How Much Do Superyachts Cost?

just 4 yacht owner

When it comes to superyachts, the sky is the limit when it comes to cost.

These luxury vessels come with hefty price tags that can range from anywhere between $30 million to over $400 million.

So, if youre in the market for a superyacht, youre looking at an investment that could easily break the bank.

The cost of a superyacht is driven by a variety of factors, including size, amenities, and customization.

Generally, the larger the yacht, the more expensive it will be.

Superyachts typically range in size from 100 feet to over 200 feet, and they can be as wide as 40 feet.

The bigger the yacht, the more luxurious features and amenities it will have.

Amenities also play a significant role in the cost of a superyacht.

While some owners prefer to keep their yachts out of the public eye, others have made headlines with their extensive amenities.

From swimming pools and helicopter pads to on-board cinemas and spas, the sky is the limit when it comes to customizing a superyacht.

The more amenities a superyacht has, the more expensive it will be.

Finally, customization is another major factor that will drive up the cost of a superyacht.

Many luxury vessels have custom-designed interiors that are tailored to the owners tastes.

From custom furniture and artwork to lighting and audio systems, the cost of a superyacht can quickly escalate depending on the level of customization.

In short, the cost of a superyacht can vary widely depending on its size, amenities, and customization.

While some may be able to get away with spending a few million dollars, others may end up spending hundreds of millions of dollars on their dream yacht.

No matter what your budget is, its important to do your research and find out exactly what youre getting for your money before signing on the dotted line.

Keeping Superyachts Out of the Public Eye

When it comes to owning a superyacht, some owners prefer to keep their vessels out of the public eye.

Understandably, these individuals are concerned with privacy and discretion, and therefore tend to take measures to ensure their yachts are not visible to outsiders.

For instance, some superyacht owners opt to keep their vessels in private marinas, away from the public areas of larger ports.

Additionally, some yacht owners may choose to hire security guards to patrol and protect their vessels while they are moored or sailing.

In addition to physical security, some superyacht owners also use technology to keep their vessels out of the public eye.

For example, a yacht owner may choose to install a satellite-based communications system that allows them to keep their vessel completely off-radar.

This system works by bouncing signals off satellites rather than transmitting them, making it virtually impossible for anyone to track the yachts movements.

Finally, some superyacht owners also choose to limit the number of people who have access to their vessels.

For instance, the owner may only allow family members and close friends to board the yacht.

Additionally, the owner may choose to employ a limited number of staff to help maintain the vessel and keep it running smoothly.

These individuals may be required to sign non-disclosure agreements to ensure they do not disclose any information about the yacht or its owner.

Overall, while some superyacht owners may choose to keep their vessels out of the public eye, there are still plenty of other ways to show off the opulence associated with owning a superyacht.

From swimming pools and helicopter pads to on-board cinemas and spas, there are many luxurious amenities that can make a superyacht the envy of any jet setter.

Final Thoughts

Superyachts are a symbol of luxury and status, and the list of yacht owners reads like a who’s who of billionaires.

From the Emir of Qatar’s world-record breaking $400 million yacht to Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s vessel with a helicopter pad and on-board spa, the amenities of these luxury vessels are truly stunning.

With prices ranging from $30 million to over $400 million, owning a superyacht is an expensive endeavor.

Who was onboard tech mogul Mike Lynch's Bayesian yacht?

Topic: Disasters, Accidents and Emergency Incidents

Six people are missing, including a man dubbed the British Bill Gates, after a luxury yacht sank off the Sicilian coast.

British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch — freshly acquitted from a decade-long trial — had invited his work colleagues aboard a trip through the Mediterranean coast when a freak storm saw the yacht sink within moments.

Fifteen people escaped from the sinking vessel. The search for the missing continues.

Here's what we know so far:

What happened?

The Italian coastguard said the yacht — the Bayesian — was anchored off the shore of port city Porticello, near the Sicilian capital Palermo, when it was hit by bad weather sometime after 4am on Monday, local time.

Eyewitnesses said it vanished quickly beneath the waves shortly before dawn.

Managers of the sailing vessel Bayesian, Camper & Nicholsons, confirmed to the ABC that the Bayesian encountered severe weather and subsequently sank.

"Our priority is assisting with the ongoing search and providing all necessary support to the rescued passengers and crew," they said.

