Valley Mall Captain Sailing Hat

Last but not least, we have the Valley Mall Captain Sailing. This one isn’t supposed to be a legit captain’s hat for your boat but rather a decorative piece that’s worn as a costume or cosplay accessory. It’s unisex and features sufficient adjustability to fit adults and children well.

While it’s ideal for raves and themed parties, you can always bring it along on your boat to add a fun twist to your outfit. But, everything about the build quality tells you that it’s supposed to be a low-cost costume item rather than a practical hat for real-world sailing use.

  • Can easily fit adults and children
  • Great for themed parties and navy costumes
  • Not meant for real-world sailing use

Buying Guide: Captain Sailing Hat

So, with some of the internet’s finest captain sailing hats out of the way, let’s have a brief look at the key factors that should determine whether or not you buy a certain hat or pass on it.

First and foremost, you’ve got to make sure that your hat fits you well. Whether you’re buying it for boating or just for a fun frat party costume, you can’t make compromises if the fit is too loose or too tight. It should neither fall off your head nor pinch on your ears, especially if you plan on wearing it for long hours at sea. So, the right size is the most important thing to look for before you examine a hat any further.

Next comes comfort — and it’s especially important if you’re buying it as a legit sailing hat for your yacht or boat. That’s because in that case, you’d be wearing it for hours, and that too in the sun. So, the hat should be breathable, lightweight, and well-fitted to feel as comfortable as possible on your head.

Sun Protection

Here’s another key consideration to keep in mind if you plan on using it as a proper sailor’s hat. Sun exposure is a real issue that boaters and yachters have to deal with, and if that’s your primary reason for buying a sailing hat, look for a long and dark visor. It should be large enough to at least keep your eyes in the shade at all times since you don’t want a sun glare blocking your line of sight as you navigate through the dangerous ocean waters.

The material of your captain’s sailing hat is another essential factor to look for. Ideally, it should be strong, light, and moisture-wicking to make sure you stay dry throughout the day.

As some parting words from this buyer’s guide, keep in mind that while fashion and looks are important, they’re never as meaningful as your overall user experience. So, never go for a flashier-looking captain sailing hat in place of one that’s more practical to use and offers better sun protection, breathability, and moisture-wicking capabilities.

People Also Asked

For over a century, the navy has maintained the same dixie cup shape on their hats, giving them a decent level of individuality in personal style. Uniform regulations forbid stylistic improvements on such accessories as reshaping or updating, but some sailors still try new things out.

Captain sailing hats aren’t the only types you can wear for sailing. In fact, they’re some of the least practical ones out there — but still, they look the best as they instantly make you feel like the captain of your own ship. But, they can blow off pretty easily, so you can wear baseball caps with retaining clips for a secure fit.

Hat pins have been used for the longest time for holding your hat to your hat, usually by pinning it with your own hair. Today, these pins are mostly used by women yet offer the same amount of utility to men to keep their hats from falling off. After all, it’s a pretty significant investment, and you have to protect it somehow.

How did the superyacht Bayesian sink? Experts say weather was just one factor

Divers searching for 6 missing people locate 5 bodies inside wrecked yacht's hull.

A complicated search effort is underway deep beneath the surface of the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Italy, where a superyacht sank early Monday during a fierce storm.

Dive crews are attempting to enter the wreck of the Bayesian, a 56-metre long British-flagged luxury vessel, which is sitting in some 50 metres of water near the Sicilian fishing village of Porticello.

Fifteen of the 22 passengers and crew members on board were rescued. Divers searching for six people considered missing, including British businessman Mike Lynch, located five bodies inside the yacht's hull on Wednesday, and retrieved four of them from the water.

Searchers previously recovered the body of Recaldo Thomas, the ship's Canadian-Antiguan cook, in the water not far from where the Bayesian sank.

Questions have emerged about why a boat designed to handle severe weather sank so rapidly and whether or not some of its features could've been a factor in its demise. Maritime experts say investigations may, in time, reveal what led to the disaster.

"There needs to be an investigation as to why this happened, what went wrong and, you know, how to prevent it in the future cases," said Simon Boxall, an oceanographer and senior lecturer at the University of Southampton in England.

How did the bayesian sink so quickly.

