What does peak emissions mean for China — and the world?

The world might be witnessing the bending of a key climate curve. Various projections have suggested that carbon emissions from China, the world's largest emitter, will probably peak soon — if they haven’t already — well ahead of Beijing’s pledge that they would peak before 2030 .

“What happens with China’s emissions in the next year and next decade is absolutely decisive for the success of the global climate effort,” says Lauri Myllyvirta, an analyst who has tracked China’s emissions trends for more than a decade and is a fellow at the Asia Society Policy Institute, a think-tank based in Washington DC.

“Once China’s emissions peak, it’s likely that global emissions will also reach their peak,” says Dave Jones, an electricity analyst at Ember, a London-based think-tank.

But some researchers say that current peak predictions have big uncertainties owing to various factors, such as the future path of China’s economy. And although reaching the peak will be a major climate milestone, China's emissions must continue to fall to net zero , which could be challenging, say some researchers.

China reports its greenhouse-gas emissions to the United Nations through a national communication on climate change every four years and a separate report every two years. But those statistics have a major lag, and China’s latest ones were for 2018.

Assessments by Myllyvirta suggest that China’s emissions have been declining since March. This points to a possible 2023 peak, he says, but only if China’s clean-energy production can stick to last year’s record-breaking growth rate in 2024 and its energy consumption drops to its pre-pandemic level. China installed a staggering 217 gigawatts of solar-power capacity in 2023 alone. The United States has installed 137 gigawatts in its entire history.

Myllyvirta calculates China’s monthly CO 2 emissions by analyzing energy, industrial and customs data from the Chinese government, industry bodies and commercial companies. Analysts can also estimate how much China’s emissions have changed every year by analyzing data released by China annually, he said. He thinks the current downward trend is largely because of the growth of clean energy.

Peak still to come

Modelling by Ryna Cui, a researcher who specializes in coal transition at the University of Maryland in College Park, and her team predicts emissions will peak before 2025. Cui’s team found that rapid deployment of green technologies and shrinking demand for emissions-intensive products, such as steel and cement, are pushing emissions down. But she cautions: “Emissions peaking can be a complex process, with possible small fluctuations, instead of one single point.”

Short-term fluctuations have happened before. China’s emissions declined between 2013 and 2016 after coal use had dropped under a government campaign to tackle air pollution. But a rebound occurred after fossil-fuel consumption went up again.

Other analysts think that it will take another year or so to confidently assess whether China’s recent emissions decline is temporary or the beginning of a long-term trend. “There are very, very big uncertainties,” says Bill Hare, a climate scientist and chief executive of Climate Analytics, headquartered in Berlin. Normally, researchers would need five years of emissions data to make a call on a trend, he explains.

Life after peak

Peak emissions are just the beginning. China must also double down on its efforts to reduce emissions to net-zero to prevent global warming from getting worse, says Gunnar Luderer, an energy researcher at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany. China has pledged to reach this before 2060 .

Hare and his colleagues are assessing China’s technology and policy trends to project its emissions trajectory. They forecast two scenarios, one showing emissions staying flat for a few years, whereas in the other, emissions begin to decline. The unknowns include whether China will put many of the coal-power plants it is currently building into operation and how fast it will deploy renewable-energy plants over the next few years.

China approved 83% less coal-power capacity in the first half of 2024 than in the year before, owing to massive renewable advancements, according to a report released in August by the Helsinki-based think-tank Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air and Global Energy Monitor, a non-governmental organization based in Covina, California. This spells a possible end to China’s coal-power capacity expansion in the next few years, once the projects that are under construction and waiting to be built are complete, Cui says.

Although to slash emissions, China will have to wean itself off coal entirely, and Myllyvirta foresees there will be “a lot of opposition from vested interests” in the coal industry, such as state-owned enterprises and local governments.

Time pressure

China will have a much shorter time frame to achieve net zero, compared with the European Union and the United States, whose emissions peaked around 1979 and 2005, respectively.

Nevertheless, Sun Yongping, a climate economist at Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, China, is confident about China’s ability to reduce emissions after they peak . “Decarbonization requires two things: technologies and manufacturing capacity to bring these technologies into reality. China has both,” Sun says.