"The wind was very strong. Bad weather was expected, but not of this magnitude," a coastguard official told Reuters.

Sicily's civil protection agency head, Salvo Cocina, said a waterspout — a tornado over the water — could have struck the yacht.

"They were in the wrong place at the wrong time," Mr Cocina added.

Storms and heavy rainfall had swept down Italy in recent days after weeks of scorching heat, lifting the temperature of the Mediterranean Sea to record levels and raising the risk of extreme weather conditions, experts told Reuters.

"The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius, which is almost 3 degrees more than normal. This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms," meteorologist Luca Mercalli said.

Captain Karsten Borner of the Sir Robert Baden Powell vessel told journalists he noticed the Bayesian nearby during the storm, but after it calmed he saw a red flare and realised the ship had simply disappeared.

Mr Borner said he and a crew member boarded their tender and found a lifeboat with 15 people, some of them injured, who they then took aboard and alerted the coast guard.

Search crews, including helicopters and divers, are continuing to search the wreckage, lying at a depth of 49 metres.

Specialist divers reached the ship on Monday but access was limited due to objects in the way, the fire brigade said.

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment.

The Foreign Commonwealth and Development office said it was "providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families".

Sicilian prosecutors have also opened an investigation into the event.

Who is missing?

A collage of three men

Lawyer Chris Morvillo (left), entrepreneur Mike Lynch, and Morgan Stanley chairman Jonathan Bloomer are among the missing.

There were 12 passengers and 10 crew members aboard the yacht.

Mr Cocina said the crew and passengers hailed from a variety of countries, including Britain, the United States, Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain.

Of the 22, one man is confirmed dead and another six people are still missing.

They are believed to be inside the hull, fire rescue spokesperson Luca Cari said.

Fabio Cefalù, a fisherman who said he responded to a flare from the vessel but found it sunk, said he stayed at the site for three hours without finding anyone.

"I think they are inside, all the missing people," he said.

Rescue teams recovered the body of the yacht's onboard chef on Monday, identified as Antiguan citizen Ricardo Thomas.

The still missing people include:

  • Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah
  • Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of global financial services company Morgan Stanley International
  • Chris Morvillo , a lawyer at the British multinational law firm Clifford Chance. He worked on Mr Lynch's lawsuit against Hewlett-Packard
  • The identities of the remaining two missing are still unconfirmed

Who was rescued?

Fifteen people escaped from the sinking ship.

Eight have been hospitalised and others were taken to a nearby hotel.

Among those rescued were:

  • Mr Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, who was the owner of the yacht
  • Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter, Sofia. Ms Golunski is a partner at Mr Lynch's firm, Invoke Capital. She says she momentarily lost hold of Sofia in the water but managed to hold her up above the waves until the lifeboat was inflated
  • Ms Golunski's husband James Emslie
  • New Zealand captain of the yacht James Catfield. He told Italian newspaper La Repubblica the crew didn't see the storm coming
  • A lone Dutch citizen was identified by the Dutch foreign ministry as being rescued, but was not identified

Who is Mike Lynch?

Mr Lynch, once hailed as Britain’s king of technology, was recently freed from a Silicon Valley lawsuit that tarnished his legacy.

The 59-year-old Cambridge-educated mathematician created Autonomy , a search engine that could pore through emails and other internal business documents to help companies find vital information more quickly.

He received the OBE for his innovation in 2006.

He then sold the software to Hewlett-Packard (HP) for $US11 billion ($16 billion) in 2011, with Mr Lynch personally netting $US800 million.

HP valued Autonomy at $US46 billion ($68 billion) in the months leading up to the deal.

But the deal quickly turned sour after he was accused of forging the software's financial records to make the sale.

As part of a decades-long legal battle against HP, Mr Lynch was extradited to the UK on criminal fraud charges.

He steadfastly denied any wrongdoing, asserting that he was being made a scapegoat for HP's own bungling.

He was eventually cleared of all charges in June this year.

Although he avoided a possible prison sentence, Lynch still faced a bill from a civil case in London that HP mostly won during 2022. Damages haven't been determined in that case, but HP is seeking $US4 billion.

Following the San Francisco trial, Mr Lynch said he would return to the UK and do what he loved most: "[being with] my family and innovating in my field."

