Sunreef Zero Cat

It’s the futuristic green tech that really sets this cat apart, though. Sunreef says the Zero Cat will be equipped with a reformer that can transform methanol into hydrogen . The fuel-cell system will generate clean energy that will be used for both the electric propulsion and the hotel load, according to the yard. As such, the yacht will produce no emissions, nitrogen oxides, or sulfur oxides. It will also make minimal noise and vibrations, ensuring you have a smooth and peaceful ride.

In addition to the hydrogen production system, the Zero Cat will produce more green power from hydro generators and solar cells. The latter, which Sunreef calls a “solar skin,” is built into the yacht’s entire bodywork and can continuously generate power from the sun so long as it’s shining. The “solar skin” has already appeared on a number of models, including a  100-foot sailboat , a smaller  80-foot sailer , and an  80-foot cat .

Sunreef 80 Eco catamaran

Sunreef has even found a way to counter the stigma that hydrogen power has carried since the Hindenburg crash in 1937. It says no high-pressure hydrogen storage will be needed on board and thus it can guarantee the highest level of safety.

Sunreef Yachts new zero catamaran

Sunreef Yachts reveals first images of new zero-emission catamaran in development

Polish yard Sunreef Yachts has released the first images of its zero-emission catamaran named the Zero Cat. By producing clean hydrogen, the shipyard reaffirms its commitment to discovering "cleaner and greener yachting solutions".

Currently in development with Sunreef's R&D department, the new sailing superyacht will measure in excess of 27.4 metres and aims to combine hydrogen power with electric propulsion for a new standard of eco-conscious cruising. It will generate net zero emissions, no nitrogen oxides or sulfur oxides.

According to the yard, the Zero Cat will house a hydrogen generator to produce its own hydrogen sourced from green methanol on board, which will be used to power the majority of the yacht's energy requirements. Other advantages include low noise and vibration levels.

Additional green power will come from an onboard solar power system, with solar cells built into the hulls and superstructure.

The mix of power feeds into a fuel cell system used to generate zero-emission energy for both the electric propulsion and hotel load, including the air conditioning, watermakers and onboard electronics.

"Our goal is to revolutionise the industry by offering discerning customers an exceptional zero-emission sailing experience," Sunreef co-founder and CTO Nicolas Lapp said in a statement. "This project represents a milestone in our ongoing commitment to protecting our oceans and preserving the natural beauty of the sea."

The Zero Cat follows a series of new project announcements from Sunreef, including a new hybrid power catamaran range known as Ultima and a new 33M Explorer Eco model with transpacific capabilities. The yard also has 13 orders currently on order, according to BOATPro , with deliveries extending until 2025.

Sunreef Is Working on a Zero Cat

  • By Yachting Staff
  • August 7, 2023

Sunreef Yachts Zero Cat

Sunreef Yachts says its research-and-development department is working on a Zero Cat: a sustainable sailing yacht that can convert methanol to hydrogen, combining with electric propulsion to create zero emissions and what the builder promises will be “unlimited autonomy.”

The Zero Cat will “measure above 90 feet,” according to Sunreef. It will also have a solar-power system with solar cells built into the body of the yacht.

Sunreef says the fuel-cell and solar-cell systems will provide energy for propulsion as well as hotel loads.

“Our goal is to revolutionize the industry by offering discerning customers an exceptional zero-emission sailing experience,” Nicolas Lapp, chief technology officer and co-founder of Sunreef, stated in a press release. “This project represents a milestone in our ongoing commitment to protecting our oceans and preserving the natural beauty of the sea.”

What else is new at Sunreef? In the past year, the builder also unveiled the Ultima, a range of hybrid power catamarans . The first models are the 45 Ultima and 55 Ultima.

Exclusive - Zero Cat, the zero emission catamaran from Sunreef Yachts

July 14 2023

Written by Yachting Art English Edition

In just a few years, Sunreef Yachts, the world leader in the market for semi-custom luxury catamarans, has established itself as the reference player in eco-responsible yachting, both for its sailing catamarans and its motor catamarans, in through its ECO, electric or hybrid ranges.

