O’ahu also known as “the gathering place,”  the third largest in size among its fellow islands in the Hawaiian chain, but it is first in population.  Over 950,000 people share Oahu’s 600 square miles of mountains and beaches – and most populous of the islands in the State of Hawai’i. Almost half inhabit the bustling city of Honolulu and nearby resort town of Waikiki. Oahu is also the most visited of all the Hawaiian islands, at approximately 4.5 to 4.7 million visitors annually.  From trendy hotels and , to the best , and plenty of nightlife, dining and , Oahu is one of the top gay destinations and perfect for LGBT travel!

O’ahu is primarily defined by the state capital of Honolulu, Pearl Harbor, and the famous beach known as Waikiki. These areas absorb tourists by thousands daily. Oahu boasts a fantastic climate, inexpensive accommodations, a large variety of shopping options, and world renown beaches – it’s fair to say the island lures in visitors from around the world. Though this may be the one fault of the island, as many are discouraged by the large crowds of Oahu and thus dismiss the island, instead visiting one of the other, less visited, islands in the chain. After all, chances are if you are staying on Oahu you too will book a room in Waikiki or Honolulu yourself. Nearly all of the island’s resorts are crammed into this small area.

Honolulu is the state’s capital and major financial center. It is also home to the main

campus of the University of Hawaii. Honolulu wasn’t always the main seat. Until 1845 the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom was located on the island of Maui. King Kamehameha III ordered the move and the Iolani Palace was built later.

But Oahu is much more than Honolulu or Waikiki – it may well be the most beautiful of all the major islands. The will help guide you  to experience the beauty that is Oahu.

Oahu, is made up of two separate but overlapping volcanoes, known as a volcanic doublet. Its asymmetrical butterfly shape is formed by two mountain ranges: the Waianae Range in the west and the Ko’olau Range in the east. Slicing through the center is the flat Leilehua Plateau. Recent, geologically speaking, volcanic eruptions in the southeastern portion of the

Photo from Hawaii State Parks

island which formed the Diamond Head, Koko Head and Punchbowl craters can be blamed for Oahu’s uneven shape.

The eastern coast of O’ahu is hemmed in by a gorgeous mountain range and boasts three of the islands best beaches. Surprisingly, you’ll find no major accommodations here, just a few vacation homes along the quaint towns that dot the coast. The eastern region offers many visitors an escape from the busting Waikiki scene while still offering the proximity to the shopping and activities of the nearby city just a half hour drive away. The jaw-dropping Ka’a’awa Valley is also located on this side of the island. It is easily recognizable as the backdrop for the hit television series “Lost.” The island has played host to a slew of films and television shows as the current CBS hit show “Hawaii 50”.
The famous north shore of O’ahu is a surfer’s paradise, especially in the winter months when the surf is up. The monster waves and laid-back atmosphere have professional surfers flocking to Banzai Pipeline and Waimea Bay to ride some of the most killer waves in the Pacific. About an hours drive from Honolulu, this region has a surprisingly unpopulated feel to it. Many miles of beaches stretch along this portion of Oahu, making it a popular haven for those looking to relax in the sun.

The western, northwestern, and central regions are where most of the island’s residents live. For the most part, there isn’t much here for the typical island visitors – just a few scattered beaches. Central Oahu does however have one of the island’s largest attractions Pearl Harbor and the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial. More than one million people a year pay their respects to the many military personnel who lost their lives during the Japanese attack. Many of these men and women and veterans of many wars are laid to rest in Punchbowl National Cemetery at Pu’owaina Crater (Punchbowl).

Beyond the sky scrapers and decidedly urban nature of the southern tip of the island is an Oahu of great natural beauty and old-time charm. For the traveler looking to experience a modern paradise, Oahu has it all – the excitement and culture of a large metropolitan city, the unspoiled beauty of tropical coastlines and verdant mountains plus everything in between.

There are over seven gay & lesbian bars in Honolulu where you can enjoy a drink, with the open windows to enjoy the fresh ocean air.  And make sure you ask your bartender about the catamaran trips as some bars offer over the weekend gay catamaran tours.

