Clarence Thomas Took Free Yacht Trip to Russia, Chopper Flight to Putin’s Hometown: Dems

The allegedly secret gifts were disclosed in a letter from two Democratic senators that accused Thomas of potentially committing tax fraud.

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has been accused of not disclosing a yacht trip to Russia and a private helicopter flight to a palace in President Vladimir Putin’s hometown, among a slew of other gifts and loans from businessman Harlan Crow .

Buried on page 14 of a letter that two Democratic senators sent to Attorney General Merrick Garland on Tuesday, in which they urged Garland to appoint a special counsel to probe Thomas, was an astonishing list of dozens of “likely undisclosed gifts and income” from Crow, Crow’s affiliated companies, and “other donors.”

In the letter, Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and Ron Wyden (D-OR) said Thomas, one of the court’s staunchly conservative justices , even may have committed tax fraud and violated other federal laws by “secretly” accepting the gifts and income potentially worth millions.

“The Senate is not a prosecutorial body, and the Supreme Court has no fact-finding function of its own, making the executive role all the more important if there is ever to be any complete determination of the facts,” reads the letter requesting the appointment of a special prosecutor. 

“We do not make this request lightly,” said the letter. 

The list of potentially secret gifts also includes a loan of more than $267,000 provided by Thomas’ close friend Anthony Welters, the yacht trip to Russia from the Baltics, and the helicopter ride to Yusupov Palace in St. Petersburg. ProPublica first reported last year on the existence of extensive undisclosed gifts and lavish trips from Crow.

Additionally, Justice Thomas is accused of not disclosing tuitions for his grandnephew, free lodging, real estate transactions, and home renovations. The action escalates Democratic senators’ efforts to hold Thomas accountable for perceived ethics controversies. 

According to the senators, Thomas’ conduct could violate the Ethics in Government Act, which requires officials like Supreme Court justices to file annual reports disclosing gifts and income accepted from outside sources.

“It is a crime,” reads the report, “To knowingly and willfully fail to file or report such information.”

Since 2023, two Senate committees have been looking into the 1991 loan from Welters that was connected to Thomas’ purchase of a luxury motor home. Welters previously responded to a New York Times request for comment on the loan only to say that it was “satisfied.”

Thomas, for his part, belatedly disclosed some—but not all—gifts from Crow this year and has defended the gifts as “personal hospitality” from some of his and his wife’s “dearest friends.”

“The evidence assembled thus far plainly suggests that Justice Thomas has committed numerous willful violations of federal ethics and false-statement laws and raises significant questions about whether he and his wealthy benefactors have,” Whitehouse and Wyden wrote.

Readers who prefer a more sedate sailing style should take heart that some sailors are pushing the envelope. Eventually we may see developments from these radical boats that will be of benefit to cruisers, that is, asymmetrical cruising chutes. Also keep in mind that clever designers are managing to develop very fast boats that have forgiving handling characteristics, like the Thompson 8.

Tom Tom Taxi is a Thompson 8-meter (26.4-foot LOA) designed by New Zealander Steve Thompson. The boat was winning a lot of races in Auckland harbor with extremely well-rounded performance. The 8-meter has been so successfull that there is talk of an 8-meter development-style class challenge cup.

The D/L of this design is 82. The 2,464-pound boat has almost a 50 percent ballast to displacement ratio, with all the ballast in a bulb at the end of a vertical, constant-chord Iroko fin. Tom Tom Taxi is dry sailed dinghy style and the keel is pinned in the down position for sailing. The hull shows low wetted surface sections with some flare to the bow sections to help keep the boat dry. Taxi is also sailed with the biggest crewmember forward to help break the spray. The bow sections are fine and sharply veed. This deadrise is faired into a flat bottom at about station 4.3. Freeboard is minimal and the photos show each crewmember making a physical effort to keep the boat flat. We call this "hiking."

