After graduating from the National Taiwan Ocean University with a degree in naval architecture, Lu returned to his hometown of Kaohsiung to gain experience in the yacht industry. The Taiwanese yacht industry was prospering when Lu created Horizon; however, from 1987 to 1997, Taiwan’s yachting industry encountered an unexpected recession. During this time, Horizon, unlike many other companies, adjusted its business strategy and in 1989 shifted target markets to Europe, Australia, and Asia. Horizon then redeveloped its yacht manufacturing processes, adhering to stringent yacht quality and safety requirements in Europe and Japan, earning a distinct reputation for building yachts of exceptional quality and value. Horizon’s continual progress and advancements not only established a solid yacht-building foundation but also resulted in the company’s ability to prevail over Taiwan’s economic recession.
Through the years, Lu has proved himself as a visionary in the yachting industry — in 1993, he recognized a demand for high-value megayachts and began building yachts over 80 feet. However, the Horizon factory encountered limits on production scale, so Lu began focusing on increasing production capacity through specialized processes and improving product quality. The decision to officially enter the megayacht market was a notable milestone for Horizon and moved the company forward as a luxury yacht builder.
Lu continued expanding Horizon in the following years: from 2000 to 2005, he restructured Horizon’s other three companies – Atech Composites, Vision Yachts, and Premier Yacht — and assigned each its own build concentration. The original Horizon Yacht company was also redeveloped to build a more comprehensive range of yachts. Lu then formed Horizon Group as the cohesive organization that interconnects the four companies and allows for the exchange of ideas and resources. In 2007, the Horizon Group Management center was established to help oversee and organize the Horizon Group network.
Since its inception in 1987, Horizon has emerged as the leading Asian yacht brand in the luxury megayacht market and is known throughout the industry for its sophisticated craftsmanship, superior build techniques, and innovative technology. Horizon also contributes to one-third of the Taiwan yacht industry’s total export quantity and has elevated Taiwan as one of the world’s top five luxury megayacht building nations. Manufacturer of superyacht that sank in Sicily with 22 aboard says human error to blame

The body of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch has been recovered from the wreckage of a superyacht off the coast of Sicily.
The yacht manufacturer's CEO has publicly addressed the incident, blaming the captain and crew for what he says could have been easily avoided.

Rescue crews are continuing to search the wreckage for one missing woman, while four other bodies that were recovered await identification.
The body of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch has been recovered from the wreckage of a superyacht off the coast of Sicily, as the boat's maker blamed the shipwreck on "indescribable, unreasonable errors" by the crew.
The Italian coastguard confirmed Mr Lynch's body had been recovered by rescue crews, along with four others, on Thursday, local time. They did not confirm the identities of the other recovered bodies.
Others reported missing from the yacht include the chairman of Morgan Stanley International, Jonathan Bloomer, Mr Bloomer's wife Judy, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda Morvillo.
Giovanni Costantino, CEO of the superyacht's manufacturing company Italian Sea Group, said there were no structural problems with the vessel that could have led to the shipwreck, arguing the crew were ill-prepared.
"It had absolutely no problem, it was a model for so many ships because it was so stable," he told the BBC.
"The weather alerts clearly showed the storm would have arrived at 4am, the captain should have closed every hatch, raised anchor, sailed into the wind, and lowered the keel. Then everyone could have gone back to sleep and the cruise would have happily continued."
Mr Costantino told Reuters correct emergency procedures had not been followed despite stormy weather already being forecast.
"The boat suffered a series of indescribable, unreasonable errors, the impossible happened on that boat … but it went down because it took on water. From where, the investigators will tell."
The Bayesian, a 56-metre British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early on Monday as it was moored about a kilometre offshore.
Civil protection officials said they believe the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly.
Another yacht anchored near the Bayesian escaped unharmed. The captain of the sunken yacht and other crew members have not commented publicly on the disaster, while Italian prosecutors investigating it are due to hold a press conference on Saturday.
Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived, including Mr Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter, Sofia.