Exclusive - Zero Cat, the zero emission catamaran from Sunreef Yachts

Over the nautical seasons, these have taken over from the yard's traditional units. An enviable situation, rare in boating and yachting, but which however did not encourage the Sunreef Yachts teams to rest on their laurels. Because with ZERO CAT, Sunreef is going even further, by announcing a zero-emission luxury catamaran! A few years ago, imagining a luxury catamaran sailboat, 90 feet long, self-sufficient in energy and with unlimited autonomy, would have been a challenge.

This challenge is clearly no longer one on the side of Gdansk, headquarters of the Polish shipyard Sunreef Yachts, which after having imagined electric and hybrid ECO catamarans, is now developing a ZERO EMISSION model called Zero Cat.

At the heart of this concept, an engine using a hydrogen fuel cell, generating electricity from green methanol, the system benefiting from the green energy produced on board by the yacht's solar energy system, with cells solar panels integrated into the entire structure of the yacht.

The fuel cell system produces clean energy without any emissions, an energy used both for electric propulsion and household electronics (on-board consumers).

This innovation is all the more interesting in that it incorporates all the specificities developed over the years by Sunreef in the field of eco-responsible yachting, namely:

  • the integration of photovoltaic panels with XXL capacity integrated into the sides, roof cap and mast
  • the installation of a powerful and safe battery bank, partly developed in-house
  • the implementation of consumers (air conditioning, desalination, etc.) offering consumption levels never before achieved on this type of unit
  • the choice of optimized electric motors
  • the installation of really efficient hydrogenerators

With Zero CAT, Sunreef Yachts' goal was to develop a sustainable sailing superyacht, whose non-sail propulsion was to ensure self-sufficiency and unlimited range. By combining hydrogen energy and electric propulsion, the Zero Cat should once again give the Polish shipyard a good head start.

The advantage of green methanol

Unlike hydrogen produced on land and loaded on board a ship (or a truck), green methanol does not require any modification of the ship's tanks, nor complex and particularly expensive logistics (compression, cooling....) even delicate.

This is the advantage of e-fuels, these "green" fuels, made from photovoltaic energy, of which Siemens Energy is a pioneer. The production process of e-methanol is based on the chemical combination of CO2 and hydrogen. Hydrogen is first produced in an electrolyser, before being converted into methanol in a reactor by catalysis with carbon dioxide (CO2) from recovered and stored CO2. To manufacture e-methanol (carbon neutral), hydrogen from renewable electricity (photovoltaic or wind power) is used in combination with biogenic CO2. E-methanol can reduce CO2 emissions by 95%, nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions by 80%, and completely eliminate sulfur oxide (SOx) and particulate emissions.

Demystifying yacht classification A, B, C, D

N.B. For your information, a more recent article was published on 24 Oct 2022 on the same subject, click here for direct access.

Beaufort_wind_scale

Demystifying yacht classification :  Class A, B, C and D

Since 1998, CE certification is required for all recreational boats entering or being sold in Europe obliging boat manufacturers to respect certain building and security standards.  Therefore, yachts ( boats ) are classified into four categories depending on their aptitude to confront navigational conditions taking into account both force of the wind and height of the waves.  The categories are not to limit the area and distance of navigation (that is defined by security equipement onboard) but  to  sensitize the owner and/or captain of the boats capacities to navigate in complete security.

Let us start with the Beaufort Scale.   A scale for classifying the force of the wind ranging from 0 (calm) to 12 (hurricane).   It was devised by an admiral in the British Navy, Francis Beaufort, to uniform the description of the effect of different winds at sea.

There is a direct link between the Beaufort scale and boat classification.   For discussion purposes, we will use only the 6, 7 and 8 forces.

A Class A yacht ( boat ) is a vessel that is built to navigate the open ocean and surpass a force 8 on the Beaufort scale and surpass waves higher that 4 meters.   These yachts are constructed to be self sufficient in hostile seas.

A Class B yacht ( boat ) is a vessel built to navigate on the offshore waters (200 miles and less) and can substain UP TO force 8 and waves UP TO 4 meters.

A Class C boat is a vessel built to navigate inshore such as lakes, rivers, bays and close to the shore and can sustain UP TO force 6 and waves UP TO 2 meters.

A Class D boat is built for protected or sheltered waters such as canals, rivers, small lakes and sustain a force 4 and waves UP TO .3 meters (less that 1 ft).