Join other world travelers on the bustling streets of cosmopolitan Honolulu.  Where every you go, allow time to savor the unique character of each part of the Island, to visit the shops, dine in the local hotspots, enjoy the gay nightlife  and take in the stunning vistas.

Waikiki and its famous gay beach, Queen’s Surf Beach are a top destination for surfing, sunning, sand and more.  Gay Waikiki awaits you and if love the beach and the nightlife, then Honolulu on Oahu is for you.  Popular, sometimes crowded yet always in vogue, the Oahu gay scene is accepting, prevalent and chock full of options for gay friendly , dining, , events, and you might just find your favorite Hawaiian to boot!

Insider’s Guide to Gay Honolulu, Hawaii

gay catamaran cruise waikiki

“Hawaii has so much aloha, so much love, that I can’t think of any other place I’d rather be,” says Oliver Cajala of The Modern Honolulu.

“Hawaii has so much aloha, so much love, that I can’t think of any other place I’d rather be,” says Oliver Cajala of The Modern Honolulu (1775 Ala Moana Blvd. Tel: 808-943-5800. www.themodernhonolulu.com ), the understatedly chic Oahu hotel that stands out as one of the island’s most urbane escapes.

“We aspire to be uncommon,” says Cajala. “So many of the hotels here are decorated with kitschy Hawaiiana, so we want to offer something different.”

Not that The Modern is entirely free of local iconography. While dominated by soothing beiges and taupes, the lobby décor comes alive with pops of color via a wall sculpture behind the front desk; crafted by artist Herbie Fletcher, it’s composed of actual surfboards that have been cracked in action, each signed by the professional surfer who rode it. The restful guest suites, with their gauzy white curtains, are visually punctuated by a rack of vibrantly hued sarongs that just beg you to get naked and turn yourself into a hula-hipped art exhibition.

“We tend to draw a pretty young sophisticated crowd,” comments Cajala, noting that The Modern originally opened as an EDITION hotel, the brand created by Marriot in conjunction with Ian Schrager. The EDITION aesthetic remains, from the airy, seductive design of the on-property Morimoto restaurant to two smart- ly landscaped pool areas, the smaller of which is on a semi-secluded adult only deck with less than six inches of water at the deep end of the pool. It’s not so much for swimming as for run-way strutting in a Speedo or bikini.

When it comes to helping his guests enjoy Oahu to the fullest, Cajala’s tips include some off-the-beaten-path gems as well as wonderful island favorites. One TripAdvisor reviewer raved that: “Oliver is the best hotel employee I’ve ever met.”

Where are the coolest places for cocktails? Right in Waikiki, I would recommend Rumfire (Sheraton Waikiki, 2255 Kalakua Ave. Tel: 808- 271-1728 www.rumfirewaikiki.com ). It’s one of the flashiest places on the island and attracts a stylish crowd from all over the world. Inside, it’s got a very sleek Las Vegas kind of vibe, which is unusual for Hawaii, and the outdoor area has spectacular views of Diamond Head and the beach. There’s a happy hour every day from three to five with drinks for as little as $6.50, and in the mid-afternoons they have a “Spiked Tea” menu, which is a fun twist on English high tea, with tea-based cocktails and pork, tofu, fish, and chicken sliders in place of the traditional finger sandwiches.

The bar here at The Modern is called The Study , and it’s especially fun to come right at opening any night. We say it’s like a sexy librarian—not quite what it first seems: At five o’clock, a wall of books in our lobby glides open to reveal a secret lounge. There’s mellow live music every night and the drinks and bites are really creative.

Also at The Modern is Addiction (Tel: 808- 943-5800. www.addictionnightclub.com ), a late-night venue that really pulls in a young, hip, and sophisticated crowd. It’s quite a scene.

Where would you recommend taking someone for a romantic dinner? After having a beautiful meal at Chef Chai (1009 Kapiolani Blvd. Tel: 808-585-0011. www.chefchai.com ), I started recommending it to guests and everyone comes back telling me how much they loved it. The food is delicious Asianfusion (prawn salad with tangerine vinaigrette, whole fresh fish with chili ginger sauce), and the presentations are creative and colorful. There’s dim lighting, which is nice for a date night, and the service is incredible.