The rig shows swept spreaders, with the third set of spreaders at the hounds to support the big masthead chute. There is a retractable bowsprit. If we use the designers figures for main and No. I jib areas, we get a total sail area of 444 square feet, which gives us an SA/D of 38.97. Speeds in excess of 16 knots are commonplace on this boat. The sailing reports all praise the boat's surprising stability and forgiving handling characteristics. On deck you are really looking at a big dinghy. Yes, there are hiking straps. The cockpit well is very wide, with narrow side decks for seating. The deck edge is generously radiussed to make hiking more comfortable. There are two winches for halyard and jib sheet control, along with winches for the spinnaker sheets and runner controls. The rest of the deck gear is strictly dinghy style for lightness.

Construction uses carbon fiber and glass vacuum-bagged over a foam core with a male mold. Auxiliary power is by outboard motor.

I think the answer is to tow your Thompson 8 behind your Little Harbor 60. This way the crew can live and travel in comfort between the races. I'll do all the cooking on the LH 60 and have dinner ready when you return from a wet afternoon hiking your way around the race course. I'll stay busy wiping the dew from the brightwork and planning tomorrow's menu.

Two Democratic senators have accused Justice Clarence Thomas of accepting a free trip to Russian President Vladimir Putin's hometown.

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island and Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon filed a letter to US Attorney General Merrick Garland on July 3, asking to open an investigation into the Supreme Court judge.

The letter said there was a "serious possibility of tax fraud" and accused Thomas of having "secretly accepted gifts and income potentially worth millions of dollars."

The letter's appendix , which lists 35 undisclosed gifts, shows a "yacht trip to Russia and the Baltics" and a "helicopter ride to Yusupov Palace, St. Petersburg," both listed under the year 2003.

St. Petersburg, Russia, is Putin's birthplace and where he grew up. The president now resides in Moscow.

The appendix list is titled "Likely Undisclosed Gifts and Income from Harlan Crow and Affiliated Companies." Harlan Crow is a real-estate developer and the former chairman and CEO of the Trammell Crow Company.

The senators cited a ProPublica report from May last year detailing Thomas' hushed-up financial ties to Crow.

The report said that apart from the Russia trip, Crow also funded Thomas' grandnephew Mark Martin 's boarding-school fees, which cost "more than $6,000 a month."

In their letter, the senators wrote that other gifts from Crow included "multiple instances of free private jet travel, yacht travel, and lodging," as well as "gifts of tuition for Justice Thomas's grandnephew," "real estate transactions," "home renovations," and "free rent for Justice Thomas's mother."

In September, Thomas said he'd accepted three trips on a private plane owned by Crow . He didn't mention any other gifts.

Whitehouse and Wyden aren't the only Democrats who've voiced concerns over Thomas' sketchy financial ties.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez of New York filed articles of impeachment against Thomas and Justice Samuel Alito on Wednesday.

"Justice Thomas and Alito's repeated failure over decades to disclose that they received millions of dollars in gifts from individuals with business before the court is explicitly against the law," her statement reads.

Representatives for Thomas, Whitehouse, Wyden and Crow didn't immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider sent outside regular business hours.

Vessels like Mike Lynch's stricken superyacht are "unsinkable", according to the chief executive of the firm which makes and sells them.

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, told Sky News there are no flaws with the design and construction of the Bayesian superyacht which capsized in a storm off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, on Monday.

Five bodies were found by divers on Wednesday - taking the number of confirmed dead to six.

The Italian Sea Group also owns the firm that built British tech tycoon Mr Lynch's Bayesian, and Mr Costantino said the vessels "are the safest in the most absolute sense".

"Being the manufacturer of Perini [boats], I know very well how the boats have always been designed and built," he said.

"And as Perini is a sailing ship... sailing ships are renowned to be the safest ever."

He said their structure and keel made them "unsinkable bodies".

Mr Costantino said news of the sinking "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other".

"This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact," he said.

It is understood Italian prosecutors investigating the incident are continuing to hold interviews with the survivors.

On Tuesday they questioned the captain for more than two hours to help reconstruct what happened and provide useful technical details.

Four British inspectors are also in Porticello and have begun a preliminary assessment of events.

It is understood they will look at all relevant aspects of the incident, including the design, stability, and operation of the vessel. They will also examine the effects of the weather conditions experienced.

