Miami Yacht Watch: The glorious Fountainhead returns

Not owned by Mark Cuban but Sears CEO Eddie Lampert

A post shared by Buster Bark (@busterbark) on Jul 9, 2017 at 8:12am PDT

Miami is a common host for extravagant yachts at all times of the year. Track these magnificent vessels and their outlandish toys with Miami Yacht Watch , which typically runs weekly on Curbed Miami.

The 288-foot Fountainhead, which has been mistakingly tied to Dallas Mavericks owner and Shark Tank star Mark Cuban as its proprietor, has returned to Miami from Port Everglades.

Currently docked at Island Gardens Deep Harbour Marina on Watson Island, the extravagant superyacht valued at an estimated $130 million actually belongs to billionaire Sears CEO Eddie Lampert, who apparently tells people — in jest — Cuban is the owner, according to the New York Post .

“The guy who owns the boat tells everyone that it’s mine,” Cuban told Page Six. “It’s so crazy . . . I don’t even own a boat.”

Heightening the false rumor is the fact Fountainhead features a basketball hoop on its aft. The yacht is somehow only the 72nd largest in the world, per Boat International . Fountainhead is equipped to house 14 guests and additionally includes a library, a recreation room, a full gym and health club, and a contra-flow swimming pool.

See Mark Cuban's 288-foot yacht with basketball court on the stern

@jdrifts

If you were on Mark Cuban's level, there's you no question you'd roll in style. But would you roll in this much style?

Cuban's 288-foot yacht "Fountainhead" recently was docked outside of Miami hotel the Epic.

If you were walking along outside the hotel, it would be pretty hard to miss this boat.

The Mavs owner is clearly ready to host his players at all times as there is a basketball hoop attached to the stern. Because if a Mav takes a vacation on a yacht the first thing on his mind is practicing on the water, right?

Have to wonder how it feels to be a Miami Heat fan and down on the water is gigantic reminder of the team that beat the locals in the 2011 finals.

How to buy a superyacht like you're Larry Page or Mark Cuban

Madeline stone   .

How to buy a superyacht like you're Larry Page or Mark Cuban

1000zen / Flickr

"Octopus" is a massive, 414-foot yacht owned by Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen.

The superyacht has become a status symbol among the wealthiest in tech - from Google CEO Larry Page's 193-foot "Senses" all the way up to Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen's 414-foot "Octopus."

But even if you're a billionaire fresh off of an IPO, there are a lot of things to consider before choosing to add a yacht to your toy collection.

" Buying a yacht - it's not a logical business decision. You can't rationalize it," Rupert Connor, owner of crew agency Luxury Yacht Group, said to Business Insider. " You can't use a spreadsheet to say, 'This is the breakeven point for happiness.'"

How much are you willing to pay?

You can usually find listings for boats currently available for purchase or charter on yachting industry sites like Yachtworld.com and Yatco.com . Individual firms, like Fraser Yachts , often maintain their own internal listings.

The most inexpensive yacht currently listed for sale on Fraser Yachts' web site is a 60-foot boat called "Reel Action." It's listed for $239,000.

larry page senses yacht

Justin Sullivan/Getty Images, Ari Helminen/Flickr

Google CEO Larry Page owns a 193-foot yacht called "Senses."

On the higher end of the scale, there's "Imagine," a 213-foot yacht that's on the market for $82 million.

But that list price doesn't even begin to tell the whole story of how much money you should be willing to spend if you decide to buy a yacht.

Annual operating costs - fuel, crew salaries, maintenance, and paint, for example - can be very steep.

Though many in the yachting world have said that you should expect to pay 10% of the purchase price on operations each year, Connor says that fees can actually be much higher than that.

Connor stressed the importance of surveying a yacht before buying it, as you may uncover structural flaws whose fixes will definitely stretch your budget.

" As boats get older, the capital value goes up, and the operating and maintenance costs also go up," Connor said. " The 10% figure is wrong, and it gets repeated all the time."

