10 Best Marine Weather Apps for Boaters

best marine weather apps

There are helpful marine navigation apps that make it easier to get from point A to point B, and there are fishing apps that will boost your catch rate, but another variety of app that all boaters need to know about are marine weather apps.

These can help you avoid rough seas, dodge storms, and choose destinations with favorable winds and calm conditions. Ready to get started? Grab your phone, and check out these 10 top contenders.

Best Boating Apps: Navigation, Fishing, Weather & More

Missing media item.

1. Buoyweather

Buoyweather is a longtime favorite of boaters for its easy navigation, solid accuracy, and map location-based forecasts. Detailed wind and wave forecasting, not available from many apps, is a big plus. It worked just fine for us when we tried it on a Samsung Galaxy S10, but customer reviews do indicate that the current 1.2.3 version works best on Apple products and may crash at times on some older Androids.

Price:  You can get two-day forecasts for free but advanced features and long-range forecasting requires a $14.99 premium upgrade.

Click here to download.

2. Fishweather

Anglers may love Fishweather for its onsite fishing reports, but all mariners will love its detailed wind maps showing both wind strength and direction on color-coded wind charts with detailed forecasting out to a week.  Plus, we’ve used Fishweather for years and over time have found that its wind forecasts one to three days out are about as accurate as any get.

Price: Free, but some of the more advanced features (like sea surface current charts and real-time Nowcast observations) require paid upgrades (starting at $3.99); however, even the basic version has a wealth of data.

3. NOAA Marine Weather Forecast

If you want an app that covers all of the marine weather bases, NOAA Marine Weather Forecast does the trick. Its comprehensive list of features includes buoy data, six-hour historical wave height trends, tide and current forecasts, National Weather Service marine forecasts, NOAA severe weather reports, NEXRAD radar imagery, and real-time wind, wave and temperature data.

Price: A data download like this doesn’t come free, however, and you’ll have to spend $1.99 to get NOAA Marine Weather Forecast on your phone.

4. NOAA Weather Radar & Live Alerts

We find this free app (with ads and in-app purchases) a top pick for its high reliability. Unlike many apps it doesn’t crash, lock up, or fail to deliver the data you want, when you want it. It includes real-time animated weather radar on a background map that’s easy to zoom in and out on, and also includes short and long-term forecasting.

The Live Alerts feature can become annoying at times (who needs their phone to beep a marine weather alarm, when they’re in their car or at the desk?) but is obviously quite valuable when you’re out on the water the forecast you saw earlier in the day turns out to be wrong.

Price: Free, with in-app purchases.

5. Predictwind

A favorite of serious sailors, Predictwind incorporates live weather observations from over 20,000 live stations, has high-resolution forecast maps, and forecast alerts. It also garners a rather impressive 4.8 out of five stars on the Apple App Store. That matches up with the uber-accurate forecasts we observed while using the app, which nailed wind direction and speed exactly.

Price: Free accounts get lower resolution mapping, and in-app purchases starting at $3.99 let you access better data.

6. Sailflow

Sailflow is a global service that taps into 50,000-plus weather stations to develop free wind forecasting. Radar precipitation maps, forecast maps, tide and current data, and nautical charts are also in the mix. This is another app that impressed us with its accuracy, predicting wind speed and direction to a tee.

Price:  For sailors it’s another top pick, but getting the detailed data takes a $3.99 (and up) in-app purchase.

7. Storm Shield

Another app developed for land-based activities but quite useful for those of us enjoying the boating lifestyle, Storm Shield is one you may want to load up and forget about—until it sets off an alert. Unlike many of the county-based weather alerts generated by apps, Storm Shield narrows down to your exact location.

Price: It’s a free service but if you want additional functionality like radar and wind speed forecasts, you’ll have to spring for the $0.99 in-app purchase.

8. United States Coast Guard

Yes, the United States Coast Guard has its own app, and while strictly speaking it isn’t 100-percent about marine weather, it has some valuable weather data boaters along any coast will want: free access to the latest weather info coming from the NOAA weather buoy nearest to your location.

Price: Free!

9. Weather Channel

Much of the information you’ll find on the Weather Channel app is relevant to land and it’ll take a bit of time to figure out how to navigate to the data we boaters care about, but still, this is a great weather app to have at your fingertips thanks to its extremely high reliability (on both Apple and Android platforms), live radar, severe weather alerts, and accurate forecasting. In fact, according to a study compiling seven years of forecasts performed by ForecastWatch , Weather Channel had the best overall accuracy around.

10. Weatherbug

Weatherbug has been around for a long time and is packed with data that’s not relevant to boaters (like pollen levels and traffic alerts), but this is another freebie with in-app purchases which places a tremendous amount of weather data at your fingertips. Maps for radar, lightning, wind—18 of them in all—and hourly to 10-day forecasting account for Weatherbug being picked the Best Weather App in 2016 and again in 2019 in the Mediapost Appy Awards.

So there you have it: 10 best marine weather apps no boater should be without. Now load one or more onto your phone, and you’ll be ready to cast off the lines and enjoy your next day on the water armed with a slew of knowledge about the weather that’s in store.

Last Updated on September 26, 2023 by Boatsetter Team

Marine weather apps can be amazingly useful for boaters, but which are the best marine weather apps of them all?

Whether you hit the water on your own boat, go out with a friend, or rent a boat , there’s no question that having marine weather apps on your phone can come in handy. Boaters of all sorts are subject to rain, wind, and extreme heat, so being prepared for the weather and keeping up to date on sudden changes is critical. But there are a ton of weather apps out there. So, which is the best marine weather app of all? Different people will have different favorites. But these 10 will surely be at or near the top of the list for most boaters.

Buoyweather

Fishweather, national weather service mobile, weather underground.

Got a boat? Put it to work—List it on Boatsetter

buoyweather app

Buoyweather includes location-based forecasts and full weather intel, but its unique, strong suit is the ability to deliver current sea conditions, including wind, wave height, and tide, at a glance. Unlike some apps, it also gives wave period along with the height. Note: this one used to be at the top of everyone’s lists but has taken a beating in the rankings lately on Google Play due to updates causing problems; as of August 2022, they said they had engineers working to fix the issues. Price: Free, but like many apps, some of the best features are locked unless you pay for in-app purchases. Visit Buoyweather .

fishweather app

This app also made our list of the 10 Best Fishing Apps because it’s oriented towards providing the weather intel anglers need most. It has weather maps with wind speed and wave height, and its users say the wind forecast models used by FishWeather are among the most accurate they’ve ever seen. The “Plus” version provides advanced features like sea surface temperature charts and current high-resolution data. Price: Free; $3.99/month for Plus. Visit Fishweather .

myalerts app

Strictly speaking, myAlerts isn’t a weather app, nor is it intended specifically for boaters. But it has much value for mariners since it allows you to set up alerts by location and severity. Set it and forget it, and then when bad weather is heading your way, you’ll be glad for it. Price: free. Visit AlertSense .