Ms Golunski's husband James Emslie and New Zealand captain of the yacht James Catfield also survived.
Interior ministry official Massimo Mariani told Reuters Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah remained missing, saying she may be inside the wreck or could have been tossed into the sea as the boat sank.
Divers have struggled to find the bodies.
"We would need a crystal ball to know when we'll be able to find the next body," said Luca Cari, spokesperson for the fire rescue service.
"It's very difficult to move inside the wreckage. Moving just one metre can take up to 24 hours," he added.

Live updates: No one remembers the mast snapping before 56m superyacht Bayesian sunk, says crew
No one recalls seeing the mast snap on board the 56-metre Perini Navi sailing yacht Bayesian which sunk off the Italian island of Sicily on 19 August. The eyewitness account of a crewmember on board the vessel, which was obtained by BOAT International , said that the boat was struck by a freak weather event which led to the yacht heeling at around 20 degrees to starboard. As crewmembers were securing items, the heeling angle began to increase rapidly until the yacht started sinking.
The crewmembers who were up on deck were able to evacuate the yacht with minor injuries. The yacht is understood to have sunk in just twelve minutes, and it is believed that a "major ingress" of water from the top down would have caused the sinking, according to a captain who wishes to remain anonymous. This is based on the fact that no breaches have been reported in the yacht's hull, and the fact that the yacht should have been able to remain afloat with two flooded compartments.

The captain of the sistership to the sunken 56-metre Perini Navi sailing yacht Bayesian has said it is "very difficult to understand what could have overwhelmed a vessel of that size" and called the 56-metre Perini Navi series "bulletproof".
David Hutchinson, captain of Rosehearty , said he had taken the yacht around the world multiple times and he had "total faith in the boat". "We've been to Antarctica and Chile, and we've had her in 70 knots of wind," he says, and the vessel had never put them in a situation that felt unmanageable.
However, Hutchinson noted there were differences between Bayesian and Rosehearty ; notably, Bayesian's 74-metre mast, which would have been heavier and added increased windage. The yacht's layout was also different, with guest accommodation on Bayesian located further forward.
Who are the confirmed victims of the Bayesian disaster?
The yacht's sinking in Italy has resulted in six confirmed deaths and one additional person missing.
The names of the individuals are:
- British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, once dubbed 'Britain's Bill Gates'
- Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah
- Morgan Stanley's chairman, Jonathan Bloomer
- Judy Bloomer, wife of Morgan Stanley chairman
- Chris Morvillo, a lawyer working for London-based law firm Clifford Chance
- Neda Morvillo, an American jewellery designer and Chris' wife
It is understood that the yacht was being used to celebrate Lynch's recent victory in a 13-year £8 billion fraud acquittal.

- A search and rescue is currently underway for one missing person in the waters off Palermo on the Italian island of Sicily.
- According to Reuters, five bodies have now been found in the sunken yacht, but their identities have not been revealed. One further person was found immediately after the yacht sunk. One person is still unaccounted for.
- Mike Lynch, a British technology entrepreneur who co-founded Autonomy Corporation and founded Invoke Capital, is among the missing.
- Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, and a one-year-old are among the fifteen people rescued along with Bayesian' s captain, James Cutfield.
- Palermo Coastguard has confirmed one body that has been recovered is that of the yacht's chef.
- Another sailing vessel in the area, the 42-metre Sir Robert Baden Powell , stepped in to offer assistance in the initial rescue.
- Divers have been able to reach Bayesian' s sunken hull, which lies at 45 metres of depth about half a mile from the coast. The yacht had the largest aluminium masts of any sailing yacht on the water.
- Eyewitnesses in the area reported "hurricane" conditions off the coast but local weather websites did not indicate any severe squall, which suggests that the weather event was not forecast.
- At around 5am local time on 19 August, Bayesian was hit by bad weather and sunk. The sailing yacht was anchored or idle at the time of the incident.
Built in Italy by renowned builder Perini Navi and delivered in 2008, the yacht's naval architecture was developed by Ron Holland Design while the interior design is by Rémi Tessier . She was formerly known as Salute and was last refitted in 2016. She was listed for sale earlier this year, according to BOATPro . The yacht had accommodation for nine guests and 12 crew.