For others, China’s peaking will have a more profound significance. “The current global emission growth is largely driven by developing countries’ economic expansion,” says Mi Zhifu, a researcher in climate change economics at the University College London. “China’s experience in decarbonization could offer valuable lessons for other developing nations striving to decouple economic growth from their emissions.”

Why is the US cutting interest rates? What does it mean for Australia?

Topic: Money and Monetary Policy

Composite image of RBA governor Michele Bullock and US Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell.

The US Federal Reserve has cut interest rates overnight in an important move for the global economy.

As lots of traders expected, the Fed cut interest rates by half a percentage point, saying it was confident inflation would continue to recede.

What will it mean for Australia?

Does it mean the Reserve Bank will have to cut rates too? What will it do to the value of Australia's dollar?

Why is the US cutting rates?

The US decision to cut rates means it is joining the European Union, the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, Denmark, Switzerland, China, and many other countries in doing so.

The Fed has had its policy rate in the target range of 5.25 to 5.5 per cent for over a year, so its cut pushes the range down to 4.75 to 5 per cent.

See the image below, from the Federal Reserve's website , to get a sense of what it will look like.

US federal funds target range

The Fed began lifting rates at the start of 2022, in response to inflation rising quickly in 2021.

US inflation peaked at 9.1 per cent in June 2022, and it has since fallen back to 2.5 per cent.

The Fed's target for inflation is 2 per cent.

The US unemployment rate has also been rising this year. It was 3.7 per cent in January, but last month it was 4.2 per cent.

Economists predicted the Fed would want to start cutting rates before inflation hits 2 per cent because there's a long lag time between interest rate movements and their effect on the economy.

If the Fed left it too late to cut rates, it may have ended up causing too much damage to the US economy by pushing it into recession.

Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell made it pretty clear last month that US rate cuts were on the horizon.

"The time has come for policy to adjust," Mr Powell said.

What will it mean for Australia's economy?

The cut will have implications for Australia's economy.

It means the Reserve Bank's cash rate target, which sits at 4.35 per cent, will be relatively stronger compared to US interest rates.

Keeping other things equal, that could see the value of the Australian dollar rise compared to the US dollar.

It would also have implications for investment and trade, and for Australians looking to travel overseas.

However, a lot will depend on how US Fed officials communicate their reasons for cutting rates.

"A 0.5 percentage point cut that scares markets about US economic prospects could increase the [value of the] US dollar because it is a safe haven currency," said Carol Kong, a Commonwealth Bank currency strategist.

"However, a 0.5 percentage point cut that eases concerns about US economic prospects could undermine the US dollar."

The graph below, from Reuters, shows how Australia's dollar has performed against the US dollar in recent years.

On Wednesday afternoon it was worth US67.59 cents, having just touched a two-week high as currency traders wagered that the Fed would be cutting rates.

Australian-US dollar graph September 18 2024

What will it mean for the Reserve Bank?

Australia has lagged the US with its interest rate movements in this rate cycle.

The RBA didn't start lifting interest rates from their emergency lows until May 2022, which was a couple of months after the US Fed began lifting rates.

The RBA also didn't lift interest rates as high as the US Fed — it only lifted the cash rate to 4.35 per cent, whereas the US Fed lifted rates to an upper range of 5.5 per cent.

In recent months, RBA governor Michele Bullock has acknowledged that Australia is lagging the US in the cycle and has repeatedly said it's unlikely the RBA will cut rates this year.

"At the moment, interest rates in the United States are higher than us. We've been criticised for that, in fact," she said in August .

"We've been criticised by some people saying our interest rates should be … near where the United States ones are.

"But we've chosen ... very deliberately to try and bring inflation down while not turning the economy into a recession and spiking unemployment. That's been our strategy," she said.

In the June quarter, underlying inflation in Australia was 3.9 per cent, down from a peak of 6.8 per cent in the December quarter of 2022.

Australia's unemployment rate has risen from 3.9 per cent in December last year to 4.2 per cent in July. The Bureau of Statistics will release the August unemployment rate on Thursday morning.

