Barograph app keeps track

' src=

One traditional local weather tool is the recording barometer: a barometer linked to an ink stylus that marks on a slowly turning drum of paper. The Starpath app is a digital version of the recording barograph.

This latest app is based on an earlier, free Starpath app called Marine Barometer, which provides pressure data but without the graphic capabilities.

According to Starpath’s David Burch, both Starpath apps are different from many of the barometer apps available because the Starpath apps make use of the iPhone’s own pressure-sensing hardware. Other apps will use barometric pressure from the nearest airport or pressure as reported by the National Weather Service. “This approach is terribly inaccurate for marine work,” said Burch. “Our app is a dependable tool for mariners.”

In addition to graphing atmospheric pressure over time, the app also uses GPS data to calculate course over the ground (COG) and speed over the ground (SOG). The result is that the app acts as a nav data logger. Users can then export that COG/SOG data to OpenCPN or a similar nav program. The free Marine Barometer app is available at the Apple App Store and via Google Play. The new Marine Barograph app is $14.99 at the Apple App Store. n

Just bought another boat in Holland. She is equipped with a small digital barograph showing little bar charts for now, - 1hour, -2 hours -6 hours -12 hours -24 hours, (Prosser I think). So the trend is instantly obvious. On the passage home this little beauty in conjunction with local observation persistently outperformed all the technology of Dutch, Belgian, French and British weather forecasts put together. Quite simply the best piece of kit I have seen for years. <hr width=100% size=1>

Re: I agree The way forecasts have been lately having access to reliable data yourself has never been more important. <hr width=100% size=1>

De-Skilling Yet another example of de-skilling. We have a laptop which shows us where we are, a radar which shows us where they are and a radio that lets everyone know if we have a snag. I only have the authoritative double tap of the barometer left - would you really take away the last vestige of my ability and skill? <hr width=100% size=1>regards Claymore /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Re: De-Skilling Not really deskilling, it's just like having a clockwaoirk barograph (or an hourly number in the log). The skill is in relating it to Mk 1 eyeball and knowledge of weather patterns to produce a local forecast. Isn't it? Phil <hr width=100% size=1>Rgds Phil

Re: Double tap Try the Casio Seapathfinder SPF 40: http://www.sailgb.com/sshop/prod_info.asp?Product=Casio-SPF40-Sea-Pathfinder&PID=8 or (very substantially cheaper in the US) at: <A target="_blank" HREF=http://shop.store.yahoo.com/jomashop/casio-watches.html>http://shop.store.yahoo.com/jomashop/casio-watches.html</A> Cost v. little (if you buy in the US!) and has barometer w/ 24 hr graph of pressure, digital compass, tide table and moon phase indicator. The tide table is only approximate (4 divisions between hw and lw, based on diurnal tides), but the barometer and compass are accurate. Had one for a couple of months now & delighted with it. UK prices seem excessive though, especially when converted into euro. I had one bought via the US link as a present, but there were some complaints about the customer service of that Jomashop site. <hr width=100% size=1>

Casio do a watch called the Pro-Trek for around £100 in the UK which gives 25 hour trend in 2 hourly plots - very good. Have had one for a couple of years and its invaluable - and water resistant.. Also has alarm, stopwatch, temp and backlight for night use. Much more convenient when entering the log and shows trends at a glance. <hr width=100% size=1>

One came with the instruments package on our new boat (in 2001) and because of the plasicy case and fold out base I thought that I had been taken for a ride. However, after our maiden voyage down the length of the Adriatic in April it never failed to forecast what was going to happen - and that was just about everything! - so I became a convert. We now have one at home too and as I type this it has registerd the anti-cyclone we have just had descend upon us over the last few hours and is in agreement with the BBC that we will have sun tomorrow. Great little gadget that works. Ours are made by "Oregon Scientific". <hr width=100% size=1>The above is, like any other post here, only a personal opinion

I wonder if your little barograph "outpereformed" by reading a hgigher pressure than theirs... john <hr width=100% size=1>

Re: Clearly we need the baro on the bulkhead to maintain our authority. One of these electric gadgets works well in a locker. So one for symbolism and one for trends. For real salty cred. you need a trailing log. Being able to effortlessly deal with all that string is the mark of a proper salty seadog. Shows other boats your a deep sea sailorman too. <hr width=100% size=1>

