Kings Ametyst cutter

Full specification

Wooden ships comments on this Kings Ametyst cutter

The Kings Ametyst cutter was a popular and successful racing yacht designed for RORC Class III by the little known Polish designers Z.J. Milewski and M.F. Plucinski.  They were looking to design a yacht that could be constructed at a low price so as to give keen a sailors a competitive yacht at affordable prices.  As part of the original advertising, some of the main features of the yacht were described as:

  • Light but strong and reliable construction
  • Graceful silhouette
  • Speed and manoeuvrability combined with stiff and comfortable behaviour at sea
  • Comfortable cruising accommodation for five persons
  • Sail plan suitable for racing but easily operated when single handed
  • Exceptionally high standard of workmanship and finish

The yachts were built in Poland, an area that was becoming known for producing quality boats at very reasonable prices, and the design was very modern and forward thinking.  While many designers were still producing long keeled yachts, albeit with a more cut away forefoot than in previous decades,  the Kings Ametyst had a split fin keel and skeg hung rudder, reducing her wetted surface area and improving performance.  This type of design became common place in later years, but not all designers at the time were bold enough to step away from the conventional ideas of underwater profile.

The centre cockpit allows the boat to be split with a separate aft cabin giving three different living areas which is useful for both cruising and racing.

The design has been well proven over the years, including a 6000Nm single handed voyage from Poland to the USA in 1963 by American yachtsman Stanley Jablonski, which included a run in with Hurricane Beulah.

2010 survey available.

Sail area                                   490sq.ft.

ROC rating                               22.2 ft.

This example was built in 1965and is hull number 50.  In her present 25 year ownership she has voyaged to the Mediterranean and underwent a major refit starting in 1995.

Kings Ametyst cutter

Planked in 7/8” West African mahogany copper rivet fastened to alternating steam bent and laminated oak frames.  Hood ends are bronze screwed.  Keelson, stem and stern post are all laminated from white oak and African mahogany.

Mixture of grown oak and galvanised strap floors held through the back bone with galvanised bolts.

In the 1995 refit, all metal floors were removed and straps were replaced with new galvanised ones and new floor bolts.  All necessary repairs carried out to frames beneath the floors.

Fin keel constructed of laminated white oak, mahogany and pine with a 1.7 ton cast iron ballast keel.

The underwater hull was then stripped to bare wood, left to dry for a long period, and sheathed with epoxy and glass cloth under the supervision of the surveyor using specifications provided by SP Resins.  This has created a hull that makes no water, is absolutely stiff and has no worries of suffering damage in tropical waters.

Yacht laid 5/8” teak deck over a ¼” marine plywood subdeck.  The deck seams were raked out and re-payed with Sikaflex in 1995.

Varnished mahogany coachroof with recessed Perspex windows.

Self draining cockpit , copper lined, with mahogany thwarts.  Cockpit well is deep and protected with comfortable seating and easy access over the bridge deck to the main cabin.

Tiller steering with the tiller protruding over the top of the aft cabin coachroof.

Decent amount of working deck space all round.  Twin roller stem head fitting with twin fairleads and a pair of large mooring cleats.  Stainless pulpit, guard wires and stanchions all round.

Varnished mahogany forehatch with a low teak toe rail all round.

Bermudan cutter rig on deck stepped varnished spruce mast.  Mast was new in 1989 by Noble Spars.

Roller reefing varnished boom with bronze goose neck and reefing mechanism.

Stainless steel standing rigging new in 2010 with stainless rigging screws to internal stainless chainplates.  Twin lower shrouds, single intermediate and single capshroud.  Twin back stay, inner forestay and outer forestay.

All running rigging led back to the cockpit for ease of handling.

Mainsail           Penrose Sails                236sq’             4 yrs old                      Very good

Genoa              Penrose Sails                315sq’             3 yrs old                      Very Good A large wardrobe of older sails, all in good condition, including several staysails and jibs, Yankee, Spinnaker, Storm Jib and trysail.

M20 Perkins Perama 18hp diesel installed new in 1992.  Very smooth and tidy 3cyl marine diesel that has been well maintained and serviced regularly.

Twin lever control Hurth gearbox with a centre line stainless steel shaft to a 3 blade bronze propeller gives 5 knots cruising speed at 1-2 litre/hour.

Shaft and Flexi coupling new in 2005.

14 gallon stainless steel diesel tank under the cockpit sole.

3 x 12 volt batteries in an original lead lined battery box.  Dedicated engine start battery with two domestics.

Charging from engine alternator and shore power system with sterling intelligent charger.

Accommodation                      5 berths

These little yachts have an enormous amount of useable interior volume for a 33’ boat.  The benefit of the centre cockpit is that it splits the accommodation into 3 separate areas which is very useful whether racing or cruising.

The aft cabin is entered through the sliding hatch with steps down. U-shaped berths give ample space for 2 people with the tiller stock between the berths.  Sitting headroom throughout the aft cabin.