For a 200-foot-yacht, like Page's "Senses," fuel alone could cost about $800,000 annually. Maintenance might cost as much as $750,000 a year.

Page reportedly paid $45 million for the yacht in 2011 - it has a jacuzzi, helicopter pad, and interiors designed by Philippe Starck.

How often can you reasonably use it?

Some would-be yacht owners might think they could offset the costs of a yacht by making it available for charter when they're not using it.

However, Connor says that it does not make much financial sense to buy a yacht just to charter it, as the operating costs will far outweigh any profit you might make.

" Most people who buy yachts don't have to rationalize the purchase, though. They can afford it," Connor said.

Michael Busacca, U.S. Commercial Director and COO at Fraser Yachts, says it is possible to make money out of chartering your yacht if you give up the freedom of using it whenever you want.

Still, it's probably best not to depend on charter to make up the difference.

"T he owner needs to be very flexible on their own personal usage while in charter, especially during peak charter periods such as Christmas and New Years," Busacca said to Business Insider.

How many crew members are you looking to hire?

The number of crew members you'll hire will vary depending on the size of the yacht. While an 80-foot yacht might require only two crew members to operate, you might need to hire up to 60 people if you have a larger boat.

According to Fraser Yachts, some of the most commonly hired crew members include a captain, chief mate, chief engineer, chief steward, chef, and deckhands.

Luxury Yacht Group suggests setting a salary of $7,000 to $15,000 a month for an experienced captain. Mates should make between $3,000 and $7,000 a month, while a deckhand makes between $2,000 and $4,000. Crew members should be paid more on larger yachts, according to Luxury Yacht Group's guidelines .

A crew member onboard "Octopus."

Allen reportedly keeps a permanent crew of 60 onboard "Octopus." The yacht has 28 cabins just for the crew, according to the Superyacht Times .

What amenities do you want?

Yachts can come with all kinds of special features.

" Of course, new build yachts can be fully customized to the client's liking," Busacca said. "Many requests include, but are not limited to, on-deck hot tubs, gym, wave runners, tenders, separate crew quarters, on deck master stateroom, satellite communication and entertainment systems."

Google chairman Eric Schmidt reportedly paid $72.3 million for the 194-foot yacht "Oasis" in 2009. The superyacht has plenty of amenities, including a pool, jet skis, and a gym that can be converted into a disco.

Allen's "Octopus" yacht is fully equipped with a pool, two helicopters, a movie theater, basketball court, and a recording studio.

Former Oracle CEO Larry Ellison named his 288-foot yacht "Musashi" after a revered 16th-century Japanese warrior. The boat's amenities include two master suites and a basketball hoop.

musashi yacht

romanboed / Flickr

The 288-foot "Musashi" yacht is owned by Oracle billionaire Larry Ellison.

Mark Cuban's 288-foot "Fountainhead" yacht is the sister ship to Ellison's "Musashi." The two ships look nearly the same from the outside, though Cuban reportedly went for a more antique-inspired interior.

Where will you register the yacht?

Where you decide to register your yacht is very important , as it determines how much you will pay in taxes, how liable you will be for operating in international waters, and how you can operate the yacht as a commercial enterprise.

Places like the Cayman Islands and Marshall Islands are popular among yacht owners because they operate under tax laws similar to Delaware's, where many businesses often choose to incorporate.

Page , Schmidt , Allen , Ellison , and Cuban all registered their superyachts in the Cayman Islands, according to MarineTraffic .

"There are tax benefits to registering in the Cayman Islands," Connor said. "The flag behind the yacht shows which rules you're following."

Clive McCartney, U.S. Manager of Yacht Services at Fraser Yachts, explains what you should take into consideration.

"There are many things to consider including tax implications, operational requirements and the service required from your flag state," McCartney said. "Do they have their own surveyors or do they contract it to third parties, what safety code do they apply, how do they treat exemption requests, and what is their safety record? Registration of the yacht should be discussed with your Maritime Attorney and your Yacht Manager before making a decision."

Malta and the Isle of Man are also common registration points among European yacht owners.