Last month, Ms Bullock said when US rates were eventually cut it would help to bring Australia's exchange rate back into play in our fight against inflation.

"At the moment, with US interest rates higher than ours, that's probably keeping our dollar a little bit lower," she said in August .

"But if the interest rates in the US start to decline, which people are expecting, that will probably give a bit more support to our exchange rate.

"At the moment, everyone had increased their interest rates coming out of the pandemic so we didn't really get much action from the exchange rate. But over the next while, as different countries go different ways, it is going to come back into play."

What does a Fed rate cut mean for American households?

The fed’s aggressive rate hike were initially expected to cause an economic slowdown resulting in job losses..

what does yachtswoman mean

Wire Service

12:47 PM on Sep 18, 2024 CDT

A cashier counts out money in New York on Nov. 28, 2013.

The Federal Reserve cut U.S. short-term borrowing costs on Wednesday, a watershed moment that should start to ease some of the financial pressures everyday consumers have felt over the two and a half years that the central bank has battled with high inflation.

The Fed, after 5.25 percentage points of increases between March 2022 and July 2023, decided on a half-point reduction to 4.75%-5.00% to address rising worries about the cooling labor market.

The central bank is widely expected to keep lowering rates to around 4.5% or even 4% by the end of the year, with more cuts in 2025.

Fed policymakers have said they don’t see the policy rate returning to the sub-2% levels that prevailed for more than a decade before 2022. That era’s low mortgage rates, often under 4%, aren’t coming back any time soon.

Still, a lower policy rate should translate to cheaper borrowing costs for most kinds of loans while, on average, paychecks are now rising faster than prices as inflation has cooled substantially. Even so, each trip to the grocery store is a reminder that today’s dollars don’t go as far they did just a few years ago.

So how will rate cuts affect ordinary Americans?

Softening the landing

The Fed’s aggressive rate hikes, begun only after inflation had surged, were initially expected to cause an economic slowdown resulting in job losses.

Instead, the economy so far has averted recession, even as inflation by the Consumer Price Index dropped to 2.5% from a mid-2022 peak over 9%. Employers kept hiring, and the unemployment rate, even with its recent rise to 4.2%, is still low by historical standards.

In cutting rates, the Fed is trying to keep it like that. Already, hiring and wage growth have slowed, the number of job openings per worker has dropped, job search times are lengthening, and the number of workers settling for part-time work when they prefer full-time employment has risen.

Lower interest rates are aimed at easing those trends by making it less expensive for businesses and households to borrow and therefore spend more freely.

Whether the Fed can calibrate its rate cuts so as to achieve what economists call a soft landing - the policy coup of guiding an economy through a period of tight monetary policy to stifle inflation without jarring the labor market - will be one of the most important ways its actions will affect regular Americans.

“The challenge is that soft landings are rare and as much about luck as skill,” says KPMG’s Diane Swonk, who expects the Fed policy rate to be at 4.25%-4.50% by year end. “We have never achieved one in the wake of an actual bout of inflation.”

Cost of credit

Borrowing costs – rates on home loans, credit cards, auto loans and student loans - rose sharply as the Fed increased its policy rate.

Some of those rates, notably mortgages, have fallen quite a bit as the Fed has telegraphed its intentions for rate cuts: The average 30-year fixed rate mortgage recently fell to 6.20%, according to Freddie Mac, from a high of nearly 8% last October.

This week’s rate cut, in other words, “has already been baked in,” says Marcia Kaufman, CEO of Bayport Funding. Mortgage rates could fall more if the Fed signals deeper cuts than currently anticipated.

Other rates, for personal loans, credit cards and auto loans, are typically more closely tied to actual changes in the Fed’s policy rate and should drop soon after the Fed acts, says Parthenon’s Gregory Daco.

But the Fed isn’t expected to slash its policy rate, so those rates - currently above 8% for five-year bank car loans, and more than 21% for bank credit cards, Fed data shows - likely won’t move dramatically either.

As for student loans, if the loan is from the federal government it won’t move at all. Rates on loans from private lenders will.