myradar app

There are times when all you want to see is the weather radar, and you want to see it asap. That’s when MyRadar comes into play. Without additional features or menus to scroll through, this app gives you single-tap access to reliable near-real-time animated weather radar. MyRadar boasts over 50 million downloads, has a 4.5-star rating, and we’ve been happily using it for years on our phones. Price: Free. Visit MyRadar .

national weather service app

Yes, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have its own app. Several, actually, but the one for boaters concerned with the weather delivers National Weather Service forecasts and weather info, including weather radar, forecast maps, and more. Price: Free. Visit National Weather Service Mobile .

sailflow app

Sailors swear by this one since it provides live wind speeds, forecasts, and mapped wind charts, plus their unique animated Flow map showing precise wind direction out into the future. It also has advanced features like radar precipitation maps and sea surface temperatures, but these require upgrading to one of the paid versions. Price: Free. Visit SailFlow .

weatherbug app

One of the longest-used and most popular general weather apps around, WeatherBug is a good one for boaters to keep handy, too. While it has a lot of weather data more pertinent to landlubbers, the marine weather data is still there, and the future radar predictive map will be particularly useful on the water. For all-around general use, this one’s a winner. Price: Free with ads, or $0.99/month without. Visit WeatherBug .

weather underground app

A perennial favorite for all-around weather use, Weather Underground covers all the basic bases and scores points for ease of use and simplicity. It’s also attractive because you get quite a bit of functionality without resorting to paying for upgrades. (The price for that, naturally, is a plethora of advertising). Price: Free. Visit Weather Underground .

wind alert app

Wind Alert has a list of features many weather apps provide (charts, radar data, etc.), but the clincher for this one is the ability to set up custom wind alerts via text or email, letting you know when wind speeds will be at levels critical to your boating adventures. Price: The basic version is free, but as usual, multiple upgrade levels unlock the cool stuff.

windy app

Wind is commonly a top concern for both sailors and powerboaters — even though the former may be hoping for more and the latter may be hoping for less. In either case, Windy is a simple, straightforward app that predicts wind conditions days in advance. It’s one so many people depend on; we included in 5 Apps No Boat Captain Should Even Try to Live Without . Price: Free, with in-app purchases. Visit Windy .

Best weather apps for sailors

Published on January 22nd, 2023 by Editor -->

Weather data is getting easier and cheaper to download. Sam Fortescue reviews the latest options for British publication Yachting Monthly and chooses the best weather apps for sailors.

Rapidly evolving digital technology now allows the sailing community to benefit from a huge range of specialized, easy to use and inexpensive weather apps.

Advanced weather forecasting models are currently being produced by a multitude of meteorological offices around the world, whose supercomputers churn through data of unimaginable complexity, from the charge of particles in the air to convection currents.

Different models have different strong points, and many of the weather apps covered in this survey allow you to select between them, with the more technical ones comparing several forecasts with actual observations in your area and recommending the most accurate.

yachting weather app

The best weather apps tend to charge a subscription fee, so it’s worth being clear on where and how you intend to use your boat.

There’s no sense going for PredictWind, for instance, with its offshore weather routing and narrowband satellite mode, if you just want to know what’s happening in your local estuary over the next few hours.

Some weather apps also offer better overseas coverage than others, with global predictions up to a year ahead.

But be aware that you may need to buy a separate subscription to unlock unlimited forward predictions beyond the UK. Note also that not all the apps offer the same level of support for secondary ports, so check your favorite spots before you buy.

Nor is it always specified whether the apps use UTC or local time, which can give rise to errors of an hour.

Weather apps draw on a huge range of meteorological models to gather and present their data, so dig down into the version details to make sure the meteorological model being used by the app will suit your cruising plans. – Full report

9 great weather apps for sailing.

yachting weather app

Let’s face it – the weather is as unpredictable as life and love and although we cannot foresee events (technology is not there yet!) we do have access to Smartphones that have become our ‘go to’ in many situations. Smartphones are now used for tracking, GPS, cameras, videos, near-field communications (Bluetooth), music and weather apps.

As a beginner or seasoned sailor, the weather can determine your course and sailing experience. Bad weather conditions can lead to yacht and sail damage. You need to know what global circulation systems are going to affect your trip and this is where you can use these apps to assist you.

Ullman Sails has made it easier for you by selecting 9 Great Weather Apps for Sailing

Windy/windity.

Windy (also known as Windyty) brings weather forecasts to life with its weather forecast visualization. This app is trusted by pilots, skydivers, kiters, boaters, fishermen and weather geeks! This is because it is fast, intuitive, and one of the most accurate weather apps.

This app will help you track storms, potential severe weather and plan trips with the most up-to-date weather forecast around.

PredictWind – Marine Forecasts

This is an impressive, but expensive app. It offers high levels of detail and the highest resolution and most accurate forecasts on the internet. The resolution is 1km at its best, and the site uses its own PWG and PWC models. If you pay more you will get weather routeing. It has been proven in yacht racing and offshore cruising. You can easily navigate between wind, swell, rain, cloud, air and sea temperatures in the table, map and graph views.

Yachting Weather App

This app is free, with in-app purchases. It uses GFS data from weather365.com and gives three-hourly forecasts. It’s user-friendly and gives simple wind, pressure, swell and cloud/rain data in a tabular format for anywhere in the world.

Theyr shows their latest ‘low precision’ forecast for the next 144 hours for free, which shows wind, wave, pressure and temperature. The animations are clear and easy to view, and well displayed. You’ll need to subscribe to view their high precision forecasts.

Navionics is an excellent navigation app that is used by sailors, fisherman and divers. It is well presented and has a range of measuring tools for all your activities on the water. You can plan routes for your next adventure and have access to the most current nautical charts with regular updates every day. Navionics has real-time weather data, daily and hourly forecasts, wind speeds, tides and currents.

Windfinder Pro

This app gives you insight into wind and waves for over 40, 000 global locations. The forecast models and maps are well displayed in high resolution. Detailed wind forecasts for weather and waves allows you to plan your own route. You can view high and low tides for over 80 000 global locations.

  • Air temperature
  • Precipitation

Windguru is a classic weather app that gives you simple weather forecasts. There are not many features so if you prefer something simple then this is the app for you. It provides classic Windguru forecast tables, works on slow internet connections and if you are offline you will still get previously loaded forecasts.

SailGrib gets 4.4 stars on the Android Play Store because it is an easy to use, full-fledged marine navigation app. It is perfect for recreational or competitive sailors.

Love this FREE app

I use this app all the time with no problems. We used it to travel the ICW Atlantic this fall and it was our guide to our travel plans each day. Only reason I am giving it 4 stars is that on my iPhone (iPhone 6s) it displays the map and locations making it easy to use. When my husband loads the app on his iPhone 8 we cannot get the map to appear, even though we compared all our settings to ensure we were the same. He has the latest iOS loaded so not sure if it is an issue with the iPhone 8? Would highly recommend this easy to use app and hope to get it working on the iPhone 8 with a Street / Wind map like it does on my iPhone 6s.

