Rolex Yacht-Master Watch Review

Rolex yacht-master review.

Rolex has built a reputation on their classic and timeless designs. They’re not one to release a new model every other year. In fact, after the launch of the Daytona in 1963, it would be nearly another 30 years before they’d debut an entirely new model. That model was the Rolex Yacht-Master. Here, we’ll provide a Rolex Yacht-Master review, including key features of the Rolex Yacht-Master, the history of the Rolex Yacht-Master through the years, and notable wearers.

List of Key Features of the Rolex Yacht-Master

  • Case: Available in three different sizes – 37mm, 40mm, and 42mm – and two materials – gold or two-tone gold and platinum
  • Bezel: Bidirectional, rotatable, 60-minute graduated bezel
  • Crown: Screw-down, Triplock, water-resistant crown system
  • Depth Rating: 100 meters of water resistance
  • Movement: Perpetual, mechanical, self-winding movement manufactured by Rolex
  • Band: Offered with either an Oyster bracelet or Oysterflex strap

History of the Rolex Yacht-Master through the Years

The very first  Rolex Yacht-Master  was the Reference 16628. The brand only offered the model in a 40mm, 18-karat yellow gold case with a white dial. The Ref. 16628 also came equipped with a screw-down, Triplock crown and boasted 100 meters of water resistance. Inside, it housed the Caliber 3135 movement.

For the first several years, Rolex only made minor changes to the Yacht-Master line. In 1994, they released a slightly different iteration of the Yacht-Master: the Reference 68628. This variation was smaller, with a 35mm case. That same year, they also added a women’s version of the Yacht-Master: the Reference 69628. It showcased an even more modest case size, measuring just 29mm.

In 1999, Rolex introduced the first major update to the Yacht-Master collection. That year, they debuted an all-new, patented combination of metals created specifically for the Yacht-Master. They called this two-tone combination of stainless steel and platinum, Rolesium . At the annual Basel World Fair, Rolex launched the material in three different sizes. These included the 40mm Reference 16622, 35mm Reference 168622, and the 29mm Reference 169622.

The next update to the Yacht-Master collection came in 2005. That year, Rolex added another two-tone variation to the line, this time in stainless steel and 18-karat yellow gold. They offered the new colorway in the 40mm Reference 16623. Two years later, Rolex made the most significant change to the Yacht-Master line with the addition of the Yacht-Master II . However, the lineage of the original Yacht-Master has continued.

Rolex Yachmaster Crown view

In 2012, Rolex released the next notable upgrade for the Yacht-Master with the Reference 116622. While the model retained its 40mm sizing, it featured an all-new “super case” with different styling. In addition, it boasted an all-platinum bezel as opposed to a combination of platinum and stainless steel. Last but not least, it came equipped with a refined version of the Oyster bracelet featuring an upgraded clasp.

Three years later, Rolex debuted another first for the brand in the Yacht-Master collection’s Reference 116655. This time, instead of a new metal, they introduced their own rigorously designed and tested variation of the rubber strap. The Oysterflex bracele t marked the first-ever rubber strap for the brand. Ever since, it’s become a staple of the Yacht-Master collection.

In the past several years, Rolex has continued to make subtle updated and additions to the Yacht-Master line. One of the latest releases is the Yacht-Master 40 with a multi-color, gem-set bezel. More recently in 2019, Rolex introduced the first 42mm time-and-date Yacht Master Reference 226659.

Deep Dive on Key Features of the Rolex Yacht-Master

For years, 40mm was the standard sizing for the Yacht-Master. The smaller, 35mm variation was the only alternative up until around 2016. Rolex has since replaced it with the 37mm iteration for a smaller option. In addition, it’s only been since 2019 that Rolex has made a larger, 42mm option available.

Rolex Yachtmaster Blue Dial

One of the most notable key features of the Rolex Yacht-Master is the bidirectional, rotatable, 60-minute graduated bezel. Its design helps skippers measure and anticipate the crucial countdown interval leading up to the start of a regatta or sailing race. The screw-down, Triplock crown is another key feature of the Rolex Yacht-Master. This water-resistant system has been a staple of the model since its inception.