Former Post Office software supplier plots London stock market return

A supplier of software to post offices around the world is plotting a return to the London stock market six years after it was taken private.
Sky News has learnt that Escher Group, which had long-term contracts with Fujitsu, the Japanese giant which was at the centre of the Horizon IT scandal , is working with bankers on a potential initial public offering (IPO).
City sources said that a flotation could take place late this year, although a 2025 listing was more likely.

Singer Capital Markets has been appointed to work on the plans.
A spokeswoman for Escher declined to comment on the timing or details of an IPO, but said it was not currently a supplier to the UK Post Office.
The company's current customers include the US postal service, she added.

REUTERS/Guglielmo Mangiapane PORTICELLO, Italy (Reuters) -The body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch was retrieved on Thursday from the wreck of his family yacht that sank this week off the coast of Sicily during a violent storm, a senior Italian official said. Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah is still unaccounted for, interior ministry official Massimo Mariani told Reuters after being briefed by the emergency services. The British-flagged Bayesian, a 56-metre-long (184-foot) superyacht carrying 22 passengers and crew, was anchored off the port of Porticello, near Palermo, when it disappeared beneath the waves in minutes after bad weather struck early Monday. Lynch, 59, was one of the UK's best-known tech entrepreneurs and had invited friends to join him on the yacht to celebrate his acquittal in June in a U.S. fraud trial. Seven people are believed to have died in the disaster while 15 survived, including Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, who is the owner of the Bayesian. Italian officials confirmed they had retrieved on Wednesday the bodies of Jonathan Bloomer, a non-executive chair of Morgan Stanley International, and Christopher Morvillo of the law firm Clifford Chance, alongside their wives, Judy Bloomer and Neda Morvillo. The body of the onboard chef, Canadian-Antiguan national Recaldo Thomas, was recovered near the wreck on Monday. Mariani said it was possible that Hannah Lynch's body was not in the boat, but might have been swept out to sea. Fire brigade spokesperson Luca Cari said if her body was still in the yacht it could take time to find, given the difficulty divers were having in accessing all areas of the boat, which is lying on its side at a depth of 50 metres (165 feet). A judicial investigation has been opened into the disaster, which has baffled naval marine experts, who say a boat like the Bayesian, built by Italian high-end yacht manufacturer Perini, should have withstood the storm. Giovanni Costantino, CEO of the Italian Sea Group, which owns Perini, told Italian media the Bayesian was "one of the safest boats in the world" and blamed the crew for failing to follow correct safety procedures. The captain, James Cutfield, and his eight surviving crew members, have made no public comment on the disaster. The prosecutor leading the investigation, Ambrogio Cartosio, has scheduled a press conference for Saturday. CHALLENGING CONDITIONS Specialist rescuers have been searching inside the hull of the sunken yacht for the past three days in what they said were extremely challenging conditions due to the depth and the narrowness of the places that the divers are scouring. The fire brigade compared the efforts to those that were carried out, on a larger scale, for the Costa Concordia, a luxury cruise liner that capsized off the Italian island of Giglio in January 2012, killing 32 people. Once the final body is recovered, experts will have to decide whether, or how, to salvage the vessel. The CEO of Italian Sea Group said the yacht's automatic tracking system suggested that it took 16 minutes from the moment the storm first hit to the sinking. He said it was clear the ship took in large amounts of water, adding that investigators would need to see what doorways or hatches might have been left open, focusing notably on a main door located on the left side of the yacht. "A Perini boat survived the Category 5 Katrina hurricane. Do you think one couldn't survive a waterspout here," he told Corriere della Sera newspaper, referring to a type of tornado which is believed to have hit the Bayesian. Under maritime law, a captain has full responsibility for the ship and the crew, as well as the safety of all those aboard. The captain of the Costa Concordia, Francesco Schettino, is serving a 16-year prison term for his role in the 2012 disaster after he admitted to sailing too close to underwater rocks.