Savings and investments

As the Fed raised its benchmark rate, banks raised rates on high-yield savings accounts and certificates of deposits, with some banks crowing to savers about each increase.

As the Fed has signaled rate cuts, those same banks have quietly lowered their rates as well, and likely will drop them further once the Fed actually moves. For savers, that will be a negative.

The stock market’s reaction to the Fed’s rate cut is less predictable, because in the short-run it will hinge on whether the Fed’s move is seen as locking in a soft landing, or a sign that the central bank is behind the curve and could crash the economy.

Related: A gap in the dream: D-FW’s homebuilding spree isn’t enough for millions of new residents

Over the longer run , lower interest rates tend to push up the stock market as a whole as investors are enticed to take on more risk when yields on safe assets like government bonds fall.

About 58% of American households in 2022 had money in the stock market, according to Fed research. Nearly all families among the top 10% of earners owned stocks, compared to 34% of families with earnings in the bottom half.

Housing affordabilty

While mortgage rates have dropped in anticipation of the Fed’s rate cuts, housing affordability remains at levels comparable to what was seen during the housing bubble that preceded the 2007-2009 financial crisis, national data from the Atlanta Fed shows.

A Fed interest rate cut will do little to change that in the short-term, Fed policymakers have said. Eventually, lower borrowing costs should filter through to the housing market, encouraging builders to add supply and homeowners who locked in low mortgage rates years ago to consider selling.

“The dynamic between interest rates and home prices is very different in this business cycle post pandemic and the reason is we lack housing supply, both single and multi-family,” says Nationwide’s Kathy Bostjancic. “But one way you get increased supply in the market is having mortgage rates going down...in some areas you may actually see a little bit of a decrease in home prices because of increased availability.”

What the Fed Rate Cut Will Mean for Five Areas of Your Financial Life

Here’s what the half-point interest rate cut will mean for your car loans, credit cards, mortgages, savings and student loans.

 • Share full article

An illustration of a man in a Vitruvian position, holding a house, a car, a dollar bill and a credit card.

By Ron Lieber and Tara Siegel Bernard

 • Published Sept. 17, 2024 Updated Sept. 18, 2024, 3:22 p.m. ET

The moment consumers have been waiting for is finally here: The Federal Reserve cut its key interest rate by half a percentage point Wednesday.

The rate now stands at about 4.9 percent, and some economists think it could fall another half a percentage point before the end of the year. This number doesn’t translate directly into what you’ll pay if you’re a borrower. If only credit card companies charged so little.

Still, this move should eventually bring interest rates down for many borrowers, even as it is likely to lower the rates that financial institutions pay out to savers.

Here’s what to watch for in five key areas of your financial life, as rates fall now — and hopefully (for borrowers at least) even more in the coming months.

What’s happening now: Auto rates and car prices have been trending lower but they still remain elevated, making affordability a challenge. But dealerships are offering more incentives and discounts to attract buyers, and that’s expected to continue.

Car loans tend to track with the yield on the five-year Treasury note, which is influenced by the Fed’s key rate. But other factors determine how much borrowers actually pay, including: your credit history, the type of vehicle, the loan term and the down payment. Lenders also take into consideration the levels of delinquent auto loans . As those move higher , so do rates, which makes qualifying for a loan more difficult, particularly for those with lower credit scores.

“As delinquencies drop not only would auto loans rate come down, but more people would have access to credit,” said Erin Keating, executive analyst at Cox Automotive.

The average rate on new car loans was 7.1 percent in August, according to Edmunds , a car shopping website, down slightly from 7.4 percent in the same month in 2023 and up from 5.7 percent in 2022. Rates for used cars were higher: The average loan carried an 11.3 percent rate in August, marginally higher than 11.2 percent last August and 9 percent in August 2022.

Where and how to shop: Once you establish your budget, get preapproved for a car loan through a credit union or bank (Capital One and Ally are two of the largest auto lenders) so you have a point of reference to compare financing available through the dealership, if you decide to go that route. Always negotiate on the price of the car (including all fees), not the monthly payments, which can obscure the loan terms and what you’ll be paying in total over the life of the loan.