With only 100 meters of water resistance, the Yacht-Master is perfect for enjoying a day on the water as opposed to scuba diving. Yet, its in-house, perpetual, mechanical, self-winding movement makes it a robust watch for any occasion. In addition, the option of Oyster bracelet or Oysterflex strap made it versatile enough to take from land to sea.

Who Wears the Rolex Yacht-Master?

The Yacht-Master is a popular choice among many of today’s top entertainers, athletes, and chefs. Some of the Yacht-Master’s famous wearers include TV personality Ellen DeGeneres and film icons like Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis . Athletes across an array of modalities also appreciate the Yacht-Master. You can find it on the wrist of star players like former pro-footballer David Beckham, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan , and former World Number One golfer Justin Thomas. Last but certainly not least, the legendary chef Emeril Lagasse is among the Yacht-Master’s celebrity fans.

Watches In The Wild The Road Through America, Episode 1: A Model Of Mass Production

There is big news, and there is Rolex big news, and in some ways, ne'er the twain shall meet. At Baselworld this year, Rolex debuted a first for the company: the very first, ever, Rolex delivered on a rubber strap. Now, for most companies this would have little effect on watch enthusiasts other than to evoke (very) tepid interest at best, and boredom at worst – but this is not an ordinary rubber strap, this is an official, designed-and-tested-and-thoroughly-obsessed-over-by-Rolex rubber strap. And thereby hangs a tale.

rolex yacht master 2 two tone review

The Yachtmaster, as we have mentioned in some of our previous coverage , occupies a somewhat particular place in Rolex’s lineup of sports watches; it shares water-resistance and a turning bezel with the Submariner (the latter is water resistant to 300 m while the Yachtmaster standard model is water resistant to 100 m). It is certainly not a tool watch; the Yachtmaster is offered in either platinum and steel, or gold and steel (that’s Rolesium and Rolesor, lest we forget) and is either quietly or unequivocally luxurious depending on what size and metal you go for (Rolex makes the Yachtmaster in both 35 mm and 40 mm sizes).

The Yachtmaster’s history goes back to the first introduction of the watch in 1992, although the name, interestingly enough, appears on the dial of a prototype Yachtmaster Chronograph from the late 1960s (a watch so legendary I am actually forced to use the word; one of three known is in the collection of Mr. John Goldberger; we covered it – and a host of other remarkable ultra-rare watches from his collection – in a very memorable episode of Talking Watches ).

rolex yacht master 2 two tone review

The term “Yachtmaster” is also, incidentally, used for a certificate of competency in yachting which is issued by the Royal Yachting Association, although we’re unaware of any specific association between the RYA and the Yachtmaster watch.

Now, this newest version of the Yachtmaster does take a few pages from the existing Yachtmaster playbook: 100-meter water resistance, a bidirectional turning bezel, and a dial and hands that echo the Submariner. There are also a couple of features that may make vintage Sub enthusiasts wonder if Rolex mightn’t have an exceedingly subtle sense of humor; the gilt coronet and “Rolex,” and the red lettering, both features which according to HODINKEE founder Ben Clymer would have, had they appeared on a Rolex dive watch, made it instantly the single most popular watch in the modern Rolex inventory. The case is rose gold – Rolex famously makes their own, called Everose, in their own foundry, with a bit of platinum mixed in to prevent discoloration – and the bezel, rather than being some other precious metal (as is the case in the “standard” Yachtmasters) is in black Cerachrom – a very technical-looking matte black that contrasts sharply with the gold case. Somehow, between the rose gold, the Cerachrom bezel, and the new Oysterflex bracelet this manages to be the most luxurious and at the same time most technical Yachtmaster yet (leaving aside the Yachtmaster II, which we recently reviewed right here , but that is a watch that marches to the beat of a different drummer entirely).