The holiday appeared to be something of a celebration after Mr Lynch's acquittal, with guests including some of the people who had stood by Lynch throughout the ordeal.

Italy Boaters Missing

In a separate act of tragedy, Mr Lynch's co-defendant in the trial, Stephen Chamberlain, died on Monday, after a road accident left him critically injured.

Mr Chamberlain — Autonomy's former vice-president of finance alongside Mr Lynch — was hit by a car in Cambridgeshire on Saturday morning and had been placed on life support.

What is the Bayesian?

The luxury yacht is 56m long sailboat, with a 75m mast labelled as the tallest aluminium mast in the world.

It was previously named Salute when it flew under a Dutch flag.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites and a crew of 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. It was last refitted in 2020.

Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $AU 321,000) a week.

Two boats in the sea

This picture taken on Sunday shows the Bayesian (left) and the Duch sailboat Sir Robert Baden Powell anchored off the coast line.   ( AP: Fabio La Bianca/Baia Santa Nicolicchia )

The ship also won a string of awards for its design.

Ms Golunski said the yacht had travelled through the Aeolian Islands, Milazzo and Cefalù before sinking.

It is likely the yacht's name would resonate with Mr Lynch because his PhD thesis and the software that made his fortune was based on Bayesian theory.

A striking display of personal wealth is turning heads on Toronto's waterfront, with an American billionaire's luxury superyacht currently moored at Harbourfront.

The personal yacht of U.S. billionaire Jay Schottenstein, who serves as chairman and CEO of Schottenstein Stores Corporation, American Eagle Outfitters and American Signature, has been spotted on the waterfront.

Schottenstein, with an estimated net worth of at least $1.5 billion USD and a family net worth of approximately $2.8 billion USD, is the owner of a 200-foot luxury superyacht called Just J's, which comes with an outlandish list of features few of us normies could dream of.

The yacht's name is a play on the Schottenstein family's naming convention, where all members have names beginning with the letter 'J.' Five bodies found inside superyacht that sank off Sicily

PORTICELLO, Sicily — Divers recovered four bodies Wednesday from inside a superyacht that sank in a sudden storm off Sicily , Salvatore Cocina, director of the island's Civil Protection Agency, confirmed to NBC News.

Cocina later confirmed to Sky News that a fifth body had been found and was being brought to shore. One passenger remains missing.

The identities of the bodies were not immediately released. Their recovery follows a dayslong search in the deep waters off Italy where British tech tycoon Mike Lynch  and several others were believed to be trapped in the hull. Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived.

The rest had been missing since early Monday, when the Bayesian was caught in the storm anchored off the coast of Porticello, a village near the Sicilian capital city, Palermo.

The body of the ship’s cook, identified as Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian Antiguan national, was recovered Monday.

On Wednesday, NBC News witnessed what appeared to be at least three body bags being lifted from fire department boats after they pulled into port at Porticello. It was unclear whose bodies they were. Some were later transferred to ambulances and driven away from the dock.

Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda, are also missing.

Bayesian yacht accident in Sicily

The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was among the survivors rescued by a nearby vessel after they got into a lifeboat.

Built by the Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered yacht could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist boating sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.

Regularly described in U.K. media as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” Lynch was  acquitted of fraud by a San Francisco jury this year, stemming from the sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion in 2011.

The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who brought Bloomer, who testified in his defense, and Morvillo, one of his U.S. lawyers, on the trip.

Lynch's co-defendant Stephen Chamberlain was not aboard the Bayesian, but in what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a  car struck and killed  him Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.

Claudio Lavanga and Claudia Rizzo reported from Porticello. Henry Austin reported from London.

Claudio Lavanga is Rome-based foreign correspondent for NBC News.

Claudia Rizzo is an Italy based journalist.

The captain of the superyacht that sank off the coast of Italy last week during severe weather, killing seven, is under probe by Italian prosecutors.

James Cutfield, 51, of New Zealand, is under investigation on suspicion of manslaughter and culpable shipwreck, Italian media reported Monday.

He and 15 others survived the sinking of the Bayesian. British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, his daughter Hannah and five others died.

"The Bayesian was built to go to sea in any weather," Franco Romani, a nautical architect who was part of the team that designed the yacht, told daily La Stampa in an interview published on Monday. He added that the yacht could have taken on water from a left open side hatch.

