How Do I Start My Own Boat Charter Business?

Last Updated on May 19, 2022 by Boatsetter Team

Have you ever thought about starting a charter business ? As a boat owner, you might have found that the costs of owning a boat can add up quickly. You might not have quite as much time as you used to for boating now, so it might seem that your boat goes unused for much of the year. Likewise, there’s been a lot of talk in the last year about the “Great Resignation”—people quitting their jobs out of a desire for something better. Fascinatingly, many Americans have turned to entrepreneurship.

For many, starting their own business has meant joining the rapidly growing sharing economy (think the Airbnb, Uber, and Turo’s of the world). Believe it or not, you can do the same thing by listing your vessel as a boat charter, or even just as a basic boat rental. So, how do you get started? Easy—you can start your own boat, yacht or fishing charter business right here on Boatsetter .

Before we dive in, let’s take a closer look at the various types of charters you may be interested in running, and some tips for success as you get started.

How to Start a Boat Charter Business

  • Determine the type of charter you’re interested in running—bareboat boat, captained, fishing, or luxury yacht charters.
  • Use a peer-to-peer boat rental platform to list your boat(s) or fleet.
  • Easy secure peer-to-peer or commercial boat insurance , for peace-of-mind to protect yourself and your boats from potential damages and liability.
  • Create a listing for your boat(s) or charter(s), including price, location, images, description, and other relevant details.
  • Manage your charter business (bookings, schedule, payment, reviews) directly on the peer-to-peer rental platform.

Types of Boat Charters

Firstly, boat charter is another way of saying “boat rental.” As the owner, you make your vessel available for other cruisers to book. They can do so for as little as a few hours. Additionally, you’re typically providing just the boat. Therefore, the cruisers are responsible for navigation and provisioning—although there are exceptions.

For instance, with some charter boat businesses, boat owners provide a customized itinerary and necessary provisions. They may provide a professional captain, too—these are called captained charters . This is especially helpful if the interested parties are unfamiliar with the waters. It’s also important for novice boaters. In fact, it’s common for newcomers to use boat and yacht charter as a way to “try before you buy.”

Two types of charter boat businesses that definitely include captains and custom itineraries are fishing charters and luxury yacht charters.

  • Fishing charters are exactly what they sound like: a few hours on the water pursuing different fish, with an expert guide. The boat owner supplies the fishing gear, along with safety equipment, of course, and niceties like bottled water.
  • Luxury yacht charters , meanwhile, offer more white-glove service. They’re typically up to a week in a highly desirable location, ranging from the Bahamas to the Caribbean and to the Mediterranean. The yachts come with full professional crews, too, like a chef, stewardesses, and deckhands. All meals are included, with menus tailored to your tastes. The same is true for activities, like using watertoys.

Finally, bareboat charters are when cruisers rent or lease out a vessel for a certain period with time, with no crew or provisions provided.

Advice & Tips for Success for Starting Your Own Boat Charter Business

Use a peer-to-peer boat rental marketplace to list, manage, and advertise your fleet.

So, what exactly does starting a charter boat business entail? First, you should use a peer-to-peer rental platform, like Boatsetter !

Here’s how it works… Our team walk you through the process in getting started, and we’ll provide support each and every step of the way—from sign up, to listing your boat, connecting with potential renters, managing your boat’s schedule, and of course, getting paid!

Learn more about the process by visiting Why List with Boatsetter.

Understanding Insurance For a Boat Rental Business

Since your boat is a valuable asset, you need to be sure that it is safe if you decide to offer it as a charter rental. There are good reasons that you need good boat insurance , such as protecting yourself and your boat from expensive damage. Luckily, Boatsetter is the only peer-to-peer marketplace in the US that offers peer-to-peer boat insurance , thanks to our exclusive partnership with GEICO/BoatUS.

This Peer-to-Peer Boat Rental Policy is the primary policy that covers you during the Boatsetter rental period and it doesn’t require you to change anything that you already have with your regular boat policy. Each Boatsetter rental covered under this policy comes with significant liability coverage, and is ideal for owners who are interested in chartering because the insurance costs are very low.

Create Your Detailed Listing to Ensure You Stand Out from the Rest

Once you have adequate insurance, you’ll still need to find people who want to rent your boat. Here are some really easy ways to make your boat more attractive as a charter rental when listing on Boatsetter (take a quick look at this list too).

Check Out Your Competition

Be sure to browse how owners of boats similar to yours list them. How do they describe the amenities? What types of photos do they include? What rates do they charge? Use these to determine the best way to show-and-tell your boat, as well as the experience cruisers can enjoy.

Include Great Images—and a Strong Description—and Keep Them Updated Regularly

In general, when listing your boat as a charter rental, keep your listing as current as possible by updating your images constantly.

Weigh your options for how and when to offer your boat for charter. Do you want to provide a few hours on weekdays during spring, summer, and fall in your home waters? Are you open to both weekdays and weekends during peak season? Or, do you chase the sun and therefore want to offer charters in different states at different times of the year?

Always Provide Good Customer Service

Always respond as quickly as you can to queries about your charter rental. Make sure you obtain reviews from previous satisfied customers. Finally, make sure your price is competitive and comparable to the cost of other similar charter rentals.

If you follow those suggestions, it should be easy to list your boat as a charter rental. Once you’ve signed up your boat on Boatsetter and successfully listed it as a charter rental a few times, you might want to invest in a few more boats. Luckily, listing your boat on Boatsetter is a seamless process. Our expert team is available to walk you through any questions you might have.

The Boatsetter Difference

Since you’re already here at Boatsetter , you may know that its peer-to-peer rental platform makes starting a boat charter business pretty simple. In fact, Boatsetter’s co-founder, Jaclyn Baumgarten, created the company because she believed that boats should be as accessible as Airbnb rental properties. Simultaneously, she believed that boat owners should be able to earn money to offset upkeep costs.

While Boatsetter lets you respond to booking requests and messages, it makes your listings—and time—more workable in other ways. Boat managers are at your disposal to handle these tasks, plus update your calendar and edit listings.

Of primary importance, though, Boatsetter is the only insured peer-to-peer boat rental platform in the United States. GEICO Marine Insurance Company underwrites coverage, created from scratch as a standalone policy covering the period of time the boat is under rental. And, for even more safety and peace of mind, on-the-water assistance comes via TowBoatUS.

All that’s left to do now is to list and lease—and love how you can earn.

a.) A Quick Overview of Owning a Yacht Charter Business

A yacht charter business offers individuals or groups the opportunity to rent or lease yachts for specified durations, typically for recreational purposes such as cruising, fishing, or hosting events.