rolex yacht master 2 two tone review

The two different versions of the Everose Yachtmaster (40 mm and 37 mm) sport different movements; the larger uses the caliber 3135 and the smaller, the newer 2236, which sports the “Syloxi” silicon balance spring (first used by Rolex in 2014).

rolex yacht master 2 two tone review

The Oysterflex bracelet is, in a nutshell, quite a piece of work. One of the most endearing traits of Rolex as a company is that it tends to demonstrate what we can only describe as a laudable degree of corporate obsessive-compulsive disorder when it comes to research and development, and it does so, often, without making any sort of fanfare about it at all. In this case we do know a little bit about the Oysterflex, however – it is basically designed to have the hypoallergenic and comfort properties of a rubber strap and the durability and shape-retention properties of a bracelet.

At the core of the Oysterflex bracelet are metal inserts made of titanium and nickel, which are used to affix the bracelet to the clasp and watch case; over those is a sheathing of “high-performance black elastomer.” “Elastomer” is a portmanteau word, formed from “elastic” and “polymer” and is a general term for natural and synthetic rubbers. In addition to the materials complexity of the Oysterflex bracelet, it is also shaped in a rather unusual fashion – there are ridges molded into the the wristward face of the bracelet, which are intended to allow the bracelet when worn to better approximate the natural curvature of the wrist.

rolex yacht master 2 two tone review

They might look a bit odd but in practice, the design works out quite wonderfully; this is easily the most downright comfortable and organic-feeling rubber strap I have ever worn, and like the entire watch manages to be both extremely technical in feel, and very luxurious at the same time; I doubt whether any company has ever taken so much trouble over the design of a strap (for all that Rolex prefers the term “bracelet” in describing the Oysterflex, habit dies hard and you’ll probably find yourself calling it a strap, just as we did). On the wrist, the two stabilizing ridges do exactly what they are supposed to: keep the watch from shifting, as heavier watches on rubber straps are wont to do, without requiring you to have the strap uncomfortably tight. The Everose Oysterlock clasp does a superb job mechanically and also looks fabulous into the bargain; the quality of finish on the clasp and case may not seem terribly elaborate at first, but it is as technically flawless as anything I have ever seen at any price, on any watch.

rolex yacht master 2 two tone review

What we have here, in other words, is a very Rolex interpretation of luxury. Yes, this is a gold watch, and a gold Rolex, and wearing a gold Rolex always carries with it, shall we say, certain semiotic complexities. However there is also another side to the watch, and to the Rolex approach to luxury in general: the taking of such pains to produce technical perfection that technical perfection becomes a luxury in itself.

Rolex yacht-master ii watch review.

The Rolex Yacht-Master II is the dominant sports watch model from the Rolex brand. On this review, Eric shows you the different types of Yacht-Master II’s and the functionality and purpose behind the model.

The Yacht-Master II was released by Rolex in 2010. The watch was equipped with Rolex’s new 4161 movement and featured Rolex’s Ring Command bezel for the first time, which is a main component behind the countdown timer functionality of the model.

At 44mm, the Yacht-Master II is tied with the Deepsea as the largest watch of the Rolex brand. Unfortunately, the Deepsea tends to be a lot taller than the Yacht-Master II , making the Deepsea look a lot more conspicuous on a man’s wrist.

The YM2 also features an Oyster bracelet with an Oysterlock clasp.

Is the Yacht-Master II a Chrono?

Many people mistake the Rolex Yacht-Master II for a chronograph, but it isn’t. It simply has a 10-minute countdown timer that is popular in regatta races.

On the video, you will see how the boating race timer is set and how it counts down. The timer can actually be set to count down from 10 minutes or less; 9 minutes, 8 minutes, etc.

For Eric, the size of the watch, the white dial-blue bezel combination, and its overall balanced look makes it the perfect sports model and definitely one that belongs in the arsenal of any serious watch collector.