Twenty-two people were on board the vessel, 15 of whom were rescued - including Briton Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter Sofia.

Divers will resume efforts on Thursday morning to bring ashore a body they found earlier. One more person remains missing.

'Yacht trip to Russia': Senators publish list of Clarence Thomas’ gifts from benefactors

T wo Senate Democrats have published a list of roughly three dozen lavish gifts Supreme Court Associate Justice Clarence Thomas received from right-wing billionaires during his time on the Court.

On the eve of the Independence Day holiday, Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-Rhode Island) and Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) called on Attorney General Merrick Garland to appoint a special counsel to investigate Thomas for "possible violations of ethics and tax laws" in his "repeated and willful omissions" of gifts from wealthy benefactors.

"The scale of the potential ethics violations by Justice Thomas, and the willful pattern of disregard for ethics laws, exceeds the conduct of other government officials investigated by the Department of Justice for similar violations," Whitehouse and Wyden wrote. "The breadth of the omissions uncovered to date, and the serious possibility of additional tax fraud and false statement violations by Justice Thomas and his associates, warrant the appointment of a Special Counsel to investigate this misconduct."

On page 14 of the PDF Whitehouse posted to his Senate website, there are two lists of gifts to Thomas. The first list describes gifts from far-right real estate magnate Harlan Crow, and the second list shows gifts from other wealthy sponsors, like entrepreneur Anthony Welters — who "loaned" Thomas a luxury RV and then later forgave the loan — and billionaire Wayne Huizenga.

The gifts from Crow date back to 2003, and list excursions like "Yacht trip to Russia and the Baltics" and Helicopter to Yusipov Palace, St. Petersburg." Out of the roughly two dozen gifts Crow gave to Thomas, four are private school tuition payments for his grand-nephew. Many of Crow's other gifts were private jet flights and yacht cruises, including one Sens. Whitehouse and Wyden described as "around Greek islands."

And out of the gifts on the second list, three were from Huizenga, two were from Welters, and five were from former Berkshire Hathaway board member David Sokol. Billionaire Warren Buffett, who owns Berkshire Hathaway, forced Sokol out in 2011 after he learned that Sokol bought a stake in a company he later convinced Buffett's company to buy. Buffett called Sokol's actions "inexplicable" and "inexcusable."

"No government official should be above the law. Supreme Court justices are properly expected to obey laws designed to prevent conflicts of interest and the appearance of impropriety and to comply with the federal tax code," the senators wrote. "We therefore request that you appoint a Special Counsel authorized to investigate potential criminal violations by Justice Thomas under the disclosure, false statement, and tax laws; pursue leads of related criminal violations by donors, lenders and intermediate corporate entities; and determine whether any such loans and gifts were provided pursuant to a coordinated enterprise or plan."

In 2023, Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter Davide Cay Johnston commented that it was possible Thomas could face " criminal prosecution " by not paying taxes on the previously undisclosed gifts from Crow and others. He opined that any lower-level court judge would not be able to avoid the charges if they failed to pay taxes on gifts worth millions of dollars.

"What Clarence Thomas has done would result in not only any judges in America being removed from the bench, but there is a good chance it would result in criminal prosecution for income tax fraud and for false filings in his mandatory financial ethics disclosure statements," Johnston said in December.

Last month, anti-corruption watchdog group Fix the Court totaled Thomas' gifts and found that the conservative jurist had received approximately $4 million in gifts dating back to 2004 – far more than any other justice on the Supreme Court. And of the 193 gifts Thomas received, he only listed 27 on his required financial disclosure reports.

1,000 rounds of ammunition and fireworks were onboard yacht that burned in Marina del Rey: Owner

MARINA DEL REY, Calif. (KABC) -- The owner of a luxury yacht that erupted in flames and sank in Marina del Rey said 1,000 rounds of "unspent ammunition and fireworks" were onboard the vessel, according to fire officials.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department provided an update on the incident in a social media post Thursday morning.

The fire was reported shortly after 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at 211 Basin A, where flames engulfed the multi-level, 100-foot boat, the agency said.