With this said, you can understand that the Class A yacht ( boat ) respects a rigorous building code more so than a Class B and so forth.    But regardless of the class, it is strongly discouraged to navigate in a force 7 for the reasons of safety and comfort as « pleasure » should always be on the agenda.  Always consult the weather forecast prior to leaving any port and check hourly the weather situation.

Classification is very important and should be on your question list before purchasing any boat or yacht.

Classification rules are developed to assess the structural strength and integrity of the essential parts of the hull, the reliability and function of the propulsion, steering systems, power generation and all the other features installed on board which contribute to guarantee the main essential services of yacht.

Also for a class A, the portholes will be more resistant against a sustained wave, the drains to evacuate the water more abundant and of good size, the joints of the hull more hermetic, in short everything is in place to prevent water from s’ infiltrate on board.

By way of information, let us quote for example all the Ferretti yachts (60 to 96 feet), Pershing (60 to 115), the Riva (44 to 122) are all of class A just like the Magellano range at Azimut including also the 66 Flybridge.

Ferretti yachts (500, 550, 670 fly and over), Pershing (7X and over), Azimut Yachts (62, 64, 66, 68 Fly and over, the Sport Series 7X and over, all Magellano) are Class A.  There are also other classifications such as RINA and American Bureau of Shipping, Bureau Veritas, Det Norske Veritas, Germanischer Lloyd, Lloyd Register, that are more precise regulations and we will cover this later in another article.

Below is the graph of the Beaufort Scale along with photos.

Welcome to the Com-Pac Idea

Com-Pac Yachts began business in 1974 with our first boat, the Com-Pac 16. The idea then was to build a seaworthy yacht with a strong commitment to value. (For the full story, see Hutchins Company Profile .) Since then we have expanded our line and today we have twelve models, six cat-rigged sailboats, five sloop rigged sailboats and one power launch. The Com-Pac line covers a wide range of sizes from a 14' day sailor to the Com-Pac 27/3 cruising yacht . Each model, regardless of size, is built with the same exacting attention to detail and that same commitment to value.

All the convenience of our cat boats in a sloop-rigged daysailer with a 9' cockpit --> --> The Launch is a comfortable, multiuse yacht for a leisurely cruise for sightseeing, to dinner or, even, the occasional overnighter. --> -->

Our line of modern cat-rigged models (dubbed “A New Breed of Catboat”) offer the ultimate in trailer-sailing ease and rig set up. All come with the Mastendr™ quick-rig sailing system that allows for the boom, sail, and gaff to be left installed on the boat while the mast is folded or raised. The shrouds stay attached and the head stay disconnects with the flip of the pre-adjusted forestay self-locking lever. This system, unique to Com-Pac, adds an ease and convenience to trailer sailing that is really astounding. Your mast is up and you are ready to go in seconds, not minutes.

Our newest sloop-rigged models are the Eclipse SL , the Legacy , and the Legacy Sport daysailer. We consider these yachts “crossover” models. We have taken all of the convenience and features of our cat boat line and applied them to these new exciting sloops. Features include the Mastendr™ (Eclipse), Boomtendr™ (Legacy & Sport), keel centerboard hull configuration and low riding trailers for ease of launching and retrieval.

Com-Pac Horizon Day Cat

The three traditionally rigged sloops ( 23/IV , 23 Pilothouse , and 27/3 ) have full masthead, eight stay rigs and fixed keels. As such they can be sailed in areas and conditions that lesser sloops would be wise to avoid. Many of our sloops have long cruises to their credit. Coastal cruising, Gulf of Mexico crossings, and long term Bahamas cruises are a few that are recorded. The 23/IV and 23 Pilothouse are trailerable but they are still full fledged cruising yachts. We did not compromise sea-worthiness or comfort. When the 23/IV or 23 Pilothouse is fitted with the available custom trailer, they can easily be taken over the road for vacation or winter storage.

The new launch with the available electric propulsion is perfect for an evening of touring the harbor, canals and waterways or even more varied areas of interest with the standard 2 cylinder diesel engine.

All of our models come with an extraordinary list of amenities and standard equipment. From the 14' Picnic Cat to the 27' cruiser, you will find everything you need for that day sail, day cruise, weekend getaway or extended cruise.