The only thing Eric does not like from the Rolex Yacht-Master II design, even though he’s gotten more used to it throughout the years, is the way Rolex inscribes the actual model name on the bezel. This was too much of a commercialized moved by the Swiss watchmaker in Eric’s opinion.

Yacht-Master II Variations and Prices

The Rolex Yacht-Master II is available in yellow gold, two-tone, and stainless steel. Good prices for these variations (when the video was released on October 2015) are $28,500, $18,500 and $13,500 respectively.

The price of a new Rolex Yacht-Master II will be around $2,000 more than the above (circa video release date).

Eric’s favorite variation of the YM2 timepiece is the stainless steel version.

As far as the Watch Game is concerned, the Yacht-Master II is the perfect watch to take out on a boat or beach event; that is, if you want to make heads turn. It’s definitely a serious piece in Eric’s book!

The Rolex GMT-Master II Steel & Yellow Gold 126713GRNR, And Why I Fell For It

I shouldn't like this watch... but i actually do..

Rolex GMT-Master II Steel and Yellow Gold 126713GRNR

Of course, there were some more important new models presented by Rolex at Watches and Wonders 2023. The updated Daytona , moving to a 12xxxx generation, the titanium Yacht-Master 42 or a new dress watch, the convincing Perpetual 1908 . Nevertheless, a pair of new models – to make it clear, colour and material updates on an existing watch – managed to get quite some traction. I’m talking about new yellow gold-equipped GMT-Master II watches , and specifically the Steel and Yellow Gold (call it two-tone or yellow Rolesor) reference 126713GRNR. At first, this watch should be everything I don’t like… But life is sometimes surprising.

Rolex GMT-Master Yellow Rolesor 116713LN

Above: the 116713LN and 116718LN, models discontinued circa 2019, equipped with yellow gold case/bracelet, or yellow Rolesor case/bracelet – images by www.watchclub.com

Before I go up close and personal with the 126713GRNR (reference numbers are going more and more complex at Rolex…) we first need to recap the facts, and look at this new two-tone steel and yellow gold GMT-Master II for what it is. First of all, next to the full yellow gold version (reference 126718GRNR), this new model marks the return of yellow gold in the collection. Indeed, since the discontinuation of the solid yellow gold models – 116718LN green or black dial – and the two-tone yellow Rolesor – 116713LN – a few years ago, your only option for precious metal GMTs were Everose (solid or matched with steel ), or white gold . And, also important, they all come on an Oyster bracelet.

rolex yacht master 2 two tone review

These two new models feel actually very much like no-brainers, like unsurprising, totally expected models. Why? Because it feels natural to have Yellow Rolesor or solid yellow gold models in the collection. The watches you assume exist… but actually didn’t, at least for some years (from 2019 to 2023). So what’s the deal in 2023? Well, first of all, yellow gold, as a stand-alone material or combined with steel, returns to the Rolex GMT collection. Second, there’s a new two-tone bezel, in an unprecedented colour combination. Third, there’s a Jubilee bracelet in precious metal on the GMT, which is not only new but also hot. Last, I hate to say it, but they look very attractive. And I believe that it’s quite a general consensus here.

Rolex GMT-Master II Steel and Yellow Gold 126713GRNR

Today, I’ve decided to specifically look at the GMT-Master II Steel and Yellow Gold 126713GRNR. Why? First of all, while being a highly attractive watch, the full gold model is very flashy indeed and retails for almost 40k euros. Not very “wide audience” watch material. Second, the two-tone version has made yet another impression on me. It’s rather interesting to look at how tastes and trends evolve. Two-tone watches used to have a rather negative image in the past, but they’ve moved from “poor man’s” options (understand, I want gold but can’t afford the solid gold one) to “cool man’s” options recently. So, here’s my choice. Even I have a hard time explaining why… It’s everything I shouldn’t like.