These businesses provide access to a fleet of yachts ranging from small vessels to luxury superyachts, catering to various preferences and budgets.

Maintenance and Upkeep:

  • Overseeing regular maintenance tasks to ensure the yachts are in optimal condition.
  • Coordinating repairs and servicing as necessary, often involving external contractors.
  • Conducting inspections to address any issues promptly and maintain safety standards.

Crew Management:

  • Hiring, training, and supervising crew members, including captains, deckhands, and chefs.
  • Ensuring compliance with maritime regulations and safety protocols.
  • Managing crew schedules and assignments for each charter.

Marketing and Promotion:

  • Developing marketing strategies to attract new clients and retain existing ones.
  • Utilizing online platforms, social media, and targeted advertising to reach potential customers.
  • Collaborating with travel agencies, event planners, and other industry partners for promotional opportunities.

Fleet Ownership:

  • Acquiring a fleet of yachts either through purchase or long-term lease agreements.
  • Directly managing all aspects of yacht maintenance, crew hiring, and client bookings.

Fractional Ownership:

  • Offering clients the opportunity to purchase a share of a yacht, granting them access for a specified period each year.
  • Shared responsibility for maintenance and operational costs among multiple owners.

Brokerage Model:

  • Acting as an intermediary between yacht owners and clients, facilitating charter agreements for a commission fee.
  • Minimal overhead costs as the business does not own or maintain the yachts directly.

Membership Clubs:

  • Providing members with access to a fleet of yachts in exchange for membership fees.
  • Offering various membership tiers with different levels of access and benefits.

Challenges During the Startup Phase of a Yacht Charter Business

  • Limited access to funding sources or high upfront costs can hinder business launch.

Market Competition:

  • Established players in the industry may already have strong brand recognition and customer loyalty.

  • Failure to comply with regulations can result in legal consequences and reputational damage.

Crew Recruitment and Training:

  • Finding qualified crew members, including captains, deckhands, and service staff, can be difficult.
  • Providing comprehensive training to ensure crew competency and adherence to safety protocols is essential.

Marketing and Brand Building:

  • Building awareness and visibility in the market requires strategic marketing efforts.

Challenges During Operation of a Yacht Charter Business

Seasonal Demand Fluctuations:

  • Managing cash flow and operational expenses during offseason can be challenging.

Maintenance and Repairs:

  • Regular maintenance and unexpected repairs are inevitable in yacht operations.
  • Balancing maintenance schedules to minimize downtime while ensuring safety and operational efficiency is critical.

Customer Satisfaction and Retention:

  • Maintaining high service standards and exceeding customer expectations is essential for repeat business.
  • Addressing customer complaints and feedback promptly to preserve the business’s reputation.

Economic Instability:

  • Economic downturns or geopolitical uncertainties can impact discretionary spending on luxury experiences like yacht charters.
  • Implementing contingency plans and diversifying revenue streams can mitigate the effects of economic volatility.

Operational Efficiency:

  • Streamlining processes and optimizing resource allocation to maximize profitability.
  • Managing logistical challenges such as fuel consumption, docking fees, and itinerary planning efficiently.

In conclusion, navigating the challenges of both the startup phase and ongoing operation of a yacht charter business requires careful planning, adaptability, and a commitment to delivering exceptional service to clients.

3. Research

Quality information plays a significant role in achieving success.

Continuous research is vital. The more you know, the easier it is to operate your business.

a.) Demand, the Competition and Your Location b.) Target Audience

a.) Demand, the Competition and Your Location

Determining the demand for your products and services before starting your yacht charter business is essential. Offering high quality and reasonable prices is not enough.

There must be enough demand for what you plan to offer, or opening your business doesn’t make sense.

A lack of demand will lead to closing before you see any success, and you could have a mountain of debt that’s challenging to repay.

Market Saturation:

In addition to market demand, you need to consider if the market is saturated with what you plan to offer.

With a saturated market, gaining market share won’t be easy unless you offer something your competitors don’t.

You also need to consider if the competition could easily copy your idea. If so, competitors are already established, so they could take most of the market share for your idea.

Competition:

When looking at the competition, focus on what you are up against. Understand your competition, what they provide and their strengths and weaknesses.

You may be able to bring something new to the marketplace instead of just going head-to-head with the competition. Understanding what you are up against is crucial when starting a new business.

Choosing Your Location:

Ideally, you should focus on a location that balances sufficient demand with a manageable level of competition. Moreover, affordability is another crucial consideration.

While a highly populated area might provide greater exposure, you must ensure that the increased expenses won’t outweigh your profits.

Opting for cheaper rent may seem tempting, but you must ensure the location has enough customers to provide enough revenue for your yacht charter business to be profitable and survive.

In conclusion, choosing the right location with balanced supply and demand is crucial for your business’s success. Take the time to thoroughly research and analyze potential locations to make an informed decision.

For more, see the Demand for Your Products and Services and Choosing The Best Location for Your Business.

b.) Target Audience

Understanding your target audience is crucial for the success of your yacht charter business.

Here are the key benefits:

  • Tailored Products and Services: By comprehensively understanding your target audience, you can tailor your products and services to meet their specific needs and preferences. This customization increases the likelihood of customer satisfaction and loyalty.
  • Efficient Resource Allocation: Knowing your target audience enables you to allocate resources more efficiently. Instead of investing in a broad range of products and services, you can focus your resources on areas that are most relevant and valuable to your customers, optimizing your operational efficiency.
  • Effective Marketing Strategies: A deep understanding of your target audience allows you to develop more targeted and effective marketing strategies. You can tailor your messaging, channels, and promotions to resonate with your audience, maximizing the impact of your marketing efforts and increasing customer acquisition.
  • Improved Customer Relationships: When you understand your target audience, you can build stronger and more meaningful relationships with your customers. By anticipating their needs and preferences, you can deliver personalized experiences and exceptional customer service, fostering long-term loyalty and advocacy.

Target Market Ideas:

  • Luxury travelers seeking exclusive experiences
  • Corporate clients looking for unique team-building or client entertainment opportunities
  • Couples searching for romantic getaways or honeymoon experiences
  • Event planners organizing weddings, parties, or corporate events
  • Tourists interested in exploring coastal destinations through yacht excursions
  • Fishing enthusiasts seeking offshore fishing adventures
  • Business executives in need of private transportation for meetings or events
  • Travel agencies catering to high-end clientele
  • Resort and hotel operators looking to offer yacht charter packages to guests
  • Concierge services providing luxury experiences to affluent clients.