If you are looking for something other than an “off the shelf” yacht, then Com-Pac is for you. Many builders today do not give you any more choices than cushion fabric and canvas colors. Whether your yacht is 14' or 27', nowhere else will you find the freedom of involvement and creativity you will find by sitting down with us and discussing your dream yacht. Our answer to 95% of requests for personalization is “we can do that.”

2024 Boat of the Year: Best Cruising Catamaran Over 50 Feet

  • By Herb McCormick
  • December 15, 2023

Fountaine Pajot Aura 51

It was perhaps fitting that Fountaine-Pajot and Lagoon Catamarans—two longtime pillars in the production catamaran community—came head-to-head for the title of best cruising cat over 50 feet for 2024. Talk about symmetry: Both boats measure in at about 51 feet. A nearly exact price point of just around $1.6 million. Each is produced by one of the pioneering French multihull builders that’s been at the game for decades. In some ways, this matchup was not unlike a heavyweight boxing bout between Ali and Frazier, or a good old-fashioned feud like the Hatfields and McCoys. It was a duel that the judges relished and dreaded because the competition would undoubtedly be close—but there could be only one champ.

Winner: Fountaine-Pajot Aura 51

During deliberations, judge Mark Pillsbury summarized the overall layout of the Aura 51, a viewpoint shared by his fellow panelists: “A length overall of 51 feet is enough space to give designers options when it comes to how a cruising cat is laid out, and Fountaine-Pajot takes advantage of this by offering a variety of layouts, with up to six cabins in charter mode. The boat we sailed in Annapolis had what they term a ‘double Maestro layout,’ i.e., a master cabin aft in each hull, with guest quarters forward. It would be a boat that two owners might share, sailing separately or together occasionally. I really liked their decision to locate the helm station on the Aura partway between the cockpit and the flybridge, which they called the sky lounge. That way, the skipper stays in contact with guests below and above, and has good visibility astern when docking. I also like the separation between the steering seat and the three winches on the cabin top. Shorthanded, the autopilot can be engaged when the skipper steps forward to trim sails, and with crew, the trimmer has room to work and the skipper room to steer. We had light wind the day we sailed, only about 5 to 8 knots, and the Aura made 4 knots closehauled—a good run for a big, well-stocked cruising cat.

Judge Herb McCormick weighed in: “I really thought that this category was a toss-up. Both boats will be sold to private owners and will also be set up for the charter trade. At the end of the day, what leaned me toward the Aura was that helmsman’s arrangement, centered between the cockpit and the top deck. I loved that big flybridge on the Lagoon, which will be a great space especially on charter, but this is the best ‘cruising’ cat, not best ‘charter’ cat, and that one feature I believe is better-suited to real cruising.”

Runner-up: Lagoon Catamarans 51

Lagoon 52 being tested during Boat of the Year

The French boatbuilding industry is to be applauded for its forward-thinking approach to sustainable building practices and exploring next-generation powering and propulsion systems. Judge Tim Murphy focused in on Lagoon’s approach: “This is largest Lagoon fully intended for owner-operators. Beginning with 55, the next size up in the range, a professional captain is expected to be involved. Lagoon produces 275 boats per year. From this year’s Boat of the Year fleet, Lagoon is at the forefront of carbon-positive materials: 35 percent biomaterial in the polyester resin (compared with 14 percent last year), with hemp fibers employed instead of glass in some of the smaller molded parts. The production plant is certified ISO 9001, 40001, 50001, which is notable for the commitment to sustainable manufacturing.”

Unlike McCormick, judge Mark Pillsbury liked the Lagoon’s helm station just fine. He said: “The 51 is a big boat, but the layout of the helm station on the flybridge makes the boat simple to operate with a shorthanded crew. All sail controls are led to three winches on the cabin top, and there is a Harken electric sidewinder winch adjacent to the wheel to control the traveler. And for a large cruising cat, I thought that the 51 sailed well. The steering was very smooth. In 8 to 12 knots of breeze, we saw boatspeeds in the high 6s and 7s depending on our point of sail. The view from the helm was tremendous.”

What’s in a Rig? Cat Rig

By: Pat Reynolds Sailboat Rigs , Sailboats

What’s in a Rig Series # 7 – The Cat Rig

Typically speaking, a cat rig is a single mast situated well forward, near the bow, which carries a large single sail and has no standing rigging, sometimes referred to as “unstayed.” An Optimist, Laser or Sabot are common (smaller) examples of a cat rig, but many bigger boats utilize the set-up.