Rolex GMT-Master II Steel and Yellow Gold 126713GRNR

Back to basics. This new Steel and Yellow Gold Rolex GMT is nothing more than a visual update. Case; the same Oystersteel middle case as before, measuring a typical Rolex 40mm diameter, a relatively thin 11.90mm height (it’s still a sports watch with a rotating bezel and 100m water-resistance after all), and a still acceptable 48mm length. Dimensions, shapes, and finishes are all identical to a Pepsi or a  Batgirl , with now a solid 18k yellow gold Triplock screw-down crown and notched bezel. The other novelty comes from the new ceramic insert, in an unprecedented combination of black and mid-grey ( GR is N oi R ). And I must that this muted, discreet combination pairs brilliantly with the warm tone of YG. As if Rolex wanted to keep the attention only on the gold accents, whether on the case, bracelet, bezel or dial. The rest is all discreet, subtle. This new insert is almost like a graduation on black. And I think it works even better next to the steel parts of this Rolesor edition.

Rolex GMT-Master II Steel and Yellow Gold 126713GRNR

As for the dial, it’s pretty straightforward too. No evolution to be noted in the design, it’s all about the colours and materials. As you’d expect, the black lacquered base is glossy, with applied hour markers and hands that match the case – thus, made of 18k yellow gold. And Rolex has also been slightly restrained when it comes to touches of colour. No flashy green or red accents on the GMT hand and GMT-Master II mention, just the same tone of gold as the rest of the dial. Tasteful and elegant, with just the dosage of bling you want in a gold or two-tone watch.

Rolex GMT-Master II Steel and Yellow Gold 126713GRNR

Importantly, this new GMT-Master II two-tone 126713GRNR, as well as the full yellow gold model, marks the first appearance of the Jubilee bracelet on precious metal GMT watches. It was only reserved for the steel Pepsi , Batgirl and Destro versions up until now. It means a 5-link, slightly vintage bracelet with polished 18k gold central links and brushed steel external links. Clasp; classic Oysterlock folding safety clasp with Easylink comfort extension link. Comfort; classic Jubilee, supple, soft and flexible. And the look is just as good as it gets (if you love Rolex and this style, of course).

Rolex GMT-Master II Steel and Yellow Gold 126713GRNR

Mechanically, no evolution either here. The new Rolesor GMT-Master II comes equipped with the Calibre 3285, an in-house automatic movement with Superlative Chronometer certification – meaning COSC certification and internal Rolex testing after casing, with -2/+2 seconds/day accuracy range. It features all of the brand’s latest innovations, including the Chronergy escapement, the Parachrom hairspring and paramagnetic nickel-phosphorus pallet fork and escape wheel, with a comfortable 70h power reserve. And like all watches from the range, it’s a flyer/traveller’s GMT watch , with an independently adjustable local hour hand, by one-hour increments.

Rolex GMT-Master II Steel and Yellow Gold 126713GRNR

So, why did I fall for this new 126713GRNR…? Besides the obvious quality of the watch, there’s something that goes down, as simple as it is, to feelings. For a rather inexplicable, or at least tangible reason, this new model created emotions in me. I used to own a GMT-Master II in the past (a reference 116710LN to be precise) and I’ve always loved the functionality and overall robustness of the watch, but blamed a certain lack of warmth and fun. It felt too technical, too cold. While I do believe that most professional Rolex watches should be steel, due to their own purposeful nature, the GMT-Master II is the one watch in the range that can use some bling, some colours, and some precious materials… Keep in mind that the Rolex GMT has never been a pilot’s watch in the military sense of the concept. It has always been a civilian watch, for travelling up in the sky.

Rolex GMT-Master II Steel and Yellow Gold 126713GRNR

All in all, and I’m fully aware that I’m being subjective here, I do believe this 126713GRNR is the new coolest GMT. And yes, you can tell me that I’m wrong in the comments below and list what version you prefer, because in the end, it’s all about personal tastes.

The Rolex GMT-Master II Steel and Yellow Gold 126713GRNR is now released and “available” from retailers (relatively speaking, even if the situation seems to have recently improved a bit) at a price of EUR 16,300 ,  CHF 15,700 or  USD 16,450 . More details at rolex.com .