Prosecutors said the event was "extremely rapid" and could have been a "downburst" – a localized, powerful wind that descends from a thunderstorm and spreads out rapidly upon hitting the ground.

Similar to U.S. law, being investigated does not imply guilt nor that formal charges will be filed against Cutfield.

On Saturday, chief prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio not only confirmed an investigation, but said his team will also consider each possible element of responsibility, including those of the captain, the crew, individuals in charge of supervision and the yacht’s manufacturer.

MORGAN STANLEY INTERNATIONAL CHAIRMAN, WIFE AND 4 OTHERS STILL MISSING AFTER LUXURY YACHT SINKS OFF SICILY

The Bayesian was a 184-foot British-flagged luxury yacht deemed "unsinkable" by its manufacturer, Italian shipyard Perini Navi.

Its crew survived the sinking, minus the chef. Six passengers were trapped in the hull.

Fox News Digital spoke with eSysman of the YouTube channel eSysman SuperYachts , to find out what could have gone wrong with the vessel.

"Obviously, any voyage plan will take into account the weather. Wind, wave sizes, and frequencies of the waves will be studied and precise prediction of weather has improved over the years, but it’s still not 100%," the host said, noting that it is ultimately the captain who is responsible for the vessel.

Fox News' Bradford Betz, Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

It would take the sale of approximately 5.75 million HP ink cartridges to fund the $92 million purchase of superyacht Secret , currently listed for sale with Burgess. The ink cartridges were one of Walmart’s top-selling products in 2021, and might well have contributed to a successful year of yachting for Secret ’s owner, Walmart heiress and philanthropist Nancy Walton Laurie.

As the largest yacht on display at last month’s MYBA Charter Show in Barcelona, and one of three yachts reportedly owned by Laurie, the 271-foot beauty built by Abeking & Rasmussen in 2013 provides some insight into the family’s tastes and preferences.

The main salon’s bold color scheme by interior designer Jim Harris mixes pillar-box red sofas and carpets with ornate gold wall art. It’s a brave step change from the neutral beige and gray tones often selected by owners, typically with resale value in mind.

The designers also moved the formal dining room to the upper deck, leaving a large entertaining space to watch sports and socialize. A monochrome marble bar with a glass backdrop, views to the main deck aft and an onboard mixologist all help to set the tone. When it comes onboard socializing, Secret pulls no punches.

Guests arrive via the lower deck beach club or the main deck side entrance, where luggage can be ushered into the color-coded lower deck guest cabins. There are some unusual perks to being a guest aboard Secret . Heated bathroom floors feature across all guest suites, while guest mattresses are singles that zip together into doubles for greater flexibility.

The upper-deck, full-beam master suite, named Chanel to reflect the black-and-champagne silk color scheme, is highly personalized. Separate his and her en suites have their own amenities: Hers has a full-sized bath, and his has higher countertops to accommodate former basketball player and owner Bill Laurie’s 6’ 4” height. Both have steam showers. The private office is considerably smaller than the VIP office to accommodate the owner’s request for an oversized walk-in wardrobe.

Secret is a boat owned by the Walton family of Walmart

The most surprising area on board is the “Valentina” main deck VIP guest suite, named after the Valentina-inspired white spiked headboard. The master has sea views and a private terrace, but the full-beam VIP, decorated and claimed by Laurie’s adult daughter when her family is on board, is arguably the superior option. It shares the same footprint as the master but enjoys a greater attention to detail. The ensuite, decorated in black-and-white stripes, has two day heads—one with bidet—and a central wet room fitted with a shower and full-sized bathtub.

The monochrome décor is echoed throughout the yacht, from the upper-deck sky lounge to the guest hallways. In the 12-person cinema, red Porsche leather armchairs are mirrored in the leather ceiling panels. The dedicated treatment room enjoys an onboard beautician and masseuse who specializes in hot Swedish massage.

A glass elevator connects the lower deck to the bridge deck, where an indoor glass-fronted gym and outdoor pool are located. For sundown soaks, the sun deck Jacuzzi ticks the box.

Last refitted in 2018, the yacht started out life at 256 feet, with an additional 16 feet added to accommodate the owner’s choice of an aft deck dining table. It’s the preferred space to enjoy buffet-style breakfasts, protected from view by high bulwarks. Further al fresco dining for 14 people is available on the lower deck beach club, where a “dining under the stars” themed evening sees guests enjoy meals at the water’s edge beneath a blanket of twinkling LEDs and real constellations above.