Credit Cards

What’s happening now: The interest rates you pay on any balances that you carry should fall after the Fed has acted, though it may not be instant and it will vary by card issuer. As of May, the average interest rate when banks were assessing interest on balances was 22.76 percent, according to Federal Reserve data .

Much depends, however, on your credit score and the type of card. Rewards cards, for instance, often charge higher-than-average interest rates.

Where and how to shop: Earlier this year, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau sent up a flare to let people know that the 25 biggest credit-card issuers had rates that were 8 to 10 percentage points higher than smaller banks or credit unions. For the average cardholder, that can add up to $400 to $500 more in interest each year.

Consider seeking out a smaller bank or credit union that might offer you a better deal. Many credit unions require you to work or live someplace particular to qualify for membership, but some bigger credit unions may have looser rules .

Before you make a move, call your current card issuer and ask them to match the best interest rate you’ve found in the marketplace that you’ve already qualified for. And if you do transfer your balance , keep a close eye on fees, whether your initial interest rate expires and if so, what it might jump to.

What’s happening now: Mortgage rates have fallen to their lowest level since February 2023, but more palatable rates aren’t going to solve the affordability problem. Housing prices remain high, in large part because there simply aren’t enough homes to meet demand.

Rates on 30-year fixed-rate mortgages don’t move in tandem with the Fed’s benchmark, but instead generally track with the yield on 10-year Treasury bonds, which are influenced by a variety of factors, including expectations about inflation, the Fed’s actions and how investors react.

The average rate on 30-year fixed-rate mortgages was 6.2 percent as of Thursday, down from 6.35 percent the previous week and 7.18 percent this time last year. Rates are also more than a percentage point lower than their most recent peak of 7.22 percent in early May.

Other home loans are more closely tethered to the central bank’s decisions. Home-equity lines of credit and adjustable-rate mortgages — which carry variable interest rates — generally rise within two billing cycles after a change in the Fed’s rates.

Where and how to shop : Prospective home buyers would be wise to get several mortgage rate quotes — on the same day, since rates fluctuate — from a selection of mortgage brokers, banks and credit unions.

That should include: the rate you’ll pay; any discount points , which are optional fees buyers can pay to “buy down” their interest rate; and other items like lender-related fees. Look to the “ annual percentage rate ,” which usually includes these items, to get an apples-to-apples comparison of your total costs across different loans. Just be sure to ask what’s included in the A.P.R.

Savings Accounts and C.D.s

What’s happening now: The rate reversal is likely to be most disappointing for savers, who have benefited from juicier yields on everything from online savings accounts and certificates of deposit to money market funds . Those are all likely to inch lower, in line with the Fed’s move, but some providers may move faster than others. That usually depends on whether the bank wants to attract new customers by dangling yields that are more attractive than their competitors’ offerings.

But you can safely assume that online high-yield savings account will still offer more competitive rates than traditional commercial banks, whose yields have remained anemic throughout this period of higher interest rates (averaging 0.45 percent as of September, according to DepositAccounts.com, part of the online loan marketplace LendingTree).

Where and how to shop: Rates are one consideration, but you’ll also want to look at providers’ history , minimum deposit requirements and any fees (high-yield savings accounts don’t usually charge fees, but other products, like money market funds, do). DepositAccounts.com, which tracks rates across thousands of institutions, is a good place to start comparing providers.

If you’re considering certificates of deposit, now is probably the time to lock in a decent rate if you haven’t already. Online C.D.s with a one-year term averaged 4.97 percent in August, according to DepositAccounts.com. Online savings accounts averaged 4.40 percent in August, down from 5.1 percent the same month last year.

Check out our colleague Jeff Sommer’s recent columns for more insight into money-market funds. The yield on the Crane 100 Money Fund Index , which tracks the largest money-market funds , was 5.06 percent as of Monday, down from 5.13 percent on July 29.

Student Loans

What’s happening now: There are two main types of student loans. Most people turn to federal loans first. Their interest rates are fixed for the life of the loan, they’re far easier for teenagers to get and their repayment terms are more generous.