Re: De-Skilling Apparently you even have a problem here. According to the purists you should never tap a barometer... John <hr width=100% size=1>

Re: De-Skilling But you don't need to tap them do you? <hr width=100% size=1>regards Claymore /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Re: Double tap I never said that!! <hr width=100% size=1>regards Claymore /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I've got one, which came with my previous boat, and which I liberated when the boat was sold. It is now installed on the latest boat. I would agree with their worth, but I don't think Prosser make marine instruments any more. Is there anything similar? I thought I had the only one in the world as I've never seen or heard of any others. Diasappointed of Pwllheli. <hr width=100% size=1>One day, I hope to own a real boat.

Try Oregon Scientific. When I bought my first in the US many years ago, stunned everyone in the UK who saw it. Now this brand is commonly available in the UK <hr width=100% size=1> I asked an economist for her phone number....and she gave me an estimate

>She is equipped with a small digital barograph showing little bar charts< Have you considered upgrading to a large digital barograph? That would make the charts which allow you to navigate to the nearest bar far easier to read. Alternatively, you could hire Sailbad as a pilot. <hr width=100% size=1><A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.writeforweb.com/twister1>Let's Twist Again</A>

I have a hand held version by Oregan Scientific.Shows the actual pressure over the last 24 hrs.I set it using info from Luton airport as I am only 10 miles away.Available on Ant Veals weather site(the pressure that is) <hr width=100% size=1>

trevor_loveday

Setting Barometers at Home Ditchcrawler, If setting the pressure from a reference site (such as Luton airport), you need to know whether to compensate for your altitude above sea level. The pressure information usually available is the sea level pressure but this diminishes at a rate of one millibar every thirty feet. So, for example, if you were actually standing on the runway threshold at Luton airport (height 526ft above mean sea level), you would convert a rather good high of 1030 into 1012. It would then read accurately when used at sea level. This is based on the standard principle of an altimeter in an aircraft, which is nothing other than a rather good barometer in disguise. <hr width=100% size=1>

Hi Paul, This buying boats in Holland is getting to be a habit isn't it? You are right about the barographs, I have one of the little silva windwatches which can also be used to measure the wind speed and altitude so is useful off the boat as well. Particularly interesting when you take it on a plane! I wouldn't be without mine... David <hr width=100% size=1>

"You are right about the barographs, I have one of the little silva windwatches which can also be used to measure the wind speed and altitude so is useful off the boat as well. Particularly interesting when you take it on a plane!" Do you sit outside on the tailplane? How does it measure altitude in a pressurised plane? How does it measure windspeed? Do tell. <hr width=100% size=1>

I would like to know which of these features are most important:

The $200.00 NASA MateoMan stores 7 days of , connects to the ships 12v system. But it does not have alarms or interfaces with a computer.

The 229. Weems and Plath runs on AA , stores 48 hours of , has alarms, but does not interface with a computer.

There are other contenders that have 24 hour history from Science Lab and . They run on and have computer interface. They range around 150.00 to 190.00. so price isnt the issue. It depends on how much history is needed and if alarms are that important.

Looking forward to input!!

Thanks so much in advance!!

Digital Yacht at Newport International Boat Show 2024

Marine Electronics : Newport International Boat Show 2024

We’ve just introduced a new MOB safety product at the Newport Boatshow . Called MOB Alert, it also received a prestigious innovation award at the show.

A Man-Over-Board emergency is a terrifying experience for any captain or crew and key for a safe recovery is to mark the casualty position quickly.  Most chart plotters have a MOB event marker but accessing the function is often buried away in menus and the plotter may be below deck.   The latest yacht racing rules demand a MOB event marker to be within a few feet of the helm and on larger vessels, it may be important to have multiple activation points.