4. Looking Startup and Operating Cost:

Understanding the financial aspect of your business and making good decisions based on the facts are crucial factors in succeeding.

You will struggle to manage a successful operation without investing the time and effort necessary to understand the financials of your yacht charter business.

This section has a lot to cover, and these are critical steps in starting and operating your business.

The section is broken up into the following:

a.) Start-up Cost:

In this step, we will look at the importance of getting accurate estimates and a simple list to help you understand your needs.

b.) Monthly Expenses:

Expenses must be monitored, or the operation could be jeopardized. A sample list of monthly expenses is provided, which can be used to generate ideas for your setup.

c.) Best  Practices

Well take a look at what you can do to ensure you are always on top of the financial well being of your operation.

Let’s get started!

a.) Start-Up Costs:

Accurately estimating startup costs is crucial for a smooth planning process and successful opening. Underestimation can lead to financial issues, while overestimation may deter potential investors due to perceived high risk.

Factors influencing costs include business model, operation size, location, employee hiring, equipment purchase, and rental expenses.

Begin by listing all necessary items and researching prices. Additional expenses may emerge during research, so be thorough.

Sample estimates can provide insights, but exact costs vary due to individual setups. Each business has unique variables, making it essential to conduct comprehensive research for accurate estimates.

This process determines the viability of starting a yacht charter business.

Monthly expenses may include significant loan payments, marketing campaigns, and ongoing maintenance and repairs. Other typical costs encompass utilities, payroll, and general operating expenses.

Maintaining optimal operational levels while handling revenue fluctuations necessitates keeping expenses minimal without compromising quality, customer service, or productivity.

Striking this balance ensures sustainable business operations and financial stability.

Sample List of Monthly Expenses for a Mid-Sized Yacht Charter Business

Again, the purpose of the list below is to focus on the items in the list more than the numbers. The numbers are a general idea, and your numbers will differ.

5. Create Your Mission Statement

A mission statement serves as a guiding principle for a yacht charter business, articulating its purpose and primary value proposition.

It defines the main benefit the business aims to provide to its customers and community, helping to stay focused and aligned with its objectives.

This statement acts as a compass, ensuring that business decisions and actions remain consistent with its overarching goals.

Additionally, it communicates the business’s identity and values to stakeholders, including customers, employees, and investors, fostering trust and loyalty.

Ultimately, a well-crafted mission statement is essential for establishing clarity of purpose and direction in a yacht charter business.

Examples of Mission Statements for a Yacht Charter Business:

  • “To provide unforgettable luxury experiences on the open seas, delivering unparalleled hospitality and personalized service to our clients while promoting environmental stewardship and marine conservation.”
  • “Our mission is to make yachting accessible to all by offering affordable and inclusive charter experiences, fostering a community of adventure-seekers and ocean enthusiasts while promoting sustainability and responsible tourism.”
  • “At [Company Name], we are dedicated to exceeding expectations by offering exceptional yacht charter services that combine luxury, comfort, and adventure. Our mission is to create cherished memories for our clients while preserving the beauty of our oceans for future generations.”

For more, see How To Create a Mission Statement.

6. Creating A Unique Selling Proposition (USP)

A Unique Selling Proposition (USP) is a statement that identifies and communicates what sets a business apart from its competitors.

For a yacht charter business, a USP helps in pinpointing and creating distinctive features or services that make it unique in the market.

Identifying Uniqueness:

A USP helps in identifying aspects of the yacht charter business that are distinctive and appealing to potential customers.

By understanding the competitive landscape and customer preferences, businesses can pinpoint areas where they can differentiate themselves.

Creating Value:

A USP allows businesses to create value by offering something that competitors do not or cannot.

This could be through unique experiences, specialized services, innovative features, or exceptional customer service.

Market Positioning:

A well-defined USP helps in positioning the yacht charter business in the market.

It communicates the business’s value proposition clearly to customers, helping to attract the right audience and stand out among competitors.

Examples of USP for a Yacht Charter Business:

  • “Exclusive Access to Uncharted Destinations: Offering yacht charters to remote and exotic locations inaccessible to other operators, providing clients with unparalleled adventure and exploration.”
  • “Personalized Luxury Concierge Services: Tailoring every aspect of the charter experience to meet the unique preferences and desires of each client, ensuring a truly customized and unforgettable journey.”
  • “Sustainability and Eco-Friendly Practices: Commitment to environmentally responsible practices, such as carbon-neutral voyages, marine conservation initiatives, and eco-friendly yacht designs, appealing to environmentally conscious travelers.”

Since business names typically endure, it’s essential not to rush the process and ensure the chosen name aligns with your long-term vision.

Corporate Yacht Charters

A corporate yacht charter provides the perfect platform to showcase your brand. Whether you’re looking for a location for your next meeting, need a location for a corporate afterparty, or want to impress new clients, a luxury charter yacht is a sophisticated choice for your next corporate event.

Corporate yacht charters provide it all: amazing 5-star service, chef-prepared culinary options, spectacular backdrops, and the best in privacy.

Considering a yacht charter for your next corporate event? This guide offers a quick introduction.

Corporate Yacht Charters: Type of Events

A luxury yacht charter can be adapted to fit nearly any type of corporate event, including:

  • Meetings & Conferences

A charter yacht provides the perfect environment for intimate client meetings and conferences. By hosting your conference on a charter yacht, not only will you be sure to make an impression, but you can also customize your itinerary for the day. Take your guests out for a day on the water, or entertain guests near a larger meeting or venue.

Larger superyachts can accommodate 100 guests or more, with an option for onboard lodging. In terms of entertaining, you have numerous options. All yachts provide interior and exterior spaces that are ideal for entertaining clients and guests with al fresco luncheons and sunset cocktail hours.

Plus, your yacht can be transformed into a working space, with onboard Wi-Fi, telephone access and onboard workstations.

  • Product Launches

Hosting a product launch is all about creating buzz, and an A-list venue like a luxury charter yacht can help you generate social media mentions and positive PR. A yacht provides the perfect backdrop to showcase your product. Take influencers, journalists and other media on a sunset cruise before the “big reveal,” or host an afternoon luncheon for VIPs.

The onboard chef can design a menu that accentuates your brand or product, and the crew will be on-hand to provide excellent service to all your guests. Another option: Charter a yacht near a larger convention or trade show, and invite back influencers and journalists for your exclusive event.

  • Corporate Afterparties

A glitzy afterparty can be a powerful marketing tool for your business, and a luxury superyacht is the classiest of venues. A private afterparty is perfect following festivals, conventions and tradeshows and sporting events.