  • Mark Cuban, known for his business ventures and NBA team ownership, owns two luxurious private jets – a Gulfstream G550 and a Boeing 757-200.
  • Cuban's Gulfstream G550 holds a Guinness World Record for the largest single e-commerce transaction, costing $40 million and saving him time for his loved ones.
  • The Mavericks' Boeing 757-200, acquired for $36 million, is specially outfitted for the NBA team, providing space for players, weight rooms, and a specialized meeting setup.

After making millions of dollars from career earnings or investments, most individuals set their sights on acquiring some of the most luxurious and exclusive assets. Some opt for mansions with gold-plated coffee tables, while others fill their garages with luxury vehicles. However, for some billionaires like Mark Cuban, some of their money is better spent collecting luxurious private jets .

Mark Cuban's love for private jets

Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Mark Cuban is an American businessman and investor widely known as the owner of the National Basketball Association's (NBA) Dallas Mavericks. When not on the court, Cuban is also known for appearing as a judge on the ABC business reality television series Shark Tank, where entrepreneurs pitch their ideas to a panel of investors to persuade them to invest in their businesses.

Apart from molding NBA careers, investing in start-ups, and trying to reinvent the pharmaceutical drug sales industry, Cuban seems to love private jets. In fact, the wealthiest of the "Sharks" in the tank has two. This already puts him ahead of other wealthy business executives and celebrities who have only managed to keep one aircraft in their fleet.

Mark Cuban's two jets are also no mere Cirrus SF50s, clocking in at $1.96 million. With a net worth of over $6.2 billion, it is no secret that the Shark Tank investor would think bigger regarding private air travel. As such, the Mavericks boss has a Boeing 757 outfitted for a world-class sports team and a Gulfstream G550 business jet.

Setting a Guinness world record with the Gulfstream

While his first-ever private jet experience was on a Gulfstream II, Cuban owns a 22-year-old Gulfstream G550. He bought the jet in 1999, just after he made his first billion from selling his second company, Broadcast.com, to Yahoo. The $40 million purchase placed Cuban in the Guinness Book of World Records for the 'largest single e-commerce transaction.'

He still holds the record to this day, showing that clicking "buy" on the internet just isn't the same for everyone. In an interview with Business Jet Traveler , Cuban said he e-mailed Gulfstream after researching the company's website. They arranged to set up a demo flight for his pilot, who subsequently raved about it, sealing the deal without Cuban ever setting foot on his new investment.

Mark Cuban's smartest purchase

In another interview with Men's Journal Health & Fitness , Cuban said the jet was the smartest thing he had ever spent money on as it allowed him to spend more time with loved ones. "It is obviously brutally expensive, but time is the one asset we simply don't own. It saves me hours and hours," Cuban said. He added that the most important things in life are family, time, being nice, and avoiding stress.

The Gulfstream G550 is a popular choice among private jet users, offering a spacious cabin which can accommodate up to 19 passengers, in addition to a private bathroom and sleeping spaces. Speaking to Business Jet Traveler about some executives who have stopped flying private because of public criticism, Cuban highlighted the convenience of business jet travel. "They have to make their own decisions, but I just hope I compete with them. I get to work while they get to stand in line at the airport," he added.

The Mavericks Boeing 757

The second jet in Mark Cuban's collection is a Boeing 757-200, which he acquired for $36 million to transport his NBA team. Cuban purchased the Mavericks in 2000, shortly after buying the G550. While refusing to offer details on how the plane is outfitted, Cuban says he came up with the strategic vision for the plane, specifically focusing on providing space for players taller than seven feet.

It also has a weight room, special meeting set-ups, and space for medical treatments, as well as coaching and connectivity resources. While there is no footage of the aircraft's interior, it sounds reminiscent of the concept developed by NIKE and cabin designer Teague, specifically catering to professional athletes and sports teams. Cuban, who travels with his Mavericks to most games, believes that the decked-out unique cabin gives them a competitive advantage.