Many boaters are now integrating AIS Beacons into lifejackets so the real-time casualty position can be displayed on plotters but there’s always a delay for the beacon to compute a GPS position and activate a signal and many crew members may not have the expensive technology integrated into the life jacket.

barograph digital yacht

MOB Alert from Digital Yacht synthesises an instant AIS MOB alert (in the same format that an AIS beacon generates) with the press of a button thanks to its universal NMEA 2000 interface.  It outputs this data onto the boat network and also creates an additional industry standard MOB alert PGN (the name given to data fields in NMEA 2000) so there are two methods of activating the plotter MOB function and recording the casualty position.  This guarantees compatibility across all systems.  Activation is via a simple waterproof push switch which can be conveniently mounted at the helm.  Multiple switches can be installed on larger vessels at minimal cost or an outboard style kill cord could also be utilised so physical movement or a fall could activate the function.  MOB Alert uses the boat’s NMEA 2000 GPS data to instantly record the MOB casualty position.

barograph digital yacht

Digital Yacht have also produced an optional, ultra loud alarm that can connect to the boat network and alert independently of the plotter.  This is also self powered from the network so fits in seconds and can also be used as an audio alarm for any other preset NMEA alerts such as depth, wind or engine parameters.  With a output rating of 102dB (same as a jet flying at 100 feet!), this will wake everyone on board!  The MOB system is priced at $209.95 and the external waterproof alarm at $199.95 if required. The product will be available in October 2024

Solving the Dodger Dilemma

We like going one size over what is often recommended for smaller boats. The advantages are a.Less stretch. Nylon can be too stretchy, but polyester not stretchy enough. One size over can be a Goldilocks answer. b.Better wear resistance. Because we like using short chain when hand-hauling, we cover the first 10 feet with a webbing chafe guard. This is very cut resistant, because unlike the rope inside, it is floating and not under tension. c. Better grip. ⅜-in. is pretty hard to grab with the wind is up. ½-in. fits our hands better. Barometers: Altitude and Speedtech Tops for Forecasting

Davis makes a full-featured electronic station for true weather fanatics, while weems & plath offers a touch of tradition..

It takes very little skill or technology to know that youre in the midst of a storm. It takes considerably more to know that a storm is coming. That information, however, can be a lifesaver if youre on the water.

Prior to the early 17th century, a mariners only tools for predicting weather were his senses and a collection of rules on the order of, Red sky at morning, sailors take warning. If a crew member had rheumatism, an aching limb might presage wet weather. The reliability of all these methods left a great deal to be desired.

Torricellis invention of the mercury barometer changed all this. Now it was possible to predict an impending storm with some accuracy many hours before it struck. And the barometer, to this day, remains a fundamental tool for weather prediction (see sidebar on page 22.)

The barometer, in most of its forms, is a simple gadget. Early ones were all made of glass tubes with one end sealed and evacuated and the other immersed in a pool of liquid-usually mercury, because its dense enough to permit the tube to be short. Liquid from the pool, which is open to the atmosphere, is forced up into the tube by the ambient atmospheric pressure until the downward pressure exerted by the liquid exactly equals the atmospheric pressure forcing it up into the tube. A scale-just an ordinary ruler attached to the side of the tube-made it easy to read how far the liquid level had dropped (or risen). This type of liquid barometer is still the most accurate one available.

If the level in the glass rose, atmospheric, or barometric, pressure was increasing; if it fell, pressure was decreasing. Sailors around the world learned very quickly that when the glass fell, foul weather was on its way.

Over the next 350 years, only a few changes were made to this very basic instrument. To help overcome the fragility of the glass tube barometer, variations on the theme were developed that used thin curved sealed tubes or bellows. When the pressure dropped the bellows expanded or the tube straightened. The movement of these aneroid (the word means no liquid) devices was generally transmitted to an indicating needle through a geared mechanical linkage that converted the sealed containers small movement to a larger, easier-to-read needle. This type of barometer is still the most popular one today.

A further refinement was the barograph-a gadget that made it simple to observe pressure changes without having to remain at the barometer. The traditional barograph consists of a pen or similar writing implement attached to the needle of an aneroid barometer, and a rotating paper-covered drum that the pen writes on. If you look at the squiggles left by the pen, you can observe just how the barometric pressure has changed over a prolonged period of time.

In the fast few decades, electronic barometers have appeared on the scene. The pressure-sensing element of these devices works on the same principle as the aneroid barometers bellows, but consists of a thin membrane formed onto a silicon chip over an etched, sealed recess in the chip. Strain gauges on the membrane sense any movement of the membrane, and display it as electrical signals.

Microprocessors take the electrical signals and convert them to a readable form, usually on an LCD display. Because microprocessors have memories and computational capabilities, these electronic barometers also can remember former readings and keep track of pressure changes, as well as use other on-the-chip sensors to monitor such items as date, time, temperature and relative humidity, in addition to air pressure.