A Closer Look at the Rolex GMT Root Beer

T he Rolex GMT Root Beer is a distinctive design within Rolex's iconic GMT Master series. More broadly it reflects the longstanding use of nicknames by Rolex fans to identify their favourite model. It's defined by its unique two-tone bezel which blends rich brown and gold hues hence the root beer moniker. The Rolex GMT Root Beer combines functionality with a differentiated design, ensuring a dedicated fan base for Rolex owners wanting something a little different.

Rolex Root Beer

History and Legacy of the Rolex GMT Master

The Rolex GMT made its debut in 1955, originally designed for pilots and frequent travelers who required the ability to track multiple time zones. In typical Rolex fashion, the watch offered an elegant solution to a practical need.

The GMT-Master’s subtle stroke of genius was the addition of a fourth 24-hour hand, in addition to the standard hour, minute and second hands, to indicate the hour for a second time zone. This is bolstered by the GMT-Master’s distinctive two-tone rotating bezel with 24-hour numerals — pilots could set the fourth hand to Greenwich Mean Time (the standard which all time zones are measured against) and rotate the bezel accordingly. More than a mere design flourish, the bezel’s two colors correspond to daytime or nighttime hours; this simple addition made even easier work of quickly determining the time in a foreign locale.

The Rolex GMT Master II followed in 1982, building on the now popular GMT model with a larger case and technical improvements.

The Evolution of the Rolex GMT Root Beer

Rolex GMT Master Root Beer

The Rolex GMT Root Beer variant was first seen in 1970, with the introduction of the Rolex GMT 1675/3 reference. This was followed nearly 20 years later by the Rolex GMT Master II in root beer colouring, with the 16713 reference, produced in both stainless steel and yellow gold. This was in production until 2006 when it was discontinued.

Rolex GMT Root Beer

However Rolex fans and followers were pleased to see the Rolex GMT Root Beer re-introduced in 2018 in the form of the black and brown Cerachrom variant (126711CHNR). This remains a popular modern GMT model for those looking to differentiate from the Rolex GMT Batman and Pepsi watches.

In 2018, Rolex updated the GMT Root Beer with the reference 126711CHNR. This new model retained the iconic brown and gold bezel but incorporated Rolex’s latest technological advancements, including a redesigned case and the Caliber 3285 movement for enhanced performance.

Rolex Root Beer

The profile of the Rolex GMT Root Beer has also been enhanced through its popularity among celebrities. Famous wearers include actors Clint Eastwood, Dwayne Johnson and Sylvester Stallone, as well as sporting stars including golfing legends Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler.

Source: SBU hits 2 oil depots in Russia's Krasnodar Krai

Ukraine's State Security Service (SBU) hit two oil depots in Russia's Krasnodar Krai overnight on May 9, a source privy to the information told the Kyiv Independent.

The SBU launched a "successful" drone attack on oil depots in the region's village of Yurovka, according to the source.

The oil depots damaged in the attack are reportedly transshipment points for fuel supplies for Russian forces based in occupied Crimea.

"The SBU will continue to reduce Russia's economic and logistical potential for warfare," the source said.

The operational headquarters of Krasnodar Krai claimed earlier in the day that six drones attacked an oil depot in Yurovka.

According to the Russian authorities, the attack caused a fire and damaged parts of the facility. No casualties were reported.

The fire was allegedly extinguished at around 7:40 a.m. local time.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) carried out a drone strike against Krasnodar Krai overnight on April 27, targeting the Ilsky and Slavyansk oil refineries and a military airfield. The oil refinery in Slavyansk-on-Kuban later suspended its operations due to the attack.

Ukrainian forces have launched a series of drone strikes aimed at damaging Russia's oil industry this spring. A large-scale attack against Russian energy infrastructure on April 20 reportedly started a fire at a fuel storage tank in Smolensk Oblast.

Strikes against Russian energy targets have prompted criticism from U.S. officials , who have made it clear that Washington does not support Ukraine's attacks on oil refineries, citing fears that it could threaten the global energy market .