Is there a great spa you’d suggest? The Moana Lai Spa at the Westin Moana Surfrider is a fine choice. (2365 Kalkua Ave. Tel: 808-237-2535. www.moanalanispa.com ). You can stare at the ocean waves from some of the treatment rooms, which makes it extra relaxing.

Is there a favorite gay bar that you’d suggest checking out? Most gay tourists end up at Hula’s (134 Kapahulu Ave. Tel: 808-923-0669. www.hulas.com ), which is on the second floor of the Waikiki Grand Hotel—they have drag shows, dancing, and on Saturday afternoon they run catamaran booze cruises. It’s more than 40 years old, so its very well known.

Much newer is Bacchus (408 Lewers St. Tel: 808-926-4167. www.bacchus-waikiki.com ), which is owned by the same guys who have a bear bar called the 440 in San Francisco. It’s small, but a really friendly place for a drink on a fun street with lots of little ethnic restaurants.

My personal favorite is a place that visitors don’t get to as often and it really gives you a feel- ing of local gay life. It’s called Chiko’s Tavern (930 McCully St. Tel: 808-949-5440. www.chikostavern.com ), about a ten-minute drive outside of Waikiki. They’ve got a pool table and a dart board, so it’s easy to strike up a conversation. They have karaoke some nights, which is really popular on the island. The pupus (that’s what we call appetizers) are excellent and inexpensive, in the $4 to $5 range. Try the batter- dipped mini-sausages and the Spam musubi, which is a favorite local snack: it’s a block of rice topped with a slice of Spam and wrapped in seaweed. Don’t be afraid! It’s really good.

Gay Nightlife in Honolulu: Best Bars, Clubs, & More

gay catamaran cruise waikiki

yuruphoto/Getty Images

In Hawaii, "aloha" is more than just a greeting. Aloha is a way of life, guided by the principles of mutual caring, harmony, and kindness. Perhaps because of this loving island spirit, Hawaii has a history of being one of the most gay-friendly places to visit in the U.S., and as the capital and largest city, Honolulu is the epicenter of gay life in the state.

With a metropolitan population of nearly 1 million residents, Honolulu is a far cry from a tranquil little island town. The island of Oahu is not only popular with tourists, but it's also the cultural and financial center of Hawaii. The capital city offers all types of ways for LGBT travelers to let loose, from gay bars to gay beaches. Whether you're coming with your partner, a group of friends, or on your own, you'll be living the aloha lifestyle as well long before it's time to return home.

To find Honolulu's gay bars, you'll have to venture away from downtown and head toward the famous Waikiki Beach. Honolulu's gay nightlife scene is concentrated in this area, meaning you can conveniently spend the day lounging under the sun and then head straight to the bars. And if you're staying in one of the numerous resorts in Waikiki, you can imbibe without worry and easily get back to your hotel on foot.

  • Wang Chung's : This lively gay bar in Waikiki is known for its raucous karaoke stage every night. Show off your singing talent—or lack thereof—while enjoying a tasty cocktail and laughing with friends. The bar is open until 2 a.m. every day of the week, and on Sunday mornings puts on a spectacular drag brunch.
  • Bacchus Waikiki : Self-proclaimed "friendliest gay bar" of Honolulu, Bacchus serves a nice mix of basic and top-shelf drinks, including a wide range of wines and several good beers. There's a compact main room, a smaller side seating area that's a perfect spot to hold court with a few friends, and a narrow outside balcony and railing overlooking the street below.
  • In Between Waikiki : It takes a little effort to find In Between Waikiki, a cozy little bar which is nestled in a small alleyway. This neighborhood gay lounge draws a predominantly male crowd with a conversation-friendly noise level and personable bartenders. The karaoke machine is always available, so you can jump on stage to belt out your favorite diva tune at any time of the day.

The gay dance clubs in Honolulu throw raucous parties. Two clubs in particular cater to the LGBT crowd, and both of them promise to delight guests. Hula's Bar & Lei Stand is conveniently located in Waikiki, a short walking distance from the rest of the gay bars in Honolulu. If your evening plans bring you to downtown, then Scarlet Honolulu is right around the corner.