What We Tested We were particularly curious to see how the newer electronic barometers stacked up against the classic aneroid barometers and barographs, so we concentrated our product search on electronic models. We found four: two older versions-the Perception II and the Weather Monitor II-from Davis, who has been making weather instrumentation for quite some time now, and a couple of newcomers: the Altitude Electric Barometer and the Speedtech WeatherMate Electronic Barometer. We compared them to two representative instruments from Weems & Plath, a well-known manufacturer and distributor of quality marine instruments, an Atlantis aneroid barometer model #200700 , and a Dampened DeLuxe Quartz aneroid barograph.

We didnt bother including a liquid barometer in our tests; theyre sold as laboratory instruments, but arent often used out in the real world. Nor did we obtain a lot of conventional barometers, since that technology is very well established, and we wouldnt expect to find significant differences among them.

How We Tested Essentially, we tested all the devices by lining them up side-by-side and using them. We adjusted each to a sea level zero setting, and noted their readings, comparing them to NOAA radio reports from a local station.

We ran them for a period of several weeks, noting any differences in readings and/or other aspects of performance. We checked to see how useful each unit was for predicting weather and noted how easy each was to use.

Finally, since we knew that temperature sensitivity is a possible problem with electronic devices, we tested all the units in a large fish tank, using ice, then a heater, to create temperature extremes.

What We Found We found that all the units are inherently accurate to within .02 inches of mercury-or precise enough. All could be adjusted for changes in altitude, although there were differences in the convenience of making the adjustment. This isn’t an adjustment that youll make frequently, unless you trailer your boat between the seashore and mountain lakes. Further, its not critical in predicting weather-actual pressure readings are important but not as important as accurately tracking the pressure changes.

All the units tested can give some indication of trends in barometric pressure changes; there are major differences in how conveniently they do this, and how much operator attention is required.

All operated consistently over a wide temperature range.

Weems & Plath Atlantis Barometer This is a fine example of a classic aneroid barometer. Its a cylindrical instrument in a brass case with flanged face and back, measuring 5-1/4″ in diameter and 3″ deep. It has a nicely engraved face calibrated in both millibars and inches. There is a black indicating needle and a hand-adjustable brass one. It discounts for $125.

The black needle accurately points to the current barometric pressure; you measure trends by setting the adjustable needle to coincide with the current reading, and then coming back in an hour or so to see if theres been a change. Altitude adjustment is made by turning a mechanical adjustment screw.

Bottom Line: The Weems and Plath is simply beautiful. It features a highly polished brass case and carries a lifetime warranty. Its also the least convenient weather forecaster of any of the devices we tested-though thats the fault of the class of barometers in general, not of this particular one.

Weems and Plath Dampened DeLuxe Quartz Barograph This one doesn’t really belong with the other products tested. Not because it doesn’t work-it provides the most complete record of barometric pressure variation of any instrument we tested, recording minute-by-minute changes. Nor because its difficult to use; aside from weekly paper changes and occasional pen replacement, it ran without a hitch, and provided clear, easy-to-read records of what the weather was doing and had been doing for several days.

Its three drawbacks are that its large (11″ x 6-3/4″ x 6-1/2″), its fragile, and its expensive (it lists for $1,362). We talked to Bob Condon at Plath, and he agreed that a barograph is more apt to find a home ashore than aboard; we included it as a benchmark for excellence in trend tracking.

Bottom Line: Like the aneroid barometer, this barograph is a thing of beauty, especially to those who love tradition. Its wood, glass and gleaming brass make it a great choice for a clubhouse or nautically styled living room. Alhough it worked very well, we can’t recommend it for use on the average boat.

Davis Perception II The Davis Perception II represents a sharp break with tradition. A black plastic case (8-1/2″ x 3-1/4″ x 5-1/8″) houses an instrument that reads out barometric pressure, indoor temperature, indoor relative humidity, and, in addition, the time and date. Inasmuch as our main concern is how it functions as a barometer, we wont go into all its other functions in great detail, except to say that they all work.

The $150/$115 (discount) Perception II, like all the electronic models we tried, isn’t water-resistant, but it probably would be mounted belowdecks in any case, which is a good thing, since the LCD display should be kept out of direct sunlight. It operates from a 9- to12-volt power supply (110V AC if you use the adapter thats supplied with the unit); theres an internal 9-volt battery that will keep it running for 24-48 hours without losing any data.