Developer Response ,

Hi RH. On your iPhone 8, you may have cellular data turned Off for SailFlow! On your iPhone, try going to the phone's Settings app. Tap Cellular. Scroll down to SailFlow and make sure cellular data is ON for SailFlow. You can also contact us at [email protected]

Unable to use favorites list

I used to love this app. However, it has become less user friendly over the years. Stations that have favorited no longer show up in my favorites list and every time I click on the station where I sail, I get a pop-up telling me to “favorite” the station… but I “favorited” it years ago, and last week, and again this week. After looking around the app to find my favorites again, I found them under the “Master Profile” option in the favorites tab. However, it is now an unusable menu because every time I click on a station, it asks me to upgrade my account or sign in. I am already signed in on the app with my free account. If I find the station I’m looking for on the map, I can still access the blend models of plus/pro stations. Why can’t I access these same pro/plus stations from my favorites list now with a free account?
SailFlow support can help you with these issues you're having, moomoodles. Give us a shout: Main Menu > Settings & Help > Contact Us.

More location-specific forecasting

You get weather specific to a more precise area. WU might give you a general forecast of rain and thunderstorms, which might be true somewhere in your forecast area, yet miss the mark for where you wish to sail. That’s weather in Florida! This app forecast the thunderstorms about 3-4 hours later for my vicinity of interest and was on the money. So this app is more helpful when you need a window of just 1-2 hours. If this app said thunderstorms or too-strong wind conditions were imminent for my vicinity/time of interest, I wouldn’t bother to try sailing that day.
We appreciate your vote of confidence, Barbershop Brad!

Sailing weather apps and websites

We delve into a plethora of sailing weather apps and websites in an attempt to discover which ones offer the most comprehensive detail and the best value

yachting weather app

The transformation in the availability, frequency and accuracy of weather forecasts available to the cruising sailor in the past decade has been truly amazing. Awaking, bleary-eyed, for the 0540 Shipping Forecast is but a distant memory for most sailors these days.

Internet weather gives us instant, six-hourly updates with wind and gust speeds, precipitation, temperatures, pressure and wave forecasts, all available at the touch of a button or the tap of a touch-screen. All you need is a mobile data signal or WiFi and you have the kind of weather data for which our forebears would have given their back teeth.

However, with choice comes complexity. With so many boating apps available, which should you choose? Which computer models are they based upon, and are any more accurate than others?

Using online weather forecasts Forecasts are so detailed now that it can be easy to be seduced by them – but don’t despair if the forecast looks awful a week away. A forecast for more than seven days ahead is likely to be little more than highly-educated guesswork. Closer in, the accuracy improves – and for a day or so ahead, modern forecasts are invariably correct.

Modern forecasts are based on numerical weather prediction (NWP). The two main centres are the UK Met Office and the US National Weather Service, which together provide the worldwide service to aviation, and it is from here that most forecasts originate. Numerical weather prediction takes into account all the physical factors driving the atmospheric conditions – the spin of the earth, heating by the sun, topography and the effects of water – and this raw data is fed into enormous supercomputers along with observations from the relevant area. These huge volumes of data are crunched by the machines to produce a forecast.

In all forecasts, there is much approximation and estimation of the physics. How the raw data is dealt with differs slightly as it is run through the different computer models. It’s useful to know which model each forecast uses: most, including nearly all GRIB files, use the American GFS model; others include NWW3, WRF, COAMPS, NAVGEM and ECMWF, as well as proprietary models. Most weather charts will have their origins printed somewhere in a margin, so it’s worth checking to see which of your forecasts can agree.

A consensus Where all the available forecasts agree, you can be fairly sure that the weather will do what they say and you can use them to plan a cruise with a fair degree of confidence. If they’re inconsistent, you should be more wary, as the outcome is more difficult to predict and will be subject to change. You should never rely upon one source only. Weather guru Frank Singleton told PBO: ‘The value of using several forecasts cannot be over-stressed. There is considerable benefit in having input from a human forecaster who can use intelligence and experience to interpret the computer output.’ So, look at as many online forecasts as you like – but don’t forget to check the synoptic chart as well, just in case.

Here are some of the most popular sites and sailing apps .

PredictWind

predictwind

Website, iOS and Android apps An expensive option, this – but PredictWind offers high levels of detail and, it claims, the highest resolution and most accurate forecasts on the internet. Indeed, it’s impressive. The resolution is 1km at its best, and the site uses its own PWG and PWC models. Prices range from £9 to £399 a year, depending on the level of access required – if you want 1km resolution, then you’ll need to pay the money! At the highest end, it also includes weather routeing.

met-office

Dr Simon Keeling’s site offers a subscription service: for £65 every six months you get access to all of his unique ‘musings’ videos, which discuss the developing weather, as well as looking at the month ahead, and the long-term trends which will affect the upcoming weather. It’s a great site, which will educate you as well as giving you the forecasts you need. Weather maps are available which use not only the usual suspects – GFS, etc – but also ‘pro models’ developed by Dr Keeling and his associates. A free three-day trial is available.

windfinder

Website, iOS and Android apps Windfinder is based on the GFS model on a 13km resolution, and offers wind and wave data as well as weather reports. You can upgrade to a ‘Pro’ version of the apps, which give you high-resolution wind predictions on an hourly basis and wind forecast maps.

metcheck

Under the ‘Sailing Forecasts’ tab, Metcheck provides a useful forecast for inshore waters areas as well as selected sailing clubs. It uses NWW3 and GFS models. It’s a little simplified – no gust data can be obtained – but the available data is well presented and easy to read.

yr-no

This Norwegian site displays wind speed in m/s, but is a useful reference: and to get to knots, just double the m/s speed. Wind and weather forecasts are available on an hourly basis, with wind barbs showing the speed and direction. Long-range forecasts are available up to 10 days ahead. Sadly, wind maps – which are presented in a useful fashion – are only available for Scandinavia and the eastern North Sea. Nonetheless, the remainder of the site still makes it a really useful planning tool.

WetterZentrale

wetterzentrale

This website might be written in German, but this site is perhaps the biggest one-stop resource out there. All free, it collates forecasts from all the major forecast centres in one place. It can display forecasts up to 384 hours in advance (that’s 16 days) – useful to watch, but not as accurate as you might wish. Nonetheless, it can display GFS, GEM, JMA, NAVGEM, UK Met Office, ECMWF, ENS and WRF, as well as many other forecast models. Click on ‘Weitere GFS Karten’ and ‘10m Wind’ (Mitteleur) for the GFS wind forecasts. NAVGEM forecasts also cover the UK and offer a useful comparison, and Met Office synoptic charts are available. Wetterzentrale can be tricky to get the hang of, but the data is there and is really useful.

Yachting Weather app

yachting-weather

XC Weather, originally developed for gliders, combines forecasts based on the GFS model with a network of weather stations for real-time wind data across the country. It displays wind history at these sites, and forecasts with wind gust speed on a three-hourly basis. It works really well on a computer screen, but is a little fiddly to use on a touch-screen.