  • Scarlet Honolulu : This campy nightclub is the premier gay dance spot in Honolulu with its two dance floors and weekly drag shows. The interior is decorated like a giant dollhouse, which only adds to the kitschy vibe. The music tends toward electronic dance or top hits, perfect for moving your body on the dance floor. Scarlet Honolulu is open Fridays and Saturdays until 2 a.m., and the Saturday drag show typically includes a visiting contestant from the television show "RuPaul's Drag Race."
  • Hula's Bar & Lei Stand : No gay bar in Honolulu is more celebrated and arguably beloved than Hula's Bar & Lei Stand, which occupies a second-story, semi-open-air perch inside the Waikiki Grand Hotel. The handsome club with a good-size dance area, a center bar, and lots of balcony seating is open from morning to late night, shifting from beach bar to lounge to nightclub depending on the time of day you visit. For an authentic gay Hawaiian experience, sign up for one of Hula's gay catamaran cruises on Saturday afternoons. It's a fun way to meet people and bring the bar out to the sea.

Most major metropolitan areas have some sort of gay neighborhood, but not many cities in the world can boast that they have a gay beach. Continue walking along Waikiki Beach toward the famous Diamond Head State Park—away from downtown—and you'll eventually come across Queen's Surf Beach, the unofficial gay seashore. The beach is open to all, but LGBT visitors especially tend to congregate on these sands. It's a great place to meet and mingle with other gay travelers before heading over to the nearby gay bars.

Throughout the month of October, enjoy all types of queer events from movie screenings and art expositions to pool parties and sing-alongs, all culminating in the Honolulu Pride Parade and Festival at the end of the month.

For over 30 years, the Honolulu Rainbow Film Festival has premiered LGBT-themed feature films, documentaries, shorts, and animations from Hawaiian filmmakers and from around the world. It's one of the longest-running and most esteemed film festivals of its kind, and it takes place in August of each year.

  • If you want to stay near the majority of gay bars, look for accommodations in Waikiki.
  • Bars and clubs in Hawaii stop serving alcohol at 2 a.m.
  • As the most populous island, Oahu offers the most options to LGBT travelers. However, if you plan to island-hop, Maui and the Big Island also enjoy their own share of gay locales worth checking out.

Explore Honolulu with Gay Travel Influencers Michael & Matt

Aloha, gay honolulu.

PHOTO BY MATTHEW SCHUELLER AND MICHAEL LINDSAY

Michael and Matt go to Oahu.

The happy, smart, and sexy duo are no strangers to readers of Out 's sister publication Out Traveler , who were introduced to the married world travelers and their meet-cute in the Spring 2022 print edition of Out Traveler . The social media savvy Schueller came out on his YouTube channel in a viral video that inspired Lindsay to come out himself and record a video reply, albeit a year later and 1,300 miles away. The rest is history, as they say.

The pair married in 2018, and when they’re not posting about their travels and life together on social media, Schueller works as a nurse and Lindsay is a practicing dentist.

We recently caught up with Michael and Matt to ask for travel tips on some of their favorite destinations.

Where do you recommend to eat?

The seafood is unmatched in Hawaii, and yet some of the best food you can get in Honolulu is often from the simplest of places. Heading to Waikiki, the first place we ate at was a convenience store by the beach. Surprisingly, even though the poké bowls are quite cheap, they are far more delicious and satisfying than many from the surrounding upscale restaurants. For more traditional Hawaiian grub, make a stop at Uncle Bo’s Pupu Bar & Grill, Ono Seafood, and Momosan Waikiki. We had an incredible experience for cocktails and small bites at the Spanish tapa restaurant, Blind Ox. We also cannot forget to mention the highly popular Marukame Udon Waikiki and Gen Korean BBQ House, but make sure to eat there with plenty of time on your hands as wait times for a table can be very long.

Where are the best places to stay?

