What Is “Fender” on a Yacht / Boat
Fenders are a common name for several types of protective devices that protect the hull of a yacht or boat from damage at the time of mooring, joint mooring alongside other vessels, during anchorage at the docks and similar situations.
They are placed as a shock-absorbing buffer between the hull of the vessel and other hard surfaces: metal, concrete, hardwood. The fenders dampen impact energy from a collision and protect the coating from friction, scratches and chips.
If you are already a yacht owner, then most likely you are already familiar with what fenders are, but if you are just planning to buy a boat, we will be happy to help you figure this out.
In non-equipped docks, in bays with strong tidal waves or frequent sea waves, there is a high probability of damage to the side coating against the walls of the pier or quay. Mooring without fenders is a difficult and risky task, both for your boat and for those around you.
Therefore, since time immemorial, sailors have used various protective devices both on the vessel itself and on the piers. Once upon a time, these were wicker baskets with rags or seaweed and logs wrapped with ropes. But the progress has given us a number of materials like rubber, PVC or polystyrene that have replaced the old school equipment.
Kinds and Types of Fenders
There are different types of fenders for different purposes. They differ in dimensions, cost, design, fastening methods and the material from which they are made.
Fender Types
Inflatable fenders for sale are usually made of PVC or rubber. Can be used as pontoon floating pads between two boats during rafting-up. When folded, they take up very little space. They tolerate the sun, contact with petroleum products, temperature changes.
PVC inflatable fenders are the most popular and in demand among yachtsmen, private shipowners and sportsmen. They are made from polyvinyl chloride of different strengths, which gives manufacturers great opportunities to combine types of PVC and, for example, make the edges and fasteners rigid and durable, and the main part of the body elastic and shock-absorbing. Durable and wear-resistant, suitable for long hikes, difficult conditions and intense loads.
It is most actively used in the form of flat slabs-sandwiches where it acts as a "stuffing". These fenders are versatile and lightweight, often used on catamarans with a flat transom. They allow you to combine them together - you can make a real full shell to protect the boat. More short-lived than the previous ones and tolerate UV exposure worse. But there are also polyurethane foam plates sheathed with PVC fabric - these are more durable and will last longer.
Fenders also differ in shape and purpose. Side fenders can be of the following shape:
- Round, spherical fenders. It is recommended to have at least one such product on a medium sized boat. Their popularity is due to the large diameter, which means greater reliability and protection against damage. Many people prefer to play it safe and take fenders with a margin. Often they are placed along the side in the bow or stern, but such fenders are multi-purpose and have several uses.
Elongated, cylindrical shape. They often have two mounting rings for vertical or horizontal installation. But there are also products with a through hole with the cable passed through the whole fender’s body.
Their elongated shape helps to cover most of the freeboard and thus secure the ship when it sails along with the tides at fixed piers. The greater length will protect when mooring next to a larger vessel or vice versa of a smaller one. Very widespread and well-deservedly popular.
Plates, flat fenders of various parameters from very small gaskets to very large plates. Very helpful when mooring to corners and uneven objects.
Versatile, used in calm conditions and in equipped floating docks, can be used even on large yachts. You can combine several of these plates together. Sometimes used as seats in ship's boats. Bending plates and additionally reinforced plates are available.
- Fenders with steps. You also come across very unusual types of dampers in the form of steps or even a ladder. But when you stand side-to by the pontoon and, in addition, the yacht has a high side, then such a contraption comes in handy. At the same time, they perform all the protective functions of a fender and can also be mounted on a flat stern, at an angle.
As for the bow and corner fenders:
- There are several types of fenders to protect the stem. There are options available in the shape of a three-dimensional boomerang, used on older types of boats and it is usually attached to the very top. In this case, you need to know exactly where the point of impact will be, so you should either use it for well-known mooring places, or mount several pieces at once.
- V-shaped corner for almost the entire length of the stem. Usually used on boats with narrow bows or with a moderate bend, fastened to the cleats with cables. Most often inflatable, are made of impact-resistant durable PVC - especially worth paying attention to if you plan to use your yacht as a tugboat.
