The Eastward Ho was available either as a sloop (shown here) or, with a bowsprit added, as a cutter. There was also a choice of motive power, including a Volvo MD-2 diesel (22 hp) or an Atomic Four (30 hp). The designer, Eldredge Mclnnis of Boston, MA, a firm started in 1926, tended to specialize in large yachts, especially motorsailers. (The firm closed in 1976 when Walter J. Mclnnis retired at age 83. Albert Eldredge had died in 1936 but was involved in sales, not design.) Even though she's less than 24 feet on deck, because of her displacement of 7,000 pounds she can use the power to punch through waves. Typically, these boats were offered with a yacht finish, teak and holly sole, teak interior, fine jointer-work, and so on. Best features: This is a top-of-the-line yacht for her size range. She is durable, beautiful to look at, and a good sailer, especially when it breezes up. Worst features: When these boats come onto the market, which is rare, they typically command a premium price. That said, a 1978 model was recently listed on the Internet for $18,000, which, after all, is not a fortune for a really nice boat.

Thinking seriously of buying a 1975 Eastward Ho 24. Having owned full-displacement full-keelers before (Westsail 32, Pacific Seacraft Flicka), I'm comfortable with the genus, but unfamiliar with this species. Anyone out there know this boat? Advice to offer? Chronic maintenance problems? Happy idiosyncrasies? Thanks, Lopezian

eastward ho sailboat

I don't know the boat personally but here is the general spec for it: EASTWARD HO 24 sailboat specifications and details on sailboatdata.com Seems like a boat with a pedigree. Also interesting is that my Tartan 27' only weighs 7200# and your Eastward Ho is rated at 7600#. Seems to have been designed and built for longer passages. Extrapolation: a boat like that (similar to mine) will not be a great light air sailor but should be able to put up with some rough conditions if you can. As for maintenance issues I'd assume the usual suspects: chain plates, mast step, soft decks, yada yada.

Caleb, thanks a million. I chased that link all around the 'Net and learned a great deal about the boat. I like her....love her....and you know where that leads....

Yes, please provide more information.

And please let us know about its sailing characteristic. As much as you can tell us. I've been wondering about the ballast/displacement ratio. It is quite high, so my concern is that construction, i.e., fiberglass thickness, is deficient, so all the weight is in lead rather than a good, thick, sturdy hull. What is your experience drilling through it? How thick is the thinnest part?

There is one on ebay now, but the seller has not answered any questions I (and maybe others) have had. Here's the ad: 24' Eastward Ho Sailboat in Sailboats | eBay Motors

24' Eastward Ho

ARCHIVED: This is a previously listed vessel and is no longer offered for sale If you would like assistance locating a similar vessel, Click Here to locate a similar boat

Designed by Eldredge-McInnis and built by Portsmouth Yacht Co., the Eastward Ho is a compact yet roomy sloop designed for family cruising in comfort. She is a proven design which combines traditional elegance with practical accommodations. Nothing has been overlooked to satisfy both the sailor and the cruising enthusiast. Her generous headroom, two berths, full galley, and enclosed head are unique on a boat of this size. Her spacious cockpit affords seats long enough for an afternoon nap or additional overnight guests. Sailing or under power she is lively and responsive with a motion reminiscent of a much larger boat. Her ample beam and sufficient ballast make her very stiff without sacrificing valuable draft.

Attabuoy  is in need of general cleaning inside and out and some cosmetic work. The keel will need some minor fiberglass work. The sails are like new. The engine turns over, but has not been operated for a number of years. Take a look and you will fall in love!

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Appears similar to the DAIMYO from the same designers. First built of wood by International Marine Corp. of Japan.