Built in June 1993, The Mavericks' 757 (registration N801DM) is now just over 30 years old. It was first delivered to Iberia, which operated it until November 2000. According to ch-aviation , it typically seats 63 passengers in an all-business configuration. By the early 2010s, the aircraft had clocked over 16,000 flight hours across 11,617 flight cycles. Now, it typically flies for approximately 600 hours per year.

When the NBA season is over, Cuban charters the jet to larger groups requiring high-end seating. In 2006, the jet was upgraded with Blended Winglet Technology from Aviation Partners Inc., increasing its range and eliminating long-haul refueling stops. The 757 can be spotted ferrying the Mavericks back and forth between Dallas and other cities with teams in the Western Conference.

Other teams with private jets

While privileged to have a customized Boeing narrowbody, the Mavericks are far from the only US sporting team to own a private aircraft for flying to and from games. Other well-known names include the New England Patriots, with a Boeing 767 (N36NE), which has served since 2017 and whose livery is iconic at airports hosting games. The Arizona Cardinals have one of the largest aircraft in sports, with a Boeing 777-200 to move their players across the country through the NFL season.

While the environmental footprint for teams using private jets is certainly high, they attempt to justify this by how much flying they must do each year. With dozens of players and staff traveling from city to city with tight turnarounds and the need for specialized equipment and medical rooms, private jets are best suited for these teams.

A private Boeing 767

Unsurprisingly, the most expensive jet in Cuban's collection was a Boeing 767-200. The widebody was operated by MLW Air, a company founded by Cuban and partners to offer high-end charter operations and occasionally serve the Mavericks, with registration N767MV. However, the aircraft now seems to have been scrapped. Its last flight was in February 2021, and it was sold to an aircraft parts company, indicating the end of the road for the nearly 40-year-old aircraft.

After gaining fame in their respective fields of expertise, many celebrities purchase their own jets to make their worldwide business and personal travel more accessible. Many of them acquire a single aircraft and fly it everywhere, but only a handful can say they have a collection. Respectfully, owning two or more aircraft also takes a different level of wealth.

Apart from Mark Cuban, a few other celebrities, including John Travolta, Tom Cruise, and Cristiano Ronaldo, are known to have a collection of private jets. John Travolta's portfolio is by far the most exciting , with a Bombardier Challenger, a Dassault Falcon 900, a couple of Gulfstream jets, an Eclipse 500, and a Boeing 727. He also owned a Boeing 707 , which he later donated to Australia's Historical Aircraft Restoration Society (HARS).

Tom Cruise has at least two aircraft in his fleet , including a Gulfstream IV worth about $20 million and a classic P-51 Mustang. Meanwhile, legendary soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo owns a $65.5 million Gulfstream G650 and previously a $25 million G200. However, the latter was reportedly put up for sale last year .

If you were given enough money to purchase a private jet today, which one would you go for? Feel free to let us know in the comments how you would customize it!

Mark Cuban’s yacht

Palm Tree Charter’s Capt. John shot this picture of  Fountainhead , anchored off Cruz Bay last week.

The $120+-million super yacht is named in honor of author/philosopher Ayn Rand . Her novel, The Fountainhead , “was incredibly motivating to me,” the multibillionaire has said. “It encouraged me to think as an individual, take risks to reach my goals, and responsibility for my successes and failures.”

The yacht took the Dutch builders three years to complete. It was launched in 2011. Onboard, there is a movie room. basketball court, and a swimming pool . A staff of 35 maintains Fountainhead and Cuban.

There have been no reported sightings of Cuban on island.

How about the 457 foot “Rising Sun” anchored in Round Bay on the 3rd of March…Once owend by Larry Ellison, now by David Geffen!

So Mark Cuban’s yacht has a history to tell. I would love to stay on that yacht in the future. 🙂

I can’t help but see the irony on quoting Ayn Rand with a very rich person…she is hardly someone I would use as an inspiration for my ethical decisions.

