Second wave of racers heads to Hawaii in 2023 Transpac yacht race

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - On Thursday morning, the second wave of yachts departed from Los Angeles, Calif., inbound to Hawaii for the 2023 Transpac race.

After they pass the West End of Catalina Island, clearing the first 25 miles of the race, they will traverse through the open Pacific Ocean.

Transpac officials say that navigators will need to strategize against winds in the Pacific High, which are notorious for sending ships adrift if they sail too north. Officials are unsure whether the winds will be strong enough this year to threaten any course records.

Among the second fleet of competitors are two father-son pairs. The sons are the youngest sailors of the competition.

Nicolas Messano, 13, and Oliver Ernest, 15, teamed up with their fathers to crew the Santa Cruz 50 DECEPTION and the J/145 AIMANT DE FILLE, respectively.

Other competitors are using the yacht race as an opportunity to promote environmental issues. Russ Johnson and John Turner, of the 52.2 BLUE MOON, sail in the race to raise awareness of ocean pollution.

“On the return trips, I do research in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch for different organizations, and I have my own non-profit called OPDERA: Ocean Plastic Debris Education Research and Awareness,” Johnson said.

Beginning Saturday, Transpac will announce the fastest boats of the second fleet and will interview navigator’s views on the new forecasts.

The Transpacific Yacht Club is pleased to announce that the entry process is now open for the 2023 edition of the Los Angeles to Honolulu Transpacific Yacht Race.

Known at the Transpac, this will be the 52nd edition of this classic 2025-mile ocean race held biennially since 1906.

The Notice of Race (NOR) detailing the terms and conditions of the event is  now available online here . The race is open to entry for offshore-capable racing and cruising monohull yachts from 30 to 100 feet in length that also meet other criteria listed in the NOR.

Multihull entries must be at least 45 feet in length unless specific stability criteria are met, and there is no restriction on maximum length.

March 1, 2023 is the deadline for payment of the standard entry fees, and after this date up until May 26, 2023 late entry fees will apply.

The Transpac has three start dates to help compress the fleet on the race course and in arrival dates at the finish line at Diamond Head in Honolulu. All starts are 1 mile off Point Fermin in San Pedro, with the first wave leaving on Tuesday, June 27th, the second on Thursday, June 29th and the third on Saturday, July 1, 2023. Any fast multihull entries may start later, depending on their speed. All dates for pre- and post-race activities will be published on the event website.

The pre-start venue for participants will be located at Cabrillo Marina in San Pedro, where a race village is planned for sailors, their family and friends, sponsors and the public as well. At the finish most boats will be in the Ala Wai Harbor in Waikiki at Hawaii Yacht Club, Waikiki Yacht Club or in assigned slips in the marina. Deeper draft boats will be at other locations nearby.

During the race there will be tracking services and regular commentary to explain the features of the course and an analysis of the fleet’s progress during the race. Photo and video uploads along with stories from the teams will also be available on the race’s web and social media channels.

First to enter the 52nd Transpac is Newport Beach-based John Raymont with his Ker 51 Fast Exit II. Raymont’s excitement about this race goes back to his teenage years growing up in Huntington on Long Island, New York when in the 1960’s and ’70’s he followed magazine stories about legendary Transpac yachts like Windward Passage, Ragtime and later Merlin.

“My first overnight race was on an Ericson 39, a seaworthy boat for the typical East Coast sailing of upwind and reaching,” he said. “Later I got to sail longer offshore races like the race to Jamaica I did on La Forza del Destino, a 52-foot Gary Mull design from the early ’70’s. In this race we surged downwind in tradewinds and big waves past Cuba in the Windward Passage, but never got close to planing. So reading the accounts of boats like Passage and Merlin planing their way to Hawaii has always been a huge inspiration for me, I dreamed of doing this great race.”

Raymont raced his first two Transpacs in 2017 and 2019 on this Andrews 40 of the same name, then acquired his current Fast Exit for racing in last year’s 51st edition of the race.