The Royal Hawaiian along Waikiki Beach is a 5-star luxury hotel painted in pastel pink. Staying at this iconic location in the middle of everything may lend itself to crowded touristy days, but as a beachfront resort to one of the world’s most famous beaches, there’s good reason for its popularity. Not too far off the beach is the Waikiki Marriott Resort & Spa, a slightly more affordable and less crowded option that’s still close to all that Honolulu has to offer. One of the most brilliant aspects of traveling to Honolulu is the huge array of apartment and condo rentals available. Grabbing an Airbnb or VRBO can offer a highly accessible and private getaway for a much lower price point.

What’s the LGBTQ+ culture like there?

Honolulu is one of our favorite places to go simply because of the tight-knit LGBTQ + community there. In the spirit of Aloha, the community is easy-going, friendly, warm, and welcoming. There are many gay beaches, bars, and clubs in the area, and we found it fairly easy to make local friends in comparison to other places we’ve traveled. On our first day in Honolulu, we went to Kaimana’s Beach, a gay beach just down the way from Waikiki. We met a new friend there and for the rest of the week, he showed us around the island! Nowhere else have I been shown such hospitality.

Where should you grab a drink?

To start the evening with a happy hour drink, head to Lulu’s for beachside cocktails. Just around the corner, Hula’s is a very popular gay bar that many end their night at. We loved spending our evenings here, listening to Kylie Mynogue, Spice Girls, and all our pop favorites, it’s a fun and quintessentially cute place to meet others. Other popular locations include Tapas, Bacchus Waikiki, and Wang Chung’s for Karaoke!

What are the must-dos while visiting?

A great beach day might be all you need to perfect your time in Hawaii, and there are plenty of beaches to choose from on Oahu. Polo Beach is known to locals as not only an LGBTQ-friendly location but also a popular clothing-optional stretch of pristine golden sand on Oahu’s Northern coast. Lanikai and Sherwood are two of the most famous beaches on the island. Parking can be difficult, so make sure to head there earlier in the day to get a good spot. For those looking for an outdoor adventure, hike to Ka’ena Point, the westernmost edge of Oahu. Known for its remote coastal lava-crusted shoreline, Ka’ena Point’s rugged hiking trails lead to incredibly beautiful vistas providing Oahu’s largest Laysan albatross sanctuary. The hike in total is three miles to the edge, and three miles back from the starting point on the North Shore. We watched the sunset as albatrosses flew overhead, and it truly was a sight I’ll never forget.

What are the top Instagrammable spots?

Some of the best Instagrammable spots are often in between Honolulu and the beaches around the island. Along the North Shore heading back from Lanikai and Sherman beaches, cliffs surrounded by jungle create an unbelievable backdrop. The scene has been used for movies like Jurassic Park. We were stunned as we drove around the bends back to the city. We stopped at Halona Cove to find a crater-like beach surrounded by steep and rocky cliffs. Many were taking advantage of the last hours of sunlight snorkeling in the turquoise waters, but we recognized this as one of the top photography spots on the island. For another fun Instagram moment, head to Banan Beach Shack, grab a brightly colored frozen treat, and take your selfie with Waikiki’s waves and sand behind you.

What’s your favorite memory from there?

On our last day in Honolulu, some of our friends we had met during our time there on the island booked us a day cruise on a catamaran. Departing from Waikiki Beach, we sailed around the bay sipping plenty of cocktails. It was absolutely beautiful to see the city from this different perspective. Once we arrived back, we grabbed a bite to eat and continued the fun with one last night out. Walking in my flip-flops from the catamaran to the nearby bars for a night out perfectly encapsulated the laid-back spirit of Hawaii.

Map including part of northern Krasnoyarsk Krai Operational Navigation Chart C-5, 2nd edition.jpg

The krai lies in the middle of Siberia , and occupies nearly half of the Siberian Federal District , almost splitting it in half, stretching 3,000 kilometres (1,900   mi) from the Sayan Mountains in the south along the Yenisei River to the Taymyr Peninsula in the north. It borders (counting clockwise from the sea) the Sakha Republic , Irkutsk , the Tuva Republic , the Republic of Khakassia , Kemerovo , Tomsk , Tyumen Oblasts , the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug , the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug and the Kara Sea and Laptev Sea of the Arctic Ocean in the north.