I completely disagree…

And to think – my husband & I just want enough money to get airfare to SJ & a boat ride to the BVI’s. Wish I could get a job on that yacht. He’s a fortunate man – love him on Shark Tank. Hope he will be happy & healthy for a long time.

ayn rand was awesome!

Ayn Rand was a fanatical anti-Communist and more than a little paranoid. Do a little reading about her before you heap praise on her head.

Wow the fact that there are people that think there is something wrong with being anti-communist is frightening…enough said….

Mark cuban doesn't spend his billions on yachts, butlers, or chauffeurs because more staff means 'no privacy'.

Mark Cuban got candid about how he spends his fortune with podcast host Bobbi Althoff on Thursday.

The billionaire says he still prefers to do his own chores and drive himself places.

Unlike fellow elites, Cuban doesn't own a luxury yacht, but he still makes pricey purchases.

Billionaire businessman Mark Cuban doesn't want to let his financial status change him, and he's gone out of his way to maintain a normal life.

The 65-year-old owner of the Dallas Mavericks is worth an estimated $5.1 billion, according to Forbes. However, on an episode of "The Really Good Podcast," Cuban said he avoids certain habits that are associated with the exorbitantly rich.

"I just try to be the same person, I mean, as I was when I was poor, middle, and rich," Cuban told podcast host Bobbi Althoff.

In his quest for normality, he said, he doesn't hire staff to clean his home, cook his meals, or drive for him. He described purchasing a yacht as "just not what I would do." The investor added that more staff often means less privacy for elites who employ large teams.

"I like the privacy," Cuban said. "I've been around people who hire somebody to do everything for them, and that's just, like, no privacy."

Cuban's preferences differ from his fellow billionaires who spend hundreds of millions on luxury yachts . In 2016, he corrected assumptions that he owned a 288-foot yacht in an interview with Page Six.

"The guy who owns the boat tells everyone that it's mine," Cuban said. "It's so crazy ... I don't even own a boat."

Although Cuban is against spending his fortune on yachts, he still makes purchases that only the ultrawealthy can. In 2021, for example, he purchased an entire 77-acre Texas town about 55 miles south of Dallas.

After spending an undisclosed amount on the land, Cuban told local reporters he wasn't sure what he'd end up using it for — if he used it all.

The exceedingly high US spending per capita on prescription medications is mediated, at least in part, by the inefficiencies of existing generic pharmaceutical distribution and reimbursement systems; yet, the extent of potential savings and areas for targeted interventions for generic drug prescribers remains underexplored.

We aimed to analyze 2021 Medicare Part D spending on generic drugs in comparison with pricing of a low-cost generic drug program, the Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company (MCCPDC), to gauge the extent of achievable potential savings.

Design, Setting, and Participants

In this retrospective, observational study, we performed a systematic analysis of potential Medicare Part D savings when using MCCPDC generic pricing. The 2023 MCCPDC data, as of August 2023, were obtained from the provider’s publicly available database. The 2021 Medicare Part D data and prescriber datasets were obtained from the US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Main Outcomes and Measures

Outcomes included total prescription volume, proportion of drugs with savings, total US dollar Medicare savings, and average weighted price reduction per unit drug. Results were stratified by medical and surgical subspecialties to identify areas for targeted interventions. Subspecialty-wise contribution to total savings versus contribution to total prescription volume was characterized.

Total estimated Medicare Part D savings were $8.6 billion using 90-day MCCPDC pricing, with surgical drugs accounting for over $900 million. Nearly 80% of the examined drugs were more price effective through MCCPDC using 90-day supply. Commonly prescribed drugs in cardiology, psychiatry, neurology, transplant surgery, and urology demonstrated the highest estimated absolute savings. The most disproportionate savings relative to prescription volume were observed for drugs in oncology, gynecology, infectious disease, transplant surgery, and colorectal surgery.

Conclusions and Relevance

This study underscores the significant potential for Medicare Part D savings through strategies that address the systemic overpayment for generic medications. We identified key areas for reform as well as specific medical and surgical subspecialties where targeted interventions could yield substantial savings.
