Newport 16 or Renken 18

I'm looking for my first sailboat for my family and I. I have never sailed and have a family of four. I have these two boats that I have narrowed my selection to. I want a boat that is roomy enough for my family, easy to trailer, and yet still have fun on. Anyone have any suggestions or information on either one of these boats?

neptune 16 I had a Neptune 16 for my first sailboat(neptune 16 and newport 16 same boat I believe), Luved the boat, sailed well, and was forgiving of my mistakes for a small sailboat. Not a lot of cabin room but overnited in it a couple of times with wife and kids (wife wasn't happy but kids luved it) Have no knowledge of your other choice. But I know the neptune was very well built...best of luck and happy sails

Renken I was looking for an open 16 footer to introduce my daughters to sailing when I ran across a Renken 18 for sale - it had been donated to a church. It taught me a lot in the 6 years I owned it, and though it was a long way from a state-of-the-art design, it suited my needs at the time. A very safe and stable sailer, its rig is simple and easy to set up - which also means that it doesn't have the tweaks that a more performance oriented boat would have. It was originally built as a "Tangerine 18" in the late 70s, then Renken bought the mold(s) and made them in '83, only to stop production because they cost too much to build. I did about 400 sails on mine and sold it for almost what I had in it, after pushing it as far as I could (rigged it for spinnaker, etc.) Because it has a stub keel it will make a goodly amount of leeway upwind, and thus is not much good for racing, but if you don't mind that drawback it is a fine boat, well built and simple. I would be happy to comment further backchannel. Check out geocities.com/renkensailboats/ for more info.

Newport 16 The Newport has a very large cockpit, easy and fast to rig, very easy and stable to sail. Cabin is too small for family overnight, but great boat for daysailing with lots of storage room in the cabin.

Review of Tangerine 18

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat equipped with a fractional rig. A fractional rig has smaller headsails which make tacking easier, which is an advantage for cruisers and racers, of course. The downside is that having the wind from behind often requires a genaker or a spinnaker for optimal speed.

The Tangerine 18 is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.61 - 0.71 meter (2.00 - 2.30 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Tangerine 18 is 2.37, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 5.2 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Tangerine 18 is about 60 kg/cm, alternatively 336 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 60 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 336 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 21.04

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 9m 2 (96 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

UsageLengthDiameter
Jib sheet 5.3 m(17.5 feet)8 mm(5/16 inch)
Genoa sheet5.3 m(17.5 feet)8 mm(5/16 inch)
Mainsheet 13.3 m(43.7 feet)8 mm(5/16 inch)

Tangerine 18

Tangerine 18 is a 17 ′ 5 ″ / 5.3 m monohull sailboat designed by Brian Amato and built by Salt Marine Inc. starting in 1977.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

First built by Salt Marine of Ft Lauderdale FL (USA). Later offered as the SIGMA 18, before the molds were purchased by Renkin, better known as a builder of powerboats. It then became the RENKIN 18.

Buccaneer 18 vs Mutineer 15

  • Add to quote

Have a chance to purchase either a Buccaneer 18 or Mutineer 15. Both Chrysler boats. Can't decide pros and cons of each. They even share regattas! Which would you choose and why?

The choice depends on how you want to use the boat. For racing, go with the Buc. And hold on!!!! The boat has a well earned rep for being a handful. And it is FAST!!! That said, its smaller sibling is no slouch. The Mutineer is not the handfull that the Buccaneer is. Of course it's not as fast, and it's tamer nature, IMO, makes it a better daysailer. Especially if you are sailing with kids or non sailing Significant Others. You know, where trying to scare the crap out of them isn't the goal. The class association for the Mutineer seems to be more active, better organized, and all around a better resource. If one of the boats has a more active fleet nearby that would weigh heavily if i was going to race the boat.

I have a Mutineer. Easy to single-hand, once set up, I have fit 4 adults in mine (tight squeeze). The Bucc's are 3' longer. There are a few other differences, but basically, they are the same boat, just different sizes. Both share lots of parts.