The krai is located in the basin of the Arctic Ocean ; a great number of rivers that flow through the krai drain into it eventually. The main rivers of the krai are the Yenisei, and its tributaries (from south to north): the Kan , the Angara , the Podkamennaya Tunguska , the Nizhnyaya Tunguska and the Tanama .

There are also several thousand lakes in the krai. The largest lakes include Beloye, Belyo, Glubokoye , Itat, Khantayskoye , Labas, Lama , Pyasina, Taymyr , and Yessey . The rivers and lakes are rich in fish.

The climate is strongly continental with large temperature variations during the year. Long winters and short, hot summers are characteristic for the central and southern regions where most of the krai's population lives. The territory of Krasnoyarsk Krai experiences conditions of three climate belts: arctic , subarctic , and humid continental . In the north there are less than 40 days with temperature above 10   °C (50   °F) , while in the south there are 110–120 such days.

The average temperature in January is −36   °C (−32.8   °F) in the north and −18   °C (−0.4   °F) in the south. The average temperature in July is 5 to 10   °C (41 to 50   °F) in the north – where the most poleward tree line in the world is found at Ary-Mas – and +20   °C (68   °F) in the south. The annual precipitation is 316 millimeters (12.4   in) (up to 1,200 millimeters (47   in) in the foothills of the Sayan Mountains). Snow covers the central regions of the krai from early November until late March. The peaks of the Sayan Mountains higher than 2,400–2,600 metres (7,900–8,500   ft) and those of the Putorana Plateau higher than 1,000–1,300 metres (3,300–4,300   ft) are covered with permanent snow. Permafrost is absent at low altitudes south of Lesosibirsk , but as one moves north it grades from sporadic around the 58th parallel to extensive discontinuous around the 60th parallel and continuous north of the 63rd parallel .

The coastline contains several prominent peninsulas – from west to east the main ones are the Minina Peninsula , Mikhailov Peninsula , the Taymyr Peninsula (by far the largest, and itself containing the Zarya Peninsula, Oskara Peninsula and Chelyuskin Peninsula ) and the Khara-Tumus Peninsula.

There are also a large number of islands off the krai's coast, the most prominent of which are (from west to east) Sibiryakov Island , Nosok Island, Dikson Island , Vern Island, Brekhovskiye Island (in the Yenisei Gulf ), Krestovskiy Island, the Kamennye Islands , the Zveroboy Islands , the Labyrintovye Islands , the Plavnikovye Islands , Kolosovykh Island , the Mona Islands , Rykacheva Island, Gavrilova Island, Belukha and Prodolgovatyy Islands, the Nordenskiöld Archipelago , the Firnley Islands , the Heiberg Islands , Starokadomsky Island , Maly Taymyr Island , the Komsomolskaya Pravda Islands , the Faddey Islands , and the Saint Peter Islands . There are also a number of islands further out that fall under the administration of Krasnoyarsk Krai – the most prominent being Bolshoy Island, Sverdrup Island , the Izvestiy TSIK Islands , the Arkticheskiy Institut Islands , the Kirov Islands , Uyedineniya Island , Voronina Island , Severnaya Zemlya (the largest group), and Ushakov Island . The highest point of the krai is Grandiozny Peak in the Eastern Sayan Mountains at an elevation of 2,922 meters (9,587   ft) .

In the south there is a Ergaki Nature Park which is a protected area of Krasnoyarsk Krai. It contains the Western Sayan Mountains. [11] The park was established in 2005 and it covers an area of 342,873   ha (847,260 acres) . [12] It is bordered by the Yenisei highway. [13]

Mother of God-Nativity Cathedral (Krasnoyarsk) 1900 Mother of God-Nativity Cathedral (Krasnoyarsk) 1900.jpg

According to archaeologists, the first people reached Siberia circa 40,000 BC . [14] The Andronovo culture , a group of Bronze Age peoples, lived in the area around 2000–900 BC, the remains of which were discovered in 1914 near the village of Andronovo, Uzhursky District . The grave-mounds and monuments of the Scythian culture in Krasnoyarsk Krai belong to the 7th century BC and are some of the oldest in Eurasia . A prince's grave, the Kurgan Arshan, discovered in 2001, is also located in the krai.