- Multi-purpose multifenders - this is a plate made up of flexible segmented parts, which allows it to bend to the required angle for the bow of a particular vessel.
And as for the stern fenders:
On many modern sailing yachts, a transom is at the stern or a bathing platform is installed there. In the case of mooring in the Mediterranean, the skippers use oblong thick corner-shaped fenders. Unlike the bow ones, they are located horizontally, are more voluminous and have additional stiffening ribs. Pear-shaped fenders or multipurpose fenders work well too.
By Place of the Attachment
The attachment point is largely dictated by the shape of the fender, the varieties of which are described above. Fenders for sale can be successfully attached to:
- sides of the boat;
- bow of a boat;
- boat stairs;
- mooring piles;
- dead weight anchors.
It is worth mentioning that it is inflatable fenders that exist as a kind of protection for any part of the vessel - they can be attached anywhere and you can even replace and switch them during maneuvers. They are actively used and loved because they weigh very little, are easily transported by land and can be quickly moved by the crew aboard the ship. When deflated, they are compact and can be stored anywhere. They are filled with air using an electric, automobile, boat pump or compressor.
In the latter case, it is worth making sure not to overpump the fender - when pressed, it should bend by 2-3 cm in order to better perform its shock-absorbing functions. Most inflatable fenders for sale are rated for 0.15-0.2 bar of pressure at 20ºC.
If the devices are permanently stored in a ready-to-use state, then it does not hurt to check the pressure 1-2 times a year, as well as when moving from a cold climate to a warm one and vice versa. Colored bumpers, especially black ones, heat up more actively in the sun and the pressure in them is stronger.
How to Properly Attach a Fender
Of course, a lot depends on individual conditions, cruising range, comfort of the berths, weather conditions and rough seas. There are no special provisions of the maritime rules governing fenders, but we have selected a number of general recommendations based on the experience of seasoned yachtsmen and boat owners.
Attachment Height
The parameters of the products are usually selected in such a way that the length of the fender, if necessary, could cover up to two-thirds of the freeboard of the ship. They are placed in such a way that the lower end touches the water, but does not float.
In the case of spherical fenders, their size can be even smaller, since the large diameter of such devices helps - for them the overlap of half the freeboard is usually enough. This largely applies to stationary berths with active tides, where elongated devices are needed.
When mooring at equipped floating piers on a 12 meter yacht, fenders 50-60 cm long are often enough. In this case they are usually attached above the waterline, just to support the buffer zone.
Near other smaller boats, two sets of fenders can be hung - one above and one below the waterline.
Distance Between Fenders
Depending on the experience of the team, fenders are installed every two or three meters of the hull length. As mooring process becomes more common for the crew, shock absorbers are needed less, but it is never a good idea to moor without them completely. A minimum of three side dampeners are required per side. A good amount for a medium sized yacht is 8 pieces. Bow fenders can stay permanently attached.
Non-standard Methods of Tying Fenders
First, let's remember about the most common way to tie fenders – using a figure-eight knot. It holds well and is easy to tie, hence its popularity.
Clove hitch is a more unusual method though and it involves a little bit more effort. Thread a rope around the body of the fender and make a loop. Then you pass the end through the loop and pull. Then start making another loop with the cable and pass it right over the top of the previous loop. After this, all you need to do is to thread the end through the second loop and pull it. Clove hitch is extremely secure and will not come undone even during storm.
There's also a bowline knot – take the rope and thread it through the fender's eye. Make a loop with the rope and then pass it over the top part of the fender. Then you need to thread the end through the second loop. Make sure to pull it tightly against the first loop – this way, the secure bowline knot is ready.
It's really up to you how which methods to use, but make sure you experiment with knots first before you go on a serious voyage.