“This boat is like an offshore TP52,” he said, “So we had plenty of high-speed rides in this last race. In fact I learned that even though we had a few times we needed to throttle back during the race our elapsed time was the 25th fastest in Transpac history. We hope to improve on this next year.”

“We’re excited about attracting more entries like John who have been inspired to do this iconic race to fulfill their dreams,” said TPYC Commodore Tom Trujillo. “And like John and many others, we find that doing the race just once is not enough, they keep coming back for more. So we are here to welcome them with the spirit of Aloha.”

Multi-racial team for 52nd Transpac

Published on June 26th, 2023 by Editor -->

The 2023 Transpacific Yacht Race has attracted 58 teams for the 2225nm course from Los Angeles to Honolulu, with the 52nd edition holding staggered starts on June 27, June 29, and July 1. Here’s one of the entrants looking to make waves:

For centuries yacht racing has been an elite activity. Sailing was known as the ‘king of sports and the sport of kings.’ Exclusive.

But now, the Offshore Racing Outreach (ORO) is bringing inclusivity to the yacht racing scene, with a team of sailors from diverse backgrounds set to compete in the biennial Transpac Race.

The team of nine will race an Andrews 56 aptly named Good Trouble, in honor U.S. House of Representatives John Robert Lewis, an American statesman and civil rights activist. And like Lewis, the crew is making waves.

transpac yacht race 2023

Skippering the team is Marie Rogers, a USCG licensed 50-ton captain, certified sailing instructor, recipient of the prestigious Peggy Slater Award and winner of the BoatUS/National Women’s Sailing Association Leadership in Women’s Sailing Award.

As Commodore of Los Angeles Yacht Club in 2019, Rogers was the first black woman to take the helm of a major yacht club in America. She presently is Vice President at US Sailing.

“Sailing is such a wonderful transformative sport – it helps people get in touch with their own abilities, both physically and mentally, and enjoy the ocean environment,” said Rogers. “But unfortunately, coastal watersports seem to have been been reserved for certain types of people.

“For the longest time I’ve said I would love to not be the only black female sailor on a race boat, nor the only black sailing instructor. It’s time for all segments of society to have access to the sailing sport. That is changing now, and through ORO people of color and diverse backgrounds will have opportunities, role models and leaders.”

Rogers revealed that fellow LAYC member Bill McClure was pivotal to the formation of ORO when he observed during a major regatta, “There are no people of color in this race Marie! Let’s fix this!”

It was the genesis of ORO. The 501(c)(3) non-profit was founded, acknowledging, “The experience of offshore sailing creates a potential life-changing opportunity. This program is designed to introduce a more diverse group of individuals to the world of yacht racing.”

“I worked for years in summer programs for gifted minorities, teaching and directing programs that have sent several thousand underprivileged yet qualified students to universities and colleges.” explained McClure, a USC Professor Emeritus.

“It’s obvious minorities are lacking in the sport of sailing. So, although we are only addressing a small number of individuals at this time, I’m hoping this will be the spark that will fire change on a national stage.”

ORO acquired the sailboat which was christened Good Trouble: a veteran of several successful long-distance race campaigns to Hawaii and Mexico. Built in 1991 at Dencho Marine (Long Beach, CA), her return from San Francisco Bay to Southern California heralds a new opportunity for sailors.

Rogers describes the Transpac team as a rainbow coalition. “We have talented sailors of African American, Native American, Asian and Southeast Asian, and Caucasian descent.” In addition to Rogers, team members are: Greg Carter, Yosh Han, Paul Martson, Sandy Poole, Ariana Rassouli, James Stewart, Rhonda Wagner, and Colin Willson.

ORO partnered with J/World Sailing School, which has a long and successful history in turn key offshore sailing events including Transpac. J/World facilitated the ORO campaign with guidance and logistics, and two J/World coaches will sail aboard Good Trouble as navigator and watch captain.