For example, yacht charter afterparties are popular in Cannes after the Cannes International Film Festival, and in Monaco after the Grand Prix. A private afterparty can be a great way to attract clients, following trade shows and conventions, as well.

  • Team Building & Employee Incentives

Want to reward your best salespeople, or host an unforgettable team-building cruise? A corporate yacht charter makes perfect sense. You can host a day- or weeklong cruise for an excellent team-building experience. Or host an intimate employee appreciation event on board like a cocktail hour, an overnight cruise, or upscale dinner.

Why Yacht Charters Are Perfect for Corporate Events

  • Privacy & Exclusivity

A chartered yacht provides an intimate and completely private experience. Your guests will be the only individuals welcomed aboard, and the docking location can be selected for seclusion. Plus, you can take to the water for added privacy.

  • Custom Menus & Service

No need to work with caterers! You’ll have access to an onboard chef who can craft a menu that fits your event perfectly. Whether you prefer an intimate dinner, or prefer hors d’oeuvres, your chef can make it happen. Plus, you’ll have an onboard crew to make your guests feel welcome.

  • Comfortable Accommodations

Luxury yachts are designed for maximum comfort, and most are remodeled every few years. That means you can expect modern furnishings and décor. Plus, there’s plenty of spaces to entertain: Sundecks, aft decks, interior saloons, dining rooms, entertainment rooms.

Finally, if you’re hosting a multi-day event, the staterooms and cabins aboard a yacht offer the best-of-the-best in accommodations.

  • Convenience

When hiring a yacht for your corporate event, you have a team in place that’s there to serve you: A captain to design your itinerary, a chef, interior service crews, and exterior crews. That means you don’t have to coordinate between multiple vendors to host your event.

Not to mention, every detail is flexible, from the yacht’s location to the menus and guestlists.

Imagine embarking on a luxurious vessel with your colleagues. It is surrounded by stunning ocean views as you work together towards a common goal. This unique experience creates a sense of unity, camaraderie, and motivation within the team.

But the perks don’t stop there. So, it’s time to set sail and discover the key advantages of corporate yacht charter in your next team-building event.

Get ready to elevate your team’s performance and make unforgettable memories. Are you ready to embark on this incredible voyage? Let’s dive in.

1. Exclusive and Private Setting

The luxurious and intimate environment of a yacht creates a unique and upscale atmosphere. This makes employees feel appreciated and valued. This setting also allows team members to bond and connect in a more intimate and relaxed setting, away from the pressures of the office.

With the privacy of a yacht, team-building activities and discussions can be carried out in a confidential and distraction-free environment. This creates a sense of exclusivity and importance for the team, leading to a stronger sense of camaraderie and teamwork. Additionally, the beautiful backdrop of the open ocean enhances the experience and can inspire creativity and innovation among team members.

2. Ample Space and Amenities

The spacious deck areas allow for team activities and games, fostering unique bonding and communication. Additionally, the luxurious amenities on board provide a relaxing and comfortable atmosphere for employees to unwind and get to know each other outside of the office. The on-board facilities are such as:

  • state-of-the-art technology
  • gourmet catering
  • comfortable seating areas

All these ensure that employees can work and play in a high-end and professional environment. This creates a unique and memorable experience for team members, enhancing team cohesion and morale.

3. Foster a Spirit of Teamwork

The serene and luxurious setting of a yacht creates an ideal environment for individuals to bond and work together toward a common goal. The challenges and activities on board encourage team members to communicate, problem-solve, and trust one another. Additionally, the exclusivity of the yacht allows individuals to step away from their daily work routines.

Plus, they can truly focus on team dynamics, creating a stronger sense of unity and cooperation among team members. The experience on a yacht charter helps to instill a lasting spirit of teamwork that can be carried back to the workplace. This leads to improved collaboration, productivity, and success within the company.

4. Relaxed Interactions and Breaking down Barriers

By being out on the water, away from the office and traditional work setting, employees are able to let their guard down and interact with each other in a more natural and comfortable way. This helps to break down barriers and build stronger relationships between team members.

By hiring a captain for the yacht, employees can focus on team-building activities and networking, without the added stress of navigating the boat. So, for a successful and memorable team-building event, it’s important to hire a captain and set sail on a corporate yacht charter.

Boost Team Morale and Cohesion With a Corporate Yacht Charter

Corporate yacht charters offer an unforgettable luxury experience for team-building events. From fostering teamwork and communication to promoting relaxation and rejuvenation, these charters offer a wide range of benefits that can enhance any corporate retreat.

Types of Yachts: Exploring Your Options

What are the different types of yachts available for charter and what factors should you consider when choosing the right one for your voyage? When it comes to yacht chartering, there is a wide range of options to consider. Yachts come in various sizes, from small to large, each offering its own advantages and disadvantages. Motor yachts, for example, provide the convenience of speed and power, allowing you to easily explore different destinations . However, they can be more expensive to operate and maintain. On the other hand, sailing yachts offer the allure of wind-powered voyages, providing a more authentic and eco-friendly experience. They may require more skill to operate, but can offer a sense of serenity and connection to nature. Luxury yachts, as the name suggests, offer extravagant amenities and unparalleled comfort. From jacuzzis and helipads to gourmet kitchens and spacious lounges, these yachts are designed to provide the ultimate in indulgence. Lastly, when choosing a yacht design, you must consider whether to opt for a catamaran or a monohull . Catamarans offer stability and spaciousness, while monohulls provide better performance and a traditional sailing experience. Ultimately, the right yacht for your voyage depends on your personal preferences, budget, and desired experience.

Planning Your Itinerary: Destinations and Routes

When planning your yacht charter itinerary, it is essential to carefully consider the destinations and routes you wish to explore. Whether you prefer a leisurely cruise or an adventurous sail, there are endless options to discover hidden gems around the world.

Time management is crucial when planning your itinerary. Research the distance between destinations and factor in travel time to ensure a well-paced journey. It is also important to allocate enough time at each stop to fully experience the local culture and attractions.

Budgeting is another key aspect to consider. Some destinations may have higher docking fees or require additional permits, so it is important to plan accordingly. Keep in mind that some areas offer more affordable options for provisioning and fueling, which can help manage costs.

One of the highlights of yacht chartering is indulging in local cuisine. Explore restaurants, markets, and street food vendors along your chosen route to savor the flavors of the region. Immerse yourself in the local culture by trying traditional dishes and experiencing the vibrant dining scene.

