Oyster Yachts announces investment in new production facility
Tuesday April 6th, 2021
The company’s latest 50 foot Oyster 495 will be built at Hythe’s historic flying boat building in Southampton.
One of the UK’s iconic yacht manufacturers, Oyster Yachts , is undertaking a considerable expansion programme. The company is acquiring an additional 27,000 sq ft at the Hythe Marine Park, Southampton, which will be used to create a state-of-the-art production facility for the new Oyster 495 yacht.
Oyster’s Owner and CEO Richard Hadida says, “with several Oyster 495s already sold, investment in this dedicated production facility fits seamlessly with our growth strategy. We have great plans for Hythe Marine Park, this location is already a centre of excellence for boat building and it is the ideal location for our expansion of Oyster.”
Oyster Yachts is moving into the historic Grade II listed buildings known locally as the Admiralty Shed or the Flying Boat Hangar, which produced sea planes for World War 1, before becoming a key facility for Vickers Supermarine and later the maintenance base for the pioneering Empire flying boats. More recently, it saw the production of the test boats for the 2017 America’s Cup campaign and Alex Thompson’s 2020 Vendee Globe racing yacht.
This announcement sees Oyster Yachts increasing its existing facilities by 70%, supporting the company’s ongoing investment and growth strategy in the UK. To accommodate the expansion Oyster, will be increasing its Southampton workforce by a further 70 employees. The expansion in Hythe is seen as a positive development for new talent in the area. Awarded Employer of the Year by City College Southampton in 2021, the company is invested in developing new talent which led to the creation of its own Oyster Apprenticeship Academy. The Academy ensures time-honoured craftmanship skills and techniques are passed onto new and younger generations to ensure Great British boat building trades are sustained.
Southampton-based expansion follows on from growth at Oyster’s manufacturing facilities in Wroxham and the creation of a specialist technology centre in Ashmanhaugh, both in Norfolk.
The expansion into new premises at Hythe is being overseen by Oyster’s newly appointed Chief Operations Officer, Peter Hamlyn. Peter added “The Hythe facility will allow us to exploit production of the 495 in innovative new ways, combining new technology to complement our industry leading quality and hand-finished craftmanship for which Oyster is world renowned. This commitment is a huge boost for the local boat building community which will see further investment and job opportunities from a world class boatbuilder like Oyster Yachts.”

Oyster Yachts sails back to profit after remarkable turnaround
The luxury yacht manufacturer sailed into the black with a 29 per cent year-on-year increase in turnover to £56.4 million in 2023. Hadida has invested heavily in the business to guarantee its long-term future.
The company achieved a profitable month in January and expects an overall Q4 profit for the year ending 2024. Recently appointed CEO Ashley Highfield has also highlighted major investments to enhance the customer experience, plus upgrades to the Oyster World Rally.
The company returned to profit following heavy investment in manufacturing facilities, staff and new support services. The company makes blue water sailing yachts; after launching a record 32 yachts in 2022, Oyster maintained full occupancy of all its shipyard’s build bays during FY23.
During that time, it grew staff by a third to increase skills and production capability across its three UK manufacturing sites: Saxon Wharf and Hythe Marine Park in Southampton and Wroxham in Norfolk.
It also expanded its customer services, with a global service network, refit operation, unrivalled after-sales support, crew, and charter services. Hadida, the owner and chair made a £14.5m additional investment to enable the expansion of the business.
This led to a successive record year for production, brokerage sales, and charters, as Oyster looks to continue building market share and consolidate its position as the go-to luxury blue water yachting brand.
The investment in new models, facilities and customer services explains an underlying operating loss of £16.8m in the YE23 accounts – during the fifth year of renewal for the business since Hadida stepped in to save the brand.
Ashley Highfield said: “Margins have continued to grow, and we have achieved positive EBITDA in recent months, which we expect to continue. We are increasing investment in our yachts, with focus on flawless quality and craftsmanship, to ensure they deliver unforgettable adventures where lifelong memories are made.
“We are confident Oyster is now in a strong position and has the resources and facilities to service our vessels world-wide and provide owners with truly personalised support.
“Investing heavily in the founding principles of Oyster Yachts is translating into stronger business results, whilst offering owners a lifetime of adventure, backed up by truly world-class service and support.”
With the Oyster World Rally 2026-27 already fully subscribed, it has recently announced the Oyster World Rally 2028-29. With only 30 places, demand is expected to be high.