In response, President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Kyiv has the right to use its own weapons with retaliatory strikes on Russian oil refineries.

Rolex GMT-Master II Two-Tone Evolution

The dual time zone Rolex GMT Master has a long, rich, and well-recorded history. This Rolex model was first conceived in the mid-1950s to help intercontinental pilots keep regular sleep schedules so they could safely fly their routes. Pan American World Airways even teamed up with Rolex to develop this watch, but it was later redesigned to house a new and improved movement and increased capabilities.

Essentially, while the GMT Master could keep track of two time zones with the use of its GMT-hand and rotating bezel, the GMT-Master II could display two time zones with just its two hour hands. The GMT-Master II is able to do this because the local 12-hour hand and 24-hour GMT-hand move independently of one another, allowing you to display two different time zones on just the dial and freeing up the bezel for quick access to a third if need be.

While the Rolex GMT-Master II was built as a workhorse – a tool for those traveling and working internationally across multiple time zones – it eventually received refinements like many other Rolex sport and tool watches have over the years. We all realize Rolex is well-known for evolutionary rather than revolutionary improvements, outfitting its watches with new movement upgrades, sleeker profiles, additional bracelet options, and new precious metal configurations.

Two-Tone GMT-Master II History

The very first GMT Master II was unveiled in 1982 and was exclusively offered in stainless steel, but it did feature an all-new black and red ‘Coke’ bezel insert. It wasn’t until 1989, when Rolex upgraded the model again, that we would be introduced to a two-toned GMT-Master II – the 16713. Two-tone steel and gold GMT-Master watches had been part of Rolex’s catalog since the second generation of Rolex’s multi-time zone pilot’s watch, but the first GMT-Master II in a steel and gold finish didn’t make an appearance until the end of the 1980s.

It’s also important to point out that while the full-steel GMT-Master 16710 featured the newer black and red ‘Coke’ bezel as well as the classic red and blue ‘Pepsi’ bezel and a solid-black bezel, the 16713 was outfitted with either an all-black bezel or a brown and gold ‘Root Beer’ bezel. Additionally, Rolex continued to lean into the luxury side of things on these steel and gold watches with details like the gem-set Serti dials. Today, these Serti Dial GMT-Master II ref. 16713 watches are quite collectible – with aficionados adoring the round diamonds paired with baguette and triangular rubies for the hour markers.

Additional Updates and Options

The dial and hands of the two-tone Rolex GMT Master II sported Tritium indices until the late 1990s when Luminova replaced it. Then around 2000, the updated Super-LumiNova came along (with the dial signatures changing from “Swiss” to “Swiss Made”) and shortly the drilled lug holes disappeared. The lume-bearing indices, as well as all hands, remained 18K yellow gold throughout this time. However, solid end links also appeared on the bracelet around 2000, and then in 2003, we saw the laser-etched crown logo start to appear at the six o’clock location on the sapphire crystal.

Finally, right around 2006, just at the end of the long reign of the two-tone ref. 16713, the watch received an updated movement. The Caliber 3186 replaced the previous Caliber 3185, introducing Rolex’s blue Parachrom hairspring and an updated jump-hour mechanism for smoother adjustment of the local hour hand.

During its production period, the two-tone GMT-Master II ref. 16713 was available with either an Oyster bracelet or a two-tone Jubilee bracelet. While the Oyster was typical of the Rolex sport watches, the Jubilee gave the watch a dressier, more refined look that many collectors began lusting over – especially if they had opted for the more luxurious steel and gold edition. The two bracelets give the watch two very different looks – one sportier and more classic, the other dressier and more elegant.

New Bezels, Bracelets, Movements, and Everose Gold

When the updated two-tone GMT-Master II ref. 116713LN replaced the ref. 16713, it relied on the same movement, b but virtually everything else had been updated. The new “Super Case” featured a thicker lugs and crown guards, the hour markers on the dial and hands were now larger (known as ‘Maxi’ style), the bezel insert was now constructed from Rolex’s proprietary Cerachrom ceramic material, and it included a redesigned bracelet with completely solid links and a new machined clasp. Additionally, the GMT hand and the “GMT-Master II” name now appeared in bright green.