Respecting the Yacht and Its Facilities

Adhering to proper etiquette is essential when it comes to respecting the yacht and its facilities during your charter experience. Whether you’re a first-time charterer or a seasoned sailor, it’s important to be mindful of the maintenance expectations set by the yacht’s crew. This includes keeping the yacht clean and tidy, and reporting any damages or issues promptly.

When it comes to watersports etiquette, it’s crucial to be respectful of other guests and the marine environment. Avoid excessive noise and be mindful of speed limits and no-wake zones. Additionally, follow eco-friendly practices by not throwing any trash or waste overboard and using designated areas for fueling and waste disposal.

Proper use of onboard amenities is also important. Treat the yacht’s facilities with care and respect. Follow any guidelines provided by the crew for using the swimming pool, hot tub, or gym equipment. Take care not to damage or misuse any equipment or appliances.

Lastly, handling personal belongings is crucial to maintaining a seamless charter experience. Keep personal items organized and avoid leaving them in common areas. Use designated storage spaces and be mindful of others’ personal space.

Following Safety Protocols and Guidelines

  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols and guidelines to maintain a secure and well-organized yacht charter experience. Safety is paramount when it comes to enjoying a yacht charter. To ensure a seamless experience, it is essential to follow all safety protocols and guidelines. Here are some key areas to focus on:
  • Emergency procedures: Familiarize yourself with the emergency procedures onboard the yacht. Know the location of emergency exits, fire extinguishers, and first aid kits. In the event of an emergency, remain calm and follow the instructions of the crew.
  • Evacuation protocols: Understand the evacuation protocols and know where the life rafts are located. Familiarize yourself with the procedures for launching and boarding the life rafts, should the need arise.
  • Life jacket usage: Wear a life jacket whenever you are on the deck or participating in water activities . Ensure that the life jacket fits properly and is fastened securely.
  • Fire safety measures: Follow all fire safety measures and guidelines provided by the crew. This includes not smoking in restricted areas and being cautious when using electrical equipment.
  • Navigation rules: Observe the navigation rules and guidelines to maintain a safe environment for everyone on board. This includes respecting other vessels’ right of way, maintaining a safe distance, and adhering to speed limits.

Being Mindful of Noise Levels and Privacy

When it comes to yacht charter etiquette, it is important to be mindful of noise levels and respect the privacy of others on board. Cabin decorum plays a crucial role in creating a harmonious environment for everyone. Noise restrictions are often in place to ensure a peaceful experience for all passengers. It is essential to adhere to these guidelines and keep noise levels to a minimum, especially during quiet hours.

Respecting privacy boundaries is equally important. Remember that even though you may be sharing a yacht with others, everyone deserves their personal space. Avoid intruding on others’ cabins without permission, and be mindful of their need for solitude. If you need to discuss something important or have a gathering, consider using common areas instead of disturbing others in their private quarters.

To enhance privacy and minimize noise disruption, yacht charters often invest in soundproofing measures. These can include insulated walls and doors to minimize sound transmission between cabins. By being conscious of noise levels and respecting privacy boundaries, you contribute to a more enjoyable and seamless experience for all on board.

Proper Dining and Table Manners

To ensure a seamless yacht charter experience, it is crucial to practice proper dining and table manners, maintaining the same level of mindfulness and respect as demonstrated in previous subtopics. Dining on a yacht requires a certain level of etiquette to create an enjoyable atmosphere for all guests. Here are some key points to keep in mind:

  • Seating arrangements: Follow the guidance of the crew when it comes to seating arrangements. Wait for the host or hostess to indicate where you should sit, and avoid switching seats without permission.
  • Utensil usage: Start with the outermost utensils and work your way in as each course is served. Use the appropriate utensils for each dish, and remember to hold them properly.
  • Napkin etiquette: Place your napkin on your lap as soon as you are seated. Use it to wipe your mouth and hands discreetly, and remember to place it neatly on the table when you leave.
  • Proper use of glassware: Familiarize yourself with the different types of glassware and their purposes. Use the appropriate glass for each beverage, and hold it by the stem to avoid smudging the glass.
  • Polite conversation topics: Engage in pleasant and light-hearted conversation. Avoid controversial or sensitive topics to maintain a harmonious atmosphere.

Tipping and Showing Appreciation to the Crew

Showing appreciation to the crew on a yacht charter is best done by generously tipping for their exceptional service. When it comes to gratuity expectations, it is customary to tip between 10-20% of the total charter cost. However, if the crew has gone above and beyond to ensure your comfort and enjoyment, it is perfectly acceptable to tip more.

In addition to monetary gratuity, there are other crew appreciation gestures that can show your gratitude. For example, taking the time to write a thank-you note or providing glowing feedback to the charter company can go a long way in recognizing their hard work.

Handling special requests is another area where the crew’s dedication and professionalism shine. Whether it’s arranging a surprise celebration, accommodating dietary restrictions, or organizing a special excursion, the crew’s ability to fulfill these requests with a smile is truly commendable.

Open and clear communication with the crew is crucial for a seamless experience. From discussing your preferences before the charter to addressing any concerns or needs during the trip, maintaining a respectful and friendly rapport with the crew ensures that they can provide you with the best possible service.

Lastly, recognizing exceptional service is important. If a crew member has gone above and beyond their duties, expressing your appreciation directly to them can make their day. It could be a simple compliment, a small gift, or even a handwritten note to show your gratitude for their outstanding efforts.

In the realm of yacht charters, adhering to proper etiquette is crucial for a seamless and enjoyable experience. By respecting the crew, following safety protocols, and understanding the importance of privacy, guests can create a harmonious environment onboard. Additionally, dressing appropriately, observing table manners, and showing appreciation through tipping are all essential aspects of yacht charter etiquette. By embracing these guidelines, guests can ensure a memorable and refined journey on the open seas.

Captain Steve is simply AMAZING!!! Was a great time sailing with him for my birthday, along with my best group of friends on-board. He takes just as good of care with his boat as he does with his clients, and is super accommodating. *The boat was very clean, spacious, and had everything we needed. Had a microwave and stove! Lots of space on the table and seating around it. *Location of the boat was VERY CONVENIENT!! Had a parking lot with lots of space and the marina also had ice (great when you have a cooler/in need of ice for drinks). TIP: Captain Steve was really kind in offering to help us with our cooler, and offered to bring a cart/wagon to put the cooler on to make it easier to bring on the walk to where the boat is docked. *Captain Steve: Not only was he informative about the areas, but he was also a pleasure to have a conversation with. My friends and I had a fantastic experience and enjoyed our time sailing and relaxing , and will definitely sail with captain Steve again this summer!