The Oyster World Rally is a unique, fully supported circumnavigation of the planet, covering 27,000 nautical miles, 27 destinations, and 16 months in a single adventure, exclusively for Oyster owners. Oyster Yachts have completed over 20 million blue water sailing miles and over 100 circumnavigations.
Oyster Yachts returns to profit after significant year of growth

- May 10, 2024
The British luxury yacht builder Oyster Yachts has announced a return to profit, credited to substantial investments in production facilities, personnel, and new support services. According to a company statement, the latest financial data for January 2024 show a positive trend, which will be published next year. CEO Ashley Highfield anticipates continued margin growth and profitability in the fourth quarter of 2024.
The Southampton-based company, which builds blue water sailing yachts, showed a 29 per cent year-on-year increase in turnover to £56.4m in recently released financial results for 2022-2023.
Meanwhile, Oyster Yachts is striving to continue gaining market share and solidify its position as a leading brand for blue water luxury vessels . The investment in new models, facilities and customer services explains an underlying operating loss of £16.8m in the YE23 accounts – during the fifth year of renewal for the business since existing Oyster Yacht owner Richard Hadida stepped in to save a beloved British brand.
Ashley Highfield, CEO of Oyster Yachts, said: “Margins have continued to grow, and we have achieved positive EBITDA in recent months, which we expect to continue. We are increasing investment in our yachts, with focus on flawless quality and craftsmanship, to ensure they deliver unforgettable adventures where lifelong memories are made. We are confident Oyster is now in a strong position and has the resources and facilities to service our vessels world-wide and provide owners with truly personalised support. Oyster yachts to invest in new production facility.
One of the UK’s iconic yacht manufacturers, Oyster Yachts, is undertaking a considerable expansion programme. The company is acquiring an additional 27,000 sq. ft at the Hythe Marine Park in Southampton, which will be used to create a state-of-the-art production facility for the new Oyster 495 yacht.
Oyster Yachts is moving into the historic Grade II listed buildings known locally as the Admiralty Shed or the Flying Boat Hangar, which produced seaplanes for World War I, before becoming a key facility for Vickers Supermarine and later the maintenance base for the pioneering Empire flying boats. More recently it saw the production of the test boats for the 2017 America’s Cup campaign and Alex Thompson’s 2020 Vendee Globe racing yacht.
The announcement sees Oyster Yachts increasing its existing facilities by 70%, supporting the company’s ongoing investment and growth strategy in the UK. To accommodate the expansion, Oyster will be increasing its Southampton workforce by a further 70 employees.

Oyster’s owner and CEO, Richard Hadida , said: “With several Oyster 495s already sold, investment in this dedicated production facility fits seamlessly with our growth strategy. We have great plans for Hythe Marine Park, this location is already a centre of excellence for boat building, and it is the ideal location for our expansion of Oyster.”
Awarded Employer of the Year by City College Southampton in 2021, the company is invested in developing new talent which led to the creation of its own Oyster Apprenticeship Academy. The Academy ensures time-honoured craftsmanship skills and techniques are passed onto new and younger generations to ensure Great British boat building trades are sustained.
The Southampton-based expansion follows on from growth at Oyster’s manufacturing facilities in Wroxham, and the creation of a specialist technology centre in Ashmanhaugh, both in Norfolk.
The expansion into new premises at Hythe is being overseen by Oyster’s newly appointed chief operations officer, Peter Hamlyn . Peter added “The Hythe facility will allow us to exploit production of the 495 in innovative new ways, combining new technology to complement our industry leading quality and hand finished craftsmanship which Oyster is world renown. This commitment is a huge boost for the local boat building community which will see further investment and job opportunities from a world class boatbuilder like Oyster Yachts.”

Oyster Yachts announces return to profit
Friday, April 5th, 2024
Written by: Marine Industry News
British yacht manufacturer Oyster Yachts has announced a return to profit following an increase in turnover in 2023.
The Southampton-based company, which makes blue water sailing yachts, showed a 29 per cent year-on-year increase in turnover to £56.4m in recently released financial results for 2022-2023.
The latest financial figures for January 2024, which will be published next year, show a profitable month — and Oyster says it expects an overall Q4 profit for YE 2024.
After launching a record 32 yachts in 2022, Oyster says it also maintained full occupancy of all its shipyard’s build bays during FY23.