The Perception II has an odd display. On the left side of the screen, it always displays indoor temperature (to the nearest degree) and current barometer reading (to the nearest whole unit). You can pick the units you prefer to be displayed. On the right side of the screen, the display changes depending on which button you push. TEMP, BAR, HUM, TIME are fairly obvious. RECL allows you to store a barometric reading, and recall it at some future time, along with its time and date.

When displaying temperature or barometric pressure, the Perception IIs screen will have either two displays of temperature (the one on the right can optionally be set to read to the nearest tenth of a unit) or two barometer displays. In the lower right corner of the screen theres a horizontal arrow labeled Barometric Trend thats displayed no matter which button is pushed. It tilts upward (or downward) if an increase (or decrease) in pressure over the past hour exceeds .02. Data is updated every 15 minutes.

Aside from the trend arrow, the Perception II has two means of keeping track of barometric trends. One is the store-and-recall function described above, which is the electronic equivalent of the barometers adjustable pointer, and a settable alarm, where you can pick a pressure change over a period of one hour that you wish to set off an audible signal. The alarm is checked every 15 minutes. This alarm feature doesn’t distinguish between a rising pressure and a falling one; you have to look at the trend arrow for that information.

Davis optional Weatherlink is a $120 (discount) attachment that connects the Perception II to a computer, either Mac or PC, enabling you to record more about barometric pressure (and indoor conditions) than any but a dedicated hobbyist would ever want to know. The Perception II carries a one-year warranty.

Bottom Line: The Davis Perception II is a full-featured, flexible monitoring weather station. Its not ideal, we think, for keeping track of barometric trends.

Davis Weather Monitor II The Davis Weather Monitor II is basically a Perception II with added functions. Its $395/$275 price includes an outdoor temperature sensor, a wind vane, and an anemometer for measuring wind velocity. Optional gear includes an external temperature/humidity sensor and a rainfall sensor.

The display is housed in a case the same size and shape as the Perception II, but the display and push-button arrangement are different. The left side of the screen has a permanent display of windspeed and direction. The right side of the screen has a permanently displayed barometer trend arrow, which works exactly like the one on the Perception II.

The screens right side is also used for displaying a wide range of weather-related data. You can get a readout of inside temperature, outside temperature, wind chill factor, barometric pressure, indoor humidity, outdoor humidity and rainfall (if you bought the sensors), time and date, as well as a duplicate display of windspeed and a digital display of wind direction. There are also recallable stored high and low values and programmable alarms for most of these functions. With all these features, the Weather Monitor II handles barometric data in precisely the same way as the Perception II does, with the same limitations. Same warranty, too.

Bottom Line: The Weather Monitor II is really aimed more at the weather hobbyist than the boat owner. It has lots of functions, and becomes even more powerful if you add the Weatherlink and a computer. As such, its a better buy than the Perception II. If youre looking for something to help you anticipate changing weather by monitoring barometric pressure, we think you should read on.

Speedtech WeatherMate Barometer Altitude 8900 Electronic Barometer These two devices are, as far as we can tell, identical in function and in circuitry. Though quite different in appearance, they are sisters under the skin, or subcutaneous siblings, if you prefer. The Altitude 8900 is a small wall-hung package measuring 3″ x 4″ x 1″. The Speedtech is larger but thinner, measuring 4-1/4″ x 5-1/4″ x 3/4″, and can be either wall hung or free-standing. Both have a pair of switches in the back of the case to select metric or English units; both have four push-buttons to adjust for altitude and to recall all readings made over the past 24 hours. The Speedtech mounts these push-buttons on the face of the unit, the Altitude mounts them on the back. The Altitude has a white case, the Speedtech a slate-gray one. These were the only differences we could detect. The Altitude sells for $98.50, the Speedtech for $99.95.

The display consists of a bar graph-or line graph, depending upon what you select-showing current barometer reading and readings taken one, three, six, 12 and 24 hours ago. The current reading is also displayed digitally in the lower righthand corner of the display. This arrangement, we found, is extremely convenient. A glance at the display presents a clear picture of pressure trends over the past day. All readings over the past 24 hours are stored, so the display can be turned back an hour at a time to see what has happened. The display is refreshed every nine seconds.

