which is part of Premier and owns the Smiggle, Peter Alexander, Portmans and Jay Jays brands — said Mr Cheston was allegedly found to have engaged in serious misconduct, leading to the immediate end of his employment. Details of the alleged misconduct were not revealed.

“The Just Group board considers that Mr John Cheston has engaged in serious misconduct and a serious breach of his employment terms and on that basis his employment has been terminated today,” the statement read.

Hours later, Mr Cheston issued a statement via a spokeswoman denying any misconduct.

“John Cheston resigned from his employment with the Just Group on 3 June providing 12 months’ notice before he would commence his employment as the chief executive officer of Lovisa Holdings,” it said.

“The allegations of misconduct are categorically denied by Mr Cheston.”

Mr Cheston has been in the top job at Smiggle for more than a decade and earlier this year was lured by Lovisa to replace outgoing chief executive Victor Herrero in June 2025.

Premier the same day was also forced to issue a trading update after leaked financial documents revealed all of Premier’s apparel brands — which also includes Just Jeans, Dotti and Jacqui E — have suffered negative sales growth.

It comes as Premier explores a tie-up with Myer, which could see the apparel brands sold to the department store.

The leaked documents to The Australian revealed Portmans recorded the biggest slump in sales between January and July, down 10 per cent to $68 million. This was followed by Jacqui E, which posted an 8.3 per cent slide to $33.3m over the period.

It also revealed Portmans at one point in the second half was as much as $5.7m behind budget, or nearly 15 per cent.

Premier’s trading update on Monday said it expects total global sales for its retail division to hit $1.6 billion for the 2024 financial year, down from 2023’s $1.64b. Estimated operating earnings is expected to hit a total of $341m, but Premier did not reveal the earnings split between the brands.

Mr Cheston’s sacking has further complicated Mr Lew and the board’s potential plan to demerge Smiggle to become an independently listed ASX company by the start of next year.

It’s not the first time Mr Cheston has had a bitter departure as CEO of a major retailer, having led men’s and women’s clothing brand Country Road for less than three months before leaving in 2010.

After the termination of his employment, Mr Cheston sued the company in Federal Court, with Country Road eventually agreeing to pay him $1.1m in a settlement.

Premier shares were down nearly 5 per cent to $33.545 just before 11am on Monday.