How to Tie a Rope
Fenders are hung out with ropes and less often with chains. You can either choose very secure methods described above or go the convenient route with quickly untied knots. Quickly untied version of the knot allows you to quickly move the fenders to the other side if needed - just pull the running end and the fender is in your hands. It allows you to easily adjust the height, and if you tighten the locking knot nearby, you don’t have to worry that the fender will slip.
On the ship, the end is attached to a reliable low-lying structure: fencing posts, mooring cleats, and if the fender is light - to the rails. Many boat owner install staples to attach the ropes or use special clips.

IJE - a broker's view.
Published 21 September 2021
Senior Partner and Senior Sales Broker Peter Brown talks to Burgess News about IJE, one of nine new additions to our sales fleet .
Watch the ije video below and take the virtual tour at the bottom..
Describe IJE
The owner has a dream build team, one that has built several yachts. Each is a remarkable achievement and IJE, it's safe to say, tops them all. She is a tour de force and the longest Benetti ever built.
The briefest glance will tell you that the beautifully balanced exterior lines bear the distinctive signature of sought-after star studio RWD. The owner's team worked very closely with them to perfect the look of decks seeming to float one above the other.
Inside she has wonderfully informal beach-house style, airy, welcoming and restful, which is perfect for a family yacht. Another stamp of excellence is expert naval architecture by PierLuigi Ausonio.
Most appealing features?
In the main saloon the full-height glass walls can slide back to open the space up. The difference that makes is hard to explain but it completely changes the environment.
Sound becomes softer and you can hear the sea, the air and light change to make it a shaded outside space. The entire experience is so much more restful. It's a break-through piece of design.
The main deck aft has a good-sized pool, open-air dining, a bar, several different lounge areas including a TV lounge - everything families need to spend the day together.
There's a fully equipped lower deck gym with one of the largest sea terraces I've seen on a yacht of this size, and opposite is the tender and toy garage, which is packed with the latest kit.
She has two 12m (40ft) tenders on the foredeck to take extended families ashore together. That longer length means they're faster, more comfortable, carry more people and equipment and have better range.
There are eleven cabins for 22 guests, including a private owner's deck with walkaround sidedecks and a bedroom suite with direct access to the foredeck helipad.
An elevator connects lower to bridge decks and there is corridor access from the lower deck lobby to the beach club so that all generations of the family can enjoy step-free time together.
There's a dedicated cinema, a very private nightclub complete with fully equipped bar, lighting and sound systems and DJ station, and a bridge deck games room with access to the aft deck's firepit lounge.
The main deck has a beauty treatment room and hair salon and a massage room equipped to double as a hospital. She has everything any family could want or need for extended cruising.
Need to know?
Right from the start, she was intended to be a world-cruising family yacht, one that could take the owner and their family cruising in any part of the world, places where the weather is not always reliable. To keep everyone on board comfortable, underway or at anchor, she has two sets of Naiad stabilisers.
In more and more locations anchoring is not allowed to protect reefs and seabeds so she has been fitted with a Rolls-Royce dynamic positioning system to hold position without having to anchor.
Operating in the Mediterranean, yachts are generally well catered for and there are plenty of diversions ashore. When you get off the beaten track, which IJE was designed and built to be able to do, the infrastructure can become indifferent, distances greater, comfort and entertainment on board more important.
IJE delivers the same seven-star experience anywhere in the world. She has always been professionally maintained and was designed to facilitate regular maintenance - another benefit of built-in experience. She is a remarkable achievement and her next owner will be the first to appreciate that.

Russian sailors are practicing flying drones in swings so they can hunt Ukraine's exploding drone boats from warships on the waves
Ukraine has used naval drones to damage and destroy ships of Russia's Black Sea Fleet.
Russia has started using small FPV drones to train its sailors how to locate and defeat the threat.
It's now having sailors operate these drones while rocking back and forth on swings to mimic waves.
Russia has consistently struggled to effectively protect its Black Sea Fleet from Ukraine's arsenal of exploding naval drones, which Kyiv has used throughout the war in attacks targeting Moscow's warships.