Captain Steve hosted us for a wonderful private sunset sail as a surprise for my husband's 40th birthday and the entire experience exceeded expectations. From the moment I reached out to inquire, Captain Steve was extremely responsive and shared ideas about where to sail. When we arrived, he welcomed us onto his boat as if we were old friends, inviting us to make ourselves at home. Everything was extremely clean and spacious for our group of 6. We brought dinner and had plenty of room to set up below deck. We left all our worries at the dock as we set sail with Captain Steve on the Long Island Sound. I would highly recommend Captain Steve for any sailing adventure and can't wait to book our next sail!

Captain Steve took us out on the boat for an afternoon last summer and we had the best time! Captain Steve was knowledgeable when we asked him questions and allowed us to enjoy the beautiful day on the water with our friends. Looking forward to going out on the water again this summer!

Had a great experience! Fun, knowledgeable, and safe. Steve is an ideal captain with a lot of experience. Would highly recommend!

Last summer I went sailing with Captain Steve and a group of friends. We all had a great time and agreed that Steve was easy going and personable. From booking the reservation to docking at the end of our trip everything was stress free and Steve was responsive and helpful! We all can't wait to go back and sail with him again this summer

We had an awesome sail with Captain Steve, the sound was filled with a good breeze and he made the experience on the water a fun one. My family will be back again for another adventure this spring and summer for sure...

Timmerman Yachts was founded in 2003 and named after Franz Timmerman (1644-1702) who introduced Dutch boat building methods to Russia in the 17th century. Timmerman is credited with convincing Peter the First of both the importance and the charm of maritime affairs and he was entrusted with the construction of great fleets of both naval and trading vessels. As well as forging links between two Great European Embassies, Franz Timmerman was also able to arrange for Tsar Peter to study at the Amsterdam boat yards where the Tsar got his "Certificate of Timmerman" as ship joiner.

The yachting company continues this very successful Russian-Dutch partnership, with more than 1000 people who studied in Holland now working at Timmerman Yachts at the Moscow Shipyard in Russia. The name of Franz Timmerman, co-founder of the Russian Navy, is honoured in the title of this project. "Our aim is to build the best motor yachts from the point of view of the ratio “price-quality”, combining in them the newest technologies of European yacht-building with reliability of Russian ship-building, having military roots" -  Dmitry Mironenkov, the president of Timmerman Yachts.

Timmerman has  powerful production capabilities, broad experience, exceptional  specialist knowledge, and cooperation with the leading Dutch Naval Architects which enable them to realize the most incredible and daring ideas into their superyacht projects. The consortium enables its client to receive a luxury motor yacht with unlimited range and best consumer qualities, at an attractive price and in reasonable time. Names of the luxury yachts delivered by Timmerman include motor yacht Victoria M (2008), megayacht ALEXANDRA (2008), motor yacht Kitty (2008), New Star , (2006), M/Y Nord Star , (2005), Smile (2004) M/Y Olsten 125' ( 2004), and motor yacht Pallada (2003), Novaya Zvezda (2006).

Timmerman yachts comply with the highest shipbuilding standards: certification and supervision of DNV, MCA, Russian River Register. This kind of approach to certification provides complete compliance of yacht characteristics with international standards and allows a yacht owner to charter his yacht in any part of the world and to sell it without any difficulty.

The consortium allows its client to get a motor yacht with unlimited range and best consumer qualities, with attractive prices and in reasonable time.

At the moment the shipyard is building 17 yachts. According to the length of the yachts Timmerman Yachts is among the ten leading shipyards of the world.

Bareboat Charter in the Bahamas

Superyacht charter in the bahamas, travel tips:.

  • The Bahamas is relatively hassle-free, with minimal red tape. All travelers, including U.S. citizens, require a passport. Nassau’s Lynden Pindling International Airport implements TSA PreCheck, and Paradise Island facilitates pre-clearance for U.S. Customs and Immigration Services.
  • Private flight options are available through several fixed-base operators (FBO), like Jet Nassau and Odyssey Aviation. For a fee, the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism offers expedited services at the airport when flying commercial or transferring to the FBO from Nassau. You can also fly into George Town, Staniel Cay, Norman’s Cay, or Eleuthera.
  • A daily ferry runs from Fort Lauderdale to Grand Bahama Island, approximately three hours, but make sure it makes sense for your charter base location.
  • The Moorings can help organize travel, and brokers can recommend travel arrangements.
  • D’Offay recommends your broker organize transportation to the boat to ensure you get a reliable vehicle and driver. Minimize carrying valuables, check travel advisories, and be aware of your surroundings.

SKYFALL is currently for sale for an asking price of $29.5m

Superyacht SKYFALL is as iconic as the James Bond movie it shares its name with. Owned by an American real estate developer, the 190-foot motor yacht features a distinctive silhouette and a boatload of stand-out amenities including a panoramic sky lounge, a split-level owner’s cabin and a helipad that converts into a basketball court. As well as being highly appealing to owners, she’s a successful charter yacht that’s renowned for her ability to entertain.

SKYFALL was built by American luxury motor yacht builder Trinity Yachts in 2010 for the shipyard’s owner. “SKYFALL is the most exquisite superyacht ever delivered by Trinity Yachts and is a shining example of American craftsmanship and pride,” says Frank Grzeszczak Sr of FGI Yacht Group. “In a market where yachts of her size are rarely this versatile, SKYFALL stands out as a unique offering. With a Bahamas-friendly draft, aluminum construction, speeds exceeding 20 knots, a flexible seven-cabin layout—including a bi-level primary suite—and expansive lounges, SKYFALL sets herself apart from others in her class.”

The current owner bought her in 2018 from an American automobile tycoon and completed a full refit in 2020, including elegant, timeless interiors by designers Patrick Knowles and Even Marshall. Now, as the owner builds a new, larger, 270-foot yacht with an Italian shipyard, they’ve reluctantly put SKYFALL up for sale.

As SKYFALL enters the market with FGI , the owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, gives Forbes an exclusive look at life onboard the yacht and reveals his favorite experiences and spaces, as well as his top tips for superyacht ownership.

Trump Vs. Harris 2024 Polls: Harris Leads By 6 Points In Latest Likely Voter Survey

Viral ‘chase bank glitch’ isn’t the hack people thought it was, ‘strap in’—fed suddenly braced for a u.s. dollar ‘crisis’ that’s predicted to spark ‘total collapse’ and a ‘critical’ bitcoin price ‘tipping point’.

What initially captivated you about SKYFALL?