For families and guests with a competitive spirit, the beach club, equipped with changing rooms and rain showers, is the center of watersports action. A serious collection of toys, including kneeboards, flyboards, trampolines and towables are matched by an inflatable assault course erected by the crew for “Sports Olympics.” The addition of a female water-sports instructor has proven popular with charter guests.  When the weather’s bad, the karaoke system comes to the rescue.

It’s no secret that smaller yachts in the 190-foot size range are proving more popular on the global charter market at present, preferred for their ability to access smaller ports and anchor close to shore. But Secret pulls out all the stops for guests looking to enjoy time aboard a yacht maxed out with amenities and personality, provided in a covert setting. All in all, definitely worth the printer cartridges.

10 of the most impressive superyachts owned by billionaires

From a sailing yacht owned by a russian billionaire industrialist to the luxury launch of the patek philippe ceo, here are the best billionaire-owned boats on the water….

Words: Jonathan Wells

There’s something about billionaires and big boats . Whether they’re superyachts or megayachts, men with money love to splash out on these sizeable sea-going giants. And that all began in 1954 — with the big dreams of Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis.

Onassis, keen to keep his luxury lifestyle afloat when at sea, bought Canadian anti-submarine frigate HMCS Stormont after World War II. He spent millions turning it into an opulent super yacht, named it after his daughter — and the Christina O kicked off a trend among tycoons. To this day, the world’s richest men remain locked in an arms race to build the biggest, fastest, most impressive superyacht of all. Here are 10 of our favourites…

Codecasa-Double-Down-Super-yacht

On Board with superyacht owner and businessman John Rosatti

After he sold his last yacht, the 49.37 metre Christensen Remember When , John Rosatti was convinced that he was done with yachting. Forever. Why? “I was working on [his retaurant chain] BurgerFi and working on my car dealerships. Every time I came on the boat, I worked on my computer, had a business meeting and I did not enjoy the boat.” The man who once owned a yacht called Nice N’ Easy works constantly. “People think that I just live on a boat and I have a great life. I do have a great life but in my mind and in my business I work 24/7. I wake at night thinking about my business. Building things is my life.”

It’s been that way since he was a kid growing up in Brooklyn, New York. His parents worked hard for a living and, at the age of 13, he was pitching in to help. He tinkered with cars and with his grandfather’s 7.9 metre fishing boat. By his mid-20s he had his own business, a body shop. And the rest, well, is business history. A father of three grown-up children, he says he’d love to pass the baton to the next generation and his son, Adam, and his daughter, Angela, already work in the car and restaurant businesses.

What keeps him busy these days, aside from eight car dealerships in New York and two fine-dining Italian restaurants called Vic & Angelo’s and gastropub The Office in South Florida, is the rapidly expanding fast food franchise BurgerFi. One of the most popular items at The Office is an $18 burger and fries, so he thought he could do well with a moderately priced and tasty burger. It seems he was right. Started a little over five years ago, the hamburger chain is now worldwide. “Only two per cent of franchises ever make it to 100,” he says. “We have 83 open and over 200 sold.”

Recent investors include Jamie Wood, son of Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones, who snapped up 10 locations for the UK. Other locations outside the US include Mexico and Panama. Italy, birthplace of Rosatti’s grandparents, is still on the to-do list. The burger chain is growing as a healthy, fresh and all-natural option in a crowded market of cheap meat sandwiches. “It’s made fresh daily. People are being more healthy now,” says Rosatti. A fit 72 year old himself, he walks five miles every day. Still, that regimen of work and fitness, his two private jets, fleet of cars and 160mph MTI catamaran did not quite fulfil him. He was without a yacht for a few months, having found a buyer for Remember When , who kept the yacht’s crew and captain. “At first I was happy,” he says, “but then I missed the weekends; I missed being on the boat with the crew and having things to do. I had to get back in.”

Just around the time he decided to look for a replacement, Peter Thompson, a broker with Worth Avenue Yachts , came to him with the idea of buying Lady Lau . “I had never been on a Codecasa . I had never owned one, never seen one,” says Rosatti. And the yacht was bigger than he intended to buy. He was really looking for a 54.85 metre, which would fit in a slip he had at North Cove Marina near his New York apartment. But then he saw the 64.92 metre, full-displacement yacht with five decks, beautiful joinery and a massive dome that he loves, and there was no going back. “[Peter] ruined me,” he says jokingly.