Current rates are 6.53 percent for undergraduates, 8.03 percent for unsubsidized graduate student loans and 9.08 percent for the PLUS loans that both parents and graduate students use. Rates reset on July 1 each year and follow a formula based on the 10-year Treasury bond auction in May.

Private student loans are a bit of a wild card. Undergraduates often need a co-signer, rates can be fixed or variable and much depends on your credit score.

Where and how to shop: Many banks and credit unions want nothing to do with student loans, so you’ll want to shop around extensively, including with lenders that specialize in private student loans.

You’ll often see online ads and websites offering interest rates from each lender that can range by 15 percentage points or so. As a result, you’ll need to give up a fair bit of information before getting an actual price quote.

What Does It Mean for a Book to Be Banned?

Banned Books Week 2024: Banned, but why?

September 18, 2024

You might hear the term "banned book" used a lot, but what does it actually mean? By simple definition, to ban something means “to prohibit, especially by legal means,” or “to prohibit the use, performance, or distribution of.” The American Library Association builds upon this saying, “A book is banned when it is entirely removed from a collection in response to a formal or informal challenge […] a challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict access to materials or services based on the objections of a person or group.”

However, many of the books that have been banned at certain times or locations throughout U.S. history are still available to the general public in some capacity. You may have seen a banned title at a bookstore. Or perhaps you learned the books you read in your childhood had been banned at some point. You could even be reading a “banned” book you got from the library right now! So, what does it ultimately mean to “ban” a book? And clearly a book ban doesn’t work, right? The answer is—it’s complicated.

Book bans and challenges tend to affect libraries, both school and public, the most, which is why the American Library Association has been promoting “Banned Books Week” since 1982 to raise awareness and advocate for the Freedom to Read. The majority of library institutions have a formal review process when it comes to book challenges (a person or group asking for the removal of an item), and sometimes, these reviews do end in a book being removed from the shelves or access being restricted.

The role of the library in the community is to provide access to its greatest commodity: materials and resources. The role of community members is to decide for themselves what information they seek. When a book is banned or challenged, the right to that information gets taken away from all community members, including those who might need the information the most. And when access to information is denied somewhere, it sets a precedent that can imperil access to information everywhere.

At Mid-Continent Public Library, we are proud to offer a broad and diverse collection of materials and resources that reflects the vast and diverse community we serve. Individuals and families are encouraged to make their own decisions on which materials best fit their needs. We stand firmly in support of the Freedom to Read and believe it is essential to achieving our mission of enriching our communities through expanding access to innovation, information, ideas, and inspiration.

For Banned Books Week 2024 , Mid-Continent Public Library is showcasing previously banned books, with each branch featuring a title you might be surprised to find on a list of censored works.

Ahead of Saturday's huge bout at Wembley, Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois come face-to-face for the first time during fight week.

“I could say a lot, but I won’t...” What happened when Anthony Joshua sparred Daniel Dubois?

Joshua and Dubois will fight in earnest on Saturday, in front of more than 90,000 people at Wembley stadium, live on Sky Sports Box Office .

But the Riyadh Season: Joshua vs Dubois event won't be the first time they have traded punches.

AJ Dubois

The pair sparred when Dubois was a teenager breaking onto the GB squad and Joshua, an Olympic champion and top pro, was training at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.

Rumours would begin to emanate from the gym, especially when Dubois was readying to make his professional debut, that something had happened when he sparred Joshua. That Dubois managed to rock or even floor Joshua.

Joe Joyce and Frazer Clarke, when they were GB super-heavyweights, were two of Joshua's most regular sparring partners around that time.

Neither though would answer whether Dubois had enjoyed that kind of success against AJ.

Daniel Dubois’ trainer Don Charles sits down with Sky Sports’ Andy Scott to discuss the upcoming heavyweight world title fight against Anthony Joshua on September 21st 2024.

"I'm not going to divulge that. You've got to wait and see. I don't like when people start doing that. That's practice and that should be private. A code of honour, it's breaking that," Joyce told Sky Sports .

