The Sailor's Style Guide: How to Dress at a Yacht Club

If you've been invited to a casual yacht club rendezvous, you'll need the right threads to fit in.  in this guide, we'll walk you through the yacht club attire you'll need to fit in. hint: you can find the perfect outfit head to toe with castaway.

You've been invited to a meal or event at a local yacht club, but you've never been to one before. Suddenly, the panic sets in. What should you wear? Fortunately, there are lots of options and visiting a yacht club does not mean you have to spend a lot of money just to fit in. This post will give you some pointers on yacht club attire so that you feel neither under nor overdressed, and can really enjoy yourself and have a great time at the club.

Before you even think about what to wear, check to see if the yacht club you're going to has a dress code posted online. Most of them do, and the rules can vary from club to club. The Nantucket Yacht Club , for example, requires semi-formal attire for its dinners and cocktail attire including ties for men during its dinner dances and balls. The Hyannis Yacht Club goes into a little more detail. It accepts stylish casual wear including clean, neat jeans and shorts for lunch. For dinner, guests are expected to step it up by leaving the denim at home and wearing sports coats. Different areas of a club may also have different dress rules. Bars and outdoor decks tend to more lax and allow casual clothing.

Sometimes, the easiest way of narrowing down what to wear is to eliminate what you should not wear. This is just a partial list of how not to show up at any kind of yacht club unless you want to be denied admittance or receive a lot of disapproving glares. All rules listed apply to the inside of the club, and can vary for beach and dock rulings.

Flip Flops or Going Barefoot: This rule applies INSIDE the club, or for any meal time. Most people love the beach, but going barefoot is not only unacceptable, but unhygienic.

You'll want to wear appropriate footwear such as sturdy sandals or closed toe shoes. While a lot of children and adults love their flip-flops, they may be a little too casual for a yacht club atmosphere. The most popular choice here is a boat shoe style but a bridle bit driver is always appropriate - check the latest . The lightly worn leather and pencil-curled laces fit the bill in the cool department.

Torn, Stained, or Worn Clothing: Any attire that is showing signs of wear such as rips, stains that never came out, holes, missing buttons, etc. should be left at home.

Baseball Caps and Other Hats: Most yacht clubs prefer that men remove their caps when inside the venue. Save them for the sailing excursions.

Extra points on the water if you rock the Club’s Burgee on the hat!

Swimwear: Just a no-no. Save it for the boat and the beach. A cover-up can be acceptable for the patio.

Going Shirtless: Nope!

Undershirts as Shirts: See above. You may also want to be careful about choosing a t-shirt, particularly one with graphics, when visiting a yacht club. Most prefer that you wear a collared shirt, even if it's a casual one such as a polo shirt.

Tank tops for men and any tank tops for women that are skimpy and don't hide undergarments should be saved for another occasion.

Women have a lot of options when it comes to visiting a yacht club. Linen and cotton make the perfect summer blouses. A light but structured Sleeveless Top paired with a  sweater is perfect for warding off cool sea breezes when you're out on the deck. A polo or collared shirt works well for the yacht club scene as well. You can also consider a dressy blouse that has a little bit of flounce to it. If shorts are allowed for the time and area of the club you're visiting, consider sporting  Sailing  shorts  with a cute anchor embroidery. They're cool, classy, and show off just the right amount of leg. Casual skirts and dresses are perfectly fine as well as long as they're not too short and revealing. If you're attending a party at a yacht club you may need to wear a nice cocktail dress, or a classic Tunic Dress for a day event. Special events such as balls and dinner dances usually specify what is appropriate attire on the invitation.

Don't forget to have fun with accessories! A straw handbag can complete a nautical themed look.

For most casual yacht club occasions, men can't go wrong with a collared shirt and long pants or Cisco Shorts . Pastel and preppy shades such as summer green, hurricane red, and islander blue rule here.

When casual attire is allowed, collared sport or polo shirts are always in fashion. Seersucker and linen shirts are available in several colors and patterns for summer club get-togethers. If jeans are not allowed, seersucker or cotton canvas pants are still casual and comfortable yet dressy enough for all areas of a yacht club. If you really want to show your love of nautical dressing, consider wearing a fun Embroidered Pant !

Or you can opt for solid pants but add some nautical flair with an embroidered belt . Classic summer staples like Seersucker and Madras Patches will make you the talk of the Club, in a good way!