Built in 2010 by the Italian shipyard for a businessman from Asia, the boat never left the Mediterranean and was in pristine condition. The decision to buy was quick. “It took me one minute,” he says. What took longer were the negotiations; the deal finally went through a few months after he made his offer. Rosatti was then able to enjoy the yacht, renamed Double Down , in the Mediterranean. Though he had never met the yacht’s former owner in person, Rosatti sent him a letter to say how much he liked the boat. “I wanted to let him know I appreciated what he had built,” he says.

Initially, Rosatti had no intention of changing the vessel since she was in excellent condition. Yet today, the upper saloon, part of the owner’s deck, where he likes to work and keep up with the news on a massive TV screen, looks quite different to what it did just a few months ago. As a builder, he could not help himself – he had to add his touch. He rented a yard in Fort Pierce, Palm Beach, and hired Taylor Lane Yacht and Ship and Buddy Haak, whom he knew from racing days, to do upgrades and repaint. For the interior, he called upon Evan K Marshall . “There was no art on this yacht, not even a lamp,” says Rosatti. Gone is an ornate silk sofa with Chinese motif. “It was a beautiful couch,” Rosatti says, just not his taste.

Marshall found frames and statues for niches and new, rich, yet more neutral, fabrics for all soft furnishings; shimmering silvers and blues now play off the high-gloss burr veneer and gold accoutrements. They provide a lovely setting for the Steinway grand piano, at the entrance to the main saloon from the aft deck, on which the rapper Vanilla Ice once played Lean On Me. Rosatti captured the moment on his phone, where he also has pictures of himself with former baseball star Mike Piazza.

Much of what was has been done is not immediately visible, including details such as replacing wood shelves inside cabinets with ventilated electronic racks. The pièce de résistance, however, is the engine room. “I did my thing to it,” says Rosatti, who found the original to be dingy and hated the fluorescent lights and colours.

Now the mechanical space gleams with new lights, fresh white paint and chrome finishes on the floor, the engines and the casing around the generators, among other places. “You can walk through here with your bare feet and go back on my white carpet and not make a stain,” says Rosatti. The huge lazarette received similar treatment.

Double Down is his first full-displacement yacht, one of the reasons he went outside the US to buy. The fact that few yards in his homeland have facilities to build 60.96 metre-plus yachts in steel is part of why they’re not doing so well, in his opinion. “Two hundred feet is really big to build in composite,” he says and, while he is convinced of the strength of the material, he believes Europeans particularly are tempted to go with the more traditional steel. He’s always looked at the future and resale value. Although Double Down was at recent boat shows in the US, she is not for sale – at least not yet. “I want to put her in charter,” he says. Four to five weeks a year would be ideal, and he’s already received enquiries for the voluminous yacht with nine cabins. Still, there is likely to be a next boat some day and he’s looking into it. I prompt him a little and he gets up from his favourite armchair and walks around the bar to grab a portfolio lying on the counter. He flips it open to a profile rendering of a sleek, modern-looking 72 metre designed by Frank Mulder. “Isn’t she beautiful?” he asks.

He really likes the craftsmanship on his first Codecasa, but he will be considering various shipyards when he’s ready to build. He’s said in the past he’s never lost money on a yacht. It still holds true today. “I buy them right and I sell them right,” he says. “But I don’t count the money and time I put into a boat.”

There is, of course, the cost of maintaining the yacht and the crew. These are some of the reasons he is looking to charter Double Down . He employs 17 crew, including a masseuse and two engineers. He likes to recruit the captain and engineers himself “because I’m nuts with the engineering”. Isn’t this different for him, I ask, to have such a large yacht and crew? “I can never find them anywhere,” he says. “This is such a big boat that you can lose 17 people.”

Later, as we tour the yacht, we walk into the crew mess, a huge, well-appointed space, where we find most of the crew assembled, enjoying some down time and freshly baked chocolate brownies. “So this is where you all are,” he says laughing. “I saw your new car, sir. Wow!” chimes one.

With yachting and cars still making him happy, Rosatti, thankfully, appears to be here to stay.
