Roooobääärt! Meine Nacht bei den Geissens in St. Tropez

Unscheinbar: Das Geissen-Hotel in St. Tropez.

Unscheinbar: Das Geissen-Hotel in St. Tropez.

Quelle: Uwe Dulias

Alles in mir schrie: „Weg!

(sks)

Inside Arev, The Colourful New Hotel In St Tropez

Image may contain Architecture Building House Housing Villa Hacienda Outdoors and Plant

Admittedly, I walked into Arev, a new hotel in St Tropez, a little worse for the wear. The night before, I was at a wedding nearby where the reception started at 9pm and didn’t stop until the sun came up. But while most of my fellow guests had taken a shuttle straight to Nice Airport, I was here for an extra day. So there I was, bleary-eyed and hungover in a wrinkled dress – likely not the Vogue editor they expected, but the one they got.

Immediately, the staff sprung into action. An attendant brought me a cappuccino and a pastry basket, while another told me they would expedite my room to be ready for an early check-in. In the meantime, they gently suggested, perhaps I should check out the spa?

A common space at Arev St Tropez designed by Luis Bustamante.

At a hotel like this, it’s easy to offer such personalised service. There are only 43 rooms, meaning even at full occupancy, there are under 90 guests at all times. Plus, there’s no formal check-in desk or lobby at Arev. Instead, you walk into what feels like an entryway to a house – except instead of a living room before you, there’s a restaurant and hotel bar.

Madrilenõ designer Luis Bustamante is the mastermind behind the interiors. I can best describe them as like being inside the world’s most impeccably decorated yacht: couches and chairs are covered in navy or red upholstery, whereas the ceiling is a light wood. The walls, meanwhile, are painted either royal blue or white. Stripes, in all forms, abound.

The Strand restaurant’s terrace.

Although there are plenty of inside areas to enjoy, the outdoor terrace – delightfully shaded from the St Tropez sun – is where I decide to take my coffee. There’s an olive tree there, which a waiter tells me is over 100 years old. A garden sits beyond.

It’s tranquil here this morning, but later in the afternoon, it picks up. A DJ begins playing by the pool to the delight of several guests: this in St Tropez, a place with a world-renowned party scene, after all. At Arev, there are plenty of places to be social: their courtyard, called “Place des Oliviers”, boasts two shops, another restaurant, and a food truck, while the grounds also include a padel court. I’m in a more solitary mood, however. So I decide to go into town to do some shopping. It’s only a five-minute walk – or two-minute bike ride – away.

Place des Oliviers at Arev St Tropez boasts two shops and a food truck.

When I return, it’s time for dinner. The Arev team has revived the Strand Restaurant and Champagne Lounge, a legendary St Tropez restaurant that closed a few years ago. Now, it’s located at the hotel, and it is delicious : I splurge on the Dover sole and eat most of it, even though it’s big enough for two. I wash it down with a delicious blackberry mocktail. (At this point, I’m still struggling, but in my attempts at being a semi-respectable journalist, I ask the table next to me about their alcoholic beverages. “It’s the best cocktail I’ve ever had!” the woman responds enthusiastically.)

Just then, I receive an Instagram DM from my friend who was at the wedding. “Are you at the Arev?” they ask. “Me too.”

“I’m at dinner, come say hi!” I respond.

They start typing, then stop, then start typing again. “I’m already in bed. They’re so comfy here.”

And just like that, I get my check.

My room boasts the same nautical-inspired colour scheme as the social spaces in the hotel, but a little more pared back: bright colours serve as trims for a more soothing palette of whites and creams. In my bathroom are products by local company Maison St that are made from Tropezian herbs. There’s also a small patio with chaise loungers – perfect if you want to soak up the sun in private.

A guest room at Arev boasts a nautical colour scheme.

I climb into bed and my friend is right: with its French bed linens and Hungarian goose-down duvet and pillow, it feels like a cloud. With a switch, I activate my blackout shades. Sleep comes almost instantaneously.

The next morning, I wake up completely refreshed. I get a smoothie and avocado toast for breakfast, and text my friend if she’d like to join me. No – she’s still sleeping.