But a new video suggests Russia's defense ministry is taking additional steps to defend its naval assets from the Ukrainian drones by putting sailors through a more realistic — albeit strange-looking — training process.
Zvezda News, a state-owned network run by Russia's defense ministry, shared footage on Wednesday that showed Russian sailors rocking back and forth on swings while piloting first-person view, or FPV, drones above the waters of the Gulf of Finland.
In the video, a Russian naval drone, also known as an uncrewed surface vessel, or USV, can be seen on the surface of the water, supposedly mimicking the Ukrainian systems that have wreaked havoc on the Black Sea Fleet.
In a Telegram statement, Zvezda said that the swinging motion is meant to familiarize sailors with the waves. The channel said drones are in "great demand" among sailors and can "effectively combat" naval drones.
Russian military sailors are learning how to fly FPVs and quadcopters as counters to Ukrainian USVs - the sitting on a swing is supposed to mimic the motion of the waves so that operators can pilot these drones in bad weather. https://t.co/WivAYjES2s pic.twitter.com/ILkFbR1VI5 — Samuel Bendett (@sambendett) August 21, 2024
Ukraine claims to have sunk, damaged, or destroyed at least a third of the Black Sea Fleet since the start of the war, according to Britain's defense ministry.
The Ukrainian military and security forces have used a combination of locally produced naval drones and anti-ship missiles during this successful campaign, which has forced the Black Sea Fleet to disperse from its headquarters in the occupied Crimean peninsula and relocate closer to Russia.
The naval drones — the main ones being the Sea Baby and Magura V5 — have been especially troublesome. Russia has taken some countermeasures to try and protect its warships, such as flying increased combat aircraft patrols, putting machine gun crews aboard its vessels, and adding more defenses in port .
Many of these labor-intensive efforts have been largely unsuccessful at curbing the threat. A more cost-effective solution for Russia to defeat Ukrainian drones could be to use its own drones.
Samuel Bendett, an advisor with the Center for Naval Analyses and an expert on drones and Russian defense issues, said Moscow has been using FPV drones in training to defeat Ukrainian naval drones for a while now.
"They're basically refining the efforts of using the most advanced technologies to look for and destroy these drones," Bendett, who pointed out the development in a post on X , told Business Insider.
While the FPV drones are cheap, attritable systems, Bendett said that they are far more dynamic than using a machine gun to simply destroy the inbound threat. Russia can use the FPV drones for a range of missions, including intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance purposes, in addition to threat elimination.
Using swings to mimic the motion of waves in adverse weather is a relatively new aspect of this training, Bendett said. However, the effectiveness of FPV drones may end up being quite limited in bad weather anyways because they're small and light and would be vulnerable to strong winds and rains.
It's not uncommon for Russia to put its soldiers through training like this. In fact, it's a practice other militaries do as well. For example, US soldiers training to defeat FPV drones are doing so by shooting at balloons flapping in wind , which is supposed to mimic the unpredictable movement of an FPV drone in combat.
FPV drones strapped with various types of explosives have been an omnipresent threat on the battlefield in Ukraine, with both sides regularly using them to carry out precision strikes on enemy armor, positions, and troops.
"What we have is this application of technology that's proven itself in ground combat. Now we have it applied on water and in maritime engagements," Bendett said.
Bendett pointed out that in the Zvezda video of the counter-drone training, Russia is using a domestically produced naval drone to mimic a Ukrainian system. This gives sailors an even more realistic training environment, as opposed to simply placing an object in the water that's only simulating a naval drone.
Little is known about Russia's naval drone program, but these systems will likely be used beyond training scenarios.
"They obviously didn't build it just so it can be a target for USVs," Bendett said. "They built it for counter-USV operations, they built it for [intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance] operations, they built it for possible combat operations — whatever that means to them and for them."

Boat Fenders & Buoys
Finding the right Boat Fenders, Buoys and accessories makes life on board easier. Fenders & Buoys come in many sizes and styles. The right size makes things easier to handle with great protection. The wrong size can be harder to handle and not offer the protection your boat deserves.