Grainy footage from closed-circuit cameras on the shore broadcast on the website of the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper showed the Bayesian's majestic mast just before it disappeared.

Karsten Borner, captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, which rescued the survivors who managed to get into a lifeboat, told The Associated Press he was close enough to be able to see the Bayesian as the storm came in.

"A moment later, she was gone," he said.

The survivors told the rescuers they went flat on the water "and were sunk in two minutes."

Boxall said vessels rely on being able to steer and navigate stormy seas, but the Bayesian was anchored and stationary, which likely made it more vulnerable to the storm and, potentially, a waterspout , or mini tornado that creates a whirlwind over the surface of the sea.

He said it was also dark, meaning "you wouldn't see this sort of very unique event coming towards you."

"It's a freak of nature," Boxall said. "I think the fact that so many have survived, so far, is probably a miracle."

Tom Sharpe, a retired Royal Navy commander and defence commentator, told CBC News the weather was likely not the only issue.

He says it's rare that a weather event like this takes down a boat.

"There's nearly always a sequence [of events]," he said in an interview from Guildford, England, explaining that everything from safety protocols to the culture on board the vessel needs to be taken into account.

Two men sit on the left side of a table, opposite from three other men, looking at a illustrations of a the interior of a sunken superyacht.

Was the boat's design part of the problem?

The Bayesian was built in 2008 by Italian luxury yacht maker Perini Navi.

Andrea Ratti, a nautical design professor at Milan Polytechnic, told Reuters that a boat the size of the Bayesian could only sink so rapidly by taking on a huge amount of water.

He suggested that one or more portholes, windows or other openings may have been broken or smashed open by the waterspout, letting in water. There has also been media speculation that a major hatch might have been inadvertently left open.

Reports have also highlighted that the Bayesian featured a 72-metre mast — one of the tallest in the world.

A nighttime view of a yacht with a tall mast, with lights on it, moored on the water with the lights of a city in the background.

Ratti said an unusually tall mast is not by itself an element of vulnerability in a storm.

A second expert, structural engineer Filippo Mattioni, was also skeptical about the suggestion the boat may have sunk due to a broken mast, which likely would have caused major damage smashing against the hull.

Fire department diver Marco Tilotta told the newspaper Il Messaggero that the wreck was "apparently intact," with "no gashes, no signs of impact." However, only half of the hull is visible to divers.

The Bayesian also had a retractable keel — the fin-like structure under the hull that helps stabilize boats and acts as a counterweight to the mast.

Both Ratti and Mattioni wondered if the yacht had been anchored with the keel up, reducing the vessel's depth under water and making it less stable. Ratti said strong winds might have caused the boat to start oscillating wildly, "like a pendulum," putting exceptional strain on the mast.

Sharpe pointed out that a mast the size of the Bayesian's is designed for a massive sail, and without that sail raised and catching the wind, the gusts likely would've had a negligible impact on the aluminum pole.

  • What we know about the capsized superyacht off the Sicilian coast

He instead suggested the anchor may have played a pivotal role.

"My kind of working assumption is that she was probably a bit further in at anchor, and it's very likely, in these sort of conditions, that her anchor dragged," he said.

In such a situation, he said, a crew is better off steering toward the anchor to stabilize the vessel or raising the anchor and heading out to sea to ride out the storm.

"They might have got caught in that middle ground where they're not on a particularly good anchorage, but the anchor is now controlling the bow of the ship."

What caused the extreme weather.

Although Sharpe says the weather is unlikely the sole cause of the sinking, he notes the Mediterranean isn't the calm sea often pictured in travel brochures.

"It can get pretty nasty," he said.

The type of storm that struck Monday is fuelled by warm water and the Mediterranean is warmer than ever, said Boxall, noting there's been about a three and a half degree increase in the 20-year average temperature.

Climatologists say global warming is making such violent and unexpected tempests more frequent.

Luca Mercalli, president of Italy's meteorological society, said the sea surface temperature around Sicily in the days leading up to the shipwreck was about 30 C.

"This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms," he told Reuters.

Thanks, don’t usually look at the Torygraph, and its paywalled. But as I said (and being familiar with Perinis) that would be my expectation

It looks like you are probably correct. A 20+ story mast might not have been the best idea? But the Torygraph isn’t charging me, probably because of my location & ip address. Here’s the image.