Alone, I start mulling my afternoon… and how that DJ by the pool now sounds fun, actually.

Marinas and moorings in Saint-Tropez

Discover the top Saint-Tropez moorings

With a beguiling mix of old wooden sailing masts and gleaming superyachts, the beautiful fishing village of Saint Tropez is perhaps the most famous yacht marina in the world.

Saint Tropez is a very splendid village, and its marina is an exciting place to be. However, given the competition and steep prices of a midsummer berth in Saint Tropez, you’ll often find that some of the neighbouring marinas offer a cheaper and more low-key experience (with the same great access to the stunning beaches and medieval villages of Provence).

Weekly Charters Day Charters Fishing Charters

The Port de Saint Tropez runs right along the cobbled water-front of this chic town, so you can step right off your boat and into the cool sophistication of Hotel de Paris or sip a glass of rose in one of the other pavement cafes . Or perhaps you’d like to have a Provencal lunch in a shady restaurant courtyard beneath the grape vines, followed by an afternoon spent shopping in the town’s glamorous boutiques .

Whatever floats your boat, Saint Tropez is a very special and memorable place to berth your vessel. It can also be quite a pricey one, with berth rates ranging between 27 euro per night for a 5m boat, to 2,894 euro for a 70m boat to come into port for a night.

As you might imagine, it can be tough finding a berth in Saint Tropez in summer. There’s just one marina in Saint Tropez proper, but if you can’t nab a spot there are some good marinas nearby, such as the well-protected Cogolin marina, Port Grimaud (‘the Venice of Provence’) and the relaxed seaside town of Cavalaire-sur-Mer.

Book My Berth

Moorings & marinas

Port de Saint Tropez The most glittering of marinas, Port de Saint Tropez , is relatively small, with 734 berths for yachts up to 50 metres in length, and a maximum draft of 6 metres. This is the only marina in Saint Tropez proper and berths are extremely sought after. The celebrity clientele ensures that the port’s level of service is high and that there are all the necessary amenities, from a dedicated business area, concierge or ‘groom’ service, WiFi subscription, fuel dock, free waste water pump-out and electricity etc. Saint-Tropez harbour also has two terraces on the Jean Réveille Pier which are available for hire for special events.

There is a sailing club in the port called the Societe de Nautique de Saint Tropez . Saint Tropez is the venue of 17 sailing events throughout the year, of which 6 are major regattas. In late September/early October, the Port de Saint Tropez hosts the last classic sailing regatta of the season, Les Voiles de Saint Tropez , transforming this already desperately pretty marina into a magnificent display of old wooden yachts, which race across the bay in the daytime under billowing cream sails before returning to port to a huge party at night. It’s quite a spectacle.

You can book your Saint Tropez berth online. The website also has an English version.

Marina de Port Grimaud Marina de Port Grimaud is a quite extraordinary marina on the Gulf of Saint Tropez, with over 2000 berths over three marinas connected by a quite charming network of canals, bridges and man-made islands. Often likened to Venice for its canal layout, this port was designed in 1967 by an architect who decided he wanted to build a marina and Provencal village on seaside canals in the South. While most of the berths are privately owned, several hundred are reserved for casual stays. The marinas can admit yachts up to 30 metres, but the majority of berths are for small vessels. You’ll find lots of shops, restaurants and services in the village- or you can just grab an ice-cream from a waterfront parlour and wander the network of canals. If you’re looking to explore the area, the old town of Grimaud is a perched village a few kilometres inland, with ancient links to the famous Grimaldi family- now the ruling family of Monaco. Port Grimaud is seven kilometres from Saint Tropez.

Marines de Cogolin Like Port Grimaud, the Marines de Cogolin is the sea port of a perched village a few kilometres inland. Another new port built to take advantage of the burgeoning leisure yacht industry, Cogolin is a very large port, with capacity for 1600 boats with a maximum length of 50 metres. The average depth is 4 metres. The marina is set over three large basins, and its position at the mouth of an inlet makes this a very sheltered marina during bad weather spells. The marina has a shipyard, chandlery, Laundromat, wifi, boat rentals, and all the usual services.