Recently appointed CEO Ashley Highfield expects margins to continue to grow. He highlights major investments the firm has made to enhance the customer experience, plus upgrades to the Oyster World Rally.
Oyster grew its staff by a third during FY23 across its three UK manufacturing sites: Saxon Wharf and Hythe Marine Park in Southampton and Wroxham in Norfolk.
Owner and chairman Richard Hadida, who acquired Oyster Yachts in 2018, made a £14.5m additional investment to expand the business.
This led to a successive record year for production, brokerage sales, and charters, according to Oyster.
The investment in new models, facilities and customer services explains an underlying operating loss of £16.8m in the YE23 accounts — during the fifth year of renewal for the business since existing Oyster Yacht owner Richard Hadida stepped in to save a beloved British brand.
“Margins have continued to grow, and we have achieved positive EBITDA in recent months, which we expect to continue,” says Highfield. “We are increasing investment in our yachts, with a focus on flawless quality and craftsmanship, to ensure they deliver unforgettable adventures where lifelong memories are made.
“We are confident Oyster is now in a strong position and has the resources and facilities to service our vessels worldwide and provide owners with truly personalised support.
“Investing heavily in the founding principles of Oyster Yachts is translating into stronger business results, whilst offering owners a lifetime of adventure, backed up by truly world-class service and support.”

Oyster Yachts returns to profit
The british shipyard turned a profit in q1 2024, following a record number of launches and increase in investments over the past two years….
Southampton-based sailing yachts builder Oyster Yachts has reported a return to profitability after a challenging period, bolstered by a surge in turnover during 2023, with reports suggesting a successful financial quarter ending March 2024.
The firm has recently shown signs of significant progress after enduring financial challenges. Despite reporting a loss of £16.8 million in the 12 months leading up to March 2023, the company witnessed a 29% increase in turnover, reaching £56.4 million in the same period.
After launching a record 32 yachts in 2022, Oyster Yachts says it also maintained full occupancy of all its shipyard’s build bays during the 2023 financial year, as well as growing its staff by a third across its three construction sites in the UK: Saxon Wharf and Hythe Marine Park in Southampton and Wroxham in Norfolk.
This development follows a period of restructuring and investment efforts initiated after facing financial difficulties. Owner and chairman Richard Hadida, who acquired Oyster Yachts in 2018, made a £14.5m additional investment to expand the business after saving it from collapse.
Looking ahead, Oyster says it expects an overall profit for the 2024 year.

Spring 2021 - Oyster Update
Dear friends,
I hope you have continued to keep safe and well. It’s been a tough winter for many of us in the Northern Hemisphere, whilst on the other side of the world another exciting sailing season draws to a close. Here, with the easing of lockdown on the horizon and the first signs of spring in the air, the promise of freedom in a new sailing season is in reach. I’m sure, like me, you can’t wait to get out on the water again.
When the world ground to a halt this time last year, we had no idea of how things would play out. Much to everyone’s surprise however, it has been one of our busiest years ever, with the pace ramping up since my last update at Christmas. As a result, my update is a bit longer than usual, but I wanted to share with you all the exciting things that have been going on.
A new 50 foot benchmark
The big news is the announcement of our latest addition to the fleet: the stunning 50 foot Oyster 495 . We have already sold several off plan and I’m delighted to announce we’re opening a new, dedicated production facility in Hythe, Southampton to build this model. The site is steeped in history. It was once the home of the pioneering Imperial Airways Empire Flying Boats, so it’s fitting that we will build our latest adventure machine here. We have great plans for Hythe Marine Park, already a centre of excellence for boat building, it is the ideal location for our expansion.
New Oysters
As I mentioned above, it’s been a year of surprises and in terms of boat sales across our new yacht range and brokerage, the only word to describe it is ‘exceptional’. I’m very excited about the launch of the Oyster 595 this summer – she has impressed off plan, with nine delighted owners in build before the first has even touched the water. Our award winning 565 (now our most successful model to date), continues to capture the imagination of sailors around the world, with 17 hulls now sold. The rest of the fleet has sold well too, including sales of 675, 745 and the model closest to my heart, the Oyster 885. We will begin construction of hull 15 in early 2022 and the first 885GT hull and deck has arrived in Southampton for her fit out. You can find more information on our stunning new yacht range here or contact our sales team who would be delighted to help.