"Sparring is sparring. A fight is a fight. That was a long time ago. They've both come on a lot since then. They've had their different paths and journeys, upsets, that sort of thing."

Frazer said: "I could say a lot, but I won't. Always competitive spars. AJ was always that little bit ahead, but I feel Daniel's closed the gap."

An incident could have happened in sparring. Romford heavyweight Johnny Fisher knows how effective Dubois can be in the gym first hand. "I can imagine there were some firefights there because we know how powerful Joshua is and Dubois certainly brings the heat," he told Sky Sports .

"I've heard the rumours like everyone else. But sparring is sparring. I know it's a cliché, it's been said a thousand times but sometimes you're going into a spar and your coach is telling you to work on these certain things or you might have trained really hard the day before or you're fresher. Sparring can be read into too much."

WBA No 1 contender Martin Bakole, who has sparred both Joshua and Dubois, agreed. "In sparring anything can happen," he said. "When you got to spar Tyson Fury or Joshua, it's not only you, it's maybe two or three people [in the session] so they're sparring different guys.

"If he was in with someone maybe like me, and I give him a hard time and you come in still fresh, you can land a beautiful punch. It can happen to everyone."

Anthony Joshua

But Bakole still gave a scathing assessment of Dubois ahead of his fight with Joshua.

"He doesn't have the heart, that's a big problem," Bakole said of Dubois. "He's big, strong and comes to fight, but doesn't have the heart. As soon as you move a lot, touch him a lot, he will give up. If you saw Dubois go back on the back foot, just understand he's out."

Ahead of Saturday's fight even Dubois has not been looking to provide further stories for the rumour mill.

Dubois said: "I don't want to talk about no sparring or none of that. It happened seven years ago, and to be honest, I can't remember that."

We know that he at least landed a meaningful punch. Joshua himself said: "He just cracked me with a good shot. But I stood on my feet.

"I don't know where this whole narrative that someone turned my lights off came from.

"People say what they say. And with me, there's always been an inch that makes a mile, but it's all good."

Isolating one incident is less instructive than considering what their sparring as a whole means for their upcoming fight. The signs all promise excitement.

Daniel Dubois

"I've seen them spar many times in Sheffield," London super-lightweight Ohara Davies told Sky Sports . "Daniel knows AJ from what he's experienced against him sparring and their spars were always even.

"I never saw AJ get knocked down or get hurt and I never saw Daniel Dubois get knocked down or hurt either.

"Maybe [AJ] did, but not when I was there. I never saw anything like that. And even when I was there I didn't hear anything like that."

But he added: "Especially with no headguards and they've got smaller gloves, we're in for a good fight."

Paul Walmsley, a former GB coach who was present for much of their sparring, thinks it does indicate how the fight itself will play out.

"What I recall is that Joshua got the better of it," Walmsley said. "He was on the squad longer, he was more mobile, kept Daniel at long range. All the spars seemed to have a similar pattern. Daniel was a bit flat-footed. He seems to be moving a lot more now I've noticed but then he was bit more flat-footed. Joshua could get in and out, get around him pretty easily there."

Anthony Joshua fights Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium live on Sky Sports Box Office on September 21

Josh Kelly, who will fight Ishmael Davis on the Wembley Stadium undercard, was a GB boxer at the time and he always enjoyed watching the two spar.

"I think Joshua's got the height and length advantage. That straight one-two and the left hook-back hand is fast and hard," he told Sky Sports .

"If Daniel's got a bit more head movement he could get work past him but I don't know if he does.

"If Dubois can close distance get off the line and land the right hand, start trying to break him down with the jab, it could change things up.

"The power on these blokes is just different. "These guys are just built different. So anyone can get knocked out in sparring.

"I'm sat there with my popcorn thinking one of these guys is going to go soon."

Hearn on AJ v Dubois

Not that he actually witnessed that. "There were [rumours] but I never saw it," he said. "Sparring's sparring. Anyone can be dropped when you're a heavyweight. They all punch like absolute monsters."

He is though expecting to see a knockout on Saturday. "It can't go the distance," he said simply.

"That can't go the distance."