The complex also has shops, restaurants and services surrounding the marina, as well as a sailing school, swimming pool, diving school and tennis courts.

Port de Plaisance de Cavalaire Cavalaire is a relaxed and modern seaside town near Saint Tropez, but with none of its bling. With lots of great beaches, affordable restaurants and friendly locals, this is as far as you can get from Saint Tropez while still being close by. The Port de Plaisance de Cavalaire has 570 places over 5 pontoons and a main quay, catering to vessels up to 20m and with a 6m draft. There are basic services such as water and electricity on the dock, toilets and showers, and 24/7 marina security.

Port de Sainte Maxime This smaller port near Saint Tropez has 375 berths, catering to vessels up to 25m long. Port de Sainte Maxime has basic services such as electricity, water and a fuel dock, this is another low-key marina in a town with a family friendly vibe.

Discovering hidden ports in the West Mediterranean

Published 17 September 2024

Monaco, Saint-Tropez, Palma, Porto  Cervo  – these are all failsafe ports-of-call for summer  yacht  cruising. But if you want to skip the crowds,  it’s  worth  cruising away from the well beaten path and exploring some of the more  secluded coves and historic  harbours  that  also  dot the  Western Mediterranean  coastline. From volcanic Italian outcrops to  secluded  Maltese  coves , here are  six  alternative  yacht destinations  worth knowing about.

Why seek out the West Mediterranean’s hidden ports?

The port-of-call  you choose   can significantly impact  your  overall cruising experience –  and  whether you crave  tranquillity  or simply seek a safe haven  away from the crowds of tourists , berthing or taking the tender  in to an alternative, lesser-known marina offers  a convenient  way to access the  lesser known  shoreside offerings. And,  with more options available  for eating and drinking  t han  you might have  in  the usual hot spots,  you can relax. After all,  relaxation is  what yachting is all about .

Mgarr Marina, Gozo

Gozo, Malta

As an established superyacht hub in the Mediterranean,  Malta  is an ideal gateway to the  southern  Mediterranean’s most popular cruising grounds, but for those looking to explore Malta  herself  and her sister islands of  Gozo  and Comino, there  are  plenty  of attractions  located  more locally  around the archipelago . 300-plus days of sunshine  per year , deep natural harbours, picturesque fishing villages and secluded bays are all a given, while ashore the  islands offer three UNESCO sites, Michelin-star restaurants, and extensive superyacht facilities.

Cruising around the island of Malta, for example, from Marsaxlokk to Golden Bay and  Gnejna  in the south, to  Mellieha ,  Selmum  and St Paul’s Bay in the north, and you will find  genuinely  beautiful anchoring spots  all around the island . The UNESCO World Heritage city of  the Maltese capital  Valletta is home to the island’s main marina, Marina Di Valletta, but for those looking for an alternative  to Valletta   then  Gozo’s   Mgarr  Marina  still  offers berths for superyachts of up to 85m (278ft) in length  and can provide visiting yachts   with an  ideal launchpad for exploring the rugged island which is  also  home to some of the best dive sites in the Mediterranean.

Porto Cristo,  Mallorca

Mallorca port

The  golden  Spanish isles of the Balearics have evolved to be among the Mediterranean’s most glamorous cruising grounds, attracting the yachting crowd to enjoy the long hours of sunshine and world-class hip hangouts. The most popular island of  Mallorca  is busy year-round, but even during the peak summer months you can  still  find secluded coves and pretty bays, including the picturesque fishing village of Porto Cristo. Located to the east of the island, it takes advantage of its position at the end of a sheltered bay and is blessed with clear waters that lap the blue flag ged  sandy beach. The port itself houses the famous Caves of  Drach , family-run restaurants and a Yacht Club, however the berths are too small for superyachts but  a great place  to tender ashore .

Vernazza Harbour, Cinque Terre, Italy

Panoramic view of colorful Vernazza village in Cinque Terre

The Italian Riviera is best known for its dramatic cliffs and charming seaside towns, including the tiny horseshoe bay of Portofino, but further along this vertiginous coastline the Cinque Terre (five lands) offers the waterborne a string of five little fishing villages: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore.