Steps down over the bridge deck into the main cabin.  Engine is recessed behind the companion steps and under the cockpit sole.  To starboard is a varnished drop leaf mahogany table with seating around against the hull sides.

Galley to port with a small work surface and single stainless steel sink which drains overboard.  2 burner gas stove recessed into a gap under the deck head.  Water from 2 x 35 gallon welded plastic water tanks each side under the cockpit.  Electric pressure pump with hot and cold running water.

Heads compartment to port with a manually pumped sea toilet

Hull is lined throughout with varnished mahogany slats.

Forward cabin through a central passageway.  Twin v-berths with large storage lockers beneath and full height hanging lockers.  Anchor locker forward of the berths.  Forward cabin is again panelled with varnished mahogany slats.

A King\'s cruiser, any info, Hi all, Anybody know or heard of a king's cruiser , its about 28-29ft longkeel, don't know what year. Are they a good boat? I'v looked on the net but can't seem to find anything about them. Cheers, Geordie

Re: A King\'s cruiser, any info, I remember them, centre cockpit, I think were were carvel (ie wood) and built in Europe, maybe East Germany. Dates back to my late teens - that would be late '60's. Sorry no more info - I think there was a stable mate called the Kings Amethyst also. Get hold of a copy of Bristows Book of Yachts for that era, should be in there.

Re: A King\'s cruiser, any info, Hi Dont know much about them except there was a Kings 29 berthed in Bangor marina for a few years. I look to be a proper sea boat long keel etc think it was for sale for around 13k. Hope this is of some help. Andrew

Re: Kingscruiser!! Swedish, GRP, semi long keel, up to 33ft built 70's 80's? I believe Ancasta had one for sale a few months ago. There's one on my pontoon. If its still in the water I'll check it out.

Re: A King\'s cruiser, any info, Hi all, Thanks for all the info on this boat, there is one up here in orkney (grp one) and it may be coming on the market. Thank again for all your help, Geordie

Re: A King\'s cruiser, any info, Mate of mine (sadly deceased) had one for about 20yrs. Almost bought it from him. Sailed like a dream & good heavy weather boat. Good build quality. I got 'Boat Test' details from YBW at the time for the 29' & they mentioned problem going astern in a straight line (as with many long keel boats- although my mate thought this was rubbish). Apparantly it was designed (& built I thought) by either Halberg or Rassy (can't remember which) of HR fame, so good parentage.

Re: A King\'s cruiser, any info, I have had a Kings Cruiser 29 for just under six years. Good, solid boat. Only real problems I have noted or heard of are compression stress around the deck stepped mast (if it is glassfibre version). Also I am beginning to wonder about the attatchment points for the shrouds, which are mounted in the middle of the sidedecks without any visible reinforcement other than a slight thickening of the deck... I have some osmosis but the hull is about two centimetres thick so I'm pretending I havent seen it /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Was out in strong gale with stronger gusts last week and got laid flat, proving how bad furling genoas are in that much wind. If you have a family, two problems: lack of space and the fact that she sails lying on her ear. Heads is tiny and awkward to get into as well; I have taken off the door! Not too good cockpit drains as their diameter is a bit small and the bottom of the cockpit is v. close to waterline. The boats are good, strong boats built by Fiskars AB of Finland, who also made the Kings Cruiser 33 and Finnfire 33 3/4 ton cup boat. An excellent boat to make stupid mistakes in, and should last for a few years yet. Was originally a long keel wooden design from Sweden, many exported to USA, modified by fiskars when they took it over (early 1970s?) and built in glassfibre. Anything else you need to know, give me a call.

Re: A King\'s cruiser, any info, From an old 1976ish catalogue......... ...was originally custom built in wood is now produced in GRP, reflecting the latest thinking from her designer, Tord Sunden. Her hull design has a shallow fin keel and far aft spade rudder for maximum turning movement and an exceptionally fine bow entry. She is designed to combine high performance with comfortable family cruising. The cockpit is large and self bailing, has a teak grating and room for the whole family. Pulpit, pushpit and stainless steel lifelines together with a fitted diesel engine are standard. Below, tyhe forecabin with 2 berths is separated fron the saloon by a W.C. compartment to starboard and a hanging locker to port. The saloon is fitted out in Aromosia teak, fully carpeted and curtained. It was built in Finland by Turun Veneveistamo oy Abo Batvarf A/B....I'll leave you to work out how to pronounce it!

Re: A King\'s cruiser, any info, Ah well seems I confused the Cruiser and the Amethyst. I'll increase my dosage for my dotage

  • 24 Jan 2005

Re: A King\'s cruiser, any info, I've owned a Kings Cruiser 29 for the last four or five years and had a stem to stern refit carried out in 2000. I reckon that your other correspondents have been pretty accurate in their comments, for the most part. The enduring impression of the boat to me and to others has always been the sweet lines of the hull and how that translates positively into handling. The designer Tord Sunden was, of course, also the designer of the Folkboat and the connection shows, much more I think than in the Contessa 26, reputedly inspired by Sunden's design. Downsides like 'compact' accommodation I can live with. Unfortunately over working and under sailing may soon lead to us parting company...........anyone interested?