For those chilly sea breezes and evenings, a quarter zip pullover wards off the cool air while keeping you stylish and casual.

It's a good idea to keep a sportcoat and a few ties in your closet just in case the yacht club you're visiting requires it. Opt for a fun all over embroidered jacket, or a Madras Patchwork style to really up your game.

Kids' clothing should conform to the same yacht club rules as established for grown-up guests. If you really want your son to look cute, consider dressing him in the same matching outfit as dad.

Whether you're looking to make a splash with yacht club attire or just want to look good on the boat or while meeting with friends, we have the seaside looks that you'll look and feel wonderful in for men, women, and children.

Advancements and Promotions for a Pharmacist

Executive director vs. business manager, what degrees do you need to be a sociologist.

  • How to Improve Job Performance As an Accounting Analyst
  • How to Be a Workplace Strategist

A Ph.D. in organizational leadership can help you transform businesses using a variety of change-management techniques and tools, explains Harvard University . A doctoral degree in business is required to teach at the highest levels at colleges and universities, but it can open many more doors for you in the business world as well.

With a Ph.D. in organizational leadership, you can work in research, explore leadership dynamics in a global workplace or move into the executive office faster than if you only hold an MBA. Workplace options range from universities and research facilities to government and nonprofit organizations.

Education Program Director

With a doctorate in organizational leadership, you can become a program director in the field of education. Work for a university or run a nonprofit organization that provides leadership seminars and workshops. As the director, you can design the curriculum and choose the various speakers and participants. You can get started by signing up for one of the in-person or online doctoral programs in leadership or other similar Ph.D. programs for working professionals offered by credible providers.

Work directly with business leaders and executives who are looking for additional training in organization leadership. In your capacity as director, you’ll also have the opportunity to collect research from your programs to create projects for future publishing.

College or University Dean

Most university and college leaders have a Ph.D. before taking the helm as dean. As dean of a department or for the entire school, you serve as the leader and will draw on your extensive education in the field of leadership. Responsibilities of a dean include supervising a large staff, which requires exceptional management skills. You also are the primary communicator for the institution and must build important contacts within the business community and among alumni and donors.

Nonprofit or Corporate CEO

Business boards of directors increasingly understand the need for effective leadership at the top. Through the Ph.D. program in organizational leadership, future CEO’s learn how to manage at a higher level. You'll study real solutions to organizational challenges.

As a CEO with this educational advantage, you'll be able to offer the most up-to-date and best practices for corporate leadership. At the same time, you can fulfill company goals and objectives with insight you gleaned during your coursework, such as moving the company to a global level or increasing productivity and profits. You'll be able to apply your knowledge to nonprofits, as well.

Organizational leadership skills can help you more effectively guide an organization through changes, successfully develop strategies and interventions to mentor upcoming management leaders, and build teams while working with an increasingly diverse workforce.

Entrepreneur/Business Owner

Small business owners gain confidence to grow their businesses after studying for a doctorate in organizational leadership. When you take courses that emphasize entrepreneurialism, you develop the skills to take your business to a global marketplace.

You’ll study the dynamics behind human resource development, the ethics of various business models, finance and marketing. Through your studies, you’ll develop in-depth understandings of how organizations are run most efficiently and effectively so that you can turn your coursework into a profitable venture for you and your employees.

Earning Potential for These Jobs

What you can earn with a Ph.D. in organizational leadership varies greatly, depending on whether you take a job as a teacher/professor/dean, working for a government agency or nonprofit, or working for a corporation or as an entrepreneur. Your Ph.D. might have more impact on your salary in the academic world, which often pays teachers based on their degree. ZipRecruiter, for example, had entry-level organizational leadership jobs averaging $51,000 in May of 2022. OnlineSchoolsCenter.com had these jobs for people with Ph.D.s starting around $100,000 .

But many workplaces need more strategic vision, experience burnout among current leaders, and do not offer adequate development for leaders. In fact, the DDI Global Leadership Forecast 2023 found that confidence in leadership has plummeted, with leader quality ratings reflecting the biggest drop in a decade.

Professionals who want to be part of addressing the leadership crisis with purpose and meaning can gain the skills they need through a doctorate focused on innovative organizational leadership.

What Is Organizational Leadership?

Organizational leadership is a management approach that prioritizes empowering individuals as they strive to reach a common goal or achieve a shared mission. Skilled organizational leaders apply leadership theories in the real world, applying best practices and strategies to the workplace.