The entire Cinque Terre is a UNESCO World Heritage site and protected marine area, and boasts footpaths that take walkers through tiny settlements, churches and old castles. Anchor in Vernazza Harbour, the area's only natural harbour, and tender ashore to dine on fresh seafood at one of the alfresco restaurants facing the water’s edge.

Sète Marina, France

Pont du Gard

With its well-connected waterways and easy access to the popular cruising grounds of the Mediterannean and beyond, Sète is located halfway between Barcelona and the French Riviera. A convenient stopover to and from the Côte d’Azur for yachts cruising from mainland Spain or the Balearics, the town is a cultural haven offering local art galleries and museums, and is also well-known for its gastronomic scene.

The surrounding area is home to fine sandy beaches, national parks and ancient Roman attractions such as Pont du Gard. The marina itself offers berthing for yachts of up to 180m (590ft) in length, with provisioning and service facilities and a clubhouse for yachts and their crew.

Port Grimaud, France

For those looking to enjoy the infectious joie de vivre of Saint-Tropez and the golden stretch of Pampelonne Beach without having to battle with the traffic jams of yachts in the Port of Saint-Tropez, then nearby Port Grimaud is ideally located. Tucked into the opposite corner of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, the port has a relaxed, provençal atmosphere with its pastel coloured fishermen’s houses, church square, and plethora of restaurants and cafes. Catering for smaller yachts, this might be one to tender ashore to if your yacht is over 24m (78ft) in length.

Porto Olbia, Sardinia

Porto Cervo Sardinia

One of Italy’s most glamorous places to spend the summer, the coastline of Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda is where you will find exclusive restaurants, stunning beaches and a wide variety of landscapes. In high season, the long favoured Porto Cervo is both beautiful and very crowded, and finding a berth can be difficult. The nearby resort harbour of Porto Rotondo is just 20 minutes cruise away and offers an alternative location to berth or anchor.

Surrounded by charming bays, the crescent bay is home to beautiful beaches and an exclusive (and very sheltered) marina with high-end facilities for yachts of up to 75m (246ft) in length. Spend time beachside or explore the small fishing village with its boutiques and contemporary art galleries. Early evening is the best time to stroll around the stylish port with its trendy bars and restaurants and small piazzas.

Events in the West Mediterranean

From tennis championships to polo, the  iconic   Monaco Grand Prix and  a variety of  yachting regattas, the West Mediterranean plays host to all manner of major sporting events. It's also where you will find the Hollywood elite gracing the shores of Cannes  at the  world  famous  Cannes Film  Festival, or  wearing their most glamorous gowns  and tuxedos  to  attend  the Red Cross Ball in Monaco. Some events are even  held  portside, allowing you to view the action from the comfort of the decks of your yacht.

The in augu ral show of the Mediterranean cruising season, the  Palma International Boat Show  is hosted on the pretty island of Mallorca. The perfect place to view the latest  cutting-edge  water toys and  a variety of  superyachts, the latter of which can be viewed at the Palma Superyacht Village, the show is  located  right by the island’s capital with all its restaurants and bars, and historic city centre.  Sailing yachts are a particular speciality of this yacht show.

Monaco Rose Ball

Opening Monaco’s ‘season’ every year in the spring, the Rose Ball is the most glamorous invite on the  P rincipality’s social calendar. Hosted by the Monegasque royal family since 1954, this annual high-society charity gala draws  on  an impressive guest list that includes both royals and A-list celebrities.

Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, Monaco

Tennis

The annual  Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters  is a small tournament which  welcomes world class players to compete in the first clay court tournament of the year , and is used by many players as a  warm up  for the French Open . Hosted each spring, the event is one of the oldest and most prestigious on the circuit, welcoming the biggest names from international tennis to play at the  Monte Carlo Country Club.

Unlike the Grand Slam tournaments where the crowds are huge  and the players kept very separate from the fans ,  at Monte Carlo  the biggest names in the world of tennis will  literally walk  past you on their way to the courts from the changing rooms. For tennis fans this makes it an unmissable event, with the opportunity to see  even  the top 10 international male players close-up as they compete for the ATP World Tour Title –  previous  players have included legendary names including Sampras, Agassi,  Federer  and Nadal.