My dad bought kings cruiser off the floor, new york boat show, 19?? She had a varnished hull-beautiful. My grandfather had a railway so she could be pulled as needed. He won King's cruiser race in Annapolis, and trophy was beautiful bell with intricate knot for clanger. He donated it to Hampton Yacht Club, where he was Commodore. I'd love to connect with anyone who's familiar with this sweet yacht or was in the Bay boating family in the 60's.

Broker's Comments

Only a handful of the original 75 Polish built wooden cruisers still exist. Built by Communist shipbuilders in Poland, there were designed to show the West that they could build quality yachts and were RORC III class yachts with a Bermudan cutter rig. In their day they were very up-market with all the latest fixtures and fittings. Scandinavian builders at the time marvelled at the high quality of wood-crafting of these yachts.

This particular example is part way through a complete restoration with much of the work done already to a high quality. A great opportunity exists for a skilled person to finish the work and own a beautiful wooden yacht and a piece of Cold War yachting history.

The King’s Yacht Britannia: Adrian Morgan delves into the Big Class

Adrian Morgan

The King’s yacht Britannia: Adrian Morgan delves into this famous yacht’s history, and asks, will the Big Class ever return?

Where is britannia.

Racing alongside the revived J Class, Fifes and Herreshoffs gracing the classic circuit, a reincarnation of the most famous yacht of them all is conspicuously absent: K1, Britannia, the Kings’ yacht, the remains of which lie, according to HMS Winchester’s log, 40 fathoms down in the deeps off St Catherine’s Point on the Isle of Wight , at Lat 50 34 18 N, Long 1 1 0 W’, swept by fierce currents for nearly 90 years.

Her stemhead was recovered by a lobster fisherman, and sonar traces appeared to show a considerable portion of the hull remained intact in a natural hollow on the sea bed, but that was a long time ago. A replica, built in Russia, languishes, unfinished.

Britannia’s History

Launched in 1893, in a career spanning over 40 years and 635 races, Britannia won 231 firsts out of a total of 360 prizes, a record unlikely ever to be rivalled. In contrast to any of the original or replica Js, of which Ranger and Endeavour won only a handful of races, notably in the rarefied, light wind arena of the America’s Cup , Britannia excelled in strong weather albeit once, under an overly tall new bermudan rig, hit by a violent squall,  she took charge, threatening to drive herself ashore. The King’s sailing master, Sir Philip Hunloke, managed to wrestle her back and she was retired for the season.

I have a soft spot for K1, having found the log entry at the records office in Kew of that destroyer – a fitting name for her final escort – and spoken to one of the last men to have been aboard her that July night in 1936 off the Wight. It was torpedoman Cyril Bodsworth, satchel of explosives over his shoulder, who placed some of the shaped charges in her bilge and deckhead that sent her to the bottom. Hunloke: “It was grim.”

She didn’t go down quite as planned, to the dismay of those tasked with her sinking, and a considerable time was spent collecting debris that might have been washed ashore as royal souvenirs. Finally Bodsworth recalled hearing a ‘gentle pop’ as  a piece of polished pine deck planking shot up Excalibur-like from the depths, ‘carving a gentle parabola’ before splashing away to starboard, caught in the beam of Winchester’s searchlight. They never found it. He however had managed to “salvage” a mahogany pin from the bottle cabinet in the panelled saloon before leaping for Winchester’s decks.

Of the three half models I have, one is America, the other Sally, my old boat, launched a year after the third, Britannia, was scuttled, all made by Peter Ward in Poole. Britannia’s hull was carved out of reclaimed Honduras mahogany from the table at the old Lloyd’s building, still bearing the marks of the pins that once held the plans down for the likes of Britannia to be laid out for scrutiny. Naturally Lloyds’ A1, she was, in the words of her biographer, John Irving, built light and strong, her structure as if “woven together… a better balanced and better built vessel never crossed the starting line.”

Fit for a King

Designed by George Watson, and launched at Henderson’s yard on the Clyde for George V’s father King Edward VII, then Prince of Wales, 121ft 6in overall, as a gaff cutter she originally carried 10,000 square feet of racing canvas on a lofty 142ft 3ton Oregon pine mast. Never a J, she was altered in the last of her seven iterations to comply with a class against which she raced in her final years.

The story of her career is told in poignant style by Irving in The Kings’ Britannia, the apostrophe reflecting her ownership by three successive kings, the last of whom, Edward VIII was more interested in golf than sailing, famously using her elegant stern to tee off into the The Solent.

A Britannia Replica

How would any replica fare today against Shamrock, Ranger, Velsheda, Svea, Rainbow, Lionheart, Endeavour, Hanuman and Topaz? It seems a pity that the most famous of the so-called Big Class, immortalised by Beken racing alongside her peers, remains just a memory and a collection of artifacts, donated to various yacht club under whose flag she raced in her heyday. There can be no shortage of millionaires with the wherewithal. Maybe her racing record and royal pedigree are just too daunting.