Building from strength to strength
We’ve continued to invest in building a business with a long-term sustainable and profitable future for the next generation of Oyster owners. The order book has swelled and the build bays are all occupied, which is driving investment in expansion of the team and facilities. As well as the Hythe site, we’re investing in Wroxham to increase capacity for the Oyster 565 and 595.
Refining production of the world’s finest bluewater yachts
I’m really excited to welcome our new COO Peter Hamlyn, whose arrival couldn’t be more timely. He’s already made a positive impact on production and we expect to see build times reduce, with more build slots becoming available under his guidance. As a master craftsman himself, his priority is maintaining our outstanding quality and craftmanship. He’s looking at ways we can use new technology to complement the outstanding quality of our craftsmanship whilst accelerating production.
Investment in the future
Higher demand and new facilities mean we have to grow our team too. It goes without saying, I am extremely proud of our team and what they have achieved this year – it’s great to see a host of new talent coming onboard. By the summer, the team will have grown from 300 a year ago to 460. My passion for maintaining and growing these skills has led me to launch the Oyster Apprenticeship Academy . This will ensure we have the skills to sustain the Great British boat building trades and techniques, so that future generations of sailors will be able to enjoy their own Oyster adventures.
The voyage of a lifetime
The 2022-23 Oyster World Rally was hugely oversubscribed so, in response, we have just launched the 2024-25 rally to satisfy that demand. A few slots still remain for the 2024 adventure, so don’t miss out if you’ve been dreaming of a circumnavigation. Join us on this fully-supported lap of the planet and, if you need inspiration, come along to our next webinar on 8th April or read our past circumnavigators’ stories here . These rallies epitomise everything an Oyster yacht has to offer. Our well-provisioned, robust, high-quality yachts are the perfect adventure machines. They will take you to places others cannot reach and give you experiences you will remember for a lifetime.
Welcoming new owners to the family
Over the last 12 months, it’s been fantastic to have welcomed lots of new owners to the Oyster family. Our brokerage team has been inundated and their ability to pull off complex international deals seamlessly, through lockdowns and the challenges of Brexit, has been remarkable. If you are looking to upgrade, it’s a great time to sell your Oyster, thanks to high residuals and demand for boats. And if you’re thinking of buying, talk to the guys at Oyster Brokerage – their depth of knowledge and experience is unsurpassed, with a choice of yachts of every size and budget.
Experience Oyster for yourself
Chartering is a great way to get to know our yachts and experience what it’s like to own one. It’s how I got into Oysters and look where it’s taken me! The last year has been tough for yacht charters, but there is light at the end of the tunnel, demand has leapt for both summer charter in the Mediterranean and winter charter in the Caribbean. We have taken on a number of stunning new listings; and if staying closer to home is important to you, we have yachts in unique and unexpected locations. Why not talk to Molly at Oyster Charter and experience the dream yourself?
Getting back on the water
With the new season imminent, it’s time to get your Oyster ready for adventure. If you’re doing it yourself, you’ll find our new season checklist from resident expert Eddie Scougall indispensable. Or get in touch with our Service teams and let them get her ready so you can enjoy uninterrupted sailing throughout the season. They’ll even deliver your yacht to the best location for you to begin your next adventure.
Back to the boat shows
I’ve missed the buzz of the boat shows and the chance to catch up with old friends and new. We are planning to appear at all the usual shows this year if they go ahead – you’ll find details here . Our Private Views last year were incredibly popular, so we intend to continue these in a similar format to provide exclusive access to our new yachts. We’re the premier sponsor for the Safe Harbor race weekend in Newport this August too, which is set to be the perfect weekend for Oyster owners.
Start planning your next adventure
I’m sure, like me and my family, you’ve been planning new adventures over the last few months. Our insider sailing guides (put together by our owners and team) are a great place to look for inspiration. They’re packed with information on routes and stopovers, through to things to do and places to see.
Looking forward
Our Oyster family get-togethers are always a highlight of the year for me and, sadly, our Antigua Regatta in April was another casualty of Covid. But I’m looking forward to this year’s Palma Regatta, 27 th September to 1st October and hope to see you there – it’s a great way to end the summer and share stories of the high times and happy days we’ve all had over the season.
Until then, take care. I hope to see you out on the water soon and thank you once again for being part of the Oyster family.
Fair winds,
Richard. CEO and Owner, Oyster Yachts