If your boat is up against the dock or another vessel without having boat bumpers in place, damage can result on the trim, railings, paint or even your hull. Top brands like Polyform and Jim Buoy make cost effective and long-lasting boat bumpers, boat fenders and buoys. Having the correct size and shape boat fenders is important to keep your boat from being damaged while dockside.
Boat buoys can be a good all-around choice as they can be cross-purposed for use as a boat bumper, or marking your anchor, mooring line, or fishing gear. Most boat buoys are inflatable which makes them easier to deflate for offseason storage. Boat fenders and boat bumpers come in either rigid or inflatable varieties and each has their merit. Inflatable fenders offer the same storage convenience as the buoys and allow you to customize the firmness. Rigid fenders are going to provide stiffer compression less of a spring or bouncing effect. For larger vessels like tugs, ships and mega yacht's we carry larger fenders . Water ski bouy mark out your slalom course and are designed not to harm boats or skiers when struck accidentally. Regulatory buoys are the waterway's traffic signals with different shapes and labels to quickly convey to boaters where to navigate. For anchoring your boat off-shore we offer a wide selection mooring bouys and the associated anchoring hardware .
Our selection of fenders, bumpers and buoys for sale allows you to select the perfect style, size, shape, and color for your unique needs. You can also find fender racks for storage, the correct marine rope for attaching your buoys and fenders and all the accessories you need to keep your boat safe from going bump in the night.

Former President Barack Obama, former first lady Michelle Obama and second gentleman Doug Emhoff were the big speakers on Tuesday at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago . The Obamas delivered an impassioned call to American voters and pledged to continue their efforts to help Vice President Kamala Harris in the final 11 weeks of her presidential campaign. Emhoff used his speech to show a personal side of Harris , who he described as the anchor of their family. While Harris skipped night two of the DNC to campaign in Milwaukee, she symbolically accepted the party’s presidential nomination after delegates at the convention held a ceremonial roll call. The speaker lineup today includes Harris’ running mate Tim Walz, former President Bill Clinton, and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

2. Chicago protests
Large protests are erupting outside the Democratic National Convention this week, including clashes with police in the streets of Chicago . Crews set up an additional line of security fences in the area on Tuesday — a day after a group of pro-Palestinian demonstrators , rallying against US support for Israel in its war against Hamas, breached a barrier near the United Center. Tuesday’s protests also saw some tense moments outside the Israeli Consulate in Chicago where protesters and police in helmets began pushing and shoving, a CNN crew observed. Hundreds of officers have taken to the streets, clearing the roadway and sidewalks. It’s unclear how many arrests had been made Tuesday but multiple people appeared to be detained by police.
Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is considering dropping out of the 2024 race and endorsing former President Donald Trump, his running mate Nicole Shanahan said in an interview Tuesday. She framed the decision as an effort to reduce “the risk” of Vice President Kamala Harris becoming president, arguing Kennedy pulls more votes from Trump than from Harris. When asked about the role Kennedy could play in a future Trump administration, Shanahan speculated that her running mate may be open to taking a role as secretary of health and human services. Trump said Tuesday he would “certainly” be open to Kennedy playing a role in his administration. This comes as new filings also show Kennedy is facing dwindling campaign resources and nearly $3.5 million in outstanding debts.
Russian authorities today accused Ukraine of launching “one of the largest ever” attempts to attack Moscow with drones. Russia said their defense systems had destroyed 45 Ukrainian drones overnight — including 11 over Moscow, two over the Belgorod border region and two in Kursk. Since the Ukrainian incursion began nearly two weeks ago, its forces are inching forward in Kursk and destroying key bridges in an effort to cripple Moscow’s logistical capabilities and disrupt supply routes. Separately, Russian authorities have urged people in the border regions to stop using dating apps and limit their use of social media to prevent Ukrainian forces from gathering intelligence as they press on with their advance.