We saw the GMT-Master II continue to embrace these dressy refinements in recent history, finally introducing its proprietary rose gold alloy, Everose to the collection with the two-tone GMT-Master II ref. 126711CHNR. The reference 126711CHNR combines durable stainless steel with the warm hues of 18k Everose gold, pairing the two-tone case and bracelet with a bi-colored brown and black ‘Root Beer’ bezel made from Rolex’s proprietary Cerachrom ceramic material. It’s also important to note that the Everose gold version is currently the only two-tone GMT Master II available and at the present time, Everose gold has entirely replaced yellow gold in the brand’s GMT-Master II lineup.

With this latest iteration of the Rolex GMT Master II, all the models (including the two-tone versions) were upgraded with the new-generation Caliber 3285 movement, the development of which required an impressive ten new patents. One of the most buzz-worthy upgrades to the Cal. 3285 was the Chronergy escapement, which features a skeletonized structure and allows for more efficient operation and a longer 70-hour power reserve.

Rolex GMT-Master II Two-Tone Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of the most commonly asked questions about two-tone Rolex GMT-Master II watches.

What is a two-tone GMT-Master II?

When a GMT-Master II, or any watch for that matter, is referred to as ‘two-tone’ that means the watch case is forged out of two different metals. In the case of the GMT-Master II, it is 904L stainless steel and 18k gold (either yellow or Everose). Rolex’s specific term for two-tone watches is Rolesor, so you will also frequently hear these models referred to as Yellow or Everose Rolesor GMT-Master II watches. The Rolex GMT Master II is also always outfitted with a matching two-tone bracelet, which is either an Oyster bracelet or a Jubilee depending on the specific model.

How much does a two-tone GMT-Master II cost?

The current two-tone Rolex GMT-Master II ref. 126711CHNR costs $14,800 when purchased brand new at retail, but this ultra-desirable model typically has waiting lists and trends hands for values in excess of their retail prices on the secondary market, with most selling for closer to $20k. On a pre-owned level, the most affordable models are generally ref. 16713 watches, with prices starting out at around $12,000, which only represents a very minor premium compared to the full-steel models from this generation.

Rolex Two-Tone GMT-Master II 116713LN Ceramic Bezel

Where can I find a two-tone GMT-Master II?

Today, Rolex only sells the two-tone GMT-Master II ref. 126711CHNR. However, these watches are so highly sought after, that there is generally a waitlist to get one. The secondary market is a great option for collectors who want to get their hands on a two-tone GMT-Master immediately – or for those that want their choice of discontinued models, as you can have the opportunity to buy current-production watches (like this ref. 126711CHNR) as well as other models that have not been available at a retail level for a number of years.

The secondary market has proven more appealing to many collectors in recent years because of all the options it provides. With Rolex only offering one version of the two-tone GMT-Master II, collectors who wanted a steel and 18k yellow gold model will need to turn to the pre-owned market, as did collectors who didn’t have the patience for years-long waitlists with no promises of ever actually receiving one before the model gets discontinued.

Does the two-tone GMT-Master II hold good value?

The two-tone GMT-Master II holds great value. The Rolex GMT-Master II is one of the world’s most desirable watches and nearly all examples of it are worth more than their original brand-new retail prices. Both current-production models and older discontinued references alike are all worth more than their original owners paid for them, so not only do they hold good value, but some are even able to appreciate in value.

What’s great about a two-tone GMT Master II is that you have the added value of gold built into the watch, but even more important than the value of the gold itself is the fact that these watches cannot be purchased brand new without spending a lot of time on a waiting list. This virtually guarantees that you will always have a buyer should you wish to sell your two-tone GMT-Master II, and there is a pretty good chance that you will get as much or even more than you originally paid for it.