The need for skilled professionals in leadership roles is profound. For example, DDI forecast states that:

  • Only 40 percent of leaders report that their company has high-quality leaders
  • 72 percent of leaders feel “used up” at the end of the day (up from 60 percent in 2020)
  • Just 15 percent of leaders feel prepared to prevent employee burnout

Leaders and employees need purpose and connection at work. They otherwise suffer from low worker satisfaction and high turnover rates. But here’s the good news: meaningful leadership can make a remarkable positive impact. DDI reports that leadership tasks like effective coaching, clear development paths, and objective assessments make a measurable positive difference in the workplace.

A doctorate in organizational leadership equips professionals to step into leadership roles empowered with the skills and tools organizations need to thrive.

Pursuing a Doctorate in Organizational Leadership: PhD vs. Ed.D.

Professionals who are interested in a doctoral program addressing leadership practices will find that there are two options: a PhD or Ed.D. While the two organizational leadership programs are both rigorous, authoritative, and terminal degrees, they differ in important ways.

PhD programs are primarily designed to equip researchers and academics, while EdD programs prepare professionals to apply their learnings in the workplace. While an individual with a PhD in Organizational Leadership is mostly likely to work at an academic institution, a research organization, or a think tank, a professional who graduated from an organizational leadership program with an EdD is more likely to pursue a leadership role in the private sector, a nonprofit organization, a school district, or government.

The programs also differ in terms of program length and coursework. While an EdD in Organizational Leadership will take around three years, 60 hours of coursework, and a capstone project, thesis, or a Dissertation in Practice, a PhD will require four to six years, around 90 hours of coursework, and a dissertation.

Enhancing Leadership Qualities through an Ed.D.

While technical skills are critical in the workplace, study after study reveals that the “soft skills” leaders demonstrate are just as—if not more—important. Soft skills, or leadership qualities, include communication, problem-solving, and listening. Through coursework that covers various leadership theories, interactions with faculty and classmates, and applicable projects that apply to a problem of practice within one’s current career, students in a doctoral program in leadership can develop and hone such qualities.

Coursework in an Ed.D. in Leadership will likely include opportunities to develop leadership qualities such as:

  • Ethical Leadership
  • Professional Collaboration
  • Community Engagement
  • Adaptability
  • Cultural Intelligence
  • Decisiveness

Ed.D. students are empowered to engage leadership as holistic forward thinkers positioned for maximum impact by developing traits like these.

Developing Skills through an Ed.D. in Leadership

While high-quality leaders bring their own personalities and styles to the table, some skills define effective leaders. Competencies learned in an organizational leadership program, such as change management and research skills, can directly positively affect one’s work environment.

Leadership Skills

High-quality leaders have a robust skillset to draw upon as situations, and even crises, arise. The modern leader needs to be agile, adept at managing conflict, and able to work globally. During a doctorate in organizational leadership program, professionals develop skills that empower them to lead effectively.

Systems Thinking

Systems thinking refers to understanding how a whole entity—such as a school, business, or community—works together. Rather than focusing merely on one department or project, for example, a leader who is strong in systems thinking will consider the holistic impact of a decision.

In an organizational leadership program, professionals learn how to analyze and understand complexity to make the best decision for the whole system.

Change Management

If the past several years have made anything clear, it’s that the world, and therefore the workplace, can change in an instant. Organizations need agile leaders equipped to help their organizations transform and adapt. Coursework in a doctoral program in leadership will include the study of leadership theories that empower leaders and organizations to navigate change.

Crisis Response

When the unexpected occurs, people naturally look for leaders in their professional and personal lives. Students in an organizational leadership program will study literature and best practices for understanding and mitigating crises. Since an EdD emphasizes real-world applications, students often engage in activities that enhance their understanding of crises that arise in the workplace.

Employee Development

Ever-changing workplaces require adaptable leaders. Through an Ed.D. program, students learn how to transform as leaders to initiate transformation throughout their organizations . By studying how to prioritize growth and personal development, students discover how they can model the values they desire to see in their employees.

Coaching and Mentoring

During a doctoral program in organizational leadership, students carefully study coaching and mentoring processes that empower individuals and teams toward strategic growth. They consider the various dynamics of a coaching or mentoring relationship, such as processes, approaches, and benefits. Through coursework incorporating theories into experiential practice, aspiring leaders gain effective skills that will apply throughout their careers.