Rain Radar UK Free

rain-radar-uk

Website and iOS app Theyr offer various subscription-based services, mostly based on WRF models. Standard registration is £99.99 per year, and premium (with higher resolutions and other models) is £199 a year. Nevertheless, you can view their latest ‘low precision’ forecast for the next 144 hours on their website for free, which shows wind, wave, pressure and temperature. The animations are clear and easy to view, and well visualised. You’ll need to subscribe to view their standard (12km resolution) and high precision (2km resolution) forecasts.

Meteociel.fr

meteociel

Website, iOS and Android apps This French website, also available as an iOS and Android app, gives a real-time wind map, as well as useful WRF-based wind maps (click on ‘Valeurs vent rafales’). It combines the wind arrows with isobars to give you a very handy overview not only of forecast wind, but also approaching weather fronts. It’s worth dealing with the language barrier to get into!

PBO Verdict All these sites and apps will give you a weather forecast, but they vary in the quality and quantity of data available. We found PredictWind to offer excellent clarity, resolution and accuracy, but at a substantial cost for the pro features. Its basic level, at £9 a month, gives a good enough level of data for cruisers. Windyty is a great, free way to see what’s going on in a well-presented format, while Windguru is a PBO favourite that works well. For longer-range forecasts, WetterZentrale and yr.no are both useful. All of these show how far we’ve come since the shipping forecast was the only available forecast – it’s just a shame the BBC’s website has yet to catch up!

Interpreting Yacht Weather Forecasting Data

To interpret yacht weather forecasting data effectively, you need to understand weather patterns and systems, analyze wind speed and direction, and assess wave conditions. These sub-sections provide solutions for navigating through the complexities of yacht weather forecasting data.

Understanding Weather Patterns and Systems

Analyzing meteorological data is essential for understanding weather patterns. Factors like wind direction, cloud cover and precipitation enable us to anticipate changes in weather conditions. Further, examining the movement of high and low pressure areas, frontal boundaries and air masses, helps to predict how they will affect our local weather. This enables us to plan outdoor activities efficiently and consider risks.

To fully comprehend weather patterns and systems, it’s necessary to consider historical data. Comparative analysis of the past aids in recognizing patterns or anomalies that could affect future weather trends. Collaborating with experts in the field enhances understanding through shared insights.

Keeping up with current research developments in meteorology is important. Checking reputable sources for new findings ensures access to fresh knowledge. Additionally, engaging in learning opportunities such as courses or workshops provides us with the skills to interpret meteorological data.

By combining analytical skills with meteorological principles, one can confidently interpret yacht weather forecasting data. Accurate interpretation maximizes safety and enhances the sailing experience.

Analyzing Wind Speed and Direction

Analyzing wind speed and direction can help us understand the wind conditions. Here is a table with the wind speed and direction for a certain location over time:

Wind Speed (knots) Wind Direction
15 Northeast
12 East
17 Southeast
14 East

Studying this data helps sailors identify wind behavior patterns and plan sailing routes. It gives them insights into the prevailing wind to help optimize sail trim and course planning.

Wind direction is also important in determining the optimal heading for sailors. Sailing against the wind is called beating or tacking. Understanding the prevailing wind directions lets sailors pick routes that minimize tacking and maximize efficiency.

Pro Tip: Local topography can influence wind speed and direction. Factors like coastal areas, mountains, or high-rise buildings can change wind patterns. Consider these local elements when interpreting weather information for your sailing destination.

Assessing Wave Conditions

When evaluating wave conditions, it’s important to have a good grasp on yacht weather forecasting data. Therefore, here’s a 3-step guide to help you out:

  • Investigate the meteorological sources of wave forecasts.
  • Check the accuracy of historical records.
  • Consult sailors or oceanographers for more reliable info.
  • Make note of the significant wave height.
  • See the wave period – how long it takes for waves to reach a point.
  • Determine if it works with your vessel and route.
  • Check the direction of the waves in relation to your path.
  • See if they’re perpendicular or parallel to your vessel’s heading.
  • Note any irregularities in the wave pattern.

Remember, local currents, wind, and underwater topography can alter waves. Stay aware of these details through research, expert advice, or specialized tools. To stay safe, take the time to understand yacht weather forecasting data. This will help protect you and your vessel from hazardous wave conditions.

Follow safety protocols and make sure your yacht’s equipment is properly maintained. Get professional advice when required. Besides that, be aware of special weather conditions – like potential storms – and the hazards in certain areas. This way, you’ll be ready for any inclement weather and make smart decisions.

For example, a yacht that encountered a storm with no warning. The equipment didn’t save them; they weren’t prepared. It caused damage to the vessel and put the people on board in danger. That’s why it’s important to take precautionary steps and stay informed.

Yacht weather forecasting is not only about storms and high winds. Temperature , humidity , pressure systems , and ocean currents must be studied. Sailors can use this info for route planning and adjusting sails.

Satellite imagery and tech are used to get real-time data and sophisticated modeling. This helps sailors stay ahead of changing weather and avoid dangerous situations.

In 1987, the Fastnet Race in the UK had a deadly storm. Hurricane-force winds caused many yachts to damage or capsize. This showed the need for accurate weather forecasting in yachting for safety .

Sailors must learn weather patterns and get forecasting tools for reducing risks. Yacht weather forecasting is an ongoing process that needs vigilance and adaptability.

Jon Bilger on monitoring weather while on passage and making good decisions when it comes to weather forecasting

yachting weather app

While it’s essential to monitor the conditions when choosing the best weather window for departure, equally important is being well-versed in obtaining and interpreting weather data while offshore – keeping up with the latest evolving weather movements enables you to position yourself to take advantage of favourable winds and avoid dangerous conditions.

Getting weather data while on passage can be done via SSB radio or satellite systems like Iridium, Inmarsat, and Starlink. The crucial aspect is the device’s ability to transfer meaningful data, particularly weather files in GRIB format and weather routing files. Certain satellite devices, such as Inreach, Zoleo, and Spot, cannot transfer weather data files. These SBD (short burst data) devices have limited functionality despite their popularity, and cannot handle voice communications either.

Reliability is paramount, especially in adverse conditions when weather updates become most critical. The connection should be available at any time, ensuring you never rely on outdated data: twice-daily weather data retrievals are sensible. Timing your analysis and planning with weather model updates will further enhance your decision-making process.

Specialist software

Offshore weather demands specialised software so you don’t have to be constantly connected to the web. The software should be capable of saving data offline, reading, and compressing GRIB format files while efficiently managing your downloads based on your connection type’s speed and bandwidth.

The PredictWind Offshore App allows you to select weather models, GRIB resolution, time step, and the number of days for each GRIB. You can customise parameters such as wind, pressure, rain, CAPE (Convective Available Potential Energy), wave heights, gusts, temperature, and cloud cover. Ocean and tidal currents can also be added, but their large file sizes require careful management.

Article continues below…

These GRIBs form the foundational data for offshore weather, but to truly harness their potential, additional tools and datasets are crucial. Weather routing, wave routing, ocean data, AIS, graphical GMDSS, and associated warnings significantly enhance the interpretation of this data. You can also include parameters such as observations, satellite imagery, and tracking data.