The ‘Baynesian’ anchored off Porticello at around 20::00 UTC the evening before the disaster. Another sail yacht, ‘Sir Robert Baden Powell‘, an old classic one (1958, two masts, about 40 meters) was at anchor nearby to NW. Two men from this yacht came over in a small craft, when the ‘Baynesian’ disappeared, to save the swimming people.

The wind, after midnight until the disaster, was WNW 10/15 knots at large, at the protected anchorage 2/3 knots. However, there was this singular villain waterspout inside, probably invisible during the night. The water temperature was about 30°C, the air temp at about 26°C (maybe this influences the strength of the waterspout).

I have seen many waterspouts, but never what they could do on boats or ships.

Climate change contributed to the weather that caused Bayesian to sink, claims expert

Prof Mercalli, one of Italy’s leading climate experts, said climate change had contributed to the weather phenomenon that caused the boat to sink.

He said: “The sea surface temperature around Sicily was about 30 degrees, which is almost three degrees higher than normal. That creates a huge source of energy that contributes to these storms.

“We can’t say this is all due to climate change, but we can say it has an amplifying effect.”

Prof Mercalli said the sinking of Mike Lynch’s luxury yacht was similar to the boating tragedy in which four people were killed on Lake Maggiore in northern Italy in May 2023.

Leading climate expert says crew should have paid more attention to weather warnings

Luca Mercalli, one of Italy’s leading climate experts and president of the Italian Meteorological Society, said the crew of the Bayesian should have paid more attention to the weather warnings issued by Italian authorities before the tragedy occurred.

While noting the tornado that occurred off Sicily’s coast was not predictable, Professor Mercalli told The Telegraph the authorities had issued a “yellow” then a moderate weather alert and the crew should have been more vigilant of the changing weather conditions despite the darkness.

Prof Mercalli said: “I don’t know if there was anyone on board consulting the radar.

“Let’s say that if I had been on board, at the first sign of a thunderstorm I would have woken up all the occupants and been ready and alert with life jackets on until the storm was over.”

He said weather radar made it possible to estimate within 15 to 30 minutes the arrival of an intense thunderstorm, even though it is impossible to know if the wind intensity will reach dangerous levels.

Note: Please advise in replies the number of times you have mustered the entire crew and passengers with lifejackets on at the first sign of a thunderstorm. Surely everybody just does that as standard procedure?

[Comment may not make complete sense to non-SUNY Maritime types] I have always thought “mugs” should be made to memorize that quote (from an alumni and superintendent of the school ) and not the so-called “sallyport saying.” (I don’t recall the quote exactly, it’s from Stonewall Jackson and the gist is that junior officers must blindly obey superiors without question).

We did…at least 20 years ago. I don’t know what they learn now, but I agree with you.

I heard they tried doing away with that, as it’s a quote from a Confederate General. This was back during the hectic Summer of ‘20 when they also said the Fort was racist because of its namesake being a slaveowner.

Fort Schuyler is still Fort Schuyler, so I’d have to imagine the MUGS still learn/memorize the Sallyport Saying, among others.

I’d do away with it only because it’s not appropriate. I doubt it’s being used in any BRM courses…

Family boat and the sleeping owner is your boss…tough decision Pretty sure the radar would be left on and maybe on the captains tv in his cabin? Couldnt know about the wind till it hit you especially if there was no rain in the wind blast so no movement on the radar to see

Statements made by experts should be evaluated depending upon whether they are speaking within or outside of their area of expertise

With regards to vessel operations the professor was outside his area of expertise.

How sinking of luxury yacht off Sicily unfolded

yacht captain cap

One man has died and six people are missing after a luxury yacht sank in freak weather conditions off the coast of Sicily.

The 56m British-flagged Bayesian was carrying 22 people - 12 passengers and 10 crew - when a heavy storm that created waterspouts struck early on Monday.

Fifteen people were rescued and a search operation for those unaccounted for - who include the British tech tycoon Mike Lynch - is continuing.

Here is what we know about the tragedy so far and how it unfolded.

What happened to the yacht?

Map of Porticello and Palermo in Sicily

The Bayesian was struck by a sudden and powerful storm in the early hours of Monday morning, witnesses say.