Russian settlement of the area (mostly by Cossacks ) began in the 17th century. After the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway the Russian colonization of the area strongly increased. In 1822, the Yeniseysk Governorate was created with Krasnoyarsk as its administrative center that covered territory very similar to that of the current krai.

During both the Tsarist and the Soviet times, the territory of Krasnoyarsk Krai was used as a place of exile of political enemies, actual or alleged. The first leaders of the Soviet state, Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin , were exiled to what is now the krai in 1897–1900 and 1903, respectively. In Stalin's era, numerous Gulag camps were located in the region.

On June   30, 1908, in the basin of the Podkamennaya Tunguska River , there occurred a powerful explosion most likely to have been caused by the air burst of a large meteoroid or comet fragment at an altitude of 5–10 kilometers (3.1–6.2 miles) above the Earth's surface. The force of the explosion is estimated to be about 10–15 megatons. It flattened more than 2,000 square kilometers (490,000 acres) of pine forest and killed thousands of reindeer.

Krasnoyarsk Krai was created in 1934 after disaggregation of the West Siberian and East Siberian Krais and later included Taymyr and Evenk Autonomous Okrugs and Khakas Autonomous Oblast . In 1991, Khakassia separated from the krai and became a republic within the Russian Federation. On January   1, 2007, following a referendum on the issue held on April   17, 2005, the territories of Evenk and Taymyr Autonomous Okrugs were merged into the krai.

During the Soviet period, the high authority in the krai was shared between three persons: The first secretary of the Krasnoyarsk CPSU Committee (who in reality had the most authority), the chairman of the krai Soviet (legislative power), and the chairman of the krai Executive Committee (executive power). Since the Dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 and the demise of the CPSU , the head of the krai administration, and eventually the governor has been appointed or elected alongside the elected regional parliament .

The Charter of Krasnoyarsk Krai is the fundamental law of the region. The Legislative Assembly of Krasnoyarsk Krai is the province's regional standing legislative (representative) body. The Legislative Assembly exercises its authority by passing laws, resolutions, and other legal acts and by supervising the implementation and observance of the laws and other legal acts passed by it. The legislative assembly consists of 52 deputies. 22 of them are elected in 22 one-mandate electoral districts by plurality system , 2 in Taymyr, 2 in Evenkia, and 26 are elected by proportional system from the lists offered by political parties. The highest executive body is the Oblast Government, which includes territorial executive bodies such as district administrations, committees, and commissions that facilitate development and run the day-to-day matters of the province. The Oblast administration supports the activities of the Governor who is the highest official and acts as the guarantor of the observance of the krai Charter in accordance with the Constitution of Russia .

In December 1991, president Boris Yeltsin appointed Arkady Veprev as the first governor of Krasnoyarsk Krai. In January 1993 Yeltsin appointed Valery Zubov as the second governor of Krasnoyarsk Krai. In Krasnoyarsk Territory governor elections were called. Zubov was elected in a universal election for a five-year term. The Legislative Assembly of Krasnoyarsk Krai was created as well.

In 1998, Zubov lost in the gubernatorial election to General Aleksandr Lebed , a well-known politician in all of Russia. In 2002 Lebed died in a helicopter accident.

In 2002, Alexander Khloponin , the governor of Taymyr Autonomous Okrug and an influential businessman, was elected a governor of Krasnoyarsk Krai. In 2007, he was nominated by president Vladimir Putin for re-election, and the legislative assembly elected Khloponin for the second term.

In 2010, after Khloponin was promoted to the office of the president's envoy in the North Caucasian Federal District , Lev Kuznetsov , a businessman and politician from Khloponin's circle, became the new governor of the krai. After Kuznetsov, Viktor Tolokonsky became Governor September 2017. After Tolokonsky, Aleksandr Uss became the Governor of Krasnoyarsk Krai where he remains in the role today.

Krasnoyarsk Krai is represented in the Federation Council of Russia , the upper house of the Russian parliament by two senators. In 2007, eight deputies were elected to the State Duma from Krasnoyarsk regional lists of different political parties .

Over 95% of the cities, a majority of the industrial enterprises, and all of the agriculture are concentrated in the south of the krai.