Research Skills

Effective leaders can analyze data and anecdotal feedback for key insights and learnings that can influence future decisions. The research skills developed in a doctoral program in leadership equip professionals to succeed in their academic work. They can also be applied to the workplace where new questions and problems regularly arise. A few of the research skills included in an Ed.D. program include assessing and analyzing theories, articulating a theoretical framework, and communicating research findings.

Assessing and Analyzing Theories

When challenges or problems arise in the workplace, skilled leaders consider multiple viewpoints and discern the best course of action. Learning to discriminate among alternative research viewpoints during a doctoral program develops the professional’s ability to assess and analyze various theories to make an informed decision for their situation.

Articulating a Theoretical Framework

In addition to assessing and analyzing theories, Ed.D.-equipped leaders can describe and explain theoretical frameworks relative to their field. During a doctorate in organizational leadership program, students design and conduct systematic studies using quantitative and/or qualitative research methods and learn how to articulate a theoretical framework based on literature review and their own research.

Communicating Research Findings

As a degree program with real-world emphasis, a doctoral program in organizational leadership emphasizes applied research. Students learn to communicate their research findings in the context of current issues and the practical constraints of the real world. They also become equipped with the best modes of communication for any given setting, such as a written report or data visualization.

Technology Integration

Modern leaders do not need to be computer experts, but they must be committed to lifelong learning when it comes to technology. Through an organizational leadership doctoral program, students discover how technology has affected schools and organizations, learning from the past to inform future applications. They develop skills in identifying how technology applications could improve effectiveness, facilitating transparent communication, and setting strategic plans and policies for technology.

Ed.D. Careers

An Ed.D. in Organizational Leadership can equip professionals for leadership roles in various workplace settings. Some of the sectors where graduates of a doctoral program may work include:

  • Education: K–12 school leaders, postsecondary administrators, deans, college professors, and provosts
  • Business: corporate trainers, chief learning officers, and human resources directors
  • Civic and Government: education policy analysts, leaders of grantmaking organizations, and directors of nonprofits
  • Healthcare: healthcare organization management, health policy, health research

Skilled leaders are needed in every area of industry. Graduates of organizational leadership programs bring critical skills, qualities, and insights to these roles.

Field experience offers critical points of research and reference for coursework

Can be completed in three years

Develops extensive leadership competencies through theory and real-world application

Become a trusted leader who can help dynamic organizations adapt and grow.

Graduates will critically evaluate and synthesize relevant research and theory in their exploration of organizational leadership. To examine psychological and leadership principles in a broad range of settings, the curriculum will cover a range of topics:

Additional Program Components

Residency Requirement (Online Students Only)

Online students are engaged in two brief residencies (roughly three and a half days each) at one of our campuses, providing an opportunity for face-to-face interaction and networking with fellow students from around the globe who bring a wealth of diverse leadership experiences and perspectives. At the first residency, students meet with their cohort and faculty members and engage in focused seminars. At the second residency, students participate in their competency exam.

Competency Examination

Every student is required to pass a Competency Examination. The aim of this assessment exercise is to evaluate the student’s knowledge of theory, research, and practice. This is also an opportunity to assess the student’s ability to demonstrate this knowledge and skill in simulations in order to judge his or her abilities as a future organizational leader. The Comprehensive Examination is taken at the end of the student’s second year in the doctoral program.

Dissertation

Completion of the dissertation is an essential aspect of a students’ academic experience and professional education. It provides the school the opportunity to evaluate the student’s ability to apply Organizational Leadership theory and research and to think critically and creatively about an issue in the field.

The dissertation should clearly and concisely demonstrate the student’s command of the research in a specific area of Organizational Leadership. In the dissertation, the student will critically evaluate and synthesize relevant research and theory in the topic chosen for study.

4 Things You Can Do to Increase Your Earning Potential

As illustrated in the list above, organizational leadership roles come with a wide range of salaries. If you want to qualify for top-tier jobs, getting the proper training and experience is important to develop the most in-demand skill sets in the field. Here are some smart ways you can earn more throughout your career.

Earn the Right Degree

Obtaining a master’s degree leads to higher salary potential as a comprehensive education gives you the core skills needed to succeed along with specialized elective training for your target industries.

Northeastern’s program is accelerated to propel graduates into the workforce and leadership roles faster. “This particular one-year experiential degree is geared toward people who are willing to take a year from work,” Stein states.