Different scenarios

Weather routing is at the core of weather monitoring while on passage. This gives you the information to allow you to plan and adapt your strategy. A weather routing algorithm calculates your route to your destination using the performance of your boat in any wind speed or angle.

A smart weather routing tool will also use currents, along with wind waves and swell. The PredictWind weather routing tool has these features, and routes are calculated in the PredictWind cloud. This saves the user time and a massive amount of data. In the cloud, the route calculation involves billions of computations, exploring every conceivable scenario to provide you with the most optimal route based on six weather models, three wave models, and three ocean current models.

Compare models for consensus – a divergent route will also indicate where models don’t all align

This wealth of data is derived from the latest model run, ensuring the highest resolution at all times. In contrast, attempting to download and process this vast amount of data onto the boat might consume over an hour, and still the results may not match the efficiency achieved using the cloud-based system.

Short- and long-term analysis

There are two main types of analysis you can conduct from the data you receive during offshore sailing. The short-term focus involves examining the weather conditions for the next 6-12 hours, 12-24 hours, and up to three days in detail, covering a smaller area. This analysis is done every 12 hours to keep track of the immediate conditions.

For a longer-term outlook you focus on the next 3-10 day range covering a wider area. This provides insights into the weather trends you might encounter during this extended period.

For short-term routing, you should look for key waypoints: identify crucial points on the route, taking note of wind direction changes and trends. Add these waypoints to your plotter or navigation software for reference. Then download weather routes for all six models (always download them all). Choose the specific GRIB files and parameters you need for analysis. To manage file size, decrease the resolution to 50km or 100km and select a smaller area for downloading. The minimum GRIB parameters include wind, pressure, rain, and 3-5 days of data. If file size permits, you can also add CAPE, gust, and possibly wave features.

Besides weather routes, you should also download GMDSS text and graphical data, along with AIS data to view shipping and fishing vessels within 330 miles of your position. Once the download is complete, analyse the data by quickly checking the graphs to get a rapid overview of the current situation.

Routing display shows parameters that are available to download for PC, tablet and mobile devices

Route conditions

When assessing route conditions, first observe whether the trend in wind speed is increasing or decreasing and whether the wind direction is veering or backing. Consistent trends across most weather models provide a higher level of forecast certainty, while divergence requires further investigation on the maps.

Next, quickly check the average wind speed to ensure it falls within your comfort level, taking into account the true wind angle you’re sailing. Afterwards, focus on the wave data, examining metrics such as roll, vertical acceleration, and boat slamming. Ideally, you’d want the roll to stay below 4°, vertical acceleration below 0.2g, and no boat slamming, as 50% slamming could damage your boat.

With this initial information in mind, you can now make informed decisions. If any levels exceed your comfort zone, consider how best to mitigate them. You might want to think about alternative courses to avoid adverse conditions, slowing down to wait for weather changes, or prepare the boat and crew for the conditions ahead.

To assess the conditions along your route, refer to the wind tab, which provides a comprehensive view of each model’s conditions for your routes. Pay particular attention to warnings such as thunderstorms, lightning, gusts, wind against current, vertical acceleration, roll, slamming, and wind chill. The table displays the parameters responsible for these warnings and their timing.

For a broader perspective of the entire route, a quick look at the summary tab can be beneficial, especially for longer-term planning.

Moving on to the wave tab, you’ll find a more detailed breakdown of the data observed in the graphs. This section offers a clearer understanding of elevated levels of roll, vertical acceleration, and slamming. The wave heights and primary, secondary, and tertiary swell states provide additional insight into different directions, sizes, and wave periods.

In cases where you don’t have a GRIB file for currents, you can use the tables to access current speed and direction at any time. Alternatively, you can tap on specific points on the weather routing map to view current details at those locations.

yachting weather app

Diving into observations will give you a more comprehensive picture of actual conditions

Model consensus?

When evaluating the map view with the overlaid routes, it’s crucial to look for consensus across the models. You can easily spot this by examining the tracks of the different routes over the next 12 hours. If there’s an outlier – when a model shows a different route – investigate the reason.

This often occurs in light winds or when a front or weather feature crosses your route. For instance, a rain band associated with a wind direction change might indicate a passing front, causing variations in routes. In such cases, choose the route that closely matches your current conditions and timing.

Additionally, keep an eye on the CAPE parameter because elevated CAPE levels suggest an intense event. That should prompt you to brief the crew to prepare for reducing sail, and consider any other safety precautions.

If you’re looking at the timing of a change, then look closely at the wind, gust and rain parameters across the models. If you saw warnings in the tables, the PredictWind router shows these on the maps at the corresponding time along the routes.

Handling large files

Handling large current GRIB files can be a challenge via offshore connections. However, there’s a strategy to mitigate this issue. Download the currents GRIBs before you leave, as they don’t change as rapidly as atmospheric conditions. Even if you’re using slightly older data for visualising the currents overlaid with weather routes, they can still provide valuable insights.

In the map view, focus on identifying instances when wind is against the current. Weather routing warnings typically pick up on this, but the map view allows you to visualise the timings when you might enter current zones. By flicking through different current models like Mercator, Hycom, and RTOFS, you can identify any differences in positioning and strength between the models.

south-africa-europe-sailing-navigation-hero-credit-kraken-yachts

The longer term view

Typically, the longer-term view only requires attention every 24 to 36 hours, unless specific weather features are forming and warrant closer monitoring. For this planning, start by enlarging your GRIB area well beyond your passage length and consider which side of your route the weather is approaching from. Choose a 100km resolution and download just one model – ECMWF is my recommended choice for longer-term analysis.

Next, narrow down the parameters to wind and pressure only, while obtaining more days of data. Ensure the download also includes GMDSS text and graphical data.

Weather routes are still important, as they allow you to track any low-pressure systems or extreme weather events that might develop over time. This broader view provides insight into the bigger picture of weather patterns forming.

To identify potential weather events more accurately, refer to the GMDSS graph, which indicates everything from troughs and fronts to gale areas and hurricanes.

For a more in-depth analysis, interpret the GMDSS text, which has been professionally crafted by a meteorologist, to investigate any specific events of interest.

This longer term analysis will help you make better informed decisions for a more efficient and more comfortable passage, and either avoid or prepare for heavy weather.

Just bear in mind that this isn’t an exhaustive methodology and there are various ways to utilise this weather data. With practice, you’ll likely develop your own methods and processes over time.

Yachtsmen, when deciding whether to go to sea today or not, are guided primarily by the weather. How do I know the weather forecast, if the voyage has been going on for several days ? Weather forecast applications help out in such cases.

A weather app - what does it look like? It is a program showing meteorological data that is downloaded using GRIB files. There are applications that resell GRIB files (in fact free), which appear every six hours on the FTR of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

yachting weather app

The Saldocs server warns that the computer often underestimates the strength of sea storms when simulating, since they are small in the coordination grid. The GRIB file provides information about the expected movement of the cyclone , but you cannot fully rely on this information, you need to track forecasters warnings from other sources. The GRIF file is calculated by the computer, excluding the interpretation of meteorologists.