The self-supported bike race across Europe

The Transcontinental Race (TCR) was founded in 2013 by the late Mike Hall, a giant of the ultra distance cycling scene. It is a single stage race across Europe where cyclists cover around 4000 km.

Self-supported

The foundational principle of all of our races. Find out what self reliance means to us and why it's such a powerful idea.

transpac yacht race 2023

The Control Points

Roubaix, france.

The 10th edition of the Transcontinental Race will start in Roubaix. Starting with a lap of the iconic velodrome, home to the fabled stories of Merckx, Moser, De Vlaeminck and Deignan, riders will head out across the pavé that is synonymous with the border between France and Belgium, before tackling the successive cobbled climbs of the Start Parcours.

With over a century of cycling folklore baked into the culture of the area, our riders will start to write their own stories of adventure, with the shores of the Bosphorus still a continent away.

transpac yacht race 2023

Vršič Pass, Slovenia

Heading southeast across the Alps, riders will arrive at CP1 in Slovenia, tackling the ferocious Mangartsko Sedlo. Built by Italian soldiers in 1938, the road takes in almost 1500 m of climbing in just over 10 km, with pitches of 17%. Riders will face the first significant challenge of the Race as they turn the pedals with tired legs to push to the top of the climb, which sits at over 2000 m of altitude. Passing through five tunnels hewn from the rough rock of the mountainside, riders will enjoy uninterrupted views of the Julian Alps at the summit.

transpac yacht race 2023

Bjelašnica, Bosnia

Situated southwest of Sarajevo, Bjelašnica — the highest peak in Bosnia, and host to the 1984 Winter Olympics — is the next destination that awaits our riders. While riders of TCRNo6 climbed up to the abandoned ski station that sits atop the mountain, riders of TCRNo10 will take on different tracks.

This will mark the first off-road section of the 10th edition of the Race, where riders’ kit choices will start to pay dividends if they have managed to correctly judge the balance of risk and reward. After conquering the rough gravel that characterises the unpaved roads of the region, riders will descend through the beautiful valley towards Odžaci along narrow passes that hug the mountainside and through dense farmland alive with the sounds of livestock.

transpac yacht race 2023

Prevallë, Kosovo

In its 10th edition, the Transcontinental Race will visit Kosovo for the first time, with Prevallë playing host to CP3. A popular skiing destination, the town lies near the border of North Macedonia in the Šar Mountains National Park, an area with 30 peaks higher than 2500 m of altitude.

Bordering the Kosovo Plain to the northeast and the Metohija Valley in the northwest, the region will see riders enter unfamiliar terrain and experience a true taste of Balkan wilderness along the way. Home to the Balkan lynx, as well as wolves, bears and wild boar, this relatively untouched corner of the region will pose its own set of challenges. While the Race won’t be won here, it could certainly be lost.

transpac yacht race 2023

Çanakkale, Türkiye

The penultimate Control Point of TCRNo10 will be in Çanakkale, last used in the Race in 2016 during TCRNo4. Famous for the two castles on either side of the mouth of the Dardanelles Strait, the town was established as a key trade location in the 8th century by the Greeks, and its status as a key trading location was cemented during the Ottoman empire.

Riders will head south from here to the sparsely inhabited rural outskirts of the city. Characterised by rolling hills, dense forests, and agriculture, riders will have a taste of rural Türkiye in all its glory as they begin their journey towards the Finish line in Istanbul.

transpac yacht race 2023

Istanbul, Türkiye

The tenth edition of the Transcontinental Race will finish at the warm shores of the Bosphorus in Istanbul. Bridging continental and cultural divides, the city has long been understood as the point where East meets West. This will be the case too for our riders, who, after over 3700km from France to Türkiye will travel along the Black Sea coastline before dropping down into Istanbul to complete their journey.

With the possibility of physical replenishment with a trip to the hammam, and a chance to deepen the spiritual connection to their journey with a trip to the Blue Mosque, our riders will once again become whole after breaking their journey, and sometimes their mind, body and spirit, into parts for the previous 15 days.