Even if you are not particularly a tennis fan, it's  still  worth stepping ashore just to enjoy the charged atmosphere on the courts that heats up over the nine days of play.

Cannes Film Festival

Cannes Film Festival

The star of the Côte d’Azur, Cannes welcomes the world’s premier film festival to its shores each Spring along with the biggest stars in the film world. Created to draw attention and raise the profile of  competing  films, the  Cannes Film Festival  promotes and rewards the  world’s  most  cutting-edge  films throughout the 12-day festival.  While the main screenings are open only to accredited film professionals, directors, actors, and producers, public beach screenings are also held  for the  general public  every night  on the beach. The hottest invites are, of course, to the parties on board the most exclusive superyachts either berthed in the Old Port or anchored out in the bay.

Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez

Saint-Tropez

One of the largest gatherings of classic and modern sailing yachts worldwide,  Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez  sees a legendary fleet of awe-inspiring classics and a fleet of modern sailing yachts enjoy racing and fun in the Bay of Saint-Tropez.  The sight of hundreds of modern and classic sails filling up the bay is genuinely spectacular and the atmosphere in port is also truly incredible – certainly one not to be missed by any yachting afficionado , and  a great experience  for anyone .

See inside the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection's second vessel, Ilma

Portrait of Nathan Diller

  • The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection's second ship, Ilma, departed on its maiden voyage Monday.
  • The 790-foot-long Ilma is larger than its predecessor Evrima, which launched in 2022.
  • The ship will operate cruises in the Mediterranean, Caribbean and Northern Europe ranging from three to 13 nights.

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection is growing.

The luxury brand’s second ship, Ilma, departed on its maiden voyage Monday. The vessel, which will spend its inaugural season sailing the Mediterranean, was fittingly named for the Maltese word for water.

The 790-foot-long Ilma is larger than 624-foot predecessor Evrima, which launched in 2022 .

“It is with immense pride and excitement that we welcome Ilma to our growing fleet,” executive chairman and CEO Jim Murren said in a news release. “Since Evrima’s debut, we have been steadfast in our pursuit of excellence at sea. The addition of Ilma signifies a continuation of our mission to deliver legendary service and unparalleled enjoyment to our guests.”

Here’s what to expect.

Where does Ilma sail?

Along with the Mediterranean, the 448-guest ship will operate cruises in the Caribbean and Northern Europe ranging from three to 13 nights. The ship’s week-long maiden voyage from Monte Carlo, Monaco, to Rome, Italy, includes stops in Saint-Tropez, France; Bastia on the island of Corsica; and Livorno in Tuscany.

What can passengers expect on board?

For a relatively small vessel, Ilma has a robust culinary program. There are five dining venues, seven bars and a wine vault.

Two of the eateries were crafted by chefs from Michelin-starred restaurants. Modern Italian fine dining concept Seta su Ilma by Chef Fabio Trabocchi serves seasonal tasting menus paired with wines – largely Italian reds and whites. The beach club-inspired Beach House offers Pan-Latin dishes, craft beer, an “elevated tequila selection” and more, according to a separate news release , with a menu developed with Chef Michael Mina.

Another space, The Living Room, serves coffee and pastries in the morning, and cocktails, Champagne and wines later in the day, which guests can enjoy while listening to live music.

There are also two pools, including an infinity pool at the vessel’s aft, a spa and fitness studio. Passengers can find direct access to the water for activities like snorkeling and kayaking at the ship’s Marina, or grab a drink at the nearby Marina Terrace.

Each of Ilma’s 224 suites have private terraces, as well.

Floating resorts vs yacht-like vessels: How to pick between big and small cruise ships

How much do cruises on Ilma cost?

Prices vary depending on the sailing date, suite category and other factors, but starting prices for 2024 sailings currently range from $5,200 to $14,900 per person based on double occupancy.

The fare includes multiple dining venues, Wi-Fi, gratuities and more.

The Youth America's Cup will see 12 teams competing in Barcelona in AC40 foiling monohulls to claim the Youth America's Cup Trophy

geissens yacht saint tropez

The 2024 Youth America’s Cup is set to get underway today Tuesday 17 September 2024 in Barcelona. Sponsored by UniCredit, the event will bring together the best young sailors from around the globe to compete in a knock out series to crown the Youth America’s Cup champion.