Experienced sailors are advised to remember the rules developed over the years in the process of observation:

  • the wind usually dies down in the evening and gets stronger during the day;
  • winds blow along a rocky or steep coast and bend around the headland (not over it);
  • the pressure drops above the ground during the day, warming up the resulting breezes;
  • pressure increases over the ground at night and offshore winds cool;
  • if the pressure drops slowly, then a light breeze and light rain are likely;
  • plummeting pressure signals an impending storm;
  • the pressure decreases moderately, it means there will be a moderate wind; the possibility of rain in a warm front is not excluded.

Weather apps will be useful helpers if you don't forget about certain restrictions. In this article, 2yachts specialists present 5 popular programs that you should familiarize yourself with and adopt, which seems the most convenient.

yachting weather app

Global Forecasting System (GFS) - The Most Simple Application

The American model is large-scale and does not take into account such "small details" as land relief, small islands, thermal winds, and coastal outlines. Provides reasonably accurate weather forecasts one hundred (or more) miles from land with a resolution of 0.5 degrees, i.e. its grid of coordinates covers a square of approximately 50x50 kilometers.

This model is unsuitable for closed water bodies and near the coast, as forecasts often do not correspond to reality. When using the local model as a source of information, the weather forecast for a particular area will be reasonably accurate.

As a rule, the forecast underestimates the strength of the wind. Traditionally, wind speed is measured at 10 meters above sea level. When the mast of the sailing yacht is over 10 meters , 20% should be added to the promised speed. Keep in mind that with wind gusts, the speed increases by another twenty percent. The startup screen, upon initial acquaintance with the program, will inform you about the absence of GRIB files; the "+" sign is located in the upper right corner, click it. Select a geographic area in the application: find it in the catalog or mark it on the map.

Then customize the weather forecast by setting the duration, step, resolution, and select the indicators you want to see with the indication of units. The app can report forecast pressure in millibars or inches of mercury , temperature in Fahrenheit or Celsius, wind speed in km/h, knots, mph or Beaufort. After all the values of the units of measure are set, the GRIB file can be downloaded to a mobile phone and used offline.

You can use the Lite version for free, providing information for two days with a frequency of 6 hours on the type of precipitation, wind direction and strength, atmospheric pressure. Weather forecast for 8 days is provided by paid version with 3-hour step (this is the minimum); in addition to all of the above, you can find out data on wave height, cloud accumulation, relative humidity. For Android, this version costs $ 4, and for iOS it already costs $ 6.

Meteorological information can be viewed by overlaying it on a map, as well as in the form of a table or graph. Wind on the map is indicated by an arrow, precipitation - by darkening with a different shade, pressure - by isobars. For those who are forgetful, there is a hint that you can call with one click on the map . The "play" icon is located at the bottom of the screen, with its help you can turn on an animation showing how the weather conditions will change over a certain period of time. If you need to quickly understand the tendencies of weather changes, then the most convenient meteogram is, according to the indicators, graphs that clearly demonstrate the changes.

yachting weather app

iGrib Application

How it works: GRIB files are loaded from the American GFS server and layers of information are overlaid on the map (they can be disabled at choice and the transparency level can be changed). This format for providing information is the only one; the maximum forecast period is 10 days.

For information on:

  • wind direction and strength;
  • atmospheric pressure;
  • excitement at sea;
  • air temperature;
  • cloud cluster;
  • types of precipitation.

It is enough to click on a specific point on the map and a window of weather parameters of this particular place will open, meteorological characteristics are configured in accordance with your wishes. The advantage of the application is good graphics and download of GRIB files from other meteorological services (not just GFS). There is no free version, for Android the price is $ 7, and for iOS - $ 6.

yachting weather app

Windfinder App

The horizontal resolution of the free version is almost 27 kilometers, the program works with GFS data. The paid version is supplemented with local North American and European models with a resolution of 12 kilometers and an Egyptian one with a seven kilometers resolution. On the start screen you can see a list of selected locations with a listing of information on the wind direction, current speed, air temperature.

There are two ways to add a geographic region to the list of “favorites”:

  • independently search the proposed list;
  • the application automatically detects your location by GPS when you enter the name of a nearby settlement.

A detailed forecast for the week is given in three-hour increments, where information on:

  • wind speed;
  • rough seas;
  • ebb and flow;

On the "Report" screen, you can see a report in the form of a graph of changes in wind direction (its strength) for the area of interest over the last 12 hours, which allows you to trace the trend.

The paid version has a small graphical application (widget), when installed on the screen at home it is possible to view the weather report in a specific geographic location without opening the program, which is very rational. Nice surprise: the price of the app is only $ 2, the same for iOS and Android.

yachting weather app

PredictWind Application

Thanks to the author's development, this application, when predicting weather conditions, is able to take into account the relief of the requested territory; works with two sources of information: GFS and SMS, respectively, of the American and Canadian meteorological services. The free version offers a weekly forecast (1 hour step) with a resolution of one hundred kilometers. At the same time, the weather forecast can be viewed only for three preset points. Wind speed and direction are shown on the map, the rest of the traditional information is available in the form of graphs and tables.

Paid versions are supplemented with maps of waves, clouds and rain, the temperature of not only air, but also water. An excellent resolution of one kilometer is provided by the professional version. Paid versions include data for planning the route, taking into account the upcoming weather, you can make the shortest route and calculate an acceptable sailing start date, as well as GPS tracking, which is very convenient for those who pass yachts for rent , as it allows you to constantly monitor the location of your property.

Quite an interesting option - transfer of GRIF files via satellite; during a long voyage (in the absence of the Internet) this application is simply irreplaceable.

The disadvantages include a complex interface, oversaturated with charts, and pricing. You will have to pay almost $ 200 for a three-month use of the professional version , and almost $ 500 for an annual one. etc.

yachting weather app

Weathertrack App

It has GRIB files from many sources: the traditional GFS, Tidetech (a leading provider of oceanographic data), the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, the Cyprus Center for Oceanography, the German Federal Office for Maritime Shipping and Hydrography, the non-profit organization Sailmail. Can receive data without an Internet connection by receiving data via a satellite link; only works on Apple devices. Pay $ 10 and get access to GRIB Viewer providing 16 days weather forecasts.

Diagrams, layers of information on the map, graphs show all the necessary information on:

  • wind direction and speed;
  • ocean currents;
  • water and air temperature;
  • types of precipitation;

It is proposed to expand the capabilities of the application by connecting the following functions for an additional fee:

  • GRIB Robot (capable of transmitting several GRIB files simultaneously via satellite, combining information);
  • Route Weather (allows you to pave the way and set an auspicious start day).

The cost of a weekly application of GRIB Robot will be about $ 3, and for half a year - almost $ 29. Please note that you will need to purchase a dedicated device to connect your iPhone to a satellite phone. The cost of Route Weather is pleasing, only $ 5. And the cost of Tidetech, showing high-resolution maps of tidal currents will cost $ 8 per month or almost 48 - per year.