5. Superyacht sinks
Italian authorities continued their search today for six missing people after a tornado sank a luxury yacht Monday off the coast of Sicily. Fifteen passengers were rescued from the boat shortly after it capsized, according to Italy’s Coast Guard. One body was later recovered from the hull of the stricken vessel, called the “Bayesian.” Two Americans and four Britons are among those missing — including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch , Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and Chris Morvillo, a prominent lawyer. Initial reports suggest a small waterspout, which developed over the area Monday, could have been behind the yacht’s sinking.

Morning Briefing: Asia Pacific Edition
Thursday briefing: russia says ukraine aimed drones at moscow.
Plus, China’s “road-trip auntie.”
By Justin Porter
Russia says Ukrainian drones attacked Moscow
Russia said it repelled a drone attack against Moscow yesterday, as Ukraine presses on with its offensive in Russia’s southern Kursk region. The Russian authorities did not report any damage or casualties, saying 10 Ukrainian attack drones were destroyed by the capital’s air defenses.
A Washington-based think tank said Ukraine was making marginal advances within Russia. Footage showed that Ukrainian troops had entered the outskirts of Korenevo, a town of about 5,000 people, and pushed into two more villages. Russian forces are trying to install pontoons to cross a section of the Seym River after Ukraine destroyed several bridges.
President Vladimir Putin has promised a decisive response to Ukraine’s incursion, but so far there has been more focus on containment than retaliation. Russian forces have slowed Ukraine’s advance and hardened the front line, setting up the next phase of a battle with high stakes for both sides. Instead of weakening the Kremlin, the invasion may eventually cause more Russian citizens to rally around the flag , some analysts said.
Context: Drone assaults away from the front lines have become a feature of the Russia-Ukraine war. Ukraine also said it had intercepted 50 Russian drones over its territory overnight.
Israel and Hezbollah trade strikes with talks stalled
The Israeli military and Hezbollah traded cross-border strikes yesterday, as months of diplomatic efforts have failed to ease hostilities.
Israel said that it had struck weapon-storage facilities used by Hezbollah. The strikes killed at least one person and injured 30 others, Lebanon’s Health Ministry said. Hezbollah said it had responded by targeting an Israeli base in the Golan Heights, which Israel said had caused at least one injury.
Diplomatic efforts to bring an end to the war in Gaza are at a standstill, despite hopes from the U.S. that a new proposal could break the deadlock. In broad terms, the U.S. proposal appears to conform to demands by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Israeli troops continue to patrol part of Gaza along the border with Egypt. Here’s what we know about the proposed deal .

🇺🇸 U.S. ELECTION 2024
The presidential election is less than 80 days away. This is what we’re watching.
Changing the message on Trump
Kamala Harris and her allies are crafting a new approach to Donald Trump. Democrats have portrayed him as a dangerous villain, a racist and a threat to democracy. Now, they’re trying something else — deflating him.
Harris and her allies have argued at the Democratic National Convention that Trump is a meanspirited fraud who is playing a long con on the American people. They are depicting him as a fake working man’s populist and an anti-union “scab.”
The strategy is designed not just to earn applause but to win votes, eroding Trump’s support among the undecided and mostly white middle-class voters in three states that are likely to decide the election: Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin.
On Day 3 of the convention, taking place on Wednesday night in the U.S., the jovial, blunt-spoken Tim Walz, Harris’s running mate, will speak to the largest audience of his political career, as he formally accepts the nomination for vice president. Bill Clinton is also expected to take the stage.
Here’s what else to know:
Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, are in North Carolina for Trump’s first outdoor rally since an assassination attempt. He will be shielded by bulletproof glass .
The ascension of Harris has unleashed a gusher of political donations to Democrats .
Michelle Obama’s militaristic sleeveless outfit suggests this election will be a fight , our fashion critic writes.

Four years ago Su Min left home, an abusive marriage and started a solo road trip across China. Since then, she’s become an internet sensation and an accidental icon of women’s awakening across the country.
But she never filed for divorce — until a month ago. Her husband refused at first, and a legal fight loomed.