Setting the initial altitude is somewhat inconvenient. Pressing the Alt button displays the altitude (in meters) youre pre-set for. To change this setting, you must press the Alt button, then the up or down arrow buttons to change the altitude in increments of 10 meters. You must then wait 15 minutes to see if your pressure reading corresponds to the one youre standardizing against-NOAA, in our case. Luckily, most will have to perform this operation only once.

At the top of the display are digital readouts of indoor temperature, relative humidity and a rudimentary comfort index, that reads out as dry, wet, or normal (no display). Below this is a pictorial display that shows the forecast: A picture of the sun (for clear weather), sun plus clouds (for slightly cloudy), clouds alone (cloudy), and clouds with rain (rainy) for 12-24 hours ahead.

These units are self-contained and will run for about one year, were told, on four AAA batteries (theres a low-battery indicator). The display is not illuminated, which shouldnt present a problem if the unit is mounted in a lit cabin. Neither model is waterproof and, like all devices employing LCD displays, both should be kept out of direct sunlight for prolonged periods.

Bottom Line: A choice between the Altitude 8900 and the Speedtech Electronic Barometer really depends on which configuration, or color, you prefer. Both units admirably perform their job of tracking trends in atmospheric pressure, with a display system that needs virtually no attention.

Recommendations/Conclusions A barometer, particularly one such as the Speedtech and Altitude that allows you to monitor pressure trends at a glance, makes an excellent backup to a dedicated weather radio.

If youre a weather hobbyist, Davis Weather Monitor II is much more versatile than the Perception II for not much more money. If you don’t opt for a Weatherlink and computer, youll find that the Weather Monitor isn’t as handy for tracking barometer changes as the less expensive Speedtech and Altitude instruments.

If you want to do it the traditional way, a nicely polished brass aneroid barometer will certainly do the job. And while we are certainly in favor of tradition, wed probably supplement one with either the plain-Jane Altitude or Speedtech for planning our next days cruise.

March 2, 2018    Updates for Wi-Fi, USB, NMEA 0183 gateways and CAN Log Viewer software

More data bars and barograph in web gauges, more messages supported, support of SeaSmart and MiniPlex messages and much more.

Barograph and depth graph of web gauges

Figure 1. Barograph and depth graph of web gauges

Meet the spring with new weather instruments! The web gauges of the Wi-Fi Gateway now includes a barograph! You can set up the graph range from 10 minutes to 24 hours. Collected data are saved to the local storage of a browser, meaning that the historical graph will not be lost after page reload or browser restart. We also added inside (transmitted in the XDR sentence of NMEA 0183) and dew point temperatures (transmitted in the MDA sentence). Transmission of inside temperature and dew point is also added to the USB Gateway and dew point temperature transmission is added to the NMEA 0183 Gateway .

The Navigation list of web gauges is enriched with rudder angle data bars (up to two rudders are supported), cross track error, magnetic variation and deviation. A full list of gauges and data bars is available here , and it is already comparable with the same list of some instrument displays.

Video 1. Web gauges integrated to "smart boat" system

We are also proud to share an interesting video from a customer, who integrated web gauges to his own "smart boat" system based on Raspberry Pi. It is a very well-designed and nice-looking installation, in the video you can see web gauges in action and data from Wi-Fi Gateway at the bottom of the main page. This installation utilizes some of our other products, too. One of the benefits of this system is that the owner can monitor the boat from home and even control some systems, because the system has Wi-Fi relays connected .

Imray Boat Instruments connected to Wi-Fi Gateway

Figure 2. Imray Boat Instruments connected to Wi-Fi Gateway

If you are looking for a good instrument display app for IPhone or IPad, we can recommend Imray Boat Instruments . This app has a good set of data bars and gauges, including historical data, supports AIS and only costs about USD $7. We found only two things which do not work: the voltage gauge and the pressure gauge. Unfortunately, the app is supplied without any documentation, and we failed to find anything on the internet and received no response from support over two days. Pressure is available in the MDA sentence from our gateway and it is displayed correctly by many apps, including OpenCPN . But voltage is a more intriguing thing, and these data can be transmitted in the XDR sentence only, and issues may come up.