State of the art weather apps provide seafarers with a more comfortable environment, especially on long voyages . Thanks to them, you can calculate the best route, shorten the distance, and thereby reduce the travel time. Choose the application that is most convenient for you and use it with pleasure!

Sailors can now benefit from an upgraded Solentmet weather app, providing handy real-time weather conditions in the Solent and Chichester Harbour

yachting weather app

The new Solentmet weather app has been developed specifically for the latest versions of Android and iOS. It should work seamlessly on most popular phones. The app is entirely free of charge to users and provided without a subscription by the Solentmet Support Group charity.

The rewrite has significantly improved the customer experience and refreshed the visuals using mobile-specific displays. This makes the weather graphs more readable and navigation around the app easier.

Sailors in the Solent area have long used the read-outs from the Bramble Met weather buoy, located on the Bramble Bank opposite Cowes.

It feeds real time data into the SolentMet weather app, which allows sailors to consult precise wind data from this and three other weather buoys in the area. The others are located up Southampton Water, just outside Chichester Harbour and one inside Chichester Harbour.

The buoys supply wind speed and direction and plot a very handy graph showing trends over the past 12 hours. They give you a fighting chance of deciding which side of the race course is likely to produce the lift. But cruisers also find it handy to check on real conditions out in the Solent.

The Solentmet weather app can also display tidal heights and barometric pressure. It presents all the data in a modern, responsive app format that is native to both iPhone and Android phones.

Solentmet Support Group developer and trustee James Lavery says: “I am delighted that this new update means we are now able to deliver a modern, responsive app with real-time information including wind, atmospheric and tide height for boaters and sailors in the Solent”.

Early user reviews have been very positive.

Yacht expert breaks down luxury superyacht tragedy after boat capsizes in freak storm: 'Always limits'

A luxury superyacht like the Bayesian , which capsized and sank early Monday with more than a dozen people on board, is typically built to withstand extreme weather conditions, but not everything is 100% guaranteed, says one expert.

Fox News Digital spoke with eSysman of the YouTube channel eSysman SuperYachts , to find out what could have gone wrong with the vessel.

The host, who identifies publicly as eSysman, told Fox News Digital that a high-caliber yacht like the Bayesian, should typically be able to withstand up to "extreme weather conditions," but qualified that "there are always limits."

"Obviously, any voyage plan will take into account the weather. Wind, wave sizes, and frequencies of the waves will be studied and precise prediction of weather has improved over the years, but it’s still not 100%," eSysman said, noting that it is ultimately the captain who is responsible for the vessel.

WHO IS MIKE LYNCH, THE BRITISH TECH ENTREPRENEUR MISSING AFTER YACHT SANK?

The Bayesian was notable for its single 246-foot mast — one of the world's tallest made of aluminum and which was lit up at night, just hours before it sank. Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros – or around about $215,000 – a week.

READ ON THE FOX NEWS APP

Sicily's civil protection agency said that a tornado over the water known as a waterspout had struck the area overnight.

British tech magnate Mike Lynch and five other people were missing after their luxury superyacht sank during a freak storm off Sicily early Monday, authorities said.

Lynch's wife and 14 other people survived. Lynch was among six people who remain unaccounted for after their chartered sailboat sank off the Italian city of Porticello, near Palermo, sometime after 4 a.m.

"There’s always the possibility of survivors. This is why the search and rescue will keep going, no matter how slim the chances are," eSysman said. "But life expectancy in cold water is short."

If a vessel is caught in high-winds, eSysman, [they] will start their engines, and maneuver into a position where the wind is on the bow, avoiding the beam or the side of the vessel from being against the wind.

"We’re not sure if the yacht was at anchor or was sailing. The eyewitness report seems to suggest the vessel was anchored in the bay, but the AIS data's lost position said she was underway, so we're not sure which is correct," eSysman said.

"AIS" refers to "Automatic Identification System," which is a short-range coastal tracking system used on ships.

Per its YouTube channel, the team at eSysman SuperYachts comprises all serving or ex-maritime professions, with eSysman himself having more than two decades in the industry working on various SuperYachts of all sizes "including some of the largest in the world."

The crew and passengers of the Bayesian hailed from a variety of countries: In addition to Britain and the United States, passengers and crew were from Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain.

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment. The Foreign Commonwealth and Development office said it was "providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families."

Built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, the yacht can accommodate 12 passengers in four double cabins, a triple and the master suite, plus crew accommodations, according to Charter World and Yacht Charters.

Great app for yachtsmen

Used it for the past 2 weeks and found it accurate and very useful. Would love to see an auto location function

Absolutely Great!

I totall LOVE the new version. The interface is so incredibly easy, the displays are fantastically clear and understandable and the weather information provided is very thorough. It includes things left out by other apps such as wave height and period, humidity, lightening strikes, etc. The only problem I have with this ap is that it is not clear how to ADD a location and name it. I will probably figure that out soon. But I think it should have been made easier - at least as easy as the rest of the program. GREAT job! HIGHLY reccomended.

Most accurate wave, height, wind, condition.

Most apps on sea condition underestimate the wave height and other measures involving marine measures. This is the best & most accurate marine data & predictor. Many other apps are so inaccurate they are not worth having despite all their data. As a Ph.D. statistical accuracy is critical to my scientific publications. Finally there is an app that consistently demonstrates scientific accuracy of Marine conditions.

Experts puzzle over why Bayesian yacht sank. Was it a 'black swan event'?

Portrait of Cybele Mayes-Osterman

The Bayesian set off on a leisurely cruise around Italy's southern coast on a sunny day in late July.

The luxurious super yacht − which boasted one of the largest masts in the world and carried a crew of business moguls, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his family and a chair of Morgan Stanley − set sail from the Amalfi Coast, bound for Sicily.

Less than a month later, the ship had sunk 160 feet under the water , leaving its cook dead and six of its passengers, including at least two Americans, missing and prompting a massive search that has drawn international attention.

Now, experts are trying to piece together why in the early hours Monday the Bayesian was quickly pulled under the waves amid a storm that saw at least one tornado spin up over the water.

A perfect storm led to Bayesian sinking, experts say

The combination of unlikely factors that could have contributed to the ship's fate constituted a "black swan event," Matthew Schanck, chairman of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told USA TODAY.

The Bayesian was well-built: A 2008 product of Italian ship maker Perini, it was constructed in accordance with international maritime standards and commercially certified by the U.K.'s Maritime and Coastguard Agency, according to Schanck.

The bout of bad weather that swept the area when the ship went down was also out of the ordinary in the northern Mediterranean, "which isn't renowned for prolonged, significant stormy weather," he said.

"The fact that those two elements have then resulted in the foundering of a super yacht is pretty extraordinary," Schanck said. "These things don't happen every day."

After the ship sank just before 5 a.m. local time, 15 people, including a 1-year-old, were pulled from the water. Some were rescued from a life raft by the crew of a ship docked nearby.

Ricardo Thomas, the ship's cook and a native of Antigua, was found dead, according to authorities.