Residents in the area said they heard multiple explosions resonating throughout the harbor as yacht was consumed by flames. Fire officials said two people were able to get off the boat uninjured.

Fire crews poured water onto the burning vessel, which later sank into the harbor.

An environmental hazard team was expected to arrive in Marina del Rey Thursday to assist with the cleanup of the burned vessel.

A United States Coast Guard Incident Management Team from Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach is monitoring the cleanup efforts, according to the Coast Guard, which said that the yacht "caught fire and discharged red-dye diesel."

"The fire did not appear to damage any other vessels in the harbor," the USCG said in a statement Thursday. "The Coast Guard is working with Patriot Environmental Services and Clean Harbors organizations to contain and recover the discharge from the yacht."

The yacht's fuel capacity was reported to be 6,000 gallons, according to the Coast Guard. Crews from California Department of Fish and Wildlife's Office of Spill Prevention and Response and the L.A. County Sheriff's Department are also assisting in the efforts.

The Oiled Wildlife Care Network was also notified and was on standby for wildlife response. "No observations of oiled wildlife have been reported at this time," the Coast Guard said Thursday morning. "For your safety and the safety of the animals, do not attempt to capture oiled animals." Witnesses were urged to report oiled wildlife to (877) 823-6926.

The parents of a Missouri teenager who allegedly brought a gun to a school were charged on Thursday after officials say the two adults hid the boy’s backpack full of ammunition in the mother’s home after their son was arrested.

Terry Thompson and Traci Thompson were identified by multiple local news outlets as the parents of the teen in custody on Tuesday after police allege he planned shootings at multiple schools in the Ritenour School District.

A spokesperson for the St. Ann Police Department confirmed to HuffPost that the suspect was 16 years old and not a current Ritenour School District student.

The parents were both charged with tampering with physical evidence in a felony prosecution, according to a criminal complaint obtained by HuffPost.

St. Ann police said in a Facebook post on the St. Ann Neighborhood Watch page, an official account run by the department, that they received information on Tuesday from another student’s grandmother that the 16-year-old had made threats against the Ritenour School District on social media.

The teen was located at one of the schools with a fully loaded gun, according to police. Police say that when authorities approached, he attempted to flee and tossed his gun.

He was arrested about a block from the school, according to NBC affiliate KSDK .

The parents were reportedly present when the teen was taken into custody, and according to the St. Ann Police Department post, they went back to the father’s home to take their son’s backpack full of ammunition and hid it in the mother’s home in an attempt to conceal it during the police investigation.

“This could have been some Uvalde situation. And we stopped that from happening,” St. Ann Police Chief Aaron Jimenez told local news station KMOV following the arrest.

According to the outlet, police recovered a fully loaded Glock handgun with an extended magazine from a recycling bin near Husky Academy, an alternative school for grades 5 through 12.

After their son was arrested, the parents were taken into custody on outstanding warrants and authorities executed a search warrant on both their homes, according to St. Ann police.

Police say the 16-year-old’s backpack found at the mother’s home “held multiple high-capacity magazines and ammunition.”

The teen remains in juvenile custody, police said. His parents’ criminal complaint stated he was charged with making a terroristic threat at a high school, unlawful use of a weapon and resisting arrest.

The parents are set to appear at St Louis County Court on Sept. 27 for a bond reduction hearing. Court records did not list an attorney representing the two.

Kansas State's Chris Klieman Believes Skylar Thompson 'Ready' To Lead Dolphins

Former Kansas State Wildcats quarterback Skylar Thompson was vaulted into the spotlight late in Week 2.

Thompson entered the game after the Miami Dolphins starting quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, left with a concussion. Tagovailoa was later placed on the IR, meaning he'll miss a minimum of four games. Although the Dolphins brought in Pro Bowler Tyler Huntley, coach Mike McDaniel made it clear Thompson is the team's starter.

Thompson's ex-coach, Chris Klieman, believes he is more than ready to take hold of the opportunity.

“Skylar’s a flat winner," Klieman shared at a recent press conference. "When adversity sometimes is at the highest is when I think he performs the best. I think he’s gonna light it up, I know he’s ready for this moment.”