Create a Specialized Skill Set

The more skills you bring to the table, the higher salary you can command in organizational leadership positions. While you can bring many specialized, industry-specific skills to your organization, it’s important to develop leadership-specific skill sets that help you navigate management dynamics, such as facilitating cross-team collaboration. Some of the most crucial interpersonal skills include:

  • Employee Relations: Good leaders must be skilled at communicating, managing conflicts, and fostering a work environment that promotes employee success.
  • Performance Management: Leaders are invaluable to an organization when they have the insight and delegation skills to take a high-level view of company goals, projects, and resources to convert them into workflows and deliverables.
  • Employee Engagement: Motivating and retaining employees is crucial to bringing stability to an organization and creating a steady talent funnel for promotion.

Get Experience

The best leaders gain a strong understanding of how an organization works by interacting with its many teams and learning the importance of each member’s roles and responsibilities. Employers value this multifaceted leadership approach, but this doesn’t always have to come from years on the job.

“A lot of the companies say they want four or five years of experience, but what they really want is someone who is self-motivated and can provide immediate value,” Stein says. In other words, job applicants need to show prospective employers that they have the requisite leadership skills to provide immediate value to the company.

Experiential learning opportunities, like Northeastern’s Master of Science in Organizational Leadership/1-Year Experiential program, allow you to develop marketable leadership skills while also earning a valuable degree.

Find the Right Industry

Since organizational leadership is needed in every organization, much of your salary potential depends on outside factors like industry and location. Here are the top industries that reward their leadership with competitive salaries:

List of the top industries for organized leadership professionals

  • Administrative and Support Services: Business administrators guide an organization’s fiscal goals, employee development, and project prioritization.
  • Manufacturing: In manufacturing fields, organizational managers oversee industrial projects and large-scale production operations.
  • Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services: Professional and technical industries rely on executives and directors to deploy resources effectively and ensure satisfactory client experiences or product deliverables.
  • Health Care and Social Assistance: Public health managers are entrusted to put the right policies, procedures, and staff in place to properly serve patients.
  • Wholesale Trade: Wholesale managers work to achieve the right balance of budgeting, inventory management, logistics, supplier relations, and demand management.

Increase Your Earning Potential

Earning an MS in Organizational Leadership to enter a high-paying industry can be a great way to ensure a comfortable financial future. With infinite career possibilities, this field of study is incredibly valuable to those who don’t want to be “put into a box.” For prospective leaders, Northeastern’s master’s program comes with many benefits. “It offers you an opportunity to network with industry leaders while you are getting the practical, hands-on experiences that will jumpstart your career,” Stein asserts.

Responsibility Over Freedom: How Netflix’s Culture Has Changed

The company’s latest internal memo about its corporate culture is more about how it expects employees to behave than what it wants to become.

An exterior of the Netflix building at dusk. In the foreground, a highway crosses near the building.

By Nicole Sperling

Reporting from Los Angeles

Netflix has long been a company known for its secrets: no Nielsen ratings, little feedback on why shows are canceled, no box office numbers for the rare movies that are actually released in theaters.

Yet for a place defined by its opaque approach to the outside world, the streaming giant has long been aggressively transparent internally. The company’s philosophy was immortalized in 2009 when Reed Hastings, the company’s co-founder and chief executive, first laid out the corporate ethos in a 125-slide presentation that introduced new buzzy phrases like “stunning colleagues,” “the keeper test” and “honesty always.”

The presentation, with its insistence on constant and unfiltered candor, felt both brutal and refreshingly antithetical to Hollywood’s normal way of doing business. To the frustration of former employees and current competitors, it may just be the blueprint that has enabled Netflix to have so much success while its rivals have stumbled.

Three more culture memos have followed over the years. Before being released, they are pored over and analyzed for months by top executives. At the same time, any employee can pop into the Google Doc where the memo is being assembled to leave a thought or a comment.

The latest iteration of the document, which was released internally on May 8 and will soon be made public, underwent eight months of vetting and received 1,500 comments from employees, according to Sergio Ezama, Netflix’s chief talent officer. It is five pages long (half the length of Mr. Hastings’s final memo in 2022), and some core tenets have changed, however slightly.

When Mr. Hastings titled his 2009 presentation “Netflix Culture,” he gave it the subhead “Freedom and Responsibility.” The idea was that Netflix trusted its employees to act in the best interest of the company. If you want a vacation, take a vacation. If you have a baby and need to go on leave, go on leave. Documents were shared widely throughout the company without any fear of leaks.