It was reportedly anchored to the sea bed outside the harbour at Porticello, a small fishing village to the east of Palermo, when what the Italian coastguard described as a "violent storm" hit.

The storm was so fierce that it caused waterspouts, or rotating columns of air and mist, to appear over the sea.

The vessel disappeared beneath the water at about 05:00 local time (04:00 BST).

A doctor treating survivors said the ship "capsized within a few minutes".

Witnesses told Italian news agency Ansa that the Bayesian’s anchor was down when the storm struck, causing the 72m (236ft) aluminium mast to break in half and the ship to lose its balance and sink.

However, divers on the search and rescue team have said the ship was "practically intact" on the seabed, raising questions as to whether the mast was broken.

The ship's unusually tall mast may have contributed to its sinking, according to Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council.

He told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that the mast acted almost like a sail in the strong wind "especially with it being so high".

The extreme winds could have caught the mast and pushed the yacht over, he said.

Karsten Borner, captain of a nearby boat, said after the storm had passed, the crew noticed the yacht that had been behind them had disappeared.

"We saw a red flare, so my first mate and I went to the position, and we found this life raft drifting," he told Reuters.

His crew took on board some survivors, including three who were seriously injured.

Another witness, Fabio Cefalù, captain of a trawler, said he was about to go out on a fishing trip when he saw flashes of lightning so he stayed in the harbour.

"At about 04:15 we saw a flare in the sea," he said, according to the EVN news agency reports.

"We waited for this waterspout to pass. After 10 minutes we went out to the sea and we saw cushions and all the rest of the boat [that had sunk], and everything which was on the deck, at sea. However, we did not see any people in the sea.”

Another fisherman described seeing the yacht sinking "with my own eyes".

Speaking to the newspaper Giornale di Sicilia, the witness said he was at home when the tornado hit.

"Then I saw the boat, it had only one mast, it was very big," he said.

Shortly afterwards he went down to the Santa Nicolicchia bay in Porticello to get a better look at what was happening.

He added: "The boat was still floating, then all of a sudden it disappeared. I saw it sinking with my own eyes."

One of the survivors, British tourist Charlotte Golunski, told Italian newspaper La Repubblica how she held up her one-year-old daughter Sofia to stop her from drowning.

She said the two of them and her partner James survived only because they were up on deck when the yacht sank.

They were woken by “thunder, lightning and waves that made our boat dance”, and it felt like "the end of the world" before they were thrown into the water.

Charlotte said: "For two seconds I lost my daughter in the sea, then quickly hugged her amid the fury of the waves."

She added: "I held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning.

"It was all dark. In the water I couldn't keep my eyes open. I screamed for help, but all I could hear around me was the screams of others."

What is the latest with the search?

Six passengers remain missing and the Palermo coastguard says the search and rescue operation is continuing "incessantly".

The search began on Monday and specialist divers have been working at the site since early on Tuesday morning.

One diver told Italian media the yacht was "practically intact" on its side at the ocean's basin, about 50m below the surface.

The ship's hull is obstructed with furniture and various objects, the Italian fire and rescue service has said.

Divers are looking for ways to access the yacht's cabins, but they have just 10 minutes to search on each dive before they need to return to the surface, the Italian news agency Ansa has reported.

A 1cm thick glass window is also being considered as an entry point.

Francesco Venuto, a spokesperson for Sicily's civil protection agency, told the BBC on Monday rescue teams fear the bodies of those missing "must be" in the boat.

"We've been searching all day with helicopters and boats, we've found nothing. That wouldn't make sense. In these conditions, we should have found something by now," he added.

A specialist caving search and rescue diving team arrived from Rome on Monday, hoping to "achieve results" either during the night or by Tuesday morning at the latest, the director general of Sicily's civil protection agency, Salvatore Cocina, said.

On Monday, the UK's Marine Accident Investigation Branch sent a team of four investigators to carry out a preliminary assessment of the Bayesian's sinking, the BBC understands.

Who was on board?

PA Mike Lynch

There were 22 people on board when the storm hit, including 12 passengers and 10 crew.

The body of one man has been recovered. He has not been formally identified, but the Palermo coastguard said he was the ship's cook. His nationality has not been confirmed.

Among the six people still missing is 59-year-old tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, known by some as the "British Bill Gates".