The inaugural Red Bull Youth America’s Cup was introduced in San Francisco and the winners of that regatta are now leading names in sailing.

Peter Burling , today the skipper of the Defender of the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup , skippered the ‘NZL Sailing Team with Emirates Team New Zealand’ that featured stellar names like Blair Tuke, Andy Maloney and Sam Meech who are all involved with Emirates Team New Zealand in 2024.

Other names in that regatta, which was then held in non-foiling AC45 catamarans, include Jason Saunders (now with Orient Express Racing Team ), Lucien Cujean and Jason Waterhouse (both now with Alinghi Red Bull Racing ).

The Land Rover BAR team were crowned 2017 Red Bull Youth America’s Cup Champions last time the event took place

Following the success of that inaugural regatta, the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup returned in 2017 in the crystal waters of Bermuda with the upgraded AC45F foiling catamaran and this time it was the British ‘GBR Land Rover BAR Academy’ team that lifted the trophy. Onboard was Neil Hunter, the powerhouse cyclor who was quickly snapped up by the senior team and is now a key member of the INEOS Britannia squad.

The Youth America’s Cup did not take place during the 2021 America’s Cup in Auckland, but has been reintroduced for this latest edition of the event.

British Women’s and Youth America’s Cup squads unveiled

The British team is seeking to win the first ever Women’s America’s Cup. It will also be aiming to defend…

The UniCredit Youth America’s Cup, is scheduled from September 17 to 26, 2024 and is open to sailors aged 18 to 25, it promises to showcase the talents of young athletes from 12 countries, all vying for top honours in foiling yacht racing.

The event will feature both fleet racing and match-racing formats, allowing teams to test their mettle in the different racing tyles. Fleet races will be the order of the day initially  while match-races will see two boats go head-to-head in a knockout format.

The Youth America’s Cup Venue

The races will be held at the Port Olímpic in Barcelona, a prime waterfront location that has undergone significant renovation in recent years. Built for the 1992 Olympic Games, the port is now a hub of Barcelona’s maritime culture and is the area in which the Louis Vuitton Cup and America’s Cup are taking place. Fans will have an incredible opportunity to view the races close up from the waterfront and beaches, adding a unique level of engagement to the event.

The Boats: AC40

The Youth America’s Cup will take place in the AC40 a one-design foiling monohull that has been used by America’s Cup teams for training, development and America’s Cup preliminary regattas.

The purchase of one AC40 was a prerequisite to entry into the 37th America’s Cup with the boats being used for an America’s Cup preliminary series (consisting of two events in the run up to the Cup itself), and also the reintroduced Youth America’s Cup.

Both the Youth AC and Preliminary Events (previously called the America’s Cup World Series) concept have been a feature of past America’s Cups, but both were dropped in the run-up to the 36th America’s Cup in Auckland.

The AC40 is designed to behave in a similar way to the America’s Cup boats , the AC75 . They have two large, weighted foils on either side of the boat but no traditional keel.

The boats are designed to foil on one foil only with the windward foil raised out of the water to reduce drag and provide increased righting moment.

With only four crew members onboard the AC40 there is a reliance on a variety of automated systems, including a battery powered system replacing the need for grinders, and automated controls to adjust foiling height and self-tacking headsails.

In terms of the rig, the AC40 again mimics the AC75s and features the same D-shaped mast on which two sail skins will be hoisted to create a soft wingsail, offering plenty of control in a sail plan that can be easily raised and lowered from onboard.

Youth America’s Cup Format

The competition kicked off with five days of training from September 10 to 16, giving the teams a chance to familiarise themselves with the AC40s. The race series begins with the Qualification Series from September 17 to 21, where the teams are split into two groups. The top three teams from each group will progress to the Final Series on September 22, followed by the Match-Race Final on September 26.

The format challenges the sailors in both fleet and match-racing, testing their versatility and adaptability across multiple racing styles.

Youth America’s Cup teams

Twelve teams from around the world, will compete for the trophy.