Owner: SKYFALL is an iconic yacht. She really has the best of all worlds. She has semi displacement which means she is fast and efficient. She also has a shallow draft that allows her to get into anchorages or ports that other similar sized boats can’t even try to get into. In the Bahamas, for example, it is typical for SKYFALL to be anchored close to shore while other 60-meter (190-foot) boats are a mile or more offshore.

What are your favourite memories onboard SKYFALL?

We have had a lot of fun with family and friends on SKYFALL. The list of great memories onboard is quite long. The bridge deck outdoor dining table is where we always try to have meals unless the weather is very bad. We have had a lot of great discussions with family and friends around that table that will last a lifetime. We also like that the sundeck that has two hot tubs with plenty of space, which is where we have pre-dinner canapes every night while we watch the sun set wherever we might be.

One thing that often grabs people’s attention is the basketball goal that also is a helideck on the sundeck. We have had a lot of competitive games of basketball on sundeck, sometimes with a number of spectators watching from afar.

The top deck of SKYFALL features a basketball court, helipad, pool, hot tub and dining area

What is your favourite space onboard?

The sky lounge is group favorite. It has twin 80-inch TVs, so there isn’t a bad place in the sky lounge to view a game.

Please talk us through the owner’s cabin and how you designed it to suit your lifestyle.

The owner’s cabin on SKYFALL is exactly what we wanted on a boat. The master bed faces the bow with large windows which means we get to wake up every morning to an amazing view. The sitting area is perfect for getting a break from guests when we just need some time to ourselves. The suite also has ‘His and Hers’ separate baths and closets, which is a requirement for us. My wife and I always say that the key to a long and happy marriage is separate bathrooms and closets.

The office in the master suite is a welcome retreat for me so I can get work done privately without being disturbed, and more importantly, without waking up my wife.

A cabin onboard SKYFALL superyacht

Where are your favourite places to visit around the world?

It has always been non-negotiable for our family that we spend New Year’s together in Saint Bart’s on the boat. In early spring, she spends a few weeks in the Bahamas, and then typically we send her over to the Med for the summer season. She then comes back for a quick yard period in the fall, does the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, and then makes her way back to the Caribbean.

What makes SKYFALL such a successful charter yacht?

The feedback from charter guests has been that this is a great multi-generational boat. We have all the fun toys for kids, and lots of relaxing spaces for adults. Three generations in a family can travel together and have a great trip for different reasons. With the multitude of large beds, it is also a great boat for several couples to travel together.

Interiors are elegant and timeless

What first inspired you to become a yacht owner?

Our family had been chartering yachts for about 12 years. More and more we found ourselves wanting to spend time on the water. We had been loosely talking about buying a yacht when we started attending the annual Fort Lauderdale Boat Show. I’m not an impulse buyer, but when we found a boat that we thought would work for our lifestyle, we knew (or rather, my wife knew) that was the boat for us.

What does yacht ownership give you that villa or a hotel ownership couldn’t?

We often talk about how owning a yacht allows you to basically have a home nearly anywhere in the world. We like new places, and we like to explore, but we like to have a familiar home base to come back to at the end of a long day. A yacht gives you the advantage of being in the Med in the summer and the Caribbean in the winter sleeping in the same bed every night.

Guests can enjoy indoor and outdoor dining areas

Why have you decided to put SKYFALL on the sales market – and why now?

We are building a new boat, and it is time to let this one go. We are sad to part with her, but we hope she will find a new family that will create many new memories on her as we have.

What would be your biggest piece of advice to the next owner of SKYFALL?

Have fun with her. That’s what she is for. This boat loves to be used so if you have a destination in mind, she’s ready to go.

The decks have plenty of space for entertainment and relaxation

Want to be the new owner of SKYFALL? Here’s how

SKYFALL is currently for sale for an asking price of $29,500,000. Interested parties should contact the broker, Frank Grzeszczak Sr, Founder & President at FGI Yacht Group , who says: “Simply put, SKYFALL is the finest American superyacht available today. The price has recently been adjusted to $29,500,000, reflecting the seller's commitment to securing a fair price for this extraordinary vessel.”

I lived ‘below deck’ on a luxury yacht — here’s what you need to know.

Tahiti, St. Thomas and the French Riviera — I’ve yachted in all of these exotic locales, albeit from the comfort of my couch. And, millions of Americans are in the same boat.

In 2013, “Below Deck,” introduced the masses to the most glamorous mode of traveling: yachting. Since then, it’s become a Bravo mainstay with Season 9 of “Below Deck Mediterranean’’ premiering in June.

But how real is the reality show? I spent five nights on a yacht in Croatia to find out.

A woman in a bikini standing on the deck of the 'Adriatic Escape' boat, ready to experience reality TV drama on the high seas in Maldives.

A tip on tipping

My suitcase wasn’t bursting with Benjamins. An agency at your final destination provides cash for the crew’s tip money. While you’re expected to tip $30,000 for a two-night cruise on “Below Deck,” in real life you only have to tip 10% to 15% of your charter fee. That’s about $10,000 for a two-night cruise on a 180-foot charter yacht like Mustique (from $250,000 a week), which stars in the new season.

According to Zvonimir Androić, president of the yacht charter company Via Croatia, more often than not, the tip comes from what’s left over after provisioning.

So, shun the Dom Pérignon and skip the beluga caviar, and you’ll have money to spare.

What’s up, dock?

A luxury yacht, named Adriatic Escape, docked at Split Marina with a weekly rental price of US$52,800

In real life, “Below Deck’s” favorite commercial-break cliff-hanger isn’t nearly as dramatic. Docking in our yacht, Via Croatia’s five-cabin, 100-foot Adriatic Escape (from $52,800 a week), was breezy.

I asked the crew if they hated setting up the slide — a tortuous, Herculean task if you believe what you see on TV.

“It’s not that bad,” a twentysomething Croatian deckhand, as cute as his on-screen counterparts, told me. “That said, we’re definitely not sad if you don’t ask for it.”

Play it cool

Barbie Pascual arranging a table on the set of Below Deck Season 11.

Despite being served meat on more than one occasion, my vegetarian co-guests on board weren’t divas when it came to cuisine — a major source of chef-related stress on the show.

Tantrums aren’t the norm Barbie Pascual, the “Below Deck” stewardess famous for putting up with former “RHONY” star Jill Zarin’s demands for the perfect Diet Coke in the “Real Housewives of Grenada” episode, tells me. “Guests know they are being filmed so their reactions are more extreme than they’d be if the cameras weren’t around,” she says.

Pascual’s biggest tip for first-time yachters? Don’t go skinny dipping, like they do on the show, after dark.

“People forget about currents, sharks, etc.,” she says. “Jumping in the water should always be with the captain’s consent!”