Mr Lynch founded software giant Autonomy in 1996 and was awarded an OBE for services to enterprise in 2006.

In June, he was cleared of conducting a massive fraud relating to an $11bn (£8.64bn) sale to US company Hewlett Packard.

Afterwards, he told the BBC in an interview he had been able to prove his innocence only because he had the wealth to pay the enormous legal fees required.

The other missing people include Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah, Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo.

Mr Lynch's wife Angela Bacares is among the 15 people to have been rescued, with eight of those receiving treatment in hospital, the Italian coastguard said.

Charlotte Golunski, her husband and daughter Sofia were also rescued and were unharmed, but taken to hospital for check-ups.

She said they had been on the yacht with a group of colleagues.

The daily Il Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported the vessel had mostly British passengers on board, but also people from New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Ireland and British-French citizens.

A doctor based in Palermo said the "very tired" survivors were "constantly asking about the missing people".

Dr Domenico Cipolla told Reuters that one woman he treated described the trip as a "corporate holiday", with some of those on board "very young".

"There were a lot of work colleagues, friends, a few husbands, wives, or a couple of friends who had joined in," he adds.

What is a waterspout and why do they form?

A waterspout is similar to a tornado and can form over oceans, seas or large lakes.

The western half of the Mediterranean has experienced severe storms since the middle of last week.

Through Sunday night and into Monday morning, a zone of bad weather passed by the north coast of Sicily.

BBC Weather forecaster Matt Taylor said: "A waterspout is a tornado that has occurred over water rather than land.

"They can form during intense storms, on the base of cumulonimbus/thunder clouds.

"Turbulence, and the wind blowing in slightly different directions around the cloud, can cause rotation under the base of the cloud and the spout to form.

"Like tornadoes, they bring powerful winds, but instead of picking up dust and debris they cause a water mist around the column of rotating air."

What is the Bayesian, and who owns it?

EPA-EFE/REX/Shutterstock The Bayesian yacht

The superyacht can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites, and is listed for rent for up to €195,000 (£166,000) a week.

It was built in 2008 by Italian company Perini Navi.

The Bayesian's registered owner is listed as Revtom Ltd, which is based on the Isle of Man.

The yacht's name is understood to derive from the Bayesian theory, which Mr Lynch's PhD thesis and the software that made his fortune was based on.

Mr Lynch's wife Ms Bacares is named as the sole legal owner of Revtom, which is registered in the Isle of Man.

The Bayesian completed a number of sailings in recent days, calling at various ports in Sicily, according to ship-tracking website VesselFinder.

A spokesperson for Camper and Nicholsons International, the firm that manages the 2008-built boat, told BBC Verify: "Our priority is assisting with the ongoing search and providing all necessary support to the rescued passengers and crew."

Around the World in Analogue: Life in the Green City, Zelenograd

Back in 1958, Zelenograd was a new town formed and planned by the Soviet Union, specialized to become the central hub of electronics, microelectronics and the computer industry, and it has become as such to this very day for Russia. Dubbed as the "Green City" in reference to the city's color and the symbolic animal, the squirrel, Zelenograd offers much more as it provides wide, open spaces where modernity and nature meet. Through the photographs of Lomographer Igor Silaev a.k.a. mahoney66 , we see a gorgeous glimpse of his life in the okrug in harmonious colors.

I think 2020 was very hard for everyone. There are various restrictions in the country. Due to some restrictions, I even had to change jobs. But it was only good because I had more free time. Thanks to this, I returned to photography!

I live in Zelenograd (Autonomous district of Moscow). Unlike the center of Moscow, it is more calm and measured, and there are a lot of trees in our city (Zelenograd literally translates as green city ). Thanks to this, you can feel a certain connection with nature here, as if you are in the village. But at the same time, some areas look like a metropolis. There is also a very unusual architecture in the style of post-Soviet modernism, it is very inspiring. That's probably why I love this city.

First of all, I love my view from the window, because there are unreal sunsets. There are also many parks and alleys in the city, and in my opinion, they are much more picturesque than parks in the center of Moscow and not so mainstream. I would recommend Victory Park (not to be confused with the Park of the same name in Moscow) and the arboretum. From the Central parks, I would recommend VDNH, there is something to see and shoot.