The pervasive problem of marine apps, including Imray Boat Instruments, is the use of the old NMEA 0183 protocol, which has one serious problem, the lack of many data types. For example, it supports only engine revolutions. Other engine data can be transmitted in a XDR message, which has the following set of fields: transducer type, measurement data, measurement units, and transducer name. Transducer names are not standardized, and one device may name the engine oil temperature transducer as ENGINE_OIL, and another one as OILTEMP and so on. The same situation occurs with the voltage. A good NMEA 0183 application should have a user interface for mapping of transducers. We have never come across a mobile app with such an interface.

To avoid this sad situation, SeaSmart and MiniPlex gateways wrap some NMEA 2000 messages into NMEA 0183 sentences. Here is an example of how NMEA 2000 battery messages look in NMEA 0183:

This approach is not universal and has its drawbacks, but it works and it is supported in the popular iNavx app . It is the only way to get engine, battery and fluid data in iNavx . We added both formats to support the Wi-Fi and USB gateways for battery, fluid (fuel, water and waste tanks), engine and transmission messages. MiniPlex format (MXPGN messages) is used for output messages only, and SeaSmart format (PCDIN messages) is used in both directions. If you don't need this functionality, you can block these messages (using 3-character formatters PGN and DIN) in the gateway's filter settings.

If you are developer, we recommend supporting SeaSmart format (documentation is available for download ), because this implementation is simpler in cases of long messages, such as NMEA 2000 PGN 127489 "Engine Parameters, Dynamic".

We are also fixed some bugs in the USB, Wi-Fi and 0183 Gateways and recommend this update for all users. The requirement for an APB sentence in addition to RMB to manage NMEA 2000 autopilots from NMEA 0183 applications is now removed, and we will be glad to get your feedback about what autopilots and what applications have been tested to create a list for publication.

We also updated CAN Log Viewer software. Some bugs were fixed, and we added support of dew point temperature, magnetic variation and deviation, and the possibility to open TCP and UDP ports from command line. This free tool, initially designed as an internal tool for technical support, has become popular and we are planning to add NMEA 2000 devices enumeration, programming of device instances and installation descriptions to the next release.

Installation descriptions are used by many manufacturers not only to save notes, but also to change device settings by entering commands into these fields. This approach is used in our Humidity Sensor , and will be also used in other our sensors soon.

Firmware updates for USB and Wi-Fi Gateways (version 1.11), NMEA 0183 Gateway ( 1.10 ) and CAN Log Viewer software ( 1.09 ) are available in the Downloads section.

Electronic Barometers/Barographs?

Well, I need to get a Barograph (logging barometer) and I'm looking at a few different electronic versions. The one I'd like to get is over $1,000 with accessories, but I'll post it here for grins. Any thoughts on the others? I'm leaning towards the NASA Marine unit right now. NASA Marine Unit (I'd get it without the wind speed stuff) Weems & Plath Aquatech P-Raeber Really expensive but very cool

I have an earlier version of the Weems & Plath unit. It has served well enough. Only real complaint has been that it has a non-adjustable threshold for high-wind warning, which leads to false alarms in the tropics (because there's a twice-daily 3mb change in baro pressure). Other than that, ok.

I have a Speedtech unit I bought second-hand for $35. It's no longer made, and eats just 4 AAA batteries per year. It is ideal for me, and logs 24 hours of readings. You may wish to simply just get a good aneroid barometer and a wrist-top watch that records baro info like those from Suunto (I glance at mine a few times a day in changeable weather). Conversely, get a weather station with output to a PC and record and display historigraphs that way. Other than that, the W&P unit is most similar to my old Speedtech. Look at the Oregon Instruments site; they may have something appropriate, too.

I have a Weems and Plath # 4002, I think it's the current model, a simple electronic barometer. It uses AA batteries which last about a year. IT displays history at 2,4,6,12,24 and 48 hr intervals and lets you set an gale warning alarm for the pressure change you set in. The only fearure I'd like that it doesn't have is a dew point as we get fog often here in the spring/fall.

It is only 99 USD. To make the graphs you can use Voyage Recorder (NMEA 2000 data logger) and YDVR Converter software that free and comes with the Recorder.

Casio wristwatch and a log book entry every hour. That's what I do. Cheap, lightweight, simple, available everywhere. Also the logbook rather forces one to look at the values and grok the changes.