Thompson spent five seasons at K-State, with all but two coming under Klieman as the head coach. Arguably Thompson's best season came in Klieman's first year at the helm, recording 2,315 yards for 12 touchdowns and five interceptions.

When Thompson stepped in against the Buffalo Bills, he was not asked to air the ball out much despite their multiple touchdown deficit. He finished with a mediocre statline of 8 of 14 for 80 yards. Instead, the Dolphins offense relied on star running back De'Von Achance, who recorded more than 20 carries, 100 rushing yards, and a touchdown.

Investigation found that Clarence Thomas took free yacht, helicopter trips in Russia: Democrats

A Senate Judiciary Committee investigation found that conservative Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas failed to disclose at least 35 luxury gifts, including a free yacht trip to Russia and a private helicopter to a palace in St. Petersburg, Vladimir Putin's hometown, Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., and Ron Wyden, D-Or., said  in a letter  to Attorney General Merrick Garland.

The letter raised the "serious possibility of tax fraud" and accused Thomas of having "secretly accepted gifts and income potentially worth millions of dollars," mostly from billionaire real estate developer Harlan Crow, who Thomas once described as being among his "dearest friends." Buried in appendix list on page 14 are the references to the Russia trips, which took place in 2003. Other gifts from Crow include "multiple instances of free private jet travel, yacht travel, and lodging," "gifts of tuition for Justice Thomas's grandnephew," "real estate transactions," "home renovations," and "free rent for Justice Thomas's mother."

“The Senate is not a prosecutorial body, and the Supreme Court has no fact-finding function of its own, making the executive role all the more important if there is ever to be any complete determination of the facts,” the letter reads.

After a bombshell ProPublica report last year that revealed the extent of Thomas' financial ties with Crow and attempts to hide it, Thomas admitted to taking three trips on a private plane owned by Crow, but did not disclose any of the other gifts.

The senators are asking Garland to launch a special counsel investigation into Thomas, with the evidence collected so far "plainly suggest[ing] that Justice Thomas has committed numerous willful violations of federal ethics and false-statement laws and raises significant questions about whether he and his wealthy benefactors have complied with their federal tax obligations."

In a separate move on Wednesday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and a group of fellow progressives filed articles of impeachment against Thomas and Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito for failing to disclose "millions of dollars in gifts from individuals with business before the court."

Oscar-nominated actor Dame Emma Thompson has been pictured on-board a £200million superyacht on the water in Venice.

The gargantuan vessel belongs to billionaire Fox News co-founder Barry Diller and his wife Diane von Furstenberg.

Von Furstenberg is also a household name thanks to her globally successful designer fashion brand.

And the trio weren't the only A-listers on-board the yacht as the likes of Diane Sawyer and Candice Bergen were also spotted.

The outing is worlds away from a previous famous boat incident involving Thompson dating back to 2019.

The actor joined Extinction Rebellion protestors on the streets of London where she irked the public by blocking traffic in protest.

Alongside fellow protestors, Thompson boarded a bright pink "boat" on the streets of London, bringing traffic to a standstill.

However, she was criticised at the time for the hypocrisy of jetting back and forth from LA to London to attend the protests.

She even read aloud a fake weather report during the protest as she preached about the world heading for "irreversible change".

Thompson defended her actions by claiming she was racking up far fewer air miles since taking part in climate change activism.

The actor has homes in the US, UK and Venice itself alongside her husband and fellow actor, Greg Wise.

Also joining her onboard the superyacht was Mujen Spirits co-founder Bruce Bozzi who shared a snapshot of his time in Venice alongside the stars.

Bozzi posted a snap of a dinner he shared with the A-listers and their families as he captioned: "Most beautiful fish caught last night fed this family of friends!

"Family owned small restaurant, great white wine, loving conversation with close friends ....my favorite! Hello Saturday."

Thompson is in Venice to attend the Diana Von Furstenberg [DVF] awards at which she's nominated for a gong.

The awards self-proclaim it "recognises and supports extraordinary women who are dedicated to transforming the lives of other women".

Joining Thompson at the awards will be human rights lawyer Amal Clooney who is also up for an award.