Next to my house there is a Tanuki restaurant, where they prepare delicious Asian food. And from the bars I would recommend Hops & Coffee, it is located next to the train station. There are many varieties of author's beer and damn fine coffee!... and hot! If we talk about the center, then be sure to visit the cafe PEOPLE as PEOPLE -- this is a pleasant place where you can eat delicious and inexpensive food.

yacht captain cap

I Advise you to come to Moscow in the middle of summer, at this time there are the most comfortable weather conditions and you can walk all day long. Visit as many attractions and parks as possible, take a ride in the Moscow metro and take as much film with you as possible because here it is much more expensive! If you still need a film, then I recommend Perspektivalab . They have a good selection of films and the price is reasonable.

I like to think about the first time I went to Sokolniki Park with my girlfriend. That day, I was terribly stung by my new sneakers, but even that didn't spoil this beautiful day. We walked all day and took a lot of pictures. If you are in Moscow, be sure to go to Sokolniki Park!

Soft rock, hard partying: The six greatest Yacht Rock songs of all time in Asbury Park

Portrait of Chris Jordan

Yacht Rock has made a big splash in the music world.

Here in Asbury Park, fans set sail quite a few years ago for Yacht Rock. Five years ago, to be exact, when DJ Atom Worth started hosting his multimedia Yacht Rock Night at the then-named Asbury Park Yacht Club.

It's now called Low Dive and DJ Atom Worth and Yacht Rock return Friday, Aug. 25.

Yacht Rock is the term, first used in a 2005 online music parody, for the Southern California soft rock of the late ‘70 and early ‘80s. Call it a grand repackaging with polyester shirts and bell bottom jeans. Dance, hang or watch the Yacht Rock videos at Low Dive on Friday.

It's a night of soft rock and hard partying.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

“Seventies sleaziness (in dress) is encouraged,” said Worth previously to the USA Today Network NJ. “We usually get a few people who show up in captain’s hats.”

In honor of the event, we present the Top 6 Yacht Rock songs, as enjoyed by Asbury Park fans, with the help of Low Dive entertainment director Peter Mantas.

More: Nils Lofgren's connection to Asbury Park landmark featured on new album, 'Mountains'

More: Lauryn Hill 'Miseducation' anniversary tour to include Fugees reunion: Here's ticket info

“Sailing” Christopher Cross (1980)

The chimes, background synths and arpeggio guitar chords on “Sailing” does indeed make one feel that one is sailing. Or, perhaps, the feeling is more like floating. Cross was floating on air after the year's Grammy awards. The song won Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Arrangement of the Year, while Cross picked up the Best New Artist award.

“I'm Alright” Kenny Loggins (1980)

Loggin's gamboling free-spirit anthem has plenty of hooks, nooks and production tricks that will make you smile on the first listen or two. After that, frankly, it becomes annoying. The track is from the hit movie comedy “Caddyshack,” and it predates an even bigger movie-related '80s smash for Loggins, the similarly cloying “Footloose.”

“I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)” Hall and Oates (1981)

One can argue that after a promising blue-eyed soul start (“Sara Smile”) in the '70s, Philly's Hall and Oates lost their artistic way in the '80s. Yet, they did find their way to the bank for plenty of withdrawals in the decade, thanks to pop-lite hits like “I Can't Go For That (No Can Do).” To be fair, it's not a terrible song, but the tempo needed to be slowed and the production needed to be reined in to make it a high-quality work.

“Baby Come Back” Player (1977)

The irony of “Baby Come Back” is that it sounds eerily like Hall and Oates' 1973 smash “She's Gone,” which is a great song. Yet, the Yacht Rock crew seems partial the sub-standard '80s Hall and Oates material, rather than their superior '70s sounds. Still, “Baby Come Back,” by the British and American group Player, was a No. 1 hit in 1977 and it’s a great song.

“Rio” Duran Duran (1982)

“Rio,” the 1982 MTV hit by Duran Duran, is not quite Yacht Rock, but the video was filmed on a boat in a tropical setting so it makes the list.

“Escape (The Pina Colada Song)” Rupert Holmes (1980)

The classic story song tells of a couple who “had fallen into the same old dull routine” and both place personal ads in the newspaper — this was way before Tinder, folks. Imagine the surprise when they both show up at O'Malley's to find each other — again. Pina Colada on the house!