As we’ve established in other What’s in a Rig articles, rig choice is always subjective. Most folks go for the popular Marconi (or Bermuda) sloop rig, but others like to be a bit different and work with less standard arrangements. The thinking behind choosing a cat rig as apposed to a yawl for instance, is probably rooted in more practicality than romance. Take it east yawl sailors, we know we know, they are more stable, and have advantages for long range cruising. Maybe, but we also know you like the way they look! Cat rigs, on the other hand, are truly simple to sail and manage. With one large sail and no rigging, a cat rig is up and running in moments and they can be single-handed quite easily. There is also considerable savings not having to maintain, tune or replace expensive rigs. And yet another benefit of the cat rig design on bigger boats is the amount of salon space they deliver. With a mast placed so far forward, the cabins are often very roomy.

So what’s the downside? Well, you’ve heard this tune before: upwind performance. There’s a reason why the common sloop rig is so incredibly popular. Some may say it’s because racing has such a powerful influence on the market, but the truth probably more accurately revolves around the fact that sloops are simple to sail and just go upwind so very well. There are modern cat rig designs like Wylie boats that have innovations (the wishbone boom) that address the upwind limitation, but most classic cat rigs suffer in the upwind department. However they do not suffer if fast efficient tacking and comfortable downwind running is your bag. Tacking a cat boat is basically one quick turn through the wind and it all pretty much happens for you.

Cat rigs are simple, maneuverable, efficient and economical. They’re especially suited for short-handed sailing and downwind passages. And a catboat sailor is probably someone who doesn’t mind traveling on a less trodden path. If you plan on a long downwind journey alone or with one other, take a look at some catboats – might just fit the bill.

Captain of superyacht that sank off Sicily declines to respond to prosecutor questions, lawyer says

The captain of a superyacht that sank during a storm off Sicily last week, killing seven people, has decided not to respond to prosecutors’ questions

ROME — The captain of a superyacht that sank during a storm off Sicily last week, killing seven people, decided not to respond to prosecutors’ questions Tuesday, his lawyer said.

James Cutfield, a 51-year-old New Zealand national, is under investigation for possible manslaughter and culpable shipwreck charges and was questioned for the third time by the Termini Imerese prosecutors Tuesday.

“He just exercised his right to remain silent, probably prosecutors were expecting that,” lawyer Aldo Mordiglia told The Associated Press, adding that the captain’s legal team has just been named and needs time to work on his defensive strategy.

Cutfield was among 15 survivors of the Aug. 19 sinking that killed British tech magnate Mike Lynch , his daughter Hannah and five others.

Chief prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio, who’s heading the investigation, has said his team would consider each possible element of responsibility including those of the captain, the crew, individuals in charge of supervision and the yacht’s manufacturer.

The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged luxury yacht, went down near the Mediterranean island in southern Italy. Investigators are focusing on how a sailing vessel deemed “unsinkable” by its manufacturer, Italian shipyard Perini Navi, sank while a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed.

Prosecutors said the event was “extremely rapid” and could have been a “downburst” — a localized, powerful wind that descends from a thunderstorm and spreads out rapidly upon hitting the ground.

The crew was saved, except for the chef, while six passengers were trapped in the hull.

Is The 'Black Cat' Air Jordan 4 Returning in 2025?

Early reports point to the popular retro coming back next year.

Joining the growing number of popular Air Jordan styles returning next year, we're now learning that the "Black Cat" Jordan 4 could be coming back in 2025.

News of the purported retro was first reported by leakers Sneaker Files, @zSneakerheadz and @sneakermarketro on Instagram, revealing that the "Black Cat" Air Jordan 4 is scheduled to re-release in late 2025. There are no leaked images of the upcoming retro at the time of writing and they likely won't hit the net for at least a few months, but it's expected to be a straightforward retro with an updated shape.

The "Black Cat" Air Jordan 4 was first released in May 2006 and was last retroed in January 2020. Earlier this year, Complex staff named the style the best "Black Cat" Air Jordan sneaker to date.

Currently, the "Black Cat" Air Jordan 4 retro has yet to be confirmed by Jordan Brand.