As of Tuesday, six people were missing, including Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter. Several missing passengers were involved in Lynch's trial on fraud charges, including Jonathan Bloomer, a Morgan Stanley chair who served as his character witness, and one of Lynch's attorneys. Lynch, accused of fraud after he sold his company to electronics giant Hewlett-Packard, was acquitted of all charges weeks ago.

Tornado formed over unusually hot water

Storms in the area that night may have whipped up a water spout, a tornado over the water , according to local meteorologists.

It was likely triggered by the water's unusual warmth, said Rick Shema, a certified consulting meteorologist who served in the Navy.

"The water spout was an uncommon occurrence," he said. "But again, these things happen, especially in warmer water."

At 83.7 degrees, water in the area was more than 3 degrees hotter than average on the day the Bayesian sank, likely the result of climate change, Shema said.

"Hurricanes can form at 80 degrees. This was almost four degrees higher than that," he said.

The water spout may have spun up when cooler air dropped from mountainous places nearby onto the hot water, he said. "A water spout is a vortex, basically like a tornado, spinning real fast, sucking up water and moisture as the column rises," he said.

Although water spouts only reach around 120 mph, as compared with tornadoes on land, which can reach up to 300 mph, "you don't need 200 mph to sink a ship," he said.

"Even an average tornado, 120 miles an hour, that's a lot of wind," he said, "which would heel the boat over for sure."

Water spouts spring up suddenly, Shema said. Before they strike, winds can be slow, but "once the water spout comes over, bam, it's on," he said.

Before sunrise, the ship's crew may not have seen the water spout coming. "The visibility was probably a big factor," he said.

With the windows of the yacht opened, as they likely were in the hot weather, the water spout could have triggered water that flooded through the portholes, Shema said, causing the ship to sink.

Tragedy strikes: Scramble to find survivors after Bayesian yacht sinks off Sicily coast

Search continues, but shift to recovery phase approaches

Italian authorities said the Bayesian was probably at anchor when the storm struck, meaning it couldn't maneuver and ride the waves, according to Mitchell Stoller, a captain and maritime expert witness. Other ships in the area that turned on their engines rode out the storm, he said.

"When you're at anchor and you see weather, you start your engine and you put the wind on the bow. You don't let it get on the side," he said.

Schanck said another key question concerns the position of the keel, a heavy weight underneath the boat that acts as a counterbalance to keep it upright, when the ship sank. When lifted, "that's going to affect the stability of the vessel, because, obviously, you've now raised the center of gravity of that vessel," he said.

The Bayesian was floating over 160 feet of water at the time, deep enough that the keel would likely be deployed. But the fact that "the vessel heeled over so heavily makes me question that," Schanck said.

The cause of the disaster may not be known until the ship can be examined in more detail, experts say. Prosecutors in a nearby town have already opened an investigation.

Schanck said investigators will have plenty to work with once the operation moves into a recovery phase.

"The vessel is intact and in good condition on the seabed," he said. "There's a lot of eyewitness accounts from other vessels in the area and the shore."

As the search entered its second day on Tuesday, the rescue effort may shift in that direction soon. "I suspect, later on, today or tomorrow, we'll probably see some mention of a recovery operation being stated," Schanck said.

The decision to would depend on whether rescuers find signs of life in the ship and air pockets or survivable spaces, Schanck said. At this point, survivors on the water's surface looks unlikely. "My professional opinion is that the casualties will be located within the vessel," he said.

"There is a risk versus benefit in all maritime search and rescue incidents," he said. "Where we start transitioning to a recovery phase, that line shifts."

Breaking news, russia urges citizens to stop using dating apps in areas being hammered by ukraine.

Russia has begged its citizens to quit using dating apps and warned them to start curbing social media usage in the regions being hammered by Ukrainian forces following their surprise cross-border incursion.

“The use of online dating services is strongly discouraged,” Russia’s interior ministry warned in a post on its official Telegram channel.

“The enemy actively uses such resources for information gathering.”

Ukrainian forces fight during military operations in Russia's Kursk region Wednesday.

The warning was blasted out late Tuesday to citizens in Kursk, Belgorod and Bryansk — three border regions being targeted by Ukrainian forces as Kyiv forges ahead with its incursion onslaught.

In addition to trying to clamp down on dating app usage, the ministry fired off a list of recommendations advising people not to open hyperlinks in messages or stream videos where military vehicles are present, and to remove all geo-tagging locations on social media.

“The enemy monitors social networks in real time by these tags and reveals the actual location of military and security forces,” the post said.

Ukrainian forces are also connecting to “unprotected CCTV cameras remotely, viewing everything — from private yards to roads and highways of strategic importance,” the ministry added.

Separately, Russia’s state telecommunications monitoring service said Wednesday it had recorded mass disruptions in the popular Telegram and WhatsApp messaging apps.

It stopped short of revealing what was behind the disruptions.

Russia has begged its citizens to quit using dating apps and warned them to start curbing social media usage.

The warnings, meanwhile, came as Ukraine attacked Moscow on Wednesday with one of the biggest drone strikes since the war began in February 2022.

Russia’s defense ministry said it downed a total of 45 drones over Russian territory overnight, including 11 over the Moscow region, 23 over Bryansk, six over the Belgorod region, three over the Kaluga region and two over the Kursk region.

“This was one of the biggest attempts of all time to attack Moscow using drones,” Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said on his Telegram channel, adding that strong defenses around the capital made it possible to shoot the drones down before they struck their intended targets.

Russian media showed unverified footage of drones apparently whizzing through the sky in Moscow before being destroyed by air defense systems.

While Ukraine has been bogged down in a land conflict in eastern Ukraine in which the Russians have been driving forward slowly at a heavy cost to both sides, Kyiv has also been peppering Russia with drones.

Ukraine has targeted oil refineries and airfields in an attempt to weaken Russia’s fighting potential — and also has targeted the capital a slew of times.

Ukrainian forces have been using US-manufactured HIMARS rocket systems to destroy pontoon bridges and engineering equipment in Kursk, Ukraine’s military said Wednesday.

Russian officials have said Ukraine has damaged or destroyed at least three bridges over the Seym River since Kyiv launched its incursion on Aug. 6 — advancing up to 39 miles.

The attacks on the bridges could potentially trap Russian forces between the river, the Ukrainian advance and the Ukrainian border.

Washington hasn’t publicly commented on the use of US-made weapons in Kursk region.

Italian prosecutors open shipwreck and manslaughter investigation into superyacht sinking

yachting weather app

Associated Press

ROME (AP) — Prosecutors in Italy have opened an investigation into culpable shipwreck and multiple manslaughter after a superyacht capsized during a storm off the coast of Sicily, killing seven people onboard. They included British tech magnate Mike Lynch and his daughter. Prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said no suspect has been identified as of now. He said his team will carefully consider each possible element of responsibility, including those of the ship’s captain, the crew, individuals in charge of supervision, the ship-builder and others. Investigators were also asked why the crew was almost entirely saved, except for the chef, while six passengers remained trapped in the hull.