Our humorless Croatian yacht captain was a far cry from “Below Deck Mediterranean’s” affable Captain Sandy Yawn. I think we only saw him twice over the course of four days, and he definitely didn’t join us for dinner.

That was fine by us because the stews and deckhands were always handy with anything we needed — including at chat.

Asking for it

A group of people on the Adriatic Escape boat, available for weekly rent at $52,800

“No” is a word you’ll never hear on a yacht, unless there is a safety issue, Pascual says.

While we didn’t ask our crew to do a striptease or decorate for ‘70s night (two recurring requests on the show), out-there demands aren’t out of the question, as long as you’re willing to pay for it.

For example, Via Croatia is currently retrofitting one of its multimillion-dollar superyachts for an upcoming charter booked by a multigenerational Jewish family from Florida.

“In addition to paying the charter fee, the client is literally buying everything new: pots, pans, silverware, et cetera,” said Androić. “They’re even spending $30,000 on a new tender for the elderly mother-in-law.”

Now, I’m no reality show producer, but a picky primary trying to keep his wife, her elderly mom and their kosher kids happy at sea has the makings of an Emmy Award-winning episode.

Yachting on a budget

Agape Rose, an ultra luxury mini cruiser yacht with various amenities, sailing on Croatia's Adriatic coast.

Charters are cheapest at the beginning and end of a destination’s season. Via Croatia’s yuppiest yacht, the 160-foot, 12-cabin Agape Rose , fetches $200,000 a week in July and August. But it’s just $164,000 a week in April and October. Divide that by 24 of your closest friends and family and it’s just $6,800 a person.

If that’s still too much, consider booking a yacht club suite on one of MSC Cruises ’ Mediterranean voyages.

Sure, you’ll be on a cruise liner, but for $1,659 a person you’ll be treated to seven nights of private butler service with a private pool and restaurant that the pleb passengers don’t even know exists.

Missing revealed as divers search superyacht that sank in storm off Sicily

ROME — Rescue teams and divers were searching Tuesday for six missing people, including a British tech magnate and a Morgan Stanley boss, after a luxury superyacht sank in a storm off Sicily .

The identity of those still missing emerged after an initial search of the 184-foot sailboat, named the Bayesian, was unsuccessful Monday. The British-flagged tourist vessel had 22 people aboard when it sank because of “a violent storm” off Sicily’s main city, Palermo, around 5 a.m. local time (11 p.m. ET) on Monday, the local coast guard said.

Newly released video shows the moment the vessel suddenly sank after being battered by the storm. In the video, the 250-foot mast, which was lit up and lashed by the storm, appears to bend to one side before it disappears and is replaced by darkness.

The grainy images obtained by NBC News and other outlets were recorded on closed-circuit television not far from where the Bayesian was anchored.

Fifteen people were rescued by a boat present in the immediate vicinity and then brought ashore by coast guard vessels, but six passengers, including American, British and Canadian citizens, remained missing, it said. They were believed to be trapped in the boat's hull, some 164 feet underwater, posing a challenge to divers who returned Tuesday to the site off Porticello, near Palermo.

Salvatore Cocina, director of Sicily’s Civil Protection Agency, told NBC News that the missing include British tech magnate Mike Lynch and his daughter, Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife.

Cocina did not specify the nationalities of the missing. He also did not identify Lynch's daughter or the wives of Bloomer and Morvillo.

A spokesperson for Clifford Chance, where Morvillo works as a lawyer, confirmed to NBC News on Tuesday that he and his wife, Neda, were among the missing.

Aki Hussain, chief executive officer of U.K. insurance company Hiscox, where Bloomer is a nonexecutive chairman, confirmed to NBC News on Tuesday that Bloomer and his wife, Judy, were missing.

Missing tourists after Italy boat sank off the coast of Palermo

Italy’s national fire department said that its divers were able to get inside the wreck during a late-night dive Monday, inspecting some cabins under the bridge, but were having trouble navigating because of obstructions and narrow access gates. One of those obstructions was reported to have been caused by furniture from the cabins that moved during the storm that struck the ship early Monday.

Rescuers said that there might be bodies inside the cabins, especially considering the timing of the storm, but that they had so far been unable to check through the ship’s portholes.

Divers were forced to work in 12-minute underwater search shifts because of the depth, while surface searches continued in the area of the shipwreck with a helicopter and a fire brigade boat, it added.

Mike Lynch, who was regularly described in U.K. media as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” was cleared of fraud charges in a blockbuster U.S. trial earlier this summer. Sources told CNBC on Monday that his wife, Angela Bacares, has been rescued. Italian news agency ANSA identified his daughter, missing alongside her father, as Hannah, 18.

Just days earlier, Lynch's co-defendant, Stephen Chamberlain, died after being “fatally struck by a car” while out running Saturday, his lawyer Gary Lincenberg said in an emailed statement.

Divers operate in the sea to search for the missing after a luxury yacht sank off Sicily

The sailing vacation that ended in tragedy appeared to be something of a celebration after Lynch’s acquittal — Morvillo was one of Lynch’s U.S. lawyers and Bloomer testified in his defense.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event. Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our Chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing,” Hussain, the Hiscox CEO, said in an emailed statement.

A Morgan Stanley spokesperson also said: “Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular the Bloomer family, as we all wait for further news from this terrible situation.”

The Eve Appeal, a British cancer charity, described Judy Bloomer in an emailed statement as “a brilliant champion for women’s health and medical research.”

Britain's Marine Accident Investigation Branch said it was deploying a team of four inspectors to Palermo to conduct a preliminary assessment.

The coast guard said in a statement Monday that the ship’s cook had died. It did not give his nationality. Reuters identified him as Antiguan citizen Ricardo Thomas.

One of the survivors, identified as Charlotte Emsley, 35, told the Italian news agency ANSA that she had momentarily lost hold of her year-old daughter, Sofia, in the water but managed to retrieve her and hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were pulled to safety.

Italian rescue review blueprints of sunken yacht in photos released on Aug 19. 2024.

Built by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered, Bayesian can carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist yacht sites.

The yacht’s nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.

Luca Mercalli, an Italian climatologist and president of the country’s meteorological society, told Reuters that the storm could have involved a waterspout, essentially a tornado over water, or a downburst, a more frequent phenomenon that doesn’t involve the rotation of the air.

Storms and heavy rainfall have swept Italy in recent days after weeks of scorching heat.

“The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit), which is almost 3 degrees more than normal,” Mercalli said. “This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms.”

Claudio Lavanga reported from Rome and Yuliya Talmazan from London.