NKE makes a very good NEMA Barometer for about $500. It logs 10 hours of data but can be interfaced to a computer or MFD for longer readings.

barograph

A barograph is a recording aneroid barometer, an instrument which measures atmospheric pressure over a fixed period and records its fluctuations on a moving sheet of graduated paper or an LCD screen.

These devices are useful for tracking weather variations, especially disturbances. This information is particularly important to offshore recreational boaters and commercial vessels.

Mechanical, analog barographs use a pen on a moving arm to trace pressure changes over time on a sheet of graduated paper mounted on a drum. The pen moves up and down as a function of pressure as the drum rotates at a fixed rate. This produces an easily-read pressure curve. Digital models display the curve on an LCD screen.

Analog barographs consume paper, but offer aesthetic advantages. They are often mounted in an attractive case made of fine wood and brass with glass windows.

Explosive Blaze: Marina del Rey Yacht 'The Admiral' Sinks After Fiery Disaster

W hat began as a peaceful Wednesday evening in Marina del Rey erupted into chaos when The Admiral , a 100-foot luxury yacht, burst into flames. Docked in Basin A, the yacht ignited just after 8:30 p.m., fueled by fireworks and nearly 1,000 rounds of ammunition stored onboard. As fireworks exploded into the night sky, thick black smoke blanketed the marina.

Despite the rapid response from the LA County Fire Department, efforts to contain the blaze proved difficult. Firefighters battled the flames from both the water and the docks, but the fire’s intensity and the yacht’s twin diesel engines made the situation nearly impossible to control. By 10:30 p.m., The Admiral had listed to one side and sank into the marina.

The next morning, cleanup efforts began, led by the U.S. Coast Guard, as crews worked to contain 4,000 gallons of spilled diesel fuel. Air quality tests confirmed no immediate risk to residents, and officials monitored the water to prevent further contamination.

Built in 1986 and last valued at nearly a million dollars, The Admiral was a symbol of luxury. Now, it lies half-submerged, its grandeur reduced to ash. Two passengers on board escaped without injury, but the fire’s cause remains under investigation. Marina residents are left grappling with the shocking spectacle of a quiet harbor night gone tragically wrong.

The Steamrock SB-42 digital barometer detects and records changes in atmospheric pressure. It displays current atmospheric pressure, a graph showing changes in that pressure over 84 hours, and a World Meteorological Organization (WMO) symbol depicting changes over three hours. Beneath that symbol is a numeric value representing net value changes over the three hours.

Atmospheric pressure is measured every 15 minutes and is stored in a built-in memory. Results are shown on a high contrast sun readable e-paper display. Steamrock SB-42 is a standalone device that does not require software updates, internet connection, or an external power supply. It operates on three AAA batteries up to one year, with remaining charge displayed using a battery icon and percent remaining number.

Although this barograph is not a tool for extremely precise lab measurement, it is perfectly suitable for keeping track of atmospheric pressure tendencies. Thus, it can be used as an aid to navigation and an instrument for weather observation.

The measuring element of the FISCHER barographs is a 7-fold set of membranes, made of a copper-beryllium alloy, which has proven its worth for pressure measurement due to its excellent elastic properties. Ageing, hysteresis and elastic aftereffects practically do not occur. The influence of temperature on the can set and the transmission system is compensated by a bimetal in the entire measuring range and in a temperature range from -30 to +40 °C. The bimetal is used for the entire measuring range. All axes of the precision mechanical movement are mounted in stone, so that the instrument has only minimal static friction.

  1. The digital age: barometers vs. barographs

But the Wempe aneroid is also more than 30 years old and still accurate. As far as price goes, you can buy a ship's aneroid barometer for $150 to $350 depending on looks and size. Digital home weather stations sell for $50 to over $300 depending on range of options, including connectivity.

  2. The barograph perfected

The Mintaka Duo is a modern, electronic marine barograph that can display barometric trends going out to 120 days, connect to your computer via USB and has a pressure-averaging option to compensate for semi-diurnal variation in the tropics. And it can do all that without any ink, stylus or rolls of paper.

  3. Barograph app keeps track

Barograph app keeps track. Having access to marine forecasts and gridded binary (grib) files is great for voyagers. 6. Electronic Barometer/Barograph What are important features?

The electronic barometers allow you to calibrate them (use a close by airport reading), that is accurate enough. No, a single point like that only means that at that one point it's correct. What is more important is to ensure that as the pressure rises and falls, it still reports correctly.
